However, the Eastern coast isn’t lacking in outdoor getaways either. Here are 10 state parks on the East Coast that are perfect to enjoy some fresh air.

1. Niagara Falls State Park

No list about state parks on the east coast would be complete without at least mentioning Niagara Falls State Park. This gorgeous park features one of the most well-known waterfalls in the world, the titular Niagara Falls. There are several ways to see the falls for yourself, including grabbing a drink at the restaurant that overlooks them or seeing the falls from below with a boat tour.

2. Vogel State Park

If you’re looking for a weekend getaway, head over to Georgia to experience Vogel State Park. This popular state park features a gorgeous lake, as well as campsites and hiking trails. 3. Torreya State Park

The latest editions of the U.S. News & World Report travel rankings have been released, with a list of the best destinations to visit in the U.S. issued as part of their findings. The list was created by using a 50/50 mix of both user scores and editorial staff scores, a wide range of criteria was considered before each destination found its spot on the list. Here’s a look at the destinations in the U.S. that made the top 10.

10. New York City

Not only a top destination in the U.S. but a major attraction the world over, New York City has long since been the poster child for a modern-day metropolis. Home to some of the world’s best eateries, museums, galleries, and events, New York City offers travelers a wealth of attractions that they’re unlikely to exhaust, even in several trips to the city.

If the skyscrapers and busy streets get a bit too much, travelers can retreat to Central Park, one of the most famous parks in the country and a true New York Landmark. The Big Island of Hawai’i has long been a popular place for tourists to visit. Featuring gorgeous beaches, an active volcano, and no shortage of high-quality resorts, it’s no wonder why. If you feel like you’ve already experienced some of the most popular things to do on the island, here are 6 more off-the-beaten-path options to check out!

1. Hike To Papakōlea Beach

You may be familiar with both white sand beaches and black sand beaches, but Papakōlea Beach offers an even rarer twist: it’s a green sand beach. There are very few green sand beaches in the world, and this beach is one of only two in the United States. The green hue comes from the presence of olivine when the beach was formed via volcanic activity, and it results in an almost otherworldly landscape.

This is a truly off-the-beaten-path beach. To get there, you’ll head to the southern tip of the island before embarking on a 2-mile hike to reach it. Visiting early is the best way to avoid crowds and ensure you get a good parking spot near the start of the trial.

2. Visit Pololū Valley

This stunning valley is located near the Kohala coast, and is an amazing place to both explore and get some photos. You can view the area from the Pololū overlook, but if you’re up for a short but fairly steep hike – about half a mile and 300’ of elevation gain – the black sand beach below offers arguably the best views.

To get to the beach, head to the overlook at the end of Highway 270. There’s a small parking area, as well as limited street parking options. If you do park on the street, make sure to head any no parking signs, as the area has several residential homes. From there, head down the trailhead towards the valley floor. It’s worth noting that while the ocean off the beach is gorgeous, it’s not a great choice for swimming – riptides and strong currents frequent the area.

Finally, make sure to bring plenty of water and possibly some snacks for the outing, as there aren’t any amenities along the trail or at the trailhead.

3. Go On A Submarine Tour

There are countless ways to see the beautiful waters that surround the big island of Hawai’i. Popular methods include boat tours, snorkeling, and kayaking. If you’ve already tired of those experiences, though, or if you’re looking for a more out-of-the-box way to explore the ocean, consider a submarine tour. Atlantis Adventures offers tours in several areas across the Hawai’ian islands, including in Kona on the Big Island.

4. Hawai’i Tropical Bioreserve & Garden

Hawai’i Tropical Bioreserve & Garden is a little more touristy than some of the other options on this list. However, it’s still more than worth a visit. This sprawling botanical garden feels – and looks – more like a tropical jungle than a garden. Hosting over a thousand kinds of plants, it’s no wonder why.

When heading out to the bio reserve, consider taking the scenic route (Old Mamalahoa Rd), to enjoy some stunning views before even arriving. This road is also typically easier to traverse by vehicle than the other route. The reserve doesn’t have a ton of amenities. Because of this, consider packing a small lunch or some snacks, as well as plenty of water, for your trip. In addition to being amazing to simply take in, it’s also a great spot to take photos. Better yet, photography is both allowed and welcomed in the reserve.

5. Tour Hiilawe Waterfall

This breathtaking waterfall plunges over 1,000 feet and is one of the largest waterfalls in Hawai’i. The best time to see it is after heavy rainfall when it will be flowing the strongest. During dryer spells, it is still generally flowing, albeit much more weakly. There are a couple of ways to see the waterfall.

You can head out by yourself, but the easiest way – and best way to ensure you won’t accidentally trespass on any of the private property surrounding the waterfall – is to head out with a tour group.

6. Explore Kaumana Caves State Park

Hawai’i is well-known for its volcanic activity that formed the islands. The most popular way to see examples of this is by heading over to Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park. While the national park is stunning, if you’ve already visited and you’re looking for additional places to visit, consider checking out Kaumana Caves State Park.

The caves are lava tubes that were created from a lava flow in the late 1800s. You can only head a short distance into the cave, as they eventually run under private property. Regardless, they’re still an interesting attraction to go see.

What Travelers Need To Know About The Monkeypox Virus Spreading In Europe

Just when you thought the world was ready to move on, and pandemic scares were well behind you, more trouble is brewing… This week, multiple reports have emerged of monkeypox virus outbreaks in Europe that are already prompting fears of a new global health emergency, especially in countries where the disease is not endemic.

As defined by the CDC, monkeypox is closely linked to the variola virus, which causes smallpox, and was first discovered in the continent of Africa in the late 1950s. While it has been circulating in a number of African nations ever since, where it is considered endemic, its surge in the Northern Hemisphere, where it is not yet rooted, is at the very least concerning.

Here is everything travelers need to know about Europe’s new potential health crisis, how it started, which countries are most affected, how dangerous this virus is, and how it is already impacting travel:

So Where Do We Begin?

Although monkeypox is not a novel pathogen like Covid-19, having been present in several African nations since its identification over 60 years ago, its sudden spread in Europe strongly indicates new community transmission in the continent. That is particularly worrying, as unlike citizens of 9 Sub-Saharan countries, herd immunity has not been achieved.

But where is it coming from and how did it reach Europe’s shores? As Dr. David Heymann, a leading advisor to the World Health Organization inferred, Europe’s new potential health threat can be traced back to ‘risky sexual behavior’ at two recent mass events that took place on the continent in recent days.

Corroborating Heyman’s findings, initial outbreaks were only reported among gay and bisexual men who attended raves in Belgium and Spain, but how exactly did the virus get there when attendees had no recent travel history in affected African nations? Interestingly enough, the UK was the first to report new clusters on May 7, and the virus could have in fact spread from there.

Since then, 56 cases have been identified in England. The UK government has called the current outbreak ‘significant and concerning‘, while still maintaining that the risk to the population remains ‘low’. Infections are usually associated with travel to West Africa, though recent cases have no travel links to any West African country.

As the UK government frames it, ‘it is possible they acquired the infection through community transmission’. Like in Belgium and Spain, recent cases were predominantly found in gay and bisexual populations, with no deaths occurring so far. Still, any individual can be affected, regardless of gender or sexual orientation.

Where Is It Present?

Besides the UK, Spain, and Belgium, monkeypox clusters have been found in several other nations in Europe and beyond, with the latest ECDC case count, published May 20, being:
- Belgium (2 cases)
- France (1 case)
- Italy (1 case)
- Portugal (14 cases)
- Spain (7 cases)
- Sweden (1 case)
Since then, cases in Spain have already bumped up to over 30, while the UK is already managing an outbreak of more than 50 cases, as mentioned above. However, as this is a rapidly-evolving situation, any data and information provided in this article can and will change, especially as more infections are confirmed.

So far, these are the European countries where clusters have already been identified. A majority of them are in Western Europe, though monkeypox will likely spread further into Eastern Europe due to community transmission. Over in North America, new cases have also been identified, with 3 so far in Canada and 1 in the United States.

How Dangerous Is Monkeypox And How Is It Transmitted?

Although it is not traditionally described as a sexually transmitted disease, monkeypox can be passed on during sex, regardless of protective measures, although the practice of not wearing condoms seems to increase infection risks. It can also be transmitted through close contact with someone who’s infectious or even contaminated clothing or linens.

As Dr. Heymann states, monkeypox usually spreads when there is close contact with the lesions of someone who is infected, with sexual contact having amplified that transmission. Symptoms include the following:
- Fever
- Body rashes
- Headaches
- Muscle aches
- Backaches
- Swollen lymph nodes
- Chills
- Exhaustion
Monkeypox rashes change during the course of infection and look a lot like chickenpox or syphilis. In the later stages of the disease, it forms a scab and then falls off, with some patients being left with scars afterward. Despite the unpleasant symptoms and the skin lesions, most people will recover with no long-term complications and ‘within a few weeks.

The fatality rate, gauged from cases in highly-affected countries in Africa, vary from 1% to 15%, and the highest risk of death is among young children. In a large study of 300 patients in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where most monkeypox cases are centered, the overall mortality rate was 10%, with unvaccinated children accounting for 15-20% of victims.

How Is Monkeypox Affecting Travel?

Despite having scrapped all Covid entry requirements this week, Belgium has become the first country in the world to introduce a mandatory 21-day quarantine for confirmed monkeypox patients, in response to the global surge. At present, close contacts are not being required to isolate, though they are ‘encouraged to remain vigilant’.

As a government statement reads, ‘infected persons will have to go into contact isolation until the injuries have healed’ and other symptoms subsided. The UK, one of the worst-hit countries, is also urging the infected to isolate for 21 days, though the British government stopped short of issuing a quarantine mandate for infected travelers.

As of yet, no travel bans have been enacted and Belgium, and most of Europe, remain open. Considering this is a new epidemiological concern and the actual number of infections is probably much higher than officially reported, travelers are urged to be cautious and educate themselves about prevention methods.

U.S. Issues First ESTA Price Increase Since 2015

The United States is increasing the cost of the ESTA waiver visa for incoming tourists. There have been rumors of a price increase for several months, but the final rule is effective from May 20, 2022.

The ESTA is an online system whereby nonimmigrant visitors planning to visit the United States under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) must obtain an electronic travel authorization before traveling to the United States.

The New ESTA Price

The Department of Homeland Security will increase the price of the ESTA from $14 to $21. The Federal Register announced the increased fee—which contains a $4 operational fee—in a recent statement.

The Department of Homeland Security said the travel promotion part of the charge was rising from $10 to $17. The additional $7 of the ESTA fee will support Brand USA. They are a public-private organization created to promote the United States as a tourism destination.

The new fee will begin on May 26, 2022.

It’s the first increase since 2015, and it will continue until 2027.

What Is The ESTA?

The ESTA is an automated system that judges the eligibility of travelers to the U.S.A under the Visa Waiver Program. The ESTA application contains biographic information and answers which help the Department of Homeland Security decide upon a traveler’s eligibility.

All travelers must submit their ESTA application before traveling to the United States. However, the Department of Homeland Security recommends travelers apply for an ESTA way before their journey begins.

Some travelers wait until the last minute, witness delays in approval, and have to postpone their trip. Travelers can avoid this by sorting their ESTA out early.

That’s why we recommend you apply for an ESTA as soon as you book your trip to the United States. Sometimes, your ESTA may be approved within minutes, but you shouldn’t risk it.

If you’re looking for a fun way to spend some time outdoors without even leaving the city, head over to Brooklyn to check out The Cliffs. This outdoor rock climbing is located on the waterfront near Manhattan Bridge. No experience is required, making this a great option for those looking to try rock climbing for the first time. This is also a great option for those looking for something adventurous but still offering plenty of safety precautions.

4. Check Out Thousand Islands

Thousand Islands not only lived up to its name but exceeds it. This collection of islands straddling the Canadian border is actually made up of nearly 2000 islands. While some of the islands are located in Canada, several are also located in the state of New York. There are countless things to do while exploring the area including visiting an old castle. This is a great option for a weekend getaway, as it is further from New York than some of the other options on this list – about a six-hour drive. The top trending vacation destinations around the world have been revealed. By calculating the increases in search volume for travel destinations on the popular social media site Pinterest, trend experts WeThrift have worked out which destinations around the world are trending amongst travelers and could be set to welcome huge crowds this summer. Here’s a look at the top trending destinations – and what you need to be able to visit.

Top Trending Destinations – Information For Travelers

Porto

Research carried out by WeThrift found that Porto, Portugal was the top trending destination in the world, with a 62% increase in searches on Pinterest.

A quintessential European weekend break destination, the colorful riverside town is more than worth a trip for any traveler, with millions flocking there to enjoy its famous pastries and traipse around its cobbled streets. To enter Portugal, travelers must show either proof of vaccination, proof of recovery, or a negative Covid-19 test result (taken within 72 hours for PCR tests or 48 hours for rapid antigen tests).

Corfu

Close behind Porto was the Greek island of Corfu, which had a 61% increase in search volume. With its pristine coastline, dramatic sheer rock faces, deep blue sea – and not to mention fresh, healthy cuisine – it’s easy to see why Corfu looks set to be a hit this summer. It’s also extremely easy to visit, with Greece having removed all of its Covid-19 related entry requirements.

Lake Como

With a 44% increase in searches, Italy’s spectacular Lake Como is the third most trending destination. With views of the huge, sprawling lake long since dominating the social media pages of travel bloggers and pages alike, it seems as though all that daydreaming of escaping to Como during lockdown is set to come true this summer. Like with Portugal, travelers must show either proof of vaccination, proof of recovery or a negative Covid-19 test result in order to be able to enter.

Mallorca

Known for its beaches, Spanish architecture, and wineries, the Spanish island of Mallorca is trending with a 35% increase in searches. The largest of the Balearic Islands, Mallorca’s charms have been wooing Europeans for decades, and is now firmly in the crosshairs of travel-starved people the world over. Travelers to Spain must be fully vaccinated – with a booster if the latest shot was taken more than nine months ago. The country recently made changes to allow unvaccinated travelers to enter with a PCR test taken within 72 hours or an antigen test taken within 24 hours.

Mykonos

The second Greek island to feature on the list, it seems travelers have been dreaming posing amongst a backdrop of traditional blue and white Greek buildings once more. Searches for Mykonos rose 32%, with the island equally as popular with young people embracing the party side of then as it is with families looking for a more laid-back experience.

Few cities are as breathtaking as Istanbul – an opinion clearly shared by the masses as it received a 26% increase in searches. The city has it all; from the historical remnants of empires gone by littered all over the city, to a thriving nightlife scene – not to mention sprawling bazaars, passionate locals and stunning views – Istanbul is worthy of a place on any traveler’s list. Fully vaccinated travelers with proof don’t need to test before entering, whilst unvaccinated travelers must show either a PCR test taken within 72 hours or an antigen test taken within 48 hours.

Having long since established itself as a firm favorite amongst travelers the world over, the most famous party island in the world looks set to go back into full swing this summer, with interest in Ibiza soaring by 26%. Like Mykonos, there’s more to their island than its clubs, with the north end proving to be much calmer and its beautiful beaches catering to all types of traveler.

With the vast majority of Thailand’s entry hurdles now removed, the wildly popular destination is back in business. Searches for Phuket – the country’s largest and most popular island – rose by 26%, with travelers keen to explore the nightlife of Patong or scenic beaches of Rawai, Kata and Nai Harn once more. All travelers to Thailand must have a Thailand Pass, which can be applied for here – but it looks as if this requirement could be on its way out over the next few weeks.

United Airlines Is Taking More Aggressive Action To Stop Rising Air Fares

In order to stop what is proving to be an unprecedented, and even disruptive, rise in air fares, United Airlines is ready to take more aggressive action to mitigate the impacts of the 2022 aviation crisis. Now, they are calling for an industry-wide investment in sustainable aviation fuel and advocating for an end to America’s dependence on foreign oil.

Flight tickets have skyrocketed as fuel is built into the price, and ironically, just when international travel finally resumed following two years of Covid restrictions. Airlines need the commodity to power their jets, and it is getting costlier across the United States, leading air fares to become more expensive as a consequence. At times, even prohibitively expensive.

United believes it’s time to address the issue and has offered some solutions:

The Airline Wants Aggressive Policy Change On U.S. Fuel Policy

Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, fuel prices shot up worldwide to 14-year highs. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the cost of flying has increased by 18.6% month-over-month, meaning that, due to fuel having essentially doubled in price in recent months, Americans are now less likely to be able to afford international, or even domestic trips.

Unsurprisingly, the rising air fares are not only a concern for customers who are eager to go on a vacation after two endless years of travel restrictions: airlines like United are also struggling to manage with the jet fuel hike. According to CCO Josh Earnest, the single most important reason behind the phenomenon is the cost of jet fuel.

Earnest noted Americans want to travel again and high travel demand is back, and he is advocating for an ‘aggressive policy’ to ease costs for passengers, who may already be facing financial difficulties themselves due to the pandemic. For him, in order to alleviate the economic impact, the United States needs to lessen its dependence on foreign oil, including Russian, immediately.

10 Billion More Is Being Spent On Fuel This Year With Flight Passengers Being Directly Affected

The former Obama White House press secretary has revealed the United States is going to pay $10 billion more in fuel this year than 2019, the year preceding the pandemic. Considering costs are then passed on to customers, either through gas stations or flight tickets, traveling has inevitably gotten more expensive for everyone, including those going on road trips or flying abroad.

To put it simply, fuel prices need to be reduced with immediate effect. As Earnest inferred, ‘one of the ways that we can do that actually is investing in sustainable fuel’, something United Airlines has pioneered. Last December, they flew the first passenger jet powered with sustainable fuel only, thus paving the way for other airlines to do the same.

Using sustainable alternatives to fossil fuels can dramatically reduce air fares, as airlines would no longer rely on the U.S. Government to strike deals with foreign states to supply the commodity, or be subject to a volatile global market, only set to get worse as the crisis intensifies. In fact, United is pushing for major changes.

It is investing in a company producing jet fuel from municipal waste, and that they have been testing since 2021. Although some passengers may be wary of flying on ‘experimental’ fuel, Earnest has emphasized it is perfectly safe and operated at the expected level. If United’s investments prove successful, this might well revolutionize the aviation sector.

Staff Shortages Still Need To Be Addressed

Higher fuel costs are not the only issue facing an already-battered aviation sector lately: staff shortages are becoming all too common, as several airlines are forced to trim down their summer program due to demand outpacing the industry’s hiring rate. Over the last few weeks, we have reported extensively on the matter ourselves.

From airlines fast forwarding security clearance for new pilots, which in turn technically makes them less experienced, to countries like the U.K. bracing for a chaotic summer ahead as there are fewer border control agents (and a higher number of arrivals), the impacts of Covid as a long-term complication are only beginning to hit.

Earnest mentions a worker shortage himself, and more specifically, a lack of pilots. This year, United has an ambitious plan to fulfill its largest-ever Transatlantic expansion, including by launching non-stop flights to five brand new destinations. Shortly after announcing it, they have been forced to suspend service on some routes.

You can probably guess why, but they have also fallen victim to a chronic, industry-wide worker shortage that will take years to mend. As Earnest puts it himself, ‘the lack of pilots is an acute problem’: people can’t just be hired ‘off the street’ to become a pilot, and years of training and preparation are required in order for an aspiring pilot to graduate.

Luckily, United is at least attempting to tackle yet this problem by training up to 500 new pilots each year. According to Earnest, this will give the airline an opportunity to ‘diversify the cockpit’ and open up career paths to people that ‘historically have not had that opportunity’. This seems to suggest United Airlines is promoting more affirmative action policies.

By reducing the impact on its workforce and finding cheaper alternatives for fuel, United Airlines is trying to keep the crisis from aggravating further by nipping it in the bud. After all, as the Business Insider affirms, the price of jet fuel is the ‘second biggest expense’ for airlines… Behind only labor. In sum, if airlines want to improve customer satisfaction, they will have to act more decisively.

Travel Demand is Back to Pre-Pandemic Levels and What it Means To You This Summer

People across the globe are eager to travel this summer, and for the first time since the start of the pandemic, global leisure and business flights have risen to levels not seen since 2019.

Airfares rose nearly 19 percent from March to April, according to recent Labor Department data, the largest month-over-month increase for plane tickets on record, and are up 33 percent from last year.

After over two years of restrictions on where to travel, people are booking new and different itineraries. The Mastercard Economics Institute’s third-annual travel report reveals several significant travel recovery trends, including:
- Today’s Traveler: For the first time since the pandemic, business flight bookings have exceeded 2019 levels, a key milestone in the recovery.
- Top destinations: Destinations are evolving as people have started booking travel farther from home. Long-haul leisure travel shot up to just -7% below pre-pandemic levels by the end of April.
- Modes of travel: Throughout 2021, traveling by car was the preferred mode of transportation but now buses, cruises, and trains are seeing an uptick in bookings.
- Consumer spending while traveling: Travelers are returning to spending on experiences over things. Travel budgets have shifted toward restaurants, bars, and recreational activities.
Travel demand is back

There is a tremendous amount of demand for travel and with that demand comes rising costs. Roughly 90 percent of U.S. travelers plan to take a trip in the next six months, and 35 percent expect to travel more this summer than last, according to data from the U.S. Travel Association.

The global travel and hospitality industry saw millions of jobs lost at the height of the pandemic as travel was nearly haltered altogether.

With large numbers of Americans taking trips for the first time since the start of the pandemic this summer, airlines, and hotels often don’t have the capacity to meet demand, driving prices even higher.

What does this mean for travelers this Summer?

People who are planning on traveling over the next few months will undoubtedly feel that demand – with long security lines, packed airports and planes, crowded attractions, and hefty price tags.

Airfare costs

Airlines predict that U.S. airports will process 3 million travelers on a single day for the first time ever this summer. Airfares skyrocketed in recent months as summer flights quickly sold out.

Record-breaking fuel costs, propelled by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine that spiked global oil prices. That is another reason why airline tickets have gone up even more.

Major airlines cut down on their spring and summer schedules to mitigate the impact of higher fuel costs and avoid a repeat of high-profile delays and cancellations that left travelers stranded last year.

So travelers will have fewer flights to choose from, fewer seats to select from, with higher price tags attached to them.

Long waits at airports

The next time you’re at the airport, expect to be waiting for quite a bit. Airlines and airport security staff are simply outnumbered by all the increased travel demand. This means long wait times at airports and gates.

People traveling this summer should do the best they can to prepare for these long lines by arriving early, having all their documents in order, and submitting Covid documentation to airlines before arriving at the airport.

How long will this all last?

Whether travel demand will remain robust throughout the year — or whether travelers will take a last summer hurrah before tightening their purse strings — is yet to be seen.

People have traditionally spent less on travel following rises in energy and food costs and with a global recession looming over our heads, many people may cut down their travel spending after the summer.

Only time will tell.
