KLM Has 167 Worldwide Routes This Summer, With 12 Direct Flights From The U.S.

The carrier will be serving a new route to Austin, Texas; and daily flights to Atlanta, Washington, New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco

The Dutch airline, KLM, announced in a press release that it will be serving 167 destinations during summer 2022, between March 27 and October 29.

The carrier will offer customers flights to 96 European cities and 71 intercontinental destinations, 12 direct flights to the United States, and a total of 16 million seats.

KLM is responding to travelers’ demands and is expanding its capacity to almost the same level it had in 2019 before the pandemic started. The new destinations added to its network —like Belgrade, Dubrovnik, and Palma de Mallorca— have been very successful routes and the company expects even more reservations to more destinations during summer.

The carrier has also made policy changes to satisfy customers’ needs. On March 23, KLM stopped requesting passengers to wear masks and joined other carriers who dropped this covid restriction. Customers flying with KLM, and taking advantage of the 167 routes the company will serve this summer, can travel with more comfort without face coverings.

KLM’s Network Expansion

Flight frequency to the Caribbean and the United States has increased. The carrier added Austin, Texas, to their network and will operate daily flights to Caribbean destinations like Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao.

The Dutch airline also mentioned that their customers are interested in Asia, for destinations like the Philippines, Thailand, Singapore, and Bali. The carrier has considered countries that have eased travel restrictions or that will soon, like India.

Other countries with strict travel restrictions, like China, are not included in their new network expansion. KLM also clarified that due to the European Union sanctions to Russia, they will not fly in Russian Airspace, and that customers must consider that flights to destinations like Japan, China, or South Korea will take two hours more and will include a stop in Seoul.

Most routes to South America have been restored to similar levels as before the pandemic. The carrier offers daily flights to Sao Paulo, Panama City, and Lima, and frequent flights to Quito, Bogotá, Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, and Santiago.

Africa is also part of KLM’s expansion, during summer the carrier will serve 10 destinations: Zanzibar, Johannesburg, Cape Town, Accra, Lagos, Kigali, Entebbe, Nairobi, Kilimanjaro, and Dar es Salaam.

KLM Flights To The US

Since November, after the United States eased travel restrictions for Europeans, KLM has reported steady growth, and their services this summer will match the ones provided in 2019.

The Dutch airline has added a new destination to the US, Austin, the state capital of Texas. They consider this destination to be “a flourishing technology hub and home to a large number of technology companies” and expect high demand for business flights in the new future.

According to the details shared on the site Aviacionline, these are the direct flights KLM has scheduled from Amsterdam to the US:
- Atlanta: daily flights.
- Austin: three times per week.
- Boston: four times per week.
- Washington Dulles: daily flights.
- Houston: six times per week.
- New York: 19 times per week.
- Las Vegas: five times per week.
- Los Angeles: 13 times per week.
- Minneapolis: four times per week.
- Chicago O’ Hare: six times per week.
- San Francisco: 10 times per week.
- Salt Lake City: three times per week.
The fleet allocated for these routes includes different models like the Airbus A330-300, Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, and the Boeing 777-200ER/787-10 Dreamliner.

KLM is currently offering customers special deals on their official website to attract more passengers. Travelers can buy tickets from New York to Amsterdam for $660, from Los Angeles to Billund for $525, from New York to Aalborg for $532, or from San Francisco to Amsterdam for $635, taxes included. Flight offers are time-sensitive and might vary depending on availability or location.

Southwest Airlines Launches New Fare Class With Various Benefits For Travelers

Southwest Airlines will add a fourth category fare to attract more business travelers and revenue this year.

The new fare will cost slightly more than Southwest Airlines’ cheapest tickets but below the airline’s top two fare categories. Southwest Airlines hopes the fare will offer more flexibility to travelers.

The airline will call the new fare category “Wanna Get Away Plus.” It will sit above the “Wanna Get Away” fares, and it will go on sale in the second quarter.

It’s Southwest’s first major fare change in 15 years.

The Details Of The New Fare Class

The “Wanna Get Away Plus” fares will allow travelers to make same-day changes to their tickets without paying the difference in fares that the lowest tier demands. Customers who select the new fare class—or classes above the fare class—will earn 33% more frequent flyer miles than the lowest tier.

Passengers can transfer flight credits to another RapidRewards member, a new feature for the airline.

Passengers also have the option to check two bags for free.

The new fare class is the latest effort by the airline to boost revenue after two years of the COVID-19 pandemic. The airline hopes it will help to bring back pre-pandemic passenger levels to Southwest Airlines.

Southwest Airlines hinted at the fresh changes before Christmas, but they didn’t give any details. The new fare class is among various moves—including a brand new credit card deal with Chase Bank—that the Texas-based airline hopes will boost revenue by over $1 billion to $1.5 billion next year.

However, executives refused to comment on how much more “Wanna Get Away Plus” seats will cost compared to their cheaper alternative. But they said it would vary by flight.

In recent years, various airlines—such as Delta, JetBlue, and United Airlines—have rolled out no-frills basic economy tickets. These tickets don’t include perks that were once free, such as advanced seat selection.

The Current State Of U.S. Airlines

Air travel demand—especially for domestic travel in the United States—and growing fuel prices from the increasing energy crisis have already pushed up fares. Unfortunately, airfares in the Department of Labor’s inflation index rose 12.7% last month from a year ago. However, the overall consumer price index rose 7.9%.

In February, bookings by both number and value on U.S. airline websites surpassed pre-pandemic levels for the first time. As a result, many of the cheap flight deals during the COVID-19 pandemic are over.

The Current Travel Rules In the U.S. Airlines

Although U.S air travel is coming back to pre-pandemic levels, airlines haven’t removed all COVID-19 restrictions. There’s still a mask mandate on all U.S. airlines until at least April 18, 2022.

However, in a letter sent to U.S. President Joe Biden on Wednesday, leaders of various major U.S. airlines demanded the government end the mask mandate along with the testing requirement for all incoming travelers to take a COVID-19 test within 24 hours of departure.

Various major airline heads signed the letter, including:
- Ed Bastian: Delta Airlines CEO
- Scott Kirby: United Airlines CEO
- Gary Kelly: Southwest Airlines executive chairman
- Robin Hayes: JetBlue Airways CEO
- Ben Minicucci: Alaska Airlines CEO
- Peter Ingram: Hawaiian Airlines CEO
- Robin Hayes: JetBlue Airways CEO
The airlines wrote: “At the outset, we voluntarily implemented policies and procedures — mandating face coverings; requiring passenger health acknowledgments and contact tracing information; and enhancing cleaning protocols – to form a multi-layered approach to mitigate risk and prioritize the wellbeing of passengers and employees,”

“However, much has changed since these measures were imposed and they no longer make sense in the current public health context.”

The airlines hope the U.S. will end the mask mandate in April and U.S. air travel will return to full normality.

The Cayman Islands Allow Cruise Ships Once Again

After two years of zero cruise ships, the Cayman Islands have allowed cruise ships to return from March 21, 2022. The island group confirmed they’ve been busy creating different procedures all cruise lines will need to follow.

The islands will begin welcoming cruise ships through a Phase 1 system, such as a maximum of 75,000 passengers on vessels and a maximum capacity of 40% per ship. If Phase 1 is successful, the islands will remove the cruise ship capacity limit.

The Cayman Islands Minister of Tourism—Honorary Kenneth Bryan—stated: “The PACT Administration does not take the decision to reintroduce cruise tourism lightly; the fact remains that while the pandemic persists, all travel, whether by air or sea, presents a certain degree of risk,”

“However, as we are seeing with stayover arrivals, our Island’s high vaccination rate, coupled with having the right safety protocols in place, is allowing our tourism industry to recover.”

South Africa Removes Testing For Vaccinated Tourists

South Africa has scrapped testing requirements for all vaccinated tourists. Prior to this announcement, all travelers—regardless of vaccination—had to take tests before arrival. However, unvaccinated arrivals still have to take a PCR test 72 hours before departure.

Children under five don’t have to follow the testing guidelines. Although entry restrictions are easing, South Africa still has some internal COVID-19 restrictions, such as mandatory masks in certain areas. Canada, The Netherlands, and the Maldives all recently removed pre-departure testing.

EasyJet Removes Masks On Many European Flights

Many airlines are now removing the use of mandatory masks on flights, such as British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, and TUI. EasyJet has joined the list and become the 7th airline to scrap mandatory masks on flights.

The new rules will apply to all UK domestic flights; they’ll also apply to flights to Iceland, Denmark, and Hungary. EasyJet said they would: “not mandate customers and crew to wear masks onboard the flight”

“Any customers or crew who wish to continue wearing a mask will of course have their personal choice respected. As a pan-European airline operating between over 30 countries, we must continue to ensure that we and our customers follow the legal requirements of all the countries we fly to,” they added.

Hawaii Stops Safe Travels Program March 25

Hawaii was one of the last U.S. states to remove COVID-19 restrictions. However, as of tomorrow, Hawaii will finally end all entry requirements for all American domestic tourists. Hawaii was the only remaining U.S. state to implement a quarantine system.

However, international travelers will have to wait for Hawaii to scrap entry requirements. Governor Ige said: “It is important to remember that we’re talking about domestic travel only, this does not apply to international travelers which have different requirements set by the federal government. It’s also equally important to note that all Safe Travels requirements must be met by incoming domestic passengers prior to March 25.”

The Netherlands Scraps Almost All Remaining COVID-19 Restrictions

After two years of relatively strict COVID-10 restrictions, The Netherlands has joined its European neighbors in scrapping most restrictions.

People who enter the Netherlands from other EU nations no longer need to provide proof of vaccination, a negative test, or proof of recovery. The nation has also removed mandatory masks on public transport.

Singapore Scraps Quarantine For All Vaccinated Tourists

Singapore has scrapped all quarantine requirements for fully vaccinated tourists today as Asia looks to ‘live with COVID-19’.

Singapore Prime Minister, Lee Hsien, said the nation’s “fight against COVID-19 has reached a major turning point,” with fully vaccinated tourists from all countries welcome to visit in April.

The nation will also lift its outdoor mask mandate, and groups of up to ten people can meet again.

India Restores 5 Year Visas For All Travelers And 10 Year Visas For U.S. Travelers

The U.S. still requires travelers to present a negative Covid-19 test result to enter – despite their neighbors Canada’s decision to remove the requirement from April 1st. Whereas once Canada had the most restrictive entry requirements of the North American countries, their recent changes will make it easier for travelers to enter – whilst those visiting the U.S. will still have several hoops to jump through.

The decision to keep the current testing requirements for travelers prior to visiting the US remains a contentious one, with both travelers and those in the travel industry alike all voicing their opposition to the policy amidst fears that it could be holding back US tourism – particularly when comparing the US to neighboring Canada and Mexico and their comparatively lighter entry requirements. Here’s a look at the US’ entry requirements, why they are proving controversial and what the future might hold for them.

Testing Requirement Remains – What Travelers Should Know

The current entry rules of the US state that all travelers above the age of 2 who arrive into the country “are required show a negative COVID-19 viral test result taken no more than 1 day before travel, or documentation of having recovered from COVID-19 in the past 90 days, before they board their flight.” This requirement is for all travelers, regardless of citizenship, nationality or vaccination status.

In contrast, Canada is set to be much easier for travelers to enter. From April 1st, the country will remove the negative test requirement for all vaccinated arrivals, making it easier and cheaper for travelers to be able to enter the country. Removing the testing requirement is a decision that several countries have made over the past few months, and the US’ reluctance to follow could harm the country’s tourism prospects.

Mexico was one of the earliest adoptees of a relaxed approach to Covid-19 entry requirements and has benefited from impressive traveler numbers as a result, with a large number of travelers both from the US and internationally flying to the country due to its ease of access and laid-back approach to the pandemic. The US could be missing out on travelers due to their current stance – an opinion that is also shared by travel businesses across the country.

On Tuesday, the US Travel Association wrote a letter to the White House in which they urged them to lift both the current Covid-19 travel restrictions and repeal the transport mask mandates. They called upon the government to take such measures by April 18th – or to release “a plan and timeline to repeal the federal mask mandate within the subsequent 90 days.”

In the letter, US Travel Chief Executive Roger Dow wrote:

“It makes little sense to keep the pre-departure testing requirement in place for inbound air travelers when the U.S. government does not require negative tests at US-Canada and US-Mexico land border points of entry.”

There is a strong argument to suggest that the US should heed the calls of the Travel Association. Cases of Covid-19 across the country remain relatively lower, whilst other governments airlines around the world have also repealed their mask mandates in response to low case and hospitalization levels. The eyes of the travel world will be on the US on April 18th – the date that the current requirement to wear masks on public transport expires – to see if that rule and any others will finally be repealed.

Fully Vaccinated U.S. Travelers Can Now Enter The Netherlands Without Testing

The Dutch government has announced that from today – 23 March – fully vaccinated travelers from the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom will be able enter the Netherlands without having to present a negative Covid-19 test upon arrival.

And, for nationals – of countries from within the EU or Schengen zone – the entry rules have been made even easier, with there now being no requirement to show proof of vaccination or recovery from Covid-19, or a need to present a negative test on arrival.

What Were The Previous Entry Requirements For U.S. and Non-EU Travelers?

Prior to this relaxing of Covid-19 entry requirements, fully vaccinated travelers – from nations that are not part of the European Union or Schengen zone – were required to present:
- a negative PCR test result (taken no more than 48 hours before departure)
- a negative antigen test result (taken no more than 24 hours before departure).
There was no need to quarantine, however, with such a requirement being lifted for American travelers on 25 February.

What Are The New Entry Requirements For Fully Vaccinated U.S. Citizens Wanting To Visit The Netherlands?

With there no longer being a requirement for travelers to take a Covid-19 test – although all travelers are ‘advised’ to self-test upon arrival, as well as on day 5 after arrival – U.S. citizens that have been fully vaccinated are able to enter the Netherlands by just:

The same rules apply to travelers from Canada and the United Kingdom.

How Do You Qualify As Being Fully Vaccinated?

In order to be considered ‘fully vaccinated’ by the Dutch authorities, you must have received your final vaccine dose no more than 270 days before your arrival into the Netherlands.

However, if you have received a booster dose your proof of vaccination is considered to be valid indefinitely.

Can Unvaccinated U.S. Travelers Currently Visit The Netherlands?

The simple answer is ‘yes’ – and the same answer applies to Canadian and British travelers.

However, an EU entry ban is currently in effect for nationals that are not from countries within the EU or Schengen zone. In order to be exempt to the ban – citizens that do not come from a country within the EU and Schengen zone need to:
- travel to the Netherlands from a ‘safe’ country
- show proof that they have been fully vaccinated against Covid-19
- show proof that they have recently recovered from Covid-19.
There are also other reasons for exemption – which can be found here.

From today – 23 March – visitors will be able to present a positive Covid-19 antigen test result as proof of recovery, with a positive PCR test result having previously been required.

Face Masks On Public Transport And Pre-Admission Testing For Large Public Events No Longer Required

Although face masks will still be required when on an airplane – and in the departure lounge of airports – the Dutch government has announced that they will no longer need to be worn when using public transport in the country. This includes when traveling by taxi, bus, and ferry.

There is also no longer a requirement to take a pre-admission Covid-19 test before visiting nightclubs – or attending a public event – with a capacity of more than 500 people.

This now means that you are no longer required to present a coronavirus entry pass in order to enter any public venue inside the country.

The Netherlands is not the first country to relax its entry requirements for travelers – with 11 nations, so far this month, having removed all of their Covid-19 entry requirements.

U.S. Airports Are Getting New High Tech Scanners That Will Speed Up Security Lines

TSA will deploy new computer tomography systems to analyze carry-on items starting this summer

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) announced last Friday that the agency recently acquired new full-size Computed Tomography (CT) x-ray systems to analyze carry-on items. The new scanners will be installed at the TSA checkpoints across airports in the United States during summer 2022.

The American government agency awarded a $781.2 million contract to Analogic Corporation—an American company that specializes in health care and security technology— for the advanced equipment and the maintenance of the new high-tech scanners. The company will deliver and deploy the powerful equipment, designed with a futuristic aesthetic, within the next few months.

“These awards are another important step in enhancing aviation security,” said TSA Administrator David Pekoske, and added: “They provide our dedicated frontline officers with one of the best tools available to screen passenger carry-on items and also improves the passenger experience by allowing passengers to keep more items in their carry-on bags during the screening process.”

According to the information shared, the new powerful CT systems will help accelerate wait times. Great news for travelers in the US, considering that covid restrictions and the new security measures implemented during the pandemic have been slowing down TSA’s process.

About the New Powerful Scanners

During this year’s summer season, travelers in the United States will be able to see the new technology at the TSA checkpoints. The advanced computer tomography system can detect weapons, explosives, and other items banned for travel.

The new scanners include sophisticated algorithms that recreate 3D images of the items recognized inside the carry-on bags. They will allow TSA officers to view, rotate and analyze the images on three axes. That way authorities can identify dangerous items. This is why passengers won’t have to take out many items from their bags.

The technology recently hired is similar to the one used to scan checked bags, in an innovative size, easier to deploy at checkpoints, and with an optimized algorithm. Full-sized CT scanners include screening lanes with divestiture stations, automated bin return, and high threat containment. The agency expects to receive 469 base and 469 full-size systems soon.

In August 2021, TSA already invested $198 million in Analogic Corporation equipment and service for 300 mid-size Checkpoint Property Screening Systems (CPSS), with the same technology to improve security in a touch-free environment. These are already being installed at U.S. airports.

U.S. citizens traveling within the next few weeks might be able to see the new modern spaceship-like scanners at TSA checkpoints.

TSA’s Recent Measures On Travel Experience

On April 18, TSA will lift the mask mandate on airports and passengers will be able to travel without face coverings. The mandate has been extended, but many remain optimistic about the new date. American Airlines even considered the same date to sell alcohol during flights again, considering that the mask mandate was one of the reasons some passengers broke the rules.

The new scanners will accelerate TSA’s regular security check process at airports. However, US citizens and permanent residents can already speed up this procedure by registering and paying for TSA Precheck, a membership that provides benefits for American travelers.

With a TSA Precheck registration travelers do not have to remove shoes, belts, or light jackets, they will get an expedited screening process, and are also allowed to leave laptops and approved liquids inside carry-on bags. Passengers registered for TSA Precheck must bear in mind that TSA recently warned travelers that unruly passengers could lose this privilege.

TSA has also recently expanded to international destinations. The agency opened a location in the Bahamas at the Lynden Pindling International Airport in Nassau. US travelers coming from the Bahamas to the US can use their TSA PreCheck membership to avoid long lines and get home faster.

The US Department of State has handed out a further 14 new travel advisory updates. The new updates, which were published yesterday on the State Department’s website, provide travelers with accurate and up to date information about the risks they might encounter when traveling to a specific location. Whilst many of the most recent updates were caused due to high levels of Covid-19 within a country, other factors may also be taken into consideration.

Issued as part of the State Departments’ attempts to keep travelers safe and informed throughout the pandemic and the uncertain times facing the world, the latest updates are the ninth individual round of updates to be published this month alone. Here’s a closer look at what the travel advisory system is, what the updates mean for travelers and which countries saw their travel advisories updates yesterday.

U.S. Travel Advisories – What Are They?

The State Department’s travel advisory warning system was designed to be a simple way to keep travelers aware of the risks faced when traveling abroad. Formerly known as Travel Warnings and Travel Alert, it has undergone several facelifts throughout the years, with the current iteration employing a color-coded and number-based system to make it even easier for travelers to understand.

Travel advisories warning levels themselves are updated as needed, based on the current security and safety information available. The different warning levels and colors are as follows:
- Level 1 warnings (blue) – this is the lowest threat level for travelers, and asks travelers to exercise normal precautions in that destination
- Level 2 warnings (yellow) – these ask travelers to exercise increased caution in that country
- Level 3 warnings (orange) – these ask travelers to reconsider travel to that destination
- Level 4 warnings (red) – these are the most severe, and explicitly warn travelers not to travel to a specific country
Latest Updates – What Travelers Should Know

At the start of the pandemic, the majority of travel advisory updates saw Level 4 warning issued to countries as the world struggled to get to grips with the spread of Covid-19. Thankfully, as time has gone on, more and more Level 2 warnings are being handed out to countries, reflecting the improvement of the Covid-19 situation around the world. Of yesterday’s 14 updates, nine of them were Level 1 and 2 whilst no Level 4 updates were awarded, which suggests the situation is improving.

The travel advisory updates are as follows:

Level 3: Albania, Bolivia, Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo and Guinea-Bissau

Level 2: Gabon, Guinea, Morocco, Mozambique, Nepal, The Gambia, Zambia

Level 1: Cabo Verde, Comoros

Being Level 1 countries, the travel advisory pages of Cabo Verde and Comoros do not show any health and safety concerns for travelers. Of those countries that have been awarded Level 2 and Level 3 advisories, Covid-19 was cited as an issue on every country’s page, other than Mozambique and the Democratic Republic of Congo. However, travelers should be aware that other risks were also cited on the updates, ranging from crime and health issues to more serious threats such as terrorism and kidnapping.

Before taking any international vacations, travelers should do their research on the destination they are visiting, and travel advisories are a vital source of information. Whilst they don’t legally prevent a traveler from taking a trip – meaning travelers are free to visit a Level 4 country if they wish – they can help a person make an informed choice about whether or not it is safe to travel. Regardless of the destination and its warning level, travelers should make sure they have a solid travel insurance policy to keep them protected when abroad.

There are 55 countries that fully vaccinated Americans can now enter without having to take a Covid-19 test.

Having originally been closed for tourism purposes, due to the global Covid-19 pandemic, and then having reopened for visitors – but with an enforced list of requirements for entry and restrictions in place – countries are continuing to relax their entry requirements.

And, there are even 11 nations that have removed all of their entry requirements in the last few weeks.

However, the purpose of this article is to take a look at the countries – throughout Latin America, the Caribbean, Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Asia – that no longer require fully vaccinated American travelers to take a Covid-19 test in order to visit.

It is important to note, however, that although the below nations no longer require visitors to undergo Covid-19 testing, they may still require you to obtain health insurance – which would cover any Covid-19 medical expenses – as well as complete certain forms before – or upon arrival.

Latin America and the Caribbean

Here are the countries in Latin America and the Caribbean that fully vaccinated Americans can now enter without having to take a Covid-19 test:

Here are the countries in Europe that fully vaccinated Americans can now enter without having to take a Covid-19 test:

As you can see from the length of the above list, the majority of nations in Europe no longer required fully vaccinated American travelers to take a pre-departure – or on arrival – Covid-19 test in order to enter.

This includes the likes of some of the most visited nations on the planet, such as France – which features the beautiful regions of Brittany and Dordogne – along with Italy, the United Kingdom and Greece, nations that certainly cater for the needs of all travelers.

And, for travelers that are looking to travel on a budget, there are certainly destinations – within the European nations listed above – that allow for this also.

Africa & the Middle East

Here are the countries in Africa and the Middle East that fully vaccinated Americans can now enter without having to take a Covid-19 test:
- Angola
- Egypt
- Jordan
- Oman
- Senegal
- Tunisia
Although the majority of countries in Africa – and the Middle East – still require travelers to undergo testing for Covid-19 in order to enter their territory, the above six nations do not.

With some ‘off the beaten path’ countries being present in the list – there are certainly some great travel options to choose from.

This includes the country of Jordan, which boasts the exotic Wadi Rum desert – a unique world heritage site that offers you the opportunity to explore its interesting historical and archeological sites.

And, if it is an authentic Arabic experience that you are looking for then Oman could be the place for you – with the nation serving up some wonderful and fascinating destinations for tourists.

However, as the short list above shows, there are in fact some nations in the region that have made entry pretty simple for American travelers – with no Covid-19 testing required.

This includes the likes of Sri Lanka – which offers a number of glorious destinations, vibrant cities, as well as the opportunity to explore its ancient monuments – and Nepal, which offers some of the very best when it comes to nature, culture and adventure.
