A recent study has revealed the top domestic destinations in the US for travelers to visit this coming summer. With the cost of both international air travel and hotel bookings abroad reaching expensive new highs over the past few weeks, domestic travel around the US is the perfect way to enjoy a great trip without having to worry too much about how to afford it – and there’s still so much that destinations at home have to offer travelers.

Whether heading to big cities or charming towns, or to breaks by the beach or in the country, travelers in the US are blessed to have so many options on their doorsteps – and so many different ways of reaching them. Here’s a look at which destinations made the cut to be crowned some of the top options for travelers this summer, plus a closer look into how the list was curated.

Top Domestic Destinations – Information For Travelers

The study into which domestic destinations are the best for US travelers this summer was conducted by the personal finance company WalletHub. The company developed a ranking system that took into account a range of different metrics such as travel costs, the attractions a destination has to offer, what the weather will be like, the safety of the destination and how expensive it is.

The study was wide-ranging in its scope, with a total of 100 of the largest metro areas in the US being assessed across the 43 different metrics in order to determine which destination is the top one for travelers this summer. Once the study was complete, it was the metropolitan area of Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford in Florida that came out in first place – just one of several destinations in Florida to feature in the top 20 of the list.

Orlando took the top spot with a score of 69.97 according to WalletHub’s index. The city’s impressive range of activities – notably Disney World and Universal Studios – saw it take top spot when ranked on activities alone, whilst it also performed strongly in the safety and attractions metric. Other Florida destinations that performed well included Tampa in third place, Miami-Fort Lauderdale in 11th and Jacksonville in 14th spot.

For travelers looking to save on travel expenses, Santa Rosa in California was judged to be the destination with the lowest costs and fewest hassles, with Cincinnati, Ohio and Minneapolis, Minnesota close behind. In terms of saving money when you get there, McCallen, Texas was found to be the cheapest destination, with Tulsa, Oklahoma and Augusta, Georgia the second and third cheapest respectively.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, it was Honolulu that came top when it came to the best weather – making it the perfect destination for travelers looking for a beach getaway. The survey found that Chicago was the top destination in terms of attractions, with Los Angeles, Las Vegas, New York, and San Francisco also cited as cities with a lot to offer, making them ideal spots for those who like to get out and about and seize the day on their vacations.

In the last year, the consumer price index for airline tickets has shot up by 25% — the largest jump since the Federal Reserve of St. Louis began tracking the index in 1989. In April alone, airfares spiked by 18.6%, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Even though airline prices are soaring, Americans aren’t hesitating to break out their credit cards and book a trip. A recent Bank of America Institute survey showed spending at airlines and travel agencies is up a whopping 60% year-over-year.

At the same time, as Americans continue to grapple with 40-year high inflation rates and resource-strapped airlines work to get more planes in the air, traveling on a budget seems to be nearly impossible.

Flight prices are pushing travelers to the breaking point

Since the beginning of the pandemic, many airlines have been drowning in debt and struggling to return to a state of profitability.

Now, with travel restrictions easing across the world and higher operating costs to deal with (like higher jet fuel prices), airlines are desperate to serve travel-deprived consumers — and for a major profit.

This is extremely evident when looking at domestic airfares across the country. Many Americans are looking for domestic travel to enjoy their vacations this year but the cost of some airfares is simply out of control.

These are the top 5 most affordable U.S. airports for domestic flights

NetCredit analyzed data from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics to identify the average cost of a flight from major airports around the country.

Many of us default to the biggest airports when searching for flight deals. But prices vary even between the big commercial hubs, and you can often find a cheaper or quicker option nearby.

Competition is a major factor though, with prices often cheaper at big airports with multiple airlines or rival airports nearby. Plus, airlines see some airports as hubs for business travelers who are less choosy about higher fares.

So it does pay off to do some research. Take a look at these 5 most affordable U.S. airports for domestic flights.

5. Punta Gorda, Florida

Average Domestic Fare: $142.48

4. Phoenix-Mesa Gateway, Arizona

Average Domestic Fare: $137.61

3. St. Pete-Clearwater Intl. , Florida

Average Domestic Fare: $130.61

2. Orlando Sanford Intl.

Average Domestic Fare: $118.79

1. Atlantic City Intl.

Average Domestic Fare: $109.43

Atlantic City Intl is the cheapest US airport in NetCredit’s study. But Florida airports dominate the cheap list, making Florida the second-cheapest state on average.

As a tourist hotspot, Florida has more hub airports than any other state, ensuring strong inter-airline competition which is partially responsible for airfare affordability.

Be smart and book ahead to save on airline tickets

Remember the three golden rules of booking cheap flights:
- Book ahead: 95 to 21 days in advance. This booking zone consistently yields the lowest prices for travelers (within 5% of the lowest ticket price).
- …but check third-party discount sites for last-minute reductions if a late booking is unavoidable.
- Be flexible – Research found that flights on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays are cheaper than weekend bookings.
At the end of the day, flying domestically this summer can get very pricey, but if you do your research and compare prices out of different airports, you can save yourself a lot of money.

For example, Los Angeles Intl (LAX) can be pricey. But there are six airports in California that are cheaper than LAX. Long Beach Airport is just a 20-minute drive away and offers California’s cheapest flights from its single, terminal.

The Jamaican city of Montego Bay has been named as one of the top destinations for American travelers to visit this summer.

Famed for its white-sand beaches, laid back way of life, and a whole host of water-based activities, Montego Bay has long since been a favorite for travelers from North America – and with Jamaica recently removing its Covid-19 related entry requirements, that status looks set to grow even further this summer.

Here’s a closer look at why Montego Bay has been named one of the top destinations for American travelers this summer, what type of things travelers can look forward to experiencing in the city, and which other destinations around the world are also considered to be the most in-demand destinations for Americans this summer.

Montego Bay A Top Destination – Information For Travelers

Prior to Covid-19 putting travel plans on hold for the best part of two years now, Montego Bay was amongst the most popular destinations in the world. The year 2019 saw as many as 4.2 million travelers visit Jamaica, with the country proving popular with both air and cruise passengers before the pandemic put a serious dent in the total number of arrivals. This year however, with restrictions eased and travel appetites restored, that figure could be set to rise once again.

A recent study has shown that Montego Bay is one of the top destinations for American travelers this year. According to the Top 10 Summer Destinations review by insurance giants Allianz Partners, Montego Bay is the fourth most popular international summer destination for travelers in 2022, behind the likes of Cancun in first place, San José del Cabo in second, and Oranjestad (Aruba) in third.

Allianz Partners analyzed more than 1,175,000 flight itineraries for trips between five and eight days in length to generate their findings. Unsurprisingly, the countries featured on the list have recently relaxed their entry requirements, making travel much more appealing. Jamaica lifted its Covid-19 entry restrictions in mid-April, making trips to Montego Bay much easier for travelers.

Once in Montego Bay, travelers are unlikely to regret their decision to travel there for summer. The city has a surfeit of world-class beaches, with Doctor’s Cave Beach, Cornwall Beach, and Sandals Montego Bay Beach amongst the best – but with the destination in such high demand, travelers should get down there early in order to secure a top spot on the sand. Once there, travelers can look forward to a wide range of water sports to keep themselves busy – or they can simply choose to unwind in paradise.

Yet Montego Bay is far more than just its admittedly amazing beaches. Nature lovers can swap sand for the Jamaica Swamp Safari Village, try the topography of Cockpit Country or ride the Martha Brae River if that’s more their thing. After working up an appetite, few can resist indulging in some fiery jerk chicken or sampling some of the country’s famous patties, such can be found in abundance.

Travelers should have no problem reaching Montego Bay either, with recent months having seen several routes added to Montego Bay’s Sangster International Airport (MBJ). Frontier was the most recent US airline to do so, with flights from Tampa recently added to their roster, but American, JetBlue and Southwest have also recently increased US-Montego Bay connectivity recently as well.

9. Silverball Pinball Museum

10. Green Sergeant’s Covered Bridge

New Jersey was once home to countless covered bridges. Nowadays, Green Sargeant’s covered bridge is one of the last historic structures of its kind still standing. The busiest airports in the world have now been revealed, and airports in the US have taken the top five spots. With some other typically busy airports around the world still struggling with Covid-19 related restrictions that have impacted travel, the US has dominated the list of the world’s busiest airports once more, with air traffic compared to last year also rising significantly as the world pivots towards living with the virus.

Here’s a look at which airports made the top ten busiest airports in the world list – plus a look at some ideas of how you can try to beat the queues at busy airports wherever you are flying in the world.

Busiest Airports Revealed – Information For Travelers

The research into the world’s busiest airport was carried out by the industry group Airports Council International World. The findings revealed that Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson reclaimed its pre-pandemic position as the world’s busiest airport, knocking China’s Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport down to eighth place in the process. Hartsfield-Jackson saw a total of 75.7 million passengers in 2021 – a significant increase in 2020, but still some 32% away from 2019’s totals.

Filling out the rest of the top five were Dallas Fort Worth International Airport in second with 62.5 million passengers, Denver International Airport in third with 58.8 million, and Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport and Los Angeles International Airport in fourth and fifth place respectively, after having missed out on the top ten last year.

Two more US airports – Charlotte and Orlando – were in sixth and seventh position. Guangzhou and Chengdu airports, both in China, came in at eigth and ninth place, whilst Las Vegas filled out the last spot in the top ten. Each of the airports reported significantly fewer passengers than in 2019, but the gap is closing. With travel picking up once more, here are some ideas of how you can hope to beat the queues at airports.

Beat the Lines at Busy Airports
1. Check the entry requirements of your destination. The last two years have been hell for travel, with restrictions and requirements seemingly changing at the drop of a hat. Setting aside time at home to make sure you have everything you could save hours of queueing, rejection, and requeueing at the airport – and could even be the difference to making the flight or not
2. Get there early. In the age of Covid-19, the last-minute traveler is a rare breed, with those who arrive later often falling foul of the increased screening and queue times and missing flights as a result. Get to the airport in good time to avoid snaking queues and last-minute hiccups
1. Choose your lane wisely. Every traveler can relate to picking a fast-moving queue – only to see it come to a shuddering halt as soon as you join. However, with so many different types of queues – online check-in, business class, bag drop, etc – it’s now more important than ever to make sure you’re in the right lane to check-in, or run the risk of having to snake all the way to the back once more
2. Get your documents ready. Whether it’s passports, tickets, or test results, don’t be the traveler who holds everyone up by rummaging around in your bag for what you need. Keep them at the top of your bag, grouped together and easy to retrieve to ensure you waltz through check-in and security like a breeze

Despite the rules having been in place for years now, the number of travelers who are surprised that they will end up losing their expensive perfume or lotion is still far too high. Carry on items are limited to travel-sized containers that are 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less per item, and must be placed in a quart-sized resealable bag to ensure you’re through security quickly – and make sure your electronic devices are easily removed too.
6. Find out if your airline has a new ultra-fast self-service bag drop like United just launched across many U.S. airports. The free service is already available at all United hubs in the United States, including New York, Washington DC, Houston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Denver, letting customers self-check their bag in 1 minute.

7. Pre-book your security time to skip the lineup completely. At LAX and other major airports, you can make an appointment of when you’ll be cruising through security so you don’t have to wait in a general queue.

8. Of course, having a service like CLEAR or TSA-Precheck will help you dodge long wait times, but they do come with a cost.

The Rio Grande River cuts through Big Bend National Park, offering some amazing opportunities for adventures on the water. For those looking to embark on their first rafting trip, there are several groups in the area that offer guided tours such as Big Bend River Tours. Those with a bit of experience under their belt who are planning to bring or rent their own equipment will also have several routes to choose from, ranging from day trips to overnight trips. Backcountry permits are required for the majority of rafting trips on the Rio Grande.

The pool that now makes up the spring is actually the ruins of a bathhouse that once stood there. Continuously fed by geothermally heated water, the bathhouse itself may be long gone but the spring remains. Water temperatures in the spring can vary but typically hover around 105 degrees Fahrenheit. For this reason, you may want to use caution and limit your soak to a reasonable amount of time, especially if going with children or visiting in the summer.

5. Head Out On A Hike

This park offers countless amazing opportunities to go hiking for all skills levels. For those looking for an easy hike, the Window is without a doubt one of the most memorable. The Window itself is a cliff edge framed magnificently by surrounding rock formations. To get there, you’ll wind around 2 miles through the canyon leading up to it. Thanks to its location in the Chisos mountains as opposed to the hotter desert lowlands, this is also a well-loved trail in the summer months. Those looking for some more challenging routes won’t be disappointed either. Marufo Vegas trail, for example, is a 12-mile excursion that may be tiring, but also offers views of stunning scenery.

6. Go On A Scenic Drive

Summer temperatures in Big Bend National Park can soar upwards of 100 degrees Fahrenheit, which may be too hot for anything more than a short hike for many visitors. Luckily, if you’re planning to visit in the summer, you can still experience some of the gorgeous scenery without braving the high temperatures by checking out one of the park’s scenic drives. One popular route is the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive, which showcases the breathtaking rock formations that make up Big Bend National Park and is especially stunning at sunset or sundown.

7. Go Camping

Finally, with so much to do in this national park, it would be impossible to fit everything into one day. For this reason, many visitors opt to spend a few days to a week exploring the area. While there is one lodge within the park boundaries and several more in the surrounding towns, camping can be a great way to experience even more of the park.
