Are you planning a solo trip soon and wondering where to visit? If you’re looking at the staple beach destinations everyone seems to visit, maybe it’s time for a city vibe.

Last year, I backpacked Europe for 5 weeks, visiting 10 countries. What was a favorite of mine for solo travel?

Scotland’s charming, hilly capital is compact enough for solo travelers yet large enough to explore all its nooks and crannies.

Towering over the city sits Edinburgh Castle, and the cobblestone streets are just as beautiful in the rain.

The city’s Old and New Towns offer enough diversity for tourists never to get bored and an abundance of restaurants and pubs to experience Scottish charm at its finest.

There’s certainly a magical allure about Edinburgh: and it’s not just the fact that it looks like a village straight out of a Harry Potter novel.

With its chattery locals and variety of things to experience for all ages, it’s definitely a good spot for solo travelers.

Scottish Charm

You walk into a pub alone and leave with about 10 new friends. As with the Irish, the Scots are extremely friendly people to all. If you understand their banter, you’ll fit right in.

I stayed in Edinburgh for 5 days as a solo traveler and left the city feeling welcomed by everyone! There’s always a session happening in any of the local pubs or people waiting to help you out with recommendations.

Walk into a pub that’s having a Scottish night, and I guarantee you’ll meet at least one person worth chatting with.

During my tour to the highlands, our kilt-wearing tour guide became friends with all of us visitors on board. When I say you’ll feel like part of the family, I truly mean it.

There wasn’t one time I felt ‘alone’ during my solo travels here, thanks to the friendly nature of those I met.

You’ll Never Get Bored

For such a compact city, Edinburgh certainly doesn’t disappoint in terms of things to do. If you’re looking to make friends quickly, join one of the infamous bar crawls around the city for a good time and amazing people (the tour guides even wear kilts during some!)

There’s also a variety of walking tours you can choose during your stay. I joined a few free walking tours (meaning you pay what you want at the end).

The classic city walking tour takes you to a few must-see spots, such as Greyfriars Kirkyard and to some of the hidden closes (side alleyways). I also joined the Harry Potter walking tour, which is a must if you’re a fan like me!

To get out for the day, I also booked a full-day tour to the Highlands and returned in the evening to do a haunted Night Bus tour.

With so many options for day trips, distillery tours, train journeys, and restaurants to see and visit in the city, you’ll never get bored here as a solo traveler.

Hostel Culture

Hundreds of travelers venture to Scotland each year in search of picturesque landscapes and quaint cities.

Whether you visit in the summer for the Fringe Festival season or in the winter for the Christmas markets, there will always be solo travelers around.

With a few well-rated hostels dotted around the city, there’s a variety of options in Edinburgh for those traveling alone.

I had a good time staying at Kickass Greyfriars in the Old Town, which hosted weekly events for travelers to meet and had a buzzing beer garden out back.

There are many other options, depending on what you’re looking for, that also have a lot to offer solo travelers.

A friend I had met on the Highland tour was staying at another local hostel that held weekly bar crawls around the city: so there will be a chance to meet others!

A visit to Panama City will land you in the middle of a cultural crossroads, including one of the oldest and largest Chinese communities in Latin America.

Of course, a visit to Panama is not complete without witnessing the wonder that is the Panama Canal, and Miraflores Visitor Center is the popular choice and easily reachable from the city by public transportation or a tour.

The Bougie on a Budget Traveler:

While Panama is not the cheapest destination in Latin America, it’s still easy to visit here on a budget. Even in Panama City’s trendy Casco Viejo, you can find hostels and apartments at a low price, and transportation is extremely cheap.

Uber is very low cost, and if you stick to the local and street foods, you can easily not break the bank on dining. Tip: Casco Viejo has no end of rooftop bars to catch the views; head to one of the lower-priced ones (such as a hostel) for cheap drinks.

Reaching the other areas of Boquete and Bocas del Toro can be done by long bus trips for those on a budget, although if you price watch, you can get flights at a good deal.

One area that might be a splurge is the stunning San Blas Islands (Guna Yala), so make sure to do plenty of research to find out how to save costs here if needed.

The Nature Lover:

With a northern neighbor as famous as Costa Rica, it only makes sense that Panama would also be full of nature to marvel at. Over sixty percent of Panama is actually covered in forest, more so than any other country in Latin America, and even the city has a rainforest and Natural Park just a stone’s throw away.

Many visitors (myself included) have said that they saw more wildlife in Panama than in Costa Rica, and at a fraction of the cost. The country has sixteen national parks, each offering some stunning views and an abundance of wildlife, with rainforest and tropical reefs to explore.

Hikers love to head to Boquete, the small coffee town nestled in the mountains popular with expats and retirees. But do take care on the trails, as there have been some notorious incidents here in the past.

The Solo Female Traveler:

As one of the safest countries in Latin America, Panama is a great choice for the solo female traveler. Almost everyone is fluent in English, and ride-share apps are available and very cheap.

Public transportation is easy to navigate, and the metro in Panama City is surprisingly modern and safe. Getting around the country is made easy by overnight busses or flights, and you will see many other solo travelers in the hubs of Bocas Del Toro, Boquete, and Panama City.

Keep in mind that Panama City has many areas you shouldn’t venture to, although it’s unlikely any tourist really would. Stick to the beaten path here in places such as Casco Viejo and you will be fine, just don’t be alarmed at all the armed guards that patrol the area.

Of course, there are areas of the country that are a no-go, including the Darien Gap, which is an important and very treacherous area south of the country. This is where hundreds of thousands of immigrants make a treacherous journey en route to America, and no average tourist would go here anyway, so just be aware.

The Beach Bum:

The long S-shaped isthmus of Panama is a world-famous example of what happens when two major marine environments are separated by a rather narrow piece of land.

With the Caribbean Sea to its north and the Pacific to its south, Panama has its fair share of beaches. With a total coastline of nearly 3,000 kilometers, those who are looking for some beaches are spoiled for choice.

Just outside Panama City, you can take a day trip to the charming Taboga Island or stay closer to town on one of the many beaches and watch the tankers roll in, waiting for their turn to enter the canal.

True beach lovers know that the paradise is a bit further from the city and can be found in the otherworldly San Blas Islands (otherwise known as Guna Yala). This archipelago lies in the Caribbean Sea and is made up of tiny islands scattered amongst 400km of crystal clear water. Getting to San Blas is a bit of a trek, but is very much worth it. Many opt for a multi-day sailing trip en route to Colombia.

Another famous beach destination is Bocas del Toro, up in the north of the country just across the border from Costa Rica. A popular backpacker destination, Bocas del Toro is a small piece of the mainland with an archipelago of many islands, most of which you can visit via small water taxis.

While the main town of Bocas might get a bit congested, spread out and get to other small islands and you are much more likely to fall in love with Bocas. Starfish Beach and Playa Bluff are popular spots to spend the day, but venturing further off-path will result in more nature and fewer crowds.

The Pacific side of Panama also has some great beaches, some better suited for surfing and others for swimming. Santa Clara & Farallón are both good options and are within a 3-hour drive of Panama City.

The First Timer:

Panama is an ideal choice for travelers who are looking to dip their toes in the waters of Latin America and might feel a bit intimidated by all the diverse and amazing options.

The official currency in Panama is the USD, and nearly everyone speaks English, making it easier than in other countries in the region for the first-time traveler.

Ride-share apps are easy to use and help to navigate the big city, and the rest of the country is well laid out for a tourist route, so you will likely be surrounded by others in case you feel a bit overwhelmed.

While the country of Panama is safe, of course, no place is perfect, so remember that normal precautions apply, and keep that in mind when traveling throughout the country.

5 Important Things I Learned As A Solo Female Traveler In Turkey

I had a crush on Turkey from the moment I arrived bleary-eyed on the overnight train from Bulgaria. A few hours later, I’d finished my first Turkish breakfast, and quickly realized I was in love.

After 5 years and 40 countries of full-time international travel, Turkey ranks in my top 10 destinations for solo female travelers.

Here’s why:

1. It’s Safer Than You Think.

A traveler is 8 times safer from violent crime in Turkey than in the U.S., even in big cities like Istanbul and Izmir.

Based on my personal experience traveling across Turkey, I’d say you’re more in danger from kofte kebab food coma or kitten cuteness exposure than any street crime here.

Before coming to Turkey, I’d been cautioned time and time again with vague fear-mongering: “You know what they say about Turkish men.” Let me tell you: nothing could have been further from the truth.

These common ‘warnings’ are discriminatory, inaccurate, and might prevent you from experiencing some of the best hospitality in the world.

I’ve felt safer walking down the street alone in Turkey day or night than in Italy, Spain, or Greece. There have been exactly two mild street harassment incidents in my five months traveling in Turkey over the past year – both by foreigners, with Turkish men who didn’t even know me stepping in to help.

Of course, travelers should take reasonable safety precautions everywhere they go. The few things I wouldn’t advise while traveling in Turkey right now are:
- Visiting Istanbul’s Taksim area alone after 10 pm on weekends
- Leaving your valuables vulnerable to easy pickpocketing
- Taking drinks from strangers in bars or clubs
- Public displays of affection in LGBTQIA+ relationships outside of major chain hotels
- Visiting certain parts of southeastern Turkey near the Syrian border region (due to the presence of terrorist groups and earthquake devastation)
2. Women Are Welcome And Protected In Turkish Mosques.

If you do find yourself walking alone at night and feeling unsure or unsafe for whatever reason, the abundance of mosques in Turkey offer you an amazing safe haven.

Many large mosques remain open through the night. As long as you’re dressed modestly, remove your shoes, and have a scarf handy, you can respectfully duck into one of these well-lit houses of worship to be sure of your safety at almost any hour.

To be clear: I don’t advocate treating a holy masjid as an alternative to a police station. Travelers in obvious danger should call emergency services. But for those all-too-familiar gray zone situations that simply give solo female travelers a bad gut feeling, it’s nice to know that you have safe places to turn to without ringing any alarm bells.

3. You Don’t Need To Choose Between Tea And Coffee.

It’s no surprise that Turkey is a country of tea lovers. The average Turk drinks 1,300 cups of tea each year. Turkey is even home to a tea museum in the shape of a 7-story tea glass in the ‘tea capital’ of Rize. It should then come as no surprise that travelers will find themselves offered a warm welcome tea everywhere they go.

The beautiful thing about Turkey is that this country embraces both tea and coffee. No need to take sides. Simply enjoy both!

From iconic Turkish coffee in an Izmir antique shop to artisan roast flat whites in Moda’s plentiful third wave coffee shops, there’s some java here for every type of traveler.

4. Multicultural Turkish Cities Offer A Safe Way To Explore Syrian Culture.

While Syria isn’t a recommended destination for solo female travelers at the moment, multicultural cities in Turkey certainly are. They offer a safe and fascinating opportunity to try Syrian food, have conversations with Syrian refugees and immigrants, and learn more about the Syrian diaspora.

Recommended activities include:

There are about 4 million Syrians living in Turkey, creating an amazing multicultural opportunity for travelers. However, it’s important to note that many Turks will still make negative comments to visitors about Syrians in their country.

“Turkish society’s acceptance of Syrians has largely been transformed into ‘toleration’ rather than an understanding of establishing a practice of living together,” explained a study from UNHCR.

When traveling in Istanbul, you may hear locals tell you that Fatih, a predominantly Arab and Syrian neighborhood, is ‘not really Turkey’ or isn’t ‘what it used to be.’ Some Turks will voice concerns about Syrians putting pressure on social services or job markets or bringing what they perceive as an incompatibly conservative culture to their city.

Try not to let this tension prevent you from enjoying two amazing cultures in one trip.

5. Turkey Is So Much More Than Istanbul.

Many travelers don’t realize just how big Turkey is. With nearly 800 square kilometers of ancient cities, surreal moonscapes, and more beaches than you could count, this country has so much more to offer than its popular capital Istanbul.

Many will tell you to save money by eating at the local restaurant,s or Sodas, but I have found that if you are in or around the tourist towns, these can still run you around $20 for two lunches. While this price tag is fine for many, the true-budget backpacker might find this too expensive, so having a kitchen (or even a hotplate) will help out a lot in this department.

Traveling the country via the local ‘chicken’ busses also cuts down on costs dramatically, not to mention the experience of riding through the countryside with locals on an old American school bus really can’t be missed.

Also, while many of the popular attractions do cost money to enter, there are free options in each town worth exploring. All it takes is a little homework (for example, the free hot springs in La Fortuna is a popular budget option).

These Are The Top Cities You Should Avoid As A Budget Traveler

With a travel industry more geared toward big spenders and the luxury segment, Americans are looking for cheaper destinations that will not be too hard on their wallets. The average cost of vacations has increased across the board, but the situation is particularly dire in eleven cities that are, in a way, a budget traveler’s worst nightmare.

After restrictions were eased and normal tourism resumed, demand for international travel went through the roof, and prices soon followed in an upward trend. There are still some pretty decent deals to be found, especially when expert advice is considered, but it’s a well-established fact the era of low-cost travel is nearing its end.

For young backpackers, digital nomads starting a business, or simply big savers, this means picking their next destination carefully:

Three U.S. Cities Among The World’s Most Expensive To Live

As customary, The Economist has just revealed the world’s top ten most expensive cities to live (and visit) right now, and a few of America’s favorite holiday escapes have made the list. Looking at the available data between August 16th and September 16th, researchers tracked prices of ‘over 200 goods and services’ across 172 cities.

This year, the ‘most expensive’ of those surveyed were:
1. Singapore (Rank: 1, Index: 100)
2. New York, USA (Rank: 1, Index: 100)
3. Tel Aviv, Israel (Rank: 3, Index: 99)
4. Hong Kong (Rank: 4, Index: 98)
5. Los Angeles, USA (Rank: 4, Index: 98)
6. Zurich, Switzerland (Rank: 6, Index: 94)
7. Geneva, Switzerland (Rank: 7, Index: 91)
8. San Francisco, USA (Rank: 8, Index: 85)
9. Paris, France (Rank: 9, Index: 84)
10. Copenhagen, Denmark (Rank: 10, Index: 83)
11. Sydney, Australia (Rank: 10, Index: 83)
Top 5 Travel Insurance Plans For 2023 Starting At $10 Per Week

The list above comprises the ‘top ten positions’ for the most expensive destinations, though it features eleven entries. In other words, different cities may share the same podium, such as Singapore and New York, which rank together at number one with an index of 100. Similarly, Hong Kong and Los Angeles both chart at number 4 due to their identical index of 98.

The higher the index, the more prohibitive prices are.

Why Is New York The World’s Most Expensive Destination Right Now?

In calculating the index, the Economist Intelligence Unit analyzed prices for more than 200 ‘specified products and services’, including food, drink, transportation, and recreational activities during a six-month interval. Data was gathered from a ‘range of stores’, from mid-priced to higher-priced, in order to obtain the most accurate results.

Then, economists convert local prices into U.S. dollars in order to achieve a ‘comparative index’, using the highest-scoring cities (in this case, Singapore and New York) as reference points. Thus, results are influenced not only by higher inflation rates but the strength of any individual currency against the dollar and exchange rates at the time of conversion.

Naturally, New York rose to the top of the list as the dollar reached an all-time high in October, knocking Tel Aviv off the number one spot it occupied in last year’s ranking. Israel’s leading metropolitan hub and the most liberal city in the Middle East, Tel Aviv, is expected to see hotel prices skyrocket in 2023, alongside a number of tourist hotspots.

Out of all the major destinations eligible to feature, only Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, was not included due to the ongoing war against Russia. The Worldwide Cost of Living Survey (WCOL) concluded prices have risen up to 8.1% overall this year, in ‘local-currency terms’, while inflation has reached a 20-year high since the original study was published.

Helped by the dollar, other cities in the U.S. account for ‘six out of the ten’ of the ‘biggest movers up’ in the past 12 months:
- Atlanta (Index: 70, Rank move: 42)
- Charlotte (Index: 69, Rank move: 39)
- Indianapolis (Index: 69, Rank move: 39)
- San Diego (Index: 70, Rank move: 33)
- Portland (Index: 70, Rank move: 30)
- Boston (Index: 78, Rank move: 29)
Interestingly, the Mexican capital of Mexico City also hiked 33 spots in a single year, propelled by Mexico’s interest-rate hikes, known to have supported the Mexican peso (as attested by The Economist) and the fading demand for budget travel in Mexico. This year, it has a price index of 71, higher than five of the six U.S. cities featured on the ‘climbers’ list.

Conversely, the twelve cities in the ‘bottom top ten’ positions were the following:
1. Damascus, Syria (Rank: 172, Index: 11)
2. Tripoli, Libya (Rank: 171, Index: 22)
3. Tehran, Iran (Rank: 170, Index: 23)
4. Tunis, Tunisia (Rank: 169, Index: 30)
5. Tashkent, Uzbekistan (Rank: 168, Index: 31)
6. Karachi, Pakistan (Rank: 167, Index: 32)
7. Almaty, Kazakhstan (Rank: 166, Index: 34)
8. Ahmedabad, India (Rank: 165, Index: 35)
9. Chennai, India (Rank: 164, Index: 37)
10. Algiers, Algeria (Rank: 161, Index: 38)
11. Bangalore, India (Rank: 161, Index: 38)
12. Colombo, Sri Lanka (Rank: 161, Index: 38)
Damascus, Tripoli, and Tehran are this year’s cheapest destinations, resulting from their respective countries’ weak currencies and unstable economies. The U.S. strongly discourages travel to these three cities in light of their ongoing political turmoils, notably Tehran, where widespread protests have erupted recently.
