That’s right; while Boston is a winner in all seasons, fall is a magical time in Beantown. The trees begin to change color, and the air becomes crisp, making for the most picturesque cityscapes in the U.S.

And if Bostonians are one thing — it’s spirited.

The city’s people are extremely proud of their sports culture but also know how to celebrate a season or two. If you visit in the fall, expect to see pumpkins… everywhere!

Decor Done Right

If you’re familiar with Boston, then you’ve heard of Beacon Hill, one of the most charming neighborhoods in the city; think: narrow alleyways, towering brownstones, and decorative stoops.

Each year, residents go above and beyond in a stoop competition in the fall. Last year, the city saw an entire house inspired by the Harry Potter movies, graveyards, and more- it’s really something not to be missed if you’re here.

Another neighborhood that goes above and beyond is the South End. If you take a stroll down any of the side streets in the fall, you’ll feel as though you’ve taken a day trip to Disney!

Hundreds of tourists visit each year to catch a glimpse of the spooky show. One house in particular is known for its politically-themed Halloween decor if you need a good laugh!

If you’re worried about what to do when you visit a new place… don’t be. In a prime location on the East Coast, Boston makes it easy to take an abundance of day trips from the city.

Short, long, overnight: no matter how much time you’re spending here, there’s something for you. Well connected to other U.S. States and MA towns, Boston’s public transportation is pretty easy to navigate for newbies.
- Trips under an hour or so → If you want to keep it short and simple, there’s plenty to see. Take a quick boat trip to Provincetown, venture over to spooky Salem, or hop on the commuter rail to Newburyport, Rockport, or Gloucester.
- Longer day trips → Rent a car and drive through the Berkshires to see some of the best foliage in the country or pop over to New Hampshire for the day. It’s even possible to drive or take a train to Cape Cod, and then sail over to Nantucket or Martha’s Vineyard.
Boston Knows How To Do Oktoberfest

I did say Boston was a spirited city, and the fall really brings this out of people. The entire city celebrates Oktoberfest, almost to the extent Germans do!

This year alone, there are over 5 celebrations around Boston. Breweries decorated, people donning lederhosen and dirndls, oompah bands, and free-flowing beer: you’re sure to have a good time at any one of these!

For a day of family fun, Harvard Square celebrates its legendary Oktoberfest celebration each year with a music parade, sidewalk sales, and an array of food vendors and beer gardens.

Beautiful Hotels

Looking to stay directly in the city? Luckily for you, there are plenty of hotels that also offer some of the best views around Boston. Small boutique options facing tree-lined streets and luxurious towers with rooftop bars: you’re bound to enjoy some good foliage spotting.

Playa San Juan del Sur

Playa Escameca

This beach is the most secluded out of the three listed, but don’t let that stop you from visiting!

The coolest way to see this beach is by booking a horse riding tour. You’ll ride through the beautiful jungle, where you may even spot some howler monkeys!

Making your way out of the jungle you will come upon Playa Escameca, offering an incredible view of the Pacific. If you look across the water, you’ll even be able to catch some views of Costa Rica’s coast.

Affordable & Easy To Get To

One of the best parts about visiting San Juan del Sur is its affordability. If you want to save some serious cash, you can find hostel accommodations for under $15 a night, and you can opt for a private room in a hotel for under $100 a night easily.

Drinks and food are cheap too. You can easily find domestic beers for a few dollars each, and a meal at a decent restaurant shouldn’t run you more than $20 or so.

As for getting there, while it isn’t as easy as a direct flight straight to San Juan del Sur, it is an easy journey. The closest major airport to fly to will be Managua.

Americans will connect either through Houston, Miami, or Fort Lauderdale. Once you land in Managua, you’ll have a 2.5-hour drive to San Juan del Sur. You can get there by bus for just a few dollars, or for a more comfortable journey, you can book a private transfer for about $80 per person.

**One thing travelers should know is that you will be required to pay a $10 USD fee to get into the country. This is a tourist fee and must be paid in cash.**

Friendly & Laid-Back Atmosphere

You can’t help but feel like the wheel of time has slowed when walking the charming streets of San Juan del Sur. The bohemian vibe with colorful buildings and cute shops makes it feel like you are walking through a movie set.

Talking to the locals and other travelers, you’ll get the sense that nobody is ever in a rush, and you can truly unwind and relax during your time here.

All the restaurants you can visit are inviting and it’s totally fine (and expected) to make an evening of your meal.

Incredible Activities

If you get bored in San Juan del Sur something is wrong. There is so much to do here that you could easily stay for a month without ever feeling like you’ve run out of things to do. Best of all, La Santa Maria can help set you up with any tours or activities you want.

Some of our favorite activities included:

Surfing

San Juan del Sur is renowned for having some of the best surfing in the world. We went to Playa Remanzo with Tribu Surf Nicaragua for some private lessons and had the hang of it within the hour (we are newbies).

Horseback Riding

One of the coolest ways to take in a destination is on horseback, and Nicaragua is no exception.

We left La Santa Maria and within 30 minutes we were riding horses through the jungle on our way to Playa Escameca where we were able to watch the sunset over the gorgeous Pacific water.

During our ride, we saw some howler monkeys and even heard them in the distance as we left the area.

Cristo de La Misericordia

Overlooking San Juan del Sur is the Cristo de La Misericordia statue. It sits on top of a hill offering an incredible view of the town below.

You can take a taxi close to the top, or for more of a workout, you can start your walk from the bottom.

We opted for the hard way, and the views at the top were definitely worth the effort. If for no other reason, be sure to visit this spot for a great picture to take home with you!

Sunday Funday

While we didn’t get to experience this during our stay, if you are looking for a party, San Juan del Sur offers one of the best in Central America. Best of all, it is every week!

If you travel to this European country, you will undoubtedly encounter magnificent castles, flourishing nature, and an abundance of culture.

From the 9th century up until the 19th century, Slovakia received numerous attacks, and many of the castles were destroyed.

However, some ancient buildings don’t lay in ruins and still stand firm for visitors to come and admire their strength and beauty.

In addition to seemingly impenetrable castles, Slovakia has a soft side regarding its vast landscape of lush green mountains. For those who like to wander in nature, there are many hiking trails to explore for inexperienced and expert-level hikers.

Winter may not be the season you think of when it comes to visiting U.S. national parks.

Road tripping to a national park is a classic summer pastime, but you might be surprised to learn that winter can actually be a better time to plan your trip, especially for budget travelers.

Why? Winter is the off season at most national parks in the United States, which means that you can enjoy lower prices and fewer crowds.

Many national parks look different (but equally as beautiful) in the winter compared to the more popular summer season. As long as you don’t mind bundling up for the cold weather, you can enjoy a great winter trip to U.S. national parks.

Here are the national parks that are best visited during the winter in order to save money, according to a study from The Manual.

1. Yellowstone National Park

Yellowstone National Park is America’s first national park and one of its most popular. November and December are the best months to visit Yellowstone to save money, with average hotel rates at 50% compared to the peak months of June and July.

Although Yellowstone gets very cold during the winter and some roads become impossible from mid-December to mid-March, a November or early December trip is a great time to visit to save money and still enjoy this iconic national park.

2. Rocky Mountain National Park

Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado is the fourth most-visited national park in the United States. Like Yellowstone, it’s most expensive to visit in June and July.

But hotel rates in nearby Estes Park (the town closest to the national park) fall from $180 per night to $85 per night during the months of November, December, and January.

Winter is a fantastic time to visit Rocky Mountain National Park because of the beautiful snow-capped peaks and landscapes and numerous outdoor recreation options. You can try snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, sledding, and more during the winter.

3. Zion National Park

Summer is a popular time to visit Zion National Park, along with spring and fall. In fact, hotel rates near Zion in the towns of St. George and Hurricane are highest from February through April, while they are 25% to 30% less in December and January.

Winter is a good time to visit Zion because, unlike the previous two parks on this list, the weather is not nearly as cold in December and January (although you’ll still want to bundle up!)

Zion’s rocky red cliffs and peaks are even prettier during the winter when covered by a light dusting of snow, and you can enjoy this park without the usual major crowds.

4. Grand Canyon National Park

Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona is the second most popular national park in the United States. Millions of visitors flock to this national park every year to see the iconic landscapes of the Grand Canyon, which is 277 miles long and 18 miles wide.

The most expensive time to visit this national park is April, May, and June when hotel rates top $200 per night. However, in December and January, you can find hotels nearby for as little as $75 per night and enjoy this popular national park without the crowds.

5. Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Finally, Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a great one to visit in the winter. This national park on the border of Tennessee and North Carolina is the most visited in the world.

Peak season is July through October, but those who visit during the winter months of December and January can find better deals on hotels in nearby Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg.

Being located in the Southern United States, winter in Great Smoky Mountains National Park is not quite as cold as other parts of the country, although it can still be quite chilly.

These Are The 3 Most Popular Destinations In Greece To Visit This Fall

Greece has wrapped up the summer season as Europe’s top destination, surpassing the likes of Spain, France, and even Italy.

It’s clear that tourists are flocking to the country’s idyllic, white-sanded beaches in record numbers.

What many of us couldn’t have predicted, though, is the fact that Greece is continuing to attract a remarkable amount of visitors now that the temperatures have dropped and the beaches that filled our Instagram feeds just a few weeks ago have closed down.

According to the INSETE research body, the Mediterranean country is expecting over 4 million international visitors this month, and there are three destinations that have recorded the largest increase in tourists since last year.

Thessaloniki

This highly influential port city is set to become Greece’s trendiest hotspot this fall, expecting the biggest visitor arrival increase for September – a jump of almost 20% from the same time last year.

With an estimated 315,000 tourists arriving this month, Thessaloniki is about to turn into the country’s liveliest hotspot.

You can expect some of the city’s main attractions (The White Tower of Thessaloniki, Aristotelous Square, The Archeological Museum of Thessaloniki, and the ancient Roman Forum) to be extra busy during weekends, so make sure to plan ahead.

Since Greece is mostly known as a summer destination in the international travel community, the fact that a port city like Thessaloniki can experience such a surge of visitors only once the temperatures cool down might come as a surprise.

However, if you ever get to see the city for yourself, you’ll see why it’s so much more than just another resort town.

For starters, though Thessaloniki lies adjacent to the Aegean Sea, sunbathing in the city is not an option.

Those who spend their summers here need to travel back and forth to nearby beaches if they want to tan or take a swim.

Instead of beaches, the city boasts a long, stunning promenade that borders the sea, offering unparalleled views, especially this time of the year.

Beware though, that nights can get pretty windy, so make sure to bring a jacket with you if you’re a fan of seaside walks.

Moreover, Thessaloniki is famous for its rich cultural scene and lively atmosphere, so once in the city, there’s plenty to do and see without having to go to the beach.

Aside from the more traditional attractions mentioned above, tourists can also enjoy modern exhibitions like the Museum of Illusions (a must-see, in my opinion), the vibrant bar scene, and the many diverse restaurants that offer excellent-quality food at competitive prices.

If you don’t have the time to sit down and eat between sightseeing trips, I recommend getting a bougatsa or gyro to go – Thessaloniki is known for being home to some of the best variations of both.

Shopping enthusiasts will have the time of their lives here. Aside from the numerous shops located near Aristotle Square, they can also find a great outlet center named One Salonica right near the outskirts of the city.

Some of the most popular brands in the world (Nike, Adidas, Calvin Klein, Guess, Lacoste, Levi’s, Tommy Hilfiger, etc.) sell their merchandise here at heavily discounted prices,

Athens

Though the capital comes in at number two in terms of its increase in visitors from last year (15.4%), it’s still drawing in the highest number of tourists in the country.

Over 1.2 million people from more than 45 countries are expected to visit Athens this September.

Between the Parthenon, the Acropolis, the Ancient Agora of Athens, and the many, many museums that proudly display the city’s rich history, you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to filling up your itinerary with cultural landmarks.

Moreover, the city provides all the perks of spending a fun night out in a gorgeous Mediterranean city without all the extra costs of getting around a place like Rome or Milan.

Rhodes

The third spot on the list is held by Rhodes, a famous summer hotspot that continues to draw in more than 437,000 visitors a month even as its beaches start to empty.

The largest of Greece’s Dodecanese islands has apparently recovered from the devastating fires of July, seeing a 7.1% increase in visitors this fall compared to the same time last year.

Home to the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the island holds remarkable cultural value that tourists are able to enjoy all year long.

Its natural beauty, delectable cuisine, and fun year-round events further explain why tourists are still flocking to the Greek island even though peak season is over.

However, some states in the country still raise concerns in terms of safety, giving potential travelers pause before they even get a chance to book their trip.

To help you with that decision, Crimen en Mexico, a website dedicated to crime statistics in Mexico, has compiled a list of the safest (and most dangerous) states in the country.

These are the destinations that came out in the top 5:

5. Aguascalientes

Covering a modest 2168.35 mi² (5,616 km²), Aguascalientes is a lesser-known landlocked state that boasts some of the country’s best vineyards and hot springs.

While not your typical beach hotspot, tourists still come to the area to enjoy the San Marcos Garden, the Ojo Caliente Thermal Springs, and La Isla San Marcos (an entertainment complex located on the island in the middle of the San Marcos Lake).

Aside from its natural and cultural attractions, Aguascalientes is also known for its quiet, relaxing atmosphere – in part due to the low violence rate (6.9 per 100,000 people) in the state.

4. Durango

Though not so much at the forefront of mainstream tourism as some of the following destinations on the list, Durango is the backdrop of Mexico’s most naturally blessed landscapes.

The state is even nicknamed “The Land of Films” since many Hollywood projects have taken place in its diverse terrains.

Moreover, the state’s capital, Victoria de Durango, has a well-known historic center with many well-preserved baroque buildings.

3. Baja California Sur

The state is home to some of Mexico’s biggest, most influential cities, including Saltillo (the capital), Acuña, Monclova, and Piedras Negras.

1. Yucatán

Luckily for tourists looking forward to visiting some of Mexico’s most gorgeous attractions, Yucatán, home to dozens of breathtaking beaches, was deemed remarkably safe.

Though the region did record 44 homicides from August 2022 to July 2023, it still boasts a record-low violence rate of 1.9.

In comparison, the country’s most dangerous state, Colima, recorded 873 homicides in the same timeframe and has a violence rate of 107.1.

If you’re ever in the region, you won’t want to miss out on the capital, Mérida. Known for its vibrant nightlife and rich Mayan heritage, the city has welcomed over 888,000 visitors during the first eight months of 2023 alone.

Chichén Itzá, one of Mexico’s most famous historical attractions, is also located within the state, despite tourists often assuming that the landmark is located in Quintana Roo due to the geographical proximity between the two.

The ancient Mayan city that covers 4 square miles (10 square km) is a sight to behold, so make sure to add it to your itinerary.

While you will still encounter other tourists here in the fall, it’s much less than you would in the summer and before the winter visitors arrive.
