This Popular European Country Is Offering Free Train Travel This Summer

Spain is renowned for its rich culture, stunning landscapes, and delicious cuisine, making it a popular destination for travelers from all over the world.

One of the most exciting recent developments for tourists and locals alike has been the introduction of free train travel.

This initiative was implemented last year to combat the rising cost of living as well as encourage the use of public transportation over personal vehicles.

It was such a success that it has been extended through the end of 2023, with hopes of making it permanent.

Although the intention was to alleviate the burden for Spanish citizens, the free train travel subscription is open to all who register, allowing visitors to explore the country’s vibrant cities and historic sites without having to worry about the cost of transportation.

How To Get The Free Train Pass

The free pass is only available on the Renfe train line for the Cercanías, Rodalies, and Media Distancia services.

These do not include long-distance high-speed train services, although there are currently major discounts on those as well.

To get the free pass, travelers must first register on Renfe.com or through the Renfe app, then select a route and choose “recurrent” as their rate.

You will then pay a deposit of 10 Euros (approximately $11 USD) for commuter routes or 20 Euros (approximately $22 USD) for medium-distance routes.

These deposits are refundable at the end of your subscription, providing that you’ve taken the required 16 one-way trips during the four-month subscription period.

The next subscription period is May 1^st through August 31^st, during which time travelers can make unlimited multi-journey trips with their passes.

When this time period expires, there will be another four-month subscription available through the end of December.

For most commuter routes, the generated QR code can be used via the app, but for medium-distance routes, it may be necessary to purchase your pass online or at the station and obtain a physical ticket.

There are station attendants available to help with this as well as ticket vending machines.

Although the journeys can last anywhere from 2 days to a week (or more!), there are no sleeper cars or cabins on the Rocky Mountaineer. Instead, guests are transported to hotels in the stopovers located along the route. Accommodation, transfers, and luggage delivery are all included in the package price.

This means you can enjoy the scenery and amenities during the daylight and relax in a comfortable hotel in the evenings – or enjoy a dinner out. You also have the option of extending your stay in various cities along the way to explore all there is to offer.

Packages, Options, and Upgrades

First, you can choose a one-way or “circle journey,” where you can combine different routes to create an extended or roundtrip journey. Why I’ll Always Take A Sleeper Train Over A Plane

I love traveling more than most other things in life, but I’ll never warm up to scrambling to the airport three hours early just to sit around waiting for the plane to show up. I know it’s better to show up early on the off chance that security is crazy slow and I need to allow more time, but something about the precious time wasted that could have been spent doing something more productive or fun rubs me the wrong way.

That’s why when I planned our last trip to Europe, I wanted to try taking advantage of a sleeper train instead of a short-haul flight.

It was the right decision.

First Things First, Finances

For our trip, we wanted to see Zurich and Vienna. When we looked into how we wanted to get from point A to point B, nonstop one-way flights were at least $300 each. In comparison, we were able to book a 4-bunk private sleeper cabin for under $100 each. Not only that, if you factor in the cost of getting to and from each airport and an additional night at a hotel, you can add at least another $200 on top of the $300 each in plane tickets.

For an estimated cost comparison with easy numbers, let’s say we spent $100 each on tickets for the train. Additionally, let’s say a hotel would have been $200, flights would have been $300 each, and transport to and from each airport would have been $20. In that case, our group of three saved $280 each, or $840 total, by opting for the night train! And all that for a way more relaxing, easy, and fun experience!

2 Hours To Train Departure

Our train, the ÖBB Nightjet, was set to leave the main station in Zurich at 9:40 PM. At around 7:30 PM, we were comfortably tucked into a cozy restaurant enjoying our last meal before heading off to Vienna. Our hotel happily watched our bags for the day, so we’d checked out early and taken a day trip to Stans and Luzern. If we’d had a flight in three hours, my stress levels would be through the roof! However, our ticket advised we only needed to show up 15 minutes early, so we were soaking up every second left in Zurich before walking to the station.

1.5 Hours To Train Departure

Glühwein galore! While Switzerland didn’t have quite as many spots as Germany to grab delicious mulled wine after the 1^st of the year, we made sure to find some to keep us warm while we walked around during our last hour or so in Zurich. Once again, I had to keep telling myself we were leaving soon. The entire lead-up to our train’s departure was so relaxed that it felt like it wasn’t even really happening.

To The Station 30 Minutes Early

My inner worrier started to kick in around 45 minutes before departure. So, we decided to grab our bags from the hotel and walk to the station. Since we were really close to our hotel, this only took us about 10 or 15 minutes. By the time we got to our platform, we were still about 30 minutes early. I don’t know about you, but if I was just showing up at the airport 30 minutes before my flight was going to leave, I’d be nauseous. There would pretty much be zero chance of making the flight.

However, even though our departure time was 30 minutes away, we were there before the train showed up. This was a travel style I could get used to, and the best part hadn’t even started.

Boarding

Taking a night train vs. a plane to another country is night and day when it comes to getting on board. For a flight, we’d have to get to the airport, clear security, go to our gate, wait for our boarding group, and then sit around in the plane for 30 minutes before takeoff. The night train was totally different.

When the train came into the station, we walked to our train car number, got on the train, walked to our sleeper cabin, and put our bags away. That was it. We didn’t even have to show our ticket to board, as the ticket checker simply waited until we were settled to check our tickets. In less than 10 minutes, we’d boarded, gotten settled, and were ready to go to sleep.

The Ride

I was too excited to go straight to sleep since this was my first time taking a night train. So, I decided to get a bit of work done. I love working on trains, and this was a super comfy office. The night train included Wi-Fi, had ample plugs for charging, and my bunk had its own reading light. After a bit of work, I walked down to the bathroom to get ready for bed. Some cabins have attached bathrooms with showers, but we opted for a more basic 4-bunk cabin to save some money. Still, the bathrooms were roomy and super functional — much better than an airplane bathroom!

And now for the most significant difference of all between flying and taking a night train…

Sleep! So much sleep!

When I fly overnight, I have such a hard time falling asleep. Not being able to stretch out or toss and turn a bit is just too cramped for me. I never fall asleep for more than 30 minutes or so. On the night train, though, I slept all night. The rocking of the train lulled me right to sleep, and I slept very well. We all woke up to a knock on the door as the attendant let us know our stop was in about an hour and that breakfast was about to be served.

I’ll Add A Night Train To My Itinerary From Now On

I loved taking the night train, and I’ll definitely add it to every itinerary I can instead of taking a flight. Night trains are better than planes because:
- You get to enjoy yourself more instead of stressing about rushing to the airport.
- Free, reliable Wi-Fi during your whole trip.
- You get an entire bed to yourself and can completely stretch out.
- There are cabins with an attached shower for a complete “hotel on rails” experience.
- You wake up in a new destination, completely refreshed and ready to explore.

Switzerland Just Launched A Gorgeous New Scenic Train

Imagine winding through the snow-capped Swiss Alps on a heated seat enjoying champagne and caviar while you take in the sights. That is now possible thanks to the launch of the GoldenPass Express, Switzerland’s newest scenic train. The seamless train ride connects the Swiss cities of Montreux and Interlaken and the 12 stops in between and takes 3 hours and 15 minutes.

The announcement of the GoldenPass Express is a big deal. The gorgeous journey is made possible by new components that allow the train to travel on two different width tracks, something that has not been done to this extent before. The project is said to have cost $96 million dollars. Operators hope this journey will join the ranks of other famous tourist trains like the Glacier Express and Bernina Express.

A Long Time Coming

The idea for this train has been in the works since 1873. In 1916 the GoldenPass Line was established making travel possible between Montreux and Lucerne. However, the rail network was built with two different gauge widths, meaning passengers needed to make 2 transfers throughout the journey. There were high hopes that building a third rail line could solve the problem, but the project’s expense was prohibitive.

Fancy New Train Technology

The problem faced by the engineers had to do with the size of the tracks that were built specific to the terrain they travel through. The mountain railways were built with metric gauges, while the long-distance tracks were standard gauges.

A game-changing resolution came when it was decided to modify the trains themselves, rather than the tracks. The resulting solution was to have the trains “jump” the two tracks. This is accomplished by using variable gauge bougies (the structure under the train that holds the axles and wheels in place ) and a gauge adapting ramp that can accommodate both sets of tracks, as well as the different platform heights. This is all done in seconds while passengers remain comfortably in their seats.

A Swiss Trian Journey With Breathtaking Scenery

The journey between Montreux and Interlaken is simply stunning. Passengers travel through the Vaud Riviera past the Bernese Alps and Pays-d’Enhaut. Advocates for the line had long dreamt of a seamless journey from “palm trees to glaciers” within the diverse mountain region.

The train now seamlessly connects the French and German-speaking regions, the rural areas to the cities, and lakes with the mountains and glaciers. The train’s launch is not only a dream come true for long-term supporters, it is also an engineering feat and world-first because of the new equipment used.

Passengers Can Enjoy The Ride In Luxury

The GoldenPass Express can carry 184 passengers in its five coaches. There are three different classes of seats available to purchase. While the majority of seats are in 2^nd class, passengers can upgrade to 1^st or Prestige class and truly ride in style.

Prestige class has 18 exclusive seats that are heated and can rotate so that passengers are always facing the direction of travel. The seats are extra roomy and comfortable and raised up by 15 inches so that passengers feel like they are part of the surrounding nature. All of the coaches offer panoramic views of beautiful Swiss nature.

GoldenPass Express has prioritized local purveyors in its food and beverage selection. Wines are from Swiss winemakers Testuz, and beer from the Rugenbräu brewery is also served. Charcuterie platters from a local Swiss butchery are available, as well as a selection of locally farmed Oona caviar.

Prices vary by class and passenger type and currently cost $78 for a second-class ticket, $122 for 1st class, and it costs an additional $38 to upgrade to a prestige class. Tickets can be purchased on the GoldenPass Express website. The train currently operates once a day in each direction. Beginning in June there will be four round-trip journeys.

Wanderu—a ground and air travel metasearch engine— gathered data and the company published a report with insights on the cheapest days to travel and when to catch the best last-minute deals.

There are different strategies that Americans can use to get the best prices. According to the information shared by KSL.com, Polina Raygorodskaya, CEO at Wanderu, explained: “Traveling on alternate days is one reliable method to avoid inflation’s worst impacts.” And added: “The other strategy is to book as early as possible, as prices will only go up as the holidays get close.”

The prices vary depending on the travel method and the dates. According to the study, the cheapest prices before Christmas are on weekdays. Those who can travel on Monday 19, Tuesday 20 or Wednesday 21 can save up to 12% on bus tickets and 23% on train tickets.

And there’s a date to avoid before the holiday, the most expensive day to travel is Friday 23, and tickets can also be a little pricey on December 18, 22, 26, and 27. Travelers who enjoy a little rush or can only gather at the very last minute can also get cheaper tickets on December 24 and 25.

Returning home after Christmas can be less expensive by bus, those returning by train should wait a few days. The best return date for train travel is December 29. Maybe one luxurious bus route could be worth the shot.

Train and bus travel behavior change a little more around New Year’s Eve. Travelers will get the cheapest bus prices on December 28 and 29, before New Year’s Eve, and the cheapest train seats on December 29 and 31. Travel on January 1, 2023, will be a little pricey for both transportation methods.

When it comes to train travel, it is not possible to find those last-minute extra vehicles. Amtrak is constantly announcing sales and promotions for customers to book in advance and when they include more itineraries for the holidays these are usually announced months ahead. Ticket prices increase closer to the date of travel, so once a traveler has made up their mind about where to spend the holidays and wants to travel by train, should book as soon as possible.

For those interested in saving more, between these two services, buses are usually cheaper than trains. Depending on the route, the train can double or triple the bus ticket price. For example, the average train fare from New York to Washington DC is $116 while the average bus fare is $31. It’s always wise to research and compare prices.

The world’s most populated country, China, holds the title for the world’s largest network of high-speed railways (around 23,500 miles), but you might be surprised by which country takes the second spot – Spain. Representing over 10% of China’s network, the country has just added a third fast train operator to its system, which has further cemented its spot as the number one longest rail network in Europe.

The introduction of the high-speed rail service, “iryo,” will make Spain’s rail network even cheaper and faster. With its trains running up to speeds of 223 miles per hour, high-speed trains have increasingly become an aggressive competitor to airlines and have been known to assist in sending national airlines broke, such as what happened in Italy with Alitalia. Spain’s new network will run operations between Madrid, Barcelona, and Zaragoza, with later routes being announced in mid-December and next year, including Madrid, Cuenca, and Valencia.

“It is great to see how commercially driven Open Access services – such as iryo — are making long-distance rail more attractive and winning travelers away from less sustainable transport modes, namely airlines and cars,” said Nick Brooks, secretary general of the Alliance of Passenger Rail New Entrants in Europe.

Are High-Speed Trains Cheaper Than Flights?

When comparing mid-December availability for trains from Barcelona to Madrid, tickets for iryo start at around €30 (U.S. $31). The trip time is around 2 hours and 45 minutes, while driving would take 6 hours. Renfe is the more expensive option, with tickets ranging from around 50 to 120 euros (US $52- 104) for a basic fare, although you can grab some cheaper tickets if you book an early morning time; or you might meet the conditions to travel on Renfe for free, which is an initiative to lure tourists and help relieve residents up until the end of 2023.

Spain also offers more budgeted train options, with tickets on avlo starting at 7 euros (around US $7) and ouigo starting at around 15 euros (around US $15). When booking in advance, you can save money by scoring some cheap tickets.

When compared to flights within the country, the national airline Iberia offers flights in December for around US $50, which takes under 1 hour and 15 minutes. There are third-party sites, which are much easier to use, but these do take a small booking fee. These include thetrainline.com, raileurope.com, omio.com, and petrbax.com, which all connect to the train lines’ ticket systems and will provide your ticket for boarding.

What Is The High-Speed Train Experience Like?

Depending on which train network you take and the class of ticket, traveling by train can be similarly compared to an airport, except the seats are a little larger, and you have options with tables and seats facing each other for groups. You can also walk around the train whenever you feel like it, and trains are typically on time in comparison to flights. Most trains also have a silent carriage, so the experience can be as peaceful and relaxing as you choose while you gaze at Spain’s beautiful countryside.

On Renfe trains, they offer two different seat types; a standard seat and a comfort seat (which means more space) with Basic, Choice, Comfort, and Premium fare types. They all differ in benefits, such as access to the club lounge, seat selection, unlimited changes, and complimentary food and drinks. All tickets include Wi-Fi, 3 items of luggage, audio and video on board, a café, and a silent train carriage. Renfe also offers an overnight sleeper train, which connects you to cities such as Madrid (Spain), Barcelona (Spain), and Lisbon (Portugal).

Iryo trains have a focus on customization and flexibility and offer two seat types and four classes of travel — Inicial, Singular, Singular Only You, and Infinita. Targeted more towards business travelers, the trains are all fitted with individual USB and standard power sockets, armrests, and free 5G Wi-Fi. They also offer an onboard bar and a menu consisting of seasonal ingredients and prepared-to-go healthy options.

New Maya Train Will Make Cancun More Popular Than Ever

Cancun has consistently broken tourism records nearly every month this year, and the trend isn’t slowing. However, an ambitious project is underway that will take tourism in the area to heights never before seen, The Maya Train. A sprawling 1500 km (≈932 mi) long railway will connect Cancun to the entire Yucatán Peninsula, allowing travelers access to over 190 tourist attractions and a total of 5 Mexican states. There will be 18 stops along the route, and the train will travel at a top speed of 160 km/h (≈100 mph).

What It Means For Cancun & Travelers

Although Cancun needs no help bringing in more tourists, The Maya Train will undoubtedly ramp up tourism in the area. With a direct connection to the train right from Cancun International Airport, travel to other areas will be easier and faster than it’s ever been. For instance, the first three stops out of the Cancun airport station will be Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum.

Incidentally, Playa del Carmen and Tulum are two more areas that have been breaking records. The new Maya Train will offer travelers an easier and faster way to reach these highly sought areas. As a result, Cancun International Airport should expect even more record-breaking in its future. Currently, it takes 1.5 hours to drive 118 km (≈73 mi) from Cancun Airport to Tulum. The Maya Train will connect Cancun to Tulum with a 110 km rail section with two stops in between.

Speed and Comfort

With a top speed of 160 km/hr and an assumption of 5 minutes at each of the two stops in between, travelers will still reach Tulum in under an hour. More specifically, it would take about 51 minutes. Aside from the significant time savings, the journey itself will be much more comfortable. The Maya Train will feature large comfortable seats, train cars that offer dining experiences, and even cabins with a place to lie down for those taking the train long distances.

For Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum, The Maya Train means they can each expect their visitor counts to grow exponentially. Easier access to these already-popular areas will make them more enticing to travelers looking to experience something new in the region. The adventurous traveler could plan an entire trip around the 18 stops along the route and utilize the cabins with resting areas for long-distance legs.

When Can Travelers Expect To Ride The Maya Train?

Due to environmental concerns over section 5 of the railroad track, which connects Cancun with Tulum, the project was temporarily halted. However, work on the section has started again, and tourists can expect to be able to ride The Maya Train by the end of 2023.

What’s Along The Route?

There will be many opportunities for tourists to explore more of the peninsula. Indeed, there will be access to nearly 200 tourist attractions along the route. Access to 5 Mexican states in the area will also make it easier for locals to connect with bigger cities.
