Unveiling Paradise: This Latin American Gem Sets New Tourist Arrival Record

When you think of Latin America, it’s probably tourism giants like Mexico, Argentina and Colombia that come to mind, and that’s only understandable:

Between one’s luxurious Caribbean resorts and ancient Mayan sites and the others’ charming colonial cities and delectable street food, they’re often a first-time visitor’s preferred pick when planning a trip to the Global South, and they’re undoubtedly extremely popular.

That being said, there’s been renewed interest in what’s the historically-overlooked central part of LatAm, stereotypically known for being a no man’s land full of unmapped and marred with underdevelopment––but to which extent is all of that true?

And if so, why is Costa Rica of all places breaking its own all-time arrival record and positioning itself among the key players in the subcontinent’s market?

On Costa Rica’s Popularity Rise

A name you’re likely to have come across at some point in your Instagram feed or travel searches, Costa Rica is a small, transitory country in Central America boasting a vast biodiversity and naturally Rich Coastlines––pun intended, and yes, in the plural:

Not only is a quarter of its landmass comprised of protected greenery, making the country a sanctuary for wildlife, it offers access to both the Caribbean and Pacific Coasts, with up-and-coming resort towns and crowd-free beaches galore.

For the first half of 2024, tourism in Costa Rica soared, already registering a 14.5% increase year-on-year, and it’s likely to grow further, especially with the abundance of cheap flights traveling to San Jose––roundtrip flights from Miami starting from a shockingly cheap $232.

According to Tourism Minister William Rodriguez, 92% of visitors to Costa Rica arrive by air, mainly from the U.S. and Canada, and this year, the number of U.S. vacationers, in particular, has increased by 18% compared to the same period in 2023.

At this rate, it looks set for a record-breaking 2024.

The question is, what is it about this lesser-known Latin gem that has got them so hooked?

This Is What Makes Costa Rica Actually Great

Costa Rica’s main attraction is its thriving nature, which is probably one of the most diverse in Latin America, despite the country’s less-advantageous size: other than the honey-colored beaches, we’re talking volcanoes, cloud and rainforests, and lake-dotted provinces.

It plays host to a number of LatAm’s most magnificent natural landmarks, including La Fortuna Waterfall, a vertiginous, fast-flowing drop emptying into shallow, swim-friendly pools and surrounded by lush scenery.

The waterfall is already worth flying all the way to Costa Rica to see, but wait until you see the trail that leads you there, with the towering trees, chirping of rare birds, and even the occasional sighting of endangered spider monkeys.

At the foot of the majestic Arenal Volcano, Mistico Arenal is yet another national park you can’t miss during an excursion to Costa Rica, mainly for the scenic freshwater lake and the iconic hanging bridges you will find here.

Nearby, also boasting views of the volcano, Monteverde has a 1.3-mile long trail lapping around a cloud forest, and if you’re keen on escaping into nature for longer than a day, Tortuguero is the perfect spot to base yourself:

This large eco-reserve is located in the heart of the jungle, and according to Booking.com, there are at least 22 accommodation options, ranging from cheap hostels to pricier four-star hotels.

As for the park itself, it provides guided wildlife sighting tours––watch out for those big-toothed crocs if you’re going near the water!––boat rides through winding, nature-made canals, and as it borders the Caribbean Coast, there are even beaches in the proximity of the tourist facilities.

How Does Costa Rica Fare As A Beach Destination?

Unlike the Mexican Caribbean or Colombia’s Northern Coast, Costa Rica is not primarily a beach destination.

While it does boast over 800 miles of coastline, the country is, in fact, best known for its numerous waterfalls and untouched landscape.

What we’re trying to say is, don’t come to Costa Rica expecting to find a hotel-packed Cancun or a lively Cartagena anywhere on the Pacific or Caribbean sides: there are coastal resorts, but they’re far more laid-back, and tourism is (much) smaller in scale––and that’s the beauty of it.

Vacationing in Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica’s best-loved resort district on the Central Pacific Coast, you can expect truly unspoiled public beaches completely unclaimed by hospitality giants, more wildlife refuges, including a butterfly atrium and crocodile lagoon, and tourist-friendly treks.

There are some bars and nightlife venues scattered along the shoreline, but Tulum-goers should bear in mind this is not a major party destination––that’s not to say you can’t find the odd beach bar or entertainment venue within a short distance of your jungle retreat.

Accommodation is considerably less expensive here, too: an overnight stay at Hotel Plaza Yara, a four-star listing 800 meters from Manuel Antonio’s main beach, will set you back by $113 per night, while more-modest alternative Hospedaje Colibri costs as little as $23 to book.

Budget-Friendly Adventures

Costa Rica is a small nation, roughly the size of West Virginia, making it incredibly easy to explore, whether you’re traveling solo on a road trip through the jungle-dominated hinterland or being accompanied by a guide.

As smooth a ride as Costa Rica may be, compared to its Central American counterparts, anyway, we would still recommend the latter:

By booking a guided tour, you get to optimize your time, visit hidden gems that wouldn’t normally feature on mainstream travel brochures––and only locals have heard of––and maximize your safety when heading deep into the rainforest.

Departing from Costa Rican capital San Jose, there are countless activities to choose from this Arenal Volcano, Hot Springs & Zip Lining Tour (with meals) from $179, to the top-rated Tortuga Island Tour with Snorkeling and Lunch––warm seas and turquoise waters from as cheap as $115!

From La Fortuna, another popular base for tourists in Costa Rica, you can join a nighttime tour walking through the rainforest for the best possible chance of spotting elusive animals in their natural habitat, starting from $42.50.

Alternatively, in order to beat the crowds, book this $48 early-bird Arenal Volcano Tour with lunch and a hot spring visit added––running on a duration of only 6 hours, and avoiding the challenging sections of the hike, it is perfect for mobility-challenged individuals, or inexperienced trekkers in general.

Costa Rica Is One Of The Safest Destinations In LatAm

Safety is a major concern for Americans traveling in Latin America.

There is definitely a level of exaggeration on American media’s part, but we won’t sugarcoat it and paint LatAm as a perfectly safe destination: local crime levels are generally higher than most U.S. states or Europe, and extra precaution is needed when venturing into certain areas.

In Costa Rica’s case, however, safety issues are not as prominent.

That is because the country has a long-standing reputation of being a ‘neutral’ zone in the Central American strip, with a stable constitutional democracy and fast-developing economy setting it apart from nearby dictatorships and failing states.

Crime in tourism hotspots is not unheard of, yet it is by no means widespread, much like the Mexican Caribbean or Punta Cana.

The U.S. State Department itself classes Costa Rica as a moderately safe destination, having added it to Level 2 of its Travel Advisory, meaning Americans are not discouraged from visiting––on the other hand, they must exercise increased caution due to crime.

They add the Costa Rican authorities provide ‘additional security resources’ in areas tourists frequent, and by ‘increased caution‘, they mean avoiding flashing valuable items like expensive jewelry and electronic devices and booking activities through reputable providers only.

Are you planning your first trip to New York City?

I love New York (and I may just be a little biased since I’m from there) so I want you to have the best time on your trip!

That’s why I’m sharing the most common mistakes I see tourists make so you know what to avoid in order to have a great experience in NYC.

These are the top seven mistakes to avoid on your trip to New York:

1. Not Taking The Subway

One of the biggest mistakes that tourists make in New York is not taking the subway.

You might have heard that the subway is unsafe or you might just feel overwhelmed at the prospect of navigating the subway system.

But I promise you that the subway isn’t that bad! It’s much cheaper than taking taxis or Ubers everywhere, and it’s almost always faster than driving too, thanks to New York’s insane traffic.

Taking the subway is just $2.90 per ride. You can buy a MetroCard in most subway stations and load it up with however much money you want.

If you’ll be in New York for more than a few days, it often makes sense to pay $34 for a 7-day unlimited MetroCard instead of paying per ride.

2. Staying In Times Square

Another mistake that first-time visitors make in New York? Choosing a hotel in Times Square.

There is so much more to NYC than Times Square. I understand that on your first trip to New York, you probably want to see Times Square, but that doesn’t mean you need to stay in Times Square. It’s the least authentic and most touristy area in the city.

If you do want to stay in Midtown, I recommend choosing a hotel near the southern end of Central Park. This is a great area within easy walking distance of many tourist attractions including Central Park, lots of museums, and Broadway.

If you want to stay in a more hip Downtown neighborhood, Chelsea is a good option because it’s between Midtown and cool neighborhoods like Greenwich Village, West Village, East Village, SoHo, and more.

3. Eating At Chain Restaurants

There’s a running joke about the giant Olive Garden restaurant in Times Square. Don’t come to New York and eat at the same chain restaurants you can find all over the United States!

New York is one of the best foodie destinations in the world, and you can find a wide variety of cuisine for every taste. It truly is a melting pot of different flavors and cultures.

So skip the chain restaurants and instead try some authentic local cuisine. If you aren’t sure where to start, a food tour is a great activity to book in NYC!

You can’t leave NYC without trying a classic New York slice from Joe’s Pizza or a bagel with your choice of toppings from Ess-a-Bagel.

4. Not Observing Proper Sidewalk Etiquette

There’s a stereotype that New Yorkers are rude, which I don’t think is quite justified.

If you ever need help with directions or want a recommendation for where to eat or things to do, New Yorkers are actually very helpful and approachable.

But one thing that does irritate New Yorkers? When tourists stop right in the middle of a sidewalk.

This disrupts the flow of foot traffic, and in a city as busy and crowded as New York, that’s a problem. Similarly, you should stick to walking in the correct “lane” on the sidewalk (same sides as how cars drive.)

If you do need to stop to check where you’re going or send a text message or take a photo, step off to the side and don’t block the sidewalk where people are walking.

5. Overpaying For Tourist Attractions

It’s no secret that NYC is a pricy destination, but you can save money on tourist attractions.

For example, many popular museums in New York have a “suggested donation,” but you can actually pay whatever you want, even if that’s just $1. Some of these museums include the American Museum of Natural History, the Museum of the City of New York, and the Brooklyn Museum.

Many other museums have one day per week where you can enjoy free or pay-what-you-wish admission.

When it comes to Broadway shows, you can often score cheap tickets for shows online by using TodayTix. Or you can try your luck waiting on line (side note, New Yorkers say on line and not in line) at TKTS, a booth in Times Square with deeply discounted same-day tickets.

Another popular (and expensive) thing to do in NYC is visit an observation deck. There are so many to choose from: the Empire State Building, the Top of the Rock, One World Observatory, Edge, and more. You really only need to visit one, though!

I personally recommend Top of the Rock — in my opinion, it offers the best skyline view of NYC, and it’s the only place where you can see a direct view of the iconic Empire State Building.

6. Wearing Uncomfortable Shoes

As I mentioned above, you shouldn’t be afraid of taking the subway in New York!

But my personal favorite way of getting around the city is on foot. New York is very walkable, more than any other city in the United States, and you can get to many places on just your own two feet.

Because you’ll be doing a lot of walking in New York, you’ll want to make sure you have a comfortable pair of walking shoes. I recommend sneakers — even in the summer, I would never wear sandals walking around NYC because you just never know what’s on the streets.

If you’ll be visiting New York from December until March, you’ll definitely want a pair of water-resistant boots and some warm wool socks in case of snow, icy rain, or slush.

7. Not Leaving Manhattan

Finally, one of the biggest mistakes you can make in New York is not leaving Manhattan.

New York City is made up of five boroughs: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island. Manhattan is by far the most popular with visitors, but it’s worth getting off the beaten path.

If you have a limited amount of time in NYC, I would recommend spending at least half a day (or a full day) in Brooklyn. You can start off by walking across the Brooklyn Bridge from Manhattan and then stroll around the charming neighborhood of Brooklyn Heights before stopping for a bite to eat in the DUMBO neighborhood right along the waterfront.

In the summer, Coney Island is also a great destination in Brooklyn to visit. This seaside neighborhood has an old-school amusement park, a boardwalk, and beaches.

These Are 4 Of The Safest Tourist Destinations In Mexico Right Now

Despite the fact that very few tourists are affected by crime when vacationing South of the border, safety remains a major concern for Americans who plan trips to Mexico, who are bombarded, time and again, by mainstream media sensationalism.

While there’s no denying Mexico has many problems, like every other country, including the United States, it is in reality pretty low-risk compared to other Latin American destinations, and the latest INEGI-backed research is helping debunk some decades-old misconceptions.

INEGI is Mexico’s National Institute of Statistics and Geography, and as customary every three months, they surveyed Mexican townspeople on their perception of safety in their own cities, and at least four of the country’s top tourist hotspots ranked as some of the safest:

Los Cabos, Baja California Sur

A dual township including the resort zones of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose Del Cabo, the Mexican Pacific ‘Capes’ is officially considered a low-risk destination, with only 23.2% of residents reporting feeling unsafe, a far lower percentage than your average large U.S. destination.

For years now, Los Cabos has managed to keep crime levels largely under control, in stark contrast with other gang-dominated municipalities in the Northern half of the Baja California Peninsula, and it’s taken no chances when it comes to ensuring tourist hotspots stay violence-free.

From increasing police presence in Downtown Cabo to intensifying patrolling on roads, authorities are working hard to safeguard their hard-earned Level 2 badge of honor, as awarded by U.S. authorities, and this is reflected in the general populace’s positive views.

La Paz, Baja California Sur

Seeing that only 22.4% of residents state they feel unsafe in their own community, the lesser-known, charming-all-the-same La Paz has one of the highest safety perceptions in Mexico.

With the verdant parks, quaint Old Town and judging by its own name, how could it be any different?

This is one of the most traditional municipios in Baja California Sur, and somewhere you go to experience some of that hardcore paisa culture. Many of the buildings date back to the 19th century or earlier, the cuisine is an absolute marvel, and local hospitality is unmatched.

Additionally, the high concentration of laid-back beach bars and lush gardens help create a more welcoming environment, and though we wouldn’t recommend you let your guard down anywhere touristy, you should know the single greatest threat tourists face here is pickpocketing in Malecon Road.

Merida, Yucatan

Often dubbed the safest state capital in Mexico, a status upheld by Washington itself, which considers the state of Campeche a Level 1 destination, it’s no surprise Merida makes an appearance on this list with close to 78% of locals finding it safe to live in.

Best known for its invaluable architectural heritage, with Spanish shrines and a walled city dating back to the period of Spanish colonization, one of two left standing in the American continent, Merida has a significantly lower crime rate than the national average of Mexico.

Based on the Mexico Crime Index, Merida has fewer drug killings, kidnappings, and other forms of violence compared to most Mexican cities, and as for the overall homicide rate, it is a nearly negligible 0.3 per 100,000 residents.

Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco

It may be surprising to some to see that Puerto Vallarta ranks the highest, considering the state of Jalisco has a reputation for being ravaged by gang violence, and the U.S. State Department urges Americans to ‘reconsider’ travel.

Only 19.4% of inhabitants paint a grim picture of life in Vallarta, making it the safest beach town in Mexico, with instances where tourists fell victim to violence or petty theft being increasingly less common and resort areas being generally considered an oasis of tranquility.

Does this mean the U.S. travel advice should be entirely dismissed, or that it is wrong? Not at all: the Level 3 is a blanket warning applying to the whole of Jalisco, not Puerto Vallarta specifically, and you should know crime levels can vary drastically between municipalities.

Americans should maintain a higher level of situational awareness when visiting other towns in Jalisco, particularly further inland, but Puerto Vallarta, as well as its neighboring Riviera Nayarit, are not, statistically speaking, any riskier than Los Cabos or Cancun.

After a wildly successful summer, Turkey is reveling in its reputation as an international hotspot that tourists just can’t seem to get enough of.

One of the country’s most coveted destinations, Cappadocia, just broke its all-time tourism record, hosting over 3,000,000 tourists in the past eight months alone.

In comparison, the previous record was set in 2022, when 2.5 million tourists visited the Turkish region from January to August.

So, what’s making travelers flock to Cappadocia in record numbers?

Unearthly Landscapes and Fairy Chimneys

The landscapes in Cappadocia are truly otherworldly, featuring thousands of soft, cone-shaped rock formations usually known as fairy chimneys.

These stunning natural wonders have been sculpted over millions of years through erosion and volcanic activity, resulting in a surreal terrain that looks like it belongs in a fantasy novel.

Some even describe the landscape as what they imagine Mars or another neighboring planet to look like, as there simply isn’t anything else like it on Earth.

While similarly-shaped formations, like hoodoos, can be found in other places in the world, the term “fairy chimney” is generally used to refer to the specific shapes and nature of the natural structures found in Cappadocia, Turkey – that’s just how one-of-a-kind they are.

If that’s not enough to convince you to plan your next sightseeing trip here, the formations are further complemented by the ancient cave dwellings and churches carved into the soft tuff rock.

The best way to experience the entire surreal landscape of Cappadocia is to embark on one of the many hiking trails in the area; however, make sure to research a route you feel comfortable tackling.

After all, you won’t have much breath left to spare after witnessing the jaw-dropping views.

Rich Historical and Cultural Heritage

The region where modern-day Cappadocia is located is believed to have formed over 60 million years ago, giving winds, erosion, and volcanic eruptions just enough time to form the majestic landscape we can marvel at today.

However, the abundant natural wonders are far from the only historical heritage the region has managed to hold onto.

Cappadocia has long been a center of civilization, homing some of history’s most well-known societies, including the Hittites, Persians, Romans, Byzantines, and Ottomans.

The wonderfully diverse cultural heritage is apparent in the numerous historical attractions you’ll find in the area, including rock-cut churches, unique frescoes, and the fascinating underground cities that dot the entire region.

If you’re ever in the area, though, your first order of business should be a visit to the Göreme Open-Air Museum, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that features everything we’ve talked about so far and more.

Hot Air Ballooning Over Cappadocia’s Skies

Upon reading the word “Cappadocia,” chances are your mind immediately went to the hot ballon-filled skies you’ve seen in hundreds of Instagram pictures.

The reason why the region is so heavily associated with hot air balloons is the fact that both the landscape and the weather make for the perfect setting for a serene ride through the Turkish skies.

However, it’s worth noting that Cappadocia will rarely look like the pictures you’ve seen online – that is, unless you time your visit carefully enough.

Most hot air balloon rides take place from April to November, as that’s when weather conditions are most favorable.

In July, you’ll be able to experience the stunning Balloon Fest Cappadocia, an event that spans four days and honors the region’s prized tradition.

During these days, the sky is filled with hundreds of balloons that create the jaw-dropping panorama we’ve come to expect from Cappadocia, and, best of all – the event is entirely free!

Unique Cave Accommodations

One of the features that sets Cappadocia apart from other historical hotspots is the fact that you won’t only get to see the carved churches and underground cities during your sightseeing trips, but you’ll also get to experience staying at a cave hotel or suite yourself!

The area is filled with charming, unique accommodation options that are carved directly into the soft rock that comprises the very landscape you’ll be fawning over throughout your trip.

Make no mistake, the rooms are filled with all the modern amenities you might expect from a hotel, with the added bonus of having access to stunning panoramic terraces.

Culinary Delights and Local Experiences

No trip to Turkey is complete without a run-through of local dishes and delicacies.

Travel has exploded in the last year and shows no signs of stopping. People are constantly on the lookout for the next trendy spot to visit so they can experience it before it’s too mainstream.

Luckily for travelers, the world is a big place! There will always be places to go that are more off-path, but there is one in Latin America you should visit soon before the secret is out – El Salvador.

A gorgeous country on the Pacific in Central America, El Salvador is attracting tourists from all over with its stunning beaches, affordable prices, welcoming people, and incredible landscapes.

But why should you travel to El Salvador now?

It’s Safe

Firstly, let’s address the elephant in the room. When I told family and friends we were heading to El Salvador, the very first question I was asked was whether or not it would be safe to visit.

The short answer? Yes.

As a tourist in El Salvador, you will be one of the safest people in the country. Tourism is heavily protected in the country, and if you are sticking to well-known tourist areas and guided tours you have absolutely nothing to worry about.

If you do venture a bit more off-the-beaten-path on your own, just be sure to follow general safety advice as you would anywhere else while traveling and you will be fine.

The State Department currently has El Salvador listed as a Level 3: Reconsider Travel country due to crime. However, all the crime listed rarely affects tourists, and travelers looking to vacation in the country have nothing to worry about.

Off Path Yet Welcoming

While El Salvador may not be the first place to come to mind when you think about a tropical vacation, you should definitely move it up your mental list of places to go.

It is off-path enough that it feels like you are going on an epic and unique adventure (you are) but welcoming and accessible enough that you will feel right at home enjoying the black-sand beaches of this gorgeous slice of Central America.

Check-in was a breeze and we were quickly whisked away to our incredible Treehouse, where we instantly fell in love with El Salvador’s coast. Aside from the incredible room, having the NAWI Beach House right next door made it so easy to enjoy drinks by the pool, eat delicious food, and enjoy the music at night. When we felt like exploring, MIZATA had an activities board that we could reference to see what kinds of adventures we could have.

We highly suggest surfing, horseback riding, and checking out the Tamanique Waterfalls. If you’ve never been surfing or riding, don’t worry; MIZATA has people who can teach you how to do both!

Accessible

Getting to El Salvador is easier than ever. As the destination continues to grow in popularity, more direct flights will surely follow.

Stunning Beaches & Incredible Activities

El Salvador isn’t the biggest country, but it still boasts nearly 200 miles of coastline! Along the coast you can find gorgeous beach after gorgeous beach.

You can’t drive too far along the coast without stumbling upon another stunning stretch of sand, but our favorite was definitely Playa Mizata since it was right outside our room at our resort. The volcanic sand is absolutely gorgeous during sunset, and the waves are perfect for surfing.

Surfing with MIZATA

We booked a lesson through MIZATA, and it was our first time ever trying to surf. Our instructor was fantastic and we were able to stand up on our first lesson!

Horseback Riding with MIZATA

One of our favorite activities we were able to book through MIZATA was definitely the horseback ride. We were able to mount up right at the resort and ride around the area to take everything in from a unique perspective.

Our horses were super responsive, and you could tell they enjoyed the ride just as much as we did!

If riding isn’t your thing but you still want to test it out, you can take an easy ride down the beach while your horse is on a lead. Once you get to the end you can pause to get the perfect shot for your followers.

ATV Adventures

El Salvador is beautiful at every turn. Yes, the ocean and the beaches are amazing, but so is the rest of the country!

Heading further inland will offer travelers another chance to see just how gorgeous El Salvador truly is.

For a really fun way to take it all in, we booked an ATV day trip through MIZATA. The ride to get there was only about 25 minutes, and then we were zipping through the mountain on our ATVs in no time.

Tamanique Waterfalls

Like to hike? This is the excursion for you.

Once again, this amazing day was booked right at MIZATA and we were able to enjoy it without having to plan anything ourselves.

Make sure you wear your hiking shoes and bring a swimsuit because you will be scaling a mountain and getting wet.

The hike down to the waterfalls is gorgeous by itself, but just wait until you see the falls!

The water is refreshing and you’ll be glad you made the hike when you look back at your amazing pictures later on.

Once you’ve enjoyed cooling off a bit, don’t forget to get a couple of cliff jumps in before heading back!

Turkey has been one of the hottest destinations of the year. It may be on the opposite side of the globe, but that hasn’t stopped travelers from visiting.

In all likelihood, your first stop is the immaculate city of Istanbul. What a place! Half Asia and half Europe, this one-of-a-kind destination will overfill your sense of wanderlust.

Istanbul may be the main draw, but there is so much more. Another city gaining popularity is the gorgeous coastal resort city of Antalya.

Located on the pristine blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea, the secret is out. However, that’s not the only coastal destination that should be on travelers’ radar.

There are a pair of waterfront cities destined to become the next tourist hotspots of Turkey. In fact, there is a campaign to make it happen.

The cities of Rize and Samsun are being promoted as prime destinations for those seeking a newfound sense of Turkish culture, scenic views, and the ultimate off-path beach escape.

The Black Sea Has Already Been A Tourism Hotspot

The hot weather of summer naturally makes us want to find the best beach getaways. To some, they choose to stay close to home. Others want to scratch their travel itch and venture across the globe.

Turkey has been a hotspot for tourism all year, but the Black Sea has seen its own set of tourists with record-setting numbers for its beautiful resort towns.

The Black Sea is not limited to Turkey; it covers a lot of ground. Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova, and Georgia also hold title to prime coastal real estate here.

Not to mention Ukraine and Russia, but tourists aren’t exactly taking advantage of the coastline in these neighboring countries for obvious reasons.

Turkey, however, has taken note of the influx of travelers and wants to promote and develop what they believe are the next tourist destinations.

Samsun

The word “Samsun” translates to “port” in English. That’s fitting given the city’s notoriety. The narrative is going to change, according to Mehmet Nuri Ersoy, Turkey’s Minister of Culture and Tourism.

The goal is for Samsun to become a mainstream tourist destination. With the stunning scenery, the only surprise is why it’s not already a top destination.

“Together with our Governor, our municipality, our deputies, we will prepare this master plan. Our Ministry will fully support its development, and subsequently, the respective institutions will swiftly execute their roles,” said Mehmet Nuri Ersoy, Turkey’s Minister of Culture and Tourism

Mr. Ersoy continued, “The Black Sea is already a significant tourism destination, especially attracting many visitors from Gulf countries. Our aim is to distribute these concentrated visits to other Black Sea cities such as Samsun and Rize.”

Samsun is far beyond what you see looking out at the vast sea. There are multiple archeological sites to visit, a thriving culinary scene, jaw-dropping mountains and a potential tourism season lasting as many as 4 months.

This city already has a head start with familiar waterfront hotels, such as Wyndham and Sheraton.

Rize

In Rize, many would say the spectacular nature is unspoiled. There are not many places left with such characteristics. Take the mountain town of Çamlıhemşin, for example.

Here, there are untouched rolling green hills perfect for a tranquil getaway. To those who love to disconnect, there may be no better place than Rize.

At least for now. It’s not a popular destination yet, but tourism officials in Turkey intend to change that. In fact, the Minister of Culture and Tourism was also quoted as saying:

“Our goal is to achieve a revenue of 100 billion dollars from tourism. To reach this, relying on current popular tourism destinations isn’t feasible. We aim for every one of our 81 provinces to benefit from tourism.”

Time seems to stand still in Rize as it currently stands. It may be a coastal city, but it would be hard-pressed to ignore it’s stunning mountains.

This wholesome region of Turkey brings a sense of true Turkish culture of the simple life with a heightened sense of appreciation for nature.

Other than the picturesque coastline with waterfront hotels, one of the main draws is the Zilkale Castle- a centuries-old landmark overlooking the breathtaking views of this tranquil region of Turkey.

Tourists can indulge in traditional Turkish tea and cuisine while immersing themselves in a true untouched gem.

Having reached close to 15 million guests registered between January and July 16, and over 588 billion baht, or $17.11 billion in revenue, as confirmed by the Tourism Ministry, it is perhaps Southeast Asia’s most sought-after and successful hub.

Thailand is far from being the region’s only appealing destination, with nations like Vietnam boasting 3,260 km of a pristine coastline bounded by an azure East Sea, and Singapore, Malaysia, and the like consistently ranking as two of the most diverse and developed states in the group.

Recently, Vietnam also eased its visa requirements, while Malaysia launched an easy-to-apply residency permit for digital nomads, thus increasing competition among Southeast Asian nations.

So why is Thailand still a regional leader, and what exactly does it have to offer compared to its counterparts?

Nonstop Flights

First of all, Thailand has been slowly reinstating its once-severed ties to North America, with new nonstop flights announced for the first time in a decade.

This makes it easier for North Americans to reach Thailand without resorting to long layovers in third countries.

AirCanada’s new direct service linking Vancouver International to Bangkok, the bustling capital of Thailand, has been bringing residents of Canada’s West Coast closer to the paradisaical destination since launching in early 2022, and it’s already a major success.

Though there are no US-Thailand flights as of yet, the Canadian route is already a major step towards strengthening ties between both subcontinents, and it’s certainly contributed to the Asian kingdom’s recovery, as well as increased competitiveness.

It Is Affordable

Thailand is also a lot cheaper than some of the most developed Southeast Asian countries, particularly Singapore, where the cost of living is equivalent to the Western World’s or even higher.

Though they are part of the same union of countries, Thailand can be a lot cheaper, owing to a weaker currency, as the Thai baht is a lot less powerful than the U.S. or Canadian dollar, and the availability of fresh food and services at reduced prices.

According to Numbeo, consumer prices in Chiang Mai, Thailand’s second-largest, and perhaps its most traditional city, and a tourist favorite, consumer prices are up to 51.2% lower than in Vancouver, Canada, while restaurant bills can be up to 79.3% cheaper.

Even Phuket, Thailand’s number one beach destination and its trendiest island, often perceived as the most expensive vacation hotspot in the country, can be up to 45.4% less expensive than a Western destination, meaning your tourist dollars stretch much further here.

It Stays On Top Of Trends

Thailand has ensured it stays on top of all of the latest travel trends, and that’s partly why it’s risen to prominence lately.

From investment in wellness to the opening of new migration routes for temporary residents and digital workers, it is reinventing itself as a more modern, open state.

Having realized long-term tourists boost the local economy and help the country achieve its sustainable tourism goals, local authorities have been actively promoting ‘slow’ travel and making it easier for them to apply for residency visas.

Additionally, it is placing nature at the front of the campaign through its numerous relaxation retreats and spa centers, nestled in verdant reserves and surrounded by nature.

This widely-lauded move is set to attract wellness seekers who deliberately avoided Thailand due to its reputation as a party destination.

Thailand Is More Liberal

Finally, Thailand has a more liberal approach toward the commercialization of psychoactive drugs than its Southeast Asian partners do.

For instance, it lifted a ban on medicinal cannabis in 2022, becoming the first in the subcontinent to do so.

Now, you can buy reasonable amounts of cannabis-based products across Thailand as long as you report usage for a health-related purpose. This sets Thailand apart from the likes of Malaysia and Indonesia, where laws are much harsher.

The nightlife in Thailand is much more liberal as well, particularly in Bangkok, the island of Phuket, and the beach zone in Pattaya, where adult entertainment venues are allowed to operate when fulfilling certain conditions, and attitudes towards sexuality are very permissive.

Thailand is affordable, fun, and trendy to visit, and we can definitely see it rising to the top of the world tourism charts in the months to come as it continues to invest in the sector and promote gorgeous lesser-known gems Westerners may not have heard of yet.

Europe is the world’s favorite tourist playground. Famous for its medieval citadels, cobblestone streets, and History spanning several millennia, it is called the ‘Old World’ for a reason.

When visiting Europe, tourists are often in search of some of that ancient charm, and though the 44 country-strong continent has no shortage of natural and manmade wonders, for decades on end, it was mostly countries like Spain, Italy, and France that dominated booking trends.

While the traditional ‘West’ continues to lead booking trends, a lesser-visited nation belonging to the Eastern half is rising to prominence as the next tourist hotspot, much to the surprise of the Mediterranean subgroup:

Is Poland Europe’s Next Tourist Hotspot?

Poland is surely no obscure, poorly-promoted Balkan country that remained sealed off for years, but there’s no denying it lags behind its Western counterparts when it comes to international tourism.

Don’t get us wrong: Poland’s numbers are on the up, with up to 15.9 million tourists registered in 2022, when the country was yet to fully recover from the COVID slump, but they do pale in comparison to Spain’s or Italy’s, the latter of which hosted 71 million.

With that being said, Poland’s recovery rate is nothing short of impressive, with an estimated 48.5% year-on-year growth over 2021. In order to surpass its pre-pandemic figures, the country must attract only over 5 million visitors more in 2023, and it looks like it’s on track to do just so.

In the first yearly quarter, it had hosted already as many as 7 million guests, and the summer figures are not even in yet. So what is it about Poland that seems to be a source of fascination to so many travelers when they could be visiting the Colosseum in Rome, or the Sagrada Familia Basilica instead?

Poland Is Not As Unbearably Hot

First of all, Poland is not a Mediterranean country, and while that may sound like a weakness, particularly amid the ongoing sunny holiday frenzy, the Med is getting unbearably hotter each passing year.

This year, fires ravaged a number of Greek islands, as well as France’s Cote d’Azur, and numerous coastal areas in Southern Spain, with temperatures soaring past 90 degrees, and wildfires starting with little to no warning.

In Rhodes, an island in the Dodecanese in Greece, tourists had to be evacuated as the whole landscape was set ablaze amid the overwheming heat, with as many as 8,000 guests having their vacations ruined due to the scorching sun.

Poland does get warm over summer, enjoying long, balmy hours of sunlight and high temperatures, but it is certainly not as hot as Southern Europe, even though it also has beaches, and a natural wealth just as diverse.

Instead of the Mediterranean, Poland has a shoreline on the Baltic Sea, which it shares with countries like Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and the Nordic subgroup.

It is definitely not the ideal vacation spot if you’re looking for Greece’s turquoise-blue ocean and warm waters, but Baltic beaches do get relatively warm in the summer and fall months, and if not for swimming, they make for great sunbathing spots.

Plus, the risk of fires is very low, if not inexistent, seeing that Poland is naturally colder.

Tourists are not only looking for beaches when they holiday in Poland, though it does have 770 kilometers of coastline, mostly sandy, just awaiting discovery.

You may spend a day or two basking in the sun in Sopot, the country’s main resort town on the Baltic Sea, but the main attractions lie elsewhere.

An Undiscovered Medieval Heritage

Poland is best known for its majestic, mountainous nature, unique folklore, and fascinating History, with natural parks that extend for miles on end, and cities that date back centuries.

According to The Telegraph, Hel, a sandy peninsula north of Gdansk, Poland’s busiest Baltic port, is ‘an unlikely slice of beach holiday heaven in sunny Poland‘, with readers picking this secret location as one of their favorites in the country.

Warsaw, the metropolitan Polish capital, was also voted a ‘Best European Destination‘ in 2023, owing it to its riotous nightlife, charming, post-War reconstructed downtown district, almost hidden amidst a skyscraper-dotted skyline, Brutalist heritage, and World War II vestiges.

Krakow, traditionally seen as Poland’s cultural capital, has been time and again elected Europe’s best city break by Which?, a consumer association based in the U.K.

Krakow is one of Poland’s best-preserved medieval cities, housing a beautiful pedestrianized central square, bounded by a medieval cathedral and other historical buildings, world-class museums chronicling Jewish History during the war years, and the fairytale Wawel Castle.

Within driving distance of Krakow, tourists can explore some of Europe’s largest salt mines, as well as delve deeper into the continent’s dark past by participating in organized visits to former concentration camps, now memorials, of Auschwitz and Birkenau.

Other beautiful cities include the aforementioned Gdansk, with its colorful houses and red-tile roofs, the beautiful Wroclaw, and Torun, a city on the shores of the landmark Vistula River and a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognized for its value as a medieval settlement.

Where Is Poland Headed Next?

Poland may still have a lot of ground to cover to catch up with its Western European counterparts, having registered an all-time peak of 18.7 million tourist overnights in 2019, the reference pre-pandemic year, but it is slowly, and surely getting there, especially now that prices in the West have skyrocketed and it is being engulfed by mass tourism.

Despite being a member of the European Union, Poland is not yet part of the Eurozone, and the local currency, the Polish zloty, is historically weaker against the euro, the dollar, and the British pound, making Poland far more attractive than the Mediterranean South.

Travelers are frequently opting for cheaper vacations that are not so crowded, and Poland easily fulfills that criteria.

In Europe, it is the 13th most-visited country based on tourist overnights (and climbing). So far, the number one spot belongs to Spain (299 million), followed by Italy (221 million), France (136 million), and Greece (120 million).

With over 800 acres to explore, New York City’s famous Central Park is clearly a huge draw for tourists and locals alike. Over 150 years old, open every day, and with free entry (it’s a park after all), there really is no reason not to include a wander around Central Park on your visit to New York City.

5. The National WWII Museum, Louisiana

Featuring immersive and educational exhibits, New Orleans’s best tourist attraction is one not to miss. Some countries on this list require simple visas with a quick online application process, while others are more drawn out and require a visit to the country’s embassy or consulate.

1. Brazil

Beginning October 1, Brazil will require a visa for American travelers.

In 2019, the visa requirement was removed in an effort to boost tourism, but unfortunately, it is now returning. However, it’s expected that an electronic visa application will be introduced to simplify the process rather than requiring travelers to visit a Brazilian embassy or consulate.
