Machu Picchu Reopens To Travelers, But Should You Wait To Visit?

The news coming out of Peru has not been very promising in recent months, with protests gripping the country, forcing the closure of the country’s most famous site, Machu Picchu, and bringing tourism to a halt. However, the recent announcement that the famed archeological site will reopen to tourists Wednesday, February 15th is a long overdue piece of good news to both Peruvians and tourists alike.

After the political upheaval of president Pedro Castillo and the following protests and riots that gripped the country, the situation in Peru seemed dire. The following days brought riots and dangerous attacks widespread around the country, including at the airport serving the popular tourist town of Cusco, as well as the suspension of the train connecting travelers to the Machu Picchu gateway town of Aguas Calientes. All of these factors combined led to the decision to close the ancient UNESCO world heritage site of Machu Picchu indefinitely from January 20th.

Background

The protests stem from a longstanding divide over social inequality and discrimination amongst the 34 million Peruvians, most notably those who live in poorer rural areas and in the Amazon. In addition, the deep mistrust of the country’s politicians is a result of years of mismanagement and corruption. The combined factors resulted in civil unrest that gripped the country.

When the civil unrest started, many heading to Peru watched the news and monitored social media only to hear stories of stranded tourists, and volatile situations. This and the closure of Machu Picchu (arguably the country’s biggest draw) led to most travelers canceling their trips. The loss of tourism revenue has sent many in the country struggling to stay afloat, having only just gotten back on their feet after the crippling effects of the pandemic. Tourist hotspot Cusco has been especially hurt, with travel guides, shop owners, and guest houses feeling the effect almost immediately.

What’s worse is that this closure and unrest have coincided with what is known to be the area’s peak tourism season. Financial hits aside, the greatest loss is arguably the estimated 60 who have perished in the violence. Having hosted 1.4 million tourists in 2022, the country was forecasted to receive about 3.5 million visitors in 2023. With the essential closure of the tourism sector so far this year, it will be hard to catch up to the projected number.

What’s Changed?

After the evacuation of tourists, a massive drop in bookings and incoming travel followed. Recently an agreement was reached between authorities, the local tourism industry, and social groups to help ensure the security of the infamous site and its connecting transportation services.

However, while Machu Picchu has reopened, there are still factors to consider when deciding if it’s time to book (or rebook) that trip to Peru anytime soon. While most of Peru’s beloved tourist attractions are open for visitors, other sites, such as Lake Titicaca, are not currently assessable via Peru (travelers must currently enter from La Paz, Bolivia if planning a visit). While protesters may have agreed to stay away from the tourist sites, protests continue in the south of the country, including in the capital of Lima.

Is it safe?

The U.S. State department’s last advisory for Peru was issued on December 22, 2022. The country was given an orange Level 3 warning, urging citizens to reconsider travel to Peru due to crime/ While the UK is advising its citizens who travel to Peru to avoid protests, monitor local media, and stay away from any of the unpredictable and violent protests in many areas of the country.

The bottom line is that travel remains a very personal choice, and at any given time, there are multiple situations occurring across the world that could be unpredictable. The most important thing to remember when considering a trip to any location that might be considered unsafe is to keep an eye on the official sources and the State Department’s official website for any latest travel advisories and remain on top of all reputable news channels.

The situation in Peru is very fluid and changing day by day. While Machu Picchu might be open today, it is impossible to determine if it will remain open in a week’s time. If you are contemplating booking a trip to Peru, consider spending the extra money for a refundable ticket or travel insurance to cover any cancelations. While operations are starting to resume, fewer air services, reduced timetables, and possible roadblocks might lead to a need to change your plans at the last minute. In addition, building some flexibility into your travel itinerates is crucial if you plan to visit Peru in the upcoming months.

Miami Beach, Florida

Most spring breakers have been to Miami Beach, but have you been to the South of Fifth neighborhood of Miami Beach? This is the perfect place to meet other solo travelers looking for a good time. Stay at The Balfour Hotel Miami Beach, a historic art-deco wonder with only 82 guest rooms. Designed by Anton Skislewicz (a pioneer in the art-deco movement on the beach) in 1940, it has a unique style that screams “let’s hang out.”

Another spot in the neighborhood is Minibar. Located on Meridian and 5th street, it’s the type of place you go to and ends up making friends with everyone from the bartender to folks next to you.

Guadalajara, Mexico

Another great city in Jalisco is Guadalajara. If you’ve been to Mexico City and liked it, you’ll love this equally impressive counterpart. Walk through the historic city center, where you can visit spots like the UNESCO World Heritage Site Museo Cabañas and the golden-hued Palacio de Gobierno.

You can crash at the super modern brutalist-inspired Bellwort Hotel, located pretty much in the middle of everything. Madrid, Spain

The capital of Spain has some different attractions for solo travelers and is often known as a safe alternative for them. It’s a must-visit if you’re planning to cascade through western Europe. Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

These Are The Cheapest Countries In Southeast Asia For Travelers On A Budget

Now that travelers are ready to take to the skies, the costs associated with international travel have increased drastically. A majority of borders have reopened, but on the downside, an overpriced Europe or the Caribbean is no longer an option for many budget-conscious travelers.

Fortunately, Southeast Asia (SEA) remains a highly affordable destination. Across numerous countries, most Americans are able to enjoy a higher purchasing power and better quality of life, thanks to the strong dollar and the subcontinent’s surprisingly economical luxury amenities.

But where exactly in Southeast Asia will you get the best bang for your buck? It’s time we found out:

All Of Southeast Asia Ranked From Least To Most Expensive

There are eleven Southeast Asian countries in total, and if you’re wondering where they may be headed when attempting to stretch their dollars further, these are the safest bets: Indonesia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Malaysia. According to figures posted by Numbeo, the largest crowd-sourced database for information on global cities, these are the cheapest destinations for travelers in SEA.

The complete ranking of countries can be seen below, from most to least affordable, followed by the cost of living (COL) percentage compared to the U.S average:
1. Indonesia – 55.9% cheaper
2. Myanmar – 54.9% cheaper

4. Vietnam – 50.8% cheaper
5. Malaysia – 50.7% cheaper
6. Thailand – 42.9% cheaper
7. Cambodia – 39.5% cheaper
8. Laos – 24.7% cheaper

10. Singapore – 18.2% cheaper
11. Timor Leste – Not enough data
There is not enough data on Timor Leste on Numbeo, though it could be up to 76% less expensive than the United States, according to an alternative source, Living Cost. If this were to be considered, it would place Timor Leste as the cheapest destination in all of Southeast Asia by a wide margin, almost 16 percentage points ahead of Indonesia, assuming calculation methods are similar.

Indonesia Is The Cheapest Southeast Asian For Tourists

Home to beautiful islands like Bali and Java, known for their sandy beaches, turquoise waters, and laid-back culture, as well as vibrant city breaks bustling with trade and interesting sights — with Jakarta and Yogyakarta to name a couple — Indonesia appeals to travelers of different ages and all walks of life, though it is particularly favored by long-term travelers.

While prices in Indonesia can vary drastically between provinces, rent is, on average, 80.9% lower than in the U.S. Looking at specific cities, Jakarta, the capital and largest financial center, is 63.7% cheaper to explore than New York, with rent being up to 83.3% lower. Living comfortably in the Big Apple would require a minimum of USD$9,100 per month; in Jakarta, USD$2,430 would suffice.

Indonesia’s new Digital Nomad Visa, which allows remote workers and entrepreneurs to reside in destinations like Bali effectively tax-free for five years, has also helped establish Indonesia as SEA’s number one budget-friendly vacation: it is officially the most sought-after winter sun destination on AirBnB.

Moving further down the list, the lesser-known Myanmar (previously known as Burma) takes the runner-up slot, boasting some of Asia’s oldest pagodas dating back to the 6th century and a promising city destination in Yangon, the renamed capital (formerly Rangoon). Sadly, Myanmar (Burman) remains a risky destination for tourists due to armed conflict and ongoing civil unrest.

The Philippines occupies the third spot, offering a plethora of beach sites and tropical landscapes for a small fraction of Thailand’s or Cambodia’s prices, even though they already fall within the budget category. Vietnam and Malaysia round out the top five, standing among SEA’s trendiest: other than being inexpensive to visit, they are open and restriction-free.

The least affordable in Southeast Asia is, unsurprisingly, its most developed economy: the city-state of Singapore, named the world’s most expensive in 2022.

The Triumphant Return Of Southeast Asia

Southeast Asia is one of the trendiest tourist destinations for 2023 now that most nations within the territory have loosened their once-strict COVID curbs. Traveling to a majority of them, Americans are no longer required to undergo grueling testing regimes or check into quarantine facilities. Most importantly, they no longer face vaccine discrimination, a hard no for restriction-wary Americans returning to Asia.

There’s no denying that Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, and Malaysia having changed their hard stance on health crisis management was a powerful driving force behind the regional tourism rebound, but it’s not the only factor behind it: all of America’s preferred holiday spots, from Mexico’s Caribbean Coast to the European Mediterranean, have seen vacation package prices soar in recent months.

Imagine a world with no Yellowstone National Park, Stonehenge, Machu Picchu, or Egypt’s Pyramids. While it is easy to take some of these destinations for granted, their survival is not guaranteed. Luckily, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization, better known as UNESCO, works to identify, protect, and preserve cultural and natural heritage around the world.

What A UNESCO Designation Means

The idea behind UNESCO is to promote peace and security by increasing intercultural education and understanding of our shared world heritage. In an attempt to safeguard our world heritage for ourselves and for future generations, UNESCO designates certain sites of cultural and natural importance to its World Heritage List. Ideally, sites on the list receive special protection through their recognition, but that is not always the case.

UNESCO World Heritage In Danger

In addition to maintaining the World Heritage List, UNESCO also identifies sites that are in danger. Development, conflict, and natural disasters are all reasons why a World Heritage Site could be in danger. Just this week, UNESCO placed three new sites on the list of World Heritage In Danger.

The Ukranian Port City of Odessa, the Landmarks of the Ancient Kingdom of Saba in Yemen, and the Rachid Karameh International Fair of Tripoli in Lebanon were all simultaneously given UNESCO status and placed on the World Heritage In Danger list. If urgent action is not taken, these important sites could be damaged or lost forever.

Some of the sites on the World Heritage in Danger list are currently not safe for tourists to visit because of political conflict. However, many of the sites are accessible and can be rewarding destinations to visit. We’ve included some of each in hopes that political conflicts will give way to peace so that we can explore all the beautiful sites the world has to offer.

- Why is it in danger: The integrity of Vienna’s Historic Center has been under threat since 2017 because of the development of the close proximity of high-rise buildings and development.
- How to visit: Vienna is best explored on foot, and when visitors are in need of a break, the top things to do are enjoy coffee and people watching at a cafe or listening to some live music at one of the many concert halls.

The Old City Of Jerusalem And Its Walls

- Why is it in danger: Chan Chan is under threat of loss because of the high rate of deterioration due to a lack of conservation and maintenance.
- How to visit: Be sure to stop at the site’s museum to see how people lived at Chan Chan. The archaeological site is extensive and exposed to the elements – so bring sunscreen, a hat, and water if you plan on exploring.
Cultural Landscape And Archaeological Remains Of The Bamiyan Valley, Afghanistan
- What is it: The Bamiyan Valley’s eight archaeological sites include ancient Buddhist monasteries carved into cliffs, cave art, and giant Buddha statues. For many centuries, the Bamiyan Valley was an important Buddhist pilgrimage site.
- Why is it in danger: The Bamiyan Valley suffered great losses in 2001 when Taliban bombings deliberately destroyed two giant Buddha statues.
- How to visit: Even though the Buddha statues have been destroyed, the site is still worth a visit. However, given Afghanistan’s current political climate, now is not a safe time to visit.

While the biggest parties take place when the moon is full, there are parties pretty much all the time. Not surprisingly, Koh Phangan also throws an epic party on New Year’s Eve.

Tulum, Mexico

Tulum’s party scene has become incredibly popular over the past several years. When much of the world was closed to travelers because of the pandemic, Mexico remained open. Once laid-back, Tulum grew and grew as a party location. Visitors will now find businesses that cater to partygoers, and plenty of parties, raves, and festivals to choose from.

In fact, this month will see one of the region’s biggest festivals. The organizers behind Tomorrowland are bringing an offshoot of the popular festival to the jungles of Tulum.
