A Safe City

Prague is highly sought after by solo travelers because it is known to be one of the safest cities in Europe.

Though there is crime in Prague, this tends to be petty theft and street crimes, with the violent crime rate in the city very low.

The U.S. Department of State has given the Czech Republic a Level 1 advisory rating, which is the lowest rating available. This means that U.S. citizens should exercise normal precautions in the country and that it is a very safe country.

Like all travelers, solo travelers should take extra care with their belongings in crowded places and especially on public transport. But otherwise, you will feel very safe, even after dark, as a solo traveler in Prague.

Best For Budget Travelers

Prague has long been known for being one of the most affordable destinations in Europe, and although prices have increased in recent years, that is still true today.

Everything you need as a traveler can be found for a reasonable price in the city.

Research has found that it costs around $45-$65 per day to visit Prague as a budget traveler.

Around $5 will buy you a hearty and delicious traditional lunch in a local restaurant. And as of January the price of a pint of beer was around $3 on average.

In most cases, it is cheaper to order a beer in a restaurant than it is to order a bottle of water. So if you needed an excuse for a lunchtime pint here it is!

Prague is more expensive than other Czech cities but it is still one of the most affordable European capitals you can visit.

So Much To See And Do

It doesn’t matter how long or short your trip to Prague, you’ll never run out of things to see and do. Prague is one of the oldest cities in Europe and it has the architectural diversity to prove it.

One of Prague’s biggest tourist sights is Prague Castle and it is well worth exploring. Other historical sights you shouldn’t miss on your solo explorations include the Charles Bridge, the Old Town Astronomical Clock and the Old-New Synagogue.

The Old-New Synagogue is Europe’s oldest active synagogue as well as being one of the first Gothic buildings in Prague.

Consider booking a tour around all of Prague’s historic sights when you’re traveling solo if you want to learn more about the attractions you’re visiting and meet like-minded travelers at the same time.

A Social City

The United States is a continent-sized country and a surprisingly diverse one at that in terms of tourist offer. From the towering skyscrapers of New York to the glitz and glamor of Los Angeles, there is something for every type of traveler.

This surprising city was voted best to visit in the States, ranking higher than all other tourist favorites, from East to West:

Chicago Is The Best U.S. City

According to CN Traveler readers who participated in their yearly survey, the best city for visiting in the U.S. is Chicago, Illinois.

Though it is a city best known for boasting great connectivity to other global destinations through its busy O’Hare International Airport, which officially serves as an intermediate stop for many Americans going abroad, Chicago is so much more than a mere transit hub.

Topping the CN Traveler list ‘yet again‘, it is the third-largest city in the States, home to beautiful architecture, an inspiring underground music scene, and most importantly, an amazing local cuisine.

Incredible Cuisine

Not that many American cities are renowned for their local food.

The U.S. may be a colossal state, but as it is a nation built by and for migrants, food is either heavily influenced by third cultures or directly imported from other countries, lacking the traditional aspect of it.

Chicago is no exception, as it does not have a wealth of native ingredients and dishes itself, but on the other hand, it is known for its creative take on world cuisine and numerous delicacies.

These include the Chicago-style hot dog, the Italian-inspired beef sandwich, and Chicago Barbecue.

The most iconic of them, deep-dish pizza, is baked around a steel pan, resembling an upside-down pie filled with mozzarella cheese.

Some of the best restaurants for trying deep-dish pizza include Giordano’s, with up to 9,721 impressions on TripAdvisor so far, mostly positive, Spacca Napoli Pizzeria, and Piece, a go-to spot for both sampling the unique creation and belting out songs on karaoke nights.

An Electric Nightlife

When it comes to nightlife, Chicago is probably one of the most vibrant cities in America, home to a plethora of entertainment venues, dive bars, nightclubs, and pubs, and no visit would be complete without a night out in trendy Andersonville.

Other than being a Bohemian neighborhood brimming with life after sundown, it is popular for its Swedish architecture, further proof of Chicago’s undeniable multiculturalism.

It houses the Swedish American Museum, where artifacts from Scandinavian migrant communities are exhibited, and Clark Street, a commercial zone lined by adorable antique shops, rustic-looking cafes, and heritage row buildings.

In fact, Chicago’s architectural display is of the reasons why it is so admired by outsiders.

A Fascinating Mix Of Old And New

Strolling along the Chicago River, which cuts through the heart of the city and branches out into several smaller canals, you will meet clusters upon clusters of modern skyscrapers, including the landmark, 110-storey Willis Tower.

In other parts of the city, you will also find ‘Polish Cathedrals’ – a North American architectural style, in spite of their name – evocative of the Old World, and the castle-like Chicago Water Tower, built 154 years ago, and one of the oldest-standing structures.

The best neighborhood for viewing historical buildings is the Old Town, settled by Germans in the 1850s, and a protected zone with a well-preserved Victorian-era townscape.

St Michael’s Church in the Old Town is one of the few buildings in Chicago, alongside the Water Tower, to have survived the Great Fire of 1871, responsible for destroying much of the earlier historical settlement.

If you’re the museum type and would like a deeper cultural immersion beyond just sightseeing, the Art Institute of Chicago and the lesser-known Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures are not to be missed.

According to Conde Nast readers, Isla Mujeres is one of the best island destinations in the world due to its tropical vibes, hospitality, and surprisingly diverse tourist offers.

Though there is certainly nothing wrong with that, and it’s something vacationers in Mexico absolutely love doing, you can do more in Mujeres than just lay on a beach all day.

When you need some time away from your hotel and a bigger thrill, you can join other adventurers on a sailing boat adventure around the island, going snorkeling and diving and practicing a range of watersports, including kayaking and paddleboarding.

Isla Mujeres is, in fact, home to a section of the world’s second-largest reef system, so you should expect to find vibrant colors and unique marine life going on safe, certified expeditions.

We find that unlikely to be true if you’re vacationing in the Mexican Caribbean, but if you’re not the water type, you can always go golf carting on land or exploring Mujeres’ unspoiled tropical nature by renting a bike for the day.

U.S. News recently released their findings after drawing data from more than 17,000 people worldwide on what the best destinations for solo travel were. Participants were asked to fill out a survey with numerous factors, from cultural accessibility to safety.

A stunning country lined with charming townhouses, flowing canals, and bicycles galore — it’s no surprise that the Netherlands landed on the list as one of the best places for solo travel!

Safe For All

There’s something to be said about a destination being safe for solo travelers, but there’s even more to say when it’s considered safe for EVERYONE.

In recent news, Amsterdam even just launched a skatepark that is “a safe-haven for LGBTQ and women.” A country that supports safe spaces for anyone is a country we want to see!

The city-based skatepark welcomes all who want a space to be themselves, meet new people, practice their passion, and feel no judgment.

Thrill Seekers

If we dig a little deeper into the findings, the Netherlands scored 57.9 in the adventure category. While the country is undoubtedly known for its colorful tulip fields, windmills, and vibrant capital city, the country also has another side most people don’t get to experience.

Surprisingly, the Netherlands has so many options when it comes to adventurous activities and things to do. Let’s look at Amsterdam: the city installed the A’DAM Lookout swing that sits on top of a 20-story rooftop!

If you’re looking to see a little more of the country than just the capital- you’re in for a treat. Bungee jumping, hiking, kitesurfing, and catacombs, there’s really no shortage of activities for the thrill seekers out there.

Did Someone Say Easy Transport?

As solo travelers, it’s not ideal to be exploring a new country with no means to get around. Luckily, the Netherlands takes the hassle away from transportation.

Once you’ve landed in a specific region or city, the trams and metros are definitely the best way to get around. However, if you’re still on the move through the country, then it’s best to stick with the regional trains and buses for longer journeys.

A canal-centered country, many cities in the Netherlands also offer transportation by boat or ferry: what better way to see a new destination?

If you’ve read ANYTHING about the Netherlands, then I’m sure you’ve heard of the bicycle culture here. It’s very much the norm amongst the Dutch to get around by bike.

Whether you’re in a rush to get to a tour or looking to meet friends at the bar, expect to see a couple hundred bikes on the way. It’s pretty simple in any city to hire a bike for the week or day!

Welcoming Community

What’s more, the Netherlands (particularly Amsterdam) is probably one of the best spots in Europe for amazing hostels. If you want to meet new friends fast, this is the way to do it!

From party hostels to accommodations on an island, the Netherlands offers a little something for all. Anything goes in this forward-thinking country, and it’s easy for anyone to feel at home!

The Dutch have seen it all and are extremely welcoming to those from all walks of life. After visiting over 32 countries myself (mostly solo), I can confidently say I’ve felt the least judged in the Netherlands. Locals will always greet you with a friendly smile and a wave!

It’s not hard to see why the Mexican Caribbean is one of the world’s top-selling vacation packages worldwide: from Cancun to Chetumal, it boasts a stunning coastline bounded by the most translucent of waters, bestrewn with ancient Mayan sites and luxurious resorts.

Due to the area’s popularity, however, beaches can get a bit crowded, particularly in Northern Quintana Roo, closer to Cancun, where a majority of international tourists land, not to mention the sargassum situation, which worsens with every passing year.

Fortunately, there are still some pristine swimming spots to be found that are not only free of overtourism but that are also known for their striking beauty:

Punta Maroma Is One Of The Most Beautiful Beaches Close To Cancun

Punta Maroma is a sandy strip located 35 km from Cancun, south of the far more popular resort zone Puerto Morelos. It is considered by many the Mexican Caribbean’s best-kept secret due to its relative remoteness.

Unlike Playa Marlin or Playa Delfines, which are popular day trips for vacationers basing themselves in Cancun’s jam-packed Hotel Zone, Maroma is not as famous, despite being on the Highway 307 route, part of the tourist zone commonly known as Mayan Riviera.

Although it is certainly not development-free, it lacks the crowds and riotous nightlife that have transformed numerous sunny hotspots for the worse. Instead, Maroma is surprisingly quaint, having been named one of the most beautiful beaches in the Mexican Caribbean by México Desconocido.

According to the local travel publication, due to its distance from central Cancun, the sands are ‘almost virgin’, allowing visitors who venture this far out to experience a different side of Mexico, where they can find peace and enjoy their beach day ‘calmly’.

A Crowd-Free Tropical Oasis

Other than walking the soft, warm white sands and swimming in the crystalline waters, they can practice diving and try and spot marine life, which includes dolphins, sea turtles, and other emblematic species that inhabit the Riviera.

Among other activities available, tourists can go on a 4×4 or horseback tour of the dunes, hike in the jungle enclosing the beach, snorkel, or fish, though the latter will require renting the necessary equipment and obtaining permission from beach authorities on-site.

If you’re hoping to relax, bury your feet in the sand, and have a stress-free afternoon, you can do that too: the magazine mentions ‘excellent’ restaurants and spas in neighboring hotels. TripAdvisor lists Secrets Maroma, El Dorado Maroma, Catalonia Playa Maroma, and Belmond’s Maroma as some of the best resorts on the premises.

For a unique experience, guests who are either traveling solo or as a couple can book a rustic overwater bungalow in an all-inclusive, adults-only five-star resort.

Beach Access Is Not Free

While the beach is indeed a tropical oasis shielded from mass tourism, its seclusion is definitely not free of charge: there are no public access points, meaning only resort guests or those who purchase a day pass at one of the resorts are permitted entry.

When it comes to accessibility, Punta Maroma can easily be reached by taxi or car, but public transportation options may be more limited. One-way transfers cost, on average, USD $20 from Playa del Carmen and between USD $60 and USD $80 from Cancun.

Visiting with a rental car, tourists must take Highway 307 towards Chacala on the Cancun-Tulum route. Alternatively, those staying in a local resort can contact the concierge about arranging a shuttle from Cancun International Airport, some 35.3 km away.

Guided tours and excursions leaving from Cancun and other departure points along the Riviera are also an option. For instance, this USD$150 scuba-diving tour by Maroma Adventures will grant you access to the beach, as well as its protected coral reef. Hotel pickup is usually offered.

One of Mexico’s colonial cities has just been named ‘the most beautiful’ in the country, beating household names like Mexico City, Puerto Vallarta, Cancun and even the wider Mayan Riviera to the number one spot. The honor was bestowed by Mexico’s own Travel Awards, and it’s fair to say many were surprised with how voting went.

Mexico’s fame as the King of Tourism may be almost exclusively attributed to its Caribbean hubs and a plethora of well-preserved pre-Columbian settlements. While Mexico’s Mayan World is still largely responsible for the country’s record-breaking numbers, yet another facet of its multicultural appeal is emerging as an equally-powerful attraction.

Namely, Mexico’s colonial era cities, that are among some of the first European settlements in the Americas, with one in particular eclipsing all others in beauty and charm:

Mexico’s Beauty Lies In Its Multicultural Past

Mexico Travel Awards is a yearly event where the nation’s top tourism authorities gather to celebrate achievements across different sectors of the industry, such as the most outstanding and best performing municipalities. In any case, there is one trophy not based purely on broken records and booking trends.

This year, 20 municipalities were nominated for the title of Mexico’s Most Beautiful, including San Miguel de Allende, a Neo-Gothic/Baroque fusion that has been rediscovered by the American audience in recent months, Merida, the Yucatan state’s number one city, and of course, Mexico City, the vibrant, sprawling mess of a capital.

Despite being strong contenders, none of them took the award home in the end. Mexico’s crown jewel turns out to be the unsung Guanajuato City, the capital of its namesake state and one of the oldest continuously inhabited sites in the Americas – even before Spain’s path got intertwined with pre-Columbian Mexico’s.

Much like the aforementioned San Miguel, Guanajuato is famous around the world for nearly-intact colonial monuments, though on a much larger scale. Its Old Town, or Ciudad vieja district has been inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site all the way back in 1988, not only due to its architectural wonders, but the History it carries.

The Rising Trend Of ‘Colonial’ Tourism

Guanajuato was founded by Spaniards on the site of other native American settlements in the mid-16th century, and served at one point as the world’s top silver exporter before turning its back to the Empire and joining the fight for an independent Mexico. Naturally, this turbulent, yet fascinating past has been engraved in the city’s urban landscape.

It is composed of a maze of narrow winding streets lined with colorful traditional houses resembling those found in Iberian Europe – Spain and Portugal – and it is dotted with Baroque gems, including the Valenciana Temple and the most easily recognized landmark, the Saint Francis church, featuring its iconic bright yellow hue.

Although it is not as huge as Cancun or its main rival Mexico City yet, Guanajuato is surely becoming more popular every year. The state itself, which carries the same name, has witnessed a steady increase in arrival figures from 2007 to 2018 culminating in 956,000+ yearly visitors. However, that was years before Mexico’s Renaissance had officially begun.

This year, eight to nine million visitors are expected, a sharp increase from 2018’s figures, just shy of the millionth landmark. This proves Guanajuato has a key role to play in promoting Mexico as a diverse destination, and a world capital for culture acknowledged for more than just its pristine beaches and luxury all-inclusives.

What Other Cities Made The List?

The top 4 most voted cities, excluding Guanajuato, were:
1. Mexico City
2. Queretaro
3. Morelia
4. Monterrey
The Mexico Travel Awards is, in fact, a tourist-voted award, proving Guanajuato is indeed the most appealing city out of all the twenty surveyed. Other than being lauded for its architectural grandeur and contribution to History, it has been described as a ‘culturally rich city with numerous museums, theaters, music venues and festivals‘.

All of the top five cities have one thing in common: they have managed to retain their Spanish-era allure, in spite of the turning of the centuries and the overwhelming wave of industrialization that spread across North America throughout the 20th, and early 21st centuries, tearing down everything ancient standing on its path.
