New York Is The Most Expensive U.S. City For Air Travel Right Now

Flight costs have soared through the roof since the world reopened for tourism. In the U.S., a pent-up travel demand has pushed prices up the highest, with the airfare inflation being attributed to a handful of destinations only. One of them is New York, named by TravelPerk the most expensive city for air travel right now.

The data compiled by the travel management company proves that the issues facing the aviation sector at present are not merely operational, or exclusively related to staffing shortages. These can also be traced back to fuel costs and the global economic recession, that is making flying increasingly expensive, particularly at major airports.

Fares For Some New York Routes Are Up By As Much As 62 Per Cent

According to TravelPerk, travel costs in the Eastern U.S. have ‘increased the most’ in the second quarter, being the highest within the States, and on an extent, among the main global destinations. More specifically, the city of New York occupies the entire top three for most expensive airfares during the April 1st-June 30th period.

To put it simply, flying into and out of New York has never been costlier, whether it’s domestic or international routes. Fares for the ever-busy New York-Paris route has registered a staggering 62 per cent increase, the steepest rise on the list, while New York-Amsterdam is up a more moderate 36 per cent compared to the first quarter.

Domestically, flights from New York to San Francisco on the West Coast ‘nearly doubled’, indicating affordable air travel is seriously under threat, in Europe and beyond, for as long as the worldwide economic upheaval continues. The dire prospect has led even United to directly call out the American Government on their foreign policy strategy.

Namely, the country’s dependence on foreign oil, which has done Americans no favor after Russia started a violent campaign against its neighbor Ukraine, seriously disrupting the global supply chains. After all, Russia is the second largest oil producer, and the sanctions enacted against it have forced countries to seek alternatives elsewhere – at a cost.

August And September May Be The Best Months To Visit New York

Commenting on the data, TravelPerk Chief Revenue Officer JC Taunay-Bucalo confirmed inflated airfares in locations such as New York are directly linked to ‘increased fuel costs, a shortage of labor and disruptions to the global economy’. In more dispiriting news, Taunay-Bucalo expects this upward trend to remain for the rest of the year.

Comparatively, there may be some ‘relief’ for travelers who were unable to fly during the summer due to the prohibitive costs. Amid the oscillating prices, August and September may actually be the best months to travel, when fares should drop significantly, albeit temporarily, ahead of new hikes forecast for November and December.

Expensive tickets are not the only thing making vacationers reconsider New York as their destination, or even a connecting hub: TravelPerk has found that accommodation in the city has ‘some of the highest levels of inflation‘ for the second yearly quarter, at 49 per cent. On the bright side, it doesn’t beat Chicago, up 77 per cent, or even Boston, up 63 per cent.

This is still no consolation, seeing that these ‘modest’ hotel fares are coupled with cripplingly overpriced flights. Some other international routes where pronounced rates were observed include Berlin-London (43 per cent), London-Berlin (42 per cent), London-New York (35 per cent), and Sao Paulo-Amsterdam (28 per cent).

Interestingly, San Francisco, one of the Western U.S.’s busiest airports, has not been hit as hard. Hotels in the city have seen a 22 per cent increase in hotel costs, besides having the ‘lower’ airfare inflation rates, quarter-over-quarter, in stark contrast with New York’s towering figures. In fact, San Francisco flights to London are down 4 per cent.

As air travel becomes marred by exorbitant costs and widespread disruption, passengers may want to consider other (somewhat) cheaper means of transport, including the railway. Luckily for you, on this article, we have already rounded up five of the most incredible train journeys in North America, including the scenic New York to Chicago Cardinal Train.

The competition for budget transatlantic travel is increasing, and travelers are benefitting the most.

Norse Atlantic Airways—a new start-up company offering budget flights between Europe and the U.S.—have announced they will begin budget daily flights between New York City‘s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and London‘s Gatwick Airport (LGW).

The service will start on August 12, 2012, with $322 introductory fares for round trips. Anyone who’s ever traveled across the pond will know this is excellent value for money. In addition, one-way flights to London are as cheap as $116!

Norse Atlantic Airways will join Play Airlines in attempting to dominate budget travel over the Atlantic Ocean.

The New Flights Between NYC and London

    • The new flight route will depart from London at 1 p.m and arrive in New York at 3.55 p.m the same day (local time.)
    • The flight from New York will depart at 5.55 p.m and arrive in London at 6.20 a.m the next day (local time.)

All flights in London will arrive at London Gatwick Airport (LGW.) Traveling into Central London from London Gatwick Airport is very straightforward.

Although the airport is situated 29.5 miles south of Central London, the train will bring travelers to Victoria Station in Central London in under 30 minutes.

Other London airports include London Heathrow, London Stansted, and London Luton. You may fly to these airports with other airlines.

London is the best city in Europe for finding connecting flights to Mainland European destinations.

All flights arriving and departing from NYC will land at JFK airport

Norse Atlantic Airways has the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner in a two-class configuration, including an economy class and a premium class with a 3-3-3 setup. Like other budget airlines, Norse Atlantic Airways will charge extra for seat selection, carry-on bags, and meals at the cheapest fares.

However, the fares still work out cheap for American and European travelers, especially if they pack light.

In addition to the NYC to London route, Norse Atlantic Airways will offer a limited-time service from August to late October between London Gatwick Airport and Oslo Airport, Gardermoen (OSL).

    What Has The Airline Said?

Bjorn Tore Larsen, CEO of Norse Atlantic Airways, said: “We are very pleased to now be able to welcome customers looking to book great value flights between London Gatwick and New York JFK. Customers now have an affordable option allowing them to book a last-minute trip or a holiday of a lifetime with an airline that offers choice and flexibility.

“The introduction of affordable Norse Atlantic Airways point-to-point flights between Europe and the United States will benefit both local tourism and businesses. Not only are we directly investing in the countries that we operate by employing local staff but also supporting job creation across the wider tourism and service industry.”

Stewart Wingate, CEO of Gatwick Airport, said: “We are delighted to welcome Norse Atlantic Airways to Gatwick. It’s always great to see a new tail on the airfield but the arrival of a new airline following the turbulent past two years for the industry, and one that will be offering fantastic long-haul routes across the Atlantic, is particularly exciting news.

“Passengers across London and the South East will now be able to benefit from another transatlantic service from Gatwick, with Norse offering excellent value for money for those flying out for a dream holiday, or important business trip, to New York, one of the world’s most famous and dynamic cities.”

    Final Thoughts

It’s excellent news for Americans and Europeans. The emergence of budget flights between the United Kingdom and the United States will boost travel numbers, increase affordability, and connect the two continents more.

It makes London and Europe an even better destination in August.

  • New Flights From New York To Paris Launched

New Flights From New York To Paris Launched

    Last Updated

New flights have been announced that will further connect New York with the French capital, Paris. The City of Lights has long since been a popular destination for travelers from the United States, with millions jetting off to Paris each year to enjoy all that the fashion and romance capital has to offer. Thanks to the announcement of new flights services this week, getting there is set to get much easier for travelers.

It’s been a good few months for travelers with an eye on traveling further afield, with scores of new routes added between the United States and Europe, and this latest addition is bound to be a hit. Here’s everything you need to know about the new flight services between the two cities, including which airline it is, how frequent the flights will be plus a recap of France’s current entry requirements.

New York To Paris Flights – Information for Travelers

Prior to the pandemic, Paris was one of the most popular destinations in the world, coming third to Bangkok and London when analyzing which cities welcomed the most travelers. A significant proportion of Paris’ arrivals are from the United States, with 6.2 million Americans taking the short hop across the Atlantic to take in sights such as the Eiffel Tower, Nôtre-Dame Cathedral and Disneyland Paris.

Yet whilst the pandemic may have reduced traveler numbers, it has hardly dampened attitudes towards travel, with Paris once more seen as a top destination this summer. As a result, Air France are teaming up with their fellow SkyTeam alliance member Delta to provide 9 daily flights between New York and Paris, giving travelers a wealth of options when it comes to travel between the two travel hotspots.

The flights will be between New York City’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Charles de Gaulle International Airport (CDG) in Paris. Flights are set to leave Charles-de-Gaulle at 8:30, 10:30, 11:30, 13:30, 14:30, 16:30, 18:30 and 19:30. Flights from JFK will take place in the afternoon onwards, with departures slated for 16:30, 17:30, 18:30, 19:30, 21:00, 22:00, 23:00 and 23:55.

Both airlines are using widebody jetliners for the routes, which – if full – could see more than 2,500 passengers pass between the two cities in a single day. Whilst Delta will be utilizing its Airbus A330 aircraft for the flights to Paris, those heading back to New York with Air France will be on Boeing 777-300 jets. Each flight will be available in at least three different classes, such as economy, premium economy and business class.

In order to enter France at present, vaccinated travelers must provide proof of vaccination but do not need to take a test beforehand. Unvaccinated travelers must provide a negative PCR test result taken within 72 hours or an antigen test result taken within 48 hours pre-departure. Fortunately for travelers, France has removed its vaccine passport requirements, and has dropped its mask mandates in most situations – public transport and at a business’ discretion aside.

exterior of the famous Cafe de Flore in Paris, France

Whilst it may be more accessible now thanks to this increased connectivity, travel to Paris is set to cost travelers a fair chunk of change. Notorious for being an expensive destination to begin with, travelers will also have to contend with sky-high flight tickets and record hotel prices in Europe when booking their trips to the city. Fortunately for Americans, the strength of the dollar against the Euro should help to soften any financial outlay.
