Travel experts at TimeOut named the top 11 places to kick off fall in October with only a few U.S. destinations making the cut.

While a pair of iconic cities were no surprise, taking the top spot is a state many travelers overlook, yet it’s one of the most affordable and culturally rich states to visit, and you don’t have to pack your favorite sweater unless you want to, as TimeOut claims New Mexico temps average 72 across the board.

Fall is jam-packed with fun things to do — whether you’re diving into UFO lore, booking a stay in a centuries-old adobe, exploring stunning nature without the beaming desert sun, or celebrating one of America’s unique festivals.

New Mexico: TimeOut’s Top U.S. Destination This Fall

New Mexico is home to some of America’s most storied towns, no matter if it’s former goldmine rushes, Wild West shootouts, or an alleged crashed site of little green beings.

Today, New Mexico can be considered the Southwest’s last frontier. You don’t see many changes in this underrated state’s most sought-after getaways — maybe a new restaurant, but rarely any shifting skylines.

Laden with astounding mountains spreading from Las Cruces, New Mexico’s second largest city, all the way north to Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and the delightful UNESCO-protected town of Taos, there’s no shortage of ways to traverse the magic of the “Land of Enchantment”.

In between, there are cozy mountain towns, relaxing hot springs, and roadside must-stops like Hatch, the “Chile Capital of the World”.

In other words, New Mexico is perfect for road trips. No matter if you fly into Albuquerque, Santa Fe, or even the corner of Texas, El Paso to start from Las Cruces and work your way up, the only traffic jams are tumbleweeds and loose cattle.

Discover 3 Destinations TimeOut Missed

As someone who used to visit New Mexico every month (and who thinks Albuquerque is a snoozefest), I can’t help but reveal 3 getaways TimeOut didn’t highlight.

Living in El Paso, I was fortunate to be at a crosspoint of cultures — Texas 🤠, Mexico 🌮, and New Mexico 🌶️.

As such, venturing across state lines was easy, and honestly one of the most scenic getaways this side of the States.

Mesilla:

Under an hour from El Paso International Airport lies the map-dot village of Mesilla.

This tiny hideaway was a monthly escape for me to indulge in New Mexico’s under-hyped cuisine, peruse local shops, and enjoy gorgeous hikes winding through the nearby Organ Mountains.

Double Eagle makes a mean spicy marg and their stuffed jalapenos aren’t for the faint of heart — but hey, you’re in pepper country.

The historic main plaza is anchored by a quaint, timeless cathedral known as the Basilica of San Albino and wrapped by inviting local boutiques and insightful museums you can spend hours perusing.

Taos:

If Santa Fe tops your New Mexico wishlist, that’s all fine and dandy. Though if you want to feel a true step back in time, the best alternative in my eyes is Taos.

A walk through town feels like a living museum lined with a UNESCO-protected townscape of traditional adobe homes and picturesque plazas.

Plus, if you’re like me and not a big fan of “Albu-quirky”, visit the Taos Mountain Balloon Rally instead (held Oct. 31 – Nov. 2 this year).

Taos is one of New Mexico’s prettiest destinations for leaf-peepers, too. Ride through the Enchanted Circle for the best photo-ops of luminous aspen groves.

Ruidoso:

Ruidoso is a rustic mountain town to enjoy fall splendor away from the city grind, though it’s been plagued by natural disasters in recent years.

As of July 25, locals’ favorite getaway officially announced it’s embracing tourists after being ravaged by floods and previous wildfires, but storms have caused more havoc this month, so there may be another update in store.

Fall is typically one of the best times to visit to enjoy gold aspens, cool hiking weather, and cozy lodges to curl up by the fireplace.

There are 2 stunning lakes in the area for scenic strolls and fishing, but Inn of the Mountain Gods has another lake with boat rides — and it’s arguably the most popular stay in town, drawing big-name performers for live shows, including Luke Bryan.

‘Take Me Home’ To West Virginia’s Majestic State Park

With the kids back in school, that’s not the only sigh of relief this fall. You can visit breathtaking destinations in a postcard setting.

Yosemite or Yellowstone likely come to mind first when it comes to a dreamy getaway surrounded by lush nature, but don’t skip the flip side of America that somehow largely remains under wraps.

Appalachia is quite a sprawl covering numerous states, but one that sticks out the most to avoid the hordes of selfie sticks ready to poke your eye out is West Virginia.

Additionally, the Elakala Falls series comprises a set of four alternative cascades along Shay Run.

Whether it be calendars, billboards, or tourists snapping unforgettable pics, Blackwater Falls State Park is one of WV’s most photographed destinations…

…and it’s not solely for the cascading falls.

This park is also a leaf-peeper’s paradise — so much so that West Virginia’s tourism board just released its annual Fall Foliage Forecast so you can time your trip just right to witness the park in its autumn glory.

Lindy Point and Pendleton Point Overlook are the best spots for sweeping views of kaleidoscopic canopies from elevated viewpoints.

The southernmost point of Baja lies Mexico’s most luxurious beach destination, Los Cabos. Lined with picture-perfect resorts with all the all-inclusive amenities you could want, it simply doesn’t get much better.

And even as party-centric as Cabo can be, the mega-popular vacation spot remains safe for tourists.

Los Cabos is the biggest draw for southern Baja, but tranquil coastal cities like La Paz and delightful small beach towns like Todos Santos are making a name for themselves as well.

Oaxaca

Oaxaca is a vastly cultural city and state of the same name, but the state’s beaches are where its natural beauty shines through.

Both the city and beaches are major hubs for digital nomads.

The coastal city of Puerto Escondido has soared in popularity with remote workers, which speaks volumes since digital nomads don’t exactly seek out unsafe places to call home.

The state of Oaxaca is stunning and you can’t go wrong visiting Puerto Escondido, Huatulco, or the smaller lesser-known gems dispersed along the coast.

Veracruz

Veracruz is a great example of why Mexico should be given more of a chance to prove mainstream news wrong.

In fact, it’s well on its way in doing so as the port city has surged in popularity. Despite some minor nuisances, Veracruz is very safe for tourists.

Tourists love exploring the centuries-old streets lined with colonial architecture, but Veracruz also has nice beaches within close reach.

Roughly 20 minutes away lies miles of sandy beaches along the Costa Esmerelda, including scenic islands to visit just off-shore.

Nayarit

The state of Nayarit is home to a 200-mile long stretch of coastline that has caught the attention of beach lovers.

As one of the trendiest destinations in Mexico this year, seemingly endless beaches are obviously a huge reason for that.

Safety plays a huge factor, too.

Although Puerto Vallarta is technically in the state of Jalisco, given its popularity and close distance to Nayarit, it’s fair to add this mega-popular beach city to the equation as one of the safest in Mexico.

Sometimes travelers tend to look beyond what’s right at home when seeking an awesome trip.

With all the hoops travelers had to jump through simply to have a passport after the world shut down, it’s easy to see why it’s so tempting to use it.

The U.S. is a phenomenal place to explore, however. Iconic cities, National Parks, and stunning beaches are just a few to highlight in the good ol’ U.S. of A.

There are still places not often discussed as top getaways, with one being the smallest state in America.

Springtime is great to take the Rhode less traveled. No, we’re not talking about the phenomenal Greek island of Rhodes, as incredible as it may be.

We’re talking about the delightful gem of New England – the pint-sized state of Rhode Island.

Phenomenal Stays

Easily overlooked, yet loved by those who visit, Rhode Island is the runt of a litter of 50. Often overshadowed by the familiar household names of the East Coast, it’s Rhode Island’s time to shine this spring.

One key reason is the drop-dead gorgeous coastal town of Newport, often the cream of the crop of any Rhode Island trip.

With winter coming to a close sooner rather than later, Newport is a springtime treasure filled with luxury.

It may not be on the same playing field as, say, Beverly Hills, but many celebrities own multi-million dollar mansions in the vicinity, such as Jay Leno and America’s unofficial Queen, Taylor Swift.

This is just the tip of the iceberg as the town of Newport exudes charm and luxury along amazing coastlines.

Vacationers have so many options to choose from for a luxurious stay, but the newly revamped Newport Harbor Island Resort takes the cake after a $50 million facelift.

Set to open April 15th, the resort calls nearby Goat Island home, which is ironic considering Rhode Island is not really a proper island.

But there is no island experience better for a Rhode Island getaway than staying at this idyllic retreat.

The Charm Of Newport

If you have heard of anyone paying Newport a visit, the coastal town is at its peak for tourism in the summer months.

Lined with beautiful scenery along the coast with plentiful nice beaches with some walkable from downtown’s charming streets.

Besides driving around ooh-ing and ahh-ing at the seemingly endless mega-mansions, the top attraction of Newport is, inarguably, the Cliff Walk, with picture-perfect views.

Since Newport gets jam-packed with tourists in summer, spring is an amazing time to visit and take in all the sites with more elbow room.

The town center is very walkable with lovely shops, local eats, and vibrant historic buildings. Plus, the splendid weather is an added bonus, especially from late April through May.

New Cheap Flights

Any time we consider traveling to a new place, the question “how much is it?” surely comes up. While flying directly into Boston is quite popular to reach Rhode Island, the capital city does have a variety of flight options.

Providence is very nice on its own and home to one of America’s few Ivy League Universities – Brown University.

A mix of small-town charm, college town, and culture of a big city with neighborhoods like Little Italy, Providence is fun in its own right with all the makings for a weekend getaway.

No matter if you’re going to Newport or not, Providence is worthy of a stop at the very least, especially to check out the one-of-a-kind Waterfire event kicking off in April.

Reaching the state has never been easier with the expansion of low-cost airline Breeze Airways’ new direct flights into Providence from all of the U.S., from Los Angeles to Pittsburgh, and many more.

The latest flight routes by Breeze will service Providence (PVD) this spring from Greenville/Spartanburg on May 3rd and Cincinnati, Columbus, and Denver on May 16th.

Sun Country and Allegiant also fly here for budget travelers. Southwest will also offer new flights from Dallas and Denver beginning June 8th.

There will also be some major new family-friendly attractions including the renovated and rebranded Margaritaville Fins Up Water Park in Buford, and the opening of the Georgia Safari Conservation Park in April.

The safari park will feature luxury accommodation including suites that overlook some of the exotic animals that live there.

Hotel Choice Keeps Growing

Georgia is a varied state and due to growing interest from all different kinds of travelers, a lot of money has been spent on creating new hotels and redeveloping existing ones.

In Atlanta, a new Signia by Hilton Atlanta hotel is set to open in January with no fewer than 967 guest rooms.

Also set to open in January is the boutique Trillith Guesthouse in Fayetteville, home to the famous tv and movie studio Trillith Studios.

February will see the opening of Cloudland at McLemore Resort Lookout Mountain, which will offer a wellness spa, mountaintop golf course, and unbeatable views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and McLemore Cove.

And for those who love being near the coast in Georgia, Hotel Bardo Savannah will open in the city’s historic Forsyth Park Mansion in February.

A Quieter Winter Destination

If you’ve read all this and you’re thinking that you simply cannot wait until spring or summer to visit Georgia, then you’re in luck because the state is an enjoyable winter destination that is very underrated.

Whether you want to hunker down in a cabin in a mountainous wilderness or enjoy the beautiful barrier islands along the coastline, winter is a great time to visit with lower prices and fewer crowds.

While not as warm as southern neighbor Florida, Georgia offers temperatures ranging from 50F to 60F during its winter, which is usually shorter and milder than most other states.

While the idea of sun, sand, and surf is very appealing during the wintertime, sometimes it’s actually kind of nice to embrace the true meaning of the season.

That means getting hunkered down in a cozy cabin in front of a roaring fire while the snow falls on the mountains and pine trees outside.

It’s a dreamy winter travel vision in its own right, and luckily the United States has some of the best places on earth to live out this fantasy.

Perhaps the most popular, and with very good reason, is the state of Colorado.

Whether it’s skiing, fine dining, luxury wellness spas, or just hanging out in hipster mountain towns, this winter wonderland has so much to offer…

Winter Sports Paradise

It’s well-known that Colorado is home to some of the best skiing locations on the planet, with towns such as Vail, Aspen, and Breckenridge among the favorites.

There are more than 1,500 miles of ski slopes in the state, served by 28 ski resorts and over 300 ski lifts – so even when it gets busy, you’ll always be able to find somewhere to go.

It’s not only downhill winter sports that are unrivaled here; you can also partake in snowshoeing or cross-country skiing at one of the many Nordic Centers in Colorado, as well as try your hand at dog sledding, snow tubing, or even snowmobiling.

Despite the cold, Colorado boasts many sunny days in winter and very dry snow, so being out in it all day doesn’t feel like a chore.

An Appetite For Après

After any amount of winter sports, you’re going to be ready to eat.

But one of the great things about Colorado is that it’s fast-becoming a recognized foodie destination, so you could go there just for the food if skiing isn’t your thing.

Boulder, Aspen, and Vail are all home to some incredible restaurants, with brewhouse-style grub being one of the main things they excel at.

The state even has a growing number of Michelin starred restaurants for those seeking luxury dining.

Scenery Like Nowhere Else

About half of Colorado is mountainous, making it a place where breathtaking scenery is just part and parcel of being there.

While some of the main hiking trails may be a little less accessible in winter, there are still plenty of places to catch a glimpse of a stunning vista at this time of year.

The valley town of Breckenridge is best viewed from Boreas Pass Road, while Pikes Peak Summit near Colorado Springs can still be viewed from Garden of the Gods in winter.

Another great sight to witness is the Colorado National Monument, which you can check out from several different lookout points around Monument Canyon.

Ensure that you are prepared for winter driving conditions and keep an eye on snowfall in the weather forecast if you’re on a sightseeing trip in a car.

Mountain Towns Are A Vibe

There’s just something about being in a mountain town that gets your inner party animal going.

One place where you can enjoy the nightlife long after the sun has gone down is Colorado Springs, which is predicted to be one of the trending travel destinations in 2024 according to a recent study by Airbnb.

Then there’s the state’s biggest city, Denver, which is known for its great music scene, welcoming bars, and a large number of independent breweries.

Warm Up The Cold Winter

The wellness scene in Colorado is excellent, and one of the best ways to experience it is by staying at one of the many amazing hot springs.

There are almost 30 different hot springs in the state covering everything from ultimate luxury to family-friendly resorts – all of which will leave you feeling recharged and cleansed thanks to their warm waters that are naturally rich in minerals.
