These Are The Top 7 International Destinations For Spring Break According To New Report

When spring arrives, it can feel like a world of travel opportunities is opening up in front of you.

Faced with a huge amount of choice as the northern hemisphere begins to warm up, where should you look for inspiration? We might have something to help.

As part of its annual Spring Break Travel Outlook report, major booking platform Expedia has revealed which international destinations are the most popular based on flight searches by its users.

The full list features a few of the usual suspects in North America but also a surprise destination or two from Europe and Asia.

Here’s where people are hungry to travel to this spring:

7. Barcelona, Spain

Nestled in the most visited region in all of Spain, Barcelona is a city with few equals around Europe.

Spring is one of the best times to visit Barcelona as the costs will be lower, and you’ll also avoid the infamous overcrowding that has been blighting the city in recent summers.

March also plays host to the Barcelona Beer Festival (22-24) and the Sant Medir Festival (3 March) where floats will parade along the streets and free candy is handed out.

6. Rome, Italy

Rome is a beautiful and fascinating city that requires a lot of walking if you want to see everything.

This is why spring is a great time to visit, with average temperatures usually sitting around 55F in March and April, so you won’t melt while trying to take it all in.

Compared to a summer average of 80F, it is much more pleasant to see outdoor attractions such as the Roman Forum and Colosseum.

5. Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

Ever popular with American travelers, Punta Cana is an ideal spring hideout.

With warm and sunny Caribbean weather, stunningly clean and beautiful beaches, and a host of excellent all-inclusive hotels, it’s easy to see why.

Each year it seems there are more reasons to consider visiting Punta Cana, such as a planned new train route linking it with Santo Domingo, and several new resorts scheduled to be opened over the coming months.

4. Paris, France

Ahh, Paris in the spring. Does it get any more romantic?

Well, maybe. But Paris is still a wonderful place to head to during the upcoming season.

This year, in particular, it may save you money to visit in spring before the inevitable hotel price hike this summer when the Olympic Games comes to town.

The city really comes to life during March and April, with many of its major sights enhanced by the blooming of pretty blossoms and other flowers.

And with more non-stop flights from the U.S. being added all the time, this is your sign to consider Paris.

3. London, United Kingdom

If London has been on your bucket list for a while now, then spring is a great time to tick it off.

The capital city of the United Kingdom always ranks among the world’s most visited cities thanks to its huge array of attractions and events – both of which step things up a few gears in spring.

London hosts excellent St Patrick’s Day celebrations on March 17, while the Spring Festival of Light theme park (through May 8) is a family-friendly attraction near Brent Cross Shopping Center.

2. Tokyo, Japan

The curveball in this list is the Japanese megacity that seems to be at the top of everyone’s bucket list.

Tripadvisor recently listed Tokyo as one of the top trending destinations in 2024 for good reason: people just can’t seem to get enough of the idea of Japan.

Spring is the ideal time to visit as you may get a chance to see the famous Sakura cherry blossom, which occurs from late March into early April.

Head to one of Tokyo’s many gardens or temple complexes to see it in full bloom.

1. Cancun, Mexico

What more can you say about Cancun?

It’s one of the world’s most popular beach destinations for so many reasons – and that list just keeps on growing.

Being within a stone’s throw of some of the best beaches in the world, having the benefit of an ever-growing range of all-inclusive resorts to choose from, and an ease of travel that is being enhanced with more flights and the introduction of the Maya Train – how can any self-respecting traveler resist?

Florida is always among the top destinations for a fun, sunny escape.

As winter temperatures drop by the day, perhaps more than ever Florida is on travelers’ minds.

But let’s be real – Florida is an awesome getaway no matter the season. In fact, some would argue there is too much sun at certain times of the year.

That’s what beach days are for, right? However, there is one major Florida city known for its fun year-round attractions and no beach within 60 miles.

Orlando Is Booming

Along with Miami, Orlando is a top 5 destination in the U.S. in terms of popularity right now, and with good reason.

Orlando is nonstop fun and not just for grown-ups. This city is a safe space for the entire family or the perfect excuse to act like a kid again.

The “fountain of youth” may not be real, but imaginations can run wild in a judgment-free zone in the city’s number one world-famous attraction.

We’re talking Disney World, of course. Some would say Disney World is more of a household name than the city itself.

But the heartbeat of Orlando that brings in hordes of tourists is no doubt the world’s top amusement park, plus a handful of others.

What’s New At Orlando’s Theme Parks?

Disney World is the most notable destination for countless hours of thrills, but many love visiting the Universal Orlando Resort too.

Both parks are constantly adding new experiences, so it’s not the same-ol’ same-ol’ each year. Do you know how hard it is to keep kids entertained?!

Whether the whole crew is paying a visit or not, Orlando’s theme parks are fun for all ages.

For 2024, there are three new adventures to check out at Disney World:

For Universal Orlando, 2023 was a year of many debuts, including the crowd favorite Minion Land. This year, park guests can experience Dreamworks Land with popular characters brought to life from hit films, Trolls, Shrek and Kung Fu Panda.

If these parks don’t tickle your fancy, SeaWorld Orlando and Legoland Florida have fun new additions, too, and may have fewer crowds, comparatively speaking.

New Luxury Stays

No matter your reason for visiting Orlando, not everyone desires Mickey Mouse decor in their hotel room.

Away from the magic of Disney are four new luxury hotels welcoming guests in 2024. On Lake Nona, there will be the new Aloft Orlando Lake Nona opening doors this month.

Additionally, there are a pair of new resorts tourists can stay at – Villatel Orlando Resort and the Evermore Orlando Resort.

Villatel comes with the caveat of a soft opening in 2024, with full completion expected in 2025. While the Evermore is a gargantuan property with a man-made lagoon neighboring another new lavish hotel – the Conrad Orlando.

Some Orlando hotels received cushy upgrades, too, with the most noticeable being the 5-star Waldorf Astoria Orlando, with an overhaul of select rooms and culinary offerings.

Affordable And Sunny

Even with lavish places to stay, Orlando is where fun-filled days meet affordability. It’s not only Americans flocking to Florida; Orlando has seen a surge in international arrivals too.

It is one of the most well-connected U.S. destinations. Travelers come from all over the map, knowing they can stay on a budget, all while enjoying the great weather.

There’s even a new train to reach Orlando from Miami for a Florida-packed itinerary.

Pack your sunscreen for theme parks, the Everglades National Park, or even beautiful Cocoa Beach, just an hour from downtown Orlando.

Wherever you go, this city has you covered on the extreme summer days too with interesting museums, immersive art like the soon-to-open AREA15, and educational experiences, such as the Kennedy Space Center.

After claiming the crown as one of the world’s most visited countries in 2023, it looks like nothing can stand in France’s way to repeat that feat this year.

This romantic and iconic nation holds particular favor with American travelers, as shown in a recent study by luxury tour operator Scott Dunn.

It revealed that 34% of Americans are planning to travel to France in 2024 and that there has been a significant surge in interest and bookings for the country already.

So, where are the most popular places to head in the world’s trendiest country for 2024?

I’m sure you can guess one of them, but here’s the full top 5 to get you in the mood for some ‘Je ne sais quoi’…

5. The French Riviera

This is the place to go for those who love the finer things in life.

The Côte d’Azur is a scenic stretch of beautiful coastline that’s the home of French cinema with gorgeous towns such as Cannes and St. Tropez among its jewels.

It’s one of the most cultural destinations you can visit in France, with many longstanding festivals and traditions throughout the year.

One such example can be found in Menton from February 17 to March 3, where a celebration of citrus fruits takes place in the shape of the Fete du Citron. This year will be its 90^th anniversary.

4. Nice

If you want to get specific about great destinations in the French Riviera, look no further than the capital of the region, Nice.

Close to the border with Italy, this Mediterranean gem is a stunning place to enjoy a day of sun, sightseeing, and evening soirees.

The Cours Saleya market is not to be missed, while the Colline du Chateau affords exceptional views over the old town and the port – it’s a great sunset spot.

3. The Alps

One of Europe’s premier skiing destinations, the French Alps attracts winter sports fans in their droves each year.

But it’s also a fantastic place to visit in the summer, with exceptional hiking, fishing, and cute mountain towns that just make you want to stay forever.

If you visit in early July, you will get to see some of the toughest men on the planet battle their way through the mountains as part of the world-famous Tour de France cycling race.

2. Normandy

This coastal region of northern France is a cultural icon.

From the famous Mont-Saint-Michel to the beautiful brickwork of its rural villages, which are famous for cider production – this region is like its own mini culture within a culture.

It’s also the birthplace of impressionism, and 2024 will be the 150th anniversary of the art style.

A special Normandy Impressionist Festival will be running all summer long to celebrate the work and influence of the likes of Edouard Manet and more.

2024 will also be a great year to visit Normandy if you’re a history buff.

It’s the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Normandy in the Second World War and a host of events will be taking place between 1-16 June to commemorate it.

1. Paris

It had to be, didn’t it? It should surprise no one that 77% of those surveyed in this report said that Paris was in their French travel plans, and why not?

The ‘City of Light’ has more than enough to offer to fill a week or two for even the most experienced traveler – world-class museums, an unrivaled café culture, incredible architecture – it’s hard to know where to start.

Despite all this, many travelers still have a love-hate relationship with Paris, and this year might not help, as prices are expected to soar during the Olympics, which is hosted in the city from July 26 to August 11.

And If None Of Those Take Your Fancy?

This survey also threw up a few popular destinations that just missed out on the top 5 but are well worth considering if you’re planning on taking a trip to France.

They include the cultural seaside metropolis of Marseille, the historic wine region capital of Bordeaux, and the region where the world’s favorite bubbles come from: Champagne.

These 5 Surprising Countries Are Among The Fastest Growing Destinations In Europe

While Europe’s status as one of the most popular travel destinations on Earth hasn’t changed, there’s been a huge shift in the dynamics of the continent’s tourism industry, with old-school hubs garnering a reputation as tourist traps and smaller, lesser-known countries emerging as the region’s trendiest destinations.

That’s exactly what the latest Statista report on European travel showed, too.

The German data-gathering company set out to discover the fastest-growing regions within the continent, and travelers have made their preferences pretty clear – Central and Eastern Europe are leading the way by a large margin.

Five countries, in particular, are drawing in visitors like never before:

Poland

Poland has always been considered one of those great, budget-friendly destinations that fly a bit under the radar, but if these recent numbers are anything to go by, that’s about to change pretty soon.

Travelers are growing tired of the suffocating crowds of Paris and the littered attractions of Venice, and, in contrast, Poland’s gorgeous landscapes and undiscovered charm seem like a breath of fresh air.

Whether you’re planning to explore the gothic, baroque, and neoclassical buildings of Warsaw (which, frankly, are not too far off from what you’d find in Prague) or the winding streets of Krakow, one thing’s for sure – Poland will exceed even your wildest expectations.

Hungary

Though Hungary is mainly known for its capital, Budapest, the country is currently undergoing a tourism renaissance that extends beyond the wonders that lie on the shores of the iconic Danube River.

Don’t get me wrong, there’s a lot to love about Budapest – from the fairytale-like skyline to St. Stephen’s Basilica and the stunning Buda Castle – but if you’re planning a trip to Hungary, don’t overlook the dreamy countryside, either.

The wine regions of Eger and Tokaj, for example, are the perfect melting pot of warm-hearted people, surreal views, and world-class food.

Pécs and the serene landscapes of Lake Balaton are not to be missed, either.

Czech Republic

While Prague has long been a staple of every European city break itinerary, the gorgeous Goth hub along with the rest of the country it represents is currently breaking all-time tourism records.

Since the capital’s many, many unmissable attractions are already famous enough (think

Prague Castle, Charles Bridge, Old Town Square, St. Vitus Cathedral, Wenceslas Square, and Astronomical Clock), I’m going to focus on the underrated allure of the likes of Český Krumlov, Olomouc, and Telč instead.

It’s places like these where you can truly take in the timeless beauty of the Czech Republic in its most authentic form, so if you’re lucky enough to explore Central Europe anytime soon, make sure to venture beyond the well-trodden paths of Prague.

Georgia

Having welcomed over 7 million international travelers in the past year alone, Georgia has officially left its “off-the-beaten-path” reputation behind.

Travelers coming to Europe are starting to appreciate the country’s warm hospitality, breathtaking landscapes, and unique cultural heritage, probably best experienced through the ancient cave city of Uplistsikhe.

City trippers can still find all of the trendy bars and restaurants in Tbilisi, the capital, whereas those eager to explore the wilderness of the local nature can’t go wrong with a hike through Svaneti.

Romania

When most of us think of Romania, our minds immediately go to the iconic Dracula Castle, which has long been a draw for curious travelers and movie lovers alike.

In reality, though, there’s a lot more to love and admire about this southeastern European country than just the centuries-old tales of vampires – Bucharest, in particular, is one of the most charming, attraction-filled capitals you’ll find in the entire continent.

Here, you’ll get to take in the sights of the Romanian Athenaeum, the Herastrau Park, the Triumphal Arch, and the Palace of Parliament, places that not only provide the perfect background for some truly one-of-a-kind travel pictures but also hold a long, fascinating history that’s worth exploring.

Aside from the vivid city scene, travelers coming to Romania have to explore the country’s remarkably diverse landscapes, from the Carpathian Mountains and the Black Sea coast to the medieval towns of Sibiu and Sighișoar.

I Have Visited Every City In California And These Are My 5 Favorite Destinations

They say the West Coast is the best coast and I will back up that claim any day of the week. I may have been born and raised in Texas, but some of the best years of my life have been spent in California.

I’m not going to sugarcoat the frustrations of living here, but at the end of the day, there is no other place I’d rather call home.

And I know so because I’ve left before and the grass truly wasn’t greener both literally and figuratively.

The Golden State may not get everything right, but it’s one of the best places to travel in the country.

I have lived here for 10 years and visited every city. These are my 5 favorite destinations:

5) San Francisco

I know, I know – San Francisco has changed. We even included this awesome city as a place not to visit this year and with good reason.

If Tony Bennett left his heart in San Francisco today someone would steal it and sell it on the black market.

The crime waves and unsightly zombie apocalypse-esque streets are something I’m able to overlook because I love it so much and have never had a bad time.

Even as unfortunate as the city has changed, the cultural neighborhoods, amazing views, fun attractions and phenomenal food scene remains, which is why it barely cracks my top 5.

Having traveled to about 30 countries, my favorite restaurant on the planet is still Terra Cotta Warrior located in the Outer Sunset neighborhood.

It’s a no-frills, yet authentic, Chinese restaurant specializing in cuisine from the Shaanxi province. If this place ever shuts down, SF may not even crack my top 10. That’s how good it is!

4) Malibu

Spoiler alert: Los Angeles proper will never crack my favorites list for anything. Personally, I believe it’s the most overhyped city in America, but outside of the city limits is where LA is at its best.

Malibu is so much more than a Miley Cyrus song. This ritzy beach town is a place where average Joe’s like me can blend in and hobnob with the rich and famous, unlike Beverly Hills where I feel looked down on after making a Target run.

Lined with delicious upscale restaurants, really nice beaches and the scenic Topanga State Park for incredible views and hikes, Malibu is an awesome place to visit.

The coastal drive itself is amazing. Just plan ahead for traffic during Spring Break and summer.

3) Sequoia National Park

My favorite place in California to immerse myself in nature beyond the state’s incredible beaches is without a doubt Sequoia National Park.

While you can fly into Fresno (definitely not a favorite), a road trip makes the adventure more fun with stops in charming small towns like Kernville.

Sequoia’s backroads are indescribably beautiful. Just prepare better than I did by renting a Toyota Yaris.

Regardless, a trip to Sequoia should honestly be bucket-list worthy. Few places have given me a sense of appreciation for nature more than this park.

Seeing pictures of the mountains and massive trees online are one thing, but seeing them in person is a whole different level.

2) Orange County (Beaches)

Orange County covers a lot of ground in southern California with cities such as Santa Ana, Irvine, and Anaheim, but I’m not here to promote Disneyland anymore than it needs to be.

Orange County’s quaint beach towns are gorgeous and it’s honestly hard to pick just one. Each of them tends to have its own unique vibe, such as luxurious Laguna Beach to more laid-back Dana Point and San Clemente.

If I had to pick one it would depend on my budget for the day, but it would be a toss-up between Laguna Beach and San Clemente.

You can’t go wrong with either, although San Clemente definitely has much more of a local feel as a surfer’s favorite hangout.

1) San Diego

My home for 10 years and hopefully many more, San Diego is without question my favorite destination in California.

Traveling is my first love and one of few passions in life, but no matter where I am or how long I’ve been there, I always look forward to coming back home to this beautiful city.

Often overshadowed by the gargantuan size of Los Angeles, San Diego is still a major city with plenty to do beyond planning beach days from Coronado to Oceanside.

With historic districts such as Old Town known as the “birthplace of California” to cultural neighborhoods like City Heights where more than 80 dialects of languages are spoken, San Diego isn’t just a “beach town” per se.

While it’s definitely no digital nomad haven with a high cost of living, my favorite part about San Diego other than Mexican Food, of course, is you can go hiking in the mountains, hit up the beach and see the snow all in the same day.

There is always something to do outside in the city, but the delightful small towns like Julian being in close reach make for an easy escape for a change of pace when needed.

And after a night in the wild Gaslamp District downtown, you will definitely need a change of pace.

If you’re struggling to narrow down where you want to get your dose of sun and good times, then a new study may have the inspiration you seek.

Travel booking giant Expedia has examined flight search data from its users for the period between March 5 and April 26 to determine which domestic destinations will be most popular for this year’s spring break – and the results are fascinating.

The list is a comprehensive one that covers all the bases for each kind of spring break vacationer – here’s the top 7:

7. Fort Lauderdale, Florida

A quieter and slightly less expensive destination than nearby Miami, Fort Lauderdale is becoming an incredibly popular pick for spring break travelers.

With a 24-mile stretch of beautiful beaches and fantastic restaurants that specialize in seafood and Latin-influenced cuisine, Fort Lauderdale has all the ingredients for a great spring break.

If you’re looking to keep spending down, many of its attractions are free such as Anne Kolb Nature Center, Fort Lauderdale Swap Shop flea market, and concerts at Hollywood Beach Broadwalk.

6. Phoenix, Arizona

A record number of people flew through Phoenix’s Harbor International Airport last year, showcasing that it’s a firm favorite among travelers.

The weather in Phoenix in spring is ideal, with March temperatures usually averaging around 75F and very low levels of rainfall.

There are plenty of great events to help you enjoy a party atmosphere, such as M3F Festival (March 1-2) and Innings Festival (February 23-24) – both of which feature live music and amusements.

5. New York, New York

The ‘Big Apple’ will always be one of the most popular domestic destinations at any time of year.

That was proven in 2023 when a record number of travelers flew through the three major airports that serve NYC.

Away from its unrivaled selection of incredible restaurants covering the entire price scale, New York has several chilled things you can enjoy during spring such as a walk along the High Line, which will be bursting with floral color.

4. Los Angeles, California

Los Angeles has the perfect spring break combination of amazing nightclubs and bars to dance the night away, as well as golden sandy beaches to slowly bring yourself back to life under the warm sun the next day.

There’s almost no end to the excellent hotels you can choose to stay at in Los Angeles as well as some unique spots to take in the views over the city while you enjoy a cocktail such as 71Above and Perch LA.

In between parties, Los Angeles offers the opportunity to tour its famous movie studios and even has many miles of hiking trails throughout the city to help you walk off the hangover.

3. Miami, Florida

For great food, culture, and nightlife, American cities don’t come much better equipped than Miami.

This beloved Floridian destination has been breaking all kinds of records for tourism over the last year, and it looks set to remain popular as we move into this spring.

However, one thing to be aware of with Miami this year is that local authorities have been talking about introducing curfews for spring break this year between midnight and 6am in popular locations such as South Beach.

This is due to some issues the city experienced last year with unruly revelers and crime.

2. Las Vegas, Nevada

Fresh from breaking a tourism record in 2023 and then hosting the Super Bowl this February, it seems that Las Vegas is an even more exciting place to visit than usual right now.

And with more affordable flights than ever heading into ‘Sin City’ combined with accommodation prices that seem to have stayed a little lower compared to many other major American destinations, it makes an ideal place to enjoy thawing out after winter.

1. Orlando, Florida

There really is something for all the family in Orlando.

From the theme parks to some truly world-class dining and nightlife, this city seems like it was ready-made for a spring vacation.

While it’s still too soon to say what 2024 has in store for travelers, it’s clear that a handful of once-overlooked destinations are about to become some of the year’s trendiest hotspots.

Recently released data from the International Air Transport Association (AITA) showed that not only is global travel continuing to recover at record rates, but a couple of destinations are actually seeing unprecedented numbers of visitors enter their borders, surpassing even their pre-pandemic highs.

The report showed that these 5 European countries, in particular, are leading the way as the continent’s fastest-growing destinations.

5. Poland

Coming in at no. 5 is arguably the most surprising country on today’s list – Poland.

Though international travelers have historically overlooked Poland in favor of its more famous neighbors, like Germany or Czechia, it’s becoming increasingly obvious that the cheap prices, safe atmosphere, and gorgeous sights found in the Central European country are just too good to miss out on.

Now that travelers are starting to become a bit more budget-conscious, finding a reasonably priced yet attraction-filled country like this is not something to take for granted.

Those looking to explore Poland’s storied past can walk through Krakow’s Old Town, Warsaw’s Royal Castle, or the heartbreaking Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial, whereas visitors seeking to get more in tune with the country’s stunning nature will love a hike through the Tatra Mountains or the Masurian Lakes.

4. Malta

Having had the chance to explore some of the 316 km² (122 sq mi) that comprise the tenth-smallest country in the world, I can attest to the fact that Malta is criminally underrated.

Valletta, the capital, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with Baroque palaces, churches, and gardens, though what I found most interesting was the impeccable blend of European and African cultural influences felt all throughout the city.

However, if you’re thinking about choosing Malta as your next summertime escape, Valletta is not the best place to stay.

Instead, think about visiting the northern part of the island, near Mellieħa Bay, where the white-sanded beaches share a striking resemblance to those you’ll find in the Maldives.

3. Iceland

Considering how big solo travel has gotten these past few years, the fact that such a stunning, safe destination made it to today’s list should come as no surprise.

The land of fire and ice is not only home to some of the world’s most stunning attractions, like the Blue Lagoon, the Golden Circle, and the otherworldly volcanic terrains, but also a cultural treasure trove with a long history in music, literature, and art – and there’s no better place to experience all that and more than Reykjavik, the iconic capital.

5 Incredible Destinations You Can Visit From Cancun On The Maya Train Right Now

The Maya Train is the greatest infrastructure project to have been launched in Mexico in years. Traveling on a loop around the Yucatan Peninsula and as far southwest as Palenque, it has greatly improved connectivity between some of the country’s top tourist sites since its launch last December.

These include Cancun, the bustling resort zone on the Caribbean coast, party capital and archaeological zone, all-in-one Tulum, and even charming lesser-known spots like Bacalar, best known for its multicolored lake, and Merida, a hugely historical city with preserved colonial architecture.

Unfortunately, not all of the Maya Train’s planned lines are up and running, and some tourists have been noticeably disappointed when landing in Cancun, hoping to catch a scenic train down to the nearest beach town, only to find out some stations are not open yet.

The project is only expected to be finished this upcoming March at the earliest – knowing Mexico, there will probably be additional delays – so if you’re flying to the Mexican Caribbean this winter and you’re keen on testing out this brand new railway, where exactly can you go?

Tulum, Playa Del Carmen, and much of the Riviera Maya are not available as Maya Train destinations right now, but you can still travel to these five incredible spots (in this exact order):

Chichen Itza

Officially the most visited tourist attraction in all of Mexico, Chichen Itza is now more accessible than ever, hosting its very own Maya Train station.

This means it is no longer necessary for tourists to book expensive day tours or pay exorbitant transfer fees when visiting the archaeological complex.

That’s great news already, but if you’re not familiar with the historical site, you may be wondering what it is about Chichen Itza that makes it so special: to put it simply, it stands among the best-preserved and most impressive ancient cities known to mankind.

With a towering step pyramid, richly-decorated temples depicting unique carvings, and a number of sacred cenotes – sinkholes filled with the bluest of waters previously used as sacrificial chambers – it is one of 7 New Wonders of the World, and a surviving symbol of the erstwhile Mayan civilization.

Izamal

Competing for the title of most Instagrammable small town in Mexico, if not the entire world, Izamal is a charming cobbled settlement a stone’s throw away from the larger city of Merida, easily distinguished by its endless rows of bright-yellow-painted houses.

The Maya Train also calls here, and if you do choose to hop off for the day, some of the main sights that may interest you other than the picturesque streets include the lesser-known Mayan pyramid of Kinich Kak Moo and the massive Convent of San Antonio de Padua.

This yellow-washed gem – in line with the city’s overall theme – was one of the first built by the Spanish in the New World, at a time when most of Mexico was still a colony, and its central Atrium is second in size only to the Vatican’s.

Merida

Next on the Maya Train line, you’ll find Merida, the capital of the state of Yucatan (named after the peninsula), and possibly one of the prettiest cities in the country, famous for its stunning Spanish-era architecture and multicultural heritage.

It is a city of two conflicting cultures, Mayan and Spanish, with many of the historical buildings you see standing today being, in fact, built out of disassembled, far older pre-Columbian structures, including the imposing cathedral and colonial palaces that dominate the skyline.

Additionally, Merida has been dubbed the safest major state capital in Mexico due to its low rates of pickpocketing and other forms of petty crime: based on the U.S. State Department’s own definition, safety levels are on a par with European countries like Iceland, Finland and Norway.

Maxcanu

The first stop on the Merida-Campeche line, Maxcanu is a quaint, laid-back pueblo that has largely thwarted the poisonous overdevelopment plaguing most of Yucatan: prices still reflect living standards in Mexico, restaurants are typically family-owned, and gentrification is not a common concern.

It’s hard to know whether it will stay this way for long with the arrival of the train, and thus more tourists, but if you’re looking for a chance to experience ‘deep Mexico’, away from the luxurious resorts and Americanized coast, this may be a good time to visit Maxcanu while it’s still a ‘secret’.

On top of its unspoiled Mexicanness, it has a number of Mayan ruins in its vicinity, such as Oxkintok, where a one-of-a-kind Mayan labyrinth has been unearthed, the ruined Chunchucmil, and the otherwordly Calcehtok caves.

Campeche

The last entry on this list and the last stop on the Merida-Campeche line, San Francisco de Campeche, is yet another gorgeous colonial treasure built atop a conquered Mayan city, though unlike Merida, very few traces of the previous settlement remain.

Campeche is special for having most of its Spanish-built city walls intact: it is one of two cities in North America, alongside Quebec City in Canada, to have retained them, and its historical value is truly impossible to measure.

While Spaniards lived within the walls, the native Mayans were pushed out to the outskirts, and this heart-wrenching, yet inherently fascinating History is everywhere to be seen today, be it in native-dominated barrios with a distinctly Mayan character, or 500-year-old, ornate colonial churches.
