Is Tulum, Mexico a safe destination for travelers in 2024? Here’s everything you need to know about safety in the popular beach town.

You’ve probably seen photos of Tulum all over Instagram already. The fancy beach clubs, the trendy cafes, the gorgeous white-sand beaches lined with palm trees, and the jungle-chic hotels.

Tulum has been a major hotspot for years now, and it’s only expected to grow in popularity in 2024 with the opening of a new international airport and the Maya Train opening in February.

However, despite all the flash and glamour, there have also been safety concerns in Tulum. Here’s what you need to know about safety, from someone who has actually been to Tulum as a solo traveler.

Tulum Travel Advisory

Tulum is part of the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, which currently has a Level 2 Travel Advisory from the U.S. Department of State.

This means travelers should “exercise increased caution” while traveling due to a higher level of crime. In Tulum, the increase in crime can mainly be attributed to organized crime and drug-related crime. However, some of it is also petty crime directly affecting tourists.

Don’t Be Too Flashy

One of the easiest things you can do to avoid getting robbed in Tulum is to avoid being super flashy.

Tulum tends to attract some “show off” travelers thanks to its high-end resorts and pricy restaurants and clubs, but it’s important to remember that you aren’t in St. Barts or Monaco.

Tourists have been warned to avoid wearing expensive items in Tulum, so maybe leave the Rolexes and $2,000 designer handbags at home if that applies to you.

Don’t Keep Your Phone Out

Phones are one of the most common things to get stolen by opportunistic thieves.

You can make it harder for them by not leaving your phone out, just waiting to get snatched.

Don’t leave your phone sitting out on the table while you’re at a restaurant or on your towel at the beach. It’s a really simple thing, but you’d be shocked by how many people don’t do it.

Always Stay Alert

Pay attention to your surroundings and stay alert while in Tulum. This includes maintaining an awareness of your belongings (phone, wallet, keys, etc.) and the people around you.

Tulum is not a destination where you have to be super “on guard” or edgy about your surroundings at all times, but it’s still a smart idea to stay alert and aware to avoid issues.

Don’t Walk Around Alone At Night

Honestly, as a solo female traveler who has traveled alone to almost every single country in Latin America, I felt very safe walking around Tulum, even after dark.

That being said, it’s a good idea to avoid walking around alone late at night. This goes for everyone, male and female travelers, and it’s good advice to follow anywhere in the world.

Only Use Bank ATMs

Some ATMs in Tulum are located out on the street and not affiliated with a bank. Avoid using these to take out money because they’re a bigger target for card skimmers and thieves.

Instead, find a bank ATM to withdraw money from. Some of these are located inside the bank and others are still located outside, but they are overall safer and more secure to use.

Know Some Spanish

This is not nearly as important as it is in other Latin American destinations because Tulum is extremely touristy and Americanized, so most people can speak English, but nonetheless, it’s a good idea to know some Spanish before traveling to Tulum.

While not strictly necessary in Tulum, speaking Spanish can help you understand more and have a more comfortable travel experience, and it makes you less of a target.

Planning a trip to Venice, Italy in 2024? These are the most important things travelers need to know before visiting Venice this year!

Venice is one of the most iconic cities in Europe. It’s a bucket list destination for many travelers who dream of seeing the city’s many canals and bridges — of which there are 150 and 435, respectively.

In addition to being one of the most beautiful and romantic cities in Europe, Venice is unfortunately also one of the most overcrowded. The city has been suffering from overtourism for years, and several measures are finally going into place in 2024 to combat this.

Here are the most important things travelers should know before visiting Venice this year:

Venice Is Finally Implementing A Day Tripper Fee

Although it was announced several years ago, Venice’s so-called “day tripper tax” has never actually been implemented — until now, that is.

Beginning in April, the city of Venice will implement a €5 fee ($5.45) on 29 select dates from April through July. This fee will be charged to visitors who are only in the city for a day, such as cruise tourists and day trippers. It will apply on most weekends and other peak travel dates.

Visitors will have to pre-book a ticket online and show a QR code at certain entry points around the city. The goal of this effort is to limit overcrowding, although it’s still on a trial basis.

Tour Groups Of Over 25 People Have Been Banned

Another recent update tourists should be aware of is the ban on tour groups of over 25 people in Venice. This new rule will go into effect in June.

It’s designed to alleviate large crowds, which may cause blockages and human “traffic jams” on the pedestrian-only streets of Venice.

Additionally, the use of loudspeakers will be banned in Venice. Many tour guides use loudspeakers while walking through the streets of Venice, but it causes a major noise disturbance.

These are just some of the latest changes, much like banning large cruise ships from entering the center of Venice, that are designed to protect the city from the effects of overtourism.

Off Season Is The Best Time To Travel

Based on all the drawbacks of traveling to Venice, such as massive crowds and sky-high prices, you might think you’re better off not visiting Venice at all in 2024.

However, my recommendation is actually to travel during the off-season.

Three of my four trips to Venice have been during the off season, including my latest visit in November 2023. And this is by far the best time to experience Venice as it should be experienced! From October through March, you can enjoy low crowds and lower prices in Venice.

Although it can be a bit chilly at this time of year, it’s much better than visiting Venice during the summertime when sweltering heat combined with crowds makes walking around nearly unbearable.

The only thing to watch out for when visiting Venice during the off season is the acqua alta — high tide that occasionally occurs during the winter and causes the lowest points of the city to become flooded.

During the acqua alta, the city installs temporary raised walkways over flooded areas, and you can purchase knee-high plastic shoe coverings to stay dry.

But Be Careful Of Visiting Venice In February

The only exception to the low crowds and low prices of Venice in the off season? Carnivale during February! Although experiencing Carnivale is a bucket list experience for many travelers, it’s not for the faint of heart. The city becomes absolutely packed and prices for hotels are exorbitant.

This year, the festival will take place from February 3 to February 13, although there will be some pre-Carnivale festivities happening the week before too.

If you want to save money and avoid crowds, this is NOT the time to visit Venice. But if you want to experience a festival unlike any other in the world, visit Venice during Carnivale!

Why Solo Travelers Love This Lesser Known Coastal City In Southeast Asia

It’s no secret solo travelers have been flocking back into Southeast Asia now that the region has fully lifted all of its border curbs.

The world capital of backpacking tourism, the subcontinent is famous for its tropical atmosphere, vibrant culture, warm and welcoming people, and affordability, with tourist dollars stretching a lot further here than they would in the Western World.

Interestingly, it’s a lesser-known coastal port that seems to be stealing the limelight lately, drawing in a growing number of young adventurers:

Da Nang Is Southeast Asia’s Unsung Tropical Getaway

Da Nang is a large city straddling the central coast of Vietnam.

Though it has never been as widely popular as Nha Trang, the bustling resort destination further up the coast, nor the country’s two largest metropolises, Ho Chi Minh City (alternatively called Saigon) and Hanoi, it’s been gaining traction lately among budget travelers.

It’s really no secret Vietnam is a world-class budget destination where you can survive on as little as a hundred dollars for a week, but little is said about Da Nang specifically:

Historically, Da Nang traces its origins back to the ancient Kingdom of Champa, established as early as 192 AD along the coastline of modern-day Vietnam.

Essentially a fishing village throughout its early days, Da Nang grew in relevance following Western contact when Europeans set up trading posts on the coast, leading to the region’s rapid development and urbanization.

The Gateway To Central Vietnam

Nowadays, it is a large regional capital with a population of over 1.3 million residents, famous for a landmark ‘Dragon’ Bridge that spans a fast-flowing river, clusters of towering skyscrapers, and its multicultural community.

Da Nang is just as vibrant and exciting a city break as Bangkok, with comparable electric nightlife and a vibrant social scene.

It is bordered by stunning natural reserves, much like Ubud, in Indonesia’s Bali, and it is close to the ocean.

At the same time, Da Nang can be much cheaper and less crowded than these aforementioned places, which are already quite affordable themselves.

Da Nang Is Hugely Affordable

Believe it or not, a single person’s monthly costs in Da Nang are estimated at a mere US$453.30 per month (without rent), as the cost of living in the metropolitan area is fairly low, and consumer prices are hugely affordable.

According to Numbeo, a modest meal at an inexpensive eatery in Da Nang – most likely a kerbside food stall – is a negligible one dollar and sixty-three cents, while a more elaborate, three-course meal for two people at a mid-range restaurant is as cheap as US$22.39.

Numbeo‘s figures need to be taken with a pinch of salt, as their data is not peer-reviewed and relies on contributions from unverified sources, but having been to Vietnam ourselves, including Da Nang, we are able to confirm it is not too far from the truth.

To give you a better overview, BudgetYourTrip‘s average daily cost for a trip to Da Nang is US$47 per person, while the average hotel price is US$39.

These are still affordable in the grand scheme of things, but bear in mind their median numbers may be overestimated, as they are more commonly based on the expenses of vacationers or short-term visitors with money to spend on luxuries, as opposed to natives and the local lifestyle.

More often than not, solo travelers travel on more limited funds and make budget-conscious decisions, especially in Southeast Asia, a backpacking hotspot and multi-country destination.

There are numerous affordable B&B stays and three-star hotels in Da Nang for under US$30 a night, and youth hostels for much cheaper, even though we wouldn’t recommend them unless an AC system is installed, as the heat and humidity can be overwhelming at times.

Da Nang is the perfect destination not only for eating cheap and shopping but also exploring the unspoiled Central-Vietnamese nature.

What To See In And Around Da Nang

It is the gateway to the world-famous Marble Mountains and the majestic Bà Nà peaks, and it is a popular homebase for visiting some of the country’s top cultural attractions.

These are the Golden Hands Bridge, a crossing suspended by two giant hands amidst dense, green foliage, the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hoi An, a yellow-colored historic with an eclectic Old Town, combining elements of both Indochine architecture, and Japanese and French colonial city-building, and Hue, the former Imperial City of Vietnam.

The Hue Citadel is an impressive fortification jam-packed with ancient temples and stately palaces.

Also, not far from Da Nang, precisely 27 miles from the city center, lies the ruined cluster of temples of Mỹ Sơn, yet another UNESCO-protected zone established as early as the 4th century.

If you’re looking for beaches, the best ones within short driving distance of Da Nang (usually half an hour), with satisfactory rates of cleanliness, and with soft, golden sands are My Khe, Phước Mỹ Beach, and Man Thai Beach.

Da Nang Is Remarkably Safe For Foreigners

Finally, yet another reason why solo travelers love Da Nang is its high level of safety.

Much like other major Vietnamese cities, it may not be the cleanest, and traffic can feel hectic at times, but you will soon learn you are under no risk of falling victim to urban violence, and even petty crimes are not a common occurrence.

The Vietnamese are incredibly welcoming people, and other than the odd street vendor, if you ever get approached by a passerby, it will be out of sheer curiosity and with friendly intent.

How To Get To Da Nang

Da Nang International Airport hosts flights from a number of destinations in Asia, including Kuala Lumpur International in Malaysia, Seoul-Incheon in South Korea, Manila in the Philippines, and Singapore, making it easy to travel for backpackers country-hopping around the continent.

Regrettably, no nonstop flights are scheduled between the North American continent and Da Nang.

In order to get there, U.S. citizens must first travel to an intermediate Vietnamese destination or Asian country, usually via Singapore, Seoul, Tokyo in Japan, or Taipei in Taiwan, which are all served by nonstop flights from the States.

Alternatively, travelers can land in either Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam’s two main entry points, and board an overnight train to Da Nang.

In order to enter Vietnam, they will also need a tourist visa, which can be obtained online in advance and lasts for three months.

There are many tempting destinations when it comes to considering a European trip, not least of all in sunny Spain.

Cities like Barcelona, Seville, and Madrid are tempting enough before you even begin to consider beach destinations such as the Costa del Sol, the Balearic Islands, or even the Canary Islands – Spain really does have it all.

And the fact of the matter is that American travelers have simply been loving Spain over the past year.

The latest data from the Spanish Ministry of Tourism shows that more than 3.5 million Americans have visited Spain in 2023, which is over 17% higher than in the last pre-pandemic year 2019.

And the forecast for 2024 shows that this figure could continue to grow – so just why is one of Europe’s cultural gems so popular with American travelers right now?

Universal Appeal

As mentioned above, Spain has a little bit of something for everyone.

Iconic attractions such as the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona or Plaza Mayor in Madrid will always draw in the crowds who love to experience the archetypal European city break.

Then there’s the region of Andalusia in the south of Spain with intriguing cities that show the country’s Moorish history such as Seville, Cordoba, and Malaga.

From Malaga, head east along the coast to find some of Spain’s best resorts, which are perfect for families and couples.

There are even many idyllic island destinations to choose from, such as the Balearic Islands, which recently smashed their tourism record, and the volcanic Canary Islands, which lie off the coast of northwest Africa.

For those who prefer to wander from the beaten path, Spain has some lesser-known destinations such as Galicia that are ideal for discovering different, more rustic sides of the country.

Flights Are Plentiful And Affordable

The choice of flights from the U.S. to Spain has increased alongside the popularity of the country.

Americans can fly nonstop to a wide range of destinations in Spain including the likes of Mallorca.

According to travel booking website Kayak, roundtrip flights from New York to Spain can cost as little as $400, and from Los Angeles, they can cost around $500.

However, the prices of flights vary massively depending on the time of year – be flexible with your dates and you’re bound to find a good deal.

Digital Nomads Are Welcome

The Spanish digital nomad visa has been very popular since it first launched back in May 2023 as part of the country’s StartUp Act.

To be eligible, you must prove you earn double the Spanish minimum wage (about $2,700 per month), must be from outside the European Economic Area, and must not have been a resident in Spain in the last five years.

You can stay for up to a year on the visa and can then apply for an extension after that – you can also bring a spouse or partner, but the amount you must earn goes up by around 25% if you do.

The visa even allows you to work for Spanish companies, provided the money from that makes up no more than 20% of your total income.

Cities such as Seville and Valencia have proven to be very popular hangouts for digital nomads thanks to their great weather, interesting culture, and great transport links.

Spanish Life Is Great

Immersing yourself in the culture of Spain for a few weeks is good for the soul.

Life here is a slower pace than in America, with time taken out to enjoy coffee with friends an essential part of life (as are afternoon siestas).

Evening plans tend to happen much later in Spain than in America too – if you’re heading out for dinner, realistically don’t even think about it until at least 8pm (and even that is a little early for Spain).

People in Spain also know how to throw a party, with a rich calendar of fiestas throughout the year that are often a great way to see some of the traditions in action such as Flamenco dancing and great music.

The next few weeks are notorious for being one of the busiest times of the year when it comes to air travel – and experts at the Transport Security Administration (TSA) are predicting airports to be even busier this year than last.

While TSA Administrator David Pekoske says the TSA is prepared to handle the surge in passengers during the winter holiday season, there are plenty of things we as travelers can do to help everyone’s journey run more smoothly.

In a bid to speed up the airport security experience and reduce traveling stress, the TSA has released a list of 10 steps travelers should follow.

While some points may seem obvious to seasoned travelers, it’s always worth checking in to see what the latest advice is because things can change quickly.

Packing Preparation

Before you get anywhere near the airport, you need to pack.

The TSA recommends beginning your packing with an empty bag so you don’t end up accidentally bringing items you didn’t intend to.

It also pays to check the “What Can I Bring?” section of the TSA website to make sure your bag is all good.

Get To The Airport Earlier Than Usual

This may seem super obvious, but you’d be amazed how you can reduce traveling stress by arriving earlier than you normally would when the airport is busy.

The TSA’s official advice is to arrive 2 hours before your flight, but there’s no harm in getting there a bit before that if you can spare it.

Have Your ID Ready

No one wants to be that person fumbling around in their bag or pockets for their ID when they finally get to the front of the queue.

Make sure you have the correct ID for your journey and have it in your hand when you’re in the screening line, says the TSA.

Advice On Wrapped Gifts

Got that snow globe for your Great Aunty Irma? How about the latest footballer’s autobiography for Dad? Traveling with gifts is super common at this time of year.

Sometimes, those items may need to be inspected, so you can make life easier for yourself by transporting any gifts unwrapped or by having them in gift bags or boxes that can easily be opened to be checked if required.

Firearms Foresight

If you are traveling with a firearm, you must ensure it is unloaded and packed in the correct kind of lockable hard case.

You must also declare the firearm at the ticket counter.

New Screening Technology

How you are screened varies from airport to airport, with new technology being implemented all the time.

The latest technology is Computed Tomography (CT) scanners, which can view your bags in 3D.

The main benefit of CT is that you don’t need to remove liquids or laptops from bags – so be aware of which lane you’re in and what technology is being used.

Time To Consider TSA PreCheck

Imagine waiting for just five minutes or less at the airport checkpoint.

That dream can be a reality if you sign up for TSA PreCheck – a system that allows you a much faster checking experience at the airport and costs just $70 for a five-year duration.

The PreCheck is becoming more popular with travelers and has 15 million members and counting.

If you have a disability or you’re traveling with someone who does, you can call the TSA Cares helpline to help cater for any additional needs.

The number is 855-787-2227, but make sure you call at least 72 hours before your journey.

Antarctica doesn’t even seem real, does it? It’s not like we go to the airport and see it on the flight board as a possible destination.

Travelers should be prepared in advance to give AMEX a call to increase their limits because you may practically be buying a new car.

Most options vary from $10,000 to upwards of $25,000 depending on various factors. Some depart from Chile, while the majority leave from Argentina.

Antarctica Flights

Another way to reach Antarctica is by air. Far more convenient than cruises as you can touch down to King George Island in as little as 2 hours from Punta Arenas, Chile.

Let’s be real, though – there’s no Spirit Airlines for Antarctica. Be prepared to spend a pretty penny no matter your method of transport.

There are also options to fly in and cruise back for those wanting to experience both.

Beyond bragging to your friends you went to one of the most bucket-list-worthy destinations on Earth, the main reason to go is you’ll make lifelong memories for doing so.

There is no place on the planet as untouched as Antarctica. Tourists are only allowed so far in. Those who do touch land will be limited.

According to Jeremy Clubb, the Founder of Antarctica Cruises, many solo travelers are seeking unique experiences in far-out places.

Antarctica checks off those 2 boxes and many more. Those concerned with sustainable travel will be enthralled to be in one of the top places to become more educated about our planet.

Others may have been inspired by documentaries to splurge on this once-in-a-lifetime getaway. There is definitely a luxury factor taking play too, as the latest cruise vessels have been updated to tackle glaciers and freezing conditions while you sit in comfort.

But most importantly, the natural sights you see here you may never witness again like this. Seeing penguins, whales, and seals here isn’t the same as the zoo, a whale tour, or a packed beach.

Lake Titicaca is not only fun to say, but even more fun to visit. After spending time wandering the vast city of La Paz, making your way to Lake Titicaca is a must.

Those who have checked Bolivia off their travel wishlist have raved about Isla del Sol, in particular, describing it as “breathtaking” and recommending tours to ancient ruins.

Wizz collated data from reviews by solo travelers on TripAdvisor to come up with a list of the top five destinations in Europe that are most loved.

Containing a great mix of popular cities and one or two surprises, this list could make a great solo travel itinerary for spring or summer 2024.

Rhodes, Greece

Rhodes will always be a favorite among travelers who head to Greece, and for solo travelers, it’s no different.

Despite suffering some devastating fires this summer, Rhodes has maintained its position as a top-rated destination in Europe.

Rhodes is a relatively safe place with good healthcare and public services – and it’s reasonable when it comes to cost.

Lonely Planet estimates that hostel rooms can be as cheap as $35 a night, while dinner for two in a local restaurant can be as cheap as about $50.

Split, Croatia

Croatia was recently ranked as the best country in the world for solo female travelers, and Split is certainly one of its most popular destinations.

This coastal treasure has just the right mix of beautiful beaches and fascinating history and culture – perfect for exploring at your own pace, which is one of the great pleasures of traveling solo.

Croatia is widely regarded as one of the world’s safest countries, ranking number 14 on the most recent Global Peace Index.

Faro, Portugal

A beautiful riverside city that is defined by its artistic importance and as being one of the main epicenters of the renaissance, Florence is a place that will move you.

The headline acts of this incredible Italian show are no doubt the Cathedral and its ‘Duomo’, the famous David statue by Michelangelo, as well as the unrivaled Uffizi Museum and the Ponte Vecchio bridge.

But what makes it great for solo travelers is the quaint independent cafes and bars, the excellent nightlife, and the uniquely beautiful apartments you can stay in right at the heart of the city.
