However, many American tourists have shown that they prefer to visit them during the winter months when the temperatures are more manageable, and the crowd levels are much lower.

The Archeological Sites

One of the main reasons to visit Athens is for its stunning archeological sites. The city is the birthplace of democracy and home to some of the greatest examples of classical art and architecture in the world.

The most popular of these archeological sites is the Acropolis, which is an ancient citadel located on a rocky outcrop above the city.

This site is so popular that the government has introduced a daily cap of 20,000 to the site in order to limit the crowds.

Restaurants packed with locals almost always offer the best value and the best dishes too.

Shop In The Markets

If you’re shopping for luxury goods, there are better places to visit in Europe. But if you’re looking for gems and quirky pieces, the markets of Athens are well worth exploring.

You can chat with stallholders, look at unusual items, and get a real taste of Athenian culture. Many of these markets are popular with locals as well as tourists.

The markets in Athens are a great place to buy souvenirs while learning about the products and their origin and meaning, often from those who made or produced them.

Excellent Nightlife

If you want to party the night away, then Athens is a great place to be. The nightlife here is legendary and for good reason.

Just don’t expect an early night as most bars don’t get the party started until around 10pm when the daily temperatures have cooled, so you’ll be partying until the early hours.

Some of the best nightlife spots in the city include Kavouras bar for live Greek music and the 360 Cocktail Bar above Monastiraki Square, where the drinks are as good as the incredible views of the city.

Beautiful Beaches

Because Athens has a reputation for being a grimy, urban city, people often don’t realize just how close the city is to the coast. Less than 14 km south of the city center, you will find a beautiful stretch of golden sand beaches with blue-flag-certified clean waters.

The cove of Skalakia Agias Marinas is one of the most beautiful and famous of these.

The beaches of Athens are great place to enjoy water sports such as windsurfing and paddle boarding.

A Gateway To The Greek Islands

Athens is incredible but it is also a noisy, busy city with very little green space.

For this reason many travelers choose to use Athens as a stopover on route to a more relaxing vacation on one of the many Greek islands.

If you land in Athens, you could fly straight back to your preferred island. But most people choose to spend a few days exploring the city and then travel to the Greek islands by ferry. This tends to be not only cheaper but also a more picturesque way to travel.

Piraeus is Athens’s central port, but many ferries also depart from the ports of Rafina and Lavrion.

\America’s love affair with the UK capital shows no signs of abating, and for good reason.

London is a brilliant destination and home to some of the best museums and art galleries in the world. It also boasts a rich cultural heritage, fascinating historical attractions, and incredible architecture.

London is a diverse and welcoming city where tourists can be amazed by the huge variety of things to see and do.

What’s more, the shared language between the UK and the U.S. makes it an incredibly easy vacation destination for American travelers, particularly those making their first overseas trip.

London is followed in 2^nd place by its near-neighbor Paris, the city of love, which is also a perennially popular destination for U.S. travelers.

Paris is regularly listed as the number one bucket list destination for American tourists.

The popularity of Paris this year is also being bolstered as it is the host city for the Olympic Games this summer.

Paris is preparing for an estimated 15 million visitors to arrive for the games this summer, an incredible number given the city’s population of 12.4 million.

Unless you already have tickets or are a huge sports fan, Paris is best avoided between July and August this year.

Plan your bucket list visit for the fall instead.

Not only will the crowd levels be lower, but the temperatures are also better suited to sightseeing in this exciting and constantly surprising city.

A Big Surprise

If spots 1 and 2 for America’s favorite cities were expected, then the city in third place is sure to be a big surprise.

Tokyo is the third most popular destination for U.S. travelers this year, skyrocketing from last year’s 8^th place.

Given the long flight time between the U.S. and Japan, not to mention the costs involved in airfare between the two countries, it is a big surprise that Tokyo is so popular right now.

But Tokyo’s unique cultural experiences, diverse range of activities, and position in modern pop culture mean that people just can’t get enough of it right now.

Some of the must-visit attractions in the country include the Meiji Jingu Shrine, strolling around Ueno Park, or exploring the electronic wonderland of Akihabara.

If Tokyo is on your must-visit list, then the good news is that there’s never been a better time to visit Japan than as a U.S. traveler.

The yen has dropped to a 34-year low against the dollar.

Tokyo has a reputation for being one of the world’s most expensive cities but the weak value of the Yen means that goods, services, attractions and even hotel stays are cheaper than they have been for a long time.

In 4^th place is Rome and in 5^th place is New York. A spot that is much closer to home if the idea of flying half way across the world doesn’t appeal to you.

An Unexpected Drop

Perhaps another surprise is that Cancun has dropped into 6^th place on the list.

America is by far the most popular country of origin among international air passengers to Mexico in general and Cancun in particular. 4.2 million Americans visited the region in 2023.

As long as there is still sand on the beaches, Americans will continue to head to Cancun in their droves. The number of air links between the two countries are considerable and flights tend to be affordable too.

So why has the city dropped to be the 6^th most popular for American travelers when it was in 2^nd place last year? One thought is that some American tourists feel anxious about visiting Mexico right now due to reports of crime and warnings from the U.S. government.

In response to these concerns, the Mexican authorities have increased police and military presence in the city.

And crime rates in Cancun remain low, making it one of the safest resort cities in Mexico.

Washington, D.C. might not be the first place you think of when it comes to amazing travel destinations in the U.S., but you shouldn’t overlook the nation’s capital for a great solo trip.

D.C. has been exploding in popularity as a tourist destination lately, with a record number of visitor arrivals in 2023.

There are tons of amazing things to do in the city, and it’s a surprisingly excellent destination for solo travelers too.

I’ve spent a lot of time exploring D.C. on my own, and these are the top reasons I think it’s the perfect place to go as a solo traveler:

Lots Of Solo-Friendly Activities

One of the biggest reasons you should visit D.C. as a solo traveler is because of the abundance of solo-friendly activities and unique things to do around the city.

There are tons of museums and monuments around every corner, and as a solo traveler, you can pick and choose what you’re interested in. With over 70 museums around the city, you can spend several days checking out impressive collections.

Along the National Mall, you’ll find some of the best museums, including the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, the National Gallery of Art, and the National Air and Space Museum.

Checking out the city’s many monuments and memorials, including the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, and the World War II Memorial, is another must while in D.C.

You can even take a free tour of the White House, which was the coolest thing I did in D.C. — it just requires arranging it in advance (you can make a request 21 days to 3 months in advance, and it’s best to have some flexibility in the preferred dates and times of your visit.)

Easy To Get Around

Another reason I’d recommend D.C. for a solo trip is because it’s really easy to get around on your own. You don’t need a car, because it’s a very walkable city that also has good public transportation.

All of the museums and monuments mentioned above are walkable from each other.

If you want to give your feet a rest, you can also take D.C.’s Metro, which is well-connected and a quick way to get around the city.

It’s Very Safe

If you’re traveling on your own, especially as a solo female traveler, safety is probably a factor you take into consideration when choosing where to go.

D.C. is an extremely safe city, so you don’t have anything to worry about traveling here solo.

Obviously, you should always take safety precautions when traveling solo, but in general, D.C. is a very safe and secure place to visit.

Lots Of Different Neighborhoods

Washington, D.C. has a lot more to offer than just government buildings, museums, and monuments. Many of the top tourist attractions in D.C. are located in Downtown, which is why I’d recommend staying there as a first-time visitor.

Another great neighborhood to stay in is Georgetown. This historic neighborhood is a little further away from Downtown, but it’s incredibly picturesque and walkable.

While in D.C., you should also make sure to visit Chinatown and Dupont Circle, two other cool and lively neighborhoods.

Easy To Get To From Other Cities

Finally, D.C. is perfect for a solo trip because it’s easy to get to from other places in the U.S. More than 60 cities across the U.S. have regular nonstop flights to D.C.

There’s also a direct Metro line from the Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) to Downtown for just $6.

And if you’re already on the East Coast, you can take Amtrak to D.C. easily. The high-speed Acela train connects Boston, New York, and Philadelphia with D.C., while other Amtrak train lines connect Southern cities along the East Coast to D.C.

It’s one of the most sought-after vacation destinations in the world, and it’s easy to see why.

Turquoise waters and bright blue skies, whitewashed cities, and a laid-back way of life – what’s not to love?

If you’re looking for beautiful beaches spread over 160,000 kilometers of coastline and some of Europe’s most important cultural attractions then there’s nowhere better to be.

A Surge In American Travelers

Of course we’re talking about Greece.

Not only was 2023 a record year for tourism in the country, but Greece has started 2024 with a bang, too.

Historically, January is the slowest month for tourism in Greece, but this year, they have experienced the best January ever. 737.3 thousand overseas visitors arrived in the country in one month alone.

What’s more a huge number of those travelers were from the U.S.

Travelers to Greece from the United States in January increased by a whopping 260.2% year on year according to the Bank of Greece.

American travelers are also spending more in Greece than ever before, with expenditure up by 63.6%.

So why is Greece seeing such a huge surge in American travelers?

Easy To Reach

This year, there are more non-stop flights from the U.S. to Greece than ever.

Delta and American Airlines are offering non-stop flights from New York JFK.

If your starting point is Boston then you can take a daily flight with Delta. This is the fastest possible non-stop route between Greece and the U.S.

You can fly between Chicago or Philadelphia and Greece with American Airlines.

United Airlines offers a non-stop route from Washington. And if you want to head out from Atlanta then Delta is the airline for you.

All of these flights have Athens as their arrival city, which is a great place to start your Greek adventures. And from there it’s easy to reach almost any of the most beautiful Greek islands by jumping on a short flight or taking a passenger ferry.

A huge number of Greek island cruises from Athens depart from the port of Piraeus in the city too, so this is a great place to start if you want to hop from island to island and see as much as possible in your trip.

It’s also worth noting that U.S. travelers don’t need a visa to travel to Greece, which makes visiting the country even more straightforward.

A Rich Cultural Heritage

Cultural and historical destinations are always popular with American travelers. Greek is said to be the first and, therefore, oldest civilization in Europe.

Many important ancient attractions in the country are remarkably well-preserved thanks to its dry, Mediterranean climate, which means there is an abundance of things to see and do for culture vultures.

If you’re planning to island hop then you should schedule a couple of days in Athens first, as this is where you’ll find some of the most well-known and well-preserved cultural highlights of the country.

This includes the Acropolis and the Parthenon, a citadel which sits on a hilltop above the city. It’s worth noting that this is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Greece and visitors have been limited to 20,000 a day to tackle overtourism.

So, pre-book tickets and arrive early.

You can also explore the ancient Agora of Athens, which is the best-known example of an ancient Greek agora in the country. The Temple of Olympian Zeus is also based in the city and is a great spot for fans of ancient mythology.

Exceptional Islands

Greece is famed for its breathtakingly beautiful islands, and one of the most popular ways to explore the country is by going on an island-hopping tour.

Mykonos, Santorini, and Crete are the 3 most popular islands for American travelers interested in island hopping.

When you think of a typical white and blue Greek island, you’re probably thinking of Santorini.

Though it can become overcrowded during the summer months, this stunning island and its traditional architecture are well worth exploring.

As someone who has traveled solo to 50+ countries, there are many destinations I would not recommend for a first-time solo traveler.

However, the 5 countries below are some of the best places to start to ease yourself into solo travel. These destinations are safe, beautiful, and easy to travel solo.

Here’s where to go for your first solo trip this year:

1. United Kingdom

One of the top destinations I always recommend for first-time solo travelers is the UK.

For travelers coming from the United States, the UK is probably the “easiest” place you can travel abroad.

You don’t have to worry about any language barriers, it’s easy to get around on your own, there are tons of fun things to do for solo travelers, and it’s very safe.

London is a great place to base yourself on a solo trip to the UK, and there are lots of easy day trips you can take on the train from there.

You can also easily hop on the train and head up to Edinburgh, Scotland if you want to visit another UK destination too.

2. Mexico

Another great destination for first-time solo travelers is Mexico.

It’s a tourism powerhouse and English is widely spoken in the most popular beach destinations like Cancun, Tulum, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Vallarta, and Cabo.

In particular, Cancun and the Mexican Caribbean are perfect for your first solo trip. Gorgeous beaches, fun activities like visiting Mayan ruins, and delicious food await you in Mexico.

It’s also easy to meet other solo travelers while traveling in Mexico.

If you’d prefer a city break over beaches, Mexico City is also one of the top destinations in the country for solo travelers.

3. Thailand

The best country in Asia for first-time solo travelers is Thailand. Thailand, nicknamed the Land of Smiles, is safe and beautiful and has a well-trodden backpacker trail, making it very easy to get around and meet other travelers.

From the lively city of Bangkok to the mountains of the north to the stunning beaches and islands of the south, there is so much to explore in Thailand.

It’s also incredibly affordable, making it a great value destination for solo travelers.

4. Croatia

If you’re looking for one of the best European countries for your first solo trip, why not head to Croatia?

Croatia is among the safest countries in the world right now, making it a great destination for solo travel in Europe.

It’s also impossibly beautiful, with amazing towns like Dubrovnik and Split dotting the Adriatic Coast and beautiful national parks like Krka and Plitvice Lakes inland.

There’s a good level of English spoken in Croatia, and it’s easy to get around the country on your own by bus.

As a solo female traveler, I also felt incredibly safe here.

5. Peru

Finally, if you’re dreaming of South America, Peru is where I would start for a first-time solo traveler.

Peru has a well-developed tourism infrastructure so it’s easy to get around and book activities.

It’s also a destination where you can easily meet lots of other travelers.

This is a great destination for adventurous travelers. Trekking the Inca Trail to Macchu Picchu, hiking to Rainbow Mountain, surfing in Lima, and sandboarding in the desert in Huacachina are just a few of the epic activities that you can easily do solo in Peru.

Our southern neighbor handles negative press with grace and doesn’t always get the credit it deserves for providing top-notch getaways for all types of travelers.

That being said, one of the most popular travel trends is taking on adventures alone with Mexico being a top choice to do so.

Oaxaca

Rarely can a place so cultural become so trendy and hold on to its core identity, but that’s the case for Oaxaca.

No shiny skyscrapers, influx of Starbucks at every corner, or sky-high prices overcharging tourists to be found here.

A city proud of its roots and even more proud to showcase its fascinating history through cultural sites and experiences, Oaxaca welcomes tourists with open arms with a shot of mezcal and warm hospitality.

One of the safest cities in Mexico, it is a place where solo travelers don’t have to keep their heads on a swivel while perusing the timeless streets, which is a key reason why digital nomads love it.

Upon landing, Tulum is still as incredible as ever for a beach getaway with a welcoming, artsy community.

Solo travelers do tend to be on a budget since there are rarely split expenses unless you meet some like-minded pals on your trip.

There may be some sticker shock in Tulum at times, but that’s what tends to happen when a destination surges in popularity.

Puerto Escondido

The state of Oaxaca is seeing hordes of travelers from Oaxaca City to its stunning coastline.

Puerto Escondido used to be a sleepy beach town, but it has certainly grown in popularity in recent years.

Digital nomads may be to blame as they let the secret out on this lovely paradisal beach getaway.

While it’s not as affordable as it used to be, it’s definitely not on par with say, Los Cabos.

Cancun is an amazing destination year-round, but there may be no better beach weather than summer.

Mexico City is the perfect stomping grounds for solo travelers to stay busy exploring one of the largest cities in the world.

Bustling markets, endless street food, stunning architecture, and world-renowned museums are just the tip of the iceberg.

Even for such a gargantuan city, Mexico City is widely considered safe, and it’s easy to get around with a dirt-cheap metro and Uber throughout the city.

Travelers Can Now Visit This Unknown Region of Japan Thanks To Newly Opened Bullet Train

While it’s common knowledge now that travel is back with a bang, there’s one destination in particular that seems to have secured its place on every bucket list and “best destinations” index.

I’m talking about Japan, of course, the iconic Asian country beloved for its breathtaking temples, ultra-advanced cities, and spectacularly beautiful nature destinations.

Tourist favorites like Kyoto, Osaka, and Tokyo never cease to be trendy.

With surging tourist arrivals, the country has recently introduced new regulations to prevent negative impacts from potential overtourism.

But even with all the hype around this beautiful nation, there still remain regions that have slipped under the radar and feel off the beaten path.

Chances are you’ve never heard of the Fukui prefecture in Japan–and neither have most people, which means you’ll enjoy fewer tourists at cultural attractions and more solitude in nature.

The Fukui region may not be a household name like Tokyo, but it is full of awe-inspiring highlights like must-try fresh Echizen crab dishes, crumbling ruins, ancient temples, and Maruoka Castle, one of the twelve original castles of Japan.

The New Bullet Train Launch Makes It Easier To Visit Fukui Prefecture Than Ever Before

Japan’s lightning-fast and undeniably efficient shinkansen (bullet) trains make getting around the country quick and easy.

And as of March 16th, the highly anticipated 78-mile addition to the previous Tokyo-Kanazawa route is officially open.

This extension connects the Fukui prefecture to the rest of Japan via bullet train, making it easier than ever to explore the lesser known region.

The shinkansen’s new service will run 14 round trips per day between Tokyo and Tsuruga, which takes just over 3 hours to reach from Japan’s capital.

Prior to this launch, there was limited express train service connecting these cities, but the new bullet train cuts an hour off the travel times and provides a new, direct connection.

So, what makes this hidden region worth visiting?

Authentic Zen Buddhism Temple Experiences

If wandering through a peaceful, active monastery and ornate temple complex tucked away in the forest sounds like a dream to you, the Eiheiji Temple is a place you won’t want to miss.

Nestled in the forested hills outside the city of Fukui, this 12th-century temple can be explored in the afternoon and is one of the two head temples for Soto Zen Buddhism.

Eiheji is made up of 70 individual buildings connected by walkways and can be easily reached by direct bus from Fukui station; it takes 30 minutes and will cost 750 yen.

The Land of Dinosaurs

Another key attraction of the region is the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum, which is located in Katsuyama.

Fukui earned its nickname of the country’s dinosaur capital for a good reason–80% of all the dinosaur fossils in Japan, including 5 new species, were found here.

With 4 floors, animatronic dinosaurs, and some 40 skeletons, four of which are made entirely from original bones, this fascinating museum is one of the best in its category.

Rugged Sea Cliffs

A quick adventure from Fukui station will land you at the 10 million-year-old rock formations of Tojinbo Cliffs in Echizen Kagakaigan Quasi National Park

Travelers craving a nature fix can head here for an epic sunset over the Sea of Japan, reveling in the unique beauty of the rocky columns and honeycombed formations carved by the ocean.

A short hike from the sea cliffs is Oshima Island, easily reached by a lovely pedestrian bridge that can’t be missed.

This tiny serene island is navigable by hiking paths and home to a beautiful forest shrine that is well worth a visit when exploring the area.

Relax In The Hotsprings Of Awara

If you’ve got the time and are craving a traditional Japanese spa experience, taking the new shinkansen to Awara is a great addition to a trip.

This city is renowned for its mineral-rich hot springs, which visitors can soak in, as well as the traditional ryokan inns.

Aside from its appeal as a wellness destination, Awara also boasts the Kanaz Forest of Creation.

This unique art exhibition spans a 200-meter forest and features site-specific art installations and sculptures interspersed with nature.

Visitors can also take hands-on workshops to learn glassblowing, ceramics, and other craft forms.

Whether you want to visit Fukui as a day trip or add a few days to your itinerary to experience all the prefecture has to offer, this hidden gem is a must-see before it becomes popular!

Is Egypt Safe For Solo Female Travelers? 9 Things Women Need To Know

Is Egypt safe for solo female travelers?

I’ve been to 50+ countries around the world as a solo female traveler, but I have to admit, I was a little apprehensive about traveling to Egypt alone.

So I booked a 10-day group tour of the country to start off with, followed by some exploring on my own.

And I honestly have to say that while I loved Egypt and would not hesitate to return one day, it was one of the most challenging and exhausting countries I’ve ever been to at the same time.

Overall, I don’t think it’s a good destination for the majority of solo female travelers, but that shouldn’t discourage you from visiting at all.

Here are the most important things you should know about solo female travel and safety in Egypt:

1. It’s Safe, But It’s Not For The Faint Of Heart

Egypt is safe for solo female travelers, but I wouldn’t recommend it for the majority of women.

You should only go to Egypt solo if you’re extremely assertive, confident, and experienced traveling on your own.

This isn’t a good first-time solo travel destination.

While I never felt physically unsafe in Egypt, the constant staring, comments, and hassling from men grew tiresome and was unlike anything I’d experienced elsewhere in the world.

2. Scams Abound

One thing you should know about Egypt before you go is that tourist scams abound.

This won’t be an issue as long as you come prepared and know how to identify and avoid scams.

Never get into a taxi without agreeing on a price with the driver beforehand.

Know that if a vendor offers you a “gift,” it’s not actually going to be free, so just ignore them and walk on by.

And if you are shopping in the markets, get ready for some hardcore haggling and never agree to the first (or second, or third) price you’re quoted.

3. You Need To Be Assertive

Egypt is a destination where you need to be on your guard all the time and where you must be comfortable being assertive, even if it feels “rude.”

If you don’t totally ignore vendors in the street or firmly tell them “no” and keep walking, they will follow you and keep pestering you endlessly.

Don’t fall prey to the high-pressure sales tactics that vendors will use as you walk down the street or through markets and remember you can always walk away.

4. Tipping Is A Way Of Life

Tipping is a huge part of the culture in Egypt, and there’s really no way around it.

If you visit Egypt on a guided tour as I did, your guide will likely take up a collection of tips for everyone (mine was $75 per person for a 10-day tour) and take care of distributing them to drivers, porters, waiters, and so on.

To use any restroom in Egypt, you’ll also usually need to tip the attendant a small amount (5 to 10 Egyptian pounds, or $0.10 to $0.20.)

Going back to point #3 above, don’t be afraid to push back and say no if someone like a tour guide demands more money after you’ve already tipped them.

5. Dress Conservatively

Egypt was the first Middle Eastern country I traveled to, and I knew it would be important to dress conservatively.

But keep in mind that if you’re a foreign woman, dressing conservatively is still not going to help you blend in or avoid catcalls and constant hassling.

I always wore long dresses (with a sweater or scarf to cover my chest and shoulders) or flowy pants and a long-sleeved top in Egypt and felt comfortable.

6. Poverty Is Very Visible In Egypt

Poverty is extremely visible in many parts of Egypt, and this is something you should be prepared for before you go.

It doesn’t mean that Egypt is unsafe, but it’s something that can really catch you off guard if you’ve only seen Instagram-worthy photos of the country online.

One particularly heartbreaking thing that’s common to see in Egypt is child beggars.

As awful of a situation as it is, it’s best not to give money to them because it perpetuates the cycle of exploitation — the children don’t get to keep this money, and adults are often forcing them to beg.

7. Food Hygiene Is Questionable

As I’ve mentioned several times, Egypt is not necessarily an unsafe place — it can just be uncomfortable. Aside from the constant hassling and scams, I would say one of the biggest issues you might face is getting sick.

Food hygiene standards in Egypt are not the same as they are in the U.S. or Europe, which can lead to many travelers getting sick.

This is definitely a destination where you’ll want to travel with plenty of Pepto-Bismol and Imodium, and be choosy about where you eat.

You also cannot drink the tap water in Egypt. I recommend getting a LifeStraw filtering water bottle. It’s cheaper than buying bottled water all the time and better for the environment.

I literally never travel without mine and I’ve used it to safely drink the tap water in so many countries around the world.

8. There’s Not Much Of A Solo Travel Scene

One thing I found interesting about Egypt is that there’s not much of a solo travel or backpacker scene.

I think part of the reason I’ve found it so easy to travel solo throughout almost all of Central and South America is because of how common it is to stay in hostels, meet other solo travelers, book backpacker activities, and so on.

This is just not as much of a “thing” in Egypt. So if you don’t travel Egypt solo, you aren’t missing out on much, which leads me to my final tip…

9. Traveling Solo Is Not Necessarily Cheaper

You won’t save a ton of money traveling independently in Egypt versus booking a group tour.

There are plenty of affordable group tours in Egypt (check out companies like G Adventures or Intrepid Travel) that work out to cost only slightly more than if you were to try and book your own accommodations, transportation, and activities.

I’m not usually one for group tours, but in Egypt I 100% think it’s the best option.

It also takes away all of the stress of navigating what can be a challenging destination so you can actually enjoy Egypt.

There’s something about London.

The world’s third most visited city will always have a special place in the hearts of American travelers – it’s an iconic, historic, and captivating place that can offer you something completely different with each visit.

From the major sights like Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, down to trendy districts such as Shoreditch, London’s popularity never seems to wane, with this spring looking no different.

Here are a few reasons why the capital of the United Kingdom remains an essential travel destination for Americans in 2024:

Accessible And Welcoming

One of the main attractions of London is that it is a super friendly and welcoming place for American travelers.

Okay, so we might have different words for certain things, and each has our own quirks and eccentricities (get used to being offered tea multiple times per day), but deep down, we are very similar, which makes traveling around the city easy.

While not a cheap city, it has become a little cheaper for Americans in recent years thanks to the decline in the value of the British Pound – it’s worth about $1.26 at the time of writing.

To make it more affordable, consider grabbing a London Pass – a special pass that gets you into multiple attractions for your chosen number of days for a set fee.

London is also an LGBTQ+-friendly destination, which you can celebrate at the BFI Flare festival from March 13-24 or at its annual Pride celebrations on June 29.

Always Something New Happening

London is a fast-paced city; there’s always a hip new place to hang out, get great food, or spend an evening in impressive surroundings.

A great example is the iconic Battersea Power Station, which is now home to an observation tower and the Arcade food hall and bar.

New shows will be opening in London’s many famous theatres in 2024 including MJ The Musical (about Michael Jackson) in Soho and the Player Kings starring Ian McKellen in Wimbledon.

Flight Choice Is Excellent

London’s major airport, Heathrow, is extremely well connected with the United States.

In fact, in a recent report, the airport revealed that its most popular flight route is to and from New York (more than 3 million passengers), with Los Angeles, Chicago, and San Francisco also making the top 20.

And that’s just one airport – you can also fly non-stop to London into London Gatwick Airport from a wide range of American cities, including Boston, Miami, Las Vegas, Washington D.C., and Tampa.

One bit of advice when you arrive at Heathrow Airport is to give the Heathrow Express train a miss – it’s a quick way to get to central London, but it will set you back around $30 per adult, one way.

If you’re able, grab the London Underground and use the Piccadilly Line to Piccadilly Circus or Leicester Square, and you’re right in the mix. You can also use the relatively new Elizabeth Line to get into the city.

Iconic Events

Spring and summer are probably the two best months to visit London, especially due to the huge array of world-class events that take place in the city catering to all tastes.

For the green-fingered among us, there is the Chelsea Flower Show from May 21-25, while sports fans won’t want to miss quintessential events like the London Marathon (April 21) and Wimbledon (July 1-14).

And if the party vibe is what you seek, then delay your trip until August when the annual Notting Hill Carnival takes place (25-26).

A Truly International City

London can take you to almost any corner of the world in one day, which is just another reason why it’s so popular.

With every new neighborhood you explore, you can be transported to a different place and experience the flavors and cultures of different communities.
