According to CN Traveler readers who participated in their yearly survey, the best city for visiting in the U.S. is Chicago, Illinois.

Though it is a city best known for boasting great connectivity to other global destinations through its busy O’Hare International Airport, which officially serves as an intermediate stop for many Americans going abroad, Chicago is so much more than a mere transit hub.

Topping the CN Traveler list ‘yet again‘, it is the third-largest city in the States, home to beautiful architecture, an inspiring underground music scene, and most importantly, an amazing local cuisine.

Incredible Cuisine

Not that many American cities are renowned for their local food.

The U.S. may be a colossal state, but as it is a nation built by and for migrants, food is either heavily influenced by third cultures or directly imported from other countries, lacking the traditional aspect of it.

Chicago is no exception, as it does not have a wealth of native ingredients and dishes itself, but on the other hand, it is known for its creative take on world cuisine and numerous delicacies.

These include the Chicago-style hot dog, the Italian-inspired beef sandwich, and Chicago Barbecue.

The most iconic of them, deep-dish pizza, is baked around a steel pan, resembling an upside-down pie filled with mozzarella cheese.

Spain is one of the most popular destinations in Europe for travelers and one of the best countries to visit during the winter, thanks to its overall warmer climate, especially in southern Spain.

Seville is the capital of Southern Spain and the fourth-largest city in the country. It’s known for its stunning architecture, historic charm, and famed traditions like flamenco and bullfighting.

Seville, known as Sevilla in Spanish, is located in the Andalusia region of southern Spain. This means it enjoys lots of sunshine and warm weather, even during the winter.

Even in the coldest months of December and January, the average high in Seville is 62° F. It also very rarely rains in Seville, making it the perfect winter sun destination when much of the rest of Europe is experiencing freezing temperatures and snow.

The mild winter weather in Seville is also a reprieve from scorching summer temperatures, which regularly soar above 100° F.

2. Less Crowded In Winter

Despite the fact that Seville is scorching hot during the summer, it still receives lots of tourists during the summer months, as well as during the “shoulder seasons” of late spring and early fall.

However, you’ll enjoy far fewer crowds in Seville during the winter months. That’s not to say there’s nothing going on, though — far from it. You’ll just be able to enjoy the popular attractions of Seville, like the Royal Alcázar and the Catedral de Sevilla, or stroll through the Plaza de España, or sit at an outdoor cafe without the huge crowds.

3. Affordable Destination

Another reason to visit Seville in the winter? It’s affordable! Since winter is the off-season in Seville, you can find much better deals on hotels than you would be able to find during the high season.

In general, Seville is also one of the more affordable destinations in Spain, especially when compared with other popular tourist destinations like Barcelona and Madrid.

And when compared to the rest of Europe, Spain is already a bargain contrasted with pricy nearby countries like France or the United Kingdom. This means your money will stretch a lot further in Seville than you might be expecting!

4. Great For Solo Travelers

Another reason to visit Seville is because it’s a great destination for solo travelers. It’s known for being a very safe city, and Spain’s late-night culture (many people eat dinner around 10 or 11 p.m.!) means that there are people out and about late into the evenings.

It’s also a good destination for meeting both other travelers and locals alike, and the city (and its surroundings) are a breeze to get around, making it easy to explore.

5. Lots Of Day Trip Potential

Finally, one of the best reasons to visit Seville is because of the many incredible day trip opportunities nearby! You could easily base yourself in Seville for a week, spend half that time exploring the city, and spend the other half of your time taking day trips around Andalusia.

Córdoba is one of the best day trips from Seville. It’s just 50 minutes away by train. This historic city dates back to Roman times, and it was a major Islamic center during the Middle Ages. The Muslim influence can be seen in La Mezquita, a medieval mosque that was later converted into a cathedral.

Another great day trip is Jerez de la Frontera. This is another stunning Andalusian city that’s one hour from Seville by train. And just an additional 40 minutes from Jerez de la Frontera, you’ll find Cadiz, a historic coastal city.

Why This Coastal Nordic City Is My Favorite For Solo Travel

“The forest answers in the same way one shouts at it.”

Scouring the globe for a decade in search of a destination I could feel at complete ease as a solo female traveler; why had it taken me 30 years to touch down in this alluring Nordic city?

Arguably one of the best seasons, fall showcases the vibrant colors of the leaves as they blend effortlessly against the flamboyant buildings lining the streets: truly picture-perfect.

Maybe it was the friendly smiles of the locals or maybe the respect I felt as a woman, but I can safely say that 35 countries later, Helsinki may be the place I felt the most comfortable as a solo female traveler thus far on my jaunts across the world.

Seasonal Mix-Up

Crisp air greeted me as I made my way from Helsinki Central Station through the main part of the city. I arrived just in time for the beginning of the fall season. What’s pleasant about Sweden is the mixture of weather and the ability to experience all four seasons in one place.

While the winter months are certainly a huge draw for visitors looking to experience the beauty of Sweden layered in a powdered sheet of white, the fall brings a pop of color to the city and a noticeable buzz around certain events and things to do.

Unexpected Places To Meet People

Navigating a new destination can be arduous as a solo traveler, but you know what makes it a little easier? Finding something in common with the locals. And if there’s one thing most Finns are passionate about, it’s the city’s spirited beer scene.

Embarking on a mission from my hostel to the eclectic street that is Iso Roobertinkatu, I had one destination in mind: Black Door Beer Garden. I was on the hunt for a local haunt where I could chat with others who shared my beer-loving tendencies and for a chance to really talk to the locals.

To say I found it here is an understatement. After a week in Helsinki, I found myself back at the neighborhood bar 3-4 more times during my stay. There’s nothing more pleasurable as a solo traveler than being greeted as an old friend in a new city.

5 Star Hostel Life

Upon check-in, I was asked to take off my shoes and handed a pair of slippers. Staying in hostels around the world, you learn to appreciate the small luxuries – and this was certainly one of them!

Situated in a commercial building on the buzzing street of Kalevankatu, Yard Hostel was the ideal place to stay as a solo traveler. With a cozy atmosphere and family feel, it’s within walking distance to everything you’d want to see around the city, with a few local bars on your doorstep.

The Yard perfectly mirrors the Finnish way of life through its clean interiors, potted plants, and open spaces. A large common area and kitchen make it surprisingly easy to meet fellow travelers during the stay, and rooms are spacious with curtains for privacy.

Imagine waking up on a crisp, cool morning, and all you want to do is relax, detox, and enjoy the Finnish way of life. Well, Helsinki has an abundance of activities for all locals and travelers.

With an estimated 3.3 million saunas across the country, the art of detoxing truly is a way of life in the Finnish culture, and luckily for visitors, they’re easily accessible.

Oftentimes, Nordic countries are known for being a little more expensive than the likes of Eastern Europe or Western Europe; however, affordable finds can be found all over the world if you know where to look for them.

As a solo traveler, I always base my trips on one key mindset: do as the locals do. To fully immerse oneself into the open arms of a new culture, it’s important to explore off the beaten path slightly and see where the road leads.

Meandering along the foliage-lined streets of Helsinki without Google Maps as my guiding light, I stumbled upon many local markets, thrift shops, quaint cafes, and outlying neighborhoods

- Market Square: Sat along the waterfront in the city center, the Square is lined with tents serving all of Finland’s traditional favorites (be sure to try the salmon soup and vendace)
- Hakaniemi Market Hall: An indoor/outdoor market in the quirky Kalio neighborhood of Helsinki. As one of the city’s most authentic markets, it offers 2 floors of the best finds
- Old Market Hall: Serving Helsinki since 1889, you’ll find some of the best foods here
- Hietalahden Kauppahalli: Vintage indoor food hall
- Cafe Regatta: This log-cabin cafe has called Taivallahti Bay home for more than 135 years! A local haunt, it has some of the best views and cinnamon buns outside of the city
- Keskuspuisto: Did you know the central forest in Helsinki is a foraging site? Actually, most of the country is! Finland believes in Jokaisenoikeudet or everyman’s rights. “The law allows anyone living in or visiting Finland the freedom to roam the countryside,” which could be the cheapest meal ever if you can cook it all afterward!

This huge cultural city is a draw for many reasons. Even digital nomads love calling Istanbul their temporary home.

What makes Istanbul especially great in the fall is all the same sights remain with far fewer tourists. The breathtaking mosques are still open to visit, the cheap boat tours are still enjoyable, and so on.

When we think of snow, Turkey most likely isn’t one of the countries that comes to mind. However, it does indeed snow here, including Istanbul.

While some travelers love to see the snow in winter, Istanbul may not be worth the long-haul flight just for snow.

Fall is the last chance for the year to truly enjoy all the sights and wonders of this gorgeous city. Of course, you can always find things to do in a city this size no matter the weather.

Yet, fall is simply more enjoyable here. The temperature stays mild through November and the only time you may need to check the weather is for occasional rain or the windchill if you plan to take a boat tour.

Plus, if you come in fall you can see the already beautiful city light up even more with the rustic colors of fall foliage.

You can’t see that in summer or winter!

Very Affordable Costs

Sometimes, travel costs can spike during peak season. Some would say that is the case in Istanbul. One major benefit of booking your trip in the fall season is you can easily save money by doing so.

Istanbul welcomes every type of traveler, and everyone can stay here at reasonable prices. Of course, any time you choose to stay at a luxury hotel, those are going to be on the pricier side.

Istanbul has many of the name-brand hotels Westerners are familiar within 3, 4, and 5-star classes. What travelers will also find is affordable boutique hotels spread out across the city, including some with awesome views of the sea.

If you’re a solo traveler, no need to worry. Istanbul has you covered there too with plentiful hostels in some of the most sought-after locations.

Surprising Nature

Did you know Istanbul has beautiful forests? Summer travelers are typically focused on staying busy and finding awesome beaches.

However, Istanbul is more than just an amazing coastal city. Sure, the water is beautiful, especially with the backdrop of Istanbul’s jaw-dropping architecture.

Fall brings out the best of Istanbul’s forests surrounding the urban jungle. Google “Istanbul,” and you may be surprised by how much green you see on the map.

That is mostly forests surrounding the city, which permeates with fall colors until winter hits. Many Belgrad Forest is the best to visit, but there are others to consider as well, such as Fatih Forest.

Travelers may typically come to Istanbul for the buzzing nightlife, gorgeous architecture and amazing food and coffee, which can still all be enjoyed this time of year.

Fall unleashes another side to the amazing city’s personality and you will not be disappointed making Istanbul your next travel splurge.
