Demand for budget accommodation in the U.S. is increasing. In April of this year, there was an 18% increase in demand for budget and economy short-term rental options.

But with a little innovation and out-of-the-box thinking, it is possible to travel the world, whether for leisure or as a digital nomad, without spending a penny on hotels.

Travelers are becoming increasingly creative in how they save money to continue funding their adventures.

Here are three ways that budget travelers can secure accommodation for free:

House Sitting

Some homeowners don’t like leaving their property vacant when they take their vacations. Second homeowners are also aware of the risks posed by leaving their property empty for an extended period of time.

Enter the house sitter: someone who stays in the property, ensuring that the property looks occupied by turning the lights on occasionally and generally using the home.

Some house sitters are also asked to do gentle chores, such as ensuring that plants are watered or light cleaning.

In exchange, you can stay somewhere new without paying a penny for a hotel. This is a particularly attractive proposition in big cities like New York or Tokyo, where accommodation costs can be ridiculously expensive.

Walking dogs, changing litter trays, and of course, ensuring the pets are fed and watered would be your main requirements. Outside of these chores, you would be free to spend your time exploring your vacation destination.

Demand for pet sitters is high because the cost of animal care can be prohibitively expensive for many pet owners. Many more would simply prefer that their beloved pets stay at home, rather than be caged in a cattery or kennel.

It is a win-win situation for animal-loving budget travelers.

UK-based TrustedHousesitters is one of the biggest pet-sitting websites in the world and charges its members an annual membership fee of $169. A small price to pay for unlimited access to free accommodation.

Home Exchanges

If you want to travel without the work of chores or dog sitting then you could also consider exchanging your own home with someone else. Think ‘The Holiday’, but without Cameron Diaz and Jude Law!

The home exchange concept is not new, but it is growing in popularity as economic restrictions force some travelers to look outside the box for affordable accommodation.

You can exchange your own house or apartment with someone else, giving you the opportunity to travel anywhere in the world.

This means that your home won’t be left empty while you’re traveling, which can be hugely beneficial, but it does mean that you’ll have to be happy with someone else staying in and using your home.

There are a huge number of home exchange websites available to choose from.

One example is Intervac Home Exchange. With this site, no money switches hands between the exchangers, so you can get free accommodation anywhere on earth. You can try the site with a free 21-day trial, after which the annual membership fee is $115.

With that in mind, here are five ways you can avoid being a victim of pickpocketing this summer:

Be Aware in High-Traffic Areas

Pickpockets love to operate in high-traffic areas. When you’re in a crowd, you expect to be jostled, and that makes it easier for pickpockets to get close to you and access your valuables.

High-traffic areas tend to be places where there are distractions. Whether you are in a train station trying to plan your journey or at a popular tourist attraction taking a selfie, you are likely to be disoriented or focusing on something else when you’re in a location that attracts high volumes of people.

Pickpockets prey on the parts of the city where they know there will be the most tourists, so you’re also most at risk when you are surrounded by other tourists.

One of the most common pickpocketing tactics is called the ‘bump and go’. One thief will pretend to bump into you accidentally then an accomplice will pick your pocket whilst you’re distracted.

This common tactic works best in high-traffic areas, so it’s important to be mindful when you’re in a crowd. If you are bumped, jostled, or if something just doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts and move away from the area.

Often measures intended to prevent pickpocketing in popular tourist attractions can actually be used to the pickpocket’s advantage.

One example of this is when tourist attractions boast signs intended to be helpful. These may read ‘beware pickpockets’ or ‘pickpockets operate here’.

You can best protect your valuables by keeping them at the front of your body. A discrete money belt will be harder for pickpockets to access.

Be Wary At The ATM

Avoid using ATM machines in quiet or run-down areas. If someone is standing too close to you when you’re trying to withdraw cash, then cancel your transaction and use a different machine instead.

You should be particularly wary of using remote ATMs if you’re traveling alone.

If you’re still not sure if an ATM machine is safe to use, then consider paying for goods and services by card instead of withdrawing cash. Many hotels will also have ATM machines or currency exchange services that are safe and reliable.

Don’t Flash The Cash

Try to camouflage your wealth. If you have to take out your wallet to pay for something, remove just the cash you need. Don’t reveal a wad of notes. And never count your money in public.

You can also conceal your wealth by leaving any large or expensive jewelry pieces at home or keeping them in your hotel room safe. Expensive designer clothes from big brands are also best avoided.

If you look expensive or are showing off expensive items, then you are implying that there is something of value in your purse or wallet.

Pickpockets look for two things: easy targets and lucrative targets. The key is to avoid making yourself look like either. So as well as hiding your wealth, you should also avoid looking like a tourist.

Items such as baseball caps, college T-shirts or sweatshirts, and big brand logos can make you stand out from the crowd, particularly in Europe, where these items are less popular. And while there’s nothing wrong with standing out, it will make you an obvious target for pickpockets.

Recognize Pickpockets

Finally, the best way to avoid being pickpocketed is to recognize pickpockets and understand how they operate.

If you notice someone loitering in a public place, checking out passers-by, or their purses and shopping bags, then they may be a pickpocket.

If someone that you don’t know is overly familiar, hugging you, or standing too close while offering directions or advice, then they could also be a pickpocket. Remember that pickpockets often work in teams, so the person being overly familiar with you could be distracting you so that their accomplice can take your wallet.

Knowledge is power, so the more you know about pickpockets and the way they operate, the more likely it is that you can avoid being their next victim.

To become more appealing, hosts might exaggerate the location and say things like “walking distance” and “close to”, when in fact it might not be walkable at all.

In rare cases more common in other countries, some properties may charge for the use of air conditioning, Wi-Fi, and not-so-clear cleaning fees.

It’s important to read the fine print of the listing to ensure there are no surprise charges upon checkout.

Although uncommon, it does happen and can result in an uncomfortable back-and-forth dispute between the host, yourself, and Airbnb.

According to the 2023 Travel Trends Report from the travel booking website Hopper, travelers are spending 30% less time planning trips compared to 2019.

Travelers are planning trips just 5 weeks in advance, compared to almost 7 weeks in advance for pre-pandemic trips.

And when it comes to actually booking trips, travelers are doing it just 3 weeks in advance.

So how can you save money on last-minute trips this year when everything from hotel prices to airfare has skyrocketed in 2023?

Here are six savvy tips to help you score a good deal on last-minute travel:

1. Be Flexible On Travel Dates

One of the best ways to save money on last-minute travel is to be flexible with your travel dates. Departing mid-week is an especially good way to save money on airfare.

According to data from Hopper, travelers who fly mid-week can save an average of $90 on domestic flights and over $140 on international flights.

2. Avoid Saturday Night Stays

Another big way to save money is by avoiding Saturday night hotel stays. This is often the most expensive night at hotels, and avoiding it can help travelers save 25% off their nightly rate, according to Hopper’s report.

Checking out on a Saturday morning isn’t ideal if you were hoping to make the most out of the weekend, but it’s a big way you can save money overall.

3. Be Flexible On Destination

If you don’t have your heart set on one particular destination, being flexible about where you go is a great way to save money.

The “Everywhere Search” feature on Skyscanner allows you to search flights to all destinations from your home city so you can see the cheapest options. You can also do something similar on Google Flights by clicking the “Explore Destinations” button after you put in your home city for departure.

4. Opt For City Breaks

Last-minute airfare to big cities in the United States is often cheaper than you might expect. For example, the average airfare to Miami is $264, and to Las Vegas it’s $298.

Compare that to West Yellowstone ($772) or Martha’s Vineyard ($375) and you can see that a city break works out to be cheaper than visiting a national park or beach town destination.

5. Find Last-Minute Hotel Deals

Hotels that still have room inventory a few days in advance often offer great last-minute deals as an attempt to fill their rooms.

Websites like Hotwire and Hotels.com are worth checking for last-minute hotel deals. It’s possible to score great prices that just aren’t available weeks or months in advance… but be careful if you’re traveling during a destination’s peak season because last-minute deals may not be available, and hotels can even be fully sold out!

6. Combine Work And Travel

“Workations” that combine work and travel have become extremely popular in recent years as more employees have the ability to work remotely or in a hybrid environment.

According to Hopper, 77% of travelers plan to tack on work to the beginning or end of a vacation this year. If you can work remotely during part of your trip, it makes it easier to depart mid-week and get better deals on flights and hotels.

For the past 15 months, Disney World has been celebrating its 50^th anniversary, with many of its festivities continuing up until March 31, 2023. With less than 3 months left of its celebration plans, the attraction has announced a list of savings to entice visitors to its many resorts after the official celebrations conclude.

2023 is still an important year for Walt Disney, as the entertainment company will be marking its 100th anniversary since being founded in 1923. The celebrations will be mainly focused at Disneyland Resort, but will eventually move to Disney World later in the year.

There are plenty of reasons to add Disney World to your 2023 destination list, from its latest attraction Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind to popular favorites like Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, and the revived Fantasmic!

Highlights coming to Disney World in 2023 will also include Tron Lightcycle Run, one of the fastest new rides, and a new family-style barbecue restaurant called Woody’s Roundup Rodeo BBQ in Toy Story Land.

Keep in mind that the cost to visit Disney World will vary based on which of the four parks you want to visit. Animal Kingdom is the lowest-priced park costing between $109 and $159, while Magic Kingdom is the most expensive park, costing between $124 and $189, and it’s best to reserve your tickets as soon as possible.

Since May, US air travelers have experienced an increase in flight delays by approximately 25% compared to last year. While the delays and cancellations are due to a myriad of factors, they also don’t seem to be going away anytime soon. What’s a stranded traveler to do?

To make those dreaded flight delays a little more bearable, here are some easy and fun ways to pass the time at the airport.

Hit Up The Lounge

This may seem like an obvious one, but don’t rule out the option to check in at the airport lounge if you’re flight is delayed by a few hours or more. Whether you’re a frequent flyer with lounge access already or are thinking about splurging on a day pass, airport lounges can really help ease the stress of travel delays.

Before your trip, we recommended checking the lounge amenities of where you’ll be flying out of so that you can gauge if your splurge will be worth it. Many lounges come with free food, drink, showers, nap pods (!), workout equipment, and even a spa – a stay here is practically a vacation in itself.

Catch Up On Your Podcasts

Addicted to podcasts? Who isn’t nowadays. In case of a flight delay the next time you travel, make sure you download the latest episodes of some of your favorite podcasts to your phone before setting off to the airport so that you’ll have plenty of entertainment to fill those hours at the airport.
