Recent data from the Icelandic Tourist Board shows that American travelers accounted for almost 30% of Iceland’s incoming tourism in 2023, the highest out of any country and a significant increase on the previous year.

So, just what is it about ‘the Land of Fire and Ice’ that is attracting American travelers in their droves right now?

If there’s one thing Iceland is more famous for than its glaciers, volcanoes, and beautiful scenery, it’s for being a very safe country.

It consistently ranks as one of the safest in the world, according to the Global Peace Index and U.S. State Department.

Crime rates are extremely low here, and in all honesty, the main safety considerations you need to be aware of have to do with Mother Nature and not human beings.

Ideal For Solo Travelers

Many aspects of Iceland make it a haven for solo travelers.

The excellent safety record mentioned above is combined with a country where English is fairly widely spoken, and people are generally friendly and welcoming.

There are also many hostels if you’re the kind of solo traveler who likes to make friends, while many of the activities and attractions here are great if you prefer solitude – gazing out onto majestic glaciers, anyone?

Unique Scenery And Landscapes

Perhaps the main reason to visit Iceland is for the unique landscapes and geological phenomena that make up this amazing island.

Made up of dramatic mountain ranges, volcanic fields, huge glaciers, and countless hot geysers and springs – Iceland leaves a long-lasting impression on almost all who visit it.

In many cases, it can feel like you’re visiting another planet, not just another country.

The country is also relatively small, so it’s easy to get around and see different parts of it, but it’s usually best to do this on guided tours, especially in the colder months when heavy snow can make driving very challenging.

Great Chance To See The Northern Lights

The year 2024 might see some of the best auroras in the past 20 years thanks to the cycles of our sun and the solar system.

And Iceland is probably one of the best places to witness this spectacle thanks to its extreme northern location and longer nights in the winter months.

Usually, the best time to see the Northern Lights in Iceland is from September to March, so if you act fast, you may still be able to catch some of that early spring action.

Fascinating Culture And People

While they can sometimes seem a little reserved at first, Icelandic people are kind-hearted and friendly in general.

The family unit is hugely important to Icelandic people and there are many national holidays that celebrate the different aspects of it, such as Men’s Day and Women’s Day.

Food is another charming part of Iceland’s culture with popular dishes including fresh fish, smoked lamb, and also a type of yoghurt known as skyr.

Cheap To Fly To

There’s no escaping that Iceland is quite an expensive country to visit; however, you can save a lot on the flight if you shop around.

We recently revealed that the capital Reykjavik is one of the cheapest European destinations you can fly to from the U.S. this spring – from as little as $140 one-way.

Iceland has also just renovated and expanded a new airport in the north of the country called Akureyri International.

While you cannot fly here directly from the U.S., you can from some European cities such as London, and it also allows you to fly internally from Reykjavik – a sometimes cheaper and quicker alternative than a road trip across the country.

Volcanoes Not Stopping Travel

There has been a well-documented increase in volcanic activity in Iceland over the past few months, with an eruption near the southwestern town of Grindavik causing evacuations.

This activity was declared to have been completed by the Icelandic Met Office on February 8 this year.

Because Iceland is so used to volcanic activity, it has a very sophisticated monitoring and warning system, so you can be reassured that unless it’s an unprecedented eruption like Eyjafjallajökull in 2010, which grounded 100,000 flights, you should be fine to visit.

If you’re anything like me, the thought of the approaching winter is enough to send a shiver up your spine.

Cold, dark, and wet days are just not compatible with me, and I’m sure there are plenty of other travelers out there who feel the same.

For this merry band of sun seekers, there are many options available to us to help us find some winter sun and extend our intake of vitamin D long into the colder months.

And in the United States, travelers are lucky enough to have a unique and breathtakingly beautiful winter sun destination right on their doorstep.

I am, of course, talking about the Florida Keys. And luckily for all winter avoiders, there are a host of great reasons to take a trip down to this idyllic archipelago right now.

More Ways To Get There

This is a common occurrence with each winter, but it’s worth noting that the airline capacity is increasing drastically to the Keys over the next few months.

Key West International Airport (EYW), located at the very southwestern tip of this stretch of islands, is currently undergoing a major concourse expansion, which the Florida Keys and Key West Tourism Board says is expected to be completed in the summer of 2025.

Airlines including JetBlue, American Airlines, Delta, and United will be increasing and expanding their offerings of flights to this airport throughout November and December from U.S. cities, including Washington D.C., Boston, Chicago, New York City, and Newark.

With so many flights from so many different airports, you should still be able to secure a relatively affordable airfare if you book at the right time.

Development Of Accommodations

Despite its relatively small size, there’s no shortage of accommodation in the 125-mile-long Florida Keys, many of which have recently been expanded or developed to welcome a new wave of visitors this winter.

Some of the highlights, according to a recent report, include Flamingo Lodge in the Everglades National Park, Casa Morada Resort in Islamorada, Sun Outdoors Sugarloaf Key in the Lower Keys, and Casa Marina Key West, Curio Collection by Hilton, which has just undergone a significant renovation.

While it’s not known as the cheapest region to stay, the sheer number of resorts means that you can at least shop around a little.

Ample Attractions

Even though it seems like a place with a slower pace of life, there is no shortage of attractions and things to do in the Keys.

The tourism board recommends the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum in Key West, Crane Point Museum & Nature Trails in Marathon, and the Key West Lighthouse and Keeper’s Quarters Museum, which recently reopened after restoration work.

That’s before you even mention the fishing, the watersports, the wildlife spotting opportunities, and the State Parks.

Relaxation Is Part Of Life

If you’re not into hitting attractions every day, then the Florida Keys is pretty much the perfect place to simply exist, enjoying the warm winter days and amazing sunsets and sunrises.

This part of the world is the ideal place to give yourself some time to reset.

Temperatures in the Keys average in the mid-70s for most of the winter, and it is also the season where there is hardly any rain. Sounds like heaven to me…

No Jet Lag (For Most Of Us)

The Keys is within reasonable flying time for a huge chunk of the U.S. population, and its eastern time zone location means that jet lag isn’t really an issue for most people who venture out there.

When you think of the winter sun, you may imagine having to trudge halfway across the world or to the opposite hemisphere, but that’s simply not the case here.

You can enjoy a near-perfect climate close enough to realistically fly there even just for a long weekend.

Embrace Your Nautical Side

A brand-new Key West marina has just opened this fall, called Happy Landings.

This marina is open to 75 vessels and has a 24-hour access dock – if you have a boat yourself, or if you simply like to go and gaze at them and dream about owning one, this could be the perfect place for you.

Unique Beaches

For those coming to Gibraltar looking for a beach holiday, you are in luck. Many head to Catalan Bay, tucked into the eastern side of the Rock, or Eastern Beach, Gibraltar’s largest beach, which is located adjacent to the airstrip.

Shopping, Eating, and Drinking

Thanks in part to its unique blend of cultures, Gibraltar has a pretty impressive food scene.

Classic British pubs sit in the numerous squares in town, offering a pint and some fish and chips while watching the football, or head to the endless taps restaurants to get your Spanish fix. Pizza places, French bistros, American sports bars, African-influenced restaurants, and everything else abound here as well.

For those that are here to shop, Gibraltar is a duty-free British Colony, and therefore, goods are cheaper here than other places in Europe. Many shops line the streets, from home brand stores to unique places for special gifts.

Location, Location, Location

Gibraltar lies at a very unique location, which is why it’s such a cultural melting pot nowadays. Sitting on a narrow peninsula of the southern Mediterranean coast of Spain, getting here is part of the fun.

As mentioned, the airport in itself is one of a kind, but those coming from mainland Spain can simply cross the border at La Línea. Arriving from Portugal can be done via train and bus, connecting at Seville.

7. Sanibel, Florida

If you don’t know, there is more to Florida than the Keys, Orlando, and Miami. However, without a beautiful beach, Florida wouldn’t be the great state it is. Sanibel lives up to that standard by offering an assortment of beaches.

One unique aspect of Sanibel’s beaches is that you can collect a variety of seashells and even find sand dollars. Just ensure no hermit crabs or other creatures live in the shell you’d like to collect.

If you want more wildlife than the critters you can find on the beach, check out J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge. This education center offers visitors the chance to learn about the migration of birds that are threatened or endangered.

6. Fairhope, Alabama

Have you heard of the ‘Julibee’? Well, that is what Fairhope, Alabama, is known for. It is when shrimp, crabs, and flounder abundantly swarm the bay. It’s a Fisherman’s easiest day of work and quite the site to see for tourists.

Another hotspot in Fairhope is the Fairhope Brewing Company. In 2012, they opened with just two beers on tap and now have 14 beers and ciders for guests to try. You can also participate in the brewery’s trivia and live music nights and introduce your taste buds to exotic flavors like a sour ale.

Fall is a great time to visit Fairhope’s weekly farmers market and art walks.

5. Blowing Rock, North Carolina

If you’re wondering how this town got its name, it’s because of its 4,000-foot cliff that stands above a beautiful gorge and lush forest.

This small town is a great place to catch the fall foliage and host several fall festivals throughout the season.

4. Dahlonega, Georgia

Dahlonega was once known for being a literal gold mind. In 1838, the U.S. Branch Mint coined $6 million in gold. While gold mining is no longer a way to become rich, panini for gold is often a practice of many locals and tourists in this town.

One of the town’s biggest fall highlights includes the Gold Rush Days Festival at the end of October, with over 200 arts and crafts exhibitors, a parade, and a gold panning contest. 3. Gatlinburg, Tennessee

Bocas Del Toro, Panama

Panama is quickly moving onto the wishlists of digital nomads and travelers from all over the world, and while many come to see the Canal, most stay and explore the many other highlights that the country offers. One region that is unique and exotic is Bocas Del Toro, set just under the border from Costa Rica.

Antigua, Guatemala

The country of Guatemala is gaining more recognition among the travel community, and locations such as Flores, Lake Atitlán, and Antigua are quickly cementing their places as favorites.

The colonial city of Antigua is a destination that has to be seen to be believed, with the colorful buildings lining the cobblestone streets, all in the shadow of the imposing Acatenango Volcano.

Only about an hour from Guatemala City, Antigua brings you back into the past, although the many Western restaurants and fast food chains can help even the most intrepid fit nomad feel at home. Modern amenities here are easy to find, with nice apartments and high-speed internet in abundance.

Suchitoto, El Salvador

Another highly underrated country in Latin America is El Salvador. Much like Nicaragua and Honduras, if you have seen El Salvador mentioned on mainstream media, it likely was not for a good reason.

The reality is that the recent change in leadership has left the country safe for travelers, so long as they practice safety precautions.

While San Salvador is an obvious choice for digital nomads looking for a big city lifestyle, those who are seeking a more authentic and unique vibe should head to the country’s old capital Suchitoto.

This small and laid-back colonial town is well-preserved and offers some great views and local flavor. While there is not a lot to do here if you are looking for a social scene, it could be a good place to set up shop and kick back for a bit.

The destinations were chosen based on a variety of factors, including the summer weather quality, the number of attractions on offer for the whole family, and the ease of access to nature and outdoor activities.

While some of the locations on the list are ones that are well-known, there are others that are more off the beaten track. Including all six of the regions within the United States, here are 6 destinations that offer a unique getaway for a summer trip.

New England: Conway, New Hampshire
