Though there’s no official launch date for the train, our sources confirm ‘as early as Spring 2026′ to hopefully line up perfectly with this event.

Otherwise, you can stick to the classics and still have a grand ol’ time flipping the pages back through a pastime era, where Stirling Castle was the key to Scotland’s throne and church bells of the Holy Rude echoed down below to one of the UK’s most vibrant Old Towns — all still standing the test of time and open to visit.

Of course, a visit to such a storied city wouldn’t be right without stepping foot into a traditional pub to grab a local pint.

The Settle Inn is Stirling’s ‘oldest alehouse’, holding rave reviews and reasonable prices for such a popular community staple.

Plus, you might want to be a little loosey-goosey visiting some of Stirling’s grim attractions like the Beheading Stone, a literal chopping block for treasonous citizens, dating back to medieval times.

Fall Starts Early In Bemidji, Minnesota

Minnesotans may sound funny pronouncing their own state, but this hidden gem is no laughing matter. If you’re chomping at the bit ready to immerse in autumn’s glory, stop planning months ahead to visit other destinations’ peak leaf-peeping season.

Bemidji said goodbye to summer already while much of the nation is in the awkward phase of not knowing if it’s the tail-end of summer or the beginning of fall.

Already beginning to shed pine needles and see lush green forestry, it transforms into a variety of burnished fall tones, this town is already beginning to glow like a postcard.

The best time to visit Bemidji solely for the best photo-ops is now to mid-October, as winter vibes arrive earlier than most in comparison.

Bemidji is home to rightfully named Lake Bemidji, a glacially formed lake sourced by the flowing Mississippi River — and this is hands down the best spot to enjoy luminous foliage with a variety of activities.

Welcome To Lake Bemidji State Park

In Hilton’s own words, “The lake itself is equally alluring as a headwater for the Mississippi River”.

Lake Bemidji State Park not only exudes quintessential fall charm with its natural curtain of autumnal hues, but it’s also a year-round getaway to enjoy the outdoors.

Yep, even in the throes of winter, this lush state park offers those willing to brave the winter chills with groomed cross-country ski trails, snowshoeing and snowmobiling, and cozy, heated cabins when warm, velvety cups of PSLs won’t quite do the trick.

Fall, though, sees all-but-empty trailheads, mirror-still water, and the same cabins (but you may not need the heater), though there are ample campsites available too, with free wifi so you can upload your epic pics right away.

Hilton recommends the following activities during the fall:
- Rent a bike and ride the shores
- Go wildlife spotting (be aware of black bears!)
- Paddle the calm lake in a kayak or canoe
- Fish for walleye and muskellunge
Most notably, there’s also the popular 115-mile-long Paul Bunyan State Trail (hence the flannel vibes), offering a seemingly endless maze of trails deep into the towering woodlands.

Where To Eat & Stay

It goes without saying, in most cases small towns equate to incredible eats. Another unknown fact about Bemidji is that it’s an underrated college town, home to Bemidji State University — and you know how most students spend their weekends.

I mean, with the surge of AI, is anyone really doing homework anymore?

There are fun bars dotting the small townscape, some with more college vibes than others. A good middle ground for 30-somethings grasping onto every last ounce of youth like me is Bemidji Brewing, holding a near-perfect Google rating.

Plus, does anything go better together than a scenic fall hike, a checkered flannel, and a local craft brewskie? Negative.

But perhaps the best place to fuel back up after a fun-filled day spent outdoors is Tutto Bene, serving made-from-scratch Italian cuisine and an impressive selection of wine.

As for where to stay, of course, Hilton is going to mention their own DoubleTree Hotel Bemidji, but it is Bemidji’s top-rated hotel on TripAdvisor.

This Laid-Back Beach Town Named Florida’s Top Fall Getaway

If sunshine is on your mind, there’s no better state to visit than Florida. No matter the time of year, the rightfully named “Sunshine State” provides paradise shores wrapping the Gulf, the speckled Keys, and up and down the Atlantic, all with their own unique flair.

If fall foliage and campfires are your jam this season, well, Florida might not be for you along the coast.

If you’re the type that wants to keep your checkered flannel tucked away for a rainy day, then there’s no question we have the place for you.

Boasting less crowds, sun-drenched shores, and a way more relaxing vibe than nearby Miami, the experts at Southern Living recently named one unsuspecting city as the state’s top fall getaway.

Just north of Fort Lauderdale lies Boca Raton, a laid-back beach town to escape the hordes of leaf-peepers seeking out the perfect photo-op in neighboring states.

Prime Location

Close enough but not too far from the city bustle, Boca Raton is a well-balanced hideaway. After all, there’s a reason so many retirees flock here to close out their golden years.

You can fly into either West Palm Beach (PBI), Fort Lauderdale (FLL) or Miami (MIA) and make your way to the Brightline train to Boca Raton, reaching this low-key haven of welcoming locals and beautiful shores in a jiffy.

Most fall trips are short but sweet since PTO is typically maxed out during summer, and the kiddos have to go back to class.

That makes vacationing here even more attractive. Southern Living states “The Boca Raton (a luxe resort) is recently renovated and perfect for a weekend getaway (or longer)”.

Upscale, Yet Laid-Back

Boca Raton’s namesake resort isn’t the only option to splurge on yourself. Being so close to Miami, opulence trickles in.

There are world-class spas such as holistic- minded Skin Apeel Day Spa, who’ve been in business for 30 years and impressively hold a perfect Google rating.

There’s also an array of upscale restaurants to treat yourself. Recents patrons visiting downtown Boca’s Le Sorelle Restaurant describe this Italian soiree as “exquisite”.

If you prefer a more intimate setting, Six Tables a Restaurant has, you guessed it, only 6 tables. Obviously, reservations go quick.

Those who’ve scored a seat simply say it’s a “phenomenal experience” and “great for intimate dinners”.

Of course, there’s also the yacht aspect. Like Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton shares a maze of waterways.

Maybe cozy up at a local bar and befriend the old guy in flip-flops. You never know who’s living their best life on their pension.

Boca Raton’s Top Beaches

Boca Raton’s population exceeds the 100,000 benchmark. It’s not a map-dot town with one beach everyone flocks to — you have plentiful options here.

Most notably, Red Reef Park is an expensive park to lounge under swaying palms or tap into your adventurous side by snorkeling the pristine waters to witness the vibrant coral reefs.

Not to be confused with Miami’s most sought-after beach locale, South Beach Park is a family-friendly beach with gleaming white sand, a playground, and daily lifeguard presence.

Spanish River Park is the one beach that might catch you by surprise considering its location splitting the intracoastal and Atlantic.

Holding rave reviews and earning a coveted Blue Flag certification, Spanish River Park is Boca Raton’s crown jewel for perfect beach days.

Of course, locals always have their secret spots too, and Boca Raton is known for being very friendly.

Though, I have a feeling Gumbo Limbo Nature Center will make the cut, especially if you’re a wildlife enthusiast, and they may also mention an Uber hack — take the BocaConnect shuttle where no ride costs more than $5.

So Long, Humidity & Crowds

If you visit Boca Raton in fall, you’re in for a treat. There’s plenty of room to sprawl out on any aforementioned beach as it’s mostly retirees, born-and-raised locals, and few tourists escaping Miami’s hustle and bustle.

Best of all, Florida’s notorious humidity slowly subsides in the coming months, making the weather so much more enjoyable, where you don’t have to bug spray and worry about your unsightly pit stains in vacation photos.

Right now, expect some 90-degree days to pop up, but by the time Thanksgiving rolls around, temps are more tolerable in the high 70s to low 80’s on average.

Do know that “hurricane season” is in effect until the tail end of November.

Charleston is magnificent to visit year-round, but even as trees begin to change, travel experts at Southern Living don’t believe it’s South Carolina’s most beautiful fall getaway.

At Travel Off Path, we realize we can’t showcase every single map-dot town transforming into a postcard this year, but this one is truly worth it.

Let’s be real — few lake towns are going to be a worthwhile visit come winter, given the chilly temps and limited activities to enjoy yourself in the cold.

Fall is the last hurrah for 2025 to visit this lesser-known hideaway boasting over 300 miles of scenic shoreline, backdropped by a natural curtain of vibrant, lush forestry.

If you’re seeking a relaxing getaway to recharge in unmatched serenity, look no further than the small town of Seneca, home to postcard-worthy Lake Keowee.

Seneca’s Small Town Charm

One glance at Seneca’s Historic District, and you’ll be hooked.

It feels criminal how a town as picturesque and welcoming as Seneca isn’t hyped up more.

The town has undergone a bit of a makeover, with new businesses popping up, especially along the main drag known as Ram Cat Alley, lined with a row of rejuvenated old-timey buildings.

Despite some modern flair, there are still many timeless aspects that are sure to captivate you, such as numerous museums that offer a deep dive into local history.

Located downtown, you’ll find the Lunney Museum and the Bertha Lee Strickland Cultural Museum — both with rave reviews.

Standing the test of time for nearly 200 years, the Old Pickens Church is a must-visit too. Though it’s a bit of a trek to reach from downtown, it is set along the tranquil Keowee River.

As you know, the South tends to have a formula that goes like this: Southern charm + historic streets = savory, down-home eats.

But, Seneca breaks the rules. Yes, there are your usual Southern staples, but also more international offerings than you’d expect for a town of just 9,000 residents.

The most popular hangout has gotta be the Main Street Diner, an Americana classic, but don’t sleep on the quality of tacos from the Alazan Taco Truck either.

Lake Keowee: South Carolina’s ‘Best Place’ For Fall Foliage

Lake Keowee takes the crown as Southern Living’s top rec in South Carolina for an autumn immersion. Bypassing honorable mention, Poinsett Bridge is a true getaway, rather than a landmark. Lake Keowee offers visitors a variety of rustic cabins from bare bones to affordable luxury.

Within the vast Lake Keowee region, you’ll find Keowee-Toxaway State Park, where you reserve an upscale 3-bedroom villa (and Fido is allowed to!).

Airbnb and its rival platforms have some awesome stays listed too, many of which are under $200.

The lake sees mild weather until December, so there’s no need to rush your travel plans. Even then, the area turns into a festive winter wonderland, drawing a crowd for the annual Christmas parade.

For fall, temps are still pleasant enough for an afternoon swim and paddleboard or kayak ride, or to simply enjoy a nice beach day in a quiet spot along the hundreds of miles of shoreline.

But if you find the water more brisk than a cheap iced tea, another popular activity is to rent a pontoon boat from the marina — and gas is free!

For the best photo-ops, you’ll already begin to see colorful hues sprinkled in the towering trees, but peak leaf-peeping is from late October to the first week of November.

Best Way To Reach Seneca

Seneca is nestled in South Carolina’s Blue Ridge foothills, so you know it makes for an epic road trip.

Otherwise, your best bet is to fly into nearby Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (GSP), roughly an hour or so from Seneca.

If you’re really up for an adventure, you could also hop aboard an Amtrak train to Clemson, a buzzing college town about 15 minutes away.

To make the most of your trip, it is best to rent a car. A ride around the stunning lake itself is worth the journey.

Move Over Denver! This Lively Mountain Town Should Be Your Next Colorado Adventure

Is Denver really that great? I gotta say, I’ve been to 30 countries and some were pretty sketchy, but the only place I’ve been attacked in broad daylight is the ‘Mile High City’.

While this is quite unlikely to happen to you, as Denver is generally considered safe, it begs the question of whether the city is all it’s cracked up to be.

Well, turns out I’m not the only one who thinks Denver is a bit overhyped. The folks over at Thrillist are hyping up another mountainous Colorado city nearby.

Going as far to say it’s Colorado’s ‘Best City’, Boulder is ready to welcome anyone and everyone in this lively, free-spirited town roughly half an hour away.

More Than A College Town

First and foremost, Boulder’s claim to fame is the University of Colorado, even more so as Hall of Fame NFL player Deion Sanders has recently taken the helm as Head Coach.

The town is buzzing about its football team, but to be honest, it’s buzzing all the time simply because it’s a fun place to visit.

While, yes, you will see your fair share of college students out and about, it’s not the type of place where you’ll be side-eyed at the bar as if other patrons are telepathically telling you “you’re too old!”.

Boulder is known for its free spirit and welcoming community hence becoming a booming arts hub sparked by the town’s creative minds.

Aside from galleries and museums, downtown is also where you’ll find most of the action, including Pearl Street Mall, a pedestrian-only promenade similar to Denver’s 16th Street Mall, but smaller of course.

Tip: No need to Uber around town with Boulder’s cheap HOP bus covering the most popular areas for just $3 per ride.

A Thriving Food And Beer Scene

Leave the sugar-coating to Boulder’s tasty bakeries, but there’s no need to hide Boulder’s hippie vibes; they embrace it!

Expect to find a healthy dose of farm-to-table offerings throughout town, from busy farmers markets to top-rated restaurants such as Bramble & Hare.

Boulder has something for every palate, not just the health conscious. Just keep in mind when hunger pangs strike that Boulder is lovely to enjoy outside, which is why many opt for a food truck for a quick bite.

But, where Denver has the fiercest competition is its bustling beer scene, with over a dozen breweries in close reach.

You may be tempted to grab the can where the mountains turn blue, but Boulder’s local brews are the way to go (apologies to Sam Elliott).

There’s just something about mountains and beer that go hand in hand and Boulder is just the place!

Tip: One of the most beloved breweries in town is The Sanitas Brewing Company, located on the outskirts of town with great mountain views and wide selection of craft brewskies.

A Gateway To Astounding Natural Sites

Boulder’s wondrous nature never seems to end, but that’s all the more reason to keep coming back, and that’s exactly what many visitors do.

It’s not just the CU alum coming back to sports games each season; it’s your run-of-the-mill travelers too.

Boulder’s town center is undeniably fun to visit, but outside the small cityscape is where the town shines brightest, sort of like how many prefer to go to Golden to look down on Denver rather than be in the hustle and bustle.

Here, however, there’s no need to escape. Boulder’s seemingly boundless nature is a world on its own, but super easy to access.

Equipped with ample hiking trails, with many favoring Royal Arch Trail, Mount Sanitas, and Flagstaff Loop the most, this region is an outdoor lover’s dream.

The famous Rocky Mountains appear a stone’s throw away, and many tourists love exploring Rocky Mountain National Park to get up close and personal with America’s most iconic mountain range.

While summer has come to a close, mark your calendars for next summer as one of the most relaxing ways to enjoy Boulder’s outdoorsy atmosphere is to float Boulder Creek.

Tip: For less crowds without sacrificing beauty, visit lesser-known Eldorado Canyon State Park nearby over Rocky Mountain National Park.

Charlotte may be the most popular gateway into North Carolina, but there are so many other towns you’ll be exuberantly ‘taking your shirt off and spinning it around like a helicopter’ for Petey Pablo-style!

Okay, let’s not do that actually.

What you can do is avoid Asheville’s crowds this fall by taking in the glorious sites of one lesser-known mountain town boasting untamed beauty and down-home charm.

While the trendy city of Cary has claimed the crown of NC’s new tourism hotspot, the lovely town of Hendersonville, just north of where the Carolinas meet, is the ultimate blissful escape to enjoy the state’s endless fall splendor.

Explore Henderson’s Down-Home Downtown District

You can say what you want about the South, but its famed hospitality is the real deal and seems to increase the more charming the town may be.

While places like Asheville are great to visit, seeing fewer Starbucks and more authentic mom-and-pop shops is undeniably more enticing, like a classic soda fountain like Mike’s on Main.

Downtown Hendersonville offers a surprising variety of local eateries, from savory Italian to southern home cooking, like the top-rated Daddy D’s Suber Soulfood. One recent patron exclaimed, “We love this place! Every time we are in the area, we make sure to add Daddy D’s to our itinerary.”

The old-timey streets are lined with delightful boutique shops, and there are a ton of museums to check out, like the Henderson County Heritage Museum, set inside a beautiful historic courthouse rivaling the looks of many state Capitol buildings.

The most captivating museum, however, may be Historic Johnson Farm.

Although set on the outskirts of town, this former tobacco farm boasts a mix of outdoor sublimity with an intriguing history.

Open year-round and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, take a hike through scenic forests and go on guided tours of the 10 historic 19th-century homes on-site for only $10.

Get Outside! Hendersonville Is Made For Exploring

Visiting Hendersonville, you can’t help but notice the town’s ambient mountains closing you in.

Don’t fret; however, this is no escape room; the popular Blue Ridge Mountains will welcome you with open arms.

Whether taking the picturesque back roads or going for a tranquil hike, the Blue Ridge Mountains are a sight to behold, particularly in the fall.

In the neighboring town of Laurel Park, Jump Off Rock is inarguably the most popular natural site offering a handful of hiking trails, but nothing too strenuous.

Just don’t take the name too seriously as Jump Off’s peak is 3,100 feet high hence the epic views of vibrant treetops and mountainous terrain.

You might be surprised by what else Hendersonville and the surrounding region have to offer – gorgeous waterfalls.

Hendersonville makes for a great base to explore North Carolina’s hidden gems away from the hustle and bustle of Charlotte and flannel-wearing hipster crowds of Asheville.

Beyond the small cityscape lies DuPont State Recreational Forest, home to more than a dozen waterfalls, but these are 5 of the most popular:

Savor The Fall Flavor

While your tastebuds will be fully satisfied visiting Downtown Hendersonville, there’s some other seasonal goodies visitors should be aware of.

If you’re the road trip type (who wouldn’t be in this area?), then set your sights for Chimney Rock Road where you’ll find apple orchards and pumpkin patches serving up all the fall delights, like Granddad’s Apples, fun for the whole family.

But the grown-ups may want to level up their fall game. Nearby is Saint Paul Mountain Farms, acting as both a vineyard and orchard, where they produce local wines, hard ciders, among other adult beverages.

As two of California’s most iconic cities find themselves in a self-induced dual of “which city is worse?”, one unheard-of itsy bitsy town has essentially been crowned the Golden State’s new tourism hotspot overnight.

We’ve also seen images of the famous Golden Gate Bridge and Hollywood sign, but nowadays, all news outlets show are filthy streets and crime statistics for San Francisco and L.A.

And given numerous San Diego beaches have often been riddled with sewage spewage, maybe it’s time to admit 2024 has been the “Year of the Small Town” for California getaways.

One such town is so small in fact, it really isn’t a town at all, rather an ‘unincorporated community’.

This blip on the map has slowly been gaining attention since the mid-90’s, but recently attracted mainstream eyes through the likes of Michelin Guide and Travel + Leisure.

If Northern California is in your plans, skip the unsightly chaos of ‘The Bay’ and opt for peace and serenity in California’s trendiest coastal town, Elk.

Big Sur 2.0 Or An Authentic Coastal Retreat?

Those of us who’ve dreamt of road-tripping the popular Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) have surely circled Big Sur as a must-stop or base camp.

Nestled between the scenic Santa Lucia Mountains and staggering cliff sides, the winding roads through Big Sur are a common stopping point to take photos at the very least.

Even more popular among surfers and campers, Big Sur was once the California coast’s small-town darling as an almost secret-level hideaway that became trendier and trendier over the years.

Now, Elk, of all places, is stealing the spotlight away.

Set along the NorCal’s scenic shoreline in a nearly missable if-you-blink-you-miss-it town, the few attractions Elk offers are top-notch.

But, perhaps best of all – no Starbucks eyesores or boujie resorts – just untamed West Coast beauty and pure serenity in a place where local publication SF Gate reports that ‘time forgot’.

You May Never Visit Santa Monica Again

As a multi-time visitor to Santa Monica, what is the appeal of skateboards whizzing by, rows of homeless encampments, and literally no space to lounge around?

Elk’s beaches offer the complete opposite experience, which is why Elk’s locals probably hate me for writing this.

Although, adding a Tesla charging station to your town isn’t exactly screaming, “Keep it movin’! Ignore this place!”.

While the beaches of NorCal can be a bit nippier than Socal, the immaculate scenery and blissful atmosphere can’t be topped.

Greenwood State Beach, sourced by the ever-flowing Greenwood River, is Elk’s coastal claim to fame.

Not that parking is a problem at the moment, as Elk becomes more prominent on travelers’ radars, it could be!

For now, beachgoers can park off the PCH across from the rightfully named Elk Store. The lot is headed by a trail and actually offers one of the prettiest views of the region.

And just off course from the beach lies Gunderson Rock, a popular spot for kayakers to take in the ubiquitous off-shore rock formations.

Any way you slice it, it’s a far cry from traditional California beaches, where relaxation is last on the list.

California Charm And Divine Eats

Usually, the South gets all the credit for down-home charm and friendly locals, but hey, as a Californian myself, I can attest we’re not all high-falutin, botox-injecting Hollywood stereotypes, or on the contrary, numbskulled surfer bros who can’t form a proper sentence.

There’s real charm in California if you go looking for it, and yes, mostly in small unsuspecting towns off-the-beaten-path.

Elk fits the bill, but it’s not only friendly locals that are the draw; it’s the offerings of the town itself.

Michelin Guide awarded Harbor House with 2 Michelin Stars, making this ‘hyper-locally’ sourced restaurant one of the toughest reservations to score these days.

That’s okay, though. Just more excuses to explore nearby wineries, such as Drew and Wentworth.

Better yet, autumn is arguably the best time to visit, given the region’s grape harvest conditions and splendid weather.

Of course, you’ll need a place to stay and Elk’s multiple surprisingly luxe inns have you covered.

Don’t expect to earn any points for your stay here, but the memories will last a lifetime.

September is an odd month. Some places still feel summery, while others begin to see a complete fall transformation.

In other words, despite the kids going back to school and vacation days being maxed out, it’s still a great time to plan your next getaway.

One such place is the European icon of Italy, where you shouldn’t feel forced to join the crowds in Rome, Venice, or the Amalfi Coast in order to have a splendid vacation.

Italy is brimming with hidden gems up and down the coast, but one Sicilian seaside town may top them off all.

Boasting warm blue water in autumn, along with a vast array of savory cuisine, set your sights for Sicily’s capital of Palermo for the ultimate fall escape.

The ‘Kingdom of the Sun: Italy’s Literal Hotspot

Some coastal towns may be pretty, but they can be a real snoozer.

While it’s great to chill out and unwind, maybe catch up on a book you’ve been meaning to finish, at some point, you’ll want to see the sites.

Palermo, being the capital, has plenty to discover both day and night. But the real draw this time of year is the immaculate weather.

While many travelers can’t wait to order a pumpkin concoction and snap fall photos until their thumbs are sore, the rest of us are still in search of sun and sand wherever we can find it.

Palermo is just the place. There’s no need to pack your wetsuit, as the waters offer a consistent summer feel through November.

Best of all, you won’t need to pack extra clothes either like you would in summer since exploring the city is much more enjoyable without sweat-staining all your clothes, living up to the name ‘Kingdom of the Sun’.

Summers can see highs of 98 degrees while fall is much more tolerable ranging anywhere from high 60’s to mid-80’s.

Tip: Check out Magaggiari Beach for some for the bluest waters and best resorts.

Rich In History And Beauty

Italy’s fascinating history and architecture aren’t exclusive to Rome, Florence, and Venice. Palermo boasts an incredible amount of captivating sites.

In fact, Palermo proudly showcases their Arabian roots through art, architecture, and even local markets.

Once under Arab rule for around 200 years, what remains are eye-popping marvels influenced by the Norman takeover in 1061.

The Palermo Cathedral, the Palace of the Normans, and the Capella Palatina, among others, have stood the test of time and now make for an amazing backdrop as you explore the city.

Let’s remember this is Italy, however, not a country stuck in time from the Arab world.

Brimming with charming piazzas, in most of the city you’ll feel as if you’re in Italy.

Although, you can definitely find places to appreciate their past, but centrally-located Piazza Pretoria is without a doubt the most popular, drawing a crowd to see the Fontana Pretoria masterpiece.

Roaming the numerous piazzas is a must, and where there’s piazzas, there’s gotta be pizzas!

Tip: To take a deeper dive in the region’s history, check out the ancient Valley of the Temples site (UNESCO-protected).

One Of Italy’s Most Underrated Foodie Destinations

Beaches and seafood go hand in hand, and lucky for you, you’re in the right spot!

Sicily offers decadent cuisine straight from the sea, paired perfectly with the region’s white wine.

One of the best places to enjoy the best of both worlds where you can step off the beach and enjoy a nice meal is Sferracavallo Beach.

To be honest, you can’t go wrong no matter what you order on the menu here, but you gotta start your day with a freshly brewed cappuccino at a delightful cafe.

From there, you gotta have a pizza at some point, right? I mean it’s Italy after all!

Here, Sicilian Pizza is a bit different than traditional pizza you may have in Rome or other cities.

Often fluffier and topped with sardines, locals and tourists agree it’s an odd couple that works!

One of the most popular Palermo restaurants to grab a slice is Tredicisette, where one recent patron raved, ‘Very lovely and tasty food. Cocktails were perfect, good amounts of alcohol and nice tasting’.

Dublin is typically your gateway into Ireland.

Despite the classic pubs, cobbled streets, and friendly locals, going beyond the city is where the country really shines.

Besides Dublin, travelers can fly directly to multiple airports in Ireland, such as Shannon and Cork.

By doing so, the country’s delightful villages are often overlooked in the midst of being captivated by Ireland’s astounding coastlines and storybook castles.

One such town has been named one of Ireland’s most scenic escapes where the atmosphere is like a ‘movie set‘.

With virtually no crowds and stunning medieval sites, it’s time to wave goodbye to the city life and say hello to the picturesque town of Inistioge.

A Storybook Town Steeped In Fascinating History

Travel anxiety can cause us to overthink where to go; I’m certainly guilty of it.

Heck, I’ve lived in San Diego 10 years and I’m just now visiting local hotspots I’ve shoved aside far too long.

The point is that Ireland is one of those destinations where plans can go out the window.

There are just too many amazing places to cover in a single trip.

That being said, if you want to experience a truly authentic Irish town where welcoming locals are ready to show off their beloved hideaway, then Inistioge is the answer to your unfinished travel plans.

Despite being off travelers’ radar, Inistioge has developed the ‘Heritage Trail’ for anyone ready to give their delightful community a fair shake.

This quaint village goes back deep to prehistoric times to where, as legend has it, the ancient Osraige tribe defeated Olaf Cuaran, King of Dublin, way back in 964.

Today, Inistioge is designated as a National Monument and protected under the National Monuments Act, giving more credence to the intriguing 23-stop Heritage Trail, featuring long-standing castles, landmark homes, and old-world churches.

Find Your Zen In Inistioge’s Beautiful Natural Settings

Dublin is a great city, but finding some of your inner peace amongst always-busy streets is a hard sell.

Sure, you can find a quiet corner of a pub until the ‘auld fellas’ burst into an impromptu sesh of harmonic Irish folk songs.

Well, Inistioge is the anti-Dublin in many aspects. One key reason is the pretty scenery and tranquility.

The Woodstock Gardens & Arboretum is a must-visit while here.

Entry is only $5.50 to gain access to gorgeous gardens, scenic trails, ancient trees, and yes, even flowing waterfalls along a specified trail.

This is also where you’ll find one of the city’s most historic landmarks – the Woodstock House, dating back to the 1700s and still going strong for her age.

You can spend all day perusing the expansive grounds and take advantage of the best views of the entire village and parallel River Nore.

Best of all, you can fuel up or cap off your day at the grounds’ charming tea rooms. But don’t wait too long – tea rooms close October through April!

Receiving high praise across the board, one recent visitors revealed, “Woodstock Gardens is a perfect place to visit with family and friends, even better it’s dog friendly. Really lovely walk around the gardens and into the wood, you can really spend as much as as little time as you’d like.”

Getting Here And Where To Stay

Inistioge is located in Kilkenny County, away from other major cities.

Many of Ireland’s most popular destinations are spread out, working in Inistioge’s favor, as you can conveniently fly into Dublin or Cork.

From Dublin, you can hop aboard a train or bus to Kilkenny, then transfer busses or hail a cab to Inistioge.

Expect train tickets to start around $10 by booking directly through the Irish Rail.

You could rent a car too but know that Ireland does require International Driver’s Licenses for non-European residents.

From Cork, it’s a longer train ride but only about $6 more than Dublin.

The same goes for departures from Shannon, with an additional stop, meaning Dublin is the most feasible overall.

Upon arrival, don’t expect the familiar name-brands and eyesore chain restaurants. Inistioge boasts a sense of real Ireland with traditional pubs and homey Bed & Breakfasts.

According to new tourism reports, Lake Charles is Louisiana’s latest hotspot for travelers, welcoming over 7 million visitors!

Chock-full with everything from down-home charm to towering waterfront hotels, this sunny lake town in the Bayou is calling your name as you plan your next fall getaway.

Louisiana ‘Playground’ Or Biloxi Wannabe?

Lake Charles is described as “Louisiana’s Playground“, while most would say New Orleans’ Bourbon Street alone fits that moniker.

Everyone and their mother (okay, maybe not literally) visit Las Vegas for sinful dusk-til-dawn nights, there’s also Biloxi, Mississippi, a coastal city with name-brand hotels and casinos served as the South’s mini-Vegas on the beach.

Biloxi is definitely more well known, but close behind is Lake Charles as it trends upward.

This lovely lake town is set between the Texas border and New Orleans.

Skip The Fall Foliage! Relax Poolside Instead

Lake Charles can remain in the 80s until Thanksgiving dinner, offering travelers a summer-esque escape while others bundle up in coats and sip their Pumpkin Spice Lattes to stay warm.

Boasting perfect pool weather, take advantage of Lake Charles’ unmissable hotels among the small cityscape.

Looking out over the skyline, the Golden Nugget and L’Auberge hotels overpower the nearly otherwise nonexistent skyline and provide 2 of the best places to stay.

Perched riverside along the Calcasieu River, this dynamic overlooks Lake Charles and nearby Prien Lake as well.

The Golden Nugget is a nice 4-star hotel boasting a resort-style pool for your enjoyment, while the L’Aurberge is a step up as a 4-star ‘Resort’.

And no, there is no clear price difference between one describing themselves as a ‘resort’. In fact, L’Auberge is often cheaper.

For example, for a weeklong stay in October, L’Auberge is $181 per night while the Golden Nuggets tops $200.

There are plenty of ways to relish Lake Charles’ waters too.

It’s a popular spot for fishing, boating, and kayaking, but swimming in the murky waters with the critters Louisiana is known for can be iffy.

While Cajun cuisine is known for featuring an array of local delicacies, not all ‘gators end up on the plate. And you definitely don’t want to become the next dish by taking a dip in the lake.

Tip: For more affordable stays, check out Lake Charles proper rather than the riverside. The Marco Hotel Lake Charles and Horseshoe Lake Charles are often under $100.

Where Down-Home Charm Meets Year-Round Festivities

Southern hospitality holds true in Lake Charles, which is the primary reason why so many repeat visitors are putting this pretty lake town on the map.

As a great place to enjoy the outdoors, indulge in local cuisine, and shop ’til you drop, the key ingredient is its friendly people and magnetic charm, particularly in historic Old Town.

You’ll find over 40 blocks of well-preserved Victorian and Creole architecture, quirky street murals, and divine restaurants here.

More so, you’ll find festive events throughout the year.

While it’s a ways away, The Independent actually claims Lake Charles is a better Mardi Gras destination than New Orleans – strong words!

Lake Charles isn’t just Plan B for Mardi Gras, however. There are numerous festivals to watch for, but here are a few:
