But another nation tipped to be one of the fastest-growing tourism destinations in 2024 is the beautiful island of Sri Lanka – and so far, it seems like that prediction is coming true.

The latest figures from Sri Lanka’s Tourism Authority show that the country experienced a surge in international visitors for the first two months of 2024 – both January and February were more than 100% up in 2023.

If that trend continues, Sri Lanka will almost certainly be one of the hottest travel destinations on the planet this year—so why should you consider it?

Amazing Cities And Nature

It’s hard to find a traveler who’s been to Sri Lanka and hasn’t absolutely loved it – the country just seems to push all the right buttons and leave people with long-lasting memories.

From the chaotic and exciting streets of Colombo to the beautiful riverside temples of Kandy – Sri Lanka’s cities allow you to sample a culture that is influenced by South India and Europe.

Venture away from the urban jungles, and you will find lush green hills and the chance to encounter exotic wildlife, including elephants.

As a small island, Sri Lanka is also blessed with beautiful beaches on almost every coast with some of the most iconic being Bentota Beach in the southwest and Mirissa Beach on the south coast close to Galle.

Incredibly Affordable

One thing that makes those incredible sights and attractions even more appealing is just how affordable Sri Lanka is.

If you’re willing to backpack and use hostels, you can often find a place to sleep for less than $10 a night, or if you prefer a little more comfort, you should be able to get a decent hotel with a nightly rate of $50 (maybe even less).

Ideal For Digital Nomads

When Sri Lanka first announced it was launching a digital nomad visa, it got a heck of a lot of travelers excited.

The visa allows you to stay for a year, provided you earn the minimum required amount (around $2,000 per month), and can be extended fairly easily.

The latest info from Nomadlist shows that you live in popular destinations such as Galle and Kandy for less than $1,300 per month.

Great At Any Time Of Year

Sri Lanka’s location and unique geographical mix of coastal lowlands and hilly inner regions mean that it can be an all-year-round destination – you just need to make sure you visit the right place at the right time.

The country enjoys warm weather throughout the year.

However, there are two main monsoon seasons: the Yala, which is concentrated in the southwest from April to June, and the Maha, which is worst on the east coast between November and March.

Festivals And Culture

Sri Lankan life is punctuated with many colorful festivals celebrating religion and the country’s history.

February 4 is Sri Lanka’s national Independence Day, while Sinhalese New Year is celebrated on April 13 this year, while Diwali – another hugely celebrated festival in Sri Lanka – takes place on October 31.

Solo Travelers Seem To Love It

For many, Sri Lanka reminds them of what it was like to travel around Southeast Asia many years ago.

The country is still relatively underrated and is a place where you can make up plans as you go along, something that solo travelers will always find appealing.

Simple To Visit

Before you travel, you need to grab yourself a Sri Lanka Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) visa, which will allow you double entry into the country for 30 days.

You apply for it online and there is a fee of $50 – the visa can be extended while you are in Sri Lanka for a further fee.

Sri Lanka is rated as a Level 2 travel advisory by the U.S. government, which means exercise increased caution.

While this is not the lowest level possible, Sri Lanka is generally safe for tourists provided you are sensible – the Level 2 is largely due to some civil unrest in the country back in the fall of 2023.

Spring is always circled on the calendar as one of the best times of year to travel.

Aligning with Allianz’s most recent analysis of over 3.4 million Americans’ travel plans, that seems to be the case for a majority of travelers right now.

The travel insurance provider scoured millions of U.S. travelers’ itineraries for 5 to 8 day stays through April 15th.

Travelers’ bags are packed with passports in hand, ready to jet off to these incredible 10 destinations, according to Allianz:
- 10) Liberia, Costa Rica
- 9) Providenciales, Turks and Caicos
- 8) London, England
- 7) Oranjestad, Aruba
6) Nassau, Bahamas

It’s been a rough go for the Caribbean as of late in terms of safety concerns.

Whether overhyped or not, Nassau, typically deemed safe for tourists, saw a spate of crime in a short span.

While alarming, travelers are still booking vacations to this popular paradisal getaway with world-renowned resorts, otherworldly beaches, and multiple exotic islands.

Safety issues aside, it’s no surprise that Americans are visiting in droves, as the Bahamas is one of the easiest Caribbean islands to reach from mainland USA.

5) Montego Bay, Jamaica

The U.S. State Department issued an alarming travel advisory for Jamaica in January, but it appears as if many travelers are shoving it aside.

So much so that this popular island nation is still breaking tourism records despite safety concerns. That being said, Montego Bay continues to be the most visited.

Known for upscale resorts, amazing beaches, welcoming locals, and savory food, Montego Bay is high on the list for those in need of a vacation.

If you’re a culture-hungry American planning on taking an international trip soon, it’s highly likely that Mexico is at the top of your wishlist. Best known for its warm climate, welcoming locals, and rich heritage, it is still the number one destination for U.S. travelers in 2024.

While Cancun’s upscale resorts and well-frequented beaches continue to lead booking trends by a wide margin, other lesser-known destinations are stepping into the spotlight, either due to their growing importance as wellness hubs or immense historical value.

Falling under the latter category, San Miguel de Allende has been surging in popularity lately. A medium-size city home to just under 200,000 inhabitants, it is the top ‘off-path’ destination in Mexico this year, even though it does not have its own airport, and it is nowhere near the coast.

It has just been featured on American Express‘ list of Trending Destinations, and it’s accumulated tens of millions of views across social media, especially TikTok, over the previous year.

It has won the hearts of Americans, and here are 5 reasons why:

The Prettiest Small City In Mexico

San Miguel (as it is called in the short form) is not only one of the most beautiful cities in Mexico, but also one of its most culturally-charged.

Founded in the 16th-century, it holds UNESCO World Heritage status thanks to its preserved colonial core, and impressive number of historic buildings.

Americans are eager to take culture-based trips this year, with a majority of them never having visited ancient sites, nor marveled at towering cathedrals, and for the odd History buff, San Miguel and its cobbled alleyways and fascinating museums is a no-brainer.

La Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel is pretty hard to miss: the darling of visiting photographers, towering above the main square, it has a striking pink-washed Gothic façade, an uncommon feature for churches on both sides of the Atlantic.

Other points of interest include Casa de Allende, the previous home of infamous revolutionary Ignacio Allende, who was involved in the Mexican War of Independence, San Francisco Church, built in a flamboyant Churrigueresque style, and a vibrant Artisans Market.

Plenty Of Unique Stays To Pick From

Imagine staying in the heart of town, where the rooftop pool offers a privileged view of bell towers and the maze of colorful streets, within short walking distance from the main square, but it’s still a lush-green oasis, where you’re able to relax, and the cacophony of the outside world can’t disturb you?

Or perhaps a hacienda dating back to the period of colonization, embedded in the tradition of New Spain, with its sun-drenched, Mediterranean-style gardens, lovely inner courtyards, and charming rooms that, despite having been renovated, still somehow ooze Old World charm?

San Miguel is full of charming, unique stays, and let’s face it, if you’re staying in the center of town, you have no option but to immerse in the culture, as you are likely to be housed in a former colonial mansion turned into hotel, in a neighborhood that is hundreds-of-years-old.

According to Tripadvisor, the top three coolest and most unique hotels in San Miguel are Casa de Sierra Nevada, a Belmond listing, El Santuario, a hacienda-style guesthouse, and the rustic, reasonably-priced Villa Mirasol Hotel.

Relax While Immersing Yourself In The Culture

Other than the eclectic architecture, richly-decorated Catholic shrines, and the verdant city parks dotted with ornate fountains, San Miguel is famous for its peaceful environment and quaint, laid-back nature, compared to other colonial cities in Mexico.

If you’re looking to relax while soaking up the culture, it is definitely where you should be headed: though it boasts a plethora of colonial landmarks, neighboring Guanajuato can feel a tad too chaotic, with its incessant traffic and bustling crowds.

Mexico City is ten times worse, and pretty as it may be, Guadalajara does not have San Miguel’s highly-reputed hospitality, nor the same concentration of wellness centers and spas, offering Americans top-notch treatments.

The two top-rated spas in town are Sense, A Rosewood Spa, where contemporary relaxation techniques are infused with native, indigenous ingredients, and Liva Aqua, equipped with eight massage rooms, a sauna, steam bath and relaxation areas.

It Is Incredibly Quaint And Safe

Safety is a primary concern for Americans traveling anywhere in Mexico, and the media is largely to blame for that, having painted a bleak picture and presented the Latin gem as crime-ridden and gang-dominated for decades now.

As it turns out, not all parts of Mexico are plagued by rampant crime, and certainly not picturesque San Miguel.

Walking the city center, there is no need to get jumpy or clutch your personal belongings tightly every time you accidentally rub shoulders with a passerby:

Petty crimes and violence rates are lower than in the state capital of Guanajuato, and most American tourists report zero problems when vacationing in the municipality.

It is remarkably tourist-friendly, with well-lit streets after sundown and a year-round tranquil atmosphere.

That being said, you should not make a spectable of yourself by attending touristy spots bedecked with expensive jewelry, nor wander off towards peripheral, poverty-stricken areas, as you logically wouldn’t do in any destination, including in the States. It is pretty safe, just don’t push your luck.

It Can Be Very Affordable

On top of being safe, San Miguel is quite affordable compared to most tourist cities in Mexico. You can stay in a centrally-located, non-luxurious hotel paying between $139 and $277 per night.

Food is on the cheaper end, too.

If splurging on fine dining isn’t on the cards this time, you can go order a plate of tamales with breaded milanesa beef, rice, and a salad on the side in a local restaurant for less than $15, or grab a tasty tostada or tacos from a street market for less than five bucks.

Though this depends entirely on the preferred level of comfort in hotels, the restaurants visited, and whether you’re the kind who brings expensive souvenirs back, a 3-day trip to San Miguel can cost only $180, excluding hotels.

As you can see, San Miguel is very low-risk, it has attractive prices, the cultural value is immeasurable, and there are endless cute Instagrammable corners to be discovered. It doesn’t have an airport, but it’s only one-and-a-half hours away from both BJX and QRO.

How To Get To San Miguel From The U.S.

BJX is the main international airport serving the state of Guanajuato, with nonstop flights from a number of U.S. cities including Atlanta, starting March of this year, Chicago (Midway), Fresno, Los Angeles, Oakland, Sacramento and San Jose (California).

QRO is located near Querétaro, the capital of the state of the same name – San Miguel sits near the border – and it hosts flights from Chicago O’Hare, Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston (Intercontinental), and San Antonio in Texas.

Arriving to either Guanajuato or Querétaro, there are bus connections available to those traveling onward to San Miguel de Allende. Soon enough, a scenic train visiting the colonial cities of the region could be launched.

Following the Maya and Isthmus Trains, which launched simultaneously in 2023, local business leaders and tourism officials are now pushing for a third scenic train connecting León, Guanajuato, Querétaro and San Miguel de Allende.

The project is still on the drawing board, and as of now, there is no set date for commencement.

Why This Country Of 227 Islands Will Be One Of The Top European Destinations This Summer

With a recorded history spanning at least three millennia, a world-renowned cuisine, and a whopping 227 paradisaical islands to its name, Greece is up there with Italy, Spain and Türkiye as one of the top destinations in the Mediterranean, having hosted 32.7 million tourists last year alone.

In 2024, arrival figures are expected to soar further even, with the local tourism sector having now fully recovered from the crisis, and demand at an all-time high, surpassing 2019 levels.

Based on the available data, it’s safe to say it could break tourism records this summer.

Still, you may be wondering what are some of the not-so-obvious things about Greece that have got travelers hooked in the first place (other than, of course, it lays claim to Europe’s party capital):

Islands, Islands And More Islands

As we have mentioned already, Greece encompasses 227 islands, excluding the smaller, uninhabited islets, and to reduce them to the usual Instagrammer-friendly live sets of bougainvillea-filled alleys and overtouristed towns is a gross mistake you don’t want to make.

The Aegean archipelagos are more diverse than they get credit for, and though the above description certainly applies to Santorini, Mykonos and the like, where overdevelopment and celeb-frequented beach clubs have all but obliterated the native charm, there are countless quieter spots you can escape to.

From hilly Folegandros, where cobbled towns sit atop tall cliffs overlooking azure waters, to offbeat Anafi, with its golden sand beaches and traditional blue domes, to an unspoiled Patmos, where a monumental medieval fortress towers over an ancient chóra, Greece will steal your heart like it did ours.

It’s Easy To Get Around

Seeing it administers a massive coastline and hundreds of islands, some so far away from the mainland their closest neighbors are, in fact, Middle Eastern countries like Türkiye, you would expect it to be trickier to get around or island-hop in Greece, but that’s not the case at all.

All island destinations are served by either intra-European or domestic flights from larger hubs or week-round ferry connections: From Piraeus, the main Athenian port, you can travel anywhere in the Aegean Sea, with comfortable overnight ferries linking the capital to islands as far East as the Dodecanese.

Traveling within Greece is also surprisingly affordable.

Fares for a sleeping cabin in commercial ferries traveling from Athens to Mykonos average $41, from Athens to Kos $67, or from Athens to Crete starting from only $34 when booked in advance with Minoan or Anek Lines.

Don’t Underestimate The Greek Mainland

The quaint collective of Greek islands is indisputably the main reason why tourists will be flocking to the Southeastern European gem this summer, but they shouldn’t be in a hurry to leave the mainland for the earliest Santorini-bound ferry.

Continental Greece is famous for its cosmopolitan cities, with Athens and Thessaloniki to name a couple, natural and manmade wonders, including the Meteora Monasteries, resting on vertiginous free-standing pillars of rock, and scenic train journeys traversing a verdant Peloponnese nature.

Athens’ restaurant-lined Plaka district, bustling street bazaars and UNESCO-listed Parthenon are just as quintessential Greece as whitewashed churches and blue domes, and trust us, you don’t want to leave Greece without paying a visit to Delphi, formerly seat of The Oracle in Ancient Times.

Greece Has Better Weather On Average Compared To Other European Countries

As one of Europe’s Southernmost states, boasting year-round warmer temperatures, particularly in the Aegean archipelagos, it goes without saying Greek weather is as much an incentive for tourists to come as is the fascinating culture and postcard islands.

It enjoys an unusually-long high season, starting as early as April, when seas begin getting warmer, clouds dissipate, and those blood-orange spring sunsets make a triumphant return to the Cyclades, and that perfect ‘Greek island weather’ extends well into late October.

July and August are the hottest months to visit, but for most of the year, Greece is surprisingly pleasant to visit, if not for swimming, then for sunbathing.

It’s still only March, and islands like Crete, Rhodes and Karphatos are already recording temperatures as high as 66.2°F.

Greece Can Be More Affordable Than You Think

Members of the Mykonos white-on-white cult will beg to differ, but a one-week trip to Greece does not have to set you back by thousands of dollars unless you’re actively looking to splurge on a cave suite with your own private lagoon or eat in fancy restaurants every night.

Food in Greece is actually quite affordable by European standards, owing to its varied selection of locally sourced fresh vegetables, tropical fruit, and dairy products.

Eating as cheap as $13 shouldn’t be an issue in mainland cities or even larger islands like Corfu and Crete.

Naturally, touristy islands packed with seaside resorts tend to be pricier than average – a simple moussaka dinner in Santorini can cost a shocking $22, versus $9 in Athenian restaurants – but in opting for the round-the-corner, ten-dollar gyros every now and then, you can cut down costs significantly.

Overall, accommodation in Greece is not as expensive as you might think, either.

The average price for a one-week stay is an acceptable $603 – once again, we’re talking mid-range, not remarkable all-inclusive villa stays.

7 Nonstop Flights From The U.S.

The final reason for Greece’s surging popularity this year is the improved connectivity with the United States, which is set to increase demand among Americans and help them realize their wildest Mamma Mia-inspired fantasies without long stopovers in third countries.

There are still no Transatlantic flights from the U.S. to any Greek island – airports are far too small, and in most cases, they even lack airports altogether – so you can’t head straight to Santorini from New York, but you can easily find nonstop flights to Athens.

Athens International is hosting commercial flights from as many as 7 U.S. hubs this summer, including JFK, Newark, D.C., Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago and Atlanta.

Once they get to Athens, travelers can connect to domestic flights, or hop on a ferry to reach the islands.

This Is The Top Digital Nomad Destination In France – And It’s Not Paris

France may be the number one tourist destination globally, hosting over 100 million annual visitors and being the proud home of the landmark Eiffel Tower, the world’s gastronomic capital and a cultural hub of the first order, but it’s far from being a popular ‘workcation’ spot for digital nomads.

If their preference for Southeast Asia or Latin America is any indication, they actively avoid expensive destinations, and to put it simply, France isn’t exactly known for being the budget alternative, especially when rent alone in Paris can set you back by $1,730 per month.

On the other hand, there is nothing quite like waking up to freshly-baked baguettes from the local boulangerie every day, strolling verdant city parks, and working from a traditional French cafe with views of remarkable architectural feats: if anything, it’s soul-elevating.

But is it possible to work remotely from France, partake in that unrivaled joie de vivre, and still not break the bank?

If it’s the charming Montpellier where you’re headed, instead of the overtouristed City of Lights, then you might just get away with it:

Montpellier Is The Digital Nomad Capital Of France

According to Nomad List, the number one platform for tracking nomad trends worldwide, Montpellier is the top-ranking nomad destination in France, beating Lyon, Nice, and even Paris, with a total score of 3.36/5. For comparison, Paris scores 2.95/5.

Unless you’re a Francophile, however, or you’ve happened to have traveled overland from Spain into France, with a stopover in Montpellier, you might not have been properly introduced to this charming city of Occitania (we must add, mainland France’s southernmost region).

So what is it about this lesser-known city that’s so special, and most importantly, what has it got to offer nomads not only on the cultural front but also in terms of infrastructure?

Also, how actually affordable is it to live in Montpellier, as opposed to visiting for a short period?

One Of The Cultural Centers Of Southern France

National borders are a relatively new concept, and in order to fully grasp the essence of Montpellier, we must first take a look at its ancient History but don’t worry, we’ll keep it light and fun for you: prior to France existing as a state, it belonged to the Crown of Aragon.

Aragon was a kingdom that existed in the Middle Ages, which evolved to become a territory in Spain.

So yes, throughout much of its early development, Montpellier was more closely associated with the neighboring sunny country than the French-speaking world proper.

It is where numerous important events took place, from the birth of James I, a Spanish king, to the establishment of one of the world’s first universities (as a matter of fact, it is still home to the oldest medical school in operation).

If you’re considering a temporary relocation to France as a remote worker, culture is likely to be in your scope of interest, and you’ll be glad to know that Montpellier is a culture-loving nomad’s playground with a wealth of historical monuments.

These include a majestic Gothic Cathédrale Saint-Pierre, the Tours des Pins et de la Babotte, two perfectly preserved examples of medieval fortifications, the beautiful Place de la Comédie, a car-free square flanked by stately buildings, and an Ancient Citadel.

Montpellier Is A Lot Warmer Than Paris

Remember how Montpellier was historically a Spanish city? It might have been purchased by France at the turn of the 14th century, but it still feels a lot more ‘Southern European’ than it does ‘French’: winters are pretty mild – it’s currently 60°F – and summers are scalding hot.

Montpellier is not exactly coastal, but it is only a 6.2-mile drive from the beach, and it definitely has a traditional Mediterranean climate. Other than the landmark-packed city itself, major attractions in the area include La Grand Motte, a seaside town, and the Palavas and Carnon beaches.

Motte is a bustling development zone distinguished for its pyramidal resorts and extended miles of thin, golden sand bordered by the azure Mediterranean, and it’s every Montpelliérain‘s go-to beach getaway at the weekends.

We get it, Montpellier has a lot going for it on the culture front, and it’s one of those Med – or marginally-Med – sunny hotspots Europeans love escaping to in the colder months, but why would nomads come here in the first place?

Why Do Nomads Love Montpellier?

The answer is simple: this is a youthful, diverse city, with one-fourth of its 277,000 residents being young students – Montpellier University is one of the oldest and most renowned, right? – and the environment is a lot livelier than in other historical French cities with aging populations.

Cities with a younger demographic tend to be naturally more open to foreigners, as students are likely to speak English as a second language, unlike older generations in France, and the social scene is considerably more active.

Additionally, the high quality of life is a huge draw for nomads, particularly Americans who live in sprawling cities made for cars: in Montpellier, you most certainly don’t need one, as it is the largest pedestrian zone in Europe.

This makes the city a lot greener and more pleasant to live in, and we can’t think of anything better than to swap Paris’ gritty, crime-ridden metro or Marseille’s intricate bus networks for Montpellier’s walkable, cafe-filled Old Quarter.

Speaking of cafes – us nomads always gravitate towards them in the end – Smartscrapers counts at least 80 such establishments in this conurbation, from your mainstream work-friendly Starbucks, to more authentic, local-owned spots.

Montpellier Is Not As Expensive As Paris

Montpellier can be less expensive to live in than other cities in France, as it is not on every tourist’s radar, miles away from other tourist hotspots (it’s a whole 464 miles from the capital, and 202 miles from Nice and its adjacent French Riviera).

Unless they are headed for Occtania specifically, they are unlikely to add sunny Montpellier to their itinerary. If anything, it makes it less crowded and not nearly as costly in Paris: according to Nomad List, it costs $3,715 per month to live in Montpellier.

That’s still pricey, considering living expenses in your average nomad hub are between $1,000 and $2,000. Still, if you’re keen on moving to France, you should know that, in general, it is not an affordable destination.

That being said, Montpellier is a far better deal than Paris, France’s number one city, or the traditional Azure Coast near the Italian border, where nomads set themselves back between $4,582 and $5,151 per month.

Finally, Montpellier is well-connected to other parts of France and other European countries. There are high-speed ‘TGV’ train connections to Paris, Marseille, and Nice, as well as cross-border service leaving from Montpellier towards Spain.

As for the local Montpellier–Méditerranée Airport, it hosts a number of low-cost flights from European, North African, and Middle Eastern hubs, such as Rome in Italy, Heraklion in Greece, and Istanbul in Turkiye.

Hurricane-Hit Acapulco Is Expected To Make A Comeback This Year

Last year, Hurricane Otis wreaked havoc upon Acapulco, a traditional resort town in the Mexican Pacific famous for its high-rise buildings, long miles of sandy beaches, and riotous nightlife, littering the boardwalk, closing down hotels, and essentially putting the brakes on tourism.

According to a new report issued by the Mexican Government, though damage from the event has been significant, the community is approaching a full recovery, with reconstruction underway, health brigades already done with most of the cleaning, and tourist services having resumed.

4,534 rooms are already available for booking out of 127 hotels, equaling to roughly 45% of the total occupancy, and lucky for incoming tourists, a majority of those centered around the upscale Zonas Tradicional and Dorada.

Americans Are Hungrier For Culture, And There’s No Better Place To Find It Than Mexico

Unlike the United States, where remnants of the original English colonies, or even traces of more distant civilizations are hard to come by, Mexico is littered with historical sites, with every major city featuring colonial zones, and over 200 Mayan and Aztec sites scattered around the territory.

This cultural wealth makes it inherently fascinating to Americans, who in their vast majority will have never set foot inside 500-year-old cathedrals, climbed step pyramids, admired traditional architecture, nor come into contact with any ancient culture whatsoever.

This year, Mexican authorities have made great strides in highlighting the country’s invaluable and diverse heritage, including the establishment of a Gastronomic Corridor in the colonial heart of storied Merida and reviving historical settlements through their ‘Pueblos Magicos‘ initiative.

There’s never been a better time to take a plunge into Mexican History than now, when colonial tourism is at its peak and new exciting archaeological discoveries are on the horizon: just last year, four unheard-of Mayan ruins opened to the general public for the first time ever.

More Than 700 Daily Flights To Mexico From The U.S.

Of course, we couldn’t discuss Mexico’s record-breaking levels of tourism heading into 2024 without bringing up connectivity: as stated in the very first paragraph of this article, it is a no-brainer thanks to the geographical proximity with the U.S. and multiple flight options.

Irrespective of where they live and fly out from, Mexico is the most accessible vacation for the average American traveler, as there are over 700 daily flights scheduled between the United States and Mexico, and every international Stateside airport has links to the Latin American giant.

Due to the wide availability of flights, predatory pricing practices between different airlines, and the year-round demand, airfares can be quite affordable, too: according to booking platform Kayak, there are Mexico-bound flights departing from the United States for as cheap as $127 one-way.

Mexico Is Safer Than Most Latin American Countries

Finally, one of the main reasons why Mexico is poised for a further surge in popularity in 2024 is the reinforced safety. While other Latin American countries have slid into a downward spiral of violence in recent months, the AMLO-led nation has remained relatively stable.

Great Smoky Mountain National Park is home to over 1500 species of flowering plants that come alive in spring (more biodiversity than any other park in North America!).

If you can visit on May 1-4, you’ll catch the national park’s 74th Annual Spring Wildlife Flower Pilgrimage.

This festival includes professionally guided walks educating on local flora and fauna, exhibitions, and various workshops on everything from pottery to foraging.

Great Sand Dunes National Park

Visiting this lesser-known national park is a unique experience.

Home to the tallest sand dunes in the country, you can hike to the top for a surreal view of the neighboring dunes and mountains.

Adrenaline seekers can rent equipment and partake in the fun of sandboarding down the dunes.

Located 200 miles south of Denver, spring is the best time to visit this national park before the weather becomes uncomfortably hot.

Hot Springs National Park

If chasing the rare eclipse totality is a priority for you, this underrated national park is a great spring destination.

One of only 2 national parks that will experience totality this year, you can watch the eclipse from Hot Springs on April 8th.

The charmed surrounding town of Hot Springs, Arkansas will be hosting all kinds of eclipse festivities including music festivals and vendor booths.

Spring is also the perfect time to enjoy soaking in the glorious hot springs while daytime temperatures are still cool.

Joshua Tree National Park

This surreal desert ecosystem is best visited in spring before the stifling heat of summer sets in.

You’ll find all kinds of weird and wacky plant life among these landscapes, from various cacti to the iconic gnarled Joshua trees.

Another benefit of visiting in spring is to see the flowers blooming in a neon pop of color reminiscent of the trees of The Lorax movie.

And while more national parks than ever have called for timed entries and advance reservations, Joshua Tree does not currently require either.

Yellowstone National Park

If you want more solitude and fewer selfie sticks, spring is the time to visit this wildly popular park.

Yellowstone is home to the greatest wildlife density in the lower 48 states, and visiting in April is a magical time to see baby animals.

Young bison nurse at their mothers’ sides, bear cubs crawl out of their dens, and wolf packs play with their young during this special time of year.

Death Valley

This national park lives up to its name as its 120 degree daytime highs can be dangerous in the summertime.

Death Valley’s landscape is fascinating and varied–you can check out the lowest point in the North America (Bad Water Basin), or look out over rolling hills and geological formations.

One of the most epic places in the US for stargazing, this national park is hosting its Dark Sky Festival March 1-3 this year.

The festival will include educational talks on astronomy and the opportunity to learn from scientists out in the park.

Vacation rental marketplace Home2Go just released its annual Beach Index.

Using search data, this index was compiled by prioritizing the destinations with the best weather, the least searches on Google for “spring travel” (hello less crowds), and affordable accommodation prices.

We present to you the five most underrated beach destinations in the U.S.:

Sombrero Beach, Marathon, Florida

While Florida may be one of the most popular spots for Americans on holiday, there are still some places here that feel like a secret.

Sombrero Beach in Marathon, a small island community between Key Largo and Key West, is one of these hidden treasures.

This stretch of paradise is a place that attracts mostly Floridians, and you’re likely to have more breathing room to replenish with its natural beauty.

Boasting clear turquoise waters and powdery soft sand, this beach is one of the best in the Keys.

Outside of playing in the ocean, Marathon has plenty to offer visitors, including The Turtle Hospital and Dolphin Research Center–both of which offer tours.

If you’re like me and crave long, desolate stretches of sand and shore over the beaches commercialized with resorts and bars, then Boca Chica Beach is the place for you.

You won’t find restaurants, hotels, or even restroom facilities here, only miles of pristine nature and emerald waters.

This is the perfect place to escape civilization and recharge in nature.

Boca Chica Beach has excellent birdwatching, mangrove orchards, and if you’re lucky you’l even spot some turtles nesting during the spring and summer months.

It also happens that this area is home to Elon Musk’s SpaceX Center; if you’re looking for a unique activity, you can head over and check out the rockets for yourself.

While I did not find an exact official date yet, there is predicted to be another launch in March of 2024!

Saint George Island State Park, Saint George Florida

Located on a barrier island off of Florida’s “forgotten coast”, you’ll find peaceful stretches of empty sand and waves here instead of high rises.

Saint George Island remains relatively undeveloped despite consistently being rated as one of the best beaches in America.

This park has a classically beautiful beach, fishing opportunities, and top-notch places to snorkel and scuba dive.

Once the sun goes down, you can take advantage of the dark sky here and stargaze by the ocean.

St George Island is a quaint island town with a laid-back atmosphere and plentiful restaurants with great fresh seafood options to try.

Surfside Beach, Surfside Texas

Located just an hour outside of Houston, this quiet beach town is the perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Surfside Beach has warm water from the Gulf of Mexico and plenty of waves to play in.

In fact, this lesser-known spot is one of the best places for surfing in Texas.

This sleepy Texas town lacks commercial hotels, and is best defined by its colorful beach houses available to rent from locals on Vrbo or Airbnb.

Gulf Shores Beach, Gulf Shores Alabama

When it comes to dreamy travel destinations in the U.S., Alabama may not have been a state that you thought had much to offer.

But Gulf Shores Alabama will pleasantly surprise you–with miles of sugary white beaches, award winning restaurants, and plenty to do, this Southern gem may just be your new favorite escape.

While the town’s highlight is definitely its glittering coastline, you can also explore the Civil War era Fort Morgan, take a dolphin spotting cruise, or spend the day fishing.

The aim of the report was not only to discover how people are currently feeling about overseas travel but also to shed some light on the most popular international destinations of spring 2024.

According to ETC’s meticulously curated polls, these 10 European countries stood out as the most popular hotspots among American travelers.

1. France

It seems like the most visited country on Earth still has travelers in a chokehold, drawing in millions of people through its famous cultural scene and even better-known attractions.

Chances are that if you’ve been dreaming about traveling the world for some time now, France has already made its way onto your bucket list – and millions of lucky Americans are crossing it off of theirs this spring.

Of the U.S. citizens planning to go to Europe these upcoming months, a whopping 35% have chosen France as their destination, which is nothing short of remarkable.

So, take this as a sign that you, too, can fulfill your dreams of seeing Paris from the Eiffel Tower, lounging on the soft-sanded beaches of Nice, or enjoying a glass of wine in the vineyards Bordeaux.

2. Italy

The gorgeous Mediterranean country fell just one percentage point short of beating France to the no. 1 spot, which goes to show just how popular Italy has gotten this last year – and for good reason.

You’ll be hard-pressed to find a destination as gorgeous, charming, and stunningly diverse, not only in Europe but the entire world.

5. Austria & Greece

The fifth place is shared between Austria and Greece, two wildly different but equally fascinating countries.

A lot’s been said about Greece, its record-breaking year, and paradisic beaches these past few months, so chances are you already know what to expect from the iconic Mediterranean country.

However, for those of you seeking the ultimate Alpine experience, complete with historical wonders and outdoor activities, Austria might just be the better choice, not to mention that Vienna, the capital, is one of those cities that needs to be experienced at least once in a lifetime.

Rounding Up The Top 10

Since there were four countries occupying the fourth and fifth spots, there are only three destinations left to complete the top 10 ranking of the most popular European destinations this spring.

Ireland is the proud holder of the no. 6 spot, with over 10% of surveyed travelers planning to explore the Emerald Isle, followed by Portugal and Belgium, which enjoy a visitor share of 9% and 8%, respectively.
