According to CN Traveler readers who participated in their yearly survey, the best city for visiting in the U.S. is Chicago, Illinois.

Though it is a city best known for boasting great connectivity to other global destinations through its busy O’Hare International Airport, which officially serves as an intermediate stop for many Americans going abroad, Chicago is so much more than a mere transit hub.

Topping the CN Traveler list ‘yet again‘, it is the third-largest city in the States, home to beautiful architecture, an inspiring underground music scene, and most importantly, an amazing local cuisine.

Incredible Cuisine

Not that many American cities are renowned for their local food.

The U.S. may be a colossal state, but as it is a nation built by and for migrants, food is either heavily influenced by third cultures or directly imported from other countries, lacking the traditional aspect of it.

Chicago is no exception, as it does not have a wealth of native ingredients and dishes itself, but on the other hand, it is known for its creative take on world cuisine and numerous delicacies.

These include the Chicago-style hot dog, the Italian-inspired beef sandwich, and Chicago Barbecue.

The most iconic of them, deep-dish pizza, is baked around a steel pan, resembling an upside-down pie filled with mozzarella cheese.

In fact, Chicago’s architectural display is of the reasons why it is so admired by outsiders.

A Fascinating Mix Of Old And New

Strolling along the Chicago River, which cuts through the heart of the city and branches out into several smaller canals, you will meet clusters upon clusters of modern skyscrapers, including the landmark, 110-storey Willis Tower.

The best neighborhood for viewing historical buildings is the Old Town, settled by Germans in the 1850s, and a protected zone with a well-preserved Victorian-era townscape.

St Michael’s Church in the Old Town is one of the few buildings in Chicago, alongside the Water Tower, to have survived the Great Fire of 1871, responsible for destroying much of the earlier historical settlement.

If you’re the museum type and would like a deeper cultural immersion beyond just sightseeing, the Art Institute of Chicago and the lesser-known Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures are not to be missed.

Here are the warmest national parks to check out this winter:

1. Death Valley National Park

After being closed since August due to flooding caused by summer storms, Death Valley National Park is expected to reopen on October 15, just in time for visitors to enjoy it this winter.

Death Valley is famous for being the hottest place on Earth, with a record high of 134° F. During the summer, the average daily high is as much as 116° F. Even in the spring and fall, daytime temperatures regularly exceed 90° F, making it difficult to enjoy being outside at this national park.

This makes winter the best time to visit Death Valley National Park. The “coldest” months to visit are December and January, when the average daily high is still 67° F.

2. Everglades National Park

Another warm national park to visit during the winter is Florida’s Everglades National Park. Located about one hour from Miami, this national park is the largest area of tropical wilderness in the United States, known for its unique climate and abundance of wildlife.

During the summer, the heat and humidity at this national park are out of control, with temperatures regularly exceeding 90° F for six months out of the year.

However, winter is the milder dry season, where you can still enjoy warm weather but not have to deal with excessive humidity or rain. From December through February, the average high at Everglades National Park is around 77° F.

3. Saguaro National Park

Another great national park to visit in the winter is Saguaro National Park in Arizona. Located just outside Tucson, this national park is home to the largest cacti in the United States.

While during the summer, it can be hard to appreciate the desert beauty of this national park with temperatures exceeding 100° F, winter is the perfect time to go.

In the winter, the average weather is in the mid-sixties and sunny.

4. Big Bend National Park

Big Bend National Park in Texas is another warm national park to check out during the winter. Although it has an isolated location in West Texas, it’s worth the long drive to visit this beautiful national park.

Big Bend is known for being one of the best stargazing locations in the United States, thanks to the lack of light pollution. You can also enjoy hiking, hot springs, and more at this national park. During the summer, temperatures at Big Bend can soar above 90° F.

However, it’s much cooler in the winter with average temperatures in the low sixties during the day.

5. Joshua Tree National Park

Finally, California’s Joshua Tree National Park is best visited in the winter. This is another scorching-hot place to go during the summer, with temperatures around 100° F. It’s hard to enjoy the otherworldly landscapes of this national park that’s about 2.5 hours from Los Angeles when it’s so hot.

But things cool off significantly during the winter, while still remaining warm and pleasant. During December and January, the average daily high is in the low sixties.

This makes winter the best time to go and enjoy Joshua Tree National Park.

This fall is a perfect time to venture into a charming small town with more to offer than you’d think.

Here are ten special, corky, fun, and unique small towns to visit in the south that will make your fall travels unique:

10. Fredericksburg, Texas

Just a hop, skip, and a jump away from Austin, Texas, this small town offers an array of things to do. Fredericksburg is a town of German heritage and award-winning wineries.

Because Germans settled in the town in the 19th century, the city offers a unique blend of German traditions and Texas culture, especially when it comes to food. You can feast on traditional German sausages, apple strudel, and pretzels. For more of a food adventure, you can try a Texas-style schnitzel with guacamole and Monterey Jack cheese.

Despite being a small town, the area is lively, with downtown bars, breweries, and many historic museums.

9. Folly Beach, South Carolina

With the word beach in the name, it’s pretty clear that one of the main attractions of this southern town is the vast stretch of sand and ocean.

While fall is not optimal beach weather, you can still enjoy soothing walks along Folly Beach. You may even be lucky and see dolphins known to pass by the shore.

There is also kayaking and surfing if you want to venture into the water.

The area has a saying, “ Relax, Slow Down, It’s Folly.” So when at the end of the year and responsibilities start to pile up, Folly can be a great escape from the madness of everyday life.

While the town boasts of chill vibes, they aren’t short on entertainment. Folly Beach has its 50 Years of Folly celebration during the fall. It is an event that has street festivals, a classic car show, discos on the pier, and fun for all ages.

8. Tybee Island, Georgia

A barrier island close to Savannah, Georgia, Tybee Island can easily be overlooked as a place to visit. Yet, there is a wide variety of experiences the island has to offer.

The island is known for delicious and fresh seafood. And if you have a sweet tooth, you can visit The Sugar Shack, which has over 30 years of service and the best hand-dipped ice cream.

Besides enjoying delicious food, you can join a nature tour to learn about estuaries and see if you can find a shark tooth or other unique sea finds.

7. Sanibel, Florida

If you don’t know, there is more to Florida than the Keys, Orlando, and Miami. However, without a beautiful beach, Florida wouldn’t be the great state it is. Sanibel lives up to that standard by offering an assortment of beaches.

One unique aspect of Sanibel’s beaches is that you can collect a variety of seashells and even find sand dollars. Just ensure no hermit crabs or other creatures live in the shell you’d like to collect.

If you want more wildlife than the critters you can find on the beach, check out J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge. This education center offers visitors the chance to learn about the migration of birds that are threatened or endangered.

6. Fairhope, Alabama

Have you heard of the ‘Julibee’? Well, that is what Fairhope, Alabama, is known for. It is when shrimp, crabs, and flounder abundantly swarm the bay. It’s a Fisherman’s easiest day of work and quite the site to see for tourists.

Another hotspot in Fairhope is the Fairhope Brewing Company. In 2012, they opened with just two beers on tap and now have 14 beers and ciders for guests to try. You can also participate in the brewery’s trivia and live music nights and introduce your taste buds to exotic flavors like a sour ale.

Fall is a great time to visit Fairhope’s weekly farmers market and art walks.

5. Blowing Rock, North Carolina

If you’re wondering how this town got its name, it’s because of its 4,000-foot cliff that stands above a beautiful gorge and lush forest.

This small town is a great place to catch the fall foliage and host several fall festivals throughout the season.

4. Dahlonega, Georgia

Dahlonega was once known for being a literal gold mind. In 1838, the U.S. Branch Mint coined $6 million in gold. While gold mining is no longer a way to become rich, panini for gold is often a practice of many locals and tourists in this town.

One of the town’s biggest fall highlights includes the Gold Rush Days Festival at the end of October, with over 200 arts and crafts exhibitors, a parade, and a gold panning contest. It’s not surprising that the festival was voted one of the “Top 20 Events in the Southeast” by the Southeast Tourism Society.

3. Gatlinburg, Tennessee

Gatlinburg is the place to visit if you’re looking for a small town with big-city vibes. Perhaps one of the most unique attractions is the Gatlinburg Pinball Museum, where you can see over 100 retro arcade games and pinball machines and play them.

If you’re looking for stimulation outside of an electric box, you can try the Gatlinburg Adventure Park, which includes a zipline, treetop obstacle courses, and gondola rides.

2. Beaufort, South Carolina

For travelers who marvel at design and architecture, prepare to fall in love with the well-preserved mansions and plantations of Beaufort, South Carolina. Visiting Front Street, you’ll find styles such as Queen Anne-influenced architecture, Greek Revival, and Gothic Revival.

Take a horse-drawn carriage tour to understand the town’s beauty and history. This way, you’ll feel like you’re stepping back in time as you learn how the town came to be.

1. St. Augustine, Florida

St. Augustine is a city that is growing in popularity. One of the main attractions is the cobblestone street, St. George Street. You can find restaurants, souvenir shops, historical spots, and many more attractions there.

If you want a unique experience, you can head onboard the Black Raven Pirate Ship. This ship sets sail three times a week for those who are 21 and over. Crew members are dressed in pirate attire and provide fun activities and dancing throughout the trip.

Fairbanks, Alaska

It should go without saying that Alaska is the number one best place in America to see the northern lights. While there are many Alaskan towns to choose from, many hail Fairbanks as being the top spot.

Arcadia National Park, Maine

While the northeast of the country might be the most populated area and therefore the most brightly lit sky, it is still possible to find corners of this region with skies dark enough to witness the northern lights.

Maine in general is known to be a great state for viewing the lights, and the ever-popular Arcadia National Park is an ideal place to base yourself. Make sure to dress accordingly here though, as the cold winter gusts from the ocean make for some low temps.

Mount Washington, New Hampshire

For the past few years, the Mount Washington Observatory has recorded catching the northern lights, making this area another option for witnessing the phenomena in the northeast region of the country.

The surrounding White Mountains have zero light pollution, and therefore catching the aurora is more likely than other areas of the state.

Headlands International Dark Sky Park, Michigan

The start of Michigan is home to six internationally designated Dark Sky Parks, otherwise known as natural areas that protect true darkness.

It goes without saying that these dark sky areas in the northern parts of the U.S. would be prime places to catch the northern lights in the winter, not to mention the Milky Way in the summer months.

If you visit Headlands, feel free to bring blankets and sleeping bags, but know camping is not permitted. So, while you can sleep over and visit at all hours to watch the sky, don’t plan on pitching a tent.

The Apostle Islands, Wisconsin

This group of 22 islands lies off the coast of Northern Wisconsin, situated in the waters of Lake Superior. This area is a National Lakeshore and welcomes visitors year-round, although it does ask people to remain informed as the current ever-changing weather conditions.

Even if don’t catch the aurora here, you can still explore the cliff-like islands jutting out of the lake, frozen over and completely mesmerizing.

Malletts Bay, Vermont

If you are lucky enough to find yourself in either the stunning upstate New York region of the Adirondack Mountains or in Vermont’s picturesque city of Burlington, then making your way to Malletts Bay to catch the northern lights in the winter is a must-do. The area forms a type of peninsula into Lake Champlain, and this is where many of the aurora chasers come to try their luck.

The peninsula is home to Causeway Park and Mills Point, where you can get comfy and gaze up into the northern sky while waiting for your natural light show to start. The popular nearby resort area of Stow is also a good place to try and catch the lights if you are here on a foliage or ski vacation.

Glacier National Park, Montana

As one of the most visited national parks in the country, Montana’s Glacier National Park is a great place to try and watch the lights dance above Montana’s Rocky Mountains.

Some of the best viewing places in the park include the glacier-carved Lake McDonald and the lodge there is a nice place to stay as well.

Looking Glass Road also has multiple viewpoints that are popular with aurora watchers, and for a more remote location, you can try Bowman and Kintla lakes.

Voyageurs National Park, Minnesota

Tucked away in northern Minnesota on the Canadian border, you can find one of the least visited National Parks, lake-laden Voyageurs National Park, a prime place to try and catch the northern lights this winter.

Most campsites are great places to wait for the lights, as are the Rainy Lake Visitor Center and the boat launch areas of Kabetogama Lake and Ash River.

This year alone, there are over 5 celebrations around Boston. Breweries decorated, people donning lederhosen and dirndls, oompah bands, and free-flowing beer: you’re sure to have a good time at any one of these!

For a day of family fun, Harvard Square celebrates its legendary Oktoberfest celebration each year with a music parade, sidewalk sales, and an array of food vendors and beer gardens.

Winter may not be the season you think of when it comes to visiting U.S. national parks.

Road tripping to a national park is a classic summer pastime, but you might be surprised to learn that winter can actually be a better time to plan your trip, especially for budget travelers.

Why? Winter is the off season at most national parks in the United States, which means that you can enjoy lower prices and fewer crowds.

Many national parks look different (but equally as beautiful) in the winter compared to the more popular summer season. As long as you don’t mind bundling up for the cold weather, you can enjoy a great winter trip to U.S. national parks.

Here are the national parks that are best visited during the winter in order to save money, according to a study from The Manual.

1. Yellowstone National Park

Yellowstone National Park is America’s first national park and one of its most popular. November and December are the best months to visit Yellowstone to save money, with average hotel rates at 50% compared to the peak months of June and July.

Although Yellowstone gets very cold during the winter and some roads become impossible from mid-December to mid-March, a November or early December trip is a great time to visit to save money and still enjoy this iconic national park.

2. Rocky Mountain National Park

Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado is the fourth most-visited national park in the United States. Like Yellowstone, it’s most expensive to visit in June and July.

But hotel rates in nearby Estes Park (the town closest to the national park) fall from $180 per night to $85 per night during the months of November, December, and January.

Winter is a fantastic time to visit Rocky Mountain National Park because of the beautiful snow-capped peaks and landscapes and numerous outdoor recreation options. You can try snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, sledding, and more during the winter.

3. Zion National Park

Summer is a popular time to visit Zion National Park, along with spring and fall. In fact, hotel rates near Zion in the towns of St. George and Hurricane are highest from February through April, while they are 25% to 30% less in December and January.

Winter is a good time to visit Zion because, unlike the previous two parks on this list, the weather is not nearly as cold in December and January (although you’ll still want to bundle up!)

Zion’s rocky red cliffs and peaks are even prettier during the winter when covered by a light dusting of snow, and you can enjoy this park without the usual major crowds.

4. Grand Canyon National Park

Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona is the second most popular national park in the United States. Millions of visitors flock to this national park every year to see the iconic landscapes of the Grand Canyon, which is 277 miles long and 18 miles wide.

The most expensive time to visit this national park is April, May, and June when hotel rates top $200 per night. However, in December and January, you can find hotels nearby for as little as $75 per night and enjoy this popular national park without the crowds.

5. Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Finally, Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a great one to visit in the winter. This national park on the border of Tennessee and North Carolina is the most visited in the world.

Peak season is July through October, but those who visit during the winter months of December and January can find better deals on hotels in nearby Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg.

Being located in the Southern United States, winter in Great Smoky Mountains National Park is not quite as cold as other parts of the country, although it can still be quite chilly.
