That’s what the experts at The Points Guy are saying, being named a top 12 European city for fall— and it’s easy to see why.

Not to mention what usually is a lively, yet brooding city, takes on a whole new vibe as it begins to glimmer with fall foliage by the time the calendar flips to October.

September, on record, is typically one of the cheapest months to travel, making the appeal of pub and castle-hopping, autumn leaf-peeping, and timeless landmarks that don’t cost a penny all the more enticing to fly ‘across the pond’.

Without further ado, it’s time to tell London to kick rocks (or “bugger off” as they might say) in favor of another timeless city on the flip side of the UK.

Great Scot! Edinburgh Is The UK’s Top Fall Destination

There are many UK cities breaking tourism records right now, and no, we’re not talking about London.

Leeds, Liverpool, Newcastle…but what about Edinburgh?

Well, there are no active reports out to suggest Scotland’s medieval marvel is seeing record-breaking numbers, but our most recent coverage of Edinburgh was backed by the claim that it was voted as the ‘Best Destination In Europe’.

Best of all, Americans can fly nonstop to avoid the chaos at one of London’s many always-packed airports.

What also separates London is the fact that they just couldn’t help themselves from modernizing their city.

Sure, Big Ben and Westminster Abbey aren’t going anywhere, but you can’t help but notice the towering high-rises either.

Edinburgh has surely taken pitches to amplify their skyline and add some extra commas to their accounts, but this 15th-century wonder is immaculately (and purposely) preserved, remaining largely unchanged to the eye.

Boasting a maze of cobbled roadways, storybook castles, scenic shores, and pubs dating back centuries — oh, and a secret island full of history nobody ever seems to talk about — why overpay in London when you can book an unforgettable trip to Edinburgh?

Where To Witness Edinburgh’s Fall Splendor

We’re just getting the ball rollin’ toward fall, but no matter if you’re planning a last-minute getaway like The Points Guy suggests or want to plan ahead deeper into fall, don’t expect solely dark Gothic hues.

Edinburgh’s tree-lined streets and lush parks begin to transform into golden browns among other hints of glowing colors.

Edinburgh still sees steady temps in the 60s in September and early October before a steep drop-off in November, where you then might have to pay for extra luggage for extra layers.

The Points Guy highlights the Royal Botanic Garden and Lauriston Castle as the best places to experience the city’s most vibrant foliage.

But…I’ve dug up another stunner — Prince Street Gardens.

Set under the staggering Edinburgh Castle, this must-visit was recently described by a visitor as ‘peaceful spot right in the middle of Edinburgh. It’s the perfect place to take a break from walking around the city, with plenty of benches, greenery, and a stunning view of Edinburgh Castle above’.

“Door Open Days”: Unpacking Edinburgh’s Free Attractions

The word “free” typically comes with some illegible fine print nobody wants to read. In this case, it’s fairly simple.

Edinburgh offers what’s known as “Door Open Days”. As such, numerous popular sites open their doors for free to the public.

Unveiling Edinburgh’s Secret Island

Yes, Edinburgh is a beach city, yet that aspect tends to be overlooked by the wondrous cityscape.

Sitting on the shores of the Firth of Forth, there are a handful of delightful beaches to visit. Though, let’s be honest —— summer is best for those given the weather in Scotland.

However, there’s an exception to the rule that many guidebooks miss too — the textbook “hidden gem” of Cramond Island.

There are a couple of features that make this little-known island truly unique:

1) It’s only accessible by walking at low tide. That’s right — no boat rides. Available times to cross the causeway can be accessed by texting “Cramond” to 81400 and looking for signs at the Crammond Village entry point.

2) Crammond Island is packed with ruins. Dating back to World War II, ruins rise from the rocky terrain, showcasing weapon emplacements, bunkers, and observation posts. It feels like a film set.

Better yet, the views are astounding. Just remember to keep your visit brief before the tides rise, leaving you stranded to act out your own war movie.

While there’s no such thing as the perfect fall getaway, I’ve always believed that something short and sweet, a trip that doesn’t take you too far away from home is as close to it as you can get.

No expensive intercontinental flights, no hours trying to figure out the currency exchange rates, no getting lost somewhere you’ve never been before – just a fun, stress-free vacation that’ll make transitioning into the colder months feel that much easier.

I know that some of you might be trying to get out of that “been there, done that” rut, but luckily for you, Book Retreats just came out with a new study that’ll provide plenty of inspiration to feed your wanderlust.

The company ranked the best places (attractions) to visit in the U.S. based on a dataset of over 7,500 visitor reviews, analyzing critical criteria like overall experience, popularity, nearby hotel costs, safety, and price complaints.

So if you want to go somewhere you know you’ll have an amazing time this season, just read through the list below and take your pick!

5. Times Square

I know, I know—Times Square seems like the most obvious touristy choice, but the truth is that places get popular for a reason.

Despite the rowdy crowds sometimes being too overwhelming to handle, this classic New York gem still manages to hold onto its all-American charm.

And even though Times Square’s never fully quiet, those lucky enough to come here during fall will find that it’s far less chaotic compared to summer or winter – so if you want to take in the bright billboards, grab a slice of New York-style pizza, and people watch in peace now’s the best time to book those tickets.

If that’s not enough to convince you, accommodation also tends to get cheaper this time of year, which is a huge plus considering the usual price levels in the area.

This hotel just a one-minute walk away from the square currently has available rooms for as little as $180 a night.

4. Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History

If you want to switch things up this season and see something truly incredible, you can’t go wrong with a trip to the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, which (bonus point!) is located right inside another one of the attractions that made it to today’s list, so you can plan a 2-in-1 situation to get the most out of your time off.

Not only will you get to see everything from dinosaur fossils to the iconic Hope Diamond, but the museum also curates special exhibits that align with the season – right now, this means themes of wildlife migration, harvest traditions, and so much more.

Before you ask, entry is completely free of charge but that also means that you’ll have to deal with some big crowds and long wait lines, so do your best to avoid peak times.

3. Balboa Park

Next, we have a nature lover’s dream (and one of my personal favorites): San Diego’s stunning Balboa Park.

You don’t even have to be big on plants to have a fantastic time here.

Between the museums, aesthetic gardens, and Spanish Colonial Revival architecture, everyone will find something to love—including the famous San Diego Zoo.

And with a 97% rate of positive reviews, you’re all but guaranteed an amazing time here.

2. National Mall

Are you intrigued by the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History we talked about before?

I have good news for you—it’s located right inside the National Mall in D.C., one of North America’s greatest cultural and historical attractions.

Here, you’ll get to experience everything from the Washington Monument to the National Gallery of Art; that is, when you’re not too busy admiring an outdoor installation, a touching memorial, or a one-of-a-kind art piece – all of which are scattered all over the place!

5. Stone Hall Castle, Canada

In the rolling hills of Saskatchewan, you’ll find Stone Hall Castle – now, while this is one of the most recently built attractions on today’s list, it’s just as impressive as its more historically rich counterparts.

That’s because the castle still boasts an authentically medieval design, complete with stone walls, towering turrets, and even a drawbridge.

4. Cabot Trail, Canada

A couple of thousands of miles east of Stone Hall Castle, you’ll find Cabot Trail, which famously stretches along the rugged coastline of Nova Scotia.

If you’re a sucker for jaw-dropping views, this is the place for you.

Featuring winding cliffs, picturesque fishing villages, and untouched nature, the sights you’ll be rewarded with for driving (or, if you’re feeling particularly adventurous, walking) through this path are gorgeous enough to rival any postcard.

3. Al Noor Island, UAE

It’s time to explore someplace a bit further away from home, and Al Noor Islan is the perfect destination to do just that.

One of the great things about being a frequent traveler is getting to see some of the world’s best attractions first-hand.

Ancient Roman baths in Britain, the mythical temple of Angkor Wat in Cambodia, and St Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican – these international sights attract American visitors in their droves.

But what about the best attractions on our own doorstep in North America? Which are the ones worth your time and effort to see?

A new report by vacation rental company Casago has some answers.

6) Cerro Negro Volcano, Nicaragua

Situated about 15 miles from the city of Leon, Nicaragua’s Cerro Negro Volcano is a sight to behold.

Standing at 2,388ft, this imperious volcano stands out against the horizon thanks to its jet-black slopes made from the ash and volcanic rock of previous eruptions.

Not only is this a great attraction for lovers of great scenery and amateur volcanologists, it’s also ideal for thrill-seekers – you can hire sleds and sandboards to whizz down the sandy slopes.

Need another reason to visit? Nicaragua is by far one of the cheapest countries in the region, with average spending for travelers estimated at about $55 per day.

5) Central Park, New York

The 840-acre strip of green that punctuates Manhattan is quite possibly the most famous park on the planet.

I am, of course, referring to Central Park in New York City, the only attraction in the United States to make this top 6.

As well as being a great spot for walking, running, or grabbing a relaxing picnic, Central Park is home to a world-famous zoo, a carousel, and a boathouse where you can rent boats to traverse the lake.

One of the best things about Central Park is the views it affords you of some of New York’s most iconic buildings.

4) Museo Nacional de Antropologia, Mexico

Located just over a mile west of the Angel of Independence statue in ever-popular Mexico City, the Museo Nacional de Antropologia is the national museum of Mexico and well worth adding to your itinerary when visiting.

Over more than 800,000 square feet of exhibition space, the museum showcases some of the most interesting cultural and archeological artifacts in all of Mexico.

The entry fee is 95 Mexican Pesos (about $5), and right now, the museum is showcasing limited-time exhibitions on the themes of apocalypse and Chac Mool by Sebastian.

3) Old Quebec, Canada

This UNESCO World Heritage site is a remarkably well-preserved fortified town featuring intricate colonial architecture that dates back over 400 years.

They call this region of the city ‘the birthplace of French North America’, and it’s easy to see why when you sample some of the delightful cafes, bakeries, and independent shops on Petit-Champlain Street.

Old Quebec is close to a picturesque port, which is a beautiful spot to watch either sunrise or sunset paint golden light over the beautiful buildings behind.

This unique attraction must surely play a part in why Canada is always one of the most visited destinations for Americans.

2) Horseshoe Falls, Canada

For those who aren’t familiar, Horseshoe Falls is one of the main waterfalls that make up Niagara Falls.

Horseshoe is on the Canadian side of this iconic destination and attracts more than 8 million visitors annually.

It might seem like a cliched and maybe even overrated destination, but it scored the second-highest average score in this study among American travelers.

Despite the slightly gaudy nature of the nearby town, the falls themselves are something everyone should see at least once.

1) Tikal, Guatemala

It may surprise you to learn that the top-rated attraction in North America by American travelers lies in the underrated nation of Guatemala.

But once you lay eyes on the magnificent temples and ruins of Tikal National Park in the far northeast of the country, you may begin to understand.

The temples here jut up above dense rainforest and offer perhaps some of the best examples to witness what ancient Maya culture was like.

It’s also relatively easy to access – there’s a small airport in the city of Flores on the shores of Lake Peten Itza that is only about an hour’s drive from Tikal.

The winner of TripAdvisor’s top spot for best attraction in the U.S. for the second year in a row is the iconic Empire State Building, which placed 5th among the best attractions in the world. After recently undergoing a full-scale rehab to the tune of $165 million, the Empire State Building now has an immersive museum and totally revamped 102nd Floor Observatory with breaking 360-degree views reaching 80 miles and spanning over five states.

Of course, this award-winning attraction gets busy quickly, with over 4 million visitors a year, and tickets should be purchased online ahead of time. The good news is there is no time limit when you visit.

To avoid crowds, you can go right at opening or near closing or consider booking a sunrise ticket for one of the best you will ever see.

With over 800 acres to explore, New York City’s famous Central Park is clearly a huge draw for tourists and locals alike. Over 150 years old, open every day, and with free entry (it’s a park after all), there really is no reason not to include a wander around Central Park on your visit to New York City.

5. The National WWII Museum, Louisiana

Featuring immersive and educational exhibits, New Orleans’s best tourist attraction is one not to miss. The luggage company Stasher has recently published a ranking of the 99 tourist attractions across the globe to determine which attractions are truly worth visiting.

For the analysis, experts at Stasher considered different location data, recent Google reviews, TikTok popularity, and distance from the nearest international airport.

Travelers’ least disappointing attractions are primarily in Europe, and two of the worst are in the United States.

5. Kilmainham Gaol, Dublin

As we continue to deal with rising inflation and a high cost of living, tourists are aware that every penny counts when planning a vacation. With budget-conscious travel more important than ever, travelers are looking for destinations that offer good value within their price range. That is why travel booking company Omio did the research to uncover the best budget-friendly European cities.

The study categorized 12 different metrics to determine the costs of activities, food, and drink, and infrastructure in 100 popular travel destinations in Europe. Cities in Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland, and Spain were all included in the study.

While their research didn’t take into consideration the cost of accommodation, which can often be the most expensive part of a vacation, it did expose a number of interesting metrics for tourists to take note of if they are trying to figure out the most economical way to visit.

Looking for a cheap beer? Head to Sevilla, Spain where the average cost of a pint is $2.25. Or did you know that Madrid has 1,857 public drinking fountains making it easy to cut down on the cost of bottled water? Spain has at least 5 cities where a 24-hour public transportation ticket is less than $2, and tourists can take a city bus tour of Edinburgh for just over $11.

One of the most popular tourist activities is visiting museums and attractions in one’s destination city. Admission prices to these sites can add up quickly, especially if traveling in a group or if your plans include checking out multiple museums during your vacation.

The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam costs $20.65 per person for admission, and access to the Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel is $17.55. Popular tourist attractions can be even more expensive. Tickets to the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin start at $27, and admission to Italy’s Leaning Tower of Pisa starts at $20 per person.

So which European cities offer the most options for free museums and attractions? According to Omio’s study, there are 3 cities that have more than 400 free attractions and museums each, and they all happen to be located in the countries that Americans want to visit the most. The 3 cities with the highest number of free museums and attractions are Rome, London, and Paris. This ranking was determined by combining Omio’s count of free museums and free sightseeing attractions.

Rome

With a whopping 553 free sightseeing attractions and 34 free museums, Rome tops the list. If you are on the hunt for a culture-filled vacation that can be done on a budget, Rome is a great option.

Consider Visiting: Rome’s Pantheon, one of the city’s most popular tourist stops, dates way back to 25 BC. Cat lovers will enjoy visiting the Torre Argentina Cat Sanctuary to watch cats roam about ancient ruins, including the square where Caesar was assassinated.

London

London is a great destination for museum fanatics who don’t want to break the bank with the cost of admission. The city has 95 free museums and 487 free sightseeing attractions.

Consider Visiting: The Tate Modern, a must-see for art lovers with an impressive collection of British works from 1500 – the present. For nature lovers, Holland Park is home to a beautiful Japanese Garden to bring a little tranquillity to your vacation.

Paris

Some of Paris’ top tourist spots do charge admission, but you’ll still find 27 free museums and 394 free sightseeing attractions in the beloved City Of Lights.

The study did not take into account the price of accommodations, which can be expensive in all these locations, but given the size of each city, there are lots of options and plenty of ways to save on hotels. Rome, London, and Paris all have good public transportation.

Look for hotels outside of the city center along public transportation lines for easy access to the city. You’ll often find much cheaper rates if you are willing to stay outside of the hustle and bustle. Another way to save is to be flexible with dates. Hotel prices fluctuate throughout the year, so traveling during the shoulder or off-seasons can save a significant amount of money and result in a vacation with fewer crowds.
