Air Canada and United Expand Travel Connections Between Canada And The U.S.

Air Canada and United Airlines recently announced that they would be working together to expand their alliance and bring more benefits to their customers. Both companies agreed on providing more flight options and optimizing travel schedules for passengers in the transborder market.

The airlines will connect 38 codeshare destinations in the United States and eight in Canada, extending both carrier’s networks. The new connections will be accessible to customers through the carriers’ websites and apps.

Mark Galardo, Senior Vice President of Network Planning and Revenue Management at Air Canada, said: “United is a world-class airline and we are pleased to significantly expand our well-established partnership to further enhance the customer journey between Canada and the U.S. by offering more choice, greater convenience, and an improved airport experience.”

And added: “This agreement marks a new phase in our evolving relationship that will speed the recovery from the pandemic and strengthen both carriers. It will also enable us to optimize our hubs and schedules and to broaden our global network connectivity to maintain our leadership in the market.”

According to the information shared in the press release, this alliance expansion will offer more benefits for frequent travelers memberships of both companies’ programs, Aeroplan and MileagePlus, and also regular customers.

It’s great news for American and Canadian travelers. Besides offering a greater flight variety, both carriers commit to improving services. United Airlines has recently ranked well among the best in-flight economy experience in the US, this extended alliance might improve both carriers’ services.

Benefits For Travelers

Now that the travel industry has been recovering and interest in travel has peaked across the globe, Air Canada and United Airlines expect to build stronger networks and provide more attractive services for travelers.

Patrick Quayle, Senior Vice President of Global Network Planning and Alliances at United, said: “As international travel continues to recover, this expanded partnership will provide an enhanced experience for all transborder travel.”

These are a few of the main benefits of the alliance expansion mentioned by the carriers in the announcement:
- Travelers searching for flights between the United States and Canada will find more options, more access to each airline’s seat inventory, and more convenient schedules.
- Members of the frequent flyer loyalty programs —Aeroplan and MileagePlus— will have more accrual and redemption options and also improved services.
- The airlines expect that this year travelers will be able to connect to 46 transborder codeshare destinations with more than 400 daily frequencies.
The carriers have also agreed to work together to improve customer policies and advance their sustainability objectives.

In 2019 the transborder market between the United States and Canada was the second largest international passenger air transportation market—measured by seats— across the globe.

The carrier expects the market to return to pre-pandemic levels, but it is yet to be seen. It might take a little longer than other destinations considering that Canada brought back random COVID-19 testing at airports just a few days ago and foreigners are still required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and download the ArriveCan app to enter Canadian territory.

More Alliances

United Airlines and Air Canada are both members of Star Alliance and the Lufthansa Group and have been expanding their networks, especially now that travelers are eager to explore the world.

A few months ago, Air Canada announced a new partnership with the Mexican airline Aeromar to provide more travel opportunities for Canadian and Mexican travelers. Mexico is one of Canadian travelers’ favorite vacation destination.

United Airlines, on the other hand, has also invested in transatlantic expansions. The carrier restored an abandoned connection —paused for six years— and recently announced that will be resuming routes to Norway.

And, in September, travelers will be able to take a non-stop flight from New York -Newark—where United opened its largest and most incredible club lounge— to Norway.

A new report from FinanceBuzz has revealed the top 5 airports with the cheapest average fares and which airports are the most expensive to fly out of. The study looked at the 45 most busy airports in the United States and learned which ones were the best to fly out of for travelers trying to save money.

It isn’t always possible to choose a different airport to fly out of, especially for travelers in cities with only one option. However, some airports with the cheapest average fares were from cities with more than one airport. When researching an upcoming trip, this data provides one more avenue to pursue the ultimate savings. With inflation on the rise and travel costs growing, any method for saving money is worth investigating.

Top 5 Airports With The Cheapest Average Fares

1) Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport (FLL) – Florida

               Average Airfare: $233.36

FLL is a popular airport serving both Fort Lauderdale and the Miami area. There are three airports you could use in Miami, and two of them rank in the top five for the cheapest average fares. If flying out of Miami, Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport (FLL) and Miami International Airport (MIA) are both likely going to be cheaper than using the area’s third airport, Palm Beach International (PBI).

2) Orlando International Airport (MCO) – Florida

               Average Airfare: $241.01

MCO is one of the busiest airports in the United States and serves as the gateway to world-famous theme parks like Disney World and Universal Studios. Two airports serve the Orlando area, with Orlando Sanford International Airport (SFB) being the second. If flying out of Orlando, MCO will likely be the cheaper option.

3) Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) – Nevada

               Average Airfare: $247.53

Last year, LAS ranked as the number one airport for cheapest average fares. However, MCO and FLL have moved up the list to claim the title. LAS still offers some of the cheapest fares in the country, though. Several other airports serve the Las Vegas area, but LAS offers the cheapest average fares. The remaining Las Vegas airports didn’t breach the top 45 airports with the cheapest average fares.

4) Miami International Airport (MIA) – Florida

               Average Airfare: $263.76

The second airport on the list serving the Miami area, MIA, is almost as busy as Orlando International airport. The airport is slightly closer to Miami’s city center than Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport (FLL). However, if the fares from FLL are significantly cheaper when researching, getting into the city is not much different from either airport.

5) Tampa International Airport (TPA) – Florida

               Average Airfare: $270.88

Tampa International Airport (TPA) serves the area alongside St. Petersburg–Clearwater International Airport (PIE) and is the closest to the city center. Fares are likely to be cheaper flying out of TPA. Still, travelers may find the occasional deal that is better out of PIE through the budget carrier Allegiant, which does not serve TPA.

Travelers are sure to find some of the better deals when flying out of the airports listed above, but it is also important to know which airports to avoid, if possible. The airports below ranked at the bottom of the list for airports with the lowest average fares.

Having valid passports is crucial for every traveler, but having a powerful valid passport is even better. Going through visa procedures and travel limitations can be very frustrating and add stress to any travel plan.

But how powerful is your passport? Henley & Partners, an international agency specializing in residence and citizenships, recently published its annual ranking of the most powerful passports in the world.

A group of experts from the company considered data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and its own historic data —gathered during the last 17 years— and most recent mobility reports to get the most accurate information available at the moment.

The index includes 199 different passports that were compared to 227 destinations across the world and the most powerful are the ones with fewer visa requirements.

Useful information for travelers, especially for US citizens with dual nationalities currently waiting for months to renew their passports. Here’s a summary of the results:

The 10 most powerful passports in 2022

Travelers holding passports within this list are the luckiest and can travel to more destinations than the majority of the countries listed.
1. Japan: The World’s most powerful passport can access 193 without a visa.
2. Singapore and South Korea: Can access 192 countries without a visa.
3. Germany and Spain: Can access 190 countries without a visa.
4. Finland, Italy, and Luxemburg: Can access 189 countries without a visa.
5. Austria, Denmark, Netherlands, Sweden: 188 countries.
6. France, Ireland, Portugal, and the United Kingdom: 187 countries.
7. Belgium, New Zealand, Norway, Switzerland, and the United States: 186 countries.
8. Australia, Canada, Czech Republic, Greece, and Malta: 185 countries.
9. Hungary: 183 countries.
10. Lithuania, Poland, and Slovakia: 182 countries.
Asian and European countries take the lead on the best passports to hold in 2022. Other popular citizenships among residents in the United States were also featured in the global ranking: Mexico ranked 24 with access to 159 countries, China ranked 69 with access to 80 countries and India ranked 87 with access to 60 countries.

Compared to Japan, the US passport needs a visa to visit more countries. Destinations like Bolivia, China, India, Iran, Japan, Tukey, and Venezuela require visas for Americans but not to Japanese citizens.

The Worst Passports 2022

Travelers with unique citizenships in other nationalities with the worst international relationships are not that lucky.
1. Afghanistan: ranked last place, 112, and can only access 27 destinations without a visa.
2. Iraq: ranked 111 and can access 29 destinations without a visa.
3. Syria: ranked 110 and can access 30 destinations without a visa.
4. Pakistan: ranked 109 and can access 32 destinations without a visa.
5. Yemen: ranked 108 and can access 34 destinations without a visa.
6. Somalia: ranked 107 and can access 35 destinations without a visa.
7. Nepal and Palestinian territory: ranked 106 and can access 38 destinations without a visa.
8. North Korea: ranked 105 and can access 40 destinations without a visa.
9. Libya, Kosovo, and Bangladesh: ranked 104 and can access 41 destinations without a visa.
10. Sudan: ranked 110 and can access 30 destinations without a visa.
Arab countries and from the Middle East were featured as the most unfavorable citizenships to travel the world.

More About The Index

Another interesting feature of the reporting platform is an interactive option called “Compare my passport” that allows travelers to compare different passports —up to four— and also see in more detail which countries require or not visas and what kind of visa, if a regular visa or just an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA).

Regarding the criteria, in order to publish the Henley Passport Index, experts go through a research process and analyze data throughout the year with mechanisms to detect policy shifts.

They also used a scoring system depending on the visa requirement: destinations that don’t require a visa or when the visa can be obtained upon arrival or with an eTA —when no government approval is required before travel— got 1 point, and destinations that required a visa or an e-Visa got 0 points.

One of the great joys of traveling is trying out new and exciting foods in the culture in which you immerse yourself. However, things don’t always work out after a delicious meal in a beautiful setting. Sometimes the result is far from beautiful. Trying new foods in a new place can lead to stomach problems or food poisoning, and nobody wants to be sick on their vacation. A recent study from Radical Storage revealed the top ten destinations where Americans are most likely to experience stomach troubles, and some of the results may surprise you.

65% of the Americans surveyed reported that they had experienced stomach sickness from eating or drinking while traveling. Of those who experienced stomach issues, over half said that it ruined 2-3 days of their trip. When spending hard-earned money to take a break from the day-to-day, a stomach bug can certainly do some serious damage to your wallet and your vacation. Below are the destinations Americans are most likely to have stomach issues and the percentage of respondents that reported having problems there.

According to the study, the older you are, the less likely you are to experience stomach problems while traveling. This seems counter-intuitive since statistics tell us that you are more likely to experience health issues as you age. However, younger travelers are often more adventurous and willing to take risks with food and drinks. 31% of respondents who had gotten sick reported that they were confident they got sick after eating food from a vendor that was not a restaurant, such as a street food vendor.

Income also played a role in who fell ill and who did not. Respondents who earned more than $80,000 per year reported the least amount of stomach problems, implying that spending more on food and beverages decreases the likelihood of sickness. However, it’s impossible to prevent food-borne illnesses 100% of the time. Even five-star restaurants will have the occasional ingredient that ends with a customer being sick.

The clear “winner” for destinations where you are likely to experience stomach problems was Mexico, with 43% of respondents reporting that they had a problem there. Of those respondents, 31% said they would avoid future vacations to the area based on their experience. Many have heard of Montezuma’s Revenge, usually picked up from drinking tap water in Mexico. The illness only affects tourists and visitors as those native to the area are resistant to the bacteria that cause it. When traveling internationally, it is good practice to research whether or not the local tap water will affect you and try to stick to bottled water if you are uncertain. Despite the risks, 31.5% of respondents said that they would be willing to drink tap water while on vacation.

How To Prevent Stomach Illnesses

While there are never any 100% guarantees, you can take steps to protect yourself from falling victim to stomach illnesses while on vacation. Many Americans are not guaranteed vacation time, so making use of every moment while traveling is essential. Here are a few things you can do to lessen your chances of experiencing stomach trouble.
- Research the tap water. Many countries have tap water that is safe to drink for Americans. Still, knowing if your destination falls in that category is essential before you head out.
- Never eat undercooked meats.
- Stay hydrated. Your stomach functions best when adequately hydrated, so keep drinking water throughout the day.
- Wash your hands. If there is one thing that Covid drilled into everyone’s brains, it was to wash your hands. Gastroenteritis (the stomach flu) is most often transmitted by hands. If you are unable to wash, consider using hand sanitizer.
Regardless of your destination, if you take proper precautions, eat from reputable restaurants and groceries, and do your research, it is unlikely you will run into trouble.

According to a survey by Bankrate, only 2 out of 10 travelers were able to complete their trips without any travel problems during the month of June. As summer has unfolded, there’s been turmoil in the aviation sector as airports and airlines have struggled with short-staffing. A significant increase in travel demand has made it difficult for the small amount of staff available to keep up. And to add fuel to the fire, inflation is higher than ever, making life more difficult for all travelers and airlines alike. As a result, about 80% of travelers surveyed reported some type of travel-related issue during their trips during the month of June.

- 57% of travelers reported higher costs than they were used to
- 26% reported difficulty finding availability with accommodations and flights
- 29% reported long wait times
- 27% reported unsatisfactory customer service
- 14% reported the loss of money due to canceled or disrupted plans
So What Can You Do?

While there is no way to 100% guarantee that you will complete your trip without disruption, there are ways to mitigate your risk. Before embarking on any travel, it is essential to know your passenger rights, what to do in case of lost luggage, and how to minimize your chances of losing luggage.

Combating Higher Costs

Unfortunately, inflation is higher than it has been in four decades. As a result, finding flights and accommodation that match previous year’s vacation budgets can be difficult. This summer, in particular, may be worth looking into a cruise, as it is likely the best value for money vacation this year. For costs while traveling, it can be tougher to save when prices are high. To minimize costs, be sure to use a credit card that doesn’t charge foreign transaction fees, try sticking to local foods that are often more affordable, and take advantage of attractions that offer free admission.

Combating Low Availability

It can be difficult to travel when nearly everything is already booked, but not all hope is lost! Here are a few things you can try when having difficulty finding accommodation.

There isn’t a way to force a service representative to ensure you have a good experience. Still, there are things you can do to heighten your chances of a good experience. As hard as it may be, staying positive throughout the interaction will do more for your case than anything else. Aviation staff have had a tough year, and they are much more likely to be on your side of an issue if you are easy to deal with and explain your situation efficiently. If you run into bad customer service and your problem remains unsolved, escalate the case until you’ve got what you need.

Combating Monetary Loss From Cancelled or Disrupted Plans

It’s nice when everything goes according to plan, but you should plan for the worst this summer. As cancellations and delays continue to interrupt travel plans, it is more important than ever to ensure you are protected. One of the best ways to financially protect yourself when planning a trip is to get travel insurance. Travel insurance often covers some of the “non-refundable” items on your trip’s checklist.

Germany’s Busiest Airport Is The Latest To Add Flight Limits To Combat Travel Chaos

Shortly after Amsterdam and London’s airports announced they would add a capacity cap in order to help air traffic operators cope with the surging travel demand, Germany’s busiest airport has announced it will be joining them in limiting daily flights. If you’re due to fly via Frankfurt International in the coming weeks, we advise you to check your flight status ASAP.

Since summer started, European airports have been under severe pressure as passenger numbers skyrocket unexpectedly, at a time when staffing constraint is widespread, directly impacting operations and resulting in other operational issues. Now, yet another airport, one of Europe’s best equipped, has reached a tipping point:

Europe’s Summer Of Travel Chaos Has No End In Sight

The lifting of Covid rules has opened the travel floodgates after they remained shut for the better part of two years. Travelers again have unrestricted access to the world’s top tourist destinations, from the sunny Caribbean to the History-packed Europe. One major downside? The industry wasn’t at all prepared for what turned out to be its busiest summer in years.

It seems like the mass redundancies both airlines and airports resorted to at the peak of the pandemic has come to bite them. Even though confidence in travel has been reinstated and millions of people are now looking forward to flying again, there simply isn’t enough pilots, flight attendants, air traffic controllers and even border officers to manage the unprecedented influx of passengers.

As a result, two thirds of European airports are experiencing some kind of disruption, whether it’s multiple flights delayed or cancelled or logistical challenges. Not even Europe’s busiest hubs, which were supposed to be better prepared for such events, have come out unscathed. They are, in fact, among some of the worst for delays in the whole continent.

This is why Frankfurt has been forced to take urgent action. Since July 19, Germany’s main international airport has a new flight limit in place. The number of take-offs and landings is limited to 88 per hour, meaning airlines will not be allowed to increase frequency on Frankfurt routes for the time being, and will be forced to trim down their schedule with immediate effect.

To put it simply, a series of cancellations is due.

Frankfurt Hopes The Hourly Cap Will Help Stabilize The Situation

Jens Ritter, Lufthansa’s CEO, praised the move, stating that Frankfurt Airport still suffered from reduced staff and resources even after an increase in capacity for ground handling services, and multiple schedule reductions. Flight cancellations will, of course, be a byproduct of that, but that is a price the airport is willing to pay to normalize the situation.

Those will help ‘stabilize’ things and contribute to an ‘even reduction’, in Ritter’s words, with the revised flight schedule better reflecting the new reality. Right now, passengers traveling into or out of Frankfurt International are advised to check their flights have not been axed, or changed to a later time or date, following the introduction of the hourly cap.

Not all airlines will be happy with Frankfurt’s short-term solution to the problem, though. Just last week, Emirates publicly rebuked a similar decision by London Heathrow, being one of several major airlines whose summer plans were disregarded after a 100,000-daily flights limit started being enforced.

Emirates defiantly opposed Heathrow, stating it planned to operate as scheduled and calling the airport ‘unreasonable’. The rhetoric has since changed, and the UAE’s flag carrier have agreed to cooperate over the next couple of weeks in smoothing operations, but the news coming from Frankfurt will surely not go down well with them – or any other more critical airlines, for that matter.

So far, no major carrier has rebelled against this new flight limit. Additionally, as things stand, Frankfurt is enjoying its busiest month since Covid was declared a pandemic: in July, a total of 5 million passengers used it for travel, still 24.1 per cent lower than pre-pandemic figures, but a whopping 181 per cent increase year over year.

Maya Train Set To Connect The Yucatan Peninsula Like Never Before

An exciting new railway system is set to be unveiled in Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula in 2023 after the government removed roadblocks surrounding its development. The controversial project will connect the popular hub of Cancun with countless towns, cities, and sites around the region like never before.

Cancun, along with the likes of Playa del Carmen and Tulum, is an incredibly popular destination for sun-seeking vacationers but suffers from a lack of connectivity with the wealth of cultural attractions in its surrounding area. The vast majority of visitors to the region have their sights set on an all-inclusive resort in the hotel zone and rarely venture out unless on an organized tour.

The new railway project, The Maya Train, is set to change all that. The sprawling 948-mile line will connect Cancun with the entire peninsula with ease, offering tourists and residents alike the chance to explore the region with independence, transforming the landscape for the industry. The line will pass through the states of Quintana Roo, Yucutan, Chiapas, Campeche, and Tabasco.

If estimates are correct, tourists will now be connected with as many as 190 individual cultural sites, archeological zones, or tourist attractions. 46 Mayan sites will be accessible, as well as 14 of Mexico’s “Magical Towns,” which are villages or towns noted for their cultural significance or beauty.

The final product will be a large loop with two offshoots to reach destinations slightly further out and will feature twenty individual train stations at strategic points around the peninsula.

Tourists can expect the typical big names to all have their own station. Cancun, Tulum, Playa del Carmen, and Puerto Morelos, all the major beach destinations, will be connected along their short strip of the Mexican Caribbean coast, opening the opportunity for resort loyalists to try a quick trip to another town with ease.

More exciting is the new kind of travel experience it will provide regular visitors and new ones alike. Cancun is generally avoided by cultural tourists due to the lack of historic sites in the immediate vicinity and the emphasis on luxury and resort life. When the system is completed, travelers will now be able to visit the likes of Merida, recently named one of the best cities in the world to visit.

Merida highlights a drastically different experience from the beachside resorts, offering a chance to try more local food, understand the colonial history of the area, and move at a different pace than the hotel zones.

There’s also a stop for the world-famous Mayan ruin, Chichen Itza, one of the wonders of the world. Previously, if visitors to Cancun or Tulum had intended to visit the site, the easiest way would have been to book an organized tour or rent a car. The train simplifies the accessibility issues of visiting, adding to the value of a stay anywhere in the peninsula.

Other interesting stops on the line include often neglected Quintana Roo capital Chetumal and several other lesser-known inland towns.

The project hasn’t been without its controversies, however, and dissenters have successfully stalled its construction several times. Environmentalists and historians have scorned the seemingly rushed development of the Maya Train. Many claim the construction in some areas is bulldozing through valuable undiscovered Mayan archeology zones, destroying pieces of Mexico’s cultural heritage.

Those protecting the environment are concerned about underground caverns and cenotes that will be destroyed in the process. Many of these caves were also sacred places for the Mayan civilization and could also be valuable archeology sites. Others have highlighted the destruction of rainforest areas in the region.

Mexico’s government is often accused for cutting corners for financial benefit, and it appears to have wrangled its way around any further roadblocks by declaring the project a “National Security Project,” which grants it priority over some of the cultural discrepancies that have been brought to light.

If all goes to plan, the train linee should be functional by the end of 2023, although it is likely it may be extended into 2024 along with Tulum’s new airport.

CDC Ends Covid Program For Cruises, Now Cruise Lines Decide Their Own Rules

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) of the United States updated its website on Cruise Ship Guidance and announced the removal of the monitoring of the COVID-19 protocols for cruises in the country.

The agency stated: “As of July 18, 2022, CDC’s COVID-19 Program for Cruise Ships is no longer in effect and this page will no longer be updated. New guidance for cruise ships to mitigate and manage COVID-19 transmission will be available in the coming days. For more information, please see the cruise travel.”

In March, the CDC had already removed travel advisories for cruises —meaning that vaccinated travelers were no longer advised to avoid cruises—, but the agency still monitored cruises and suggested a Covid-19 program.

Under the CDC covid-19 guidelines for cruises, cruise companies were advised to follow recommendations, and the agency supervised cruises and assigned vessels different colors depending on risks and covid cases detected onboard. Ships could also apply for the agency’s three voluntary programs: Not Highly Vaccinated, Highly Vaccinated, and Vaccination Standard of Excellence.

Now, the CDC will only provide guidance and suggestions, and cruises have the right to choose their own COVID-19 protocols.

What does it mean for travelers?

Cruise companies are no longer required to comply with the CDC’s programs, and have now the freedom to decide what the protocols on board will be. Travelers will now have to follow each cruise line’s rules and requirements and not the CDC’s advice.

Since the CDC’s update was recently shared —and surprised many in the industry—, cruise lines have not yet pronounced statements or changes related to this new announcement. Cruise companies will have to define what will be the best protocols for their own vessels, considering the routes, passengers, and even their own infrastructure and current sanitary measures.

The cruise industry is heading back to a “normal” experience, and probably travelers —vaccinated and non-vaccinated— will have fewer restrictions and fewer covid-testing requirements very soon.

Cruise Protocols Are Changing

Large cruise companies that made constant efforts to comply with the CDC’s programs might soon make changes and will probably be more flexible with travel requirements.

For example, the CDC’s requirements for cruises operating in US waters to be considered “Vaccination Standard of Excellence” or “Highly Vaccinated Ship” were exigent and precise, like “at least 95% of crew and 90% of passengers fully vaccinated or up to date with their COVID-19 vaccines”.

Meeting the suggested standards used to give cruise companies green categories and higher approval, but this is already changing.

Princess Cruises, the Carnival Corporation Brand, has already recently updated its protocol to expand options for unvaccinated travelers and ease restrictions despite the CDC’s program in the United States.

The company stated: “At Princess, we want to make your vacation as easy, hassle-free, and safe as possible. We respect that every guest has choices, and regardless of your vaccination status, we have amazing vacations for you to enjoy.”

Also, a few days ago, major cruise lines like Norweigan Cruises, Holland America, and P&O Cruises announced the removal of the pre-departure testing requirement.

Destinations Still Affect Restrictions

Travelers must remember that now COVID-19 restrictions will change in the United States and cruise companies will decide their own rules, but other countries still have strict demands and local measures that have to be respected.

Princess Cruises, in its recent update, also reminded travelers that the new flexible program does not apply to cruises stopping in Canada: “Please note that cruises that begin, end or visit Canada will require sailing guests ages 12 and above who are not Canadian citizens be fully vaccinated, unless they are granted a medical exemption.”

Vessels visiting the Caribbean must comply with local restrictions. Popular destinations like Antigua and Barbuda still required travelers to be vaccinated to disembark and provide a negative covid test, while Aruba, the Bahamas, and Barbados welcome unvaccinated travelers.

Qatar, a peninsula on the shores of the Persian Gulf is a travel destination filled with things to do and experience. Don’t know much about Qatar but feeling curious about what a trip would be like there? With the World Cup approaching in November 2022, we’re sure many of y’all are wondering what it’s like.

How Hard Is It on the Wallet?

Qatar definitely shouldn’t be your first choice if you’re looking to pinch pennies (or in this case, your riyals) on a trip. While it’s not the most expensive destination in the world, Qatar is a place for luxury livin’ for most who come to visit.

That being said, expats love Qatar’s tax-free status. Salaries are high here, so you expect some of the highest prices on rent and food in the Middle East. Here’s a little breakdown of the costs:

Food: The geography of Qatar means that most foods have to be imported, so most food items, especially international dishes, tend to come at a higher price than in the US and even the UK. According to some of the latest data, a three-course meal for two at an average restaurant will typically set you back about QR600 (about $165 USD). A meal at McDonald’s comes out to about $6.50 USD, which is about the same as what you would pay at home.

Accommodation: According to Nomadlist, the average AirBnB in Qatar costs a whopping $8,000 USD per month. But, it’s not impossible to find something on a more modest budget. You can get a 2-star hotel for less than $100 USD a night in Doha, and there are plenty of stylish hotel stays near the city center (with a pool, of course) that you can grab for around 300 QR (about $85). Summer deals are currently available, but note that prices will likely skyrocket when the World Cup comes to town.

Transportation: Most people get around by car, and gas is very cheap in Qatar. If you want to use public transportation, the standard cost is between 3 and 4 QR (about 1 USD) for a one-way fare in the capital city of Doha, and between 4 and 9 QR outside of Doha. If you want to explore the outskirts, book a tour that comes with transportation to and from your hotel.

How Friendly Are the Locals?

Qataris are well-known for their hospitality, and are always eager to welcome foreigners and show them their country. While helpful and hospitable, visitors are also expected to respect and abide by the local customs. So if you read up before your trip and follow the major dos and don’ts, you’ll be just fine.

Customs And Culture: Do’s and Don’ts

This ‘dos and don’ts’ section is probably the most important part of our ‘Things to Know’ post for Qatar. Strap yourselves in, because there’s a lot of things to read up on before your trip. Keep this handy for during your trip so that you don’t forget anything.
- No PDA: Any hugging, kissing, or anything physical in public with the opposite sex is not allowed in Qatar and can get you fined or banned. Holding hands and a cheek peck is okay if it’s between husband and wife, however.
- Dress modestly: Non-Muslim women aren’t required to cover themselves with a hijab or niqaab, but you’ll have to cover yourself before entering a mosque. Even though you don’t necessarily need to cover yourself in public, men and women alike are still expected to dress modestly (no short, no crop tops – having shoulders exposed is a no-no). As for bikinis (but nothing teeny tiny), best to save them for the hotel pool only as public beaches have the same dress etiquette as other public spaces.
- Same-sex relationships are illegal in Qatar.
- Tipping: If there’s no service fee added to the bill, then a 10% tip is appropriate.
- While some bars and clubs allow for drinking, drinking alcohol in public is illegal in Qatar.
Gestures to avoid. A number of physical gestures are considered very offensive in Qatar and can result in a fine or worse, so make sure to take note of these:
- DON’T do the thumbs up sign. While this is a casual greeting in Western culture, it is considered very rude in Qatar.
- Don’t cross your legs: especially when sitting in front of someone older or higher up.
- Don’t use one finger to gesture for someone to come over, like to call a waiter, for instance. As an alternative, use the palm of your hand. It’s also very rude to point at someone or even something.

Top Trending Things to Do in Qatar

From world-class shopping malls to museums and mangroves, a trip to Qatar is filled with wonders. Here are some of the top trending things to do for your trip:
- Al Thakira mangroves: Two hours away from Doha is this beautiful region of mangroves and other wildlife in Al Khor. Once there, you can rent a kayak to explore the area!
- Museum of Islamic Art in Doha: This gorgeous museum holds one of the largest collections of Islamic art in the world. You can also get some of the best views of the city’s skyline from the museum grounds (the MIA is currently closed and set for a big relaunch this fall.)
- Hit the beach: Being mostly seaside (and super hot most of the year) Qatar is a great place to explore the gorgeous beaches that stretch along the peninsula. Try Al Maroona and Fuwairit Beach for beautiful views, and Katara Beach for water sports that the entire family will love.
How Safe Is It in Qatar?

If you follow the rules and local customs, traveling in Qatar is relatively safe.

While there are still some reports of pickpockets in certain areas (maybe watch your bags and don’t bring out anything flashy if you’re in a large crowded space) know that Qatar has a low crime rate and you’ll be safe if you stick to the main areas and don’t venture out alone at night.

There are so many opportunities to experience Qatari culture and learn a bit of history on your trip. Start your adventure off by booking a once in a lifetime glamping trip to the nearby desert where you can sleep under the stars in a five-star, full-service campground. How Long Can I Stay?

At the time of writing, travelers from over 95 countries don’t need to apply for a visa if planning a short visit to Qatar. Travelers from the US, UK, and most of Europe will be given a visa on arrival which will allow them to stay for up to 30 days in the country, with the possibility to renew once to get 30 more days.

You just need to make sure your passport’s valid for at least six months from arrival and show an onward ticket (return ticket or to your next destination) at immigration. Check the Hamad International Airport immigration page for more detailed info.

While Qatar is a new player on the global travel scene, a trip here won’t disappoint. There’s plenty of amazing experiences to be had, food to eat, and things to learn. Arrive with an open mind and be welcomed by the unique sights and sounds of this beautiful region.
