Located in the heart of the country, Guadalajara is the second-largest city in Mexico and offers visitors a unique blend of history, art, and modern attractions.

1. Culture

Guadalajara is often considered the cultural center of Mexico due to its rich history and artistic heritage.

The city is home to several world-class museums, including the Regional Museum of Anthropology and History and the Instituto Cultural Cabañas.

Visitors can immerse themselves in Mexican art, music, and dance at the many festivals and events held throughout the year, such as the Guadalajara International Film Festival.

Being the home of tequila and mariachi, there are, of course, festivals dedicated to those as well. The Tequila Festival and the International Mariachi and Charrería Festival take place in March and September, respectively.

While tequila and mariachi need no introduction, charrería, Mexico’s national sport, is most commonly compared to a rodeo and something not to miss on a trip to Guadalajara.

2. Cuisine

Mexican cuisine is known for its bold flavors, and each state has its own unique dishes.

Guadalajara is famous for its birria — a spicy meat stew (usually goat) that is typically served with tortillas and lime wedges.

Another local specialty is the torta ahogada, or “drowned sandwich.” This is exactly what it sounds like – a fried pork sandwich smothered in a spicy tomato sauce and served with avocado, onions, and radish.

Some other dishes to look out for are pozole and chilaquiles. Visitors can sample these dishes and more at the city’s many street vendors, markets, and restaurants.

3. History

Guadalajara is home to some of Mexico’s most stunning architecture, with buildings that date back to the 16^th century.

The historic center of Guadalajara, or Centro Historico, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and features beautiful colonial-era buildings, such as the Government Palace and the Guadalajara Cathedral.

The cathedral is almost as old as the city itself and includes Gothic, baroque, and neoclassical influences.

Visitors can also explore the neighborhood of Tlaquepaque, known for its colorful buildings and traditional crafts, or venture an hour outside of the city to view the ancient Guachimontones Pyramids.

4. Entertainment

Guadalajara has a vibrant nightlife scene with a variety of bars, nightclubs, and live music venues.

Visit the Tlaquepaque neighborhood for mariachi or head to the popular Chapultepec neighborhood for more trendy hotspots.

The city is also home to the most LGBTQ bars and nightclubs in Mexico and is known for hosting Latin America’s largest gay pride parade.

If nightclubs aren’t your thing, there are plenty of other attractions, as Guadalajara has a thriving shopping and sports scene.

For shopping, you’ll find everything from local artisan markets to large urban malls.

Sports lovers should check out a charreada (rodeo) or head to the Arena Coliseo for an incredibly entertaining lucha libre performance (wrestling).

5. Day Trips

Guadalajara’s location makes it an ideal base for exploring nearby attractions.

One of the most popular day trips from Guadalajara is to the town of Tequila to visit the sprawling agave fields and learn about tequila production.

These blue agave fields, which are yet another UNESCO World Heritage Site, are the source of all the tequila in the world.

Travelers can visit the National Museum of Tequila, tour distilleries, and visit the original tequila factory, the Hacienda Herradura San Jose Refugio.

There is even a train, aptly named the Jose Cuervo Express, to take you from Guadalajara to Tequila.

Another nearby option for either a day trip or a relaxing weekend is Lake Chapala.

An hour’s drive takes visitors to this freshwater lake where they can bird-watch, enjoy the calm surroundings, or hire a boat to go island-hopping.

The area is so tranquil that it has brought in quite a few retirees and expats over the years and is currently home to many Americans and Canadians.

This Is What It’s Like To Visit Machu Picchu Right Now

Visiting Machu Picchu is a bucket list experience for many travelers.

This ancient Incan citadel built in the 15th century is the most-visited destination in Peru, and for good reasons. It’s incredibly well-preserved, and its dramatic location surrounded by mist-shrouded mountains makes for an unforgettable experience.

But Machu Picchu made headlines earlier this year after the famous site was closed indefinitely due to ongoing protests and civil unrest in the region.

After closing on January 21, Machu Picchu reopened on February 15 – a closure of just over three weeks.

However, understandably, many travelers were apprehensive about visiting shortly after Machu Picchu’s reopening, concerned about lingering unrest that may impact their trips.

I just visited Machu Picchu in mid-March, just one month after the site reopened.

Here’s what travelers need to know about visiting Machu Picchu right now:

Tourism In Cusco Is Back To Normal

If you are worried about visiting Machu Picchu right now, there’s no need to be concerned. As of mid-March, tourism operations are entirely back to normal.

Cusco, the tourism epicenter of the Sacred Valley and the jumping-off point for visiting Machu Picchu, is fully back to normal, with hotels, restaurants, and tour agencies open and operating as usual.

If you wish to complete the Inca Trail trek or another trek to reach Machu Picchu, tour companies are running treks as usual, but you may encounter smaller group sizes if you travel within the next couple of months since many people have canceled or postponed their trips.

If you’re like me and prefer to take the train to Machu Picchu, it is also running as usual again. The train to Aguas Calientes (the town just outside Machu Picchu) was closed by the Peruvian government due to damage on the tracks caused by protestors in December.

However, service has now been restored on this route. Just note that the full route from Cusco to Aguas Calientes is not running – only the service from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes.

What Is It Like At Machu Picchu Right Now?

In mid-March, when I visited, Machu Picchu was not too crowded.

This could be due to both the lower crowds caused by many people canceling and rescheduling their trips and the fact that March is always the off-season for Machu Picchu.

During the high season for Machu Picchu, which occurs from June until September, crowds can be very heavy, and that is likely to hold true for 2023 as people who may have postponed their trips earlier in the year reschedule for later in the year.

When I visited Machu Picchu this month, it was also very rainy, cloudy, and misty. This is typical because March is still part of the rainy season in Peru.

If you want a better chance of clear weather, it’s a good idea to visit Machu Picchu in the dry season from May until September.

What About The Rest Of Peru?

In addition to visiting Machu Picchu, I spent several weeks traveling through Peru in March. The northern part of the country (where the capital Lima is located) is completely safe, and most of the protests and civil unrest of the past few months were limited to the southern part of the country.

In the south, Cusco is completely back to normal. However, I would not recommend traveling the route from Cusco to Puno, a southern Peruvian city on the shores of Lake Titicaca.

I experienced a blockade in the middle of the night traveling this route by bus, so if you are visiting Peru soon, I would not plan on making Puno or Lake Titicaca part of your itinerary just yet.

However, the rest of the country is perfectly fine.

If you were on the fence about planning a trip to Peru this year due to the current situation, you can rest assured knowing that travel in Peru is mostly back to normal, and this beautiful country is waiting for you.

Majorca (Mallorca), Spain

Another Mediterranean hotspot is Majorca.

This Balearic island is home to fantastic wineries and pretty cool town centers.

It’s different from its sister islands, Ibiza, Formentera, and Menorca, in that it’s more relaxed and wide enough for people to live there. The best time to visit is in the summer.

The coast is fantastic here, but it has some of the cutest mountain villages that give you the best views on the island.

Comino, Malta

Unlike Majorca, very few people live in Comino, but it’s a prime summer spot if you’re in the area. It’s a tiny island between Gozo and mainland Malta, and you can get there by a short ferry ride.

What shines here is the Blue Lagoon. It’s on a cove protected by Comino and another small island called Cominotto.

Light blue water covers this entire area, and it’s perfect for enjoying water sports like kayaking, sailing, and other forms. It’s worth a visit, for sure.

Procida, Italy

Procida is a Flegrean Island off the coast of Naples and has the most exciting island town. This island won Italy’s Capital of Culture in 2022, and famous films like The Talented Mr. Ripley were filmed here.

Walking through Marina Grande will amaze you with its multi-colored buildings and gastronomic options.

This island also sports beautiful volcanic beaches like Chiaiolella, where you can find interesting rock formations. Overall, this is one place you should check out soon.

Tenerife, Spain

Next door to Africa, you’ll find the Canary Islands, and Tenerife is one you should visit.

Known for having the best stargazing in the area, Tenerife is home to places like Michelin-star restaurants and Europe’s most extensive lava tube.

It’s also known as a fantastic scuba diving spot because its waters stay at a moderate temperature year-round. Even better, the weather on this island stays pretty warm year-round, making it a seasonless destination.

Capri, Italy

Known as a playground for the rich and famous, Capri is becoming a modern traveler’s favorite destination.

Places like the Blue Grotto are becoming increasingly prominent, and it’s becoming an alternative to places like the Amalfi Coast, which can become overcrowded during summer months.

Hvar, Croatia

Hvar is an island near Croatia with some of the best port views on this side of Europe.

It shares the Adriatic Sea with Italy, which contains the most crystal blue waters you can’t find anywhere else. This destination is excellent because you see a different side of Europe.

Only some spots are like Italy or Spain; this Croatian island is a perfect place to explore this country in the Balkans.

U.S. National Parks have been getting some much-deserved attention in recent years, partly thanks to them providing some safe respite from travel bans and lockdowns during the pandemic.

Thanks to this and to a post-pandemic boom, we are learning more and more about the many sites that make up America’s National Park system, and with that comes new opportunities to explore some of the lesser-known places.

With around 424 National Parks in total, Americans (and visitors from around the globe) are spoiled for choice when it comes to deciding which one(s) to visit.

While some of them are hugely popular, there are many that do not report a lot of traffic.

Due to being off the beaten path, or too remote, or possibly just not well known about, these National Parks can be your secret paradise this year.

While there are many ‘low attendance’ parks in Alaska and offshore, such as Samoa and The Virgin Islands, let’s look at the ones in the continental U.S. that are more easily accessible for a visit.

The Least Visited National Parks Within The Continental U.S. Are:

Isle Royale National Park, Michigan

With just over 25 thousand visitors in 2022, this national park located in Lake Superior offers those who visit some seriously peaceful exploring.

This rugged archipelago is reachable by seaplane or a few ferry services from the mainland.

Open from mid-April to the end of October, this national park is comprised of over 400 islands, though the main one, Isle Royale, is likely where you will spend most of your time.

With a low visitation rate, 165 trails, and 36 campgrounds, Isle Royale National Park never seems to feel busy, even during the peak months.

North Cascades National Park, Washington

Despite being only three hours away from Seattle, North Cascades National Park doesn’t see a huge number of visitors.

In 2022 it only welcomed around 20 thousand people into its gates, and those who made the trip were rewarded with stunning vistas, amazing hiking, and wildlife in abundance across its nearly 700 thousand acres.

You can go deep off road or stay closer to the trails, and those who are not into hiking can enjoy some seriously scenic drives as well.

The park itself is open year-round, but the conditions are completely up to the elements. So while a winter visit is possible, make sure to stay on top of weather and road information.

Voyageurs National Park, Minnesota

Located in northern Minnesota and sharing a border with Canada, this National Park offers you the chance to see the northern lights if you are lucky.

Voyageurs National Park is connected by four large lakes and numerous smaller ones, and 84,000 of its 218,055 acres are made up of water.

As you can imagine, boating is a big pastime here, although personal watercraft are not allowed, meaning the silence of the area can better be maintained.

Swimming is a nice way to cool off after some strenuous hikes, and of course, summer is the best time for that.

This National Park is open year-round and has no entrance fee (unless camping overnight), and autumn is considered the best time to visit for peak foliage times.

In the winter, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and sledding are all favorite pastimes.

Dry Tortugas National Park, Florida

As one of the many underrated places to visit in Florida, this stunning National Park is quite unique. Home to the impressive Fort Jefferson, Dry Tortugas National Park is comprised of many small islands, although most of its 100 square miles are made up of turquoise blue open water.

As this National Park is only reachable by boat or seaplane, it’s not too surprising that it doesn’t report a very high attendance. In fact, in 2022, only 78,488 visitors were recorded.

So if you are looking to tick another National Park off your checklist and you are interested in coral, bird, and marine life, then this one is for you.

Open year-round and only a little over two hours on a ferry from Key West, Dry Tortugas National Park is doable on a day trip, although an overnight offers more time to experience this special place.

Congaree National Park, South Carolina

What do 204,522 people have in common? They all visited the lesser-known Congaree National Park in 2022.

Found in central South Carolina, only 18 miles from the state capital of Columbia, this park keeps intact the largest old-growth bottomland hardwood forest in the United States.

With the waters of the Congaree and the Wateree rivers meeting here, most of this park becomes a flood plane filled with biodiversity and life.

The trees growing here are some of the tallest in the eastern U.S. and combine to make one of the highest temperate deciduous forest canopies in the world.

Easily explored in one or two days, and open year-round, this park makes the perfect weekend trip for those looking to get into nature but don’t want to use their whole vacation to do so.

Great Basin National Park, Nevada

From the summit of Wheeler Peak to the depths of the Lehman caves and everything in between, there is something for everyone at Great Basin National Park.

Located In east-central Nevada, near the border of Utah, this park is very remote and covers around 77,000 acres of land.

The park’s rolling foothills, basins, and mountain ranges are all nestled between the Rocky Mountains and the Sierra Nevada mountains, making this area quite rugged.

Visited by only a little over 142 thousand people last year, you are likely to have these hot desert valleys, cool caves, and mountain peaks nearly to yourself.

Just remember to make all the required plans and take the necessary safety precautions out in this wild terrain.

Pinnacles National Park, California

Formed from volcanoes that erupted around 23 million years ago, Pinnacles National Park is now a unique landscape of rock formations, caves, and woodlands.

This park offers ample hiking opportunities, from easy-going family hikes to hardcore climbing.

Providing a chance for northern Californians to escape the city and get out into the natural landscape, this park is better enjoyed in the cooler months.

Although it’s one of the 15 least visited parks in the country, it can (and often does) get busy on weekends, so it’s best to plan a trip accordingly.

In 2022 Pinnacles National Park saw about 275 thousand visitors, and many say about two days is enough to really take in the beauty of this unique California landscape.

Guadalupe Mountains National Park, Texas

Where can you see the world’s largest Permian fossil reed, historic sites, various different ecosystems, as well as Texas’s four highest points all in one?

This would be the lesser-known United States National Park, Guadalupe Mountains National Park.

While only visited by around 220 thousand people last year, this park offers over 80 miles of trails to hike and take in the beauty amongst some peace and quiet.

One special experience here is to hike the Salt Basin Dunes that reach up over 100 feet from the floor of the desert.

This west Texas hidden secret is best reached from El Paso, although Carlsbad, New Mexico is also under an hour away.

Summer months here get HOT, and hiking in this wilderness is not recommended.

The best times to visit Guadalupe are winter and spring to really be able to take in the vast and varied landscape of this area.

Near Fort Bragg, this place is a TikTok and Instagram lovers’ dream. It’s a stone beach with different colored sea glass.

There is so much sea glass here because, back in the 1900s, this used to be a significant trash dumping site. The ocean has rounded out all the glass and brought it back to shore.

Madrid

We can’t start this list without discussing the capital first. Madrid is home to some of Spain’s most famous museums and history. It’s technically the most visited city in Spain, and for a good reason.

The town is renowned for maintaining its historic art deco/expressionist and baroque architecture while supplementing its infrastructure to keep up with modern times. The food is on another level. Some of Spain’s most famous restaurants are in the city, like DiverXO, which has three Michelin stars.

Prices for apartments are moderate, and you can easily live comfortably if you’re making a North American salary. The city is also famous for its eclectic neighborhoods like the LGBTQ+ hotspot, Chueca.

There’s something for everyone in this town, and it should be on your radar.

Barcelona

Another that we need to include in this list is Barcelona. Known as Catalonia’s capital, Barcelona is Spain’s second most visited city. This city doesn’t pale in comparison to Madrid.

There’s so much diversity here that it’s almost too difficult to compare. Barcelona is home to the ever-evolving Basílica de la Sagrada Família and Park Güell by famed architect and Catalan artist (Antoni Gaudí).

Outside of its art-centered attractions, Barcelona has some pretty cool neighborhoods. Gràcia and El Poblenou are hip spots in town with cute cafes, incredible food, and an active social scene. Pro tip: learn some Catalan if you plan on living here; the city is the capital of Catalonia, and knowing a few words can help you during your stay.

Valencia

Valencia is a fantastic city that may be smaller than Madrid or Barcelona, but it makes up for it in terms of style and design. The city is known for being the homeplace of the famous Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, and you can see some of his celebrated works throughout the city.

If you’ve ever been to Spain, you’ve probably had paella, but if you’re in Valencia, you really have to try it there. The dish was created here somewhere between the 10th and 15th centuries.

Sevilla (Seville)

Another Spanish past-time that is globally famous is flamenco. If you’re in Sevilla, you must see a show here since this city is its birthplace. Sevilla is also the capital of Andalusia. The city’s architecture is interesting since the Moors (Muslim inhabitants) occupied the town for 500 years during the medieval ages.

Many of the buildings carry an arabesque quality to them, and some of the cultures are linked directly to Arabic or Muslim bases. The weather here is warmer and drier than in the rest of Spain.

Cádiz

If you’re a sherry fan, you have to check out Cádiz. Known for being the oldest standing city in Europe, Cádiz is a history-buffs paradise and another city in Andalucia. You’ll notice direct similarities between colonial towns in the Caribbean and Latin America and this city.

Many ships that went to discover the new world had a port here. Back to the wine, the sherry triangle is located here in Cádiz, and it’s full of sherry and brandy bodegas (wineries).

Donostia-San Sebastian

Donostia-San Sebastian is located in the Basque country, like a clean golden-laced New York. It’s an adequately built-out city with some of the most superb beaches you can find in Spain. It gets a little chilly and rainy here most of the time, but when the weather is right, you can find some of the best tanning spots on La Concha beach.

Compared to cities like Madrid and Barcelona, a one-bedroom can be as low as $950. Depending on your income level, this can be a steal.

Palma (Mallorca)

Known as the biggest Balearic island (its sisters being Ibiza, Menorca, and Formentera), Palma (Mallorca) is an excellent option for digital nomads. It’s relatively warm year-round, not too expensive, and they have great beaches. We don’t know about you, but we crave beaches and sunny weather when winter rolls around. The city is an excellent option for those who like island life but with structure. It’s the biggest of the Balearic Islands and has a ton of history.

If you want to make a global move this year, you have to check out Spain. Its new programs make crossing the pond easier, but it also has some fascinating cities that can improve your lifestyle.
