Americans Can Fly Nonstop To These 5 Destinations In Spain This Fall

The appeal of Europe for American travelers shows no signs of abating, but instead of spending time in France or Italy, there’s a new hot spot in town!

Research from the Olive Press has found that the number of U.S. tourists visiting Spain is higher than ever.

I’ll admit, I love Spain!

In fact, a year I haven’t spent some time in the country is a very bad year. And it seems like a huge number of American travelers agree with me.

American visitors to Spain are up by 15% compared to last year, and the country welcomed more than 2 million U.S. visitors in the first half of the year.

As well as being a beautiful and culturally rich country to visit year-round, getting to Spain is also wonderfully convenient! Americans can fly nonstop to these 5 destinations in Spain this fall:

Air Connections Between The U.S. And Spain

In recent years, the air connections between the U.S. and Spain have increased considerably, which explains why travel between the two countries has surged in popularity so fast.

This fall, U.S. travelers can fly nonstop to Barcelona, Madrid, Tenerife, Malaga, and Palma.

Barcelona

Barcelona is the second-largest city in Spain, and this October, you can fly to this culture-rich hot spot from 9 different U.S. cities:
- Miami
- Chicago
- New York
- San Francisco
- Boston
- Atlanta
- Philadelphia
- Washington D.C.
- Los Angeles
The 2 cheapest departure points, at the time of writing, are Miami and Chicago.

Flying out on October 20-October 25 with Iberia Air (a well-known Spanish carrier) will cost $582 per person for an economy class round trip. The outbound flight time for this route is 9 h 50 and the inbound flight time is 9 h 25.

Barcelona is a fascinating city best visited in the fall.

It’s still warm enough to sit outside in street cafes, eating tapas and watching the world go by, but the crowds are much lower.

The works of Gaudi are the highlight of Barcelona for me. These include the city’s most famous attraction, the unfinished Sagrada Familia cathedral.

Book tickets in advance because this is almost always busy! Tickets cost 26 euros ($29) per person and are available here.

Then go to the incredible, vibrant, Park Guell, better known as Gaudi Park. Its full of whimsical mosaics, sculptures, and awe-inspiring architecture. It’s one of my favorite spots in all of Barcelona.

Madrid

Barcelona is perhaps the best-known city in Spain among tourists, but Madrid is actually the nation’s capital.

In October U.S. travelers can fly to Madrid nonstop from New York, Boston, Washington D.C, Miami, Chicago, Dallas, Charlotte, Philidelphia, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Atlanta.

In October the 2 cheapest cities to fly from are New York and Boston.

Looking to New York for our example flights, you can fly nonstop from New York to Madrid in economy class from October 9 to October 16 for $486.

This flight is operated by American Airlines.

The outbound flight time is 7 hours 15 minutes and the inbound flight time is 8 hours 15 minutes.

Madrid has a rich cultural heritage and some of the main, must-visit attractions in the city include the Prado Museum and the Royal Palace, which is the largest palace in Europe.

When you’re ready to relax, go and sit in the Puerta del Sol.

This public square is bursting with life, a great place for people-watching and experiencing what life in Madrid really feels like.

Tenerife

Tenerife is the largest and most populated of the Canary Islands. This is an island chain that is owned by Spain but actually located closer to Africa.

The Canary Islands are around 100 km off the coast of Morocco.

You can now fly nonstop to Tenerife from New York, which is the first direct route from the U.S. to the island.

The cheapest dates to fly to Tenerife in October are from 17-25. A round-trip economy class flight on these dates would set you back $694.

This flight is operated by United Airlines with an outbound flight time of 7 hours 5 minutes and an inbound flight time of 7 hours 55 minutes.

I’ve written before about why the Canary Islands are one of my favorite destinations in Europe, especially in fall and winter.

They boast year-round sunshine, and Tenerife has a fascinating, almost otherworldly volcanic landscape while still having some of the most beautiful European beaches.

The great thing about the Canary Islands is how well connected they are: you can fly into Tenerife then use the inter island ferries to explore all of the islands in the chain.

Malaga

New Yorkers are blessed with flight options if they want a getaway to Spain.

As well as having the only direct route between the U.S. and Tenerife, New York also boasts the only nonstop route between the U.S. and Malaga.

This routes stop operating for the season at the of September, so this is an ideal option for an early fall getaway. To travel from September 18 to September 25 with United Airlines will cost $859.

The outbound flight time is 7 hours 40 minutes, and the inbound flight time is 8 hours 35 minutes.

Malaga is a great place to visit in fall if you’re looking for uncrowded beaches, with the most famous beach here being La Malagueta.

Picasso was born in Malaga, and the city is incredibly proud of its famous son.

The house where he was born has been turned into a small, but genuinely fascinating, museum which also contains some of his works. It’s so interesting that I’ve visited it twice!

Tickets are 12 euros ($13) per person.

Palma

The third in our trio of Spanish flights for New Yorkers departs from New York to Palma on the beautiful Balearic island of Majorca.

These flights might be nonstop, but they aren’t cheap!

The cheapest option I could find departs on September 20 and returns on September 25 at a whopping cost of $2,183.

These flights are with Lufthansa and the outbound flight time is 8 hours 5 minutes while the inbound flight time is 9 hours 10 minutes.

Majorca is my favorite of the Balearic islands. The 3 main and most popular Balearic islands are Majorca, Menorca, and Ibiza.

During the summer months, Majorca can be overwhelmingly crowded, so late September is my favorite time to visit the island.

The beaches are breathtaking and the sun is still shining, but you don’t have to share it with half of Europe!

Other notable attractions in Palma include the iconic Cathedral of Santa Maria.

This is a skyline-dominating gothic masterpiece, and entrance is free of charge (to help balance out the eye watering cost of your airfare!)

When you think of the ideal vacation, what comes to mind? Europe, the beach, a ski trip, camping… something else?

Whatever comes to mind, a common theme most of us share when planning a getaway is that we want it to be easy. We stress enough in our normal lives, so why should we stress on vacation?

Well imagine stepping off a plane and into a tropical paradise just an hour later.

No long-haul flights, no customs lines, no jet lag. Just the warm sun, the gentle breeze, and the crystal-clear waters of the Florida Keys.

This isn’t just a dream; it’s the reality that awaits at Playa Largo Resort in Key Largo.

Back Again and Again

The first time I took a trip to the Keys was another lifetime ago when I was about 12. We road-tripped all the way to Key West from Louisville, Kentucky.

I remember loving every second, and I’ve been back several times since! The most pleasant things in life are worth endlessly repeating, and The Keys are no exception.

Last year was another road trip, but this year I had the great pleasure of checking out Playa Largo.

And let me tell you, it did not disappoint!

This was my favorite shot I took of Playa Largo. It shows two of my favorite parts: the pool and the overwater cabanas. Pics like these make me glad I bought a drone!

While I like to see different sections of The Keys each time I go, I’ll be tempted to simply book a week at Playa Largo next time.

Why, you ask?

I have 5 main reasons…

1) Easy, Breezy, Beautiful… Playa Largo

Sometimes, the best things in life are the hardest to attain. Advanced degrees, chiseled abs, fancy cars… you get my point.

But sometimes, the best things are ridiculously easy, like a Playa Largo getaway!

Not only do you not need a passport to visit this gorgeous property, but you’ll be spoiled for flight options since Miami is so well connected (there are 80+ direct connections in the U.S.).

Once you land, Playa Largo is only about an hour away by car.

Talk about easy to reach!

2) Luxury Redefined, Nature Inspired

Sounds pretty buzzwordy right? Still, I mean it!

Playa Largo felt luxurious in a different way than most resorts, and that’s partly because of how much they went out of their way to preserve the natural environment when building the property.

I stayed in one of the Bungalows, and every time I walked to my room, I felt like I was walking on a gorgeous wooded path in the jungle.

But don’t let the ‘isolation’ fool you. While I felt worlds away in my room, I was only ever steps away from the beach, the pool, the amazing restaurants, and the gym.
I had the world at my fingertips while feeling like I had the whole resort to myself.

The Bungalows have 2 levels, and a full service kitchen. It really feels like you are in your own little home during your stay.

Best of all, when you stay in a Bungalow, you get breakfast brought to your room every day!

Talk about luxury… I didn’t need anything more than a robe to get my breakfast and coffee each morning.

Here were some of the top things I loved about staying in a Bungalow at Playa Largo:

Daily breakfast: Wake up, don your robe, walk to your front door… breakfast awaits!

Full kitchen: While I didn’t take advantage on this trip, I typically like to cook a few meals for myself when traveling, making this room perfect.

HUGE Master Suite: You know how I said the Bungalow was 2 floors? Well, the top one is the Master, the whole floor! Nothing screams luxury like a massive room with an equally massive master bath.

Giant Tub: I literally never take a bath at home, but when in Rome… anytime I stay somewhere with an amazing looking tub I have to try it out, and Playa Largo takes the cake! The tub even had a little tray with everything you need to make for a relaxing time in the tub.

Privacy: The second I reached my “Room” (it’s really more of a house if we’re honest), I felt like I had total privacy. Even drinking coffee on my balcony in the mornings felt private since I was surrounded by trees.

3) Adventure Awaits, Relaxation Beckons

I don’t know what your typical vacation looks like, but I prefer to have a bit of it all. I like adventure, and I like relaxing.

I want to be able to get my heart pumping if the mood strikes and to tune out and turn my brain off too.

This was easy at Playa Largo, and part of the reason I’m keen to head back.

One of my favorite parts of the property, which made for a relaxing time, was the floating cabanas. We had a cabana reserved for the afternoon and took full advantage!

When you book one, you get a cooler with some drinks already picked out, a Bluetooth speaker, and full service as if you are at a restaurant, meaning you can even order your lunch out to the cabana.

I loved being able to have my feet in the water while floating on the ocean and eating lunch in the shade.

Good music, good company, good drinks… all on the water!

Another highlight of my stay was Playa Largo’s Eventide, a celebration of the shift from day to night.

Think live music, special drinks, and fun activities! One of my favorite parts of the ceremony was a table where you could write something you were stressed or worried about on a piece of paper, and then you toss it into a firepit that gets lit and pulled out into the water.

I’d tell you what I wrote, but I don’t want to bring the worries back 😂.

Some of my other favorite activities (both adventurous and relaxing) included:

Sound Bathing Meditation: We enjoyed a guided meditation on the beach with singing bowls. It was the perfect way to start the day, and really set the tone for a day of relaxation. For those seeking a wellness getaway, you’re in luck! Playa Largo is hosting ReFLEXions September 13-15 which will have wellness classes, spa experiences, and motivational sessions to achieve the reset so many of us need!

Snorkel Trip: Playa Largo has a catamaran right on site operated by Caribbean Watersports, so it was super easy for us to go out for a snorkel session! I love any excuse to get underwater, and this was one of my favorite activities of the trip.

Massage: What more is there to say? You can never go wrong with a massage! I went with the Ocean Spa Signature Fusion Massage and practically melted into the table. As a daily laptop user, it was amazing to have a week of respite from my constant neck pain after such a great massage.

I couldn’t not snap a pic with these! Very cool experience.

4) Culinary Journeys, No Passport Required

Just saying it again… you don’t need a passport or long flights to enjoy amazing destinations!

And you certainly don’t need one to enjoy the incredible food on offer at Playa Largo.

I could write a whole article about the amazing food here, and I’m getting hungry typing this out…

My favorite dining experience was definitely the Evening Water Table (check it out here).

Something about walking into the water to sit at your dinner table made the whole experience that much more special.

While the sun set behind us, we enjoyed cocktails and appetizers before ordering our mains. If it’s something you like, I highly recommend the Pork Belly Chicharron.

Be sure to dress for the occasion! I accidentally wore pants that were difficult to roll up and ended up getting them a bit wet. WORTH IT!

Plus, the Bungalows had a washer and dryer, so it was a non-issue.

To top it all off, the experience comes with a mini Polaroid camera to capture the moment so you can take it with you when you are done.

One thing that really stuck out about Playa Largo was how attentive they were in making sure you walked away with memories of your stay.

Staff were quick to offer to snap pictures for you, and even quicker to make sure you were always having the best time.

Wine and S’mores are a surprisingly good mix!

A few more of my favorite culinary delights were:

Tropical Mixology Class: The very first night at Playa Largo, we jumped right into a mixology class with the head bartender, and it kicked off a new hobby! I had so much fun that making cocktails has become a weekly adventure. I still make the Hemingway Daquiri a lot (a Playa Largo fave), and have the ingredients on hand at all times!

Summer Nights Chimenea: After our water dining experience, we capped off the night by making s’mores and sipping on delicious wine around a few Chimeneas. It was a great opportunity to chat around the fires while enjoying some delicious treats!

5) Key Largo’s Charms At Your Doorstep

Finally, don’t forget to leave the property (even though you may not want to!). Key Largo and nearby Islamorada have plenty to explore.

Grab a bite at the world-famous Fish House or head to Islamorada to visit the Florida Keys Brewing Company.

We toured the brewery last year and loved spending an evening there. The beer is great and the vibes are off the charts.

Live music, local artists, and psychedelic décor await!

If you have the chance and you are certified, Key Largo also has fantastic diving. It’s easy diving, as pretty much anywhere you go in the Keys is going to be shallow.

The best way to try out a few beers is to order a flight. The darker one was my fave!

Just $1, Eh? Lesser Known Airline Offering Super Cheap Flights To Canada’s Prettiest Fall Destinations

While most Americans splurge on vacations to our southern compadres, our northern neighbors are enticing us to visit on the cheap!

Some Canadian budget airlines have met their maple…I mean maker…lately, but lesser known Flair Airlines is one of the last true low-cost carriers standing.

And with $1 flights, how could they be beat?

If you thought U.S. budget airlines have been riding the struggle bus, think again.

Lynx and Canada Jetlines couldn’t pay the bills any more and Swoop was bought out by much more popular WestJet, leaving only Flair and Air Canada’s Rouge.

As for Edmonton-based Flair, they fly to some really cool places across Canada, Mexico, and the U.S., where 2 lucky American cities can score incredibly cheap deals to Canada’s prettiest fall destinations.

$1 Nonstop Flights From Las Vegas (LAS)

You can’t buy much for a buck anymore, but you can buy a flight this Canada this fall.

And before you ask, “what’s the catch?”, there are none, except to say death and taxes can’t be escaped up north either.

Full transparency: all the $1 flights are non-refundable and will cost you between $16 – $39 including fees and taxes, but do not include any add-ons, such as seat selection and luggage.

Although, like America’s budget airlines, the lowest class allows for a free ‘personal bag‘ no bigger than 6 x 13 x 17 (inches) and weighing no more than 15.5 lbs.

Flair is offering cheap flights from Las Vegas to 2 awesome Canadian cities just in time to see a colorful shift in the treetops.

First up is Calgary (YYC), where $1 base fares are valid on September 13th and September 20th.

Explore this vastly underrated city overshadowed by Vancouver and Toronto and a gateway into one of North America’s most stunning mountain destinations, Banff.

Some might say Calgary is the ‘Denver of Canada’, a fun, thriving city nestled in the majestic Rockies.

Banff is only an hour and a half away for a more quaint, immersive mountain town and an excellent choice for fall foliage photo-ops.

Second is Edmonton (YEG), another overlooked Canadian city unless you’re an avid hockey fan. Book $1 flights for September 17th and 19th for an outdoor lover’s haven popular for hiking, cycling, and kayaking.

And one attraction that may surprise you is the West Edmonton Mall, the largest shopping center in North America, bruising the Mall of America’s ego.

$1 Nonstop Flights From Orlando (MCO)

Orlando is one-upping Las Vegas, seeing $1 flights to 3 underrated Canadian cities. And I’ll be honest up front -you possibly haven’t heard of any of them.

But let’s start with the one that stands out the most as an alternative airport to Toronto, a city you’ve definitely heard of!

Flights to Kitchener-Waterloo (YKF), roughly an hour drive from downtown Toronto, are worth taking for a bit of extra road time.

$1 base fares are available November 2nd and November 5th, where fall colors should be in full bloom in Canada’s top cosmopolitan city.

What may be most impressive, and should be snatched up right away, is the fact Flair is offering $1 fares the week of Christmas which almost never happens with any airline.

Typically, airfares spike through the roof on major holidays, so if you’re up for a winter trip into Canada’s lesser known, take advantage of flights from Orlando to:
- London (YXU) – December 20th and 23rd
- St. John’s (YSJ) – December 22nd
More On Flair

Not that there are any immediate bankruptcy concerns, but travelers may want to know Flair has struggled financially.

Let’s just say travel insurance is always a wise idea even for the most profitable airlines, especially when traveling internationally.

Flair Airlines is a true budget airline through and through, offering dirt cheap airfare and nickel and diming everything else.

Make sure to know your allowable luggage before checking in as fees at the gate become doubled and even nearly tripled at the gate.

Low-cost airlines are typically bare-bones and no-frills, so expect to pay up for refreshments and seats, but random allocation is free.

Just remember you paid $1, but safety is not a concern as AirlineRatings recognized Flair as a top budget airline.

Unveiling Paradise: This Latin American Gem Sets New Tourist Arrival Record

When you think of Latin America, it’s probably tourism giants like Mexico, Argentina and Colombia that come to mind, and that’s only understandable:

Between one’s luxurious Caribbean resorts and ancient Mayan sites and the others’ charming colonial cities and delectable street food, they’re often a first-time visitor’s preferred pick when planning a trip to the Global South, and they’re undoubtedly extremely popular.

That being said, there’s been renewed interest in what’s the historically-overlooked central part of LatAm, stereotypically known for being a no man’s land full of unmapped and marred with underdevelopment––but to which extent is all of that true?

And if so, why is Costa Rica of all places breaking its own all-time arrival record and positioning itself among the key players in the subcontinent’s market?

On Costa Rica’s Popularity Rise

A name you’re likely to have come across at some point in your Instagram feed or travel searches, Costa Rica is a small, transitory country in Central America boasting a vast biodiversity and naturally Rich Coastlines––pun intended, and yes, in the plural:

Not only is a quarter of its landmass comprised of protected greenery, making the country a sanctuary for wildlife, it offers access to both the Caribbean and Pacific Coasts, with up-and-coming resort towns and crowd-free beaches galore.

For the first half of 2024, tourism in Costa Rica soared, already registering a 14.5% increase year-on-year, and it’s likely to grow further, especially with the abundance of cheap flights traveling to San Jose––roundtrip flights from Miami starting from a shockingly cheap $232.

According to Tourism Minister William Rodriguez, 92% of visitors to Costa Rica arrive by air, mainly from the U.S. and Canada, and this year, the number of U.S. vacationers, in particular, has increased by 18% compared to the same period in 2023.

At this rate, it looks set for a record-breaking 2024.

The question is, what is it about this lesser-known Latin gem that has got them so hooked?

This Is What Makes Costa Rica Actually Great

Costa Rica’s main attraction is its thriving nature, which is probably one of the most diverse in Latin America, despite the country’s less-advantageous size: other than the honey-colored beaches, we’re talking volcanoes, cloud and rainforests, and lake-dotted provinces.

It plays host to a number of LatAm’s most magnificent natural landmarks, including La Fortuna Waterfall, a vertiginous, fast-flowing drop emptying into shallow, swim-friendly pools and surrounded by lush scenery.

The waterfall is already worth flying all the way to Costa Rica to see, but wait until you see the trail that leads you there, with the towering trees, chirping of rare birds, and even the occasional sighting of endangered spider monkeys.

At the foot of the majestic Arenal Volcano, Mistico Arenal is yet another national park you can’t miss during an excursion to Costa Rica, mainly for the scenic freshwater lake and the iconic hanging bridges you will find here.

Nearby, also boasting views of the volcano, Monteverde has a 1.3-mile long trail lapping around a cloud forest, and if you’re keen on escaping into nature for longer than a day, Tortuguero is the perfect spot to base yourself:

This large eco-reserve is located in the heart of the jungle, and according to Booking.com, there are at least 22 accommodation options, ranging from cheap hostels to pricier four-star hotels.

As for the park itself, it provides guided wildlife sighting tours––watch out for those big-toothed crocs if you’re going near the water!––boat rides through winding, nature-made canals, and as it borders the Caribbean Coast, there are even beaches in the proximity of the tourist facilities.

How Does Costa Rica Fare As A Beach Destination?

Unlike the Mexican Caribbean or Colombia’s Northern Coast, Costa Rica is not primarily a beach destination.

While it does boast over 800 miles of coastline, the country is, in fact, best known for its numerous waterfalls and untouched landscape.

What we’re trying to say is, don’t come to Costa Rica expecting to find a hotel-packed Cancun or a lively Cartagena anywhere on the Pacific or Caribbean sides: there are coastal resorts, but they’re far more laid-back, and tourism is (much) smaller in scale––and that’s the beauty of it.

Vacationing in Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica’s best-loved resort district on the Central Pacific Coast, you can expect truly unspoiled public beaches completely unclaimed by hospitality giants, more wildlife refuges, including a butterfly atrium and crocodile lagoon, and tourist-friendly treks.

There are some bars and nightlife venues scattered along the shoreline, but Tulum-goers should bear in mind this is not a major party destination––that’s not to say you can’t find the odd beach bar or entertainment venue within a short distance of your jungle retreat.

Costa Rica Is One Of The Safest Destinations In LatAm

Safety is a major concern for Americans traveling in Latin America.

There is definitely a level of exaggeration on American media’s part, but we won’t sugarcoat it and paint LatAm as a perfectly safe destination: local crime levels are generally higher than most U.S. states or Europe, and extra precaution is needed when venturing into certain areas.

In Costa Rica’s case, however, safety issues are not as prominent.

That is because the country has a long-standing reputation of being a ‘neutral’ zone in the Central American strip, with a stable constitutional democracy and fast-developing economy setting it apart from nearby dictatorships and failing states.

The U.S. State Department itself classes Costa Rica as a moderately safe destination, having added it to Level 2 of its Travel Advisory, meaning Americans are not discouraged from visiting––on the other hand, they must exercise increased caution due to crime.

They add the Costa Rican authorities provide ‘additional security resources’ in areas tourists frequent, and by ‘increased caution‘, they mean avoiding flashing valuable items like expensive jewelry and electronic devices and booking activities through reputable providers only.

If you’re planning on heading to Europe this season but you’ve been taken aback by the staggeringly high prices and reports of mass tourism even as summer peters out, hear me out:

Instead of jetting off to Barcelona, where you might be welcomed to ‘Go Home!‘ chants, or Dubrovnik, a coastal citadel turned Disneyland for adults, with all the queuing and shoulder bumping that that entails, how about you head over to Mostar instead?

Europe’s best-kept secret, this fairytale town in Bosnia-Herzegovina is home to a surprisingly high concentration of historic landmarks, and with its balmy weather, crystal-clear river and cheap prices, it’s just the perfect fall getaway:

Why You Should Visit Mostar In The Fall

If you’re a Europhile like me, you’ve probably seen this iconic view of Mostar’s arched bridge spanning the turquoise watercourse at some point, and no, it doesn’t belong somewhere in Spain, and certainly not neighboring Croatia.

One of the most iconic bridges in Europe, if not the most emblematic, is located in a quaint riverside city in Bosnia-Herzegovina, a small, overlooked Southeastern country most Americans have been sleeping on for decades:

Unlike other European tourism hotspots, Mostar is largely ignored by first-time visitors to Europe, and even returning travelers, even though it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site home to diverse communities and rich medieval and Ottoman heritage.

From the reconstructed Mostar Bridge, an exact replica of the 16th-century crossing that got bombed during the war, to the nearby Koski Mehmed-Pasha Mosque, with a towering minaret boasting breathtaking views of the cityscape, tourist sites here rarely ever feel crowded.

This includes the equally picturesque Crooked Bridge, a more intimate version of the Old Bridge without the busy flow of pedestrians, the abandoned Neretva House, a symbol of the Bosnian struggle, and Kajtaz, an Ottoman-era house preserving timeless oriental furniture.

Besides the evident architectural value, Mostar is incredibly pleasant to visit between September and October: the average daily high temperature is 82°F, dropping to lows of 50°F overnight, and it’s still shorts weather out without it being flaming hot.

If you’re lucky enough, you might see locals taking that vertiginous leap from the Old Bridge into the crystalline waters below––it’s an expected act of bravery of every native young man and one of the coolest rites of passage to witness.

On both sides of the bridge, there are winding cobbled lanes leading to ethnic bazaars and secret courtyards––and between us foodies, a gem of a traditional eatery or two.

An Affordable Cultural Getaway

During my short 2-day stint in Mostar, my favorite restaurant was Lagero, not only for the priceless views of the Old Bridge, but mainly their surprisingly-affordable menu, with prices ranging from only $5 to a reasonable $28.

At the pricier end of the range, I’m talking a sumptuous three-course menu, and probably the best ćevapi you’ll try on your trip.

If you’re looking for a truly immersive medieval experience, the rustic Timber & Stone Tavern is the place to go: big fan of the traditional attire and their baked aubergine stuffed with chicken, and I actually didn’t mind being the nightly fanfare and kitschy chivalric theme.

Now, for incredible native trout and an innovative fusion of European and Oriental cuisines, head over to Restoran Hindin Han in the heart of the Old Town: not only is staff unbelievably friendly, it is great value for money, with dishes priced $3-17.

Overall, Mostar is one of the most affordable destinations in Europe this fall: according to Budget Your Trip, tourists spend an average of $27 on meals per day, owing to cheaper consumer prices and an abundance of homegrown products.

When it comes to accommodation, the median hotel price per night is a reasonable $75; at the same time, an overnight stay at the four-star Hotel Bristol will set you back by $51 in mid-October, going as low as $13 for a shared dorm room at Hostel Dada.

Naturally, it all boils down to your profile as a traveler, whether you’re on the budget, mid-range or luxury side, and the level of comfort you seek.

How Safe Is Mostar?

If you’re old enough to remember the Bosnian War of the nineties, you may be wondering how safe Mostar is to visit in 2024.

As the U.S. State Department itself declares, pretty safe, as Bosnia-Herzegovina is considered a Level 2 destination, meaning Americans are not discouraged from visiting, and your biggest concern here is pickpocketing.

Speaking from personal experience, the risk is still pretty low: walking central Mostar, I never felt on edge or as if passersby were a threat.

Quite the contrary: it was often friendly locals I would encounter and a hospitable community that’s genuinely excited to host new visitors.

That being said, local history is complex and involves many sectarian conflicts, so I strongly advise you to read up on it prior to visiting.

Warfare is in Bosnia’s past, but the scars of battle are everywhere to be seen around the Old Town, be it the bullet holes in storied buildings or the rusty tanks in someone’s back garden, and the best way to explore Mostar’s past––and understand its present––is booking a guided tour.

Running on a duration of 2h30, Sheva’s walking tour departs from the Hamman Museum twice every day, at 9:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. and visits all of the main points of interest, without a fixed price: from $10 to $50, you decide on the guide’s reward depending on how satisfied you are.

Piece of advice?

Wear your comfiest shoes, as there’ll be a lot of strolling down broken cobblestones that day, and make sure you bring a water bottle and sunscreen: even in the fall, when temperatures are in theory cooling down across Europe, that Balkan heat remains unforgiving.

It’s been well-documented some Barcelonians are giving the cold shoulder to tourists at this point, but Spain is just too good to pass up!

Like many awesome destinations across the globe, crowds can be a nuisance, but many in Barcelona act like they’re in an exclusive club.

The reality is they know the allure of their amazing city, but some prefer to keep it all themselves as hordes of travelers have invaded their city.

Well, Barcelonians aren’t going to be a fan of mine as I reveal their secret getaway to escape their own crowds.

Spoiler alert: it’s Tarragona – a gorgeous beach city a little over an hour away by train from the busy streets of Barcelona.

Better yet, tourists will be welcomed here with open arms by locals.

Direct Flight Or Day Trip: This City Has Been Overlooked Far Too Long!

Side note: How does Europe have so many airports?!

Seriously!

It’s like every nook and cranny is so much easier to reach than the States. Rant over…

While it may be tempting to fly to Barcelona with seemingly endless flight options, you can travel to a lesser-known airport instead.

Those who do choose to come from Barcelona have multiple options too – the most popular being via train, followed by busses.

Renfe offers straight shots as low as $9. The same goes for Alsa’s buses with tickets slightly lower.

But those wanting to avoid Barcelona entirely can fly into Reus Airport (REU) with connecting flights all cross Europe, such as notable cities like Paris, Dublin, London, and Brussels.

This can potentially save you a decent amount of time rather than hopping a bus or train from Barcelona since the airport is only 20 minutes away from Tarragona.

Plus, many flights are “budget airlines,” which can save you a lot on airfare, meaning you’ll have more to spend in this slice of paradise!

Why Barcelonians Love This Place

To be fair, it’s not only Barcelona pulling out the welcome mat from under tourists’ feet.

Amsterdam, Venice, and Athens, among others, have been a bit moody when it comes to welcoming visitors.

What these cities fail to realize is there’s still going to be large amounts of people even if one foreigner never visited.

Barcelona has a population just shy of 2 million people, which isn’t chump change. 2 million people anyway is a large amount, so to solely blame issues just on tourists seems a bit dramatic on the surface.

Any way you slice it, however, Tarragona has been the secret escape from the hustle and bustle of Barcelona as a less-crowded blue water vacation spot surprisingly packed with intriguing historical sites.

The Colosseum is cool and all but what about former gladiator fighting grounds hugging the scenic coastline?

That’s right, there’s a well-preserved Roman theater backdropped by the vast Balearic Sea.

Tarragona is steeped in history, and it shows in the best of ways exploring the quaint city center.

Make sure to stop by Catedral Tarragona, a national monument dating back to the 12th century. But nowadays, it’s most popular for live music and wine tastings.

Ahh, the joys of Spain.

While Barcelonians certainly know how incomparable Spain’s food and wine scene are, other tourists should definitely arrive hungry and hydrated!

Tip: Don’t skip the Central Market of Tarragona dating back to 195 for fresh, savory local cuisine.

Crowd-Free Soft Sand Beaches

Tarragona boasts beautiful coastlines, becoming even more alluring once you realize how much space you have as this picturesque city has long been just a local’s secret.

There are 3 primary beaches to visit here, and you can’t go wrong with any of them. The pretty soft sand rivals many other popular coastlines.

The easiest to reach is Playa del Miracle right in town, or else you can head to Platja Arrabassada or Paltja Savinosa.

The latter being hyped the most for its pristine delicate sand and clear waters. Just be aware you may see more than you bargained for as nudity is welcomed here.

Why Visit Palawan?

Palawan isn’t just one island.

This incredibly popular Philippines hot spot is actually an archipelago comprising 1780 islands and islets. Meaning you’ll soon find your own definition of paradise here.

But the main island is the 5th largest in the Philippines, and this is where the vast majority of tourists choose to base themselves when they visit Palawan.

Time for a quick geography lesson!

Palawan is actually as close to Borneo as it is to Manila and this explains why it feels different to the rest of the Philippines. It has different cultural influences too.

The main attraction of Palawan is just how beautiful it is: it really has to be seen to be believed!

Think a lush and dense rainforest interior, and then sugar white beaches fringed with crystal clear water.

If it’s beaches you’re interested in, then the town of El Nido is the place to be.

Along with the obligatory white sand and gently lapping waters, you’ll also find towering limestone cliffs to the rear of the beaches and abundant marine life in the water.

El Nido Paradise offers scuba tours and boat tours of the smaller islands that surround El Nido.

An island-hopping tour will cost P9,600 ($170) and this includes the convenience of a hotel pick up.

For thrill-seekers, Tubbataha Reef is the best spot in Palawan for scuba divers.

It is home to some of the finest coral reefs in the world and is considered the best diving spot in the Philippines.

A Fascinating Cultural Heritage

It’s so easy to be distracted by the outstanding natural beauty of Palawan: it’s like a paradise on earth.

But what makes Palawan unique when compared to other pretty islands is its unique cultural heritage.

Take a trip to the Fayu Temple, which is a Chinese Buddhist temple in Honda Bay, Puerto Princesa City, Palawan. There are only 2 Fayu temples in the Philippines: the other is in Manilla.

Palawan boasts a rich Chinese culture, and this is a great place to explore this. As an added bonus, entry is free of charge making it a great break from the beach for travelers on a budget.

Perhaps the most famous cultural attraction in Palawan are the Tabon caves. This mega cave complex is made up of 225 caves and 8 of these can be visited by tourists.

As important as they are beautiful, these caves are considered the “cradle of civilization” for the Philippines thanks to the number of jar burials and prehistoric human remains found here.

The water is vibrant blue, and the cave structure itself is fascinating.

It’s also worth noting that the people on the islands are warm and welcoming to tourists.

Laid-back, easy-going, and happy to share their culture, the people of Palawan will play a key role in making your vacation both interesting and stress-free.

Getting To Palawan

The best time of year to visit Palawan is during the island’s dry season.

This runs from November to April, meaning that now is the perfect time to start planning your trip!

And I’m not going to lie and say that getting to Palawan is easy: there is no direct flight from the U.S. But it isn’t hard either!

You’ll simply need to fly to Manilla and then take a flight from there to Puerto Princesa International Airport.

Despite having international in its name, Puerto Princesa International Airport flies primarily domestic routes with the main route being to Manila.

An example flight would see you fly from LAX to Manila with Philippine Airlines.

You’ll then have a short layover in Manila before flying onto Puerto Princesa International Airport.

From November 1 to November 9, a return economic flight on this route will cost $1,266.

Although flights aren’t cheap, once you’re on the island, it is considered a very affordable destination for travelers on a budget.

Try to erase the fear-mongering narrative regarding Taipei over the past couple of years. Those talks have died down.

Taiwan recently released an incredible unlimited train pass for tourists valid through September.

Given the popularity, it wouldn’t be surprising to see an extension.

However, rail travel in general is very cheap, especially around the city. Tickets are as low as 61 cents!

Taipei is made to be explored day and night with astounding natural attractions like free-to-enter Yangmingshan National Park to infinite food options from street vendors to fine dining.

Taiwan may be relatively small, but ease of access allows you to visit a multitude of cool spots, leaving no stone unturned in its most sought-after city.

Tip: If you’re an adventurous eater, make sure to try local delicacy, Stinky Tofu! Smells like a barnyard, but tastes surprisingly good!

Cheap Stays And Trendy Cafes

If you’re a full-fledged digital nomad, chances are you won’t be ordering room service at nice hotels but rather whopping up dinner yourself in a cozy Airbnb or hostel.

The good news is that Taipei’s accommodations are very affordable. Expect to pay no more than $900 at most, but also keep an eye out for great values on the outskirts as low as the $200s!

While you may not want to spend your entire time in a capsule hotel, more and more of these unique stays are popping up across Asia, including Taipei.

Check out the Capsule Inn Taipei, which is equipped with a work lounge to get your Taipei trip started off right.

The city boasts dozens of new co-working spaces as well and all you have to do is scroll through #Taipei on TikTok to see all the trendy eye-popping cafes for boba and coffee.

Some places borrow the word “island” to make themselves sound sexy.

Take Coronado, a popular peninsula outside San Diego that claims to be an island to boost tourism appeal.

Here, however, is a true barrier island boasting virgin natural offerings like the inland Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve surrounded by 8 miles of paradisal sand and pristine waters, one of many reasons why it’s one of Southern Living’s favorite hideaways.

It’s the ultimate escape from the hustle and bustle and everyday stresses, where you can let loose with locals and enjoy real Florida beaches without towering resorts and cheesy attractions.

‘Where We’re Going We Don’t Need Roads’… But You Do Need A Boat

Nearby Naples is a luxurious resort town where you’ll have no problem finding a boat to reach Keewaydin.

Check out Naples Waterways and Wildlife Tours for Keewaydin tours starting at $55.

Otherwise, you’ll have to charter a boat or make friends fast! Boats depart from Marco Island as well so you can island-hop with the Hemingway Water Shuttle for just $22. Can’t beat that!

You’ll arrive at the calm waters of the bay where you then trek through a narrow path to virtually crowd-free white sand beaches.

Make sure to bring a lounge chair, picnic blankets, and whatever else is deemed necessary.

Although, there is one unique aspect you don’t have to worry about.

Picnics are common here, but Just Beachy Burgers has you covered otherwise. Food trucks may be popular across the globe, but food boats are a Florida staple.

It’s not quite room service, but this is as close as it gets on a paradise island with no hotels.

Fun fact: Keewaydin Island is the only pet-friendly beach in the Naples region, so feel free to bring your furry friend on vacation too! (Both boat services mentioned above allow pets.)

The Perfect Place To Swim, Snorkel & Shell

Usually, beachgoers are content if they can do one of the following: swim, snorkel, or “hunt” seashells.

Some of the most popular beaches in the world don’t meet all 3 marks, but Keewaydin ticks off all the boxes.

While the famous lyric ‘only worry in the world is the tide gonna reach my chair‘ does hold true here, the only real worry is being aware of other boaters and unpredictable strong currents.

The water is warm and clear as can be to enjoy a nice dip or dive to explore the ocean floor.

One recent visitor claimed on TripAdvisor, ‘Amazing shelling, plenty of room to spread out, plenty of beaches to walk and enjoy’.

The South gets a bad rap more often than not. There’s a lot more here than a bunch of hicks letting life slip by on their front porch.

Yes, there are definitely some podunk towns you can easily skip, but there are also some really cool cities well worth exploring.

Since southern cities are often overshadowed, the element of surprise is all the more alluring.

Rather than take selfies with Chicago’s ‘Bean’, New York’s Statue of Liberty or one of many scenic California beaches, it’s okay to steer away from what you know and give new places a chance.

One such city is giving you a head start after seeing over 24 million visitors, becoming the trendiest new destination in the South. (Sorry, Dallas!)

Oklahoma City: The South’s Biggest Surprise

Ever heard of someone vacationing in Oklahoma City?

Perhaps not, and that’s okay.

That’s partly because it’s an up-and-coming destination and if Rome wasn’t built in a day, how can we expect the same for OKC?

Well, if you were to look back on this city’s growth on a time-lapse, it would certainly seem that way.

OKC used to be nothing special – a coin flip between here and Tulsa for the state’s go-to “metropolis”.

But now it’s thriving and beginning to steal some of the spotlight away from nearby cities such as Dallas, a trendy destination in its own right.

Between vibrant neighborhoods, buzzing restaurants, and a diehard sports community, OKC is full of surprises.

Bricktown: The Heart Of The Action

Seems as if every city has a go-to place. In OKC, there’s no doubt it’s Bricktown.

Nestled along the scenic Oklahoma River, it’s not exactly Venice, but hey, people down here are simple folk.

Truth be told it’s very pretty and makes for an excellent backdrop amidst the busiest district of the city and you can book a fun water taxi, but sadly no gondolas.

This historic part of town has been revamped and rightfully named Bricktown after breathing new life into old buildings in desperate need of a makeover.

Despite being a new “it” destination, some might actually say this area is too touristy with escape rooms, etc.

But this is where locals come to let loose too. There are lively bars and award-winning restaurants ready to welcome you, such as Grey Sweater.

No Need To Resist The Urge To Splurge: OKC Is Very Affordable

Trendy southern cities such as Austin and Dallas aren’t nearly as affordable as they used to.

That’s where OKC steps in to say, “hold my beer”.

There’s no need to resist the urge to splurge here as a tourist. Many people actually move here for cheaper real estate, but you can take advantage of very affordable stays.

For example, the 4-star Wyndham Grand is in the $100 range. Try scoring that in just about any other major city!

Dining out also won’t break the bank with reasonable prices, especially ‘happy hours’ at some of the more popular bars like JJ’s Alley Bricktown Pub.

Better yet, many museums are free to enter, such as:

Don’t forget this is cowboy country, and as a cowboy, they tend to consider themselves as southern gentlemen.

As such, there are ample museums taking a deep dive into the fascinating ‘blazing saddles’ culture that would make Yellowstone fans blush, but not for free unfortunately.

Although, the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum is only $20 for admission.

A Big City With Small Town Vibes

Oklahoma City has a population of roughly 700,000 people, but many say its down-home charm gives it a small town feel.

Before OKC became a trendy hotspot, Oklahoma’s claim to fame was delightful getaways like Broken Bow, college football games, or casino towns like Durant, home to local favorite Choctaw Casino & Resort.

OKC hasn’t gotten too big for their britches and remembers their roots. Coming here is a nice balance between big city amenities and small-town charm where ‘southern hospitality’ still holds true.

Well, until the rowdy crowds of the Thunder games get the best of them…
