These Are The Top 5 Destinations For First-Time Solo Female Travelers Right Now

    [ad_1]

    Last Updated

Are you planning your first trip as a solo female traveler?

Traveling on your own for the first time can be a challenging experience. As a solo female traveler, you’re probably concerned about safety and want to choose a destination where you can feel safe and confident traveling while still having a good time.

I’ve traveled to over 50 countries as a solo female traveler, including many countries that people perceive as “dangerous” — and while I wouldn’t necessarily recommend jumping into the deep end with a challenging destination on your first solo trip, here are five places I DO recommend for first-time solo travelers.

Young Female Tourist In London, United Kingdom

Choosing Your First Solo Trip Destination

Some important factors to consider when choosing the destination for your first solo trip are:

    • Safety: Obviously, safety is top of mind for solo female travelers. While it’s possible to travel safely in many countries around the world, choosing a country that ranks very high for safety is a good idea for a first solo trip.
    • Ease of travel: For a first solo trip, it’s smart to choose a destination that isn’t challenging to visit. For Americans, this could mean a country where English is the main language (or widely spoken in tourist areas) and where highly developed tourism infrastructure already exists.
    • Things to do: Finally, the best destinations for first-time solo female travelers are ones where there are plenty of things to do for every type of traveler.

Here are five of the best destinations to consider for a first-time solo female traveler:

    Woman in New Zealand

    1. United Kingdom

One of the best destinations for first-time solo female travelers is the United Kingdom. Taking a trip “across the pond” is a great way for American travelers to ease themselves into international travel, especially solo.

The UK is very safe, there won’t be much of a culture shock, and there are tons of things to do for every type of traveler. London is one of the top international travel destinations in the world, but don’t overlook these underrated cities in the UK either.

A new study rated Edinburgh, Scotland one of the safest cities in Europe for solo female travelers, making it a great option for your first solo trip.

    2. Iceland

Iceland was recently ranked as the safest country in the world, according to the 2022 Global Peace Index. This makes it a great worry-free destination for solo female travelers.

It’s also chock-full of things to do, like hiking to waterfalls, seeing geysers and glaciers, and soaking in thermal hot springs. English is widely spoken in Iceland, and the small country has a great tourism infrastructure that’s easy to navigate.

    3. Croatia

Croatia is one of the best destinations for a budget-friendly solo female trip. Thanks to its well-developed tourism infrastructure, you can feel confident navigating Croatia on your own. It’s also one of the safest countries in Europe.

Beautiful beaches, historic towns, and stunning national parks are just a few of the reasons Croatia is the most sought-after destination in Europe.

    4. Mexico

At one time, Mexico would not have been on the list for solo female travel destinations, but in recent years, Mexico has become safer than ever.

Although the U.S. still has travel warnings in place for Mexico, Americans continue flocking to Mexico, and it’s actually much safer than you might think.

Mexico is a great introduction to Latin America for solo female travelers thanks to its highly-developed tourism infrastructure, popularity with American travelers, and proximity to the U.S.

    5. New Zealand

Finally, New Zealand is a great destination for first-time solo female travelers. It’s located halfway across the world for American travelers, but it’s an easy adjustment since the primary language spoken is English.

New Zealand is incredibly safe (it’s ranked number two after Iceland in the Global Peace Index) and one of the most beautiful countries in the world.

  • 6 Reasons Why This Nordic Country Has Become A Top Summer Destination For Travelers

6 Reasons Why This Nordic Country Has Become A Top Summer Destination For Travelers

    [ad_1]

    Share The Article

    Last Updated

Iceland has impressive landscapes, volcanoes, waterfalls, glaciers, geothermal pools, beaches, fjords, and one of the most magnificent natural shows on earth — the northern lights.

This Nordic island country wasn’t so popular a few years ago, but now it has been on every globetrotter’s mind.

    Seljalandsfoss waterfall in Iceland

Many have realized that besides its natural beauty, this place’s history, people, and fascinating culture are worth discovering.

And it’s the perfect summer destination for those who want to avoid summer heat!

Iceland’s tourism boom was recently discussed in a New York Times interview with former U.N. tourism ambassador and now Iceland’s first lady, Eliza Reid.

Reid shared wise advice for travelers interested in visiting Iceland and revealed the “secret” of the best way to get to know locals: in a hot tub or at a geothermal pool

Couple enjoying hot springs in Iceland

Here are 6 reasons why Iceland has become a top summer destination in 2023:

    1) Amazing Outdoor Experiences

Nature lovers fall crazy in love with this country for its jaw-dropping landscapes and relaxing attractions — and we all want to feel at ease and enjoy beautiful spaces in 2023.

Iceland has one of the world’s best tourist attractions, The Blue Lagoon. This impressive geothermal spa has hot mineral-rich waters, and many say it even has healing properties.

Top 5 Travel Insurance Plans For 2023 Starting At $10 Per Week

Amazing view of black sand dunes at Cape Stokksnes with Vestrahorn (Batman Mountain) in the background

Travelers can relax, heal, and get the most amazing photos.

Quick warning: Even though it can be tempting to get the most incredible pictures in the world next to active volcanoes or a cool video of the sneaker waves at the beach, Reid also warned travelers that nature in Iceland can be very powerful and visitors should always be careful and use common sense.

    2) More Direct Flights And Great Airport Facilities

One of the reasons why travelers didn’t visit this Nordic island before was because of the lack of direct flights.

Now low-cost airlines like Icelandic airline fly from over 10 cities in the United States and offer travelers affordable prices.

    Passengers walking in Reykjavík airport

Another advantage in Iceland is related to services and infrastructure.

Keflavík International Airport in Reykjavík was recently recognized as one of the best airports in Europe in its category—airports welcoming 5 to 15 million passengers per year— for its service quality.

    3) Year-Round Travel Opportunities

Even though summer is one the best seasons to visit this country as it has pleasant weather and lots of daylight—especially during the midnight Sun season— to explore the most amazing destinations, Iceland offers visitors top experiences throughout the year.

Village in Iceland under the beautiful northern lights

During winter, travelers have more opportunities to see the breathtaking northern lights.

Since nature is its main attraction, and nature is constantly changing, visitors can get different experiences every time they visit.

    4) Geothermal Pools And Hot Tubs As Social Activities

As Reid explained, soaking up in geothermal pools or relaxing in hot tubs is not just a personal experience but also a social activity.

Having a wellness moment in clean and pure waters and also connecting to local culture? Sounds like a plan! And yes, Iceland ranks as one of the best spa and wellness getaways.

Visiting and getting to know the different pools is also a way to meet Icelanders and learn about their culture and lifestyle.

It’s also an affordable experience and each place has its own atmosphere and style.

    5) More Restaurants, Cafes, And Tourist Activities

Since tourism has boomed, there are now more accommodation options, restaurants, cafes, and activities for visitors.

Iceland also offers environmentally friendly tourism experiences, so travelers can explore guilt-free in one of the safest destinations in the world and also learn about responsible tourism.

    Aerial View Of Reykjavik, Iceland

In the capital, Reykjavík, travelers will find great museums, vibrant nightlife, and many restaurants and bars to choose from.

    6) Delicious Local Cuisine

Have you heard about the Hákarl or the Plokkfiskur? Maybe you should check it out, or, even better, maybe you should travel to Iceland to taste it.

Icelandic cuisine is not as popular as Italian or French cuisine but is rich in flavor and creativity.

a waitress takes a food order from two people sitting at a table

Travelers enjoy tasting local dishes like pylsur—Reykjavik’s Hot Dog—, the traditional kæstur Hákarl—fermented shark—, and the traditional fish stew, the Plokkfiskur.

The Caribbean is not a region known for being budget-friendly, but there are actually many places where you can have a cheap vacation in an island paradise.

Although some destinations in the Caribbean are undeniably expensive (think St. Barts, St. Lucia, or the Cayman Islands), there are also a number of more affordable places to go.

According to a recent U.S. News ranking, these are the best destinations in the Caribbean for a cheap vacation.

    Woman on Beach

    1. Curacao

Curacao is located in the ABC Islands in the Southern Caribbean, along with Aruba and Bonaire. This Dutch island territory is known for having great beaches, excellent scuba diving, and colorful coral reefs.

If you’re looking for an affordable vacation in the Caribbean, Curacao is one of the top places to go.

Although flights from the U.S. can be a little pricier since there aren’t as many options to choose from, your on-the-ground costs will work out to be cheaper overall. Hotels, food, and activities in Curacao are all cheaper than many other Caribbean islands, including nearby Aruba.

    2. Martinique

Another affordable Caribbean destination is Martinique. This is a great spot for adventurous travelers who are looking for an off-the-beaten-path Caribbean vacation.

Martinique, which is an overseas territory of France, is known for its rugged natural beauty. In addition to having great beaches, it’s also a popular destination for hiking.

The island possesses a unique blend of French and West Indian influences, giving it a strong cultural heritage that is on display in the lively capital Fort-de-France.

    3. Trinidad & Tobago

One of the cheapest Caribbean destinations is Trinidad & Tobago. This Caribbean nation located in the Southern Caribbean is made up of two islands, the larger, bustling Trinidad and the smaller, quieter Tobago.

Trinidad is famous for hosting a boisterous Carnival celebration every year in the capital Port of Spain. The country is also the birthplace of various music styles, including calypso and soca.

If you’re looking for a more affordable Caribbean vacation, you can find great deals on hotels and activities in Trinidad and Tobago.

    4. Jamaica

Despite a recent surge in crime and elevated travel warnings from the U.S. State Department, Jamaica remains as popular as ever among American travelers.

This affordable Caribbean island is so popular because of its beautiful beaches, laid-back atmosphere, and ease of travel. With dozens of all-inclusive resorts to choose from and tons of cheap flights from the United States, Jamaica is easily one of the best places for a cheap Caribbean vacation.

There are a number of all-inclusive resorts on the island for less than $300 a night, even during the peak winter season, making this a very budget-friendly travel destination.

    5. U.S. Virgin Islands

The U.S. Virgin Islands can be a surprisingly affordable destination for American travelers. There are so many reasons to visit the U.S. Virgin Islands, including beautiful beaches, great weather, and many things to do.

These islands are a territory of the United States, meaning American travelers do not need a passport to visit.

The three main islands are St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix. St. Thomas is the largest island and the most affordable to stay on, while St. John is worth a day trip visit due to its gorgeous beaches in the Virgin Islands National Park.

  • These Are The Top 3 Off Path Alternatives To Dubai That Offer World Class Luxury

These Are The Top 3 Off Path Alternatives To Dubai That Offer World Class Luxury

    [ad_1]

    Share The Article

    Last Updated

There’s no doubt that Dubai is one of the top tourist destinations in the world. In fact, the city won the Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice Award for the second time in a row this year.

But with overwhelming crowds of over 14 million visitors per year and ever-rising prices topping the global daily tourist spend charts, some travelers are looking for alternatives.

So why don’t tourists try someplace else? Well, Dubai really knows how to do luxury, and everybody knows it. With over 150 five-star properties with excellent reputations, it comes as no surprise that travelers think first of Dubai when looking for a taste of the good life.

However, there are a few elite gems in the Gulf giving Dubai a run for its money.

For those willing to get off the beaten path, here are the top three alternatives to Dubai that offer world-class luxury.

    Jumeirah Dubai

    1. Muscat, Oman

Prices in Muscat are about 40% lower than in Dubai while still maintaining top-quality luxury and world-class hospitality.

Top award-winning five-star properties in Muscat include:

    • The Chedi Hotel – Palm trees line a sleek pool with ocean views, while minimalist clean lines blend seamlessly with Omani architecture in a true oasis of understated opulence.
    • Kempinski Hotel – This splashy beach resort can do no wrong but can give the properties of Dubai’s Palm Jumeirah a run for their money.
    • Al-Bustan Palace, A Ritz-Carlton Hotel – If the record-breaking crystal chandeliers and fascinating history of the building weren’t enough, guests will be impressed by the peerless quality of meticulously curated experiences throughout their stay.
    • Shangri-La Al Husn – This adult-only clifftop retreat on the bay of Barr Al Jissah recalls Arabian royalty in its indulgent brand of luxury.

But the luxury doesn’t stop at accommodation. Oman Air is ranked in the top 10 business classes and first classes to fly in the world and was awarded the most comfortable seat in the Middle East.

Like Dubai, Muscat airport is a convenient (albeit smaller) hub connecting flights between Europe, Asia, and Africa, featuring a business class lounge ranked in the top ten globally.

    luxury hotel in oman

Muscat doesn’t have anything like the Burj Khalifa, but it has something that ultra-developed Dubai is missing: the balance between old and new.

While modern world-class hospitality is still the name of the game, Oman is absolutely steeped in a depth of tradition missing from other luxury destinations. Maintaining its organic character in its architecture, hospitality, and way of life sets this Gulf nation apart from the competition.

The Sultanate is predominantly Ibāḍī, practicing a branch of Islam that is less conservative in social practice than many neighboring societies.

Muscat’s social climate is relatively relaxed and tolerant of other cultures. Tourists can enjoy alcoholic drinks on their trip and have peace of mind knowing that Oman is widely regarded as the most female-friendly country in the region.

Top 5 Travel Insurance Plans For 2023 Starting At $10 Per Week

    Muscat Oman by night

While the extraordinary service and striking architecture of Muscat’s luxury properties might tempt you to never leave your hotel, Oman’s true gems lie in the excursions.

No trip to Muscat would be complete without marveling at Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, wandering around the Royal Opera House, or shopping in the vibrant maze of Muttrah Souk. Just an hour southwest of Muscat lies the ancient capital of Nizwa, surreally frozen in time yet welcoming to visitors.

Venture an hour and a half east along Oman’s coastline, and you’ll be blown away by the natural beauty and refreshing waters of Wadi Shab, Wadi Bani Khalid, and Wadi Tiwi. The nature here also knows a little something about true luxury.

Wadi Bani Khalid beautiful swimming hole in Oman

    2. AlUla, Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia’s new tourist magnet AlUla offers a unique brand of exclusive luxury. The Kingdom describes this desert retreat as “a living museum of preserved tombs, sandstone outcrops, historic dwellings… that hold 200,000 years of largely unexplored human history.”

Detox and reconnection with nature are AlUla’s specialties. (Alcohol is prohibited in Saudi Arabia, so you might as well go all in on the cleanse.)

From ancestral Bedouin healing practices to trendy oil therapies and yoga practices, the wellness centers at AlUla’s top resorts are fully equipped for desert rejuvenation.

The Elephant Rock - Ola - Saudi Arabia

Luxury properties in AlUla offer something for every kind of traveler. Award-winning Habitas Alula is nothing short of other-worldly. Self-proclaimed “luxury for the soul,” this resort hosts 96 five-star villas, each with unique interiors, scattered across the desert sand alongside a miraculous swimming pool and yoga deck.

Focused on seamless integration with the show-stopping scenery, Banyan Tree Alula features 47 sand-colored tented villas and an infinity pool filling an organic space between towering Martian cliffs.

camels in alula saudi arabia desert

    3. Doha, Qatar

Qatar is quickly making a name for itself as a leading luxury destination, starting with its capital city of Doha.

Banana Island Resort by Anantara offers a private island stay with uber-Instagrammable floating meals served in the pool. Private villas here sit on stilts above crystal clear waters and come complete with a private butler, boat, and pool.

Zulal Wellness Resort by Chiva-Som provides a secluded oasis where desert meets nature and traditional Qatari architecture meets modern clean lines. Just an hour from the capital, this five-star property is the first luxury wellness destination in the region to focus on Traditional Arabic and Islamic Medicine.

    Other top resorts include:

    • Mandarin Oriental, Doha – Home to opulent pearl-based spa treatments, twin rooftop pools, and a restaurant specializing in Italian white truffle
    • Mondrian Doha – An award-winning art hotel in the West Bay with a bustling social scene and creative interiors at every turn
    • Marsa Malaz Kempinski – A European-inspired beach resort on an artificial island featuring 281 ocean-view rooms and 7 restaurants, a popular choice with families
Qatari Police Officers Mounted On Horse And Wearing Traditional Attire In Historical Doha, Qatar

For excessive luxury, look no further than The Pearl-Qatar, a man-made peninsula packed with the finest dining, trendiest cafes, and most lavish hotels in the country, cementing Doha’s place as a worthy rival to Dubai.

From Nobu to Morimoto to Hakkasan, truly world-class Asian-inspired fine dining is one of the many elite tricks Doha does best.

Travelers can revel in top-tier private excursions like helicopter rides, luxury yacht charters, 24-carat gold spa treatments, or personal stylist-led shopping trips to the designer wing of the Mall of Doha.

    skyscraper in doha

When it’s time to fly home, don’t be too disappointed. Qatar Airways has been voted the World’s Best Airline seven years in a row, not to mention the best airline in the Middle East and one of the top business classes in the world.

It’s safe to say you’ll leave behind your luxury vacation in continued comfort with outstanding service.

When it comes to Europe there are plenty options to visit, but Americans have a great interest in the United Kingdom.

Besides the English language advantage, this European region has amazing cities with multiple attractions and rich culture that travelers enjoy exploring.

Birmingham canals with boats during sunsets

According to recent data shared by the Office of National Statistics (ONS), 4.56 million U.S. citizens visited the United Kingdom in 2022 leading the ranking as the most popular tourists and surpassing pre-pandemic levels.

The report also highlighted the preferred destinations for foreign visitors last year and included trendy destinations for Americans.

These are the top 4 destinations in the United Kingdom:

    1) London

London is still the star in the United Kingdom, but travelers are beginning to explore other destinations, and tourism in this city hasn’t yet surpassed pre-pandemic levels according to the official information.

However, Americans adore this fascinating city. Walking by Buckingham Palace, admiring the stunning panoramic views from the London Eye, visiting amazing museums, seeing the London Bridge in action, riding a boat on the River Thames, and getting a selfie next to the Big Ben remain on American traveler’s bucket list when visiting the U.K.

Since summer is expected to be very busy this summer, travelers are opting for off-the-beaten-path activities in London like strolling through Little Venice, visiting Richmond, and going for a picnic on Primrose Hill.

    2) Edinburgh

Yes, Americans are falling in love with Scotland and Edinburgh is the protagonist! According to recent data, 75% of U.S. visitors include this city as their main destination when visiting this country.

And Edinburgh has so much to offer! Many travelers are amazed by the impressive architecture and interesting history. Edinburgh Castle is just one example. Walking along the fascinating Royal Mile and comparing the Old Town and the New Town are other ways to truly experience this city.

There are also multiple festivals and unique experiences—like climbing Arthur’s seat— that make visitors want to come back. This summer great events take place here, like the Edinburgh international festival, and travelers have great opportunities to create amazing memories.

    3) Manchester

This city is also locals’ favorite destination. A new report revealed that Europeans’ favorite destination in 2023 is Manchester

American travelers visiting Manchester this summer will get to enjoy the city next to locals and get the most out of its culture and unique ambiance.

From music lovers to sports lovers to families, Manchester has great activities for all.

Sportif travelers usually add  Etihad Stadium or Old Trafford to their must-visit list. The home of European football in the United Kingdom has the best museums, bars, tours, and experiences for soccer fans.

Music lovers try to attend concerts at the impressive venue O2 Ritz Manchester or the Manchester Arena. This summer, the  Manchester Jazz Festival , and the Manchester International Festival are expected to offer the most extraordinary days for melomaniacs.

And, of course, all kinds of travelers can have a great time in this city with its special architecture, museums, parks, and lovely neighborhoods.

    4) Birmingham

Also in England, Birmingham has been gaining popularity among foreign visitors as it has been charming them with its amazing canals, historic buildings, and modern structures.

Birmingham has more miles of canals than Venice—not more canals, as it has been falsely spread— built in the 1700s and 1800s, and now visitors can take a fun boat tour or just walk along its paths and enjoy its beautiful views.

Its fascinating industrial history and spectacular museums can take travelers through important historic events and enrich the travel experience. There are also special attractions like a fun chocolate day at Cadbury World, one of the families’ top attractions in the UK.

After Birmingham, other cities like Liverpool, Glasgow, Bristol, Cambridge, Oxford, and Brighton and Hove also made it into the top ten. While most foreign travelers remain in England (82%) others also enjoy exploring Scotland and Wales for leisure during their vacations.

These Are The Top 5 Reasons To Avoid Airbnb On Your Next Trip

More than a billion travelers have used Airbnb to find unique travel experiences since its founding in 2008. With over half a million guests per year visiting more than 220 countries at all different price points, Airbnb has effectively become the only real option for travel rentals.

woman handing man keys at airbnb

Unfortunately, in the absence of legitimate global competition for hotel alternatives, Airbnb has become more problematic as it continues to grow.

Both guests and hosts are getting fed up while the challenges only grow in step with the platform’s rise to ubiquity.

While Airbnb has taken some steps to address common pain points, such as giving guests the option to see all fees upfront while searching, other more systemic hurdles will be nearly impossible to surmount. These are features – not bugs – of the Airbnb system.

Here are the top five reasons you might want to avoid Airbnb on your next trip:

airbnb key in front of mountain

    Missing or Mismatched Amenities

Vacation time is a more precious commodity than dollars, euros, or pesos for most travelers. With the majority of Americans taking less than two weeks of vacation per year, it’s safe to say that every traveler wants to squeeze every last drop out of their travel days.

Unfortunately, the inconsistency of amenities across Airbnb properties means less time to enjoy your destination.

Sometimes absolute basics like toilet paper or soap may be missing from your accommodation, turning a chunk of your precious holiday relaxation time into a stressful weekend-rush-hour supermarket run, possibly in a foreign language or far from your accommodation.

More importantly, you never really know what you’re getting until you read pages of descriptions and house manuals, which are all inconveniently located in different sections of the web listing (and sometimes nonsensically auto-translated, just for giggles).

There’s simply too much variety to avoid mismatched expectations or miscommunications.

Hosts Can’t Compete With A Front Desk

There are many genuinely outstanding hosts on Airbnb who deserve serious commendation for their hospitality and love of their hometown. However, like amenities, Airbnb hosts’ hospitality and responsiveness are pretty luck-of-the-draw.

Even when staying with a superhost, there’s often (understandably) a significant delay in getting problems resolved or getting critical information. From days-long power outages in sweltering heat to flooded bathrooms, there are just some things that make a traveler long for a hotel’s front desk.

These types of issues can quickly deteriorate from inconveniences into genuine health and safety issues. When hosts are not available or able to resolve the problems, Airbnb support should be able to fill in the gaps, right?

    …Wrong.

Poor Customer Support Means No Peace Of Mind

A recent report analyzing over 125,000 Airbnb complaints on Twitter found that 72% of travelers’ issues with Airbnb were related to poor customer service.

    Top issues included:

    • Limited support in emergencies
    • Unreachable or very rude, hang-ups
    • Denies refunds or full refunds unfairly
    • Promises but never delivers
    • Provides wrong answer

Some guests accuse Airbnb Support of prioritizing net profits and maintaining its image rather than helping or protecting guests.

In especially terrifying cases, Airbnb’s shadowy ‘safety team’ in particular seems to focus less on preventative changes to keep travelers safe and more on paying millions in hush money when the lack of host accountability and standardized safety practices results in break-ins and violent assaults, which predominantly affect female guests.

A Not-So-Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood

What used to be an off path taste of local life seems to have morphed into more of a corporate machine. Foreign house flippers and sterile management companies have replaced the down home hospitality and quirky immersive experiences of early Airbnb.

Airbnb properties’ neighbors know this harsh reality better than anyone – and they’re pushing back.

One study in Hawaii revealed some of the ways short-term vacation rentals like Airbnb erode the character and culture of a neighborhood. “This thing is changing the sense of place of the neighborhood. It’s changing the feel of it, with almost a revolving door of strangers,” one resident said.

Studies from Boston also show that short-term rentals disrupting the organic organization of a neighborhood can also have detrimental effects on social ties and raise crime rates

A concentration of Airbnbs within a neighborhood can bring issues such as:

    • Cultural dilution
    • Noise pollution
    • Parties
    • Congested parking
    • Property damage
    • Rising rents
    • Displaced residents
    woman sitting in messy airbnb

Because short-term rentals like Airbnb can make 2-8 times more money than a long term lease, many long-term residents are being kicked out of multigenerational family homes all over the world to make room for tourists’ next vacation pads.

This displacement can be seen most severely when wealthier Western tourists flock to cheaper countries with lower local wages for their cheap cost of living; for example, Mexico City

The average wages in the Mexican capital are $3,800 per year. After last year’s agreement, where the Mexico City government welcomed Airbnb with open arms, a typical 2-bedroom apartment goes for more in monthly rent ($1,500 – 4,000) than many local annual salaries.

A tourist calls their Airbnb price an amazing deal. A digital nomad calls it geoarbitrage. Locals and experts call it global gentrification.

Palacio Bellas Artes Mexico City at sunset

    Is Your Holiday Rental Illegal?

Unbeknownst to most travelers, many of the Airbnb listings shown in their search results are in fact illegal.

Some are operating in cities or countries where Airbnb is illegal or heavily restricted. Others haven’t followed proper protocols for their area, such as being a registered real estate or tourism business or renting for the legal minimum or maximum periods of time.

Some hosts even put guests in the uncomfortable position of lying for them in order to skirt these regulations.

Airbnb is banned or severely restricted in these top destinations:

    • New York City, NY
    • San Francisco, CA
    • Amsterdam, The Netherlands
    • Paris, France
    • Barcelona, Spain
    • Singapore
    • Thailand
    • Japan
    traditional japanese ryokan guesthouse

Airbnb began as a brilliant way to travel more like a local. Now, it’s become a necessary evil that travelers just can’t seem to shake.

No need to be discouraged by the lack of well-known alternatives to Airbnb. While the pickings are a bit slim, here are a few trip-worthy ideas for those willing to venture off path:

    • Alberghi Diffusi – In Italy and around the world, you can stay in villages that have transformed into “scattered hotels” focused on reviving local historical and cultural gems.
    • Ryokan and Minshuku – These traditional guest houses in Japan are usually family-run and passed down through generations. Travelers can fully immerse themselves in Japanese culture, from tatami rooms to hot spring baths.
    • Fairbnb – This European co-op gives 50% of the tourists’ payment to funding local community projects while allowing hosts to list their homes for free.
    • Home Exchange – Just like the name implies, you can swap homes with someone from another country. Talk about fair trade!
    • Locally Owned B&Bs, Guesthouses, and Boutique Hotels – Check out 10 great options from The Guardian here, or search on your own using filters on Booking, Google, or elsewhere.

Your vacation time gives you a chance to see a part of the world that is very different from your own. There’s never been a better time to hit the road and start exploring. But where should you go?

International tourism has already reached 80% of its pre-pandemic levels this year, and demand for summer travel continues to be high.

    aerial view of castle

If you have a dream vacation in mind, you should book it before availability is drastically reduced. Not sure where to visit? Here is some inspiration.

Experts from CNN have chosen these as four of the top travel destinations in the world right now:

    Vilnius, Lithuania

Vilnius is the capital of Lithuania, and the entire center of this spectacular city has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site.

    Cathedral square in Vilnius, Lithuania

It boasts Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque buildings and still maintains its medieval street plan. There’s nothing better than getting lost in its meandering streets and exploring the hidden, unexpected gems that you find.

Visitors can explore the beautifully restored Palace of the Grand Dukes and the gothic St Anne’s Church.

Its old-world charm is one of the main draws of a trip to Vilnius, but there are other attractions too.

View from the gates on the beautiful Francis of Assisi gothic church in the old town of Vilnius city, Lithuania.

Travelers can shop for traditional crafts, such as Baltic amber jewelry and hand-embroidered linens. The flavors of Lithuania are exceptional, with plenty of seasonal produce incorporated into the dishes.

The city’s Soviet past is also fascinating, and the Museum of Genocide Victims is a stark, shocking insight into the recent history of Vilnius.

    Manaus, Brazil

Manaus is a vibrant and fun destination in the heart of Brazil, brimming with life and color. Located in the heart of the Amazon rainforest, this unique destination is every bit as exciting as you would expect.

Sunset over the Amazon rainforest in Manaus, Brazil.

The pink opera house, constructed in 1896, is a cultural hub in the city. You’ll also find noisy and chaotic street markets here that are well worth exploring.

Outside of the city center, visitors here can enjoy long hikes through the jungle, embracing the natural rainforest environment and going off-grid.

Manaus Theater In Manaus, Capital OF The Amazon State In Northwestern Brazil, South America

The opportunity to share space with jaguars, pumas and giant armadillos is a true adrenaline rush.

Perhaps one of the best things about visiting Manaus is the people who live here. The locals are welcoming and friendly to visitors and are always happy to chat or offer help when needed.

    Thessaloniki, Greece

Thessaloniki is a port city in Greece, located on the Thermaic Gulf of the Aegean Sea.

History buffs will love it here because of the evidence of Roman, Ottoman, and Byzantine history that still remains in the area.

An exterior view of Saint Paul cathedral, Thessaloniki, Greece

The ruins of the Roman Emperor Galerius’ palace are particularly worthy of exploration. And the good news is Thessaloniki is an easy city to explore on foot, making getting around incredibly simple.

Although the city is mostly famous for its historical attractions and active nightlife scene, thanks to the many bars and cafes, those looking for a more relaxing vacation will also find some beautiful beaches surrounding the town.

While Thessaloniki is an incredible vacation destination in its own right, it also makes a great base for exploring the surrounding region.

If you want to spend your summer in Greece, then there is no better place to be.

    Bogota, Colombia

Though it is not one of the most popular Colombian vacation destinations, Bogota is the capital of Colombia, and the city combines modern elements with traditional Colombian heritage.

The first thing you’ll notice about Bogota is the color. Everywhere is incredibly vibrant. Even walls and buildings are a riot of color because graffiti is legal in the country, meaning that creative street art is actively encouraged at every corner.

A row of colorful houses in Bogota

Bogota also has a very pleasant climate: because it is located at such a high altitude, it doesn’t get the same balmy heat that other parts of the country do.

Whether you’re looking for history and heritage, arts and gastronomy, or simply want to relax and soak up a completely different culture, Bogota has it all.

With many Americans gearing up to travel this summer, it’s time to start thinking about which places will be the busiest.

More and more people are reporting that they are planning on traveling closer to home this year to both save on costs and also avoid the anticipated headaches that summer 2023 air travel will bring.

Woman sitting looking at summer mountain view. Rocky Mountain National Park, Estes Park, Colorado, USA.

Luckily America has no shortage of places to visit without leaving the country, and to give you some ideas, the popular travel planning website Trips To Discover has ranked the best place to visit in each state this summer.

The list includes an ideal summer destination from each of the 50 states, meaning you can discover a new place without having to go too far, thus avoiding all the airport traffic, delays, lost baggage, and all the other stressors that come with flying nowadays.

Red covered bridge in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.

The destinations were chosen based on a variety of factors, including the summer weather quality, the number of attractions on offer for the whole family, and the ease of access to nature and outdoor activities.

While some of the locations on the list are ones that are well-known, there are others that are more off the beaten track. Including all six of the regions within the United States, here are 6 destinations that offer a unique getaway for a summer trip.

    New England: Conway, New Hampshire

If you venture into New England’s White Mountains, you can find Conway tucked into the rolling green hills.

While the area is worth a visit in any season, a trip here in the summer allows you to go tubing down the Saco River and swim in the area’s lakes.

The downtown is delightful, and you can take a ride on the Conway Scenic Railroad’s old-fashioned trains to take in the views. Shopping, dining, and outdoor attractions also win people over who visit.

    Mid-Atlantic: Saranac Lake, New York

The Adirondack Mountains in Northern New York are one of the Mid-Atlantic region’s best places to get away and into some epic nature.

Only about four hours from Manhattan and two hours south of Montreal, this natural paradise isn’t actually as hard to reach as you might expect.  The Adirondack area is home to around 3,000 lakes, with the most famous being Lake Placid.

While Lake Placid is a great destination, it tends to get crowded in the prime months, so keep going about 10 miles northwest until you find the serene Saranac Lake. With fewer crowds, lower prices, and a more local feel, this is the unique place to get away this summer that you have been thinking of.

    The South:  Beaufort, South Carolina

You can find the charming and historic waterfront town of Beaufort located only about an hour and a half’s drive from the lovely Charleston, making it a perfect day or overnight trip.

If some areas of this town might look familiar, it’s because much of Forrest Gump was filmed here.

With moss-draped trees and huge historic houses lining the streets, this is a gem tucked away for those who are lucky enough to discover.

Spend your time wandering along the streets, taking in the antebellum architecture, visiting the Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park, and sampling some fantastic Low-country cuisine.

    The Midwest: Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin

If you are looking for a unique place to visit in the American midwest, Wisconsin Dells is worth consideration.

Known as the “Waterpark Capital of the World”, Wisconsin Dells has more waterparks per capita than any other place in the world.

While the waterparks are a huge draw here, making this a great destination for families, there are other reasons to visit this unique destination as well. The rock formations jutting along the river make for some epic scenery, and duck tours, horse rides, canyon, and river walks are all options to help you navigate this interesting terrain.

    The Southwest: Taos, New Mexico

As the only Native American community to be designated both a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a National Historic Landmark, Taos Pueblo is absolutely worth a visit in the Southwest.

Nicknamed “The Soul Of The Southwest”, Taos charms visitors with its many galleries, amazing rafting, local cultures, and of course, the landmark sights.

A visit here can let you explore the spiritual traditions of the region and the fine arts and unique culture.

    The West: Estes Park, Colorado

Colorado’s Rocky Mountain National Park is a fantastic destination to visit, and the bonus is that you can spend your downtime in the small mountain town of Estes Park.

Enjoy your visit as you spend the days wandering downtown, fly-fishing, spotting the vast wildlife, hiking, and many other activities.

Wander the charming downtown streets and the picturesque riverwalk, and use this town as your base for exploring the National Park and surrounding area.
