Omio’s study looked at public transportation links, taxis, and shared mobility transport like shared bikes, scooters, and e-scooters available in 30 European cities. They also took into consideration the price of each mode of transportation to come up with a comprehensive ranking of cities with the most convenient and best-value urban transportation options. These are the top 5 European cities from the study that are the easiest to get around and have good public transportation.

1. Zurich, Switzerland

Switzerland’s largest city topped the ranking in this study. Zurich has plenty of public transportation options, with 15 tram lines, 4 commuter train lines, and 67 bus routes to whisk locals and tourists across the city. The network is efficient and extensive, making travel within Zurich a breeze. The Zurich Airport is also well connected to public transport, making the need for a car obsolete for anyone staying within the city. Trains from the airport to the city’s main train station come every 10 minutes and take just 15 minutes.

2. Berlin, Germany

Berlin is a world leader when it comes to shared transportation. Germany’s capital city has tons of options when it comes to sharing programs for e-scooter, bikes, and motorscooters. According to Omio’s study, there are 16 different companies to choose from! Visitors traveling short distances within the city can choose from companies like Lime, Bird, or Tier. Anyone wanting to use a shared bike or scooter can download the relevant company’s app to locate, pay for, and unlock a bike or scooter. Just be sure not to ride on sidewalks or in pedestrian zones, or you will face a fine.

3. Vienna, Austria

The Austrian capital of Vienna is not only well-connected, but it also has affordable transportation choices. Taxi rates are reasonable, as are the shared mobility options. With 2 bike share providers, 7 e-scooter, and 3 motor scooter companies to choose from, getting around without a car is easy. Tickets on the city’s public transportation cost just $2.50, and the average price of a shared motor scooter is just $5.50.

4. Milan, Italy

Milan is a good option for travelers who are looking to get around on the cheap. The city’s Metro offers a tourist pass allowing visitors to explore Milan using the metro, tram, or bus system for an affordable price. A three-day MilanoCard is $20 and includes $5 towards a taxi and a free coffee. The Milano Card also provides discounts at some of the city’s top attractions and can be customized to also include airport transfers at an additional cost.

5. Paris, France

Visitors to Paris will be able to see all of the city’s top sights via the intricate RATP system, which includes an efficient metro and an extensive bus network. 1. Tokyo

Japan finally reopened for tourism on October 11 after over two and a half years of forced closures.

In order to enter the country, travelers will either need three doses of a Covid vaccine or take a pre-arrival Covid test. While masks are not legally required in Japan, the majority of the population still voluntarily wears them in almost all circumstances.

However, travelers who don’t mind these restrictions will be able to explore the vibrant city of Tokyo and all it has to offer once again.

Bali has reopened for vaccinated travelers only after extremely strict closures and entry requirements for over two years.

Despite the lingering restrictions, travelers have been eager to explore the vibrant city of Rio De Janeiro, which will once again host one of the best Carnival celebrations in the world in February 2023.

6. Málaga

Málaga, Spain is known for being one of the best destinations in southern Spain, with great beaches and nightlife, as well as food and culture.

Although it gets extremely crowded in the summer months, Málaga is a great place to visit any time of year. It’s a popular winter sun destination in Europe, and although it might be a little too cold for a dip in the ocean, you can certainly enjoy sunbathing and pleasant weather here, even during the winter and spring.

The rising star of the Pacific, Los Cabos is having a truly phenomenal year. Besides leading Latin America’s luxury travel segment, and positioning itself as the second most visited coastal hub in Mexico, we can now also officially confirm that is one of the world’s top beach destinations, based on the latest figures released by ForwardKeys.

Los Cabos, merely the Spanish equivalent to ‘the Capes’, is used in reference to two municipalities sitting on the very end of the Baja California peninsula, namely the resort-packed San Jose del Cabo, and Cabo San Lucas, where the famous Arco jutting out of the sea can be seen, and an area of outstanding beauty full of sandy beaches and marine parks.

Previously, only Americans and Mexicans were acquainted with Cabo’s natural wonders, but now the whole world has been let in on their secret:

Los Cabos Is The Second Fastest Growing Destination Worldwide

As assessed by data analytics company ForwardKeys, in a report later revealed at the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), Los Cabos is currently enjoying one of the fastest growth rates among global destinations – higher than Puerto Vallarta, the trendy Mexico City, and even the best-selling all-inclusive vacation package that is Cancun.

In fact, in terms of both recovery and post-pandemic performance, the only city standing in the way of Los Cabos and the number one spot is the East Mediterranean gem of Antalya, in Turkyie (formerly Turkey), where tourism has increased by an astonishing 66% since 2019, against the Mexican Capes’ much more moderate 22%.

Antalya may have a strong lead, but Los Cabos is bridging the gap quickly. Between January and October of this year, the Cabos International Airport recorded a 30.8% jump in arrival figures compared to 2021. On top of that, Cabo seems to be making more of an international impact as promotional efforts reach sun-seekers beyond America.

Other Mexican cities mentioned include Puerto Vallarta, up 13%, and Cancun, charting outside the top five due to a much lower 9% year-on-year increase. It is worth noting this does not mean Cancun is flopping; not in the slightest, as demand is at an all-time high. It is rather an indication is growing slower than Cabo, which is only natural.

After all, Cancun is a well-established international resort, and a renowned one at that. Cabo, on the other hand, is only now being discovered by a wider, non-American public due to the diversification of its tourism campaign, and investment on new travel trends. Historically, it has been commonly known as the go-to winter destination for Californians.

Californians (Americans) still form a majority among vacationers in the area, with 68% of international arrivals being traced back to the Golden State, but other markets are proving just as valuable to Cabo’s economic rebound, in particular Canada. This winter, 19.3% more airplane seats are available on flights leaving from America’s northern neighbor.

This season, Canadians can fly to Cabo from Abottsford (YXX), Calgary (YYC), Edmonton (YEG), Kelowna (YLW), Montreal-Trudeau (YUL), Regina (YQR), Saskatoon (YXE), Toronto-Pearson (YYZ) and Vancouver (YVR). Air Canada offers one-way, nonstop flights from YYZ starting at US$227, while WestJet operates from YVR on fares as low as US$203.

Cabo’s air links extend beyond the American continent as well, with frequent Iberojet flights linking it to Madrid, one of Europe’s busiest hubs; yes, domestic tourism and the U.S. market remain vital for Cabo’s success moving forward, but it is far from being a Mexicans-and-Americans-only wellness retreat – at least not anymore.

One Of The Most Welcoming Places On Earth?

As reiterated by the data experts who compiled the report, the fact that lesser-known Mexican destinations (among non-Americans) are setting new personal records is a ‘testament to the success of open-door policies and the demand for sun and beaches’. Throughout the pandemic, Cabo remained open for foreign visitors restriction-free.

Unlike other competitors in the Pacific, notably Hawaii and the West Coast of the U.S., it continue to welcome tourists without discrimination, exempting not only Americans, but all international arrivals from presenting vaccine certificates, testing prior to departure, or remaining in isolation for days on end in their hotels.

Cabo’s relaxed approach, and Mexico’s on an extent, has undoubtedly contributed to its placing on ForwardKeys’ ranking. Most of the world may have reopened by now, but it is abundantly clear that travelers will continue favoring destinations where they have always felt welcome, even in the most turbulent of times.

With a travel industry more geared toward big spenders and the luxury segment, Americans are looking for cheaper destinations that will not be too hard on their wallets. The average cost of vacations has increased across the board, but the situation is particularly dire in eleven cities that are, in a way, a budget traveler’s worst nightmare.

After restrictions were eased and normal tourism resumed, demand for international travel went through the roof, and prices soon followed in an upward trend. There are still some pretty decent deals to be found, especially when expert advice is considered, but it’s a well-established fact the era of low-cost travel is nearing its end.

For young backpackers, digital nomads starting a business, or simply big savers, this means picking their next destination carefully:

Three U.S. Cities Among The World’s Most Expensive To Live

As customary, The Economist has just revealed the world’s top ten most expensive cities to live (and visit) right now, and a few of America’s favorite holiday escapes have made the list. Looking at the available data between August 16th and September 16th, researchers tracked prices of ‘over 200 goods and services’ across 172 cities.

This year, the ‘most expensive’ of those surveyed were:
1. Singapore (Rank: 1, Index: 100)
2. New York, USA (Rank: 1, Index: 100)
3. Tel Aviv, Israel (Rank: 3, Index: 99)
4. Hong Kong (Rank: 4, Index: 98)
5. Los Angeles, USA (Rank: 4, Index: 98)
6. Zurich, Switzerland (Rank: 6, Index: 94)
7. Geneva, Switzerland (Rank: 7, Index: 91)
8. San Francisco, USA (Rank: 8, Index: 85)
9. Paris, France (Rank: 9, Index: 84)
10. Copenhagen, Denmark (Rank: 10, Index: 83)
11. Sydney, Australia (Rank: 10, Index: 83)
Top 5 Travel Insurance Plans For 2023 Starting At $10 Per Week

The list above comprises the ‘top ten positions’ for the most expensive destinations, though it features eleven entries. In other words, different cities may share the same podium, such as Singapore and New York, which rank together at number one with an index of 100. Similarly, Hong Kong and Los Angeles both chart at number 4 due to their identical index of 98.

The higher the index, the more prohibitive prices are.

Why Is New York The World’s Most Expensive Destination Right Now?

In calculating the index, the Economist Intelligence Unit analyzed prices for more than 200 ‘specified products and services’, including food, drink, transportation, and recreational activities during a six-month interval. Data was gathered from a ‘range of stores’, from mid-priced to higher-priced, in order to obtain the most accurate results.

Then, economists convert local prices into U.S. dollars in order to achieve a ‘comparative index’, using the highest-scoring cities (in this case, Singapore and New York) as reference points. Thus, results are influenced not only by higher inflation rates but the strength of any individual currency against the dollar and exchange rates at the time of conversion.

Naturally, New York rose to the top of the list as the dollar reached an all-time high in October, knocking Tel Aviv off the number one spot it occupied in last year’s ranking. Israel’s leading metropolitan hub and the most liberal city in the Middle East, Tel Aviv, is expected to see hotel prices skyrocket in 2023, alongside a number of tourist hotspots.

Out of all the major destinations eligible to feature, only Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, was not included due to the ongoing war against Russia. The Worldwide Cost of Living Survey (WCOL) concluded prices have risen up to 8.1% overall this year, in ‘local-currency terms’, while inflation has reached a 20-year high since the original study was published.

Helped by the dollar, other cities in the U.S. account for ‘six out of the ten’ of the ‘biggest movers up’ in the past 12 months:
- Atlanta (Index: 70, Rank move: 42)
- Charlotte (Index: 69, Rank move: 39)
- Indianapolis (Index: 69, Rank move: 39)
- San Diego (Index: 70, Rank move: 33)
- Portland (Index: 70, Rank move: 30)
- Boston (Index: 78, Rank move: 29)
Interestingly, the Mexican capital of Mexico City also hiked 33 spots in a single year, propelled by Mexico’s interest-rate hikes, known to have supported the Mexican peso (as attested by The Economist) and the fading demand for budget travel in Mexico. This year, it has a price index of 71, higher than five of the six U.S. cities featured on the ‘climbers’ list.

Conversely, the twelve cities in the ‘bottom top ten’ positions were the following:
1. Damascus, Syria (Rank: 172, Index: 11)
2. Tripoli, Libya (Rank: 171, Index: 22)
3. Tehran, Iran (Rank: 170, Index: 23)
4. Tunis, Tunisia (Rank: 169, Index: 30)
5. Tashkent, Uzbekistan (Rank: 168, Index: 31)
6. Karachi, Pakistan (Rank: 167, Index: 32)
7. Almaty, Kazakhstan (Rank: 166, Index: 34)
8. Ahmedabad, India (Rank: 165, Index: 35)
9. Chennai, India (Rank: 164, Index: 37)
10. Algiers, Algeria (Rank: 161, Index: 38)
11. Bangalore, India (Rank: 161, Index: 38)
12. Colombo, Sri Lanka (Rank: 161, Index: 38)
Damascus, Tripoli, and Tehran are this year’s cheapest destinations, resulting from their respective countries’ weak currencies and unstable economies. The U.S. strongly discourages travel to these three cities in light of their ongoing political turmoils, notably Tehran, where widespread protests have erupted recently.

Move aside, Barcelona. A lesser-known city in Spain many visitors are not even aware exists has peaked at number one on this year’s Expat City Ranking, published by the Expat Insider. In general, foreign residents have praised how easy it is to settle in and the excellent quality of life, with over 85% of them feeling ‘happy’ about the move.

Proving migration trends have reversed, a record number of Americans are leaving the U.S. in recent years as the political situation deteriorates and inflation takes its heavy toll on families. One of the most stable and peaceful regions with a high human development index, Europe remains the go-to destination for many.

In particular, this one hidden gem on the sunny coast of Spain:

Valencia Is The Top Rated City For Expats This Year

Out of 50 popular destinations worldwide, Valencia was named the top city for migrants in 2022. With a surprisingly high ‘happiness level’, higher than any other metropolis in Spain, including the economic powerhouse duo Madrid and Barcelona, the Expat Insider report confirms the vast majority of foreigners, including Americans, feel right at home here.

This is rather unusual, seeing that Valencia is a big city home to over 1.6 million people, and large urban centers tend to scare expats away, but it seems not all of them are looking for some peace and quiet. Valencia is a 2022 highlight not only in the overall ranking but numerous other subcategories, including the Quality of Life Index.

Migrants strongly approve of the city’s infrastructure, especially when it comes to Travel & Transit, where it ranks 3rd for affordability and efficacy. 85% of residents consider public transportation ‘affordable’, compared to the worldwide mean value of 70%. It excels again in the ‘Ease of Settling In Index’, perhaps one of the most relevant:

In total, 74% of expats feel welcome in the area versus 62% globally; in this respect, only the digital nomad hub of Mexico City outperforms Valencia (82%). Additionally, 85% perceive Valencians as very friendly, and 72% are ‘happy with their social life’, against worldwide averages of 66% and 56%, respectively.

Valencia Is More Affordable Than Other Cities In Spain

When it comes to the cost of living, it charts at number 1, with 83% rating it positively. Other domestic competitors like Barcelona and Madrid saw rates of 54% and 69%, respectively. To an extent, Valencia enters at number three in the Personal Finance Index: 67% of respondents are happy financially (versus 60% in the global ranking).

A further 38% are ‘completely’ satisfied (worldwide, the figure is much lower at 22%). Finally, 92% of expats living in Valencia, irrespective of nationality, consider it a safe environment. Other relevant rankings include:
- Affordable Housing (1st)
- Affordable Healthcare (2nd)
- Health & Well-Being (4th)
- Easy Access to Medical Services (7th)
In spite of the laudable results – for the most part – Valencia has had a mixed reaction in the ‘Expat Essentials Index’, where it charts at a moderate number 13. Foreigners complain the most about bureaucracy, one of Europe’s biggest weaknesses (52% vs. 39% globally), and career prospects (30% hold an unfavorable view of the local market).

However, this number may be interpreted as an over-estimation, as Expat Insider editors reiterate only 8% of those surveyed have settled in Valencia for ‘work-related reasons’, resulting in a markedly different expat profile: ‘quality of life’ and a better retirement prospect are the ‘most popular reasons’ for migration.

If you’re a young digital nomad looking for a daily dose of sunshine and culture, chances are you’ll love Valencia as much as retirees do. As the third largest city in Spain, sitting on the Mediterranean coast, it has no shortage of attractions, from world-class museums to sandy beaches and a vibrant nightlife.

Yes, it is a modern trading port and one of Europe’s busiest at that, but that’s not to say it is not infused with History. In fact, Valencia was founded as a Roman colony back in 138 BC, and to this day, it houses one of Spain’s largest historic centers, rivaling that of Seville and Barcelona.
