It might not be the first place you’d think of for domestic travel; however, it seems like its popularity is on a very strong upward curve.

An impressive 77.8 million passengers used Denver International Airport in 2023, which is not only a new all-time record but also a 12.1% increase in 2022.

Stats like this show just how popular Denver is as a destination – so why should you consider visiting the ‘Mile-High City’ this Spring?

It’s Shoulder Season

Denver’s two main shoulder seasons are in the fall and in the spring.

Between March and May, you will find the city has more comfortable temperatures compared to the extremes of summer and winter, and it should also be less crowded.

This can lead to cheaper hotels and other accommodations in the city – you can fairly easily find a hotel in the $125 to $150 per night price bracket during the spring, possibly even cheaper if you stay a little outside the center.

A brief check-in with Skyscanner shows that you can get flights to Denver for an average price of about $50 one-way in the spring from American locations such as Atlanta, Kansas City, Dallas, Portland, Detroit, Los Angeles, Memphis, Miami, and more.

It might not always get the recognition it deserves on this count, but Denver is a great city for food lovers.

And between 1-10 March, the city will run its annual Denver Restaurant Week event with four specific price points to choose from: $25, $35, $45, or $55.

This means you can enjoy a multi-course meal at one of over 200 participating restaurants for a set price – it’s a great way to fully explore the food scene here.

Spring break is just around the corner, and these are the most popular destinations that American travelers are headed to this season.

According to recent data from the travel booking platform Hopper, these are the most-booked destinations in the U.S. this spring.

Unsurprisingly, several of the top destinations this spring are located in the Sunshine State. Florida has always been a hotspot for spring breakers.

Some of the other trending destinations are located out West and in the South.

Here are the most popular U.S. destinations for this spring:

1. Orlando, Florida

Orlando is a great destination to visit during the spring. The most popular attractions in Orlando are the theme parks, namely Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando.

As someone who has been to Orlando’s theme parks dozens of times, I have to say that spring can be an extremely crowded time to visit, especially around the Easter holidays. My favorite time to visit Disney and Universal is in May when the spring break crowds have died down.

Of course, there’s plenty to do in Orlando aside from theme parks. The Central Florida city is becoming known as a trendy destination for dining, culture, and nightlife.

2. Las Vegas, Nevada

The second most popular destination in the U.S. this spring is Las Vegas. Nicknamed Sin City, Las Vegas definitely lives up to its reputation if you are looking for a crazy spring break trip.

This city is famous for its wild nightlife and casinos where you can try your luck all night long. But there’s another side to Las Vegas if that’s not your style.

Las Vegas can also be a family-friendly destination with lots of entertainment and shows for all ages. There’s the underrated Arts District to explore and breathtaking nature like the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, just a short drive away.

3. Miami Beach, Florida

Miami Beach is the quintessential spring break destination. This beachfront city is actually separate from Miami — but it’s just a short drive away from Miami and connected by several bridges.

If you’re looking for a beach trip, you can’t go wrong with Miami Beach this spring. The main strip is lined with high-rise hotels and condos, and the beach itself has white sand and clear turquoise-blue water.

There are tons of opportunities for dining and nightlife, and you can easily get to Miami for a dose of arts and culture in the Wynwood Art District or Little Havana.

The full list features a few of the usual suspects in North America but also a surprise destination or two from Europe and Asia.

7. Barcelona, Spain

Nestled in the most visited region in all of Spain, Barcelona is a city with few equals around Europe.

Spring is one of the best times to visit Barcelona as the costs will be lower, and you’ll also avoid the infamous overcrowding that has been blighting the city in recent summers.

March also plays host to the Barcelona Beer Festival (22-24) and the Sant Medir Festival (3 March) where floats will parade along the streets and free candy is handed out.

6. Rome, Italy

Rome is a beautiful and fascinating city that requires a lot of walking if you want to see everything.

This is why spring is a great time to visit, with average temperatures usually sitting around 55F in March and April, so you won’t melt while trying to take it all in.

Compared to a summer average of 80F, it is much more pleasant to see outdoor attractions such as the Roman Forum and Colosseum.

5. Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

Ever popular with American travelers, Punta Cana is an ideal spring hideout.

With warm and sunny Caribbean weather, stunningly clean and beautiful beaches, and a host of excellent all-inclusive hotels, it’s easy to see why.

Each year it seems there are more reasons to consider visiting Punta Cana, such as a planned new train route linking it with Santo Domingo, and several new resorts scheduled to be opened over the coming months.

Just because Mexico’s tourism peaks around New Year’s, it doesn’t mean that travelers aren’t longing for the country’s dreamy beaches even now that temperatures have started to rise.

In fact, recent reports show that Riviera Maya, one of the most sought-after regions in the entire country, is currently experiencing an unprecedented influx of visitors, with hotel occupancy rates nearing the 100% mark.

As we speak, 85% of rooms available throughout Riviera Maya are booked for these upcoming months, and the number is just bound to get higher as time goes on.

These stats lead us to believe that, slowly but surely, the gorgeous region that stretches from Puerto Morelos to Punta Allen is catching up with its northern neighbor, Cancun.

Here’s why:

It’s Never Been Easier To Visit Riviera Maya

For the busy modern traveler, convenience is of the essence, and there’s nothing more off-putting than having to hop from one plane to another just to get to your destination of choice, wasting a lot of time and money in the process.

The fact that travel to Riviera Maya has never been so convenient still doesn’t explain why hotels are being booked months in advance, so why are people rushing so much?

There are two main reasons why those looking to spend their spring in the Mexican Caribbean need to book their tickets like yesterday.

First of all, the newly launched Tulum Airport and Maya Train do have something to do with the situation – now that visiting the region has become easier than ever, more people are flocking to the hotspots of Riviera Maya, which, in turn, means that those looking to find the perfect place to stay need to get ahead of millions of other travelers.

Secondly, it’s a well-known fact that sorting out the logistics of an upcoming trip (think travel and accommodation) a couple of months in advance can end up saving you hundreds of dollars, again, because you’re moving ahead of the general demand and hotels have yet to hike up their prices.

What’s more, Skyscanner shows that March through May is the cheapest time to fly to Tulum, one of the region’s most popular destinations, so those planning to get the most bang for their buck need to act quickly.

Travel booking giant Expedia has examined flight search data from its users for the period between March 5 and April 26 to determine which domestic destinations will be most popular for this year’s spring break – and the results are fascinating.

The list is a comprehensive one that covers all the bases for each kind of spring break vacationer – here’s the top 7:

7. Fort Lauderdale, Florida

A quieter and slightly less expensive destination than nearby Miami, Fort Lauderdale is becoming an incredibly popular pick for spring break travelers.

With a 24-mile stretch of beautiful beaches and fantastic restaurants that specialize in seafood and Latin-influenced cuisine, Fort Lauderdale has all the ingredients for a great spring break.

If you’re looking to keep spending down, many of its attractions are free such as Anne Kolb Nature Center, Fort Lauderdale Swap Shop flea market, and concerts at Hollywood Beach Broadwalk.

6. Phoenix, Arizona

A record number of people flew through Phoenix’s Harbor International Airport last year, showcasing that it’s a firm favorite among travelers.

The weather in Phoenix in spring is ideal, with March temperatures usually averaging around 75F and very low levels of rainfall.

There are plenty of great events to help you enjoy a party atmosphere, such as M3F Festival (March 1-2) and Innings Festival (February 23-24) – both of which feature live music and amusements.

5. New York, New York

The ‘Big Apple’ will always be one of the most popular domestic destinations at any time of year.

That was proven in 2023 when a record number of travelers flew through the three major airports that serve NYC.

Away from its unrivaled selection of incredible restaurants covering the entire price scale, New York has several chilled things you can enjoy during spring such as a walk along the High Line, which will be bursting with floral color.

4. Los Angeles, California

Los Angeles has the perfect spring break combination of amazing nightclubs and bars to dance the night away, as well as golden sandy beaches to slowly bring yourself back to life under the warm sun the next day.

There’s almost no end to the excellent hotels you can choose to stay at in Los Angeles as well as some unique spots to take in the views over the city while you enjoy a cocktail such as 71Above and Perch LA.

In between parties, Los Angeles offers the opportunity to tour its famous movie studios and even has many miles of hiking trails throughout the city to help you walk off the hangover.

3. Miami, Florida

For great food, culture, and nightlife, American cities don’t come much better equipped than Miami.

This beloved Floridian destination has been breaking all kinds of records for tourism over the last year, and it looks set to remain popular as we move into this spring.

However, one thing to be aware of with Miami this year is that local authorities have been talking about introducing curfews for spring break this year between midnight and 6am in popular locations such as South Beach.

This is due to some issues the city experienced last year with unruly revelers and crime.

2. Las Vegas, Nevada

Fresh from breaking a tourism record in 2023 and then hosting the Super Bowl this February, it seems that Las Vegas is an even more exciting place to visit than usual right now.

And with more affordable flights than ever heading into ‘Sin City’ combined with accommodation prices that seem to have stayed a little lower compared to many other major American destinations, it makes an ideal place to enjoy thawing out after winter.

1. Orlando, Florida

There really is something for all the family in Orlando.

From the theme parks to some truly world-class dining and nightlife, this city seems like it was ready-made for a spring vacation.

Despite its remote location, it’s one of the best places to see the state flower explode in color – the pretty Lupinus subcarnosus, otherwise simply known as bluebonnets.

Wildflower season only adds to the allure with its already stunning scenery. Here, however, outdoor lovers can experience the rare Yellow mariposa lily and California jewelflower in addition to more common colorful wildflowers like lupines, poppies, and monkey flowers.

Joshua Tree National Park

This quirky side of California isn’t just upscale desert towns and world-famous music festivals. Joshua Tree National Park, just outside of Palm Springs, is one of the best gambles to witness a superbloom.

Commonly a Spring destination given the great weather, eye-popping flower blooms are just another excuse to visit.

Named after the odd-looking Joshua trees, nature lovers have found the right place with endless sights for photo-ops given the additional 250 species of wildflowers to see, including the California poppy.

Flowers tend to bloom in early spring in lower elevations, rising to higher elevations into the summer months.

A shoulder-season vacation is the perfect way to get out of that wintery mindset and relieve yourself from the stresses of day-to-day life; however, there’s a catch.

Prices are skyrocketing and summer travel plans always take priority, which leaves those trying to get out of their hometown rut this spring on a pretty tight budget, especially when it comes to flying overseas.

Luckily for us, Europe, one of the world’s most coveted hotspots this time of year, is filled with stunning yet reasonably-priced destinations, granted, so long as you look beyond massively popular destinations like London or Paris.

In fact, Statista just came out with its own list of the cheapest European cities you can visit this spring based on their daily price index, and these were the 5 places that dominated the ranking:

5. Sarajevo

The Bosnia and Herzegovina capital is one of Eastern Europe’s most underrated destinations, and I’m sure that everyone who’s gotten to see just how much value you get for your money here will agree.

With average daily costs evaluated to be just under $50, Sarajevo is the ideal city for travelers who want to experience the region’s rich history and culture on a budget.

Here, you can stroll through the cobbled streets of the Old Bazaar (otherwise known as Baščaršija), go on a free sightseeing tour of the Latin Bridge and the Eternal Flame, and even take a few breaks in between to try some of the mouthwatering local dishes, like gulaš, burek, and ćevapi, oftentimes for less than what you’d pay here in the U.S. for a single cup of coffee.

4. Budapest

Famous for its stunning architecture, thermal baths, and impressive nightlife, the “Pearl of the Danube” adds yet another win to its long list of successes – being named one of the best budget-friendly destinations in all of Europe.

One thing I loved about visiting Budapest is the fact that even though you’ll be paying far less than what you would in bigger, better-known destinations, the sights you’ll get to experience here are akin to what you’d see in the likes of Prague or Vienna.

That’s why those dying to take a picture of that quintessential European city skyline will find Budapest to be everything they’d wished for and more.

Iconic landmarks like the Buda Castle, the Fisherman’s Bastion, and the Hungarian Parliament Building can be visited either completely free of charge or by paying a modest entry fee (the most expensive is the latter, which charges non-EEA citizens roughly $30 per adult).

3. Krakow

While the allure of Paris, along with its history attractions, is undeniable, there’s a level of warmth, authenticity, and affordability to Bucharest that makes the latter, dare I say, better in some contexts than the famous French capital.

Well, there’s good news and bad news. Let’s start with the bad news. According to a new survey, only 25% of Americans plan to take a vacation within the U.S. this year. Borrrring!

But…the good news is one of the most fun ways to travel is destined to make an epic comeback this year.

While the first set of survey results are a downer since there are so many awesome places in the U.S. to explore, at least there’s hope for a resurgence for a long lost travel trend.

While digital nomadism and solo travel are taking over the planet, there is an old-school way of seeing the world.

Now that winter plans are coming to a close, the classic all-American road trip is calling travelers’ names yet again this spring.

No more icy roads and snow plows, just open roads and blue skies to some of America’s top destinations.

Survey Says…

The American Survey (powered by What If Media Group) resulted in U.S. travelers ready to put rubber to pavement this spring.

A majority of participants, 63% in fact, will pack up their bags and travel exclusively by car on their next trip.

A variety of factors have caused travelers to come to this decision to revive a classic way to see the sites.

Most importantly, revenge travel is best served by any means necessary. If that means sticking the highways and backroads at 60 mph rather than taking to the skies at nearly tenfold speeds, that’s what travelers are ready to do.

But, why now?

Lower Fuel Prices

In a world emerging with electric cars, they’re not exactly catered to road trips with the extra pit stops to charge up and the sweat-induing range anxiety drivers face.

You can’t turn on the news without hearing back-and-forth political ping-pong about gas prices, but the reality is fuel has dropped significantly since last September.

Remember the rental car fiasco after the pandemic too? Well, that’s long gone as well. The bottom line is traveling by car is a whole lot cheaper nowadays.

These cost-saving measures are much more appealing now and just in time to make plans for Spring Break.

Nostalgia

Ever have those thoughts of “the good ol’ days”? We all do. Being that we live in just a fast-paced society, sometimes it’s nice to take a step back.

In other words, the ‘scenic route’ can be much more enjoyable than the give-to-me-now way. Despite airfare dropping as well, travelers are seeking nostalgic experiences.

Maybe you have the desire to visit a place you went to as a child or are just seeking peace by listening to the radio on a long drive rather than being force-fed music by algorithms.

There’s no right or wrong answer, but we all seek it in one way or another. Growing up, we probably all had our own dreams of traveling, but we definitely all had the same dream of getting our drivers license.

There’s just something intangible about an all-American road trip.

Avoid The Hassles

Air travel may be the safest, but it can also be the most frustrating in multiple ways. From overbearing TSA agents to flight delays to being herded like cattle and being squeezed into tight spaces, at least you have more control behind the wheel.

Sure, you may hit some traffic jams depending on where you’re going, but is there anything worse than flight delays or even cancellations altogether?

Booking flights to far-flung places is undoubtedly the most efficient, but when it comes to visiting destinations in our own backyard, road trips became a lost art.

Flying over the ocean, National Parks and iconic cities does provide incomparable views, but a coastal drive or the infamous Route 66 is a whole different vibe planes just can’t match.

Plus, bringing pets on planes is a near-impossible task. You can bring the whole crew with nobody’s permission needed and enjoy the open road at your own pace.
