These Are The 30 European Countries Americans Will Need A Travel Pass To Visit

Do your 2024 travel plans include visiting La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona or a gondola ride in Venice? If so, you’re going to have to plan on applying for a travel pass beforehand.

And, no, we’re not talking about the tourist tax to enter Venetian city limits or Spain’s Sustainable Tourist Tax. We’re talking about the ETIAS, which is set to launch in 2024.

Americans (and travelers from other countries like Canada and Great Britain) currently don’t require any special visa or travel pass to enter the Schengen area and other parts of Europe for short-term stays under 90 days.

However, the ETIAS is set to change that.

Here’s what to know if you’re planning a trip to Europe next year as an American or a passport holder from one of the other 59 different visa-exempt countries.

What Is The ETIAS?

ETIAS stands for European Travel Information and Authorisation System. It’s a new system that will require visa-exempt nationals, like Americans, to request and pay for a travel pass before entering certain European countries.

And while that sounds a whole lot like a visa, it’s important to note that it’s not the same thing. Instead, it’s a travel pass, which is technically a visa waiver.

It’s similar to the ESTA some foreign travelers are required to have when visiting the US or Canada’s eTA.

The point? It’s not to make travel harder for Americans. It’s ultimately designed to help the European Commission enhance security and prevent travelers from overstaying their visit.

So, when will these new rules go into effect? The ETIAS was approved in 2016, but its official launch has been delayed numerous times.

Currently, all official websites note that the date is “from 2024,” but they’ve provided no official start date.

If you’re traveling to Europe in 2024, we suggest staying updated with travel news and bookmarking the European Union’s official ETIAS page to periodically check for updates.

Which European Countries Do Americans Need A Pass to Enter?

While there’s still no official start date, officials recently announced the complete list of 30 European countries where Americans and other visa-exempt nationals will need a travel pass to visit once the program launches.

The full list includes the following countries:

- Czech Republic
- Denmark
- Estonia
- Finland
- France
- Germany
- Greece
- Hungary
- Iceland
- Italy
- Latvia
- Liechtenstein

- Romania
- Slovakia
- Slovenia
- Spain

What if you’re planning to take a larger trip throughout several European countries in 2024? You only need one ETIAS.

The ETIAS travel pass is linked to your passport and is valid for three years or until that travel document expires (whichever comes first).

Applying For The ETIAS

Because the ETIAS is not a visa, applying for one is pretty straightforward.

In fact, it’s set to be as simple as applying for the eVisa required for Americans to enter Turkey or the Electronic Travel Authority they have to apply for when visiting Australia.

To get an ETIAS, you’ll fill out an online application. You’ll enter information such as your passport number, place and date of birth, address, email address, and travel information.

You’ll also have to provide information about prior criminal convictions, your current occupation, and information regarding your length and purpose of stay.

Then, you’ll pay the €7 fee and wait for your application to be approved (applicants under 18 and over 70 are exempt from paying this fee!).

It shouldn’t take any longer than four days (although ETIAS.com says 95% of people should be approved within minutes) unless they request further documentation, in which case it could take up to 14 to 30 days.

ETIAS Doesn’t Guarantee Entry

Unfortunately, simply having the ETIAS doesn’t automatically grant you entry to any of the 30 European countries in the list above.

You still have to go through the regular passport control check, where a border control agent will check your passport and any other required documentation.

This could include asking to see travel insurance, requesting proof of sufficient funds during your stay, or even asking to see accommodation reservations.

Ultimately, they have the last say on whether you’re allowed in or not, so check the entry requirements for the country you’re flying into just to be sure.

And finally, stay up to date on ETIAS news. Until it’s officially launched, start planning your European getaway by looking into underrated European cities to visit.

Formerly spelled Turkey, Turkiye is a transcontinental nation mostly located in Asia, though 3.4% of its land area is part of Europe. Known as the gateway to the Middle East, it has been a source of fascination for centuries, but it’s truly reaching a new peak of popularity now.

Istanbul, the country’s largest city, marks the natural boundary between both continents, sitting on both sides of the legendary Bosphorus Strait.

Whether it’s the arid landscape and cave towns of Cappadocia, or the scenic Aegean drive, you will be mesmerized by Turkiye’s sheer natural beauty.

This fall, the resort city of Izmir is the ideal place to be.

The country’s largest Aegean city, it has an enviable portfolio of luxury all-inclusive resorts lining the turquoise seafront, with many nightly rates that are far cheaper compared to Barcelona, Nice, and other European cities in its league.

Turkiye Is Hot This Fall

In case you have forgotten, Turkiye is a Mediterranean country, and Izmir itself boasts long hours of sunshine and hotter temperatures well into autumn, with highs of 84.2 degrees (F) in September and lows of 68.

It stays relatively warm as late as early November, when temperatures average 75.2 degrees during the day, before cooling off in the evenings for a pleasant 60 degrees.

Further down the Mediterranean coast, other popular resort spots include the smaller cities of Bodrum and Marmaris, where tourists can both bask under the scorching sun and marvel at Hellenic ruins that rival Greece’s in beauty.

On the Eastern Mediterranean, Antalya is an absolute leader in holiday bookings, as well as Turkiye’s busiest beach destination, having hosted over 4 million tourists between January 1 and June 10 of this year, according to the Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism.

Antalya is best known for its upscale beachfront hotels and walled Old Town, where several of Turkiye’s most famous Roman-era landmarks are concentrated, including the iconic Hadrian’s Gate and beautiful municipal beaches.

It is Turkiye’s hottest beach destination this fall, with temperatures soaring above 84 degrees and with waters that are warm enough for swimming, which may not be the case on the Northern Aegean later in the year.

Turkiye Is Incredibly Cheap

Other than its beautiful weather, Turkiye is incredibly cheap by Western standards.

This year, Bodrum has ranked as the third cheapest summer destination in all of Eurasia, with meals in non-expensive restaurants averaging a nearly negligible $5, and hotel rates standing at $88.

According to Numbeo, restaurant prices in Antalya are up to 62.2% cheaper than Barcelona, while consumer prices can be 61.7% lower than Nice’s.

This means you should expect to pay, on average, $5.08 for a meal at a cheap eatery in the trendy Konyaalti district of Antalya, and only $22.16 for a three-course meal in a mid-range restaurant. For comparison, a cheap meal in Nice costs roughly $20.74.

It’s no surprise holiday bookings for Turkiye are skyrocketing, as reported by British travel company On the Beach.

Britain is one of Turkiye’s most valuable markets, up there with Germany and the United States, and as many as 1.2 million seats on flights originating from the U.K. have been added this year.

In July alone, as many as 73,000 British holidaymakers flew to Turkiye, with Antalya consistently ranking as the most popular coastal destination for On the Beach customers.

Southern Spain and France’s Cote d’Azur may be Europe’s most sought-after fall destinations, as they are both Mediterranean regions enjoying long, hot summers, and balmy autumns, but despite their undeniable charm, they don’t stand a chance against Turkiye – especially now that new nonstop flights to Istanbul have launched.

While the sprawling city of over 750,000 residents is by no means the cheapest in the country, it’s arguably the best in terms of the overall value it offers to travelers.

Here’s what you can expect to enjoy in Krakow:

Fascinating History

Krakow is famously one of the oldest cities in Poland, dating back to the 7th century.

Moreover, the area’s main historical landmarks are remarkably well-preserved. The city’s historical value lies mainly in its medieval core and Jewish quarters.

Krakow’s list of must-sees includes the old town that’s still full of remnants of medieval walls, the Wawel Castle, St. Mary’s Basilica, the Wieliczka salt mines, and the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum.

The latter, while not directly in Krakow, is one of the most significant historical landmarks in the area and it’s only an hour’s drive away from the city center.

The old town and Wieliczka salt mines are even part of UNESCO’s world heritage list, so if you’re ever in the city, make sure to move them right to the top of your itinerary.

Excellent Service

Don’t let the city’s reasonable prices fool you into thinking that you’ll be getting sub-par goods and services. The people here are friendly, and the food is excellent.

Speaking of food, while there are some big chains in Krakow you might be more familiar with (i.e., McDonald’s, Burger King, KFC), I can’t recommend prioritizing local cuisine enough.

Kaczka po krakowsku (a flaky dessert filled with cream), Kremówka paprika (a duck and mushroom dish), Plac Nowy zapiekanka (a toasted and stuffed baguette), and Obwarzanek krakowski (the traditional Polish Bagel) are all must-tries.

Most bars and restaurants, especially those located in touristy areas, boast a long history and evident experience with tourists from all over the world, so communication shouldn’t be an issue.

As far as safety goes, Poland, in general, is considered a safe country, even being named one of the best European countries for solo female travelers.

Vibrant Nightlife

The Polish take their nightlife seriously, and the people of Krakow are no exception.

The city is filled to the brim with clubs, bars, and pubs that stay open until the early hours of the morning.

Seeing as a shot of vodka will only set you back $1.2-$5 (5-20 zł), be sure to have a taxi or designated driver on standby that can take you back to your hotel safely at the end of the night.

This isn’t to say that those who aren’t into the whole nightclub scene can’t enjoy a quiet trip here.

There are plenty of peaceful, family-friendly neighborhoods in the city, so whether you’re looking for a quiet fall vacation or a fun getaway to blow off some steam, Krakow has something to offer to everyone.

A Return To Safety

Sri Lanka has experienced a host of widely reported economic and political difficulties in the last couple of years.

First there were the 2019 Easter bombings. Then Covid hit. Then just as there was light at the end of the tunnel, in 2022 the Sri Lankan economy collapsed.

These issues meant that there were shortages of fuel and cooking gas, as well as some medicines and essential food items. This led to widespread political unrest in the country.

When these problems were at their peak the U.S. State Department issued a level 3 travel advisory recommending that American citizens reconsider travel to Sri Lanka.

But this level has dropped to Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution. This means that Sri Lanka is considered to be a safe country to visit right now.

There are still shortages of imported goods and fuel in the country, but fuel rationing has helped to ease the situation and this has very little impact on tourists.

Even when there are frequent power outages most tourist facilities have backup generators so that you won’t really notice the impact.

If you need specific medicines, then you are advised to travel with these as there are still some medical shortages in Sri Lanka.

But in general, tourists in Sri Lanka can still feel safe and secure.

Climate Considerations

Sri Lanka is a year-round destination for wildlife watchers and nature tourism.

The country is uniquely placed so that it experiences two monsoon seasons, meaning when one half of the country is getting a soaking, the other is dry, and vice versa.

But the best time for exploring the whole country is considered to be the shoulder season of September and October. This period offers the best weather right across the country, plus prices are lower and crowd levels are lower too.

For nature lovers, September sees 200-plus elephants gather in one spot in Minneriya National Park. Known as ‘the gathering,’ this event can last for several weeks and is an incredible thing to see.

It is referred to as one of Asia’s greatest wildlife spectacles.

Here are some of the top U.S. destinations for travelers this fall, based on affordable airfare, hotels, and rental cars.

1. Orlando, Florida

Orlando remains one of the most popular destinations in the United States, and it’s not hard to see why.

The infamous ‘pickpockets’ roam the canal city targeting newcomers who are not yet familiar with local safety measures.

Recently, Italy was named the absolute worst for pickpocketing in Europe, and a majority of occurrences seem to be centered in the tourist hotspots of Rome, Milan, Florence, and of course, Venice, as it is one of the country’s leading destinations.

There Is A Ticketing System Coming

Venice is so fed up with tourists that it now wants to introduce a ticketing system set to affect all American, British, and European passport holders visiting the lagoon and its many islands.

In other words, you will need to buy a ticket to enter the city, which only adds to the cost of visiting, as tourists are already subject to a visitor tax, and a ban on day trips when traveling as cruise passengers. Though the measure is yet to be implemented, it has already been confirmed.

Once implemented, tickets will be issued as QR codes to be checked upon entry at one of the city’s to-be-designated entry points. As you can see, this is a destination that has made it clear tourists should reconsider visiting unless they are willing to stay longer and pay up.

Venice Is Mad Expensive

On the topic of affordability, Venice is probably one of the most expensive cities for tourists not only in Italy but all of Southern Europe.

According to the popular crowd-sourced database Budget Your Trip, a peak-season trip to Venice will cost on average $253 per day, with tourists expected to spend on average $71 for meals per day at mid-range restaurants and around $30 on public transportation.

Additionally, hotel prices for two individuals average $265 per night, increasing the cost of a week-long sejour in Venice to roughly $3,542.

Unless you’re saving up by not eating out most nights, staying in a shared room in a hostel, and skipping museums, a Venice vacay surely has the potential to break the bank if you’re a budget traveler.

Venice Risks Becoming A World Heritage Site In Danger

Finally, UNESCO has recommended adding Venice to its list of World Heritage Sites in danger, largely due to overtourism concerns and the city’s failed attempts at adapting to the climate crisis.

As you should know by now, Venice is built on a complex ecosystem of islands scattered around a shallow lagoon, and it often sees either flooding or disruptive droughts depending on the season that often leave its picturesque canals drained for days on end.

These disturbances continuously threaten to damage the city’s architectural treasures, not to mention the scale of tourism it experiences, which contributes to more littering, the degradation of public spaces, and overall deterioration as a result of human interference.

UNESCO now believes Venice, one of our civilization’s greatest feats, faces ‘irreversible damage’, and proposes it is added to the organization’s in-danger listing from September. This means tourists should expect heightened surveillance and even more restrictive measures to curb visitation.

All in all, it’s not the best time to pay the Queen of the Adriatic a visit, but there are always lesser-known alternatives in Northern Italy that receive far fewer tourists and are just as charming and rich in History as Venice is.
