The best and warmest beach is Los Cristianos, with an average winter temperature of 20.6 ºC —around 69 ºF— and many sunny hours. There are other nearby beaches with very similar temperatures, like Adeje, Las Galletas, El Medano, Granadilla De Abona, Los Gigantes, and Guia De Isora. 3. Syracuse, Sicily, Italy

When it comes to traveling to Europe, Italy is always a wise option. Now that new high-speed trains are connecting more cities, moving around this country is getting easier for travelers. When it comes to warm destinations, of course, going south is always wise.

In Syracuse, Sicily, travelers will find the coziest spots on the Italian coast. This destination offers fascinating historical buildings, beautiful public beaches like Oasi Gelsomineto with clean water and nice sand, and nice weather above 16ºC —61ºF— with sunny days.

4. Agios Nikolaos, Crete, Greece

6. Malaga, Spain

Malaga, another great winter destination in Spain, has all the ingredients for a perfect vacation. While the average winter temperature is 16ºC —60.8ºF— there are many winter days where the temperature can go above 20ºC or 68ºF.

This fascinating coastal city is extremely popular during the summer but also has a lot to offer during winter. Some of its main attractions are sunny days with clear blue skies—rainy days aren’t common during winter— and, of course, beaches like the famous Playa la malagueta. Narrowing it down to four only was no easy task, but we have come to the conclusion that, based on cultural offer, their plethora of tourist attractions, and historical relevance, the selection below are truly the top most overlooked cities in Europe for the upcoming season.

Plovdiv is absolutely packed with ancient monuments, including a famous theater built atop one of its many hills as far back as the 2nd century AD, a Roman stadium only partially exposed, currently buried beneath the high street, beautiful Orthodox churches, and remnants of prehistorical forts – an open-air museum in every sense.

Besides appreciating the Bulgarian Revivalism of the Old Town, guests will also be delighted by the choice of dishes here, ranging from standard Balkan cuisine, with all your moussakas and burek, to more local, traditional dishes, such as shkembe chorba (tripe soup), our personal favorite, or banitsa (a pastry filled with crumbled cheese and served with yogurt).

Brasov, Romania

A lesson in Gothic

Just north of Bulgaria, an eleven-hour train ride will take you from the capital of Sofia, on the easternmost provinces of the Slav country, to the small, atmospheric Brasov, a Romanian city in the heart of Transylvania. With a small center and housing fewer than 300,000 inhabitants, it can easily be seen in its entirety over a prolonged weekend.

If you want to live out your medieval fantasies, walking winding alleyways that have remained virtually untouched for centuries, exploring citadels tucked away in dense forests where bears, wolves, and other animals roam freely, and eerie castles straight out of a Gothic scene only mystical creatures like Dracula would dare live in, Brasov might be your cuppa.

Within the namesake county’s boundaries, visitors will find a monumental church aptly titled The Black Church, with a charcoal-colored, somber exterior; a multitude of castles, including Romania’s most famous, Bran, closely associated with the myth of vampires; and the gorgeous Peles, formerly a royal residence with a luxurious wooden interior.

Moreover, Brasov is overdevelopment-free. You will find big brands and chain restaurants like McDonald’s within leisure complexes or in the suburban parts of town, but local businesses and family-run restaurants serving Transylvanian food – a mix of Hungarian and Saxon influences – and antique shops help it retain an untarnished 14th-century charm.

Novi Sad, Serbia

This year’s European Capital of Culture

The ageless historical center of the autonomous Vojvodina province, in the northernmost part of Serbia, Novi Sad is the second most influential city within the nation, both culturally and economically, and has a number of awards under its belt as a testament to its grandeur. As a matter of fact, this year, it was named a European Capital of Culture.

One of the first non-EU (European Union) cities to receive the honor, the so-called ‘Serbian Athens’ is renowned for its rich heritage, comprising a nearly intact 19th-century nucleus, where the influences of neoclassical and baroque are found – most notoriously, the landmark ‘Name of Mary’ Church, whose towering shadow is cast permanently on the main plaza.

Located on the shores of the Danube, Novi Sad features a modern riverfront promenade lined with laid-back cafes and quirky art galleries and an old military fortress (Petrovaradin), now converted into a museum. Additionally, Petrovaradin houses a restaurant boasting breathtaking views of the Danube and the city’s skyline.

Arguably, it is Serbia’s prettiest city: it has more vibrant colors compared to its southern counterpart, the capital of Belgrade, and it offers a vast array of tourist attractions, including lush green areas – Danube and Karmenica Parks – the Vojvodine Museum, and the Gallery of Matica Srpska, rated among the best in their sub-categories.

Varazdin, Croatia

A different side of Croatia you weren’t expecting

Croatia is a country straddling the Adriatic Sea, one of the minor seas in the wider Mediterranean, most famous for having crystal-clear water beaches and a picturesque Dalmatian Coast. However, contrary to popular belief, it is more than simply a sunny getaway: in its northern hinterlands, close to the border with Slovenia, lies a fairytale city ready to be discovered.

Upon first glance, even the most inattentive of tourists will notice Varazdin distinguishes itself from Dalmatia, and the Roman-era buildings dotting the coast, and not merely architecturally. Besides resembling the Slovenian towns it borders, Varazdin and its natives borrow heavily from Central European customs, as opposed to being purely South Slavic/ Balkan:

The city view is dominated by the whitewashed Varazdin Castle, a medieval stronghold now open as a museum dedicated to local History and artifacts, Central Europe’s signature red-tiled roofs and elegant baroque facades, which follow a pattern of light tones of yellow, pink, and green. In other words, it’s worlds away from Dalmatia.

With its numerous art galleries, a city center that is almost entirely pedestrianized and full of alfresco dining options, buskers playing Serbo-Croatian folk songs, and small, niche museums that deserve a visit, Varazdin is probably the most Instagrammable place we visited in Croatia north of Zagreb, the capital.

No Entry Requirements For Any Of The Countries Above

For the first time since 2020, Europe is open without travel restrictions. After serving as a reference for strict pandemic management for the last two and a half years, since October 20, it has been welcoming Americans with open arms: that day, the last European country with border curbs in place lifted them officially, reinstating normality across the continent.

Whether it’s the Roman ruins of Plovdiv that caught your eye or it’s the charming views of Novi Sad’s from Petrovaradin Fortress that you bookmarked, you are no longer required to present a vaccination certificate or get tested prior to flying to any of the above destinations. All are welcome as visitors as it was back in 2019.

Europe may be tightening security beginning next year, but at this exact moment, braving the Old World and uncovering its hidden gems has never been easier.

With colder weather shortly setting in, travelers are eagerly planning their Caribbean escapes for this coming fall and winter. In order to make planning easier, Travel Off Path has gone through each Caribbean destination to see which are 100% restriction free for travelers. In short, this means travelers will not need to take tests, show proof of vaccine, or quarantine on arrival. All the countries listed below are open and operating like before the pandemic, making for the ultimate stress-free vacation.

Where Are Travelers Headed?

Montego Bay, Jamaica

Additionally, one of Jamaica’s tourist hotspots, Montego Bay, is regarded as the trendiest destination for 2022, and its airport is considered the best airport to fly into the Caribbean. Its vast selection of all-inclusive resorts also makes it a great destination to call home for a week or two this winter.

Cancun, Mexico

Cancun is another favorite for Americans traveling this fall and winter. Consequently, a recent report stated that Cancun ranks #1 for U.S. travelers this fall. In response, Cancun has added 38% (9.2 million total) more available airline seats than there were in 2019 in order to accommodate the surge in interest. Mexico was also one of the first destinations to remove all Covid requirements, and it seems to be paying off this year as travelers begin to get out there again after two years of restrictions.

A Word Of Caution

The worst days of the pandemic seem to be behind us, but that doesn’t mean these countries couldn’t change their policies. In fact, Germany recently announced that they would be reinstating their mask mandate for the winter. Always check travel requirements before heading off to your destination. Covid protocols, visa requirements, and other travel rules could all affect your trip, so it’s essential to double-check before heading to the airport.

Despite rising prices, travelers are still heading to Hawaii in droves. Perfect weather all year, unsurpassed natural beauty, and world-class beaches draw millions of visitors to Hawaii year after year. 2022 is no exception, and high costs do little to deter travelers from planning a trip to The Aloha State. Hotel rates are rising, and Hawaii tacks another 10.25% (13.25% in Honolulu) to the bill in the form of a transient accommodations tax.

Average nightly hotel rates are $390 per night, and Honolulu is 2.94% more expensive than New York City when rent isn’t factored in. Luckily, there are still affordable direct flights to this tropical paradise. Below are U.S. cities flying directly to Hawaii for under $250 this winter. The lowest fares were chosen between December 1st and February 28th, and all fares were found on August 30^th, 2022. Only fares with at least a free carry-on were considered. Unless otherwise specified, the days offering the best savings are Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

Waiting To Book Your Winter Getaway This Year Will Be Hard On Your Wallet

If you’re planning on going on a sunny break this January, you may want to set aside some money right away, as waiting to book until it’s winter may prove a bigger issue than it once was (especially if you’re on a budget amid the pandemic-led global recession).

Trust us when we say that, this year, winter travel will be a luxury many will not be able to afford unless they get ahead of the curve.

Traveling is getting increasingly expensive. Largely due to the ongoing economic crisis and high inflation, it is far more challenging for the average American to go on a vacation today, whether domestically or internationally, as the costs keep piling up. This is why, now more than ever, booking early is key to avoid paying exorbitant fees.

Here is what the most recent data show us:

The Cost Of Travel Continues To Rise Along With Inflation

According to respected deal-finder website Hopper, post-summer airfares will be 17% higher than they were in 2019. This number that may not sound too alarming, but it should not be underestimated, as it can surely affect the plans of budget travelers, particularly families, who will be paying $143 more on each ticket purchased throughout the season.

That is, of course, a rough estimate and most importantly, a nationwide average. As we have seen with New York lately, some cities will be feeling the sting harder than others: in the busy Eastern Coast hub, some international routes are up by as much as 62%, making it the most expensive U.S. city for air travel by a large margin.

Prices will continue oscillating throughout winter, and according to experts, those who are planning to travel during during the period are best advised to start looking for deals now. Scott Keyes from Scott’s Cheap Flights is one of those encouraging vacationers to ‘look ahead to those winter holiday flights’.

For Keyes, customers risk seeing further price hikes the longer they wait to book, especially when inflation, coupled with the overwhelming pent-up demand for travel, keeps causing the cost of travel to skyrocket. He then proceeded: ‘When are swimsuits on sale? In the winter. When are coats on sale? In the summer. It’s the same idea with winter holiday flights‘.

The Longer You Wait, The Harder It Will Be On Your Wallet

Furthermore, a joint study by CWT, a travel management company, and the Global Business Travel Association, travelers should expect airfares to continue on an upward trend for the remainder of 2022 and into 2023. This seems to corroborate other data suggesting travel will get steadily costlier in winter, following a brief reduction in the fall.

This new projection, which focuses mainly on business travel, but still offers an insight into air travel trends, estimates that 2022 will see a 48.5% increase in prices overall, compared to previous years. Additionally, 2023 will rise by 8.5%, totaling a staggering 57% for the post-Covid era compared to previous years.

In other dispiriting news, it’s not just more expensive tickets that need to be taken into account:

Hotel Fares Are 33% More Expensive In The US

Hotels and tourist accommodation in general will be another decisive factor. CWT is predicting hotel rates to be 18.5% more expensive this year, and another 8.2% in the next, for a combined 26.7%. To put it simply, those looking for rooms at the last minute will pay the highest possible rate due to the cumulative inflation.

In the popular winter hotspot of Miami, hotel stays already cost 55.6% more in April and May than they did compared to the same period in 2019, being the worst-affected domestic destination out of all the surveyed markets. In the wider U.S., a 33% uptick was noted. As assessed by the CWT, ‘the cost of labor, food and beverage, and energy are all going to drive hotel rates up‘.

So yes: if you’re dreaming of that beautiful all-inclusive in early January, or simply making plans to visit family over Christmas now that most social restrictions have been axed, you better make a reservation immediately.
