There’s probably no better travel experts than flight attendants. Most are on the road and up in the air for over half of the year, staying in new hotels in different cities along the way.

For travelers, one of the most important aspects of your trip is staying safe, whether you’re out and about or in your hotel room.

That being said, ever wonder if your hotel room stay is completely safe? A flight attendant shares her top tips on keeping your hotel room safe while traveling.

TikTok Video On Hotel Safety Tips

This flight attendant has gone viral on TikTok recently with one of her videos on hotel safety. She frequently posts videos featuring top travel tips and hacks under the account name CiCi_inthesky – sharing everything from packing tips, how to use air tags, and the importance of using hydration stations at the airport.

The viral video currently has over 6.6 million views on TikTok, where she shares her top tips on how to know if your hotel room is safe and how to keep it that way. Here’s her expert advice:

How To Make Your Hotel Room Safe In Less Than 2 Minutes
- Keep the door open and check the closet(s), shower, and behind the curtains: CiCi says that when she first enters a hotel room, she props her door open with her bag and checks all main areas of the hotel room to make sure they are free of intruders.
- Check if the phone works: Once the hidden spots in the hotel room have been checked, she recommends checking to make sure that the hotel room phone works (you want to dial out if necessary, of course).
- Cover the peephole: After that, close the hotel room door and check to make sure to cover the little spy hole on the door. If your hotel room peephole may not have a cover, CiCi says not to worry. Just use a piece of tissue paper to cover up the peephole so that people can’t see into the room from outside.
- Put the ‘Privacy’ sign outside the door: Even if you leave the room, keeping the privacy sign on the door is another way to keep your hotel room safe.
Try A Washcloth To Secure The Side Lock
- Put a washcloth through the side lock: Once you’ve locked your room from the inside, you’ll also want to add a layer of security by using the side lock. To make sure it’s secure, CiCi recommends in the video to put a washcloth through the bar on the side lock before shutting it so that someone can’t disengage the lock from the outside. She explains why here in this video.
- Leave your bag or suitcase in front of the closed door: Whenever you’re inside the hotel room, CiCi recommends putting your suitcase on the ground right in front of the door. This will help avoid someone from using a hanger or wire to unlock anything from the outside. It also adds that noise factor for extra protection.
More Hotel Safety Tips From A Flight Attendant
- Keep the hotel TV on with the volume up: When leaving her room, CiCi keeps the TV on with the volume up, “not loud enough to disturb people, just a normal volume I would watch TV on regularly.”
- Check the fire exits: Also, she mentions that it’s important to know where all of the fire exits are in the hotel. The map of fire exits should be taped to the back of the room door.
Don’t Reveal Your Room Number At Check-In

Another recommendation that CiCi offers is about staying safe during check-in. When you are checking in, make sure the front desk person doesn’t say your room number out loud and that you don’t say your room number, either.

And when going up to your room, CiCi says that it’s important to “always be situationally aware as you go to your room. If your gut is telling you that something is wrong, follow your gut.” This doesn’t mean you have to look paranoid all the time but to just be mindful of what’s around, which is typically the best way to stay safe when traveling in a hotel or anywhere else.

Ever since the world reopened, flight tickets and hotel fares have seen unprecedented hikes, making international travel a lot more expensive. This can partly be attributed to inflation, a pent up travel demand and the global economic upheaval, but multiple destinations shoulder some of the blame by openly discouraging budget travelers from returning.

Tourism may be back with a vengeance now that Covid has tailed off, but overall, the travel landscape is looking a lot different than it was in 2019. Flight deals are now much harder to find, and the concept of tourist taxation and entry fees, once restricted to only a handful of hotspots, is getting increasingly common.

One way or another, the upward trend has left the entire Economy Class wondering: are we even welcome at all?

First, Let’s Start With Airlines

This is hardly news, but the pandemic has permanently altered the travel industry and the way tourism is conducted. After grinding to a halt for the better part of two years, the sector is still dealing with the economic fallout from the crisis. To put it simply, both aviation and the hospitality sectors are in need of a revenue boost to ride out the storm.

While some perished already in the early days of Covid, namely Italy’s former flag carrier Alitalia, other airlines are banking heavily on a surging travel demand to stave off another year of heavy losses, or even worse, bankruptcy. The aggressive profit-driven approach has resulted in jaw-dropping fare increases, particularly on popular routes.

To give an example, Paris to New York flights are now up by a staggering 62%, driven by fuel costs, the ongoing air traffic congestion, and capacity caps imposed by a number of European airports, which in turn reduce seat availability and leads carriers to pass exorbitant costs down to customers. Judging by these recent estimates, even popular winter getaways are now under threat. Goodbye, Cancun?

We hate to break it to you, but yes, low cost travel is disappearing, particularly in Europe, where these changes are already being felt. As Michael O’Leary, Ryanair’s CEO has stated, the ultra-cheap tickets that made international travel accessible to millions of travelers for years are no longer sustainable. Instead, passengers should expect to pay 50% more in the near future.

According to Benedict Bradley, a Thematic Analyst at GlobalData, ‘the rising ticket prices will only compound the current cost-of-living crisis, and those already struggling could be priced out of the travel market‘. Bradley adds that high-end travelers will not necessarily be affected, but that ‘others will have to reconsider’ their vacations in the future.

These Hotspots Are Responding By Turning Into ‘High Quality’ Tourism Hubs

Airlines are not alone in their blatant shunning of economy travelers: a growing number of destinations previously perceived as budget-friendly are looking to reinvent themselves in the post-Covid era. One of them is Thailand, a nation that has repeatedly insisted it will not pick up where it left off as a backpacker haven.

Pretty soon, Thailand will have two levels of pricing, one for tourists, another for locals, besides introducing a controversial entry fee. The Thai Deputy Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has reportedly advised tourism operators to should focus on selling ‘premium’ experiences, as opposed to attracting ‘budget-conscious’ travelers.

Over in Oceania, New Zealand is also clamping down on low cost explorers, with Stuart Nash, the Tourism Minister, saying his country’s promotional efforts are now focused on big spenders. Backpackers will still be welcome, but not those who ‘put on Facebook how they can travel around our country on $10 a day eating two-minute noodles‘.

In Europe, a continent that has historically struggled with overtourism, a league of 23 European cities has urged the European Union to curtail short term rentals in a bid to disperse the crowds. More specifically, in France, visitors now need to prearrange their trip months in advance, and pay higher fees, in order to secure slots while visiting the country’s top tourist attractions.

And The List Goes On…

The city of Venice, in Italy, went a step further, set to be the first to establish a ticketing system for day-trippers, on top of an existing visitor tax, which can be as much as 35 euros for a one-week stay, per person. Closer to home, even Maui is restricting access to low and middle-income groups, by limiting the operation of affordable rental platforms, such as AirBnBs, leaving travelers no option but the island’s pricey luxury hotels.

Other countries considering a ‘backpacker ban’ include Fiji, a South Pacific archipelago, and Bali, Indonesia. Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister of Maritime and Investment Affairs, has been quoted saying the country ‘aims for quality tourism’, and they won’t allow backpackers to enter as easily once the country has fully reopened.

What Can Travelers Do To Reduce Costs While Traveling From Now On?

One thing all of the aforementioned have in common, in spite of the different set of measures? They are clearly targeting low cost travel by raising visitor expenses. Coupled with the surge in ticket prices, these measures have the potential to suppress affordable tourism. Moving forward, we strongly encourage travelers to:
- Plan international trips months in advance in order to avoid paying extortionate prices, both on flights and accommodation
- Have proof of funds available, as some destinations like France and Spain are requiring visitors to have a minimum daily sum
- Whenever possible, opt for alternative transportation that does not involve flying, such as trains or ride-sharing apps
- Purchase travel insurance ahead in order to be protected from the costs of last-minute cancelations and unforeseen delays

Canada And Australia Tourism Suffering As Many Countries Setting All Time Arrival Records

The world has finally started to reopen this year, leading to some of the most intense travel demand ever seen. It’s made for a chaotic travel season, but it’s also meant that many countries and destinations are breaking tourism records. Croatia, Greece, Austria, Los Cabos, Cancun, and many other areas are smashing previous arrival records from before the pandemic. However, not all countries see the same tourism growth. Specifically, Canadian and Australian tourist arrivals are still much lower than pre-pandemic levels.

How Bad Is It?

Canada and Australia are both far below their pre-pandemic visitor counts, but Australia is the worst. Travel data shows Australian arrivals down by 65% when compared to pre-pandemic levels. Likewise, Canada is down by 31% compared to pre-pandemic levels when combining international air arrivals and land arrivals from the United States.

What’s The Hold-Up?

Many countries around the world began dropping all Covid requirements as early as March in order to bolster tourism efforts. Canada and Australia were much more cautious in their approach. Both countries have had some of the harshest rules and regulations regarding Covid. The countries only recently started to ease requirements. Australia is now completely reopen but has only been that way for about a month. The country dropped all of its Covid entry requirements in early July, making it one of the slowest tourist destinations to do so.

Canada is worse regarding entry requirements and lagging far behind the most developed countries, as it still has several strict rules in place. Unvaccinated travelers still cannot visit Canada without compelling reasons, such as a death in the family. However, even if unvaccinated travelers can gain entry to Canada, they will be subject to Covid testing and a mandatory 14-day quarantine. As other countries completely strip away all Covid rules, Canada’s approach seems draconian. Especially after the continued loosening of guidelines from the CDC.

Canadian Travel Woes

As if the strict measures weren’t bad enough, Canada has hit several other bumps on the road to tourism recovery. Most notably, Toronto Pearson International Airport is currently the worst airport in the world for flight delays. Between May 26^th and July 19^th, Pearson had 52.5% of their scheduled flights delayed. Travelers are aware of how bad delays and cancellations have been this summer, but Toronto Pearson takes the cake. If Covid entry requirements weren’t holding travelers off from a trip to Canada, the state of its largest airport certainly might be.

Another significant roadblock for travel to Canada is the ArriveCAN app. The app was initially intended to serve as a Covid-19 screening app for travelers to prove their vaccination status before arrival. Non-compliant travelers were subject to delays, a quarantine, or even a $5000 CAD fine. The app has received criticism for privacy concerns and numerous bugs that have made its use frustrating for travelers.

Recently the app glitched out and told vaccinated travelers that they had to quarantine or face a $5000 CAD fine. Many travelers are unaware of the app or may not even have a smartphone. This leads to further delays at border control as short-staffed border control workers have to take time away to walk travelers through the app.

The Bottom Line

Canada and Australia had some of the strictest responses to the Covid-19 pandemic and have been slow to ease Covid-era requirements. When compared to countries like Greece, which doesn’t even require travelers to quarantine after testing positive, Canada and Australia’s responses look especially harsh. Although Australia has reopened completely and Canada is partially open, travelers have not felt comfortable going back to these destinations.

Travelers may have lost trust in these destinations and fear getting caught up in the mix of freshly implemented travel restrictions on holiday. While many tourist destinations around the world continue to outpace previous arrival records, it looks like Canada and Australia will be waiting a long time for their recovery.

Frontier Announces 5 New Non Stop Flights To International Destinations Starting At $69

Frontier Airlines made new announcements this Wednesday. The low-cost carrier will be serving new domestic and international routes. As part of the celebration, Frontier is offering tickets starting at $69!

The American company will be expanding services from Atlanta to fascinating destinations starting in November and December 2022. From Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) the carrier will serve these 5 destinations:
- Nassau, Bahamas
- San Salvador, El Salvador
- Kingston, Jamaica
- San Jose, Costa Rica
- Liberia, Costa Rica
In other press releases, the carrier also announced two new routes:

To take advantage of the low introductory prices, travelers must book soon, the special prices expire on August 23 at midnight. Customers must carefully read the terms and conditions.

Despite air travel chaos, Frontier Airlines keeps expanding its services. Only a few days ago, the carrier also announced 5 new Nonstop flights from Las Vegas starting at $69 as well.

More About The New Destinations From Atlanta

The Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, one of the world’s busiest airports, will offer more low-cost connections for travelers through Frontier Airlines.

Jake Filene, senior vice president, customers at Frontier Airlines, shared their excitement about these new routes and said: “We now offer an extensive range of flight options, including an impressive roster of international destinations, providing Atlanta-area consumers even more opportunities to enjoy our ‘Low Fares Done Right.’ With the addition of these new routes, Frontier now serves 36 nonstop destinations in total from ATL.”

These are the main details of the new routes from Atlanta to:
- Nassau, Bahamas (NAS): service starts on November 5, one time per week and the offering fare starts at $69.
- San Salvador, El Salvador (SAL): service starts on November 6, two times per week and the offering fare starts at $69.
- Kingston, Jamaica (KIN): service starts on November 7, two times per week and the offering fare starts at $89.
- San Jose, Costa Rica (SJO): service starts on November 17, two times per week and the offering fare starts at $79.

Frontier has announced its new route from Denver to West Palm Beach with pride since it’s the only carrier serving it. The new service will begin in November and the company has high expectations since Florida is a trendy destination for American travelers.

Daniel Shurz, senior vice president of commercial at Frontier Airlines, said: “We see the demand for our ‘Low Fares Done Right’ in both markets, and we’re honored to be the only carrier offering this exciting new service. With the addition of this new route, Frontier will fly to seven Florida cities from Denver, the most we’ve ever served.”

These are the main details of the new service from Denver International Airport to:
- West Palm Beach: service starts on November 6, two times per week and the offering fare starts at $69.
The other new international route will connect more American travelers to Mexico. The carrier will offer a new service from Orlando International Airport (MCO) to Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla Guadalajara International Airport (GDL). Emirates has big plans to ramp up its services for travelers.

Earlier this month, the airline announced that it is investing over 2 billion U.S. dollars for onboard improvements such as revamping its aircraft with the latest designs, technology, and other amenities in order to enhance its passengers in-flight experience. We’ve got all the details below.

New Passengers Services Will Launch This Month

“While others respond to industry pressures with cost cuts, Emirates is flying against the grain and investing to deliver ever better experiences to our customers. Through the pandemic we’ve continued to launch new services and initiatives to ensure our customers travel with assurance and ease, including digital initiatives to improve customer experiences on the ground,” said Sir Tim Clark, President of Emirates Airlines following the news.

“Now we’re rolling out a series of intensive programs to take Emirates’ signature inflight experiences to the next level,” he continued.

According to the airline’s press release, some of the new passenger services onboard on Emirates are scheduled to launch this August.

Improved In-Flight Services For All Passengers

While Economy Class passengers may not be getting champagne and caviar, all passengers on Emirates flights in 2022 will be able to enjoy services like new and improved menus, upgraded seats, and flight attendants who’ve just completed world-class hospitality training.

Among the new services for travelers on Emirates is ‘New Inspirations, New Menus’, which will be introduced for Business and Economy Class passengers starting September 1, 2022.

Emirates’ New Vegan And Sustainable Menus

The airline announced its new plant-based meals for its vegan passengers or to anyone else who’d like to sample vegan food on board.

The dinner menu includes pan-roasted king oyster mushrooms, a jackfruit biryani, as well as sliced kohlrabi garnished with burnt orange. For dessert, travelers can choose between a vegan truffle cake with hazelnut, pistachio, and gold leaf, or a green grape tart with candied rose petals, vanilla custard, and berry compote with yuzu pearls.

For travelers on Emirates flights departing from Dubai, the airline has launched a sustainable food menu initiative. Menu items will include fresh greens from Bustanica, which is currently the world’s largest vertical farm and located in Dubai.

Emirates’ Upgraded Cabin Interiors

According to Emirates, the biggest investment is an upgrade of its aircraft fleet interiors. Airline cabins will be “retrofitted with new or reupholstered seats, new panelling, flooring and other cabin features.”

Refurbishments will happen for all cabin classes and new Premium Economy cabins will also be installed on a total of 120 of Emirates’ aircraft.

Plans to refurbish the cabins is scheduled to begin this November.

Emirates’ ‘Cinema in the Sky’

First Class passengers will soon be treated to Emirates’ new and unique “Cinema in the Sky” experience. These passengers will get to choose between 5,000 channels on the airline’s ice in-flight entertainment system to make their very own movie day on-board, including snacks available on demand. The impressive snack menu will include lobster rolls, edamame, juicy sliders, and of course, salted popcorn.

New Ultra Low Cost Airline Launches Caribbean Flights Starting At $55

The first restriction-free summer may not have gone entirely according to plan, as an overwhelming surge in demand led to a capacity strain in numerous airports and airfares increased in response, but there might be a silver lining as we slowly approach the fall. In case you haven’t heard, an ultra-low cost airline is launching in September, and it looks set to give Spirit, JetBlue and the like a run for their money.

Ever imagined flying all the way to the teal-colored waters of the Caribbean for (far) less than your weekly grocery expenses? More specifically, for only $55? We know it’s difficult to believe, especially at a time when travel costs are exorbitant, but this will soon be a reality when Arajet, the Dominican Republic’s new carrier, finally enters the market:

Meet Arajet, The Caribbean’s First Official Low Cost Carrier

In exciting news for Caribbean enthusiasts, Arajet is finally operating its inaugural flight from its base in Santo Domingo to Mexico City on September 15, connecting the Hispaniola nation to one of the America’s busiest international hubs. Initially, Mexicans and Americans living south of the border will be the main beneficiaries of Arajet’s historically low fares, but expansion is already underway.

Following Santo Domingo-Mexico City route debut, Arajet has big plans for the remainder of the season. Those include, naturally, adding flights to the United States and Canada, two of the Dominican Republic’s strongest markets. Within the next few months, North Americans will be able to fly to Santo Domingo paying as little as $55 one-way, or $149 round-trip.

The ultra affordable fees can be attributed to Arajet’s choice of deploying the new ‘state-of-the-art’ Boeing 737 MAX-8 aircraft. As Business Wire states, they’re much more environmentally friendly and consume 14% less fuel. In other words, the airline will be able to cut down on all-time high fuel expenses, and subsequently ‘pass those savings on’ to customers.

As it was expected, the lowest possible fares do not automatically grant passengers the right to bring hold luggage on board, nor feature additional in-flight entertainment. Those can be added for a fee, but on the bright side, taxes are already included in the price breakdown. This means that, when booking tickets on Arajet.com, customers will not be tricked into paying more due to hidden fees.

Which Destinations Is Arajet Serving In North America?

But when, exactly, are U.S./Canada flights launching?

According to the Arajet schedule, service from both Toronto and Montreal in Canada will be available from October, while ‘additional’ flights to the States will be added ‘in the near future’. So far, the airline’s U.S. strategy remains a mystery, though it is safe to say it will face a fierce competition from America’s own economy carriers.

This year, Spirit led the way in launching 31 flight routes within and out of the U.S., further strengthening its position in the Caribbean, including the Dominican Republic. Similarly, JetBlue is taking an aggressive stance, having announced its highly-anticipated winter sale as early as January, starting at only $29, and securing slots in all four major Dominican entry points, including Santo Domingo and Punta Cana.

If Arajet seeks consolidation in the U.S. market, it will have to rise up to the challenge. In a sense, this could very well mean a new fare war, as airlines battle it out for the most alluring offers and cheaper flight deals. One way or another, customers would come out as the definitive winners. At the end of the day, this depends on how successful Arajet’s entry into the Canadian market is in October.

20 Destinations, 12 Countries

Besides Canada and the U.S., Arajet is adding flights from Santo Domingo to destinations all around North, Central, and South America, including Mexico City and Monterrey, in Mexico, Lima, in Peru, St. Martin, Aruba and Curaçao in the Dutch Caribbean, Medellin and Bogota in Colombia and many more.

In total, the company plans to widen its network in up to 20 destinations, in 12 different countries, only 3 months after the first Mexico City flight. According to CEO Victor Pacheco, Arajet signals the ‘rebirth’ of Dominican aviation, as it is projected to carry more than 7 million passengers ‘in approximately 5 years’.

Pacheco maintains that Arajet will help foster American connectivity ‘at the lowest fares’, being officially the first low-cost Caribbean-based airline, and by symbolizing the first step towards converting Las Americas International Airport, the Dominican Republic’s second busiest, into a ‘premier Latin-American air hub’.

Two more new non-stop flights are set to leave the United States bound for Turkey, as the ambitious Turkish Airlines looks to build on its route offerings both for the United States and to several other destinations around the world. The latest announcements come just a few months since the airline’s previous expansion into North America, following the addition of a new flight service to Seattle that launched in June.

Located between the three continents of Africa, Asia and Europe, Turkey has long since been a popular vacation spot for travelers from all over Europe, but has also recently begun trending with travelers from other parts of the world too – making it the perfect time for the airline to launch a series of new routes. Here’s everything we know so far about the airline’s new routes to the United States, plus a look at why the country is one of the world’s must-visit destinations at present.

New U.S.-Turkey Routes – What Travelers Should Know

Turkish Airlines has revealed that they will soon be launching two new, non-stop flights to the United States, giving American travelers even more options when it comes to visiting the enchanting destination that seems to be on everybody’s lips at the moment. From the airline’s main hub at Istanbul Airport (IST), Turkish Airlines will soon be flying direct flights to both Denver, Colorado (DEN), and Detroit, Michigan (DTW).

The addition of the new U.S. flights was revealed during the presentation of the results for the first half of the airline’s financial year to June 30th. Whilst there have not yet been any further details published about the frequencies or start dates of the flights to Denver and Detroit, their addition to Turkish Airlines’ catalogue of flights will be viewed as a positive step in the right direction for the travel industry, and are bound to get travelers excited about potential trips to the country.

The addition of the two new U.S. routes will be the airline’s fourth expansion into the country in just over a year, following on from the launch of routes to Newark (EWR) in May 2021, to Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) in September 2021, and to Seattle (SEA) back in June of this year. It takes the airline’s total number of routes to the U.S. up to 12, two more than the 10 destinations served back in July 2019, offering a total of more than 88,000 two-way seats between the two countries.

The airline is rapidly expanding its operations following years of pandemic-related disruptions, with the following international flights also planned by the airline:
- Kraków (KRK), Poland
- Palermo(PMO), Italy
- Nantes (NTE), France
- Coruna (LCG), Spain
- Makhachkala (MCX), Russia
- Lankaran (LLK), Azerbaijan
- Atyrau (GUW), Kazakhstan
- Sialkot (SKT), Pakistan
- Aswan (ASW), Egypt
- Hargeisa (HGA), Somaliland
- Port Sudan (PZU), Sudan
- Abha (AHB), Saudi Arabia
The ability to fly easily between top European destinations such as Italy, France and Spain, and Turkey, could make for some unforgettable vacation possibilities in the future.

Digital nomadism may be the number one trend worldwide right now, but it’s clear some destinations are far outpacing others when it comes to adapting to this reality, simply by loosening their once-strict immigration curbs, or even launching new visas for the category. Now, the numbers are in, and this one tiny country has ticked all the boxes, being crowned the best for long solo travel in the post Covid world.

Out of 14 destinations listed by Elite Daily, Costa Rica came out ahead as the best place to travel ‘for a month alone’. In order to reach a consensus, the team talked to experts at Next Vacay, Expedia and Hotels.com, who shared some of the tendencies in travel they’ve been noticing in recent months, and looked at other relevant data that pointed to Costa Rica as the definitive winner.

According to Elite Daily, these renowned platforms agreed on naming Costa Rica the world leader in long-term solo traveling. In fact, Expedia claims it beats all the others to the number one spot as it is ‘equal parts nature-filled serenity and one-of-a-kind adventures‘. Again, these remarks highlight Costa Rica’s strong appeal among nature seekers.

Other recent reports by the booking platform Hostelworld.com seem to support Expedia’s statements, after it concluded that 74 per cent of solo travelers listed ‘natural world experiences’ as their top priority going abroad following Covid. Unsurprisingly, a growing number of them is feeling a magnetic pull to Costa Rica, and Central America on an extent, due to the wild nature found there.

What Makes Costa Rica So Attractive To Solo Travelers?

More specifically, Costa Rica fills in all of the following criteria:
- Good public transportation
- Accessibility*
- Safety
- Variety of things to do once inside the country
*It is an incredibly well-connected hub, boasting flight connections to numerous destinations in the United States, Canada, and across the entire Caribbean

Additionally, living in Costa Rica is much more affordable than living in the States or Europe. Americans can comfortably spend a whole month living on a $2,000 budget, or even a much-lower $1,500, depending on overall spending and accommodation choices. Seeing that rent in Costa Rica tends to be roughly 71% lower as well, we can definitely see why solo travelers are flocking into this Central American gem.

What Are Some Of The Country’s Highlights?

Although it is fairly small compared to the likes of the U.S. and Mexico, Costa Rica has 27 national parks within its national territory, besides being home to roughly five per cent of the world’s entire biodiversity. Yes, it is famous for the extent of its jungles, but cloud forests, dry forests, rainforests, coral reefs and many other wonders also enrich the country’s natural treasures.

On the downside, at least for nomads looking to stay a while longer, Costa Rica has a less-than-impressive fixed broadband speed, with Speedtest ranking it at number 63 globally, at 53.67 Mbps. It still fares better than its strongest competitors, like Mexico (number 77) and Belize (number 86), but it’s well behind the U.S. (number 8) and Canada (number 22).

That’s not to say internet is unbearably slow in Costa Rica. It is, after all, in the same league as the wider Caribbean, and even faster than Mexico’s. So don’t worry, you’ll get your job done as decent, reliable Wi-Fi is available in a majority of settings – except when you’re out there braving the jungle. In that case, we recommend you buy a local SIM.

If you’re planning on going on a sunny break this January, you may want to set aside some money right away, as waiting to book until it’s winter may prove a bigger issue than it once was (especially if you’re on a budget amid the pandemic-led global recession).

Trust us when we say that, this year, winter travel will be a luxury many will not be able to afford unless they get ahead of the curve.

Traveling is getting increasingly expensive. Largely due to the ongoing economic crisis and high inflation, it is far more challenging for the average American to go on a vacation today, whether domestically or internationally, as the costs keep piling up. This is why, now more than ever, booking early is key to avoid paying exorbitant fees.

Here is what the most recent data show us:

The Cost Of Travel Continues To Rise Along With Inflation

According to respected deal-finder website Hopper, post-summer airfares will be 17% higher than they were in 2019. This number that may not sound too alarming, but it should not be underestimated, as it can surely affect the plans of budget travelers, particularly families, who will be paying $143 more on each ticket purchased throughout the season.

That is, of course, a rough estimate and most importantly, a nationwide average. As we have seen with New York lately, some cities will be feeling the sting harder than others: in the busy Eastern Coast hub, some international routes are up by as much as 62%, making it the most expensive U.S. city for air travel by a large margin.

Prices will continue oscillating throughout winter, and according to experts, those who are planning to travel during during the period are best advised to start looking for deals now. Scott Keyes from Scott’s Cheap Flights is one of those encouraging vacationers to ‘look ahead to those winter holiday flights’.

For Keyes, customers risk seeing further price hikes the longer they wait to book, especially when inflation, coupled with the overwhelming pent-up demand for travel, keeps causing the cost of travel to skyrocket. He then proceeded: ‘When are swimsuits on sale? In the winter. When are coats on sale? In the summer. It’s the same idea with winter holiday flights‘.

The Longer You Wait, The Harder It Will Be On Your Wallet

Furthermore, a joint study by CWT, a travel management company, and the Global Business Travel Association, travelers should expect airfares to continue on an upward trend for the remainder of 2022 and into 2023. This seems to corroborate other data suggesting travel will get steadily costlier in winter, following a brief reduction in the fall.

This new projection, which focuses mainly on business travel, but still offers an insight into air travel trends, estimates that 2022 will see a 48.5% increase in prices overall, compared to previous years. Additionally, 2023 will rise by 8.5%, totaling a staggering 57% for the post-Covid era compared to previous years.

In other dispiriting news, it’s not just more expensive tickets that need to be taken into account:

Hotel Fares Are 33% More Expensive In The US

Hotels and tourist accommodation in general will be another decisive factor. CWT is predicting hotel rates to be 18.5% more expensive this year, and another 8.2% in the next, for a combined 26.7%. To put it simply, those looking for rooms at the last minute will pay the highest possible rate due to the cumulative inflation.

In the popular winter hotspot of Miami, hotel stays already cost 55.6% more in April and May than they did compared to the same period in 2019, being the worst-affected domestic destination out of all the surveyed markets. In the wider U.S., a 33% uptick was noted. As assessed by the CWT, ‘the cost of labor, food and beverage, and energy are all going to drive hotel rates up‘.

So yes: if you’re dreaming of that beautiful all-inclusive in early January, or simply making plans to visit family over Christmas now that most social restrictions have been axed, you better make a reservation immediately.
