This historic city built by the riches of an oil boom has seen decades of growth yet is somehow not typically seen as a top getaway in the U.S.

We at Travel Off Path disagree. So much so, we awarded Dallas as a top 10 destination for 2024. Not only within the U.S., but the world!

Here are 5 reasons why you should visit this Texas city in 2024:

A Foodie Heaven

Ironically, one of the biggest cities in the Bible Belt is a foodie heaven. Dallas is home to just about any type of grub imaginable.

Not often seen as a cultural city, Dallas is full of surprises when it comes to the variety of cuisine you can find across its vast city limits.

Of course, what first comes to mind is jam-packed plates of barbecue. There are so many BBQ joints, locals each have their favorite.

Behind barbecue, Mexican food is another common household argument starter. Although, many would agree the “Mexican food” should be classified as “Tex-Mex”.

There are trendy restaurants of many international cuisines all over, but the ultimate foodie experience each year is the famous Texas State Fair held right here in Dallas.

Dallas even takes a page out of Austin’s book with new food trucks and food halls popping up left and right.

New Developments

Just like your gut after indulging in all of Dallas’s food, the city is expanding outward. One of the trendiest places outside Dallas proper is the booming city of Frisco, which is just 30 minutes from downtown Dallas.

This small town turned trendy city has seen crazy amounts of growth over the years. For tourists, it is a shop-til-you-drop stop on your Dallas getaway.

Home to the 1.6 million square foot Stonebriar Centre, this place gives the Mall of America a run for its money.

Cool Neighborhoods

Denton

For a taste of the traditional, cool off with some retro ice cream from Beth Marie’s on the steps of Denon’s 19th-century courthouse before entering its museum. If the time is right, you can join friendly locals on their monthly wine walks around town.

When the old Denton spell has sucked you in too deep to leave, stay a few nights in the Brownlow House, a 1912 historic landmark Victorian home converted to a bed and breakfast.

Fredericksburg

Fredericksburg shares its German roots with Gruene, but stands out for its unique reputation as Texas’s wine country. With more than 100 vineyards in the area, you can’t go wrong with any of Fredricksburg’s wine tastings.

Timing a trip to Fredericksburg on the first Friday of the month means a special after-hours experience in the art galleries along Main Street.

Visitors can also explore the Enchanted Rock State Natural Area just a few minutes from town. This pink granite monument gets its name from the 19th-century legends of the Tonkawa, Apache and Comanche tribes, who believed it was imbued with mystical powers.

West

To an outsider, West doesn’t seem like much. With only about 3,000 residents and no major tourist attractions to speak of, why would visitors go out of their way to see it?

But ask any born-and-raised Texan about the town of West, and you’ll surely hear the reason – kolaches.

In the 1880s, a wave of Czech immigrants settled in this tiny pocket of north-central Texas, and brought with them the delicious buttery goodness of recipes from the old land. In the 1960s, Interstate 35 put West on the map as a highway stop, and Lone Star travelers first got a taste of Czech gold.

Today, The Czech Stop is genuinely a Texas institution. Travelers from all walks of life meet at the highway intersection connecting Dallas, Waco, Austin, and San Antonio for a beloved one-of-a-kind snack. The bakery offers all kinds of Eastern European inspired treats, including its infamous kolaches.

Adapted from the Czech koláč, a puffy dough pastry traditionally made with fruit jam or poppy seeds, today’s most popular kolaches are cream cheese flavored. Since local Texas tastes lean heavily on the carnivorous side, jalapeńo sausage klobasnek and “hot chubby” sausage and cheese rolls are crowd favorites.

The city of West has also been recognized as the “Czech Heritage Capital of Texas,” and hosts an annual Westfest celebrating Czech culture and traditions. Visitors can learn more at the History of West Museum.

For spending the night or taking a multi-day trip, it’s best to make it an extended stop on an epic road trip or combine it with a trip to nearby Waco. This university town is home to unique historic inns, modern hotels, quirky coffee shops, and plenty of southern comfort food.

A new $500 million mega golf resort is set to open in Texas next year – which is currently the largest resort under construction in the United States of America.

The resort will go by the name of Omni PGA Frisco Resort, and is owned by Omni Hotels and Resorts – who currently operate hotels and resorts throughout 23 U.S. states – as well two properties in the Canadian cities of Montreal and Toronto, and one in Cancun, Mexico.

And, there is no doubt that once complete – and open for business – Omni PGA Frisco Resort is going to instantly become one of the top hotels and resorts in and around the city of Dallas, Texas.

So, with their new – and highly anticipated – mega golf resort due to open in Texas in the Spring of 2023, here is what we know so far about the latest addition to the portfolio of Omni Hotels and Resorts.

As already mentioned, the new resort is sure to impress those who have a keen interest in playing golf – as Omni PGA Frisco Resort is to feature three golf courses on site, including two 18-hole championship courses and a shorter 10-hole course, as well as a golf performance center.

This basically means that visitors will have the opportunity to play 46 different holes of golf during their stay at the resort – which have all been designed by golf course designers, Beau Welling and Gil Hanse.
