Move aside, Barcelona. A lesser-known city in Spain many visitors are not even aware exists has peaked at number one on this year’s Expat City Ranking, published by the Expat Insider. In general, foreign residents have praised how easy it is to settle in and the excellent quality of life, with over 85% of them feeling ‘happy’ about the move.

Proving migration trends have reversed, a record number of Americans are leaving the U.S. in recent years as the political situation deteriorates and inflation takes its heavy toll on families. One of the most stable and peaceful regions with a high human development index, Europe remains the go-to destination for many.

In particular, this one hidden gem on the sunny coast of Spain:

Valencia Is The Top Rated City For Expats This Year

Out of 50 popular destinations worldwide, Valencia was named the top city for migrants in 2022. With a surprisingly high ‘happiness level’, higher than any other metropolis in Spain, including the economic powerhouse duo Madrid and Barcelona, the Expat Insider report confirms the vast majority of foreigners, including Americans, feel right at home here.

This is rather unusual, seeing that Valencia is a big city home to over 1.6 million people, and large urban centers tend to scare expats away, but it seems not all of them are looking for some peace and quiet. Valencia is a 2022 highlight not only in the overall ranking but numerous other subcategories, including the Quality of Life Index.

Migrants strongly approve of the city’s infrastructure, especially when it comes to Travel & Transit, where it ranks 3rd for affordability and efficacy. 85% of residents consider public transportation ‘affordable’, compared to the worldwide mean value of 70%. It excels again in the ‘Ease of Settling In Index’, perhaps one of the most relevant:

In total, 74% of expats feel welcome in the area versus 62% globally; in this respect, only the digital nomad hub of Mexico City outperforms Valencia (82%). Additionally, 85% perceive Valencians as very friendly, and 72% are ‘happy with their social life’, against worldwide averages of 66% and 56%, respectively.

Valencia Is More Affordable Than Other Cities In Spain

When it comes to the cost of living, it charts at number 1, with 83% rating it positively. Other domestic competitors like Barcelona and Madrid saw rates of 54% and 69%, respectively. To an extent, Valencia enters at number three in the Personal Finance Index: 67% of respondents are happy financially (versus 60% in the global ranking).

A further 38% are ‘completely’ satisfied (worldwide, the figure is much lower at 22%). Finally, 92% of expats living in Valencia, irrespective of nationality, consider it a safe environment. Other relevant rankings include:

- Affordable Healthcare (2nd)
- Health & Well-Being (4th)
- Easy Access to Medical Services (7th)
In spite of the laudable results – for the most part – Valencia has had a mixed reaction in the ‘Expat Essentials Index’, where it charts at a moderate number 13. Foreigners complain the most about bureaucracy, one of Europe’s biggest weaknesses (52% vs. 39% globally), and career prospects (30% hold an unfavorable view of the local market).

However, this number may be interpreted as an over-estimation, as Expat Insider editors reiterate only 8% of those surveyed have settled in Valencia for ‘work-related reasons’, resulting in a markedly different expat profile: ‘quality of life’ and a better retirement prospect are the ‘most popular reasons’ for migration.

If you’re a young digital nomad looking for a daily dose of sunshine and culture, chances are you’ll love Valencia as much as retirees do. As the third largest city in Spain, sitting on the Mediterranean coast, it has no shortage of attractions, from world-class museums to sandy beaches and a vibrant nightlife.

After being canceled for the past 2 years, the 2023 celebration will take place from February 17 – February 25 at venues throughout the city and will feature samba music and dancers, the famous Samba Parade, and epic parties.

The Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain

The Carnival of Santa Cruz takes place in Tenerife, the largest of Spain’s Canary Islands, and attracts 200,000 spectators. The 2023 celebration will have events taking place between January 20 – February 26 with the theme of “New York – The City That Never Sleeps.”

One of the most popular events is the gala to elect the Carnival Queen, where contestants dawn flamboyant costumes in an attempt to win the crown. On “Carnival Tuesday,” a magnificent parade takes place throughout the streets before marking the official end of the ceremony when the spirit of Carnival, symbolized by a sardine, is paraded throughout the streets before ultimately being set on fire.

Venice Carnival, Italy

Venice’s famous Carnival celebration has been around since at least 1296 and will take place from February 4 – February 21, 2023. Each year the event hosts a boat parade and light show on the Rio di Cannaregio canal. The 10-day celebration plays host to several masquerade balls where attendees wear period costumes and dawn fancy masks.

Up until then, the capital was Istanbul (known as Constantinople preceding the transfer), a cross-continental behemoth sitting on both sides of the Bosphorus Strait, a narrow strip of water dividing the European and Asian continents. We love Istanbul, and there’s certainly no shortage of History and incredible landmarks to be found there.

It isn’t the only cosmopolitan gem in the Turkish state, though, and there’s no denying its successor Ankara has a lot going for it. In London, for instance, the average price for renting a one-bedroom flat for six months was U.S. $12,907, and that’s excluding other important factors such as good location. In the English metropolis, the closer you are to the central belt, the more prohibitively expensive, and not necessarily better equipped, accommodation gets.

In other words, it is exactly U.S. $10,478 more expensive to live in London than in Ankara. Other competing European capitals like Paris and Madrid did not feature, as didn’t Mexico’s Tulum, where taxi fares are higher than Manhattan, or the wellness-driven Thailand, which now promotes ‘premium’ experiences as opposed to backpacking adventures.

Notoriously, the list is dominated by Eastern Europe and two of Latin America’s trendiest destinations, Chile and Colombia. Having launched its DNV recently, Colombia has made it easy for foreigners to apply by lowering the financial threshold and doing away with excessive bureaucracy, a move not replicated by Europe.

KLM Has 167 Worldwide Routes This Summer, With 12 Direct Flights From The U.S.

The carrier will be serving a new route to Austin, Texas; and daily flights to Atlanta, Washington, New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco

The Dutch airline, KLM, announced in a press release that it will be serving 167 destinations during summer 2022, between March 27 and October 29.

The carrier will offer customers flights to 96 European cities and 71 intercontinental destinations, 12 direct flights to the United States, and a total of 16 million seats.

KLM is responding to travelers’ demands and is expanding its capacity to almost the same level it had in 2019 before the pandemic started. The new destinations added to its network —like Belgrade, Dubrovnik, and Palma de Mallorca— have been very successful routes and the company expects even more reservations to more destinations during summer.

The carrier has also made policy changes to satisfy customers’ needs. On March 23, KLM stopped requesting passengers to wear masks and joined other carriers who dropped this covid restriction. Customers flying with KLM, and taking advantage of the 167 routes the company will serve this summer, can travel with more comfort without face coverings.

KLM’s Network Expansion

Flight frequency to the Caribbean and the United States has increased. The carrier added Austin, Texas, to their network and will operate daily flights to Caribbean destinations like Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao.

The Dutch airline also mentioned that their customers are interested in Asia, for destinations like the Philippines, Thailand, Singapore, and Bali. The carrier has considered countries that have eased travel restrictions or that will soon, like India.

Other countries with strict travel restrictions, like China, are not included in their new network expansion. KLM also clarified that due to the European Union sanctions to Russia, they will not fly in Russian Airspace, and that customers must consider that flights to destinations like Japan, China, or South Korea will take two hours more and will include a stop in Seoul.

Most routes to South America have been restored to similar levels as before the pandemic. The carrier offers daily flights to Sao Paulo, Panama City, and Lima, and frequent flights to Quito, Bogotá, Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, and Santiago.

Africa is also part of KLM’s expansion, during summer the carrier will serve 10 destinations: Zanzibar, Johannesburg, Cape Town, Accra, Lagos, Kigali, Entebbe, Nairobi, Kilimanjaro, and Dar es Salaam.

KLM Flights To The US

Since November, after the United States eased travel restrictions for Europeans, KLM has reported steady growth, and their services this summer will match the ones provided in 2019.

The Dutch airline has added a new destination to the US, Austin, the state capital of Texas. They consider this destination to be “a flourishing technology hub and home to a large number of technology companies” and expect high demand for business flights in the new future.

According to the details shared on the site Aviacionline, these are the direct flights KLM has scheduled from Amsterdam to the US:
- Atlanta: daily flights.
- Austin: three times per week.
- Boston: four times per week.
- Washington Dulles: daily flights.
- Houston: six times per week.
- New York: 19 times per week.
- Las Vegas: five times per week.
- Los Angeles: 13 times per week.
- Minneapolis: four times per week.
- Chicago O’ Hare: six times per week.
- San Francisco: 10 times per week.
- Salt Lake City: three times per week.
The fleet allocated for these routes includes different models like the Airbus A330-300, Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, and the Boeing 777-200ER/787-10 Dreamliner.

KLM is currently offering customers special deals on their official website to attract more passengers. Travelers can buy tickets from New York to Amsterdam for $660, from Los Angeles to Billund for $525, from New York to Aalborg for $532, or from San Francisco to Amsterdam for $635, taxes included. Flight offers are time-sensitive and might vary depending on availability or location.
