In a way, Carmel is a Californian Capital for the Arts, as the town has spawned a number of poets, such as writer and actor Perry Newberry and renowned writer Jack London, and at one point, it even had a living legend himself, actor-director Clinton Eastwood serve as mayor.

Solvang

The third and final entry on our list is Solvang, the unofficial ‘Danish Capital of America‘.

Though its origins can be traced back to 1804, upon the Spanish colonization of the West Coast, it fell into abandonment until a group of Danes purchased and resettled the land in 1911.

Unsurprisingly, they rebuilt the town in the likeness of their homeland, with construction continuing well into the 1950s.

Today, the six thousand-people-strong town is an extension of Denmark on the West Coast, with its Scandi-inspired Tivoli Square, Lutheran churches, and landmark windmill.

Tulum has long been a popular destination in Mexico, and it will be easier than ever to visit this Mexican Caribbean beach paradise with the recent opening of a brand-new airport.

But another underrated destination nearby is poised to become the trendiest new hotspot in Mexico in 2024.

The beach town of Akumal is just 25 minutes from Tulum and has been growing in popularity.

Here’s why it’s set to become even more popular with travelers in 2024:

New Flights Make It Easier Than Ever To Visit

Akumal, a stunning destination on the Riviera Maya, is less than half an hour away from Tulum’s new international airport, which opened on December 1st.

Several airlines have already announced new flights to Tulum from 10 U.S. cities, with new cities being added frequently.

Once the airport officially opens, it’s likely that airlines will continue expanding their presence in Tulum with even more new routes.

This makes it easier than ever to visit Akumal.

Previously, travelers had to fly into Cancun, the largest and busiest airport in Mexico. From Cancun, it’s about 1.5 hours to Akumal.

But now, travelers can fly directly to Tulum and make to easy 25-minute journey to Akumal, significantly cutting down on travel time and hassle.

It’s Cheaper Than Tulum

A huge reason that Akumal will become a top destination in 2024 is because it’s more affordable than the increasingly expensive Tulum.

While Tulum can be a great destination, its ridiculously high prices are causing its popularity to wane as travelers seek out more budget-friendly alternatives.

In Tulum, it’s possible to spend $25 on a five-minute taxi ride or up to $1,000 per night for a hotel room (that may be less than impressive.) But in Akumal, you can get a much better value for your money.

A Destination For Natural Beauty

One of the biggest draws of Akumal is that it’s a great destination for experiencing the natural beauty of the Riviera Maya and the surrounding areas.

Tulum has become highly developed and commercialized, but Akumal is much more natural. It’s known for being a haven for scuba divers and snorkelers.

Some of the best things to do in Akumal include swimming with turtles, exploring the tranquil Yal-kú Lagoon, or visiting Kantun-Chi Ecopark.

The beaches in Akumal are among the most beautiful and pristine in the Mexican Caribbean, and fortunately, they receive far less sargassum seaweed than the beaches of Tulum to the south.

2023 marked the first full year of restriction-less travel since the health crisis subsided.

All of sudden, border curbs were lifted, discriminatory measures axed, and normality reinstated – across much of the globe – leading to an unsurprising surge in holiday bookings.

It’s not surprising, then, that this set of three iconic sunny countries is about to become even trendier to travel to in 2024:

Greece

According to the latest report issued by ForwardKeys, on the tracking of travel trends for ’24, Greece is one of three countries travelers are most likely to visit over the course of the following year.

This year, Greece exploded in popularity as Europe loosened travel restrictions, and renowned interest in cultural expeditions brought its ancient heritage to the front once more.

The birthplace of democracy and the cradle of Western civilization, Greece has a plethora of manmade wonders:

When visiting the Hellenic Republic, tourists are sure to pay to the Athenian Acropolis Hill a visit, as it concentrates a number of structures that have helped shape Greek nationhood, such as the Parthenon, the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, and the Temple of Athena Nike.

The second-most visited country in the Caribbean region, the Dominican Republic (DR) is another top performer for 2024, boasting year-round warm temperatures, state-of-the-art resorts, and an inestimable cultural wealth.

It is the home of Punta Cana, a major resort destination straddling the Caribbean shoreline, and a seasonal favorite for Americans looking to kick back, enjoy however many hours of winter sun they can get, and enjoy the award-winning service.

Other popular destinations in the DR, which occupies the eastern portion of the historic island of Hispaniola, include La Romana, an up-and-coming beach getaway where soft, golden sands are lined by tall palm trees, and Puerto Plata, a laid-back port city with a picturesque colonial core.

Though it’s been historically overlooked by visitors, who are mostly flocking into the DR for beach and relaxation, the national capital Santo Domingo has experienced an uptick in visitors as of late, due to the popularization of ‘colonial tourism’.

This category of travel commonly involves visiting cities that were established, or re-settled by Europeans, either for the History, or merely for sightseeing, and not only is Santo Domigno filled with Spanish-era landmarks, but it is also the oldest European-built settlement in the Americas.

Old Town Santo Domingo is characterized by its 16th-century walls and castle, colonial mansions, and charming streets lined by colorful civic buildings.

Soon enough, tourists will be able to travel from Punta Cana to the DR’s historic capital by train.

Mexico

Number one on the list, Mexico is currently the world’s trendiest tourist destination, with a whopping 66 million passengers landing or transiting via Mexican airports in 2022 alone.

Further growth is expected in 2023, already a record-breaking year for Mexican tourism, and next year will be no different.

Mexico’s greatest strength is its unequivocally diverse offer.

From resort-packed coastal zones, such as the Mayan Riviera, which lays claim to Cancun, Tulum, Playa Del Carmen, and many more trendy Caribbean cities, to the breathtaking nature of the Pacific states and every stunning colonial state capital in between, Mexico appeals to everyone.

The Cancun Hotel Zone is easily the country’s leading attraction, with its mega-resorts that line the Caribbean Sea, amazing infrastructure, and world-renowned hospitality, though lesser-known spots like Merida in the wider Yucatan Peninsula and Lake Bacalar have also risen in prominence lately.

This winter, Mexico is launching its very first long-distance tourist train in Yucatan, linking as many as five states that are either fully in, or partly in the peninsula, including Quintana Roo.

This will make it a lot easier for visitors based in Cancun to explore the region and its Mayan heritage.

Other than the airport, Mexico has opened a brand new airport serving Tulum, its second-busiest destination on the Mayan Coast, and this will increase travel demand, and thus air traffic even further.

Why do we travel? That’s a big question.

There’s a whole manner of different motivations, but surely one of the simplest and most important reasons is simply to have fun.

Of course, fun is something that’s hard to define and something that everyone has a different concept of, which is why Wallet Hub has surveyed 180 different U.S. cities on no fewer than 65 different metrics to find out which are generally the most fun to spend time in.

The metrics included everything from the number of attractions to the average price of food and drink.

It even focused on how many movie theatres, beer gardens, music venues, or coffee shops there are per capita – really making sure to capture as many different things as possible that can be considered fun.

At the end of it all, these 8 cities came out as the most fun to visit in all of America:

1. Las Vegas, Nevada

It probably shouldn’t be a surprise that Vegas came out on top in a ranking of how fun places are, should it?

‘Sin City’ is well-known for being an adult playground thanks to its famous casinos and infamous nightlife.

It was the top-ranking city in this study in terms of overall entertainment and recreation rank, and nightlife and parties rank – it also scored well in terms of the number of restaurants and festivals it has per capita.

Despite its adult entertainment reputation, there are still some family-friendly attractions in Vegas, such as Hershey’s Chocolate World, the Shark Reef Aquarium, and many theme park rides at various hotels.

2. Orlando, Florida

And while Las Vegas is probably America’s best adult city for fun, Orlando could be its best family city for fun.

Of course, there is much more to Orlando than just the theme parks, but they help make it a very inviting place to go with children.

Like Vegas, Orlando is not always what it seems, it actually has a pretty vibrant nightlife with some fantastic bars and clubs, so there is plenty to entertain adults too.

It also ranked as the cheapest city in the top 8 of this list.

3. Miami, Florida

Combining fantastic nightlife with epic beaches and a wonderful art scene, it’s probably no surprise to see Miami in this list either.

The city has been having a record-breaking year for tourism and is a brilliant launchpad to visit other places in Florida (via train) or even the Caribbean (via cruise).

Any place where you go straight from the beach to the bar sounds fun to us.

4. Atlanta, Georgia

Predicted to be one of the most popular destinations in America for 2024, Atlanta is a city of great music, shopping, entertainment, and green spaces.

Great entertainment can be found at theatres such as the Alliance and the Atlanta Magic Theatre, while there is also an excellent zoo, the chance to ride cable cars at nearby Stone Mountain Park, and even the Chick-fil-A College Football Hall of Fame, making it truly a city with something for everyone.

5. San Francisco, California

San Francisco came out as the most expensive city in the top 8 of this study, but it’s definitely still a fun place to be, even if it might hit your wallet a little harder.

Entertainment can be found in the shape of the zoo, the Museum of 3D Illusions, Golden Gate Park, a tour of Alcatraz, or even taking up a hike on one of the many trails surrounding the city.

Winter is a fantastic time to visit to witness America’s tallest living Christmas tree, the decorated coastal inns of Monterey County, or even to try ice skating at one of several seasonal rinks.

6. New Orleans, Louisiana

One of the cities that could rival Las Vegas as the best nightlife location in America, New Orleans is a place for those who love live music, entertainment, and partying.

The city is a high-energy place and has a great schedule of festivals, carnivals, and events that keep it rocking right throughout the year.

7. Austin, Texas

Austin was recently billed as one of the world’s fastest-growing tourist destinations, so it goes without saying that it’s a fun place to be.

Perhaps a little slower-paced in terms of nightlife than some others on this list, Austin has a small-town feel and a proximity to beautiful nature that makes it an ideal place to blow away the cobwebs.

8. Chicago, Illinois

Chicago enjoyed a revival in popularity during 2023 and has a little bit of something for everyone.

From its famous shows to its widely varied range of museums, Chicago will keep you entertained, whether you’re traveling solo, with a partner, or with family.

With winter approaching, days getting shorter, and winds blowing colder by the minute, we understand why taking a Transatlantic trip to Europe, where the gray season can feel rather gloomy, might not seem the most attractive thought.

A majority of Americans will be heading instead to the Caribbean, South America, or if feeling particularly adventurous, Southeast Asia, but little do they know that not all of the Old Continent will face low temperatures and snow flurries in the upcoming weeks.

In fact, one of the trendiest European destinations remains relatively warm throughout winter, and it’s actually best experienced in the off-season:

Why Sicily Is One Of The Most Underrated Winter Hotspots In Europe

Recently, Lonely Planet went as far as naming Sicily one of the best destinations in Europe for winter sun.

As the largest island not only in Italy but the entire Mediterranean Sea, it has been one of the most popular European getaways this year, particularly over summer.

Home to beautiful beaches, millennia-old cities, a rugged nature, and a vibrant culture that’s distinct within the wider Italy, it has drawn in millions of vacationers who were either hoping to live out their White Lotus fantasy, relax and enjoy the subtropical vibes, or immerse themselves in History.

As any of you who have paid Sicily a visit earlier this year will now already, however, is that it can be impossibly hot, and unbearably crowded in the high season – which, believe it or not, can begin as early as May, and end as late as November.

Much like Andalusia in Spain, Sicily is one of the naturally hottest regions of Europe due to being located closer to the tropic lines and near the African continent, and this brings us to point one.

Unlike most of the continent, especially tourist hotspots like Paris, London, and Amsterdam, winters in Sicily can be rather mild.

Sicily Is Not Your Usual European Winter Destination

Don’t get us wrong: it does get cold, but it’s usually in the evenings.

Locals still enjoy plenty of long hours of sunshine every day and an average temperature 59°F in January, the peak of winter, though this can vary depending on elevation and location on the island (generally, the coast is warmer).

The risk of precipitation is quite low in Sicily year-round.

It may increase in winter, but even in January, the worst month for weather-based activities, tourists can still expect an average of 50-60mm (2~2.5 in) of rainfall spread over 9 to 10 rainy days.

That’s not much at all, and then it only gets progressively better from February onward.

A Crowd-Free Taormina Is Possible

Then we have point two: as Sicily is mostly treated as a summer getaway, as opposed to a year-round destination, crowds tend to dissipate over winter.

This means you will essentially have the beautiful streets of Taormina, a hillside town featuring an iconic Greek theater overlooking the Mediterranean, the charming alleyways of Syracuse, and the quaint harbor of Cefalù (mostly) all to yourself.

You may expect locals to continue flocking into those places, but the concentration of foreign tourists this time of year in Europe is normally elsewhere, in Spain’s autonomous Canary Islands or Portugal’s up-and-coming Madeira.

In bigger cities, like the metropolitan Sicilian capital Palermo or its second-largest conurbation Catania, you may notice points of interest remain busy, but these are major urban centers with a fast-paced life anyway.

And trust us when we say, Sicily is every bit as fascinating a destination in winter as it is in summer or the fall.

Sicily In Winter Is Not For Swimming, But It’s Perfect For Sightseeing

Whether it’s exploring the ancient Greco-Roman temples in the Valley of the Kings, sightseeing in Palermo, easily one of Italy’s most exciting city breaks, home to a plethora of architectural gems, or visiting quaint villages with a snow-capped Etna for backdrop, you will find sunny Sicily makes for a great winter escape.

The only downside really is the temperature of the water this time of year.

The Mediterranean cools off around Sicily in the shoulder months, which means it is certainly not as warm or attractive for swimming in winter, but the breathtaking panoramic views of the coastline are the same, and the coastal drives into blood orange-tinged sunsets are just as mesmerizing.

If you’re going to Sicily in winter, bear in mind it is first and foremost a cultural destination, and while you won’t be required to pack heavy winter jackets, and you may even feel comfortable wearing shorts in the daytime, it is not a year-round beach destination.

If it’s a Mediterranean beach getaway you’re after, it’s best you put off visiting until early May at the earliest.

However, if it’s the historic temples that attract you the most, you’re appreciative of the delectable Sicilian cuisine, which includes Italian classics like arancini and caponata, and you’re looking instead for a slow-paced, relaxing vacation that does not necessarily involve the sea, you will not be disappointed.
