5 Reasons Why This Trending U.S. City Is Perfect For Solo Travelers

Washington, D.C. might not be the first place you think of when it comes to amazing travel destinations in the U.S., but you shouldn’t overlook the nation’s capital for a great solo trip.

D.C. has been exploding in popularity as a tourist destination lately, with a record number of visitor arrivals in 2023.

There are tons of amazing things to do in the city, and it’s a surprisingly excellent destination for solo travelers too.

I’ve spent a lot of time exploring D.C. on my own, and these are the top reasons I think it’s the perfect place to go as a solo traveler:

Lots Of Solo-Friendly Activities

One of the biggest reasons you should visit D.C. as a solo traveler is because of the abundance of solo-friendly activities and unique things to do around the city.

There are tons of museums and monuments around every corner, and as a solo traveler, you can pick and choose what you’re interested in. With over 70 museums around the city, you can spend several days checking out impressive collections.

Along the National Mall, you’ll find some of the best museums, including the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, the National Gallery of Art, and the National Air and Space Museum.

Checking out the city’s many monuments and memorials, including the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, and the World War II Memorial, is another must while in D.C.

You can even take a free tour of the White House, which was the coolest thing I did in D.C. — it just requires arranging it in advance (you can make a request 21 days to 3 months in advance, and it’s best to have some flexibility in the preferred dates and times of your visit.)

Easy To Get Around

Another reason I’d recommend D.C. for a solo trip is because it’s really easy to get around on your own. You don’t need a car, because it’s a very walkable city that also has good public transportation.

All of the museums and monuments mentioned above are walkable from each other.

If you want to give your feet a rest, you can also take D.C.’s Metro, which is well-connected and a quick way to get around the city.

It’s Very Safe

If you’re traveling on your own, especially as a solo female traveler, safety is probably a factor you take into consideration when choosing where to go.

D.C. is an extremely safe city, so you don’t have anything to worry about traveling here solo.

Obviously, you should always take safety precautions when traveling solo, but in general, D.C. is a very safe and secure place to visit.

Lots Of Different Neighborhoods

Washington, D.C. has a lot more to offer than just government buildings, museums, and monuments. Many of the top tourist attractions in D.C. are located in Downtown, which is why I’d recommend staying there as a first-time visitor.

Another great neighborhood to stay in is Georgetown. This historic neighborhood is a little further away from Downtown, but it’s incredibly picturesque and walkable.

While in D.C., you should also make sure to visit Chinatown and Dupont Circle, two other cool and lively neighborhoods.

Easy To Get To From Other Cities

Finally, D.C. is perfect for a solo trip because it’s easy to get to from other places in the U.S. More than 60 cities across the U.S. have regular nonstop flights to D.C.

There’s also a direct Metro line from the Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) to Downtown for just $6.

And if you’re already on the East Coast, you can take Amtrak to D.C. easily. The high-speed Acela train connects Boston, New York, and Philadelphia with D.C., while other Amtrak train lines connect Southern cities along the East Coast to D.C.

If you’re a digital nomad looking for the next place to explore, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better region than Latin America.

With vibrant cultures, remarkably low prices, jaw-dropping landscapes, and the type of food that most people only dream of, the places that make up this stunning region offer everything a modern-day professional could want and more.

Lately, though, three cities have emerged as Latin America’s trendiest digital nomad hotspots, and below, you’ll find out just why people can’t seem to get enough of them.

Mexico City

Though Mexico City has officially been dethroned by Cancun as the most visited destination in Mexico, the capital still holds that authentic city charm that catapulted it to international popularity in the first place.

What Mexico City lacks in beachy allure, it more than makes up for in culture, convenience, and endless networking opportunities.

And despite it not being a coastal destination, the city still boasts the type of mild, balmy weather most of us are pining after, especially now that we’ve grown tired of the bitter winter – the median yearly temperature is 15 °C (59 °F), and if that doesn’t scream “perfect” to you, I don’t know what does.

Another great way to improve your mental capacity would be to get inspired by the many, many cultural and historical attractions that give the city its unique, fascinating vibe.

The ancient ruins of Teotihuacan, the vibrant neighborhoods of Coyoacán, the murals of Diego Rivera, the city’s Historic Center, and Xochimilco are just a few of the must-see places to add to your bucket list.

More importantly, though, you’ll get to take in all that culture and beauty at a pretty reasonable price tag, especially if you choose your neighborhood right and avoid pricier areas like La Condesa.

Buenos Aires

While Buenos Aires has always been one of South America’s crown jewels, this year, it really has established itself as a top-tier bucket list destination for travelers from all over the world.

Digital nomads who can’t seem to choose between that city charm of European hotspots and the type of vibrant atmosphere and soul-warming food that can only be found in Latin America won’t have to compromise here – the Argentine capital promises the best of both worlds.

The birthplace of tango is home to more theaters, art galleries, and world-class eateries (which actually range from humble street carts to Michelin-starred restaurants) than you can count, nudging digital nomads to find a better work-life balance.

Don’t worry, you won’t have to leave your career on the back burner, either.

Buenos Aires is currently witnessing a surge in coworking spaces and innovative startups (mostly concentrated in Palermo Soho), so you won’t struggle to find professional or networking opportunities in the city at all.

What’s more, the exchange rate between the U.S. dollar and the Argentine Peso is currently more favorable than ever, so now might be the best time budgeting-wise to finally spend a couple of months (or even more) in Buenos Aires.

Medellin

Last but certainly not least on today’s roundup is Medellin, a place that’s repeatedly (1, 2) been hailed as one of the best digital nomad destinations in the world, and for good reason.

The Colombian gem boasts the type of perpetual spring-like climate, breathtaking natural sights, and welcoming local community that makes even the most stress-inducing work feel that much more bearable.

I highly recommend choosing one of the many coworking spaces in the area with open-air designs that make you feel like you’re working in the middle of a park without any of the noise or distractions – it’s perfect, really.

The community-centric atmosphere that can be felt all throughout the city also makes it easier for those traveling alone to integrate into the local culture and make long-lasting connections, both professional and, more importantly, personal.

And with that, Medellin manages to find a solution to every issue that might arise during your digital nomad adventures, offering the perfect shelter for you to grow as a professional and individual.

But another nation tipped to be one of the fastest-growing tourism destinations in 2024 is the beautiful island of Sri Lanka – and so far, it seems like that prediction is coming true.

The latest figures from Sri Lanka’s Tourism Authority show that the country experienced a surge in international visitors for the first two months of 2024 – both January and February were more than 100% up in 2023.

If that trend continues, Sri Lanka will almost certainly be one of the hottest travel destinations on the planet this year—so why should you consider it?

Amazing Cities And Nature

It’s hard to find a traveler who’s been to Sri Lanka and hasn’t absolutely loved it – the country just seems to push all the right buttons and leave people with long-lasting memories.

From the chaotic and exciting streets of Colombo to the beautiful riverside temples of Kandy – Sri Lanka’s cities allow you to sample a culture that is influenced by South India and Europe.

Venture away from the urban jungles, and you will find lush green hills and the chance to encounter exotic wildlife, including elephants.

As a small island, Sri Lanka is also blessed with beautiful beaches on almost every coast with some of the most iconic being Bentota Beach in the southwest and Mirissa Beach on the south coast close to Galle.

Incredibly Affordable

One thing that makes those incredible sights and attractions even more appealing is just how affordable Sri Lanka is.

If you’re willing to backpack and use hostels, you can often find a place to sleep for less than $10 a night, or if you prefer a little more comfort, you should be able to get a decent hotel with a nightly rate of $50 (maybe even less).

Ideal For Digital Nomads

When Sri Lanka first announced it was launching a digital nomad visa, it got a heck of a lot of travelers excited.

The visa allows you to stay for a year, provided you earn the minimum required amount (around $2,000 per month), and can be extended fairly easily.

The latest info from Nomadlist shows that you live in popular destinations such as Galle and Kandy for less than $1,300 per month.

Great At Any Time Of Year

Sri Lanka’s location and unique geographical mix of coastal lowlands and hilly inner regions mean that it can be an all-year-round destination – you just need to make sure you visit the right place at the right time.

The country enjoys warm weather throughout the year.

However, there are two main monsoon seasons: the Yala, which is concentrated in the southwest from April to June, and the Maha, which is worst on the east coast between November and March.

Festivals And Culture

Sri Lankan life is punctuated with many colorful festivals celebrating religion and the country’s history.

February 4 is Sri Lanka’s national Independence Day, while Sinhalese New Year is celebrated on April 13 this year, while Diwali – another hugely celebrated festival in Sri Lanka – takes place on October 31.

Solo Travelers Seem To Love It

For many, Sri Lanka reminds them of what it was like to travel around Southeast Asia many years ago.

The country is still relatively underrated and is a place where you can make up plans as you go along, something that solo travelers will always find appealing.

Simple To Visit

Before you travel, you need to grab yourself a Sri Lanka Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) visa, which will allow you double entry into the country for 30 days.

You apply for it online and there is a fee of $50 – the visa can be extended while you are in Sri Lanka for a further fee.

Sri Lanka is rated as a Level 2 travel advisory by the U.S. government, which means exercise increased caution.

While this is not the lowest level possible, Sri Lanka is generally safe for tourists provided you are sensible – the Level 2 is largely due to some civil unrest in the country back in the fall of 2023.

Traveling is one thing, but traveling solo is something that everyone should experience at least once in their life. Stepping outside of your comfort zone, trusting your instincts, and realizing you’re capable of way more than you thought is enlightening.

But once you’ve finally convinced yourself to take the leap and commit, the next big deciding factor is where do you go first?

According to experts, Japan was named as the top solo travel destination for 2024, so your questions have been answered! In 2023, the country saw an increase in U.S. visitors and is only expected to continue on its growth trajectory.

In an effort to foster the relationship between the two countries, the Japan Tourism Board announced a “U.S.-Japan Tourism Year 2024” initiative in the hopes of promoting tourism and cultural exchanges between both.

Modern sky-scrapers, snow-capped Mount Fuji, breathtaking coastal towns, it’s no surprise Japan is a popular choice for 2024.

A huge draw here is no doubt the safety ratings Japan receives each year. As one of the safest destinations in the world, it’s no surprise it attracts backpackers and solo venturers.

Most areas and cities are known for being quite safe, but like anywhere, it’s important to still remain alert during your travels!

If anything does happen, you’ll notice ‘Kobans’ dotted throughout neighborhoods – which are essentially ‘Police boxes’ used for contacting the local authorities as quickly as possible.

Another win for the country is their thriving travel and nomad community. Depending on where you’re staying, dorms can be found between $15-$30.

For us solo female travelers who aren’t quite as comfortable sharing accommodations with males, Tokyo has introduced the concept of ‘female-only hostels’ – which offer some peace of mind for many ladies out there.

These capsule hostels are clean, safe, affordable, and allow women to remain comfortable during their travels. They range between $20-40, which may seem pricier for a hostel, but if safety and being comfortable are priorities, then this is the option for you.

Of course, you’re bound to find a variety of unique experiences to try in Japan – it’s another country, after all, BUT what about unique experiences for solo travelers specifically?

Besides wandering the food markets on your own (which is an experience in and of itself) or cherry blossom hunting, there’s so many options. According to Flashpack, the top choices for solo travelers include having lunch with a sumo wrestler and meditating with monks in Kyoto.. Can you imagine?!

If hotels and hostels aren’t your cup of tea, then why not immerse yourself in Japanese tradition from the get-go?

If you want a taste of normal life, there are many companies that offer homestays to travelers. Most of them are targeted towards students, but if you do a little research, there are a few options for others.

With so much going and meeting new people, wanting a little relaxation is perfectly normal. A classic solo experience involves unwinding in one of Japan’s many Hot Pools. Cultural, calming, and a good way to enjoy alone time or meet fellow travelers, these pools can be found around the country (the most visited being Kurokawa Onsen).

It’s easy to become star-struck with the many different international destinations that are predicted to be trending in 2024.

Far-flung destinations like Tokyo or Dubai may be the ones of a lot of people’s lips right now, but there are destinations closer to home that have travelers talking.

One such location is California’s Napa Valley – a region that has been gaining international acclaim over the past year.

Known for its excellence as a distinguished wine region, Napa Valley has plenty more to offer besides tasting sessions, which is perhaps why it looks set to be a trending destination in the United States for 2024.

It’s Getting International Recognition

It really does seem like Napa Valley is catching on in a big way on the international scale.

The region was recently named the number one trending destination in Tripadvisor’s 2024 Travelers’ Choice Awards, as well as being included in Travel and Leisure’s prestigious Best Places To Travel in 2024 list.

And last year, the Napa town of Sonoma was named as a top trending destinations in the U.S. too – it’s hard to ignore when a place is consistently so highly regarded.

Award-Winning Venues

Napa Valley is one of only 12 wine regions in the world to be part of the Great Wine Capitals program – and the only one in North America.

Recently, it was bestowed with several major honors as part of the Great Wine Capitals 2024 Best of Wine Tourism awards.

Seven different Napa venues picked up awards across seven different categories including Four Seasons Resort & Residencies (Accommodations), Trefethen Family Vineyards (Innovative Wine Tourism Experiences), and Oakville Grocery & Wine Merchant (Wine Tourism Restaurants).

You Can Visit Year-Round

Naturally, the summer is a great time to visit Napa, with temperatures regularly hitting the low 80s from June to September.

Fall is also one of the most popular times as its harvest season for many grapes, so you may be able to witness first-hand one of the key stages of winemaking.

But even winter is not such a bad time to head on down to Napa – while it can be a little rainier than usual, temperatures usually hit the high 50s, and when it is sunny, it feels pleasantly warm compared to many places in the country.

Huge Choice Of Flights

Napa Valley is incredibly well serviced by several major airports, including San Francisco International, Oakland International, Sacramento International, and Sonoma County Airport.

All these airports are within a two-hour drive of the region, and the sheer volume of choice means you can nearly always find a cheap flight.

Hiring a car is one way to get there from these airports, alternatively from San Francisco you can catch a ferry to Vallejo and then use a transit bus from there known as the Vine.

More Than Just Wineries

While the Napa Valley region may be home to more than 400 different wineries, a nice glass of your preferred tipple is not the only reason to consider visiting this region.

There are some world-class golf courses in the area such as Silverado and Mount Saint Helena Golf Club, as well as the opportunity to absorb some of the fascinating history at the Napa Valley Museum in Yountville – it’s just $5 to go in.

Hangover Cures As Standard

Napa Valley is actually a great area for outdoor enthusiasts, as well as wine lovers.

The beautiful hills surrounding the valley are ideal for taking a cycling tour, which could help you sweat out your hangover if you overindulged a little on Napa’s finest produce.

You could even ease your weary head by taking a peaceful hot air balloon ride over the gold and green vistas – it’s perfect at sunset or sunrise.

The Event Scene Is Popping

There are many annual events held in the Napa Valley region that are growing in popularity with each passing year.

Naturally, many of them center around food and drink, such as the Napa Truffle Festival in January, or Calistoga’s Harvest Table in September.

There are also plenty of events for the more active including the Napa Valley Marathon in March, or for music lovers with several major festivals such as Napa Valley Jazz Getaway, Blue Note Jazz Festival, or Napa Porchfest.

Colombia has been one of the trendiest destinations of 2024.

Travelers have been flocking to this South American country in record numbers, lured by affordable prices, beautiful scenery, and vibrant cities.

There’s one city in particular that should be at the top of your travel bucket list — Cartagena.

Cartagena, Colombia is the perfect destination to visit this winter. This gorgeous, colorful city provides the perfect blend of history, culture, and beaches. It was recently named one of the best places to go in 2024 by Travel + Leisure.

History, Culture, And Beaches

Cartagena is a unique destination because it offers a great mix of history, culture, and beaches. The city is located right on the Caribbean coast of Colombia, and its strategic location means that it was an important port for hundreds of years.

Traveling to the Caribbean can be expensive. Most travelers don’t think of South America when they think of the Caribbean, but Colombia’s coast is indeed part of the Caribbean. You can definitely see, taste, and feel the Caribbean influence on Cartagena.

Colombia is one of the cheapest destinations in Latin America, so visiting Cartagena is a great way to get a taste of the Caribbean without breaking the bank.

To save money, consider staying outside the old town (the artsy Getsemani neighborhood just outside the city walls is a great choice) and eating local food instead of the pricier tourist restaurants.

Getting to Cartagena is also affordable. The budget carrier Spirit Airlines offers nonstop flights to Cartagena from Orlando, Miami, and Fort Lauderdale. There are also nonstop flights from Atlanta on Delta and New York on JetBlue and Avianca.

This makes Cartagena one of the best tropical destinations in Colombia if you’re looking for Caribbean vibes and culture.

Great For Solo Travelers

Another reason to visit Cartagena this winter? It’s great for solo travelers!

Many destinations in the Caribbean are not solo traveler-friendly, but Cartagena definitely is. There are tons of social hostels where solo travelers can stay, and if hostels aren’t your style, you can meet other travelers by doing activities like walking tours, cooking classes, or a boat trip.

Cartagena is also one of the best destinations in Colombia for solo female travelers because it’s one of the safest cities in the country.

Winter Has The Best Weather

Finally, winter is a great time to visit Cartagena because of the weather!

Cartagena has a year-round tropical climate, and there’s very little temperature variation throughout the year. Typically, the daily high is around 89° F, and the low is around 79° F. However, during the winter, it can be a couple of degrees cooler so it’s not quite as sweltering hot.

December through April is also considered the “dry season” in Cartagena. This means you’ll have sunnier weather with less rain. Additionally, it’s not as humid during the winter.

This makes winter the best time to visit by far — the weather in Cartagena can be oppressively hot and muggy during the summer, but winter is perfect!

These were the findings:

1. Occitanie, France

The stunning region that graces the shores of Southern France is probably best known for its diverse landscapes, ranging from the sun-soaked beaches of the Mediterranean to the rugged beauty of the Pyrenees.

Here, you can explore the historic marvels of Toulouse, the fairytale-like landscapes of Carcassone, and the vibrant markets of Montpellier.

As travel trends morph and evolve, tourists are starting to steer away from overcrowded landmarks and seek to indulge in outdoor adventures and breathtaking views instead, of which Occitanie has plenty.

2. Campania, Italy

Though the name “Campania” might sound unfamiliar to many, the gorgeous cities that dot the region are anything but unknown.
