Located within walking distance from the London Zoo and The Regent’s Park, Euston is centrally located, making for an excellent escape route when prices and/or crowds push you too far.

Stirling is truly magical in fall, but to take Lumo’s new route, you’ll have to wait until spring — a time when this lesser-known stunner is set to be put on the map.

Opening May 1, 2026, Culture Night will be one of the town’s most festive nights of the year, offering a nighttime cultural takeover through music, dance, comedy, art, crafts, and literature showcased through multiple facets, such as museums and galleries.

Though there’s no official launch date for the train, our sources confirm ‘as early as Spring 2026′ to hopefully line up perfectly with this event.

Otherwise, you can stick to the classics and still have a grand ol’ time flipping the pages back through a pastime era, where Stirling Castle was the key to Scotland’s throne and church bells of the Holy Rude echoed down below to one of the UK’s most vibrant Old Towns — all still standing the test of time and open to visit.

Of course, a visit to such a storied city wouldn’t be right without stepping foot into a traditional pub to grab a local pint.

The Settle Inn is Stirling’s ‘oldest alehouse’, holding rave reviews and reasonable prices for such a popular community staple.

Plus, you might want to be a little loosey-goosey visiting some of Stirling’s grim attractions like the Beheading Stone, a literal chopping block for treasonous citizens, dating back to medieval times.

Given its low prices, Lumo is a far cry from what you might expect out of London, but the new London-Stirling route has yet to go on sale since there’s no official launch date.

New High-Speed Train Will Connect 2 Iconic U.S. Cities

California has been known to put its foot in its mouth, which makes sense with the growing yoga craze, but not when it comes to false promises.

As a 10-year California resident, I’ve learned to take any exciting news in the “Golden State” with a grain of salt, not knowing if it will ever come to fruition or if it will simply remain a headline etched in time.

Take the newly-opened Gaylord Resort in my hometown of Chula Vista, for example. It’s the last place in San Diego County you’d expect a waterfront oasis, but it did actually open (albeit to a mixed bag of reviews).

California has been promising thrilling new train routes for years, but where are they?

Local sources in Los Angeles have released new details for a high-speed route that’s promised to connect the outskirts of LA, taking travelers across the desert at blazing speeds to reach “Sin City”.

Though, many questions remain, we at Travel Off Path are stoked to reveal all 4 stops slated for Brightline’s new venture, helping you decide if hopping aboard a train from LA to Las Vegas is worth it, or if the quick flight or 4-hour drive are more suitable.

The Full Route: Where Brightline’s New Train Will Supposedly Go

Ever heard of Brightline? The relative newbie in the rail industry made a name for itself in recent years by connecting some of Florida’s most popular locales.

While Japan is the undisputed king of so-called “bullet trains”, Brightline has given American travelers hope to follow suit as the only true U.S. high-speed operator.

That’s not to say Amtrak’s time is up, especially since the iconic brand is launching new routes too, but Brightline is ready to set the West Coast abuzz with the task of cutting through California’s notorious red-tape stalemates.

That may be why travelers will have to wait a few years before the train is supposedly launched in December 2028.

Another downside is that the train will not go to LA proper — you know, Hollywood, Rodeo Drive, etc. — it departs from Rancho Cucamonga near Ontario, which is mostly known for being home to a great alternative airport to LAX.

From the LA outskirts toward Nevada, the whole route is set for launch as follows:
- Rancho Cucamonga
- Hesperia
- Victor Valley
- Las Vegas
To reach the LA city limits for typical tourist attractions, there will be an option to connect from Rancho Cucamonga by MetroLink.

Is The New Train Really Necessary?

There’s no shortage of travelers going back and forth from the bright lights of Hollywood to the even brighter lights of the neon-lit Strip.

Factoring in expected max speeds of 218 mph, plus 2 stops in between, the train tops out at roughly half the speed of a commercial jet.

While you may not have to deal with the hassle of TSA at train stations, California to Vegas is also a popular road trip, though traffic is notoriously bad in both major cities.

So, let’s lay out the options here:
- Amtrak does not service Las Vegas
- The drive from LA to Vegas takes roughly 4 hours (without headache-inducing traffic)
- Direct flights are frequent from every Southern California airport, lasting roughly an hour in the air
- Budget travelers can also hop aboard numerous buses to ride across the desert
Then there will be Brightline, claiming to connect this pair of iconic cities in 2 hours and 10 minutes, but most tourists will find themselves bored in the ‘burbs upon arriving in Rancho Cucamonga.

There’s also the well-documented aspect that both LA and Las Vegas are struggling to draw visitors right now, which begs the question if these are the right cities to connect when there are ample ways to reach either city, neither of which is living up to their usual vacation hotspot reputation.

Expected Ticket Prices

Here’s another doozy to consider — weighing costs has to come into consideration, too, when factoring in logistics.

While it’s tough to predict airfare 3 years from now, a quick Google search showed the cheapest LA-Vegas flight this weekend goes for $94 (Frontier).

You would get to Vegas in about an hour and pay less than what’s being reported.

One-way ticket prices are expected to be:
- $119 for standard class
- $133 for premium (may not be offered until 2031)

We’ve all seen London in the movies, and many areas of the city aren’t far off from its cinematic portrayal.

Hopping aboard bright red double-decker buses through the city is definitely a must, but once you deboard, you’re just another face in the thick of the city’s bustling streets.

London is great to visit, but more and more travelers are scoping out the U.K.’s best alternatives and hidden gems.

From the storybook Cotswolds to surprisingly stunning islands, the U.K. is finally getting its due beyond the fascination with London.

Just this week, a new train connecting 2 of the U.K.’s most beautiful cities was launched by the Great Western Railway (GWR), making England all the more enticing to explore.

Don’t Call It A Comeback – It’s Only Been 21 Years!

The GWR has brought back to life one of its most scenic routes end to end after a 21-year pause.

So, why now?

Like I said, our friendly allies ‘across the pond’ have become a trendier destination, especially among American travelers.

Another would simply be locals who want to enjoy their own country’s top cities as well. And where locals go, travelers should always follow!

Having halted multiple decades ago, the potential for a tourism boom beyond London is more than feasible, and it seems this route is here to stay.

Relaunched September 14th, discover the Gothic grandeur of Oxford connecting to Bristol, another beaut in its own right, and recently voted not only as one of the U.K.’s prettiest cities, but the happiest too. Cheerio!

With a handful of British treasures in between, tourists can escape the London grind for these historic gems instead.

The Full Route

The paperwork is submitted, and the boring behind-the-scenes bureaucracy is over; the GWR’s Bristol – Oxford route has officially commenced.

This is the official schedule from Bristol:
- Depart Bristol Temple Meads at 10.18am (or 3:18pm)
- Stop in Bath Spa at 10:31am (or 3:31pm)
- Stop in Chippenham at 10:44am (or 3:45pm)
- Stop in Swindon at 10:58am (or 4:00 pm)
- Arrive in Oxford at 11:29am (or 4:31pm)
Reverse order from Oxford:
- Depart Oxford at 12:03pm (or 5:12pm)
- Stop in Swindon at 12:34pm (or 5:46pm)
- Stop in Chippenham at 3:45pm (or 5:58pm)
- Stop in Bath Spa at 1:00pm (or 6:11pm)
- Arrive in Bristol Temple Meads at 1:12pm (or 6:23pm)
Direct service is only offered on Saturdays twice per day. Prices start at $34 one-way from either Oxford or Bristol Temple Meads for Standard Class.

First Class travelers will have to splurge a bit more with current fares costing $70 each way, which can be booked on GWR’s official website.

Tip: Sooner you book, the better! GWR offers discounted fares for advanced bookings.

Where You Should Go: The Oxford – Bristol Route’s Highlights

Beyond London, travelers may wonder where they should venture off to, but these are some real gems included on this route.

Oxford:

Starting off with Oxford, the architecture alone will leave you gobsmacked! Dating back to the 12th century, the city’s Gothic marvels are a sight to behold, especially at world-renowned Oxford University.

Beyond the school grounds, the city is well worth exploring along the scenic River Thames where you’ll notice a huge difference between the peaceful atmosphere versus London’s madness.

Make sure to stop at The Covered Market, a legendary bazaar dating back to the 1700s!

Swindon, Chippenham, & Bath:

The in-betweeners along this revamped route shouldn’t be overlooked. Swindon is small yet mighty with cultural sites and beautiful countryside.

You can nerd out at the Museum of Computing, take a stroll through Queens Parks or check out an authentic local pub like The Beehive without the touristy fluff.

Chippenham is picturesque town along the River Avon dating back to Roman times. Today, you’ll find charming cobbled streets and medieval buildings, but most impressive is the bustling town market held on weekends.

Bath may be the most notable of the bunch renowned for, you guessed it, baths! Roman baths, that is, are an absolute must when visiting the area!

Bristol:

Circling back, Bristol was voted one of the U.K.’s prettiest cities for a reason.

There’s plenty to take in, boasting vibrant street art, a glistening waterfront, and astounding landmarks like Bristol Castle!

While many Americans are still basking in the sun, others are seeking out lush woodlands ready to pop in fall colors any day now.

Some of us prefer to take the backroads through vibrant foliage-lined streets, but why not let the conductor take the wheel…or buttons…or whatever the heck they use to guide you through one of the prettiest regions of the U.S?

It’s safe to say Americans need to take a page out of Europe’s playbook and travel by train more often, whereas this time of year is absolutely spectacular to hit the rails!

One such region is New York, both the iconic city and upstate all the way to the Canadian border and beyond.

In fact, the Big Apple is where you should begin your scenic journey on Amtrak’s Adirondack Train this fall as you zoom through the East Coast’s fall splendor to Canada’s most cultural city.

Pack Your Passport For New York’s Best Fall Adventure!

Any excuse to visit New York City is okay with me, and it makes for the perfect starting point for an epic fall excursion.

Departing the famous Penn Station, get ready to leave behind the bright lights of the city and embrace all that fall has to offer.

Central Park is cool and all, but wait ’til you see what Amtrak’s ‘Adirondack’ route has in store!

You’ll head north aboard a comfy train equipped with free wifi and offering meals, snacks, and beverages no matter which seat class you choose.

After passing Yonkers and Poughkeepsie, the scenery noticeably shifts once you arrive at the ‘Hudson’ stop.

The famed Hudson Valley showcases a rush of autumnal hues and serves as a gateway to the mesmerizing Catskills, too.

Lake Champlain: New York & Vermont’s Shared Shining Star This Fall

If you’re aboard for the whole ride, you’ll want to snag a window seat as early as possible!

Once you pass Hudson Station, your next stop is Albany, New York’s capital city. Here, many opt for neighboring Vermont, as few places are more gorgeous this season than the Green Mountain State.

Both New York and Vermont share one of the most Instagram-able sites for “leaf peepers” and that is beautiful Lake Champlain.

While the train stays on the New York side never crossing into Vermont, if there was ever a time to depart before Canada, this is it!

Amtrak’s ‘Adirondack’ route lives up to the hype as a “Top 10 Most Scenic Train Ride in the World”, as their website claims, largely in part to this stunning region brimming with a glowing lake surrounded by abundant kaleidoscopic trees.

Beyond the lake lies a set of historic towns, such as Saratoga Springs and Ticonderoga, before reaching the border town of Plattsburgh.

The latter beholds one of America’s most underrated historical sites, all while enjoying the sweeping views of Lake Champlain.

Fort Ticonderoga is a former French fort holding a tumultuous timeline throughout multiple wars but ultimately captured by the British in the late 1700s.

But hey, is anyone mad about fish & chips?

Last Stop: Montreal, Canada’s Most Cultural City

Once you’ve reached Plattsburgh, it’s time to reach for your passport. Crossing into Canada should be a breeze, especially visiting a popular city like Montreal.

Upon crossing our northern neighbor’s border, there are 2 stops left on the docket before your trip comes to an end:
- St-Lambert, QC
- Montreal, QC – Gare Centrale / Central Station
Both stops are in Montreal but on two different sides of the tracks. Okay, enough puns…

If you’re looking for a central location, it’s best to get off at Gare Centrale. You’ll be smack dab in Montreal’s bustling city center, which has great eats (like Joe Beef), beautiful architecture, and beaming parks with bright foliage.

The Adirondack Train departs New York’s Penn Station at 8:35 am, arriving at Montreal’s Gare Central at 10:15pm just in time to check into your hotel and recharge to explore all the wonders of this French-inspired city.

Between so many underrated cities often overlooked by the coastal allure of sun, sand, and ocean breeze, much of the Midwest goes by the wayside.

With the exception of Chicago, travelers are missing out on some of the best fall escapes smack dab in the middle of the U.S., where fall colors transform city skylines and park treetops for miles on end.

One such place is even overlooked in their own state, let alone the entire Midwest region.

Forget Cincinnati and even trendy Columbus, and venture into Cuyahoga Valley National Park for epic waterfalls and a scenic fall train ride through a rush of vibrant foliage.

50 Years Of Year-Round Astounding Nature, But Fall is Best!

Located between Cleveland and Akron lies Cuyahoga Valley National Park, one of the Midwest’s most serene destinations to immerse in fall splendor.

Celebrating 50 years since being designated as an official National Park, the National Park Service (NPS) has announced ‘50 new ways to experience‘ this magical hidden gem.

Fall is when the crowds pick up, however.

The NPS recommends visiting on weekdays as early as possible or squeezing in a trip later in the day to better your chances of finding a parking space.

October is definitely the best month to leaf-peep and snap incredible photos throughout the 33,000-acre park.

There are ample hiking trails to check out the lush, vibrant scenery. NPS recommends these 3 trails for the best photo-ops this fall:
- Brandywine Gorge Trail
- Oak Hill Trail
- Ledges Trail
Go Chasing Waterfalls! Cuyahoga Valley Boasts More Than Fall Colors

Majestic waterfalls often seem like a distant dream to reach, but that’s not the case at all.

Sure, you can jet off to natural wonders such as Iceland, or perhaps visit cheesy over-fluffed attractions like Niagara Falls, but there are actually many other places with similar scenery tucked away in our National Parks – Cuyahoga Valley being one of them.

There are at least 8 noteworthy waterfalls well worth a visit within the park grounds.

According to the Conservancy For Cuyahoga Valley National Park, these waterfalls are the 5 most visible for your next fall adventure:
1. Great Falls
2. Bridal Veil Falls
3. Alexander Falls
4. Deer Lick Cave Area
5. Mudcatcher Falls
That being said, Brandywine Falls usually tops the list for visitors.

This flowing waterfall cascading nearly 70 feet into a picturesque gorge offers views both high and low, receiving rave reviews from recent visitors like, “This is a great waterfall. The boardwalk and stairs seems to be quite well maintained. It’s plenty wide enough for people (and their pets) to walk in each direction. The falls themselves were very picturesque.”

Plus, this waterfall is equipped to stay as long as you like with picnic areas, water fountains (no, not the actual waterfall!), and spotlessly clean restrooms, according to parkgoers in multiple reviews.

Explore Spain By Train: First Stop – Malaga

Spain may be mostly known for Barcelona, Madrid, and the multitude of gorgeous islands off the mainland’s scenic coast, but there’s one city boasting intriguing museums, beautiful beaches, and eye-popping castles and fortresses.

That’s right. Pablo Picasso’s hometown of Malaga is a perfect gateway to begin your Spanish excursions and will soon be the starting point for a thrilling new train ride.

The full journey will last 5 and a half hours should you not depart before ultimately reaching the vast wonders of Spain’s shining star, Barcelona.

Operated by budget rail line, Iryo, there will be 2 departures per day (one outward, one returning) so keep in mind you can also flip the script and take this train in reverse order if you’re in another city.

Plus, if you time it right, promos during the first week of the initial launch are super affordable with fares as low as $26.50 one-way, depending on which class selection you choose for weekdays.

Prices are a tick higher on weekends. The first train is set to depart December 15, 2024.

3 Exciting Stops Before Barcelona

You can’t really go wrong in Spain, can you?

Although, we don’t recommend Ibiza unless you’re into the party scene.

But hey, trains don’t cross the Balearic Sea, so you can enjoy a few other much more enjoyable stops before reaching Barcelona.

If you want to pack in as much of Spain as possible in one trip, Iryo’s new train is the way to go, literally.

Whether you start or end in Barcelona, you have three other cities to explore if you choose to hop off, and one of them is another of Spain’s icons!

Travelers aboard this route can also check out Zaragoza, Cordoba, and Madrid, adding 2 lesser-known cultural cities as well as another of Spain’s legendary getaways.

Albeit, Madrid and Barcelona are the main destinations where locals have been frustrated, to say the least, regarding tourists flooding their hometown.

If you want to feel a bit more welcomed, Malaga, Zaragoza, and Cordoba may be more suitable, but on the flip side, Barcelona and Madrid may just be too good to pass up.

Zaragoza and Cordoba are unique in their own right, offering a different vibe than Spain’s famous cities, with attractions like Zaragoza’s vibrant Plaza de Pilar and Cordoba’s picturesque whitewashed Jewish Quarter.

Tip: Should you choose to stop in Madrid, the layover is only 20 minutes. You will need to reroute for an extended stay.

Last Stop – Barcelona

Circling back, you can definitely make your starting point in Barcelona, as it’s probably the most connected city in Spain, including another of Iryo’s popular routes departing from Seville.

For this new route, however, trains will depart Barcelona at 11:50am and arrive in Malaga at 5:42pm. Conversely, the train will leave Malaga at 11:35am and arrive in Barcelona at 5:37pm.

Here in Barcelona you’ll find a bustling city brimming with immaculate architecture, world-class Spanish cuisine, the whimsical Instagram-worthy Park Guell, and access to gorgeous beaches in close reach.

Although, locals swear by the nearby town of Tarragona as a way to escape the city’s crowds for spacious beautiful beaches.

But if you’re looking to try something new outside of the usual beaches and bars that the country is famous for then you should consider this breathtaking train ride in Mexico nobody knows about.

I use the word breathtaking a lot, but the Copper Canyon railway really is breathtaking.

It runs along one of the world’s great routes, crossing viaducts over deep canyons and carving its way through mountain tunnels.

In fact, on your journey, you’ll pass over 37 bridges and through 86 tunnels.

Why Explore The Copper Canyon Railway

I have a thing about trains (I love them!), so I’m always on the hunt for new, fascinating routes.

Copper Canyon is often referred to as the Mexican Grand Canyon, and a journey through it is one of the most exciting train rides in Mexico.

In fact, Copper Canyon is much larger than the Grand Canyon.

Located in the southwestern part of the state of Chihuahua in northwestern Mexico, the Copper Canyon is a vast and stunning network of six distinct canyons within the Sierra Madre Occidental mountain range.

The Copper Canyon railway plots a course right through the canyon system.

You can take the journey from start to finish in one 8-hour trip, or you can disembark along the way to really explore the canyon’s beauty and culture.

Spectacular landscapes, outstanding feats of engineering, and plenty of opportunities for outdoor adventure. This is an unforgettable train experience.

When To Travel The Copper Canyon Railway

There is no bad time of year to travel on the Copper Canyon Railway. The breathtaking scenery changes with the seasons.

But it’s worth noting that the scenic train route you can enjoy depends on both the day you travel and the time of year you travel.

During the summer season, between 08/08 – 09/29, the route is longer, and you can ride the train all the way to Chihuahua.

On Thursday and Saturday, the train departs from Chihuahua at 7 am and arrives in Divisadero at 2.15 pm.

Outside of this peak summer season you can ride from Creel to Los Mochis on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday and from Los Mochis to Creel on Monday, Thursday and Saturday.

When planning your trip, it’s important to note that the train doesn’t operate on Wednesdays, and during May and June, it doesn’t run on Mondays and Tuesdays either.

The Chepe Express is the name of the tourist train that runs on this route and it offers a more comfortable and luxurious experience than the regional railway that runs on the same route and is primarily used by locals getting from A to B.

Booking Tickets For The Copper Canyon Railway

There are a handful of luxury providers that organize tours on the Copper Canyon railway, with new packages launched all the time, but I’ve checked out the prices and the cheapest way to secure tickets it to book with the Chepe Express website directly.

There are 3 different classes of ticket and carriage for the train: First, Executive, and Tourist.

A tourist class ticket from Creel to Los Mochis will cost $2,598.00 MXN ($141) while an executive class ticket on the route will cost $3,374.00 MXN ($183).

Finally the same journey in first class would cost $4,820.00 MXN ($262).

These prices may seem a little higher than you would expect to pay for a normal train journey, but this is no normal train ride.

If we put aside the breathtaking natural beauty you will experience (that you simply wouldn’t be able to see any other way) the train itself is a work of art.

Which Class Is The Right Class?

No matter which class of ticket you choose, you can expect to find spacious carriages with comfortable, wide, padded seats.

In executive class, you will enjoy reclining seats and panoramic windows to really make the most of the views too. plus, you’ll have access to a stylish bar where you can purchase drinks and snacks, as well as access to high-quality toilet facilities.

So, what will you get if you splash the cash and upgrade to first class?

Everything mentioned above plus extra space, a terraced car with an observation deck that offers the very best views on board, and a complimentary meal in the restaurant car.

Honestly, though, whichever class you choose, this train is plush, and the views you’ll see are genuinely awe-inspiring.

Travelers Can Now Visit This Unknown Region of Japan Thanks To Newly Opened Bullet Train

While it’s common knowledge now that travel is back with a bang, there’s one destination in particular that seems to have secured its place on every bucket list and “best destinations” index.

I’m talking about Japan, of course, the iconic Asian country beloved for its breathtaking temples, ultra-advanced cities, and spectacularly beautiful nature destinations.

Tourist favorites like Kyoto, Osaka, and Tokyo never cease to be trendy.

With surging tourist arrivals, the country has recently introduced new regulations to prevent negative impacts from potential overtourism.

But even with all the hype around this beautiful nation, there still remain regions that have slipped under the radar and feel off the beaten path.

Chances are you’ve never heard of the Fukui prefecture in Japan–and neither have most people, which means you’ll enjoy fewer tourists at cultural attractions and more solitude in nature.

The Fukui region may not be a household name like Tokyo, but it is full of awe-inspiring highlights like must-try fresh Echizen crab dishes, crumbling ruins, ancient temples, and Maruoka Castle, one of the twelve original castles of Japan.

The New Bullet Train Launch Makes It Easier To Visit Fukui Prefecture Than Ever Before

Japan’s lightning-fast and undeniably efficient shinkansen (bullet) trains make getting around the country quick and easy.

And as of March 16th, the highly anticipated 78-mile addition to the previous Tokyo-Kanazawa route is officially open.

This extension connects the Fukui prefecture to the rest of Japan via bullet train, making it easier than ever to explore the lesser known region.

The shinkansen’s new service will run 14 round trips per day between Tokyo and Tsuruga, which takes just over 3 hours to reach from Japan’s capital.

Prior to this launch, there was limited express train service connecting these cities, but the new bullet train cuts an hour off the travel times and provides a new, direct connection.

So, what makes this hidden region worth visiting?

Authentic Zen Buddhism Temple Experiences

If wandering through a peaceful, active monastery and ornate temple complex tucked away in the forest sounds like a dream to you, the Eiheiji Temple is a place you won’t want to miss.

Nestled in the forested hills outside the city of Fukui, this 12th-century temple can be explored in the afternoon and is one of the two head temples for Soto Zen Buddhism.

Eiheji is made up of 70 individual buildings connected by walkways and can be easily reached by direct bus from Fukui station; it takes 30 minutes and will cost 750 yen.

The Land of Dinosaurs

Another key attraction of the region is the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum, which is located in Katsuyama.

Fukui earned its nickname of the country’s dinosaur capital for a good reason–80% of all the dinosaur fossils in Japan, including 5 new species, were found here.

With 4 floors, animatronic dinosaurs, and some 40 skeletons, four of which are made entirely from original bones, this fascinating museum is one of the best in its category.

Rugged Sea Cliffs

A quick adventure from Fukui station will land you at the 10 million-year-old rock formations of Tojinbo Cliffs in Echizen Kagakaigan Quasi National Park

Travelers craving a nature fix can head here for an epic sunset over the Sea of Japan, reveling in the unique beauty of the rocky columns and honeycombed formations carved by the ocean.

A short hike from the sea cliffs is Oshima Island, easily reached by a lovely pedestrian bridge that can’t be missed.

This tiny serene island is navigable by hiking paths and home to a beautiful forest shrine that is well worth a visit when exploring the area.

Relax In The Hotsprings Of Awara

If you’ve got the time and are craving a traditional Japanese spa experience, taking the new shinkansen to Awara is a great addition to a trip.

This city is renowned for its mineral-rich hot springs, which visitors can soak in, as well as the traditional ryokan inns.

Aside from its appeal as a wellness destination, Awara also boasts the Kanaz Forest of Creation.

This unique art exhibition spans a 200-meter forest and features site-specific art installations and sculptures interspersed with nature.

Visitors can also take hands-on workshops to learn glassblowing, ceramics, and other craft forms.

Whether you want to visit Fukui as a day trip or add a few days to your itinerary to experience all the prefecture has to offer, this hidden gem is a must-see before it becomes popular!

This Safe Destination Is Surging In Popularity Since The Launch Of The New Maya Train

The Maya Train has forever changed the way we approach travel in the Mexican Caribbean, shortening travel distances between all the major resort zones, and making it a lot leasier for foreign tourists to reach lesser-known destinations that could be accessed with a car previously.

As a result, one of these hidden gems, the charming, remarkably-safe city of Campeche, is becoming increasingly more popular for vacationers to visit, with Mexican President himself confirming it is now the third most sought-after destination on the route.

Since the Maya Train debuted, as many as 7,230 tickets for Campeche were sold, surpassed in sales only by Merida and Cancun.

Tourists Flock Into Campeche For The Fascinating Culture

Campeche is one of the oldest cities not only in Mexico but also on the mainland North American continent.

European settlers established it as early as 1540 in a strategic location on the Gulf of Mexico, and it’s not a place you want to skip if you’re a culture aficionado.

Picture centuries-old cobbled lanes lined by brightly-painted facades that still retain their Old World charm, plazas flanked by monumental, viceregal Baroque palaces, and well-preserved Spanish convents and churches built to last for eternity.

Campeche is easily one of the most beautiful cities in Mexico, and a historically charged one at that.

The main building in the Historic Center, Campeche Cathedral, was constructed as early as the 16th century, and it’s one of the most impressive colonial structures in the Yucatán Peninsula.

Other points of interest in town include the Mayan Angel, a landmark statue celebrating Campeche pre-Columbian origins, San José Fort, one of the city’s main defensive mechanisms against pirate incursions, and the surviving city walls.

Out of all colonial cities of the New World, Campeche is only of two to still have its protective murallas nearly intact, the other being Quebec City, Canada’s Europenized, French-speaking city. In recognition of its cultural value, UNESCO has added it to its World Heritage Site list.

Beautiful Beaches, High Levels Of Safety And Affordable Stays

Besides the historical attractions, Campeche is within short driving distance of several paradisaical Gulf beaches, such as Playa Caracol, a serene, family-friendly swimming site bounded by mangroves, and the aptly-called Bahamitas, or ‘Little Bahamas’, where sands are virgin-white and waters a bright-blue.

Other than being indisputably beautiful, Campeche has made headlines lately for being one of the safest state capitals in Mexico and the only major city other than Merida to have attained a Level 1 status, as awarded by U.S. authorities.

If you are unfamiliar with travel advisories, Washington classifies different destinations between Levels 1 and 4, with 1 being the safest possible—including risk-free countries like Iceland, Norway, and Finland—and 4 being the most dangerous and that should be avoided at all costs (Russia, North Korea, and the like).

Despite being a fairly large city, home to over a million residents in its wider metropolitan area, Campeche can feel incredibly quaint, with a high number of pedestrianized streets, which means less of the usual chaotic traffic and very low crime rates.

As is the case with other cities in Mexico, you should definitely not let your guard down, however encouraging advisories sound, but you shouldn’t expect harassment and scamming to be as common, nor pickpocketing or violence, compared to Cancun or Mexico City.

Campeche is also a lot more affordable than your usual Mexican resort town, with centrally-located boutique hotels costing between $112 and $160 to book per night, as listed on Booking.com, and lower food and consumer prices.

How Easy Is It To Get To Campeche On The Maya Train?

Now that you know why Campeche is trending with Maya Train travelers, you are probably wondering how actually easy it is to get there if you’re landing in Cancun, and how much tickets cost.

As seen on the official website, there are two Cancun-Campeche departures planned every day, at 7 am and 9 am, at a total journey length of five-and-a-half hours. The train calls at a number of stations along the way, including ‘Magical Towns’ Valladolid and Izamal and fellow colonial gem Merida.

Tickets can be purchased via the Maya Train online shop or any station and authorized vending point. There are three seating categories: Tourist, Premium, and Local.

Tourist tickets start from around MXN 1,166 during the inaugural phase, or roughly $67.
