The world is an adventure playground for solo travelers, and no destination has caught their attention more than Europe.

Europe tops the charts for being home to the safest, most interesting, and culture-rich solo travel spots.

But which city is the best of them all? A new report has found this city is affordable, has a low crime rate, and offers exceptional solo traveler experiences.

Here’s why this historic city was voted the best in the world for solo travelers:

A Safe City

Prague is highly sought after by solo travelers because it is known to be one of the safest cities in Europe.

Though there is crime in Prague, this tends to be petty theft and street crimes, with the violent crime rate in the city very low.

The U.S. Department of State has given the Czech Republic a Level 1 advisory rating, which is the lowest rating available. This means that U.S. citizens should exercise normal precautions in the country and that it is a very safe country.

Like all travelers, solo travelers should take extra care with their belongings in crowded places and especially on public transport. But otherwise, you will feel very safe, even after dark, as a solo traveler in Prague.

Best For Budget Travelers

Prague has long been known for being one of the most affordable destinations in Europe, and although prices have increased in recent years, that is still true today.

Everything you need as a traveler can be found for a reasonable price in the city.

Research has found that it costs around $45-$65 per day to visit Prague as a budget traveler.

Around $5 will buy you a hearty and delicious traditional lunch in a local restaurant. And as of January the price of a pint of beer was around $3 on average.

In most cases, it is cheaper to order a beer in a restaurant than it is to order a bottle of water. So if you needed an excuse for a lunchtime pint here it is!

Prague is more expensive than other Czech cities but it is still one of the most affordable European capitals you can visit.

So Much To See And Do

It doesn’t matter how long or short your trip to Prague, you’ll never run out of things to see and do. Prague is one of the oldest cities in Europe and it has the architectural diversity to prove it.

One of Prague’s biggest tourist sights is Prague Castle and it is well worth exploring. Other historical sights you shouldn’t miss on your solo explorations include the Charles Bridge, the Old Town Astronomical Clock and the Old-New Synagogue.

New Survey Reveals The Worst 3 Airlines In Europe According To Travelers

Europe may be the global capital for railway travel, with new exciting cross-border journeys launching this year, including a Sleeper Train visiting 7 of its most beautiful cities, but flying remains by far and large the easiest and cheapest way to explore the culturally-charged continent.

Even the most environmentally-conscious of travelers will throw caution to the wind when tempted with ten-dollar flights to Spain or a last-minute sunny getaway offer to Cyprus that costs less commuting within a single country, but flying in Europe does not come without its challenges.

While it’s true you can save a substantial amount of money traveling low-cost, you’ll have to master the art of carry-on packing, observe strict luggage policies, and you might have to allow for some flexibility in your travel plans (you know, just in case there’s some delay involved).

In case you’ve been wondering, and if you’re the kind who likes to make better-informed decisions when it comes to booking flights, a new Which? survey has revealed the top 3 worst airlines for short-haul flights in Europe (and it includes the leading budget carrier):

Iberia

With an approval score of 49%, Spain’s Iberia is not only the third worst airline for flights within Europe but the worst-ranking full-service carrier based on the Which? survey. That’s not to say it’s bad, as around 87% of flights will arrive on time.

Still, on-time performance is not the only metric to factor in, with the lack of complimentary food and personalized service on short-haul routes, which comprise the bulk of Iberia’s flight map, likely to be perceived negatively by customers.

This wouldn’t be a problem with Ryanair, Vueling, or easyJet, as resorting to aggressive fare wars while maintaining operational costs as low as possible seems to be their business model. Iberia, on the other hand, has higher ticket prices compared to budget carriers.

Flying from London to Madrid, tickets start from $86 one-way, no luggage added, compared to only $25 on Ryanair. At those rates, you’d expect Iberia to offer more comfort, or even provide free snacks onboard, and that is almost never the case short-haul.

Ryanair

Speaking of Ryanair, the Irish giant is the single-largest budget carrier in Europe, reaching 227 international destinations. Its short-haul flights serve not only European but also North African, Middle Eastern, and Western Asian hubs, with Morocco, Türkiye, Egypt, and Armenia, to name a few.

When it comes to customer service, you get what you pay for: you can’t expect pampering, well-cushioned seats, free nibbles, or even reclination, for that matter, on a $20 flight from Paris-Beauvais to Gdansk, one of the prettiest cities in Poland, or Malaga, in Spain’s warm Costa Del Sol.

At an approval rate of 47%, complaints include stiff seats and (at times) disdainful staff. Compared to the United States, it’s almost impossible to sack contract employees based on their performance and/or treatment of customers unless it’s something major due to Europe’s robust labor rights.

Don’t expect Ryanair flight attendants to go out of their way to be accommodating of your needs, nor the airline itself to show understanding, or issue refunds if you can’t make your flight due to personal reasons. On the bright side, their punctuality is not suboptimal, with most departures happening on time.

Wizz Air

The title of the worst airline in Europe currently goes to Hungary-based Wizz Air, with a customer score of only 44%. Issues are similar to those of Ryanair, as it scores low for seat comfort, food and drinks, and it’s essentially a Business and First Class customer’s worst nightmare.

It will get you where you need to be, and there’s no denying cheap last-minute tickets starting from as low as $34 are hard to come by in other airlines, but you definitely shouldn’t expect the typically indifferent staff to adhere to the highest standards of customer service.

Once again, this is not America, where it’s all smiles and pleasantries. That being said, Wizz Air flights departed on time for the most part throughout 2023, with only 2% being delayed by over three hours, higher than most of its competitors, yet not alarmingly high.

The company has fought back against the classification, declaring the survey methodology as ‘misleading’ and stating the results are ‘not representative’, pointing out that only 1.15% of respondents said they flew with Wizz Air during that period.

Bottomline

Wizz Air, Ryanair, and Iberia are three of the most popular airlines in Europe, and though the customer experience is not stellar, based on the Which? survey, it’s relatively satisfactory. Once again, you shouldn’t expect outstanding service paying the equivalent to a meal on flight tickets.

Being low-cost carriers, they will of course attract both fierce defenders and staunch detractors, and the latter is particularly true for those who have had a particularly bad experience flying low-cost in Europe, be it as a result of mishandled luggage, flight delays, or unhelpful staff.

This does not mean you should expect the worst yourself or that your own customer journey will be fully reflective of the results of this survey, which, as Wizz Air officials remarked, may have had its results affected by the underrepresentation of certain targeted audiences.

If anything does happen, you’ll notice ‘Kobans’ dotted throughout neighborhoods – which are essentially ‘Police boxes’ used for contacting the local authorities as quickly as possible.

For us solo female travelers who aren’t quite as comfortable sharing accommodations with males, Tokyo has introduced the concept of ‘female-only hostels’ – which offer some peace of mind for many ladies out there.

These capsule hostels are clean, safe, affordable, and allow women to remain comfortable during their travels. They range between $20-40, which may seem pricier for a hostel, but if safety and being comfortable are priorities, then this is the option for you.

Of course, you’re bound to find a variety of unique experiences to try in Japan – it’s another country, after all, BUT what about unique experiences for solo travelers specifically?

Besides wandering the food markets on your own (which is an experience in and of itself) or cherry blossom hunting, there’s so many options. According to Flashpack, the top choices for solo travelers include having lunch with a sumo wrestler and meditating with monks in Kyoto.. Can you imagine?!

With so much going and meeting new people, wanting a little relaxation is perfectly normal. A classic solo experience involves unwinding in one of Japan’s many Hot Pools. Cultural, calming, and a good way to enjoy alone time or meet fellow travelers, these pools can be found around the country (the most visited being Kurokawa Onsen).

While there’s really no bad time to take that European vacation you’ve been dreaming about, spring might just be the best season to actually book the tickets.

The poll set out to discover the top European destinations that international travelers deemed to be “the best,” and below, you’ll find the places that made it to the top 3 out of 500+ options.

3. Malta

Malta has been making news these past few months thanks to its record-breaking tourism success, dreamy Mediterranean weather, and surprisingly easy-to-obtain digital nomad visa.

This time, though, the small but mighty country has come to the center of international attention thanks to the impeccable impression it has left on the people lucky enough to explore its wonders.

Don’t let the island’s small size fool you, I once spent a week trying to see and do as much as possible in Malta, and I still missed out on many of the places I’d put in my must-visit list.

Luckily, though, I still got to explore two of the country’s most gorgeous hotspots: Valletta, the capital, and Mellieħa, a large village just off the northern coast of the main island that’s famously home to one of the most beautiful beaches in all of Europe, Għadira Bay.

One of the biggest mistakes travelers make when choosing their next European destination is overlooking Monaco as yet another overpriced, overcrowded destination when, in reality, that couldn’t be further from the truth.

After Visiting 50 Countries These Are My Top 7 Tips For Solo Female Travelers

When I first started traveling solo, I’m sure many people thought I was crazy.

But over 50 countries later, I don’t plan on stopping any time soon. I’ve traveled solo to almost every country in Latin America, and most of Europe too.

After years of traveling alone and having a safe and fun time everywhere I’ve gone, these are my top tips for other solo female travelers.

1. Start Off Small

If you’ve never taken a solo trip before, start off small.

My first true solo trip was a weekend in Copenhagen (ranked as one of the safest cities in the world for solo female travelers) while I was studying abroad in college.

An “easy” destination like this is a great way to test the waters of solo female travel.

Destinations like the UK, Ireland, and Scandinavia are perfect for first-time solo female travelers because they’re extremely safe, easy to travel in, and almost everyone speaks English.

2. Always Pack Light

Packing light is key! I’ve spent months at a time living out of a carry-on suitcase on my long-term travels. You can also get a backpack (ideally 50 liters or smaller) if that’s more your style.

Regardless, packing light makes things so much easier and less stressful as a solo traveler.

You don’t have to worry about lugging a giant suitcase through new and unfamiliar destinations on your own, and it also makes you less conspicuous and helps you blend in more.

3. Stay In Hostels

If you’re worried about getting lonely when traveling on your own, stay in hostels!

Hostels aren’t just for backpackers in their early twenties anymore either. You’ll find travelers of all ages staying at hostels, and there are many nice hostels that feel more like a boutique hotel.

If staying in a shared dorm room with other travelers isn’t for you, you can pay a bit more and stay in a private room (this is what I do!) You can still enjoy the social benefits of the hostel, and it’s a great way to make friends while traveling alone, especially with other solo travelers.

4. Join Group Activities

Another one of my favorite ways to make friends while traveling solo is by joining group activities.

Walking tours, cooking classes, group hikes, day tours, fitness classes, and bar crawls are just some examples of group activities you can join while traveling where you have a high chance of meeting other people.

If you’re nervous about traveling solo to a particular destination, you can even join an extended group tour instead of traveling completely on your own. This is a guaranteed way to meet other travelers, and you don’t have to worry about logistics yourself.

5. Do Your Own Research

Now let’s get into some safety tips for solo female travelers.

When planning a solo trip, you might hear from concerned, well-meaning family and friends that what you’re doing isn’t safe. In these cases, it’s important to do your own research and consider the source.

Do your family and friends have first-hand experience traveling solo in the destination you’re going to? Probably not. But can you find examples of women who actually have traveled solo there? Definitely!

The Internet offers a wealth of information for aspiring solo travelers. I’ve used solo female travel blogs to help me research and plan trips for years.

I also do extensive online research and planning before a trip, because the more prepared I am, the safer I feel arriving in a new and unfamiliar destination.

6. Trust Your Instincts

I’ll skip the most obvious safety advice like watching what you drink and avoiding walking alone at night.

But one of the biggest safety tips I can give you is to trust your instincts.

They’re rarely wrong. If something feels off about a place, situation, or person, remove yourself immediately, and don’t worry about being rude (see tip #7 below.)

I’ve been lucky enough not to have any major mishaps while traveling solo, but I have been in a few weird or sketchy situations. And when those alarm bells started going off, I listened and got out of there!

7. Unleash Your Inner New Yorker

As a New Yorker, I’m used to all the stereotypes about us. We’re rude, we’re always in a hurry, we’re blunt, and so on.

But you know what? There’s a little bit of truth to all of that, and letting your inner New Yorker out can actually help you as a solo female traveler.

If someone is hassling you, aggressively trying to sell you something, or otherwise making you feel uncomfortable, don’t be afraid to simply ignore them and keep walking.

Always walk with a purpose and stay alert. Looking lost or confused makes you a target for pickpockets and scammers. If you are lost, wait until you can duck in somewhere more private (like a store or a hotel lobby) to regroup and get your bearings.

A little bit of street smarts goes a long way in keeping you safe when traveling solo!

These Are The Top 10 Most Visited Countries By American Travelers According To New Report

While exploring new places is always exciting, there’s usually a reason why certain countries remain popular with American travelers.

Whether it’s down to the ease of travel, the language, the sights, or the culture, there will always be some favorites that stand out.

The latest favorites of American travelers have been revealed by the experts at Visited Travel App as part of their annual travel report.

They produced a list of the top 10 countries that were most visited by Americans in 2023, according to data from their users.

While the results may not be totally surprising, they are definitely inspiring. Time to start planning some 2024 travel!

Mexico

No surprises here – Mexico has been the premier travel destination for Americans for a long time now.

The beach destinations are unrivaled in Mexico – whether you want to sun yourself on the Riviera Maya, catch waves on the Pacific Coast in Oaxaca State, or sample a slower pace of life Mazatlán.

Then there are the cities – with Mexico City leading the charge as one of those places you simply must visit once in your life, especially as a solo traveler.

There’s always chatter about safety in Mexico, and naturally there are some places you should avoid, but with usual travel precautions many of the popular locations across the country are safe to visit.

There are plenty of reasons to visit in 2024, not least because the Tren Maya is now operational, making traveling around the super-popular Yucatan Peninsula easier and cheaper – allowing us to see some lesser-known hidden gems.

Canada

With captivating cities like Toronto and Vancouver and some of the most stunning scenery on the planet in between, it’s easy to see why Canada attracts travelers in droves.

While there are plenty of flights available to the neighbor in the north, another great benefit for those that live in the north of the United States is that you can easily drive across the border – giving you the benefit of having your own car when exploring the vast wilderness.

One other great reason to consider visiting Canada next year is that its tourism visitor numbers have not fully recovered yet after the pandemic, meaning the most popular places will still be a bit less crowded than usual.

France

A serial winner of the world’s top tourism destination title, France has an endearing appeal that American travelers just can’t seem to get enough of.

Paris alone is a good enough reason to visit this European country thanks to its beautiful architecture, unrivaled art scene, and oh-so-chic café culture.

Despite that, you may want to avoid visiting in the summer this year as prices will be inflated due to the city hosting the Olympic Games.

Away from Paris, France has many other destinations worth your time and effort – from the lush Loire Valley littered with beautiful chateaux to the sparkling seas and luxury hideaways along the iconic Cote d’Azur.

And with new flights to France being added all the time, there really is no excuse for you not to go and see what all the fuss is about.

United Kingdom

A weekend in London is pretty hard to beat.

This super diverse and constantly changing city is not only home to some of the world’s most famous landmarks but also a place where you can find trendy neighborhoods off the beaten path.

You could spend a few days in London and never go to the same places twice, with more still left to explore. It’s no wonder that Americans love visiting it so much.

But there’s much more to the U.K. than just London, though – the country is full of diverse cities and gorgeous countryside that is all easy to access due to its relatively small size.

Italy

Italy is another country that American travelers will always be fascinated with.

Its varied destinations such as Rome, the Amalfi Coast, and Venice are always great places to explore, even in the winter.

Italy benefits from a very efficient and affordable train network – it’s one of the best ways to get around and see as much of this diverse and historic place as possible.

However, my personal recommendation to check out in Italy is the Mediterranean island of Sardinia.

This gem has some of the best beaches in the country, as well as pretty and historic towns, impressive canyons and valleys, and culture that is unique and separate from the mainstream of Italy.

In 2023 more Americans traveled internationally than ever before, and Europe has emerged as the most popular outbound destination for U.S. citizens.

A whopping 15.8 million American travelers visited Europe in 2023. That’s 55% of all international journeys.

But where are all these travelers going?

A new report from Visa Guide World has found that these are the top 5 most visited European destinations by American travelers:

5. Reykjavik, Iceland

Reykjavik is by far the coldest country to appear on this list but it also boasts the most incredible natural beauty.

It is the largest city in Iceland and the country’s capital, but it is still the smallest city on this list.

During the winter months Reykjavik is a frozen wonderland thanks to its location in the arctic circle but the weather is much milder in the summer when the destination becomes beautifully verdant green.

No matter what time of year you visit you shouldn’t miss the opportunity to visit the National and Saga museums where you can explore Iceland’s Viking history.

Other not-to-be-missed attractions include the chance to swim in the geothermal Blue Lagoon spa.

Reykjavik is an incredible city for nature lovers and if you visit during the winter months between September and April then you’ll stand a good chance of seeing the breathtakingly beautiful Northern Lights.

4. Rome, Italy

Italy is a hugely popular country with travelers from the U.S., and Rome is considered the country’s cultural heart.

Incredible architecture, museums and galleries, delicious food, and the warm Mediterranean climate are all part of the eternal appeal of the eternal city.

Rome is the third most visited city in Europe thanks largely to its rich history, monuments, and archaeological sites. Some of Romes’s not-to-be-missed attractions include the Colosseum, the Pantheon, the Roman Forum, and the Trevi Fountain.

Although officially a city in its own right, Vatican City is also in Rome, and travelers shouldn’t miss the opportunity to explore its unique and ornate attractions. The Vatican museums are fascinating and you can also see the Sistine Chapel here.

Rome is a modern city with an ancient heart. Spend your days exploring the city’s rich history and your nights eating delicious Italian food and partying with the locals.

3. Dublin, Ireland

Dublin is the 3^rd most visited European destination for U.S. travelers. Many Americans choose to visit Dublin because they want to explore their own Irish heritage and others are just looking for a good time!

Some of the main attractions for American travelers in Dublin include The Irish Emigration Museum, the Book of Kells exhibition at Trinity College and the National Museum of Ireland. Dublin is a city with a rich history and these are the best places to explore it.

If you want to learn more about Ireland’s most famous beer, then you can visit the Guinness Storehouse, which was ranked Ireland’s number 1 visitor attraction. And on the subject of beer, Dublin is a great place for a pint or two.

The people of Dublin are known to be warm and welcoming, and the city also has a rich arts and cultural scene that would be easy to incorporate into your trip.

2. Paris, France

Paris is the city of lights and the city of love. Paris has been heavily romanticized in American culture. Because of this it is a bucket list dream for many American travelers to visit the Eiffel Tower and to see the Mona Lisa in the Louvre.

More Americans visit Paris than any other nationality, and if you’ve never visited the city before, then you should see the Eiffel Tower and tick that off your list.

But Paris is a city with so much more to offer than these hugely popular attractions.

Other sites you shouldn’t miss during your Parisian adventure include riding the funicular in Montmartre to the Sacre Couer Basilica, visiting the famous dead in Père Lachaise Cemetery, or watching the dancers at the famous Moulin Rouge.

For something a little different, visit the sprawling Saint-Ouen flea market on the weekends and bag a bargain that you won’t find anywhere else in the world.

1. London, England

London has emerged as the most popular destination in Europe for American travelers. The lack of language barrier makes London an easy place for U.S. travelers to visit, and the city’s rich history is a huge attraction.

Those with an interest in the British Royal Family can explore Buckenham Palace and watch the changing of the guard, stop to say hello to the ravens in the Tower of London (which is where the crown jewels are held), and have a scare in the London Dungeons.

London has an incredible restaurant scene for foodies, the West End is a cultural Mecca thanks to its huge number of shows and events, and with a pub on every corner London’s nightlife is exceptional too.

The most popular month to visit London in 2023 was April. The weather in April is perfect for sightseeing and this is when the city really starts to come alive after a long cold winter.

April is also a great time to visit the city’s many parks and gardens, such as Hyde Park and Kew Gardens, when the spring flowers are in full bloom.

One of the great things about being a frequent traveler is getting to see some of the world’s best attractions first-hand.

Ancient Roman baths in Britain, the mythical temple of Angkor Wat in Cambodia, and St Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican – these international sights attract American visitors in their droves.

But what about the best attractions on our own doorstep in North America? Which are the ones worth your time and effort to see?

A new report by vacation rental company Casago has some answers.

6) Cerro Negro Volcano, Nicaragua

Situated about 15 miles from the city of Leon, Nicaragua’s Cerro Negro Volcano is a sight to behold.

Standing at 2,388ft, this imperious volcano stands out against the horizon thanks to its jet-black slopes made from the ash and volcanic rock of previous eruptions.

Not only is this a great attraction for lovers of great scenery and amateur volcanologists, it’s also ideal for thrill-seekers – you can hire sleds and sandboards to whizz down the sandy slopes.

Need another reason to visit? Nicaragua is by far one of the cheapest countries in the region, with average spending for travelers estimated at about $55 per day.

5) Central Park, New York

The 840-acre strip of green that punctuates Manhattan is quite possibly the most famous park on the planet.

I am, of course, referring to Central Park in New York City, the only attraction in the United States to make this top 6.

As well as being a great spot for walking, running, or grabbing a relaxing picnic, Central Park is home to a world-famous zoo, a carousel, and a boathouse where you can rent boats to traverse the lake.

One of the best things about Central Park is the views it affords you of some of New York’s most iconic buildings.

4) Museo Nacional de Antropologia, Mexico

Located just over a mile west of the Angel of Independence statue in ever-popular Mexico City, the Museo Nacional de Antropologia is the national museum of Mexico and well worth adding to your itinerary when visiting.

Over more than 800,000 square feet of exhibition space, the museum showcases some of the most interesting cultural and archeological artifacts in all of Mexico.

The entry fee is 95 Mexican Pesos (about $5), and right now, the museum is showcasing limited-time exhibitions on the themes of apocalypse and Chac Mool by Sebastian.

3) Old Quebec, Canada

This UNESCO World Heritage site is a remarkably well-preserved fortified town featuring intricate colonial architecture that dates back over 400 years.

They call this region of the city ‘the birthplace of French North America’, and it’s easy to see why when you sample some of the delightful cafes, bakeries, and independent shops on Petit-Champlain Street.

Old Quebec is close to a picturesque port, which is a beautiful spot to watch either sunrise or sunset paint golden light over the beautiful buildings behind.

This unique attraction must surely play a part in why Canada is always one of the most visited destinations for Americans.

2) Horseshoe Falls, Canada

For those who aren’t familiar, Horseshoe Falls is one of the main waterfalls that make up Niagara Falls.

Horseshoe is on the Canadian side of this iconic destination and attracts more than 8 million visitors annually.

It might seem like a cliched and maybe even overrated destination, but it scored the second-highest average score in this study among American travelers.

Despite the slightly gaudy nature of the nearby town, the falls themselves are something everyone should see at least once.

1) Tikal, Guatemala

It may surprise you to learn that the top-rated attraction in North America by American travelers lies in the underrated nation of Guatemala.

But once you lay eyes on the magnificent temples and ruins of Tikal National Park in the far northeast of the country, you may begin to understand.

The temples here jut up above dense rainforest and offer perhaps some of the best examples to witness what ancient Maya culture was like.

It’s also relatively easy to access – there’s a small airport in the city of Flores on the shores of Lake Peten Itza that is only about an hour’s drive from Tikal.
