Survey Reveals The Most Annoying Passengers On Flights

If you have never had another passenger annoy you during one of your flights, count yourself lucky! Most travelers have run into a passenger that irritated them at some point during a flight. The more you fly, the more often you see (or smell) passengers that clearly aren’t the rest of the flight’s favorite character. In a recent survey, travelers were asked which behaviors from other passengers annoyed them.

Below are the top 10 most annoying passengers on flights, as well as the percentage of respondents who found their behaviors annoying.

1) Passengers Who Kick the Seat

Percentage of Respondents: 59.11%

Unsurprisingly, passengers found those who kicked the back of their seats to be one of the most annoying things a fellow passenger can do. As a direct physical attack on travelers’ personal space and comfort, it makes sense that this is at the top of the list.

2) Passengers Who Get Drunk and Unruly

Percentage of Respondents: 59.11%

Drunk and unruly passengers tied with seat kicking for 1^st place, and it’s no surprise why. Once you are thousands of feet in the air in a metal tube, there’s no way to walk away from a situation. Unfortunately, some passengers can’t handle their alcohol, leading to highly uncomfortable and even dangerous situations like the one below.

In the best case, you’ll have to put up with snoring from someone who had a few too many. In the worst case, threats of physical violence have occurred. This particular behavior can go from annoying to dangerous quite quickly.

3) Passengers Who Smell Bad (or too Good)

Percentage of Respondents: 48%

Nearly half of respondents said passengers who smell bad from poor hygiene or wear too much cologne annoy them. Being stuck in a giant flying tube with hundreds of other people is bad enough. Add in unpleasant smells, and it becomes a whole different experience.

4) Passengers Who Are Negligent Parents

Percentage of Respondents: 46.81%

Trailing behind bad-smelling passengers are parents who aren’t attentive during flights. Almost half of the respondents said parents who don’t attend to their children annoy them on flights. Unfortunately, this behavior often coincides with the #1 most annoying thing – seat kicking.

5) Passengers Who Eat Strong-Smelling Foods

Percentage of Respondents: 39.8%

Similar to #3, passengers who eat foods with a pungent smell can annoy the people around them. However, these smells aren’t quite as annoying as passengers who smell bad.

6) Passengers Who Hog the Armrest

Percentage of Respondents: 39.07%

Nearly two out of five respondents thought passengers who hog the armrest are annoying. You probably understand what they mean if you’ve been stuck in the middle seat with two armrest hogs.

7) Passengers Who Recline the Seat All the Way

Percentage of Respondents: 38.25%

Reclining the seat on an airplane has been a debate among travelers for years. Still, about 38% of respondents agreed that this was annoying behavior.

8) Passengers Who Talk to You Too Much

Percentage of Respondents: 29.87%

Getting stuck in a conversation is a nightmare for many travelers, but at least while on land, the option of walking away is available. Thousands of feet in the air, there’s no getting away from a talkative passenger. However, beginning the flight with headphones may help avoid getting caught in unwanted conversation.

9) Passengers Who Board or Deplane Out of Turn

Percentage of Respondents: 29.60%

Everyone has witnessed the eager passengers who jump out of their seats and dash down the aisle only to wait for the plane doors to open. Maybe they are afraid of missing a connecting flight, or perhaps that’s just how they are. Either way, nearly 3 in 10 respondents found this annoying.

10) Passengers Who Listen Have Their Headphones Turned Up Too Loud

Percentage of Respondents: 28.96%

Planes are loud as it is and often drown out a lot of background noise. If someone’s music is so loud that you can hear it, it’s probably too loud. This trailed just behind passengers who skip their turn boarding, with just under 3 in 10 saying loud music or movies annoy them.

Noteworthy Extras

Several more annoying passengers that didn’t make the top 10 were passengers who take off their shoes, passengers who use overhead space far in front of their seat, and passengers who practice too much PDA. One thing remains clear. Packing a few hundred people together in an enclosed space for a few hours can certainly bring out some behaviors that annoy fellow passengers.

Tipping on vacation is awkward. There’s no way around it. Every country has its own norms, and every hotel has a hundred employees who all seem worthy of a few extra bucks. But who do we actually need to tip? When should we do it? And how often should we be doing it? And of course, how much?

Fear no more, for Travel Off Path has you covered. Here’s the ultimate guide on who to tip while traveling.

From the Airport To The Hotel

Obviously, this depends on how you get to your hotel. If you’re finding your own way, tip yourself with a drink at the bar later. If not, follow these rules.

Shuttle Drivers

If you’ve got a shuttle organized by your hotel, definitely tip your driver. A lot of them rely heavily on tips. Depending on the country, anywhere from $2.50 to $5.00 a person should suffice.

Taxi Drivers

Don’t tip your taxi driver unless you really want to. They’re making money off of your fare at a decent rate. The tourist area rates are often brutally inflated, so don’t go out of your way for them.

In The Hotel

The Porters

These guys can make your arrival and departure a breeze. Reward them as such. It doesn’t require anything crazy. A few bucks per bag is perfect. A family of four could tip $10-$15, especially if they carry the luggage a pretty long way or in rough weather. Many porters often set the mood for the entire stay with their attitude, so make sure they know they’ve done a good job.

Housekeeping

Often unseen, this team helps make your room spotless when your return each day (at least, they usually do). They’re also some of the worst-paid workers in the sector, so a tip for them can go a long way.

It’s important to leave a small amount each day rather than one large tip at the end, as you may have multiple housekeepers in your room. It’s also a great idea to leave a slightly larger tip on your first day to help get a little bit of extra attention to your room.

Don’t go crazy. $5 a day is at the upper end of what is necessary, especially in countries with a lower cost of living. Make sure to leave it somewhere obvious, so it’s clear for them.

The Lobby Crew

The Concierge

In today’s internet-dominated world, the concierge has become a little less useful for many of us. But they are still around in most good hotels. They’re still capable of booking things, sniffing out a good reservation, and even bagging you a better room, but you might not use them so much. If you’re a hotel regular, the concierge should still be a useful person.

Tip them based on use. If they just throw you a direction or two, you’re fine. But if they spend half an hour working out your day, give them $5 or so.

Front Desk Staff

As helpful as they can be, the front desk doesn’t need to be tipped. Many of them are on a managerial path and are paid a yearly salary as opposed to hourly. The best thing you can do for them is to go online and namedrop them in a good review of your hotel.

Eating Out

This is where things get complicated. In the US, we tip almost every waiter or barman who serves us. This is mainly due to the way these workers are paid. In Europe and other areas of the world, bar and restaurant staff are paid a fair hourly wage, and tipping is not expected – in some cases, it can be taken as an insult.

The Americas

As a rule of thumb, always tip your servers in the Americas. North, Central, And South America all expect a tip of some sort. In the States, Canada, and Colombia, for 15-20%. In other countries, you can swing a little lower, in the 10-15% range. Brazil, Costa Rica, and Chile all include a service or sit-down charge, so you don’t need to tip there.

Europe

Europeans are far less likely to take tips than anywhere else in the world. Most of the countries there receive good wages, and often, the waiters won’t receive the whole thing anyway. Some countries now actively list their service charge (the price is the same) to give the hint that tipping isn’t required.

In most of these places, you can leave a little extra if the service was exceptional. Otherwise, don’t worry about it. If you’re unsure about an individual country, just ask someone when you arrive.

Africa and the Middle-east

Tipping is widely expected in the Middle East. Even countries like Qatar and the UAE, which often include service charges, want an extra 15-20% on top of the bill. Many African countries also look for about 10-15% of the bill in tips.

5 New Flights To The Dominican Republic Are Launching From The U.S. And Canada

Now that most of the Caribbean has reopened, the Dominican Republic (DR) is eager to welcome visitors. In response to the surging demand, low cost carriers are launching a total of five new flight flights to the insular nation in the high season from the U.S. and Canada, making it a lot easier for North Americans to escape the cold winter months.

The DR had always been a beach hotspot in the years preceding the health crisis, but it truly found its fame and made a name for itself in the post-pandemic era, after a a record number of tourist arrivals was recorded. To put it simply, it is hotter than ever before and we can expect flight frequencies to increase further.

So far, this is all we know about the new flight routes:

Frontier, Swoop And Air Century Adding DR Flights This Winter

Both the U.S. Frontier and Canada’s Swoop were the main beneficiaries of an agreement struck between the DR’s Civil Aeronautics Board, shortened to JAC in Spanish, and five other airlines, allowing for the inauguration of new flights to the island. Besides the popular North American operators, Condor, Neos and Air Century nabbed a slice of the market.

In total, the deal has green-lit a 13 new international routes into the Dominican Republic, due to start between November 2022 and January 2023. Naturally, we will focus mostly on Frontier and Swoop only, as they will serve the North American market exclusively, though the Dominican-based Air Century has been allotted U.S. flights as well.

Let’s Start With Frontier

Frontier already offers an air bridge between a number of cities and Punta Cana, the DR’s leading beach destination, namely:
- Chicago (Chicago O’Hare)
- Cleveland (Cleveland Hopkins International)
- Miami International
- Orlando International
- Philadelphia International
Additionally, seasonal flights depart to Punta Cana from Atlanta (Hartsfield-Jackson), St. Louis Lambert International, and outside of the mainland U.S., Puerto Rico. Having established a strong presence in the island’s easternmost tip, the carrier’s top executives have now set their eyes on Santo Domingo, the fast-developing capital.

More specifically, they have requested that the DR authorities modify their ‘Operating Permit’, which would allow them to expand service to Santo Domingo, adding a brand new route from Tampa International (TPA). Moreover, the Florida hub could be getting its own Punta Cana flights, should Frontier’s request get approved.

These routes will launch on November 5, 2022, once the Airbus A320neo with a 186-seat capacity takes to the skies. They are the latest major announcement coming from Frontier regarding winter travel, as up until now, the company seemed to focus on domestic routes – Phoenix, for instance, is set to host ten new flights to other U.S. hubs.

Air Century Looks For A Place In The American Market

While it surely isn’t as popular, at least in the American market, the DR’s own Air Century is introducing seven new international flights from the island – two of those are Tampa and Miami-bound. Pretty soon, Tampa residents will be able to choose whether their airline of preference, be it American or Dominican.

Whether a new fare war is about to start remains to be seen, though one thing is for certain: it’s the customers who will come out as winners either way. As for Miami, Air Century is planning to initiate service from the Southern Californian city to the aforementioned Punta Cana and Santo Domingo – exact schedules and frequency are yet to be outlined.

Hamilton To Punta Cana Flights Debuting Soon

Lastly, Canada’s Swoop has reasons to celebrate after obtaining authorization to fly the Hamilton International (YHM)-Punta Cana route. Official details include:
- Operations will begin between January 11 and April 26, 2023
- Flight frequency is once a week, every Wednesday
- Tickets could be as cheap as CAN$199 one-way at the lowest fare level
Regarding the third item, price estimates have not been released yet, but we can assume they won’t be much more expensive than the ones we’ve seen for Toronto-Punta Cana, or CAN$199 on select dates. It is Swoop’s only other DR product, and a route where the carrier has deployed a 737-800 with a seating capacity of 174 – 162 Economy and 12 Business.

This gives us some indication as to where we’re headed with the future Hamilton flights.

The Five New Routes

In sum, the new five routes to the Dominican Republic from the U.S. and Canada are:
- Tampa-Santo Domingo (Frontier)
- Tampa-Punta Cana (Frontier, Air Century)
- Miami-Santo Domingo (Air Century)
- Miami-Punta Cana (Air Century)
- Hamilton, Canada-Punta Cana (Swoop)
Elsewhere, Dusseldorf International in Germany is getting its own La Romana flights, complementing an existing-service to Puerto Plata and Punta Cana; Italy’s Neos, on the other hand, is flying to the DR from Rome Fiumicino and Verona International – again, to La Romana, Europe’s favorite entry point into the Caribbean gem.

The JAC has also confirmed availability for a whopping 61 new international routes, proving the Dominican Republic is growing rapidly as a destination. As of now, no airlines have claimed those.

With travel prices expected to rise for the winter vacation months and the shoulder season upon us, it looks like the fall is the best time to book your next adventure, whether it be international or domestic. If you’re worried about a big spike in flight prices for the last few months of 2022, from analyzing the trends it looks like October is currently the cheapest month to book that trip to New York City.

We checked out the latest flight prices on Skyscanner, did a search for the “Cheapest Month” for flights from cities across the U.S. to New York and October came up as the best month.

We reported last month that New York City was the most expensive city for air travel in the U.S., but those prices are now dropping.

If you want to plan a December trip to New York City, we also recommend booking that flight in October to lock in the best price. New York City during the holidays is nothing short of magical, so know there are still ways to find the best prices for that trip.

And according to Hopper’s Fall Shoulder Season guide, flight prices will be the cheapest when booked 3-6 weeks before your scheduled departure. This rule currently applies to booking domestic trips in the U.S. The average posted in Hopper’s guide on flights to New York City is $212, down $138 dollars compared to this summer.

So if you want to head to New York City for the holidays, check prices in early October (and set up a price alert!) to start the booking process. Price alerts can help you predict when the best window for booking is according to the price trends, and you’ll be able to grab that flight deal before prices rise again.

Hotel Prices Drop During November

For hotels, a lot of prices will drop by end of October and through November, because it marks the end of the high season (or the beginning of the low season, depending on how you look at it!). Hotel prices will go way up for the last two weeks of December and into January, so try and lock those prices before they spike.

Visiting New York in November means that you might see the first snow, wander around without all the big crowds, and experience get the tail end of the fall colors.

Train Travel To New York

Another great reason to book (and travel) to New York City during the fall months is to experience the foliage. On top of air travel, on the ground travel is ramping up to New York, with Amtrak recently adding routes from Canada as well as this New England city.

A bonus about booking your trip to New York in October is that the summer rush is over, New Yorkers are heading back to the city from the countryside and things are getting back to New York time. With the summer tourists gone, you can enjoy the fall months with locals and experience the fall foliage.

As of the time of writing, the Amtrak strike will not affect train routes to New York City.

New York City Travel Tips You Didn’t Think You Needed

Here are some things to keep in mind the next time you visit New York:

Broadway doesn’t have to be expensive: You don’t have to spend big $$ to see a Broadway show! Broadway is back big time and 2022 has seen some amazing shows so far. And, seeing these performances on the cheap has never been easier.

The TKTS discount booth just reopened at Lincoln Center, which is where you can stand in line to get half-off Broadway tickets the day of the show. There’s also TodayTix, a handy app where you can book same-day Broadway tickets and even apply for the lottery to get cheap tickets.

Don’t take Ubers everywhere: Getting around by ride-share apps like Uber might seem like the quickest way to get around New York City. But if you’re in town for more than a few days, consider traveling around by subway. The New York City MetroCard is just over $30 for 7 days of unlimited travel on the MTA, so you can get around all 5 boroughs for a week for the same price of about two Uber rides.

Booking your hotel for shoulder season, and last-minute: When looking for the best hotel deals, it’s always a good idea to check third-party sites like booking.com as they post cheap last-minute hotel deals for any destinations.

There’s a TON of free things to do in New York: Check beforehand for any events like free museum days before your trip so you can make your itinerary as budget-friendly as possible. There’s also so many free things to do in the city that are worth checking out. The fall months is also a great time for walking around, and one of the best ways to explore New York is on foot.

Acknowledging long-term solo travel as one of 2022’s leading trends, the famous home rental and booking platform AirBnB has unveiled the top 5 most affordable digital nomad destinations in the U.S. this year. Understandably, major cities like New York, Los Angeles and the luxurious Vegas did not make the cut.

The United States is not exactly known for being a digital nomad hub, mostly due to its strict visa rules, which keep most long term travelers out, as well as high cost of living compared to other budget destinations like Colombia or Brazil. For that reason, getting good value for money can be a challenge, especially in big urban centers and tourist hotspots.

That does not mean nomads living on a stricter budget can’t base themselves in the U.S. – they just need to know where to look:

The U.S.’s Most Affordable Long-Term Rentals Are…

In defining the top five most affordable nomad destinations in the U.S., AirBnB took into account the average nightly price for popular destinations only, where more than 1,000 long-term stays were recorded in the first yearly quarter. While ‘long-term stay’ is not a fixed period, it generally refers to trips longer than a couple of weeks, or even those exceeding one month.

With that in mind, the States’ best cities to live as a budget nomad are the following:

5. Angleton, Texas

Angleton is Texas’ incredibly budget-friendly destination within the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land metropolitan zone. A small city of less than 20,000 inhabitants, it has AirBnBs priced at a moderate $24,5 per night, far lower than Houston’s stratospheric $151, and a much more relaxed vibe than its neighboring metropolis.

In the municipality, nomads have a total of nine public parks to go on nature walks, besides being able to attend Brazoria County Fair, Texas’ largest, when booking stays throughout October. Despite being off the main route, it is not at all hard to get to: Angleton is only 43 miles south of downtown Houston and 18 miles north of Freeport, on the coast.

That way, young travelers can easily hit H-Town for a night out while still enjoying all the perks of residing in a quaint, traditionally Texan location.

4. Lamberton, Minnesota

A short two hour drive southeast of Minneapolis, Lamberton is a town in Minnesota home to roughly 800 inhabitants, nestled deep in the historical Redwood County. The area is famous for its abundance of nature, waterfalls, rivers and nature trails, something travelers are actively looking for after being confined to their homes for two years.

Basing themselves in Lamberton while exploring the beautiful surroundings, guests can expect to pay $24,4 per night, only a cent cheaper than Angleton, Texas. On the downside, Lamberton is much farther away from a big city than its Texan counterpart, although its remoteness is exactly what makes it appealing for nature enthusiasts.

As for cultural activities, popular attractions include the Corn Carnival Day and other rural events.

3. Garretson, South Dakota

Yet another small city, Garretson has a population of 1,228 according to the 2020 census and owes its fame to the picturesque Split Rock Park, one of Minnehaha County’s most visited. In fact, it is only 23 miles northwest of Sioux Falls, the largest urban center in the state, making it a popular weekend getaway for locals.

When choosing to stay in Garretson as opposed to downtown Sioux Falls, nomads will not only get a much easier access to the town’s untouched nature, but also AirBnB fares that are about 82.3% lower. Instead of a crippling $130 nightly, budget nomads can find cozy rooms here for only $170,1 per week, or $24,3 per night.

If you’re a History lover, you might be interested to know Garretson is associated with the legendary outlaw Jesse James, being the site where he escaped a posse after robbing the First National Bank in Northfield.

2. Catlett, Virgina

You might have started to notice a running theme here. Once again, a small town features on this list, assuming the runner-up slot as the second most affordable AirBnB destination for long-term travelers: Catlett, a historical town an hour’s drive from Washington D.C., and one of the hidden gems in the state of Virginia.

Catlett houses a Historic District packed with late 19th and early 20th century landmarks, including a Gothic revival church built in the year 1872. Regarding accommodation, it is no wonder it is so popular among remote workers: it costs only $21.8 per night, or an average $610 a month, to live here as a nomad.

The town is particularly favored by those seeking culture, having been added to the National Register of Historical Places in 2008 due to its key role in the American Civil War.

1. Tulalip, Washington

The definitive winner, Tulalip (or Tulalip Bay) is an autonomous region of the State of Washington under the jurisdiction of the native Tulalip Tribes. Providing visitors with another nature escape, it boasts a myriad of forest reserves and lakes, as well as being in close proximity to the landmark Hat Island.

The average price per night in Tulalip is a record-low $16.9 per night, making it the cheapest long-term rental offer on AirBnB in the United States by a large margin. In nearby Seattle, the average monthly fare would be a staggering $4,590, or 89% more expensive to book. Interestingly, Seattle remains one of AirBnB’s most popular nomad destinations, in spite of the soaring prices.

Ahead of booking a stay, visitors are encouraged to learn about the place’s history and its status as a protected, autonomous area of Washington.
