New High-Speed Train Will Connect 2 Iconic U.S. Cities

California has been known to put its foot in its mouth, which makes sense with the growing yoga craze, but not when it comes to false promises.

As a 10-year California resident, I’ve learned to take any exciting news in the “Golden State” with a grain of salt, not knowing if it will ever come to fruition or if it will simply remain a headline etched in time.

Take the newly-opened Gaylord Resort in my hometown of Chula Vista, for example. It’s the last place in San Diego County you’d expect a waterfront oasis, but it did actually open (albeit to a mixed bag of reviews).

California has been promising thrilling new train routes for years, but where are they?

Local sources in Los Angeles have released new details for a high-speed route that’s promised to connect the outskirts of LA, taking travelers across the desert at blazing speeds to reach “Sin City”.

Though, many questions remain, we at Travel Off Path are stoked to reveal all 4 stops slated for Brightline’s new venture, helping you decide if hopping aboard a train from LA to Las Vegas is worth it, or if the quick flight or 4-hour drive are more suitable.

The Full Route: Where Brightline’s New Train Will Supposedly Go

Ever heard of Brightline? The relative newbie in the rail industry made a name for itself in recent years by connecting some of Florida’s most popular locales.

While Japan is the undisputed king of so-called “bullet trains”, Brightline has given American travelers hope to follow suit as the only true U.S. high-speed operator.

That’s not to say Amtrak’s time is up, especially since the iconic brand is launching new routes too, but Brightline is ready to set the West Coast abuzz with the task of cutting through California’s notorious red-tape stalemates.

That may be why travelers will have to wait a few years before the train is supposedly launched in December 2028.

Another downside is that the train will not go to LA proper — you know, Hollywood, Rodeo Drive, etc. — it departs from Rancho Cucamonga near Ontario, which is mostly known for being home to a great alternative airport to LAX.

From the LA outskirts toward Nevada, the whole route is set for launch as follows:
- Rancho Cucamonga
- Hesperia
- Victor Valley
- Las Vegas
To reach the LA city limits for typical tourist attractions, there will be an option to connect from Rancho Cucamonga by MetroLink.

Is The New Train Really Necessary?

There’s no shortage of travelers going back and forth from the bright lights of Hollywood to the even brighter lights of the neon-lit Strip.

Factoring in expected max speeds of 218 mph, plus 2 stops in between, the train tops out at roughly half the speed of a commercial jet.

While you may not have to deal with the hassle of TSA at train stations, California to Vegas is also a popular road trip, though traffic is notoriously bad in both major cities.

So, let’s lay out the options here:
- Amtrak does not service Las Vegas
- The drive from LA to Vegas takes roughly 4 hours (without headache-inducing traffic)
- Direct flights are frequent from every Southern California airport, lasting roughly an hour in the air
- Budget travelers can also hop aboard numerous buses to ride across the desert
Then there will be Brightline, claiming to connect this pair of iconic cities in 2 hours and 10 minutes, but most tourists will find themselves bored in the ‘burbs upon arriving in Rancho Cucamonga.

There’s also the well-documented aspect that both LA and Las Vegas are struggling to draw visitors right now, which begs the question if these are the right cities to connect when there are ample ways to reach either city, neither of which is living up to their usual vacation hotspot reputation.

Expected Ticket Prices

Here’s another doozy to consider — weighing costs has to come into consideration, too, when factoring in logistics.

While it’s tough to predict airfare 3 years from now, a quick Google search showed the cheapest LA-Vegas flight this weekend goes for $94 (Frontier).

You would get to Vegas in about an hour and pay less than what’s being reported.

One-way ticket prices are expected to be:
- $119 for standard class
- $133 for premium (may not be offered until 2031)

New Ultra-Cheap Flights Launching From U.S. To This Trendy Caribbean Paradise

Already thinking of your next sun-drenched Caribbean getaway this winter? Before you go ahead and spend hundreds of dollars on those ‘irresistible’ round-trip flights that are, in fact, not as cheap as they could be, you’ll want to hear this one out:

From November 15, Arajet, the Dominican Republic’s new budget carrier, will start ultra-affordable direct flights from Chicago to Punta Cana.

Home to postcard white-sand beaches hugged by teal seas, world-class resorts, and a lively entertainment district peppered with restaurants and nightclubs, it is one of the trendiest destinations in the Tropics, and it’s never been cheaper to get to:

At Last… Arajet Is Coming To Chicago!

You might not have come across Arajet in your flight searches before, but that’s because they’re a new airline launched in 2022, and until recently, they operated to and from select hubs across the Americas.

It has grown significantly since its launch, and by 2025, it will already serve destinations such as Miami (MIA), Newark (EWR), and even San Juan (SJU) in Puerto Rico.

Arajet isn’t exactly known for its top-notch service, comfy flying experience, and wide range of onboard amenities, but what they do excel at is their unbeatable prices. That is, if you’re flying at the lowest possible fare, with carry-on only.

From Miami, round-trip tickets average only $196 flying to Punta Cana (PUJ), and from Newark (EWR) to Santo Domingo, the culture-loaded capital of the Dominican Republic, you can expect to pay roughly $208 both ways.

Given their low-cost appeal, it was about time they finally debuted in the Midwest market:

$234 Roundtrip Fares Going To Punta Cana

From November 15, Arajet service will begin between Chicago O’Hare (ORD) and Punta Cana, with base round-trip fares currently estimated at $234 (without extras).

We’re sure this might increase as time goes on, but for now, the predicted frequency is three-times-weekly flights, with the operation days as follows:
- From Punta Cana (PUJ): Tuesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays
- From Chicago O’Hare (ORD): Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays
Outbound flights departing from Chicago have a listed departure of 10:27 A.M. from ORD, arriving to PUJ at 5:12 P.M. for a total flight time of 4h45.

Meanwhile, return flights from PUJ are expected to depart at 5:47 A.M. (who here’s an early bird?), touching down back in ORD at 8:57 A.M. just in time for breakfast at Berghoff Cafe in Terminal 1.

What To Expect Flying Arajet

When it comes to Arajet’s bag allowance, you should know it uses the common low-cost carrier structure:
- ‘Base’ fare: personal item only, with no free carry-on or checked luggage
- ‘Comfort’: larger carry allowance or one checked baggage, depending on route
- ‘Extra’: checked baggage, priority boarding, and add-ons you’d typically have to pay for are included
As of now, the average fares for the Comfort and Extra fares from Chicago to Punta Cana haven’t been formally disclosed, but based on Arajet’s historical pricing, we can expect Comfort to start at approximately $253 and Extra at $269.

Once again, these are estimates, and final prices depend on seat availability, seasonal demand, and other factors.

Either way, there’s no denying Arajet will be a stone in American and United’s shoes, and perhaps even Frontier’s, once they enter the Chicago market.

With American Airlines, the cheapest round-trip tickets going to Punta Cana from O’Hare are $328. With United, that’s an even pricier $348, and with Frontier, they average $328.

Summer might be over, but travel isn’t slowing down anytime soon.

At least that’s what the experts over at the American Automobile Association (AAA) revealed in their Fall Travel Trends report – both domestic and international travel is on the rise.

And I don’t know about you, but I’ve always found the season’s cozy vibe to match perfectly with something more low-key, think a road trip or a short n’ sweet getaway someplace close to home.

That’s why today, we’re delving into the 5 most popular cities you can visit this fall right here in the U.S., so if you were missing a bit of inspiration, consider it found!

5. Las Vegas, Nevada

We can gush over trendy, underrated gems all we want; there are just some places that never go out of style.

And there’s no better example of that than Vegas.

In 2024, the city is still one of the country’s biggest draws, promising endless opportunities for outdoor adventures, exceptional food experiences, and, of course, a legendary entertainment scene.

With temperatures that are warm yet comfortable (think mid-60s to mid-80s), fall in Vegas is the perfect time to go hiking in Red Rock Canyon or strolling around the Bellagio Conservatory & Botanical Gardens – you know, to fully get in touch with the local flora (and get some incredible pictures while you’re at it, too).

And yes, the fall show calendar is as exciting as you’d expect, featuring some of the biggest names in the music industry right now, including (but not limited to): Adele, Carrie Underwood, Lionel Richie, Maroon 5, Santana, and Sania Twain.

4. Denver, Colorado

If jaw-dropping natural views and a more classic fall experience are what you’re after, you can’t go wrong with Denver.

The Colorado gem not only serves as a gateway to the Rocky Mountains, where you’ll probably find the most postcard-worthy fall views in all of the U.S., but also gives you everything you might need for that perfect city break this time of year.

Amazing craft beer and even better food? Check.

3. Seattle, Washington

While the Washington hub has dropped a couple of spots in the ranking now that temperatures have started to cool off, its status as one of the country’s most visit-worthy cities remains unchanged.

Though a trip here can be quite pricey, Seattle has so much to offer travelers that most of us agree the splurge is worth it.

I’m telling you right off the bat to expect some of the city’s famous drizzle.

Notice my word choice though, while it does rain quite a bit here in Seattle, the rains are usually so sparse that they won’t affect your travel plans at all – they’ll just add a layer of cozy, autumnal bliss to your trip.

And when you combine that with the views of the Washington Park Arboretum, the pungent coffee smell that comes off of all the independent cafes that dot the city, and the authentic feel of Pike Place Market, you get the ultimate fall experience.

2. Boston, Massachusetts

This next one was a bit of a wild card since Boston doesn’t make it to these kinds of lists very often, and even when it does, it’s usually touted as a wintery hub.

But with how safe, charming, and steeped in history the city is, I’m happy to see that Americans are giving it the attention it deserves even during this shoulder season.

Now’s hands down the perfect time to go on a sightseeing tour through the Freedom Trail, Faneuil Hall, and Beacon Hill (you can even book one of these boat tours that paint the city from another perspective), so if I were you, I’d start planning something ASAP.

1. Orlando, Florida

Sunshine and the promise of a great time is hard to resist no matter the time of year, and that’s exactly why we can’t seem to get enough of Orlando even now that summer’s officially over.

But if you ask me, fall’s actually a much better time to visit the iconic Florida city, and it seems like many people have caught on to that.

The weather, while warmer than in most other places, is still mild enough for walking around without having to stop for water breaks every two seconds. The crowds have notably decreased, and Magic Kingdom’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party is a must-attend for every Disney lover.

While there’s no such thing as the perfect fall getaway, I’ve always believed that something short and sweet, a trip that doesn’t take you too far away from home is as close to it as you can get.

No expensive intercontinental flights, no hours trying to figure out the currency exchange rates, no getting lost somewhere you’ve never been before – just a fun, stress-free vacation that’ll make transitioning into the colder months feel that much easier.

I know that some of you might be trying to get out of that “been there, done that” rut, but luckily for you, Book Retreats just came out with a new study that’ll provide plenty of inspiration to feed your wanderlust.

The company ranked the best places (attractions) to visit in the U.S. based on a dataset of over 7,500 visitor reviews, analyzing critical criteria like overall experience, popularity, nearby hotel costs, safety, and price complaints.

So if you want to go somewhere you know you’ll have an amazing time this season, just read through the list below and take your pick!

5. Times Square

I know, I know—Times Square seems like the most obvious touristy choice, but the truth is that places get popular for a reason.

Despite the rowdy crowds sometimes being too overwhelming to handle, this classic New York gem still manages to hold onto its all-American charm.

And even though Times Square’s never fully quiet, those lucky enough to come here during fall will find that it’s far less chaotic compared to summer or winter – so if you want to take in the bright billboards, grab a slice of New York-style pizza, and people watch in peace now’s the best time to book those tickets.

If that’s not enough to convince you, accommodation also tends to get cheaper this time of year, which is a huge plus considering the usual price levels in the area.

This hotel just a one-minute walk away from the square currently has available rooms for as little as $180 a night.

4. Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History

If you want to switch things up this season and see something truly incredible, you can’t go wrong with a trip to the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, which (bonus point!) is located right inside another one of the attractions that made it to today’s list, so you can plan a 2-in-1 situation to get the most out of your time off.

Not only will you get to see everything from dinosaur fossils to the iconic Hope Diamond, but the museum also curates special exhibits that align with the season – right now, this means themes of wildlife migration, harvest traditions, and so much more.

Before you ask, entry is completely free of charge but that also means that you’ll have to deal with some big crowds and long wait lines, so do your best to avoid peak times.

3. Balboa Park

Next, we have a nature lover’s dream (and one of my personal favorites): San Diego’s stunning Balboa Park.

You don’t even have to be big on plants to have a fantastic time here.

Between the museums, aesthetic gardens, and Spanish Colonial Revival architecture, everyone will find something to love—including the famous San Diego Zoo.

And with a 97% rate of positive reviews, you’re all but guaranteed an amazing time here.

2. National Mall

Are you intrigued by the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History we talked about before?

I have good news for you—it’s located right inside the National Mall in D.C., one of North America’s greatest cultural and historical attractions.

Here, you’ll get to experience everything from the Washington Monument to the National Gallery of Art; that is, when you’re not too busy admiring an outdoor installation, a touching memorial, or a one-of-a-kind art piece – all of which are scattered all over the place!

You don’t have to travel around the world to have an exceptional break this fall.

In fact, some U.S. destinations are so popular that they are attracting record numbers of both domestic and international visitors.

The U.S. is experiencing an unprecedented increase in domestic tourism this year, and 3 iconic destinations in particular are benefiting from this.

Orlando, Las Vegas, and Chicago have now entered the chat!

Smaller crowd levels, special events, and cooler temperatures are just some of the reasons why these 3 iconic and popular destinations are best visited in the fall:

Orlando

The leading destination for domestic travel in the U.S. is Orlando.

This year the city should exceed an incredible 54 million visitors from across the states.

Orlando is best known as the land of epic theme parks, with people traveling from around the world to visit Walt Disney World and Universal Studios here.

But as someone who’s visited Disney World in August, I really wouldn’t recommend it unless storms and extreme humidity are your idea of a good time! Instead visit in the fall when the weather is much more comfortable, and the crowd levels are lower too.

Top tip: Visit when kids are still in school for the lowest possible crowd levels everywhere you go.

Walt Disney World is decorated for Halloween from the first week of August (nothing like being prepared early!) and on select nights between August 9 and October 31, 2024 you can attend Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party in the Magic Kingdom park.

Event tickets are $119 to $199 per ticket, plus tax, depending on the date you choose to attend.

If you like your Halloween theme park celebrations with a bit more gore, then Universal Studios will host Halloween Horror Nights in the fall season.

This is a scary event not aimed at kids as you’ll face 10 terrifying haunted houses, 5 sinister scare zones, outrageous live entertainment.

Tickets range from $129.99, plus tax, per person to $239.99, plus tax, per person.

Las Vegas

Las Vegas is America’s undisputed party capital and its second most visited destination with 35 million visitors forecast this year.

Like Orlando, the heat here can be relentless during the summer months, but by fall, the weather is perfect.

Warm, sunny, and with endless blue skies. Expect temperatures in the 80s.

When you can tear yourself away from the airconditioned casinos, you can dine outdoors and head out into the desert for hikes and ATV adventures in Las Vegas in the fall.

But the weather isn’t the only reason to visit Las Vegas in the fall. There’s also a lot going on! In addition to the abundance of Halloween events and fall festivities, October is Las Vegas’s PRIDE month.

A great month to be in the city.

If you’re interested in motorsports the South Point 400 is coming to the Las Vegas Motor Speedway this fall too. This is a huge weekend in the motorsports calendar with tickets starting from just $20, making it a great budget day out too.

Top tip: If you want to explore Vegas but (like me) don’t love big crowds, then there are plenty of places to escape the masses. Escape the strip and explore the city’s outdoor destinations.

Great day trip options include the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area or taking a dip in the Gold Strike Canyon Hot Springs.

Fall is the perfect time to visit these Springs, which are closed from May through September due to extreme desert temperatures.

Chicago

In third position is the Windy City of Chicago, with a whopping 30 million visitors this year.

And if you’re looking for a riot of fall colors and traditional fall activities then Chicago is by far the best city on this list to visit this fall season.

Fall is cooler here, so be sure to pack a sweater.

Head to Lincoln Park and the Millennium Park and Lurie Garden to see some of the best examples of fall foliage in the city. A great activity for budget travelers, with entry to all public parks in the city free of charge.

Fall foods and brews hog the spotlight in Chicago at this time of year.

There’s no need to fly all the way to Germany to celebrate Oktoberfest: You can join in the celebrations in Chicago!

At the Saint Alphonsus Oktoberfest celebration, adults can sample 20 different craft beers. Entrance costs $40 and includes a souvenir glass and pretzel necklace.

Fall in Chicago is traditional and cozy, so I think the best thing to do in the city at this time of year is to really embrace that.

Think apple picking, pumpkin patches, corn mazes, and more. Embrace the seasonal fun!

Americans Can Fly Nonstop To This Hugely Popular Portugal Destination From 11 U.S. Cities

An abundance of new nonstop flights has made Europe more accessible than ever for U.S. travelers this summer.

And the good news is that that’s a trend set to continue into fall too!

More American travelers have visited Portugal this year than ever before.

According to Portugal Resident more than a million travelers from the U.S. visited the country between January and June this year.

This is a figure that has almost doubled in 2 years, which is frankly incredible!

The reason? The Capital and largest city in Portugal, Lisbon, is connected to a whopping 11 different U.S. cities.

Flying Nonstop To Lisbon

During the summer months, you can fly nonstop to Lisbon from 11 U.S. cities, and flights from 7 cities operate year-round.

New York, Chicago, Miami, Washington D.C., Philadelphia, Boston, and San Francisco are the seven cities offering year-round flights that you can book right now.

January is the cheapest month to fly from the U.S. to Lisbon, with nonstop return flights available for under $500 if you book now.

However, flights in October and November are just as affordable, with options under $600, and these are the best months to visit the city.

I looked at nonstop flight options for October and found that New York and Miami were the 2 most affordable cities to fly from.

Flying from New York to Lisbon from October 14 to October 22 will cost $614 for a nonstop return trip.

This flight is with Air Portugal with an outbound flight time of 6 hours 55 minutes and an inbound flight time of 8 hours.

United Airlines also operates on this route if you’d prefer a U.S. carrier, but for the same dates the flight cost was $1,214.

If Miami is a more convenient departure airport or connection point for you, you’ll be pleased to hear that Miami is the second cheapest U.S. departure airport for Lisbon in October.

A nonstop round trip in economy class departing on October 16 and returning on October 23 will cost $715.

This flight is with Air Portugal and has an outbound flight time of 8 hours 20 minutes and an inbound flight time of 9 hours 10 minutes.

Alternatively, you could fly the same route on the same dates with JetBlue for $1,236.

Why Visit Lisbon?

Europe is historically the stomping ground of us Brits during the summer months, with Britons topping the list of visitor numbers for almost every European country.

But you’re just as likely to bump into an American tourist than a British one in Lisbon this year.

And it’s easy to see why!

As well as the incredible connectivity, Lisbon is also an amazing city to explore. Lisbon is Portugal’s hilly, coastal capital city.

In the summer you can have the best of both worlds’ here: culturally significant historical sites and lazy beach days.

This means you can experience Europe’s beaches and its rich history in one city.

If you like mild weather and fewer crowds, fall is the best time to explore Lisbon.

Because it is such a culturally fascinating city, I love Lisbon in the fall, when the temperature is cool enough for plenty of walking and exploring.

Some of the best things to see and do in Lisbon include climbing to the Castle of São Jorge and then strolling through Alfama.

The Castle of Sao Jorge sits on Lisbon’s highest hill and looks over the city, making it one of the most iconic attractions. Entrance costs €15,00 ($16.60) per adult.

Be sure to visit the Praça do Comércio which is is a large, harbour-facing plaza and one of the most picturesque plazas in the city. Entrance is free and this is a great place to sit, relax, and people watch.

Art enthusiasts shouldn’t miss MAAT – the Art, Architecture and Technology Museum which is in the heart of the city overlooking the water. The building is a modern architectural wonder in its own right!

Tickets cost €11.00 ($12) per person, but plan your trip in advance because the Museum is only open from Wednesday to Monday.
