North Americans Can Expect These Flight Costs In 2023

Those living in North America have probably noticed the sharp increase in fares over the course of 2022, as the region led the world in air travel recovery. However, this quick uptake in fares during 2022 actually spells better news for 2023. Prices are still predicted to increase, but the increase will be less drastic than in areas like Europe and Asia.

They also took into consideration the price of each mode of transportation to come up with a comprehensive ranking of cities with the most convenient and best-value urban transportation options. These are the top 5 European cities from the study that are the easiest to get around and have good public transportation.

1. Zurich, Switzerland

Switzerland’s largest city topped the ranking in this study. Zurich has plenty of public transportation options, with 15 tram lines, 4 commuter train lines, and 67 bus routes to whisk locals and tourists across the city. The network is efficient and extensive, making travel within Zurich a breeze. The Zurich Airport is also well connected to public transport, making the need for a car obsolete for anyone staying within the city. Trains from the airport to the city’s main train station come every 10 minutes and take just 15 minutes.

2. Berlin, Germany

Berlin is a world leader when it comes to shared transportation. Germany’s capital city has tons of options when it comes to sharing programs for e-scooter, bikes, and motorscooters. According to Omio’s study, there are 16 different companies to choose from! Visitors traveling short distances within the city can choose from companies like Lime, Bird, or Tier. Anyone wanting to use a shared bike or scooter can download the relevant company’s app to locate, pay for, and unlock a bike or scooter. Just be sure not to ride on sidewalks or in pedestrian zones, or you will face a fine.

3. Vienna, Austria

The Austrian capital of Vienna is not only well-connected, but it also has affordable transportation choices. Taxi rates are reasonable, as are the shared mobility options. With 2 bike share providers, 7 e-scooter, and 3 motor scooter companies to choose from, getting around without a car is easy. Tickets on the city’s public transportation cost just $2.50, and the average price of a shared motor scooter is just $5.50.

4. Milan, Italy

“There has never been a better time, or easier way, to visit Puerto Rico, with new direct flights departing from across the U.S. daily, and no passport required. Especially as the cold settles in across much of the mainland, we encourage people to feel the warmth in Puerto Rico,” said Leah Chandler, CMO of Discover Puerto Rico, in a press release.

We know summers in Europe are almost exclusively associated with scenic drives along France’s Côte d’Azur, Italy’s street corner gelaterias and art galleries, and leisurely afternoon strolls in Spain’s ocher-tinged small towns – as some might call it, the quintessential Mediterranean starter package. But what if we told you one of the trendiest beach destinations in the continent right now is, in fact, not located in the famous basin?

We haven’t even seen the first snow of the season yet, but our hearts and minds are already set on the hotter months to come. Now that pandemic-related restrictions have been dropped and normal tourism has resumed, demand for travel to Europe has skyrocketed, particularly over the summer holidays – and it is set to reach new historical heights next year.

Interestingly, there is a slow-burner of a coastal attraction emerging as a far more attractive alternative:

Meet Bulgaria’s Gorgeous Black Sea Coast

In case you weren’t aware, the Eastern European nation of Bulgaria does have a coast, and quite an extensive one at that, running for 378 km from its southernmost point, where it meets Turkey, to the North, bordering the fellow Balkan country of Romania – and contrary to popular belief, the Southern Mediterranean is not the only warm ocean in Europe.

The Black Sea can reach temperatures of up to 82.4°F (28°C) in summer, and despite its peculiar name, it couldn’t be a prettier shade of blue. It may not be crystal clear like the Adriatic branch of the Mediterranean or a bright azure like the French Riviera, but it is just as warm, if not warmer, and its calm waters are incredibly pleasant to swim in.

The Bulgarian Coast is also dotted with UNESCO-listed monuments and historical ruins, such as the insular Nessebar, referred to as the ‘Pearl of the Black Sea’. Nessebar dates back more than three millennia, and its collection of ancient landmarks, Romanesque churches, and well-preserved city walls, fully encircling the islet, are truly a sight to behold.

On top of that, white and golden sandy beaches comprise 130 km of the coastline, with the Varna and Burgas provinces, the latter of which includes Nessebar and its adjacent Sunny Beach, listed as the leading resort complexes in the country. On average, tourists can expect highs of 30 degrees from May through August in the Black Sea region.

A Hidden Treasure Recently Rediscovered

For decades, Bulgaria’s coastal gems remained concealed from foreigners due to the years the nation spent as a Communist regime and obscure satellite state for the Soviets. International tourism really began to flourish upon the country’s democratization and reopening to the outside world in the early nineties, in a move that ushered a rapid ‘Europeanization’.

Following the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the Soviet Union, Bulgaria began tilting westward, having succeeded in joining NATO and, more recently, in 2007, the European Union. While domestic visitors used to account for the largest share of tourism revenue in the past, now the balance has shifted dramatically.

In 2019, prior to Covid, 70% of Black Sea resort guests were foreigners, coming mostly from Germany and Eastern Europe, proving awareness of Bulgaria as a sunny hotspot is growing. In the first ten months of this year, passenger traffic in the airports of Varna and Burgas rose by 59% (jointly), as reported by Germany’s Fraport Group.

Individually, Varna is up by 43% annually, with 1.3 million tourists recorded between January and October; Burgas takes the lead, surging by 74% (1.63 million arrivals). It may not seem like much, but we must take into account the heavy competition Bulgaria faces on the Mediterranean front and the fact that it is not a first choice for a majority of travelers.

Is It Because It’s Cheap?

Of course, Bulgaria’s affordability as a destination may be partly to blame for its astronomical rise in recent years: on average, the cost of living is 44.32% lower than in the United States, making it a safe haven for budget travelers, especially digital nomads looking to save money as they country-hop across Europe, while still accessing luxuries they wouldn’t elsewhere.

Booking ahead of time, vacationers can find week-long stays in five-star, all-inclusive hotels for as little as BGN 2,866.00, or only USD 1,565.94 – some high-end Sicilian resorts will charge that per night. If you want to bag a real bargain and, on top of that, avoid the crazy summer crowd, you better hurry: Bulgaria’s Black Sea Coast will not remain ‘off-path’ for long.

Its surprising growth rates alone are enough proof that the Black Sea is becoming more popular each passing year. Surely it will not be different in 2023, now that Bulgaria has removed all entry requirements pertaining to Covid, allowing travelers to cross the border freely without presenting vaccine certificates or undergoing testing.

Bulgaria Is Geographically Diverse

Bulgaria isn’t a place people would normally associate with sandy beaches and warm weather, being part of the South Slavic world, located in the Far East of Europe, and home to alpine peaks and packed with ski stations. A surprising fact many do not know, however, is that it is culturally and geographically diverse – more so than any of its neighbors.

To the West, close to the borders with Serbia and North Macedonia, the landscape is dominated by mountain ranges and deep valleys, frequently blanketed by snow over winter. In Central-South Bulgaria, the weather stays pleasant year-round, resembling that of Tuscany; as for the coast, it normally enjoys cool to mild winters and scorching summers.

There are no direct U.S. flights to Bulgaria, but once they are in Europe for their extended summer vacation, Americans can easily travel to Varna or Burgas using any major European city as a transit hub. During the winter (with the exception of the busy Christmas season), you can enjoy low crowds in Paris and have attractions like the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, and Versailles almost to yourself.

5. Venice, Italy

Venice is a destination that has suffered from extreme overtourism in the last decade.

2. Bali

Bali has reopened for vaccinated travelers only after extremely strict closures and entry requirements for over two years.

After some of the strictest lockdowns and closures in the world, Australia finally reopened to international tourists and dropped all entry requirements in July.

The best time to visit Sydney for pleasant weather is February to May, making early 2023 the perfect time to plan a visit.

4. Seoul

The country also reinstated a mask mandate in December in some locations, including airplanes and airports.

Despite the lingering restrictions, travelers have been eager to explore the vibrant city of Rio De Janeiro, which will once again host one of the best Carnival celebrations in the world in February 2023.

6. Málaga

Málaga, Spain is known for being one of the best destinations in southern Spain, with great beaches and nightlife, as well as food and culture.

Although it gets extremely crowded in the summer months, Málaga is a great place to visit any time of year. It’s a popular winter sun destination in Europe, and although it might be a little too cold for a dip in the ocean, you can certainly enjoy sunbathing and pleasant weather here, even during the winter and spring.

Switzerland Just Launched A Gorgeous New Scenic Train

Imagine winding through the snow-capped Swiss Alps on a heated seat enjoying champagne and caviar while you take in the sights. That is now possible thanks to the launch of the GoldenPass Express, Switzerland’s newest scenic train. The seamless train ride connects the Swiss cities of Montreux and Interlaken and the 12 stops in between and takes 3 hours and 15 minutes.

The announcement of the GoldenPass Express is a big deal. The gorgeous journey is made possible by new components that allow the train to travel on two different width tracks, something that has not been done to this extent before. The project is said to have cost $96 million dollars. Operators hope this journey will join the ranks of other famous tourist trains like the Glacier Express and Bernina Express.

A Long Time Coming

The idea for this train has been in the works since 1873. In 1916 the GoldenPass Line was established making travel possible between Montreux and Lucerne. However, the rail network was built with two different gauge widths, meaning passengers needed to make 2 transfers throughout the journey. There were high hopes that building a third rail line could solve the problem, but the project’s expense was prohibitive.

Fancy New Train Technology

The problem faced by the engineers had to do with the size of the tracks that were built specific to the terrain they travel through. The mountain railways were built with metric gauges, while the long-distance tracks were standard gauges.

A game-changing resolution came when it was decided to modify the trains themselves, rather than the tracks. The resulting solution was to have the trains “jump” the two tracks. This is accomplished by using variable gauge bougies (the structure under the train that holds the axles and wheels in place ) and a gauge adapting ramp that can accommodate both sets of tracks, as well as the different platform heights. This is all done in seconds while passengers remain comfortably in their seats.

A Swiss Trian Journey With Breathtaking Scenery

The journey between Montreux and Interlaken is simply stunning. Passengers travel through the Vaud Riviera past the Bernese Alps and Pays-d’Enhaut. Advocates for the line had long dreamt of a seamless journey from “palm trees to glaciers” within the diverse mountain region.

The train now seamlessly connects the French and German-speaking regions, the rural areas to the cities, and lakes with the mountains and glaciers. The train’s launch is not only a dream come true for long-term supporters, it is also an engineering feat and world-first because of the new equipment used.

Passengers Can Enjoy The Ride In Luxury

The GoldenPass Express can carry 184 passengers in its five coaches. There are three different classes of seats available to purchase. While the majority of seats are in 2^nd class, passengers can upgrade to 1^st or Prestige class and truly ride in style.

Prestige class has 18 exclusive seats that are heated and can rotate so that passengers are always facing the direction of travel. The seats are extra roomy and comfortable and raised up by 15 inches so that passengers feel like they are part of the surrounding nature. All of the coaches offer panoramic views of beautiful Swiss nature.

GoldenPass Express has prioritized local purveyors in its food and beverage selection. Wines are from Swiss winemakers Testuz, and beer from the Rugenbräu brewery is also served. Charcuterie platters from a local Swiss butchery are available, as well as a selection of locally farmed Oona caviar.

Prices vary by class and passenger type and currently cost $78 for a second-class ticket, $122 for 1st class, and it costs an additional $38 to upgrade to a prestige class. Tickets can be purchased on the GoldenPass Express website. The train currently operates once a day in each direction. Beginning in June there will be four round-trip journeys.
