Though there’s no official launch date for the train, our sources confirm ‘as early as Spring 2026′ to hopefully line up perfectly with this event.

Otherwise, you can stick to the classics and still have a grand ol’ time flipping the pages back through a pastime era, where Stirling Castle was the key to Scotland’s throne and church bells of the Holy Rude echoed down below to one of the UK’s most vibrant Old Towns — all still standing the test of time and open to visit.

Of course, a visit to such a storied city wouldn’t be right without stepping foot into a traditional pub to grab a local pint.

The Settle Inn is Stirling’s ‘oldest alehouse’, holding rave reviews and reasonable prices for such a popular community staple.

Plus, you might want to be a little loosey-goosey visiting some of Stirling’s grim attractions like the Beheading Stone, a literal chopping block for treasonous citizens, dating back to medieval times.

Fall is quite literally a breath of fresh air. No matter if it’s apple orchards, wineries, rustic mountain towns, or lakeside hideaways popping with a rush of autumn colors, it’s a great time to enjoy the outdoors.

Fall Starts Early In Bemidji, Minnesota

Minnesotans may sound funny pronouncing their own state, but this hidden gem is no laughing matter. If you’re chomping at the bit ready to immerse in autumn’s glory, stop planning months ahead to visit other destinations’ peak leaf-peeping season.

Bemidji said goodbye to summer already while much of the nation is in the awkward phase of not knowing if it’s the tail-end of summer or the beginning of fall.

Already beginning to shed pine needles and see lush green forestry, it transforms into a variety of burnished fall tones, this town is already beginning to glow like a postcard.

The best time to visit Bemidji solely for the best photo-ops is now to mid-October, as winter vibes arrive earlier than most in comparison.

Bemidji is home to rightfully named Lake Bemidji, a glacially formed lake sourced by the flowing Mississippi River — and this is hands down the best spot to enjoy luminous foliage with a variety of activities.

Lake Bemidji State Park not only exudes quintessential fall charm with its natural curtain of autumnal hues, but it’s also a year-round getaway to enjoy the outdoors.

Yep, even in the throes of winter, this lush state park offers those willing to brave the winter chills with groomed cross-country ski trails, snowshoeing and snowmobiling, and cozy, heated cabins when warm, velvety cups of PSLs won’t quite do the trick.

Fall, though, sees all-but-empty trailheads, mirror-still water, and the same cabins (but you may not need the heater), though there are ample campsites available too, with free wifi so you can upload your epic pics right away.

Hilton recommends the following activities during the fall:
- Rent a bike and ride the shores
- Go wildlife spotting (be aware of black bears!)
- Paddle the calm lake in a kayak or canoe
- Fish for walleye and muskellunge
Most notably, there’s also the popular 115-mile-long Paul Bunyan State Trail (hence the flannel vibes), offering a seemingly endless maze of trails deep into the towering woodlands.

Where To Eat & Stay

It goes without saying, in most cases small towns equate to incredible eats. Another unknown fact about Bemidji is that it’s an underrated college town, home to Bemidji State University — and you know how most students spend their weekends.

I mean, with the surge of AI, is anyone really doing homework anymore?

There are fun bars dotting the small townscape, some with more college vibes than others. A good middle ground for 30-somethings grasping onto every last ounce of youth like me is Bemidji Brewing, holding a near-perfect Google rating.

Plus, does anything go better together than a scenic fall hike, a checkered flannel, and a local craft brewskie? Negative.

But perhaps the best place to fuel back up after a fun-filled day spent outdoors is Tutto Bene, serving made-from-scratch Italian cuisine and an impressive selection of wine.

As for where to stay, of course, Hilton is going to mention their own DoubleTree Hotel Bemidji, but it is Bemidji’s top-rated hotel on TripAdvisor.

Fiji seems out of reach, but you’d be shocked at how easy it is to reach one of the world’s most beautiful island locales.

According to Flight Connections, you can fly direct from 5 US cities to Fiji’s main island of Nadi, and given its popularity, more people are taking advantage.

Upon arrival, you’ll be welcomed by stunning shores only comparable to your desktop screensaver — you know, the type of vacation that doesn’t seem attainable.

The Golden Mile is where you want to be. Lined with Zulu, Indian, and colonial influences, Durban is more of a foodie destination than Cape Town, too — and generally more affordable.

With cheaper stays like the 5-star Hilton Durban under $100 per night, and an array of beach activities such as surfing, Durban is finally having its shining moment — literally.

The weather is bright and sunny year-round, making for an awesome trip any season.

2) Fancy A Beach Day? Visit Newcastle’s Blue-Flag Certified Shores

As scenic as the River Thames may be, backdropped by timeless marvels, people don’t visit London for sunny beach days.

In fact, if you believed the UK’s dreary reputation, people wouldn’t really visit here for Vitamin D, but the latest statistics say otherwise.

More travelers are picking up on the fact that the UK is indeed a beautiful beach getaway, albeit fall sees dwindling temps, which are not always suitable for a nice swim.

No matter the season, the UK’s phenomenal coastline is a sight to behold, and Newcastle (technically Newcastle upon Tyne) is surging the most.

Though the delightful city of Newcastle is home to classic pubs, the unmissable Newcastle Castle, intriguing museums, and a great balance of city life and sprawling countryside, it’s the neighboring beach towns that steal the show.

Whitley Bay and Tynemouth both boast Blue Flag-certified shores in 2025, the highest designation beaches can receive for cleanliness, safety, and environmental standards.

1) Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo: Mexico’s Trendiest Beach Destination

Not to hijack my own article, but I’m switching to first-person because Ixtapa is my favorite beach destination in Mexico.

I had the pleasure of visiting this coastal gem for the first time this year, and have yet to find an answer to why it’s so under-hyped, especially since I keep telling people it’s prettier than Cabo and home to a secret island, Isla Ixtapa, that feels worlds away from overcrowded household names.

However, the neighboring town of Zihuatanejo (referred to as “Zihua” to save a mouthful), has become the trendier side of Guerrero’s diamond in the rough.

The posh Hyatt-brand boutique resort Thompson Zihuatanejo put this town on travelers’ radars with its grand opening years ago, and has slowly gained steam ever since, becoming one of Mexico’s biggest surprises.

Speaking of Thompson, if you’re seeking to mix beachside bliss with one of Mexico’s most festive times of the year, check out their Dia de los Muertos celebrations held on October 31st, where you can stroll through town and partake in the lighting of the Catrina in the Plaza Kioto and savor the flavor of local eats and festivities.

JetBlue Launching New Flights To 7 Stunning International Destinations This Fall

America’s hippest airline (sorry Spirit, bankruptcy isn’t cool) is set to launch new flights to 7 stunning international destinations in the coming months.

Here at Travel Off Path, there’s nothing we love more than making use of our passports. Letting our most prized possession collect dust in any season just isn’t acceptable in our eyes.

All of us here have exciting trips coming up, but even so, we’re a little envious of South Floridians who get to take advantage of these new flights, especially with JetBlue’s celebratory $113 promotional fares that surely won’t last long.

That being said, it’s time to whip out your credit card and get ready to choose from these 7 thrilling sun-drenched getaways launching soon.

3 New Flights To Caribbean Islands

We’ve all seen it 👆— the iconic photos of planes landing in what seems like arm’s reach over vibrant St. Maarten shores.

JetBlue already flies to St. Maarten, but not from Fort Lauderdale (FLL), the airport set to welcome all 7 of the airline’s new flights, according to their latest announcement.

First up is St. Maarten, one of the fastest-growing tourist destinations in the world. This Dutch territory is renowned as one of the Caribbean’s most postcard-worthy destinations for an epic beach vacation, boasting pristine shores and lagoons.

Falling slightly behind in the fastest-growing department is another Dutch Caribbean paradise — the gorgeous island of Aruba.

Beyond funny accents, you’ll find gleaming white-sand beaches, crystal-clear waters, and world-class resorts, plus the opportunity to snap selfies with flamingos.

JetBlue will launch a new flight here too, in addition to the ritzy resort-laden island, Grand Cayman, the largest and most sought-after of the Cayman Islands.

Inaugural flights to St. Maarten, Aruba, and Grand Cayman are all slated for take-off December 4, 2025.

2 New Flights To Vibrant Colombian Cities

If you want to mix more rich culture with your dreamy beach days, Colombia is just the place.

While travelers have been flocking to Medellin smack dab in the middle of the country, don’t let this inland haven of expats and nomads deter you from exploring Colombia’s vibrant coast, especially as cheaply as they are to visit.

First up is Cartagena, Colombia’s most renowned coastal city on the Caribbean side. Modern meets old-school with beautiful beaches (including nearby towns) and UNESCO-protected streets to explore, where grabbing a coffee is a must from one of many cafes lining the cobbled maze of roadways.

Second is Cali. This inland city can easily be considered Medellin 2.0 for its affordability and mild year-round climate, though it’s more steeply ingrained in culture, being known as the country’s “Salsa Capital”.

JetBlue’s new flight to Cali has yet to officially be scheduled, as there are some bureaucratic hurdles to clear before serving this city for the first time ever, but the route to Cartagena will also launch on December 4, 2025.

2 New Flights To Astounding Central American Destinations

Costa Rica has seen a mixed bag of reviews with tourism numbers dropping, which can certainly be attributed to numerous safety concerns reported over the last 6 months or so, including a US Embassy-issued security alert regarding the country’s main airport in San Jose.

Well, we don’t know if that deterred JetBlue from flying here, but it’s not stopping them from flying to Costa Rica’s alternative airport, Liberia (Guanacaste), which is is the more luxurious side of the country.

Viewed as the easiest gateway to Costa Rica’s Pacific coast, you’ll find a plethora of luxe resorts, picturesque beach towns, and lush nature to wander with an array of wildlife sightings.

On the flip side of luxury is Honduras, a country largely overlooked (and somewhat undeveloped) for tourism, yet those who visit actually compare it as a more affordable, up-and-coming “Costa Rica” given its cheap prices across the board and seemingly untouched nature and magnetizing culture.

I, for one, had the chance to visit last year and particularly fell in love with the town of Copan Ruinas, home to immaculately preserved Mayan ruins and an easy bus ride from San Pedro Sula, where JetBlue will also soon fly from Fort Lauderdale.

New routes to the latter and Liberia are set to launch December 4, 2025 as well.

Dublin is typically your gateway into Ireland.

Despite the classic pubs, cobbled streets, and friendly locals, going beyond the city is where the country really shines.

Besides Dublin, travelers can fly directly to multiple airports in Ireland, such as Shannon and Cork.

By doing so, the country’s delightful villages are often overlooked in the midst of being captivated by Ireland’s astounding coastlines and storybook castles.

One such town has been named one of Ireland’s most scenic escapes where the atmosphere is like a ‘movie set‘.

With virtually no crowds and stunning medieval sites, it’s time to wave goodbye to the city life and say hello to the picturesque town of Inistioge.

A Storybook Town Steeped In Fascinating History

Travel anxiety can cause us to overthink where to go; I’m certainly guilty of it.

Heck, I’ve lived in San Diego 10 years and I’m just now visiting local hotspots I’ve shoved aside far too long.

The point is that Ireland is one of those destinations where plans can go out the window.

There are just too many amazing places to cover in a single trip.

That being said, if you want to experience a truly authentic Irish town where welcoming locals are ready to show off their beloved hideaway, then Inistioge is the answer to your unfinished travel plans.

Despite being off travelers’ radar, Inistioge has developed the ‘Heritage Trail’ for anyone ready to give their delightful community a fair shake.

This quaint village goes back deep to prehistoric times to where, as legend has it, the ancient Osraige tribe defeated Olaf Cuaran, King of Dublin, way back in 964.

Today, Inistioge is designated as a National Monument and protected under the National Monuments Act, giving more credence to the intriguing 23-stop Heritage Trail, featuring long-standing castles, landmark homes, and old-world churches.

Find Your Zen In Inistioge’s Beautiful Natural Settings

Dublin is a great city, but finding some of your inner peace amongst always-busy streets is a hard sell.

Sure, you can find a quiet corner of a pub until the ‘auld fellas’ burst into an impromptu sesh of harmonic Irish folk songs.

Well, Inistioge is the anti-Dublin in many aspects. One key reason is the pretty scenery and tranquility.

The Woodstock Gardens & Arboretum is a must-visit while here.

Entry is only $5.50 to gain access to gorgeous gardens, scenic trails, ancient trees, and yes, even flowing waterfalls along a specified trail.

This is also where you’ll find one of the city’s most historic landmarks – the Woodstock House, dating back to the 1700s and still going strong for her age.

You can spend all day perusing the expansive grounds and take advantage of the best views of the entire village and parallel River Nore.

Best of all, you can fuel up or cap off your day at the grounds’ charming tea rooms. But don’t wait too long – tea rooms close October through April!

Receiving high praise across the board, one recent visitors revealed, “Woodstock Gardens is a perfect place to visit with family and friends, even better it’s dog friendly. Really lovely walk around the gardens and into the wood, you can really spend as much as as little time as you’d like.”

Getting Here And Where To Stay

Inistioge is located in Kilkenny County, away from other major cities.

Many of Ireland’s most popular destinations are spread out, working in Inistioge’s favor, as you can conveniently fly into Dublin or Cork.

From Dublin, you can hop aboard a train or bus to Kilkenny, then transfer busses or hail a cab to Inistioge.

Expect train tickets to start around $10 by booking directly through the Irish Rail.

You could rent a car too but know that Ireland does require International Driver’s Licenses for non-European residents.

From Cork, it’s a longer train ride but only about $6 more than Dublin.

The same goes for departures from Shannon, with an additional stop, meaning Dublin is the most feasible overall.

Upon arrival, don’t expect the familiar name-brands and eyesore chain restaurants. Inistioge boasts a sense of real Ireland with traditional pubs and homey Bed & Breakfasts.

It’s been well-documented some Barcelonians are giving the cold shoulder to tourists at this point, but Spain is just too good to pass up!

Like many awesome destinations across the globe, crowds can be a nuisance, but many in Barcelona act like they’re in an exclusive club.

The reality is they know the allure of their amazing city, but some prefer to keep it all themselves as hordes of travelers have invaded their city.

Well, Barcelonians aren’t going to be a fan of mine as I reveal their secret getaway to escape their own crowds.

Spoiler alert: it’s Tarragona – a gorgeous beach city a little over an hour away by train from the busy streets of Barcelona.

Better yet, tourists will be welcomed here with open arms by locals.

Direct Flight Or Day Trip: This City Has Been Overlooked Far Too Long!

Side note: How does Europe have so many airports?!

Seriously!

It’s like every nook and cranny is so much easier to reach than the States. Rant over…

While it may be tempting to fly to Barcelona with seemingly endless flight options, you can travel to a lesser-known airport instead.

Those who do choose to come from Barcelona have multiple options too – the most popular being via train, followed by busses.

Renfe offers straight shots as low as $9. The same goes for Alsa’s buses with tickets slightly lower.

But those wanting to avoid Barcelona entirely can fly into Reus Airport (REU) with connecting flights all cross Europe, such as notable cities like Paris, Dublin, London, and Brussels.

This can potentially save you a decent amount of time rather than hopping a bus or train from Barcelona since the airport is only 20 minutes away from Tarragona.

Plus, many flights are “budget airlines,” which can save you a lot on airfare, meaning you’ll have more to spend in this slice of paradise!

Why Barcelonians Love This Place

To be fair, it’s not only Barcelona pulling out the welcome mat from under tourists’ feet.

Amsterdam, Venice, and Athens, among others, have been a bit moody when it comes to welcoming visitors.

What these cities fail to realize is there’s still going to be large amounts of people even if one foreigner never visited.

Barcelona has a population just shy of 2 million people, which isn’t chump change. 2 million people anyway is a large amount, so to solely blame issues just on tourists seems a bit dramatic on the surface.

Any way you slice it, however, Tarragona has been the secret escape from the hustle and bustle of Barcelona as a less-crowded blue water vacation spot surprisingly packed with intriguing historical sites.

The Colosseum is cool and all but what about former gladiator fighting grounds hugging the scenic coastline?

That’s right, there’s a well-preserved Roman theater backdropped by the vast Balearic Sea.

Tarragona is steeped in history, and it shows in the best of ways exploring the quaint city center.

Make sure to stop by Catedral Tarragona, a national monument dating back to the 12th century. But nowadays, it’s most popular for live music and wine tastings.

Ahh, the joys of Spain.

While Barcelonians certainly know how incomparable Spain’s food and wine scene are, other tourists should definitely arrive hungry and hydrated!

Tip: Don’t skip the Central Market of Tarragona dating back to 195 for fresh, savory local cuisine.

Crowd-Free Soft Sand Beaches

Tarragona boasts beautiful coastlines, becoming even more alluring once you realize how much space you have as this picturesque city has long been just a local’s secret.

There are 3 primary beaches to visit here, and you can’t go wrong with any of them. The pretty soft sand rivals many other popular coastlines.

The easiest to reach is Playa del Miracle right in town, or else you can head to Platja Arrabassada or Paltja Savinosa.

The latter being hyped the most for its pristine delicate sand and clear waters. Just be aware you may see more than you bargained for as nudity is welcomed here.

Alaska may seem like a far-flung land, and that’s the case for parts of the state. Some regions are so vast and unexplored that they’re only reachable by plane or boat.

There goes your plans for an epic Alaskan road trip this fall…

One thing Alaska does have going for it is accessibility to some really cool places. It isn’t as lacking as you might expect.

There are plenty of nonstop flights taking you to some truly jaw-dropping destinations. The main gateway, other than cruise ships, is the capital city of Anchorage.

But a 6-hour drive north, the remote city of Fairbanks is full of surprises.

You don’t need to have a passport in hand and fly across the ocean to Iceland or Scandinavia to bear witness to one of nature’s most incredible phenomena.

That’s right, as summer winds down, it may be considered autumn for many, but in this part of the U.S., it’s the start of the Northern Lights season.

America’s Northernmost Airport

Alaska is a beast! If you thought Texas or California were massive, coming to Alaska is a whole different experience as bright skylines and gridlock traffic are few and far between.

Wide open spaces, frequent wildlife sightings, and majestic landscapes will have you forgetting all about city life distractions.

That being said, what would we do without flights? Exploring the world sure would look a lot different.

Even in places as isolated as Fairbanks, you gotta have an airport in this day and age.

Best of all, you don’t need to fly into Anchorage just to make an extra 6-hour journey to reach this underrated city.

What may be most surprising about Fairbanks is that Alaska Airlines actually offers a few flights to America’s northernmost airport.

The good news is that they’re not the only notable carrier serving Fairbanks.

Current nonstop routes to Fairbanks International Airport (FAI):
- United: Chicago (ORD), Denver
- Delta: Seattle (SEA), Minneapolis
- Alaska: Anchorage, Seattle (SEA)
- The rest are ‘puddle jumpers’ I can all but guarantee you’ve never heard of. You may notice American no longer flies here.
Perhaps that’s because the popular airline has a vendetta against liars! Despite being named Fairbanks International Airport, there are no international flights offered here.

Nope, not even to Canada. And especially not Russia, despite being able to see the controversial nation from Alaska’s ‘backyard’.

The Fall Adventure Of A Lifetime

Alaska is brimming with outdoor wonders living up to the moniker of ‘The Last Frontier’.

One thing is for certain – Alaska is made to be explored. There’s no better time for the remainder of 2024 than fall.

Teeth-chattering temps will overtake the state come winter, so it’s best to get a head start on your travel plans for fall.

As the midway point of August is behind us, September should be the focal point. This is the month when Mother Nature’s skies put on a show.

Aurora Borealis, otherwise known as the Northern Lights, illuminates the sky in greens, blues, and occasional pinkish hues from September to spring.

While there are certainly natural phenomena to not look forward to, such as the current hurricane season, seeing the Northern Lights in person is a bucket-list item to splurge on.

As someone fortunate enough to witness the dancing sky myself, there’s really no comparison and photos don’t do it justice.

In fact, my recommendation would be to put your phones away and soak it in. Even with the latest iPhone models, capturing the Northern Lights in their raw essence can be a tough project.

Best to leave it to the pros.

You can always venture out on your own to witness the Northern Lights, but for something really unique, you could try a tour like this one that includes dog sledding in the moonlight, dinner, and the Northern Lights!

Tip: For best viewing, go outside the city away from light pollution.

A Fairbanks Fall Over A Fairbanks Summer

Fairbanks is a bit of an oddball – lots of quirks around here.

Watch The Boneyard to throw your mind for a loop about this place!

Summer is a popular time for the small city, but it can be a nuisance to those who enjoy some shuteye.

Fairbanks sees long summers, meaning many days see 24 hours of nonstop daylight! Thankfully, hotels have heavily invested in blackout curtains, but this should be of minimal concern in fall.

Less crowds, cheaper stays, and the endless fall foliage and wonders of the sky will have you forgetting all about the city life back home in this delightful town.

Portugal’s Stunning Algarve Coast: A Budget European Paradise For Americans

It’s officially a European summer.

Everyone knows someone who is preparing for a trip to Europe, with destinations like Italy, France, and Spain being the most popular European hot spots for American travelers.

But if you’re looking for an alternative that’s outside of the norm then why not consider the Algarve instead?

This stunning coastline is the jewel in Portugal’s crown.

And as an added bonus for travelers on a budget, it’s an affordable destination too.

Here’s what you need to know:

Why The Algarve?

Often called the “California of Europe”, the Algarve has been attracting growing numbers of American travelers this year.

In fact, The Portugal News reports that there has been a 70% increase in American visitors to the Algarve since when compared to pre-pandemic figures.

Don’t worry you probably won’t bump into your neighbors!

The number of Americans visiting Portugal is still much smaller than those visiting the UK, France, or Spain, for example.

But frankly, anyone who hasn’t visited this breathtakingly beautiful region is missing out.

The Algarve is home to an incredible stretch of 155 km of unspoiled beaches.

There are a whopping 150 named beaches here as well as smaller coves and bays, so you’re never far away from soft fine sand and turquoise water.

If you can tear yourself away from the beach, the Algarve also boasts delicious cuisine, a fascinating cultural heritage, and, unlike other European destinations right now, a warm welcome.

As an added bonus, Portugal is a country with a high level of English proficiency, so you won’t have to worry about learning a new language or things being lost in translation on your trip.

Why The Algarve Is A Great Budget Option For American Travelers

Historically, traveling in Portugal has been much cheaper than traveling to other European destinations such as Italy, France, and even its neighbor Spain.

Whilst that gap has closed slightly in the post-COVID world, Portugal still remains the cheapest country to visit in Western Europe.

To test this theory, and give you an idea of how much your trip might cost, I’ve done some research and some sums!

Airfare To The Algarve

The most expensive part of any European vacation will be the airfare, and there’s no getting around the fact that a nonstop flight from the U.S. to Portugal won’t come cheap.

Faro is the Algarve’s regional airport and right now there isn’t a direct route to Faro from the U.S.

United Airlines had planned to launch a route between New York/Newark and Faro in May 2024, and this will still go ahead, but it has been delayed until summer 2025.

Because of this, most American travelers to the Algarve fly into Lisbon and then take the scenic train to the coast, so these prices are based on flights to Lisbon.

You can fly nonstop to Lisbon from Boston, San Fransisco, Miami, New York, Philadelphia and Washington D.C.

For flights from Boston to Lisbon travelling from September 9 to September 16 you will pay $797, at time of research. This flight is with Air Portugal.

For flights from Miami to Lisbon travelling from September 9 to September 16 flights are a little cheaper at $701. This is also an Air Portugal flight.

Eating And Drinking In The Algarve

The cost of eating out in the Algarve is incredibly affordable, especially compared to other European countries and definitely compared to dining out in the U.S.

Of course, there are pricier fine-dining restaurants, and the Algarve also boasts Michelin-starred restaurants with price tags that match their reputations.

But if you want to go to a traditional Portuguese restaurant, then you should expect to pay between €8-13 ($8.60-14) for a main meal.

If you head off the beaten track and avoid the restaurants aimed at tourists, then you’ll find plenty of great restaurants offering a menu completo (a complete 3-course menu) for €10 ($11) ahead.

As a self-respecting Brit, I couldn’t write about eating and drinking on vacation without mentioning the price of a pint! You’ll pay between €1.50-2.50 ($1.60-$2.70 ) for a local beer and around the same price for a glass of wine.

Portuguese wine is excellent, so there’s no need to pay more for imported brands.

Is this cheap? Well, for context, you’d pay €4-5 ($4.30-5.40 ) for a beer in Barcelona, and the average cost of a pint in London is £6.75 ($8.70).

So absolutely!

Where To Stay In The Algarve

There’s no shortage of high-quality beaches and high-quality tourist accommodation options in the Algarve. It has long been a popular vacation destination for both British and German tourists.

So where should you stay in the Algarve? Well for a first visit you should base yourself centrally and in one of the region’s larger towns.

Choose Albufeira if you’re looking for a lively atmosphere and easy access to some of the Algarve’s most beautiful beaches.

Alternatively, Faro is a great pick for a more laid-back and culturally rich vacation experience.

I looked at some accommodation options to go with those September flights I found above.

And a 7 night stay in the 3 star Hotel Ibis Faro Algarve will cost just $795 or $113 per night. If you prefer a 4 star hotel then the Hotel Monaco is coming in at $1,048 or $149 per night. These prices are based on 2 people sharing.

If you’re traveling on a tighter budget, then there are holiday apartments available in both Faro and Albufeira starting from just $40 per night.

‘Fika’ And Freedom: This Stunning Scandinavian Country Is Perfect For Solo Travelers

Who hasn’t needed some “me-time”? America’s standard 40 hour work weeks can drive us all into the ground and sometimes we just need to let our minds and bodies play catch-up.

Vacationing with friends or loved ones can be fun and all, but sometimes some alone time is just what the doctor ordered.

Take it from me, a frequent solo traveler who has heard every unwanted piece of feedback in the book about my travel lifestyle.

If it’s not, “You’re running from your problems”, then it’s “Something bad is going to happen to you!”

Well, if I’m running, then you’re hiding.

Solo travel can be the ultimate reset, and to be honest, profoundly therapeutic. Where to go is always the question.

If you’re alone, keeping yourself entertained and on par with your budget is key. Not every destination fits the mold, but one Scandinavian country is perfect for those of us ready to venture off into the world on our own.

Between ‘Fika’ and a strong sense of independence, Sweden is calling all solo travelers to visit.

Not Every Scandinavian Country Breaks The Banks

Norway and Denmark aren’t exactly backpackers’ favorite budget destinations. I haven’t been to Denmark, but I’ve been to Norway three times.

After paying $8 for a Red Bull in a poor attempt to defeat jet lag upon arriving in Oslo, I knew my bank account was in for a world of hurt.

Sweden, however, doesn’t align with its Scandinavian neighbors. Having just planned a trip myself this fall, I was surprised to discover the low rates of Stockholm hotels.

I booked the Sure Hotel by Best Western Stockholm Alvsjo near a transit line for just $45 per night.

No, it’s nothing special, but oftentimes solo travelers don’t find the need to splurge with a tight budget.

Sweden’s capital city of Stockholm is where you’re likely to spend most of your time and money, for that matter.

With a popular coffee culture, a cup of joe tends to cost just $2-3. Stockholm is easy to get around by public transit (SL) with single rides costing about $4 and even more savings for passes in increments of 24-hour, 72-hour, 7-day and 30-days.

Tip: make sure to keep your transit ticket with you or risk a stiff $140 fine!

Delightful Cities And Stunning Nature: Sweden Has It All!

Sweden’s claim to fame may be Stockholm, a vibrant city encapsulating Scandinavian charm and innovation, offering picturesque cobblestone streets, world-class museums, and a thriving startup scene.

But there is far more to see than Stockholm despite stealing most of Sweden’s spotlight.

There is Malmo, another wallet-friendly city and a gateway into neighboring Denmark, among scattered charming small towns, such as Ystad.

As pretty and fun to explore as Sweden’s main cities and charming towns may be, venturing into Sweden’s abounding nature is a whole other world.

Much to the likes of Iceland, Norway, and Finland, add Sweden to the mix to witness the wonders of the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights), best viewed from September – March.

Wander Abisko National Park to see the Northern Lights in all their glory and hike scenic trails with a vast array of wildlife like reindeer and arctic foxes.

You can explore Sweden’s underrated coastline across the UNESCO-protected Höga Kuste too, perfect for kayaking the calm waters and checking out local villages.

Between urban explorations and natural wonders, solo travelers will never have a dull moment biding time throughout this stunning country.

‘Fika’ Culture: A Swedish Tradition

After reading about Sweden’s Fika culture, I’m beginning to wonder if I should spit in a tube for 23andMe to trace down my Swedish roots.

Pronounced fee-ka, this Swedish custom isn’t your average coffee break. It’s a way of life built on appreciating the smaller things, such as a hot drink and a bite to eat, but catered toward social interactions.

It’s a time to destress and mingle with others while putting phones and laptops away.

Cafes are popular places to hang out, giving solo travelers all the more reason to feel comfortable in Sweden.

Knowing Sweden’s reputation for safety makes it an even more attractive destination as the U.S. State Departments lists Sweden as Level 2 only for terrorism concerns.

Mexico is seeing another level of fame right now, especially in the Mexican Caribbean.

With so many amazing spots to explore, it seems you could spend a lifetime in this one region of Mexico and never get bored.

That being said, there is one city that has yet to gain household recognition, but 2024 just may be the year for that to change.

Chetumal will never be Cancun or even Tulum, but what sets it apart is its own unique charm and history as well as its prime geography.

Along the Mexico-Belize border is a stunning coastal city surging in popularity, filled with authentic charm, incredible nature, and mind-bending beaches in close reach.

Easy Come, Easy Go

It goes without saying Cancun is the easiest access point to the magnificent state of Quintana Roo.

It’s the most popular international vacation destination for Americans.

However, some may not know that the new Tulum airport is not the third international airport in the state. It’s the fourth.

Even with up-and-down spikes in popularity, Chetumal has been maintaining a low profile for years with their pint-size, yet conveniently located, airport.

While direct flights from the U.S. have been nixed, there are ample options with an easy connection through Mexico City.

Going this route will likely still save time over flying into Cancun as Chetumal is 5 hours away by car.

Chetumal is a destination on the new Maya Train and will become even easier to reach when the final stages are expected to open later in 2024.

This, by the way, would make Tulum the better gateway to reach Chetumal for those who don’t want to connect through Mexico City.

Rich In Culture

Chetumal is relatively small but worth a visit within the city limits. The city itself offers stunning views along the coastline.

However, it’s worth noting if you’re planning a trip during the summer months, you will find yourself back in one of the trendy boutique hotels just for air conditioning.

Chetumal is an underrated foodie destination, with a mix of quiet and lively streets, scattered markets, and ‘Mom and Pop’ shops.

This side of Mexico is deeply rooted in Mayan culture, with ruins close to the city and a fascinating Mayan museum in the city center.

Outside the city, there are plentiful sites to see the wondrous Mayan ruins, with the most popular being Kohunlich, Dzibanche, and Xpujil—all well worth a day trip.

Given the close proximity to Belize, there are even more sites to discover across the border.

Nature Abounds

A trip to Chetumal wouldn’t be right without using the city as a gateway to the eye-popping natural wonders nearby.

Many vacationers who jet off to Mexico seek an incredible beach vacation, which is certainly doable around Chetumal.

But others may be seeking more adventure, which also suits Chetumal tourists.

The cenotes in the region are otherworldly and perfect for divers to explore the vibrant aquatic wildlife or for more novice visitors to simply enjoy taking a dip in stunning crystal clear waters.

The Taj Mahal is by far the favorite of travelers because the underwater tunnels are known for a layer of sunlight, adding more color to these underwater tunnels.

If cenotes aren’t your jam and you’re in need of a beach day, there are awesome places to visit for some sun and sand.

In fact, a pair of beach towns within close reach are also surging just as much, if not more, than Chetumal.

Visiting Bacalar, you get the best of both worlds by being able to hit up the beach and cenotes the same day.

Those seeking a small-town exotic escape may be better off in Mahahual, where beachgoers can enjoy picturesque beaches without the crowds, all while staying in trendy boutique hotels.

No matter which you choose, or all of the above, nature abounds around Chetumal, and it is very easy to immerse yourself in some of Mexico’s most gorgeous sites, all within 2 hours from each other.
