A new industry report has revealed the most underrated European travel destinations of 2023. According to a survey conducted by World Travel Market, these are the top destinations that travel industry professionals view as flying under the radar.

You won’t find popular European destinations like France or Italy on this list. These underrated destinations offer jaw-dropping scenery, history and culture, delicious food, and more – without the massive crowds, and often at lower prices too.

1. Azores

The Azores, an island chain in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean that belongs to Portugal, tops the list of underrated destinations for 2023.

Although the Azores has been growing in popularity in recent years, it remains an off-path destination due to its remote location. However, visitors who make the trek to the Azores will be rewarded with stunning views and unspoiled natural beauty.

2. Northern Greece

While Greece is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe, most visitors stick to Athens and the Cycladic islands, including Santorini, Mykonos, Naxos, and Paros.

However, there’s so much more to Greece than these popular spots.

Northern Greece (which really includes everything north of Athens!) is full of underrated gems.

They have been routinely barred from traveling to overly conservative destinations, including some of their favorite European and Asian countries, as national governments intensified their fight against the virus.

Often overlooked compared to other Asian countries, Bhutan is a landlocked Buddhist kingdom in the Eastern Himalayas, sandwiched between the much larger China and India. Known for its mountainous territory, the mystical ‘Land of the Thunder Dragon’ is home to scenic hiking trails and remote, cliff-top monasteries.

Vacation rentals are still reaping the benefits of their success from pandemic travel, with the demand for short-term rentals on the rise, despite the looming colder temperatures. According to data from HomeToGo, a marketplace for vacation rentals, it has seen a 28% annual increase in rental searches by U.S. travelers for fall vacations.

The vacation rental company also conducted a survey and found more than one-third of their U.S. respondents are planning overnight travel during Thanksgiving and are gravitating towards peaceful coastal towns, mountain villages, and laid-back cultural gems.

“Instead of having a family feast in their homes, many are opting to celebrate in the comforts of a getaway in a vacation rental,” said Caroline Burns, travel expert and Director of PR at HomeToGo, in an email to Travel Off Path.

HomeToGo crunched its data of thousands of vacation rentals and discovered that the below five U.S. destinations have more than doubled in searches for the Thanksgiving period. Conveniently, they all fall under $250 a night on the website and still have plenty of availability.

Killington, Vermont

Situated in the Green Mountains in central Vermont, this ski town has the largest ski and snowboard resort in eastern North America. The snow season officially kicks off as early as November 11, and you won’t be disappointed by the slopes, which have some of the best views of the Northeast.

Spend a day skiing the historic Pico Mountain and follow it with some live music at the Wobbly Barn. This adventure capital also offers stunning hikes along the Appalachian Trail and converts into a mountain biking wonderland when the season changes. The average price per night is $239.

Carolina Beach, North Carolina

According to figures released by Sedetur, Mexico’s equivalent to a Tourism Board earlier in the year, Isla Mujeres was already one of the best performing in the Mexican Caribbean during the first yearly quarter, way before the last surviving Covid mandates in Mexico fell – at times, it even surpassed the mighty Cancun.

In the first three months of the present year, which comprised the last high season for Mexican tourism, Isla Mujeres had an occupancy rate of 71.2%, higher even than the Cancun-Puerto Morelos duo at 70.73%. It still couldn’t beat Cozumel (71.77%), but it got pretty close to snatching the crown as the Riviera Maya’s fastest recovering municipality in early 2022.

Trend Continued Well Into The Summer Months

This trend was repeated over summer, when the insular gem experienced a ‘boom’ in bookings, with an average 180,000-200,000 tourists monthly. According to José Castillo Magaña, the island has succeeded in having ‘record occupations’ that even exceed the pre-pandemic levels. On certain occasions, occupancy was as high as 85 percent.

Of course, in terms of guests, Cancun remains a force to be reckoned with, being currently projected to be used as an entry point into Mexico by as much as 25 million tourists by year’s end. Although many will land in, and fulfill their vacations in Cancun, others will have onward tickets to other spots along or off the coast, including Isla Mujeres.

In early June, there were already up to 12,000 hotel rooms available, and an approximate 3,000 more would be added ‘until the end of 2022’, proving demand remains at an all-time high. As Magaña sees it, Isla Mujeres is positioning itself as a consolidated tourist hub, both due to the quality of services provided and ‘warmth’ of the islanders.

With multiple ferries departing daily from the continent, it is both a highly sought-after day trip, due to the exclusivity it provides being an island, as well as a resourceful final destination.

Located only 13 km from the Cancun coast, Isla Mujeres is home to incredibly pristine beaches, including Playa Norte, repeatedly ranked among the most beautiful in the world, and that’s been recently named ‘the best beach‘ in all of Mexico. It beats other regional contenders, like Playa Delfines in Cancun and Playa Paradiso in Tulum.

It has also been recently voted the second best island destination in North America by the renowned travel magazine Condé Nast Traveler. Besides, it is part of the reason why the Mexican Caribbean’s has had surprising September numbers, a period when tourism usually slows down following the end of the school holidays.

We cannot predict whether this growing popularity will extend into the upcoming high season, namely the months of December through April, especially now that the looming recession and cost of living crisis is making it harder for the average American to go abroad and splurge on a Mexican all-inclusive, but one thing’s for certain:

Mexico has three of the top five islands in North America, according to a poll conducted by the renowned travel magazine Condé Nast Traveler. Every year, their editors compile the world’s favorite destinations based on their readers’ preferences, and this time, those surveyed sent a clear message that the Riviera Maya remains highly sought-after for beach breaks.

Throughout the pandemic, while most of the world shut down for tourism, the Mexican Caribbean remained open and continue to welcome foreigners, irrespective of their immunization status and with very few entry requirements. As a result, Mexico easily outpaced other global competitors and is on track to claim the unofficial title of King of Tourism.

It may have taken a health crisis for the more skeptical tourist to turn their eyes to Mexico, but now that they have seen firsthand all the wonders it hides, they don’t want to go anywhere else:

Mexico Is Officially America’s Favorite Sunny Destination

The Mexican Caribbean is easily Mexico’s best-selling product when it comes to international tourism. Home to an internationalized Cancun and featuring an extensive list of traditional fishing villages and historical sites of invaluable importance, it has arguably become the top-rated sunny destination in North America.

This winter alone, the state of Quintana Roo is projected to host nine million visitors, easily surpassing an already record-breaking 2019, and this fast-paced recovery has shown no signs of slowing down. Naturally, part of the Riviera’s irresistible appeal lies in a triad of islands that have been recently recognized for their enviable advances on the tourism front.

According to Condé Nast Traveler (CN Traveler), a respected source that has been tracking travel trends for more than three decades, three of North America’s top five island destinations are now claimed by the Mexican Caribbean. For the 35th edition of their Readers’ Choice Awards, the publication heard 240,000 readers, and the masses have spoken:

Isla Holbox is 2022’s trendiest North American island.

Isla Holbox Is The Number One Island Destination

Isla Holbox, situated north of the Yucatán Peninsula in the Quintana Roo state, is officially the region’s best-loved island. Isla Holbox is famous for its wildlife, which includes elegant pink flamingos wandering turquoise water beaches. Moreover, it is car-free, making it much more quaint than the continental Quintana Roo.

Overall, it has a score of 88.96 on CN Traveler’s ranking, placing it at number one. It was almost a tie between Isla Holbox and the second-best placed, the beautiful Isla Mujeres, but the former still came out ahead with slightly more points. Interestingly, these two islands do not have a commercial airport.

While Cancun, Tulum, and the like have direct international links to cities across the United States and Canada, most visitors attempting to reach Isla Holbox do so by ferry, even though there is a small aerodrome hosting air taxis and other private jets. Similarly, the gateway into Isla Mujeres, located only 13 kilometers off the Cancun coast, is also Cancun Airport.

These islands’ relative exclusivity, at least when it comes to the incredibly well-connected Cozumel, proves North American travelers are favoring destinations that offer more peace and quiet and are not as overrun by tourists as the coast. Regarding its score, Isla Mujeres ranks in the runner-up slot with an enviable 88.01 points – marginally fewer than Holbox.

Cozumel Rounds Out The Top Five

When it comes to the aforementioned Cozumel, the Riviera Maya’s most popular island based on arrival figures alone, it charts at a lower number five, scoring 80.22 points. Rounding out the ranking, the island is served by an international airport, unlike Holbox and Isla Mujeres, and is much more densely populated, with over 100,000 inhabitants.

4. Vancouver Island, Canada
5. Cozumel, Mexico
Additionally, readers elected Cape Breton and Vancouver Island as the third and fourth-best islands in North America, respectively. These Canadian gems are the only ones in the list that have not been attributed to winter breaks or beach holidays: Cape Breton has a rugged coastline and dramatic scenery, while Vancouver Island is a well-known metropolitan hub.

Acknowledging long-term solo travel as one of 2022’s leading trends, the famous home rental and booking platform AirBnB has unveiled the top 5 most affordable digital nomad destinations in the U.S. this year. Understandably, major cities like New York, Los Angeles and the luxurious Vegas did not make the cut.

The United States is not exactly known for being a digital nomad hub, mostly due to its strict visa rules, which keep most long term travelers out, as well as high cost of living compared to other budget destinations like Colombia or Brazil. For that reason, getting good value for money can be a challenge, especially in big urban centers and tourist hotspots.

That does not mean nomads living on a stricter budget can’t base themselves in the U.S. – they just need to know where to look:

The U.S.’s Most Affordable Long-Term Rentals Are…

In defining the top five most affordable nomad destinations in the U.S., AirBnB took into account the average nightly price for popular destinations only, where more than 1,000 long-term stays were recorded in the first yearly quarter. While ‘long-term stay’ is not a fixed period, it generally refers to trips longer than a couple of weeks, or even those exceeding one month.

With that in mind, the States’ best cities to live as a budget nomad are the following:

5. Angleton, Texas

Angleton is Texas’ incredibly budget-friendly destination within the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land metropolitan zone. A small city of less than 20,000 inhabitants, it has AirBnBs priced at a moderate $24,5 per night, far lower than Houston’s stratospheric $151, and a much more relaxed vibe than its neighboring metropolis.

In the municipality, nomads have a total of nine public parks to go on nature walks, besides being able to attend Brazoria County Fair, Texas’ largest, when booking stays throughout October. Despite being off the main route, it is not at all hard to get to: Angleton is only 43 miles south of downtown Houston and 18 miles north of Freeport, on the coast.

That way, young travelers can easily hit H-Town for a night out while still enjoying all the perks of residing in a quaint, traditionally Texan location.

4. Lamberton, Minnesota

A short two hour drive southeast of Minneapolis, Lamberton is a town in Minnesota home to roughly 800 inhabitants, nestled deep in the historical Redwood County. The area is famous for its abundance of nature, waterfalls, rivers and nature trails, something travelers are actively looking for after being confined to their homes for two years.

Basing themselves in Lamberton while exploring the beautiful surroundings, guests can expect to pay $24,4 per night, only a cent cheaper than Angleton, Texas. On the downside, Lamberton is much farther away from a big city than its Texan counterpart, although its remoteness is exactly what makes it appealing for nature enthusiasts.

As for cultural activities, popular attractions include the Corn Carnival Day and other rural events.

3. Garretson, South Dakota

Yet another small city, Garretson has a population of 1,228 according to the 2020 census and owes its fame to the picturesque Split Rock Park, one of Minnehaha County’s most visited. In fact, it is only 23 miles northwest of Sioux Falls, the largest urban center in the state, making it a popular weekend getaway for locals.

When choosing to stay in Garretson as opposed to downtown Sioux Falls, nomads will not only get a much easier access to the town’s untouched nature, but also AirBnB fares that are about 82.3% lower. Instead of a crippling $130 nightly, budget nomads can find cozy rooms here for only $170,1 per week, or $24,3 per night.

If you’re a History lover, you might be interested to know Garretson is associated with the legendary outlaw Jesse James, being the site where he escaped a posse after robbing the First National Bank in Northfield.

2. Catlett, Virgina

You might have started to notice a running theme here. Once again, a small town features on this list, assuming the runner-up slot as the second most affordable AirBnB destination for long-term travelers: Catlett, a historical town an hour’s drive from Washington D.C., and one of the hidden gems in the state of Virginia.

Catlett houses a Historic District packed with late 19th and early 20th century landmarks, including a Gothic revival church built in the year 1872. Regarding accommodation, it is no wonder it is so popular among remote workers: it costs only $21.8 per night, or an average $610 a month, to live here as a nomad.

The town is particularly favored by those seeking culture, having been added to the National Register of Historical Places in 2008 due to its key role in the American Civil War.

1. Tulalip, Washington

The definitive winner, Tulalip (or Tulalip Bay) is an autonomous region of the State of Washington under the jurisdiction of the native Tulalip Tribes. Providing visitors with another nature escape, it boasts a myriad of forest reserves and lakes, as well as being in close proximity to the landmark Hat Island.

The average price per night in Tulalip is a record-low $16.9 per night, making it the cheapest long-term rental offer on AirBnB in the United States by a large margin. In nearby Seattle, the average monthly fare would be a staggering $4,590, or 89% more expensive to book. Interestingly, Seattle remains one of AirBnB’s most popular nomad destinations, in spite of the soaring prices.

Thailand’s Maya Bay – made famous thanks to Leonardo DiCaprio’s Hollywood smash The Beach – is closed at present to allow ecosystems at the scenic cove a chance to recover. The bay had only just reopened this year after more than three years of being closed to the public following significant degradation to the local environment, with fierce debate currently brewing between local groups about whether or not the closure of one of the country’s leading tourism attractions should be made permanent or seasonal.

However, regardless of whether the bay is set to reopen or close for good, there’s no reason for travelers to fear as Thailand has plenty more beautiful beaches, cozy coves and idyllic islands to enjoy. Here’s a look at five of the most beautiful alternatives to Maya Bay, and why travelers looking to visit the Land of Smiles over the next few months should add them to their travel itineraries as soon as possible.

Railay

For travelers looking for an alternative to Maya Bay, where better arguably the country’s most beautiful beach located in the same province? Situated in coastal Krabi between the main town and Ao Nang, Railay is a remarkable peninsula surrounded by sheer limestone cliffs that provide some of the world’s best rock climbing routes. Home to four distinct beaches, along with a network of caves, tiny islands within swimming distance and mangroves that are rich in biodiversity, Railay provides stunning island views that are best enjoyed from its soft beaches, temperate seas or under the shadow of its looming karsts. Less developed than Koh Phi Phi but with a healthy supply of cafes and eateries, Railay is the perfect place to spend a day or two, and is easily accessible from Ao Nang via a 10-minute longtail boat ride.

Ko Similan

Also located on the country’s Andaman coast, Ko Similan – better known as the Similan Islands – are a Mecca for diving enthusiasts, but there’s more than just life beneath the waves to enjoy. Reachable via a boat journey from Phang Nga’s resort town of Khao Lak, the Similan Islands are everything a tropical island paradise should be. The water is remarkably clear, the sand is soft and powdery whilst a wide array of wildlife can be observed – from stunning monitor lizards on the islands themselves to manta rays, sharks and sea turtles around them. Whilst diving will give travelers the full Similan Island experience, most tours also provide snorkeling equipment, which provides a window into the underwater world that helped put this destination on the map.

James Bond Island

Maya Bay isn’t the only destination in Thailand to have welcomed Hollywood to its shores. Khao Phing Kan served as a villain’s hideout in the 1974 James Bond movie The Man with the Golden Gun, and has been referred to as James Bond Island by travelers ever since. Also located in Phang-Nga province in the country’s south, the island is instantly recognizable due to its singular limestone column erupting from the sea in a perpendicular fashion and gorgeous, isolated beaches and islands nearby. The location is mostly underdeveloped, with the entire province of Phang-Nga providing much more local vibes than its tourism-heavy neighbors Phuket and Krabi, providing an authentic slice of life in rural Thailand. Tour tickets to the island often also include a trip to Koh Panyi, a well-known fishing village on stilts famed for its floating soccer pitch.

Freedom Beach

Phuket is full of beaches, but few share the quiet, effortlessly beautiful qualities that bring travelers to Maya Bay in their droves. Freedom Beach, however, is one of the few exceptions. Despite being geographically close to the rowdy beaches of Patong, Freedom Beach couldn’t be more different. Accessible courtesy of a longtail boat or a perilous descent down a treacherous dirt track, Freedom Beach boasts powdery, white sand, turquoise seas and an abundance of coves, bays and inlets to explore nearby. Tropical coconut trees and palms provide shade and a typical beach atmosphere, and the night-time delights, restaurants and sights of Patong are just around the corner once you’ve had enough of this paradise.

Koh Hong

Another glorious location in Krabi Province, Koh Hong is arguably the most aesthetically-similar destination to Maya Bay in the country. Like Maya Bay, Koh Hong features beaches surrounded by sheer cliffs, with views out into the Andaman Sea. However, Koh Hong has hidden delights that many travelers claim exceed even those of The Beach. The island is home to a secluded lagoon, surrounded by cliffs in a way that gives it it’s name – hong means “room” in Thai, and rooms don’t come much better than this, where the water turns from emerald to turquoise as it shimmers in the sun. Whether kayaking in the lagoon, snorkeling off the beach or taking in the entire island from its elevated viewpoint, Koh Hong is one of the most beautiful islands in the country and is easily accessible by boat from various points on Krabi’s mainland.

Controversy is never far from Maya Bay, as Thailand’s court yesterday ordered 20th Century Fox to pay for damages incurred during filming The Beach. Whilst it might be scheduled to reopen at the end of the month, closure once more could be just around the corner – particularly if local environment groups get their way – but these destinations should provide travelers with more than enough memories to make up for missing it.

New High Tech Sleeper Trains Launching Soon In Europe’s Top Destinations

With the generalized chaos affecting airports in Europe, the popularity of trains in the continent has soared to new heights. After countries like Germany and Spain slashed fares to promoted train ridership this summer, a new trend started emerging: that of overnight journeys, and now there’s even a new high tech sleeper train launching.

Unlike in North America, where companies like Amtrak were on the brink of bankruptcy due to low demand for rail links, and have only recently experienced a powerful comeback, trains are an inherent part of the wider European experience, with some routes being attractions in their own right and actively sought out by visitors.

Now, Europe is taking it up a notch by unveiling its brand new night trains, set to travel across all of its major destinations. Paris, Budapest, Milan, Vienna, you name it:

Here’s Everything We Know So Far About The Launch

Naturally, Europe has had the upper hand in responding to the train tourism surge: unlike in places like Mexico where this mode of transport is being re-introduced decades later, the Old World never ceased investing in railway, which has remained an important aspect of inter-European connectivity – even after air travel became widespread.

Now, it is banking on sleeper trains to assert its dominance in the market. More specifically, we’re witnessing the relaunch of a number of night routes that had, up until this year, been largely overshadowed by low cost, short-distance flights. As it appears, contrary to popular belief, the appeal of long luxury train rides has not faded in the slightest.

Austrian national rail company OBB has just confirmed its new NightJets are debuting next year – a generation of posh-looking, high tech trains built to maximize comfort during overnight journeys. Believe it or not, OBB’s new pan-European express even has the potential to surpass flight bookings.

Meet NightJet – Europe’s Shiny High-Speed Overnight Express

The new NightJet trains will be comprised of seven carriages:
- Two are standard seats
- Two sleeping cars able to house two travelers in each compartment
- Three further sleeping cars with four-passenger suites, as well as mini-cabins for those traveling solo and seeking more privacy
The most exciting addition, perhaps, are the new minisuites ‘at couchette prices’. These have been teased exclusively by Mark Smith, the Man in Seat 61, who had a sneak peak into the train ahead of its official launch:
They will be able to carry 254 passengers – more seats than most short-haul planes offer, including those used by Europe’s famous ultra low cost carrier Ryanair, most commonly a Boeing 737-800 with an 189-seat configuration. Additionally, the NightJet will travel at a speed of 143 miles per hour, covering longer distances in a much shorter timespan.

What Are The NightJet’s Strongest Assets?

Keeping it short, speed and amenities.

To draw a comparison, Trenitalia’s flagship Frecciarossa, Italy’s renowned high-speed trains among Europe’s best, can reach up to 186 miles per hour – only moderately faster than the NightJet. The latter is set to rival Europe’s historic, yet prohibitively-priced Venice Simplon-Orient Express, carrying passengers from Western Europe all the way to Istanbul in Turkey.

While they will obviously not be as upscale as the Orient Express, an unparalleled icon synonymous with Old World opulence, the NightJet trains are seeing some major upgrades compared to other long-distance, cross-border service around Europe:

Berths are expected to feature wireless phone charging and mood lighting

The sleeper car compartments will have their own toilets and showers

Couchette and sleeper coaches include breakfast

Trains are equipped with air conditioner, an absolute essential during Europe’s hot summer months*

*Temperature can be controlled individually in each compartment

When And Where Is It Launching?

The updated NightJets are set to make their big debut in summer 2023, and so far, service has been confirmed across 25 destinations in 8 countries:

Austria (Vienna, Salzburg, Graz, Innsbruck)

Switzerland (Zurich, Basel)

Germany (Hamburg, Berlin, Cologne, Frankfurt, Dusseldorf, Munich)

Italy (Florence, Rome, Verona, Lake Garda, Milan, Venice, Bologna)

Belgium (Brussels)

France (Paris, Strasbourg)

Croatia (Zagreb, Split)

Sweden (Stockholm)

Fares for summer 2023 are yet to be announced, though they can go as low as €29,90 at present.
