Some Canadian budget airlines have met their maple…I mean maker…lately, but lesser known Flair Airlines is one of the last true low-cost carriers standing.

And with $1 flights, how could they be beat?

If you thought U.S. budget airlines have been riding the struggle bus, think again.

Lynx and Canada Jetlines couldn’t pay the bills any more and Swoop was bought out by much more popular WestJet, leaving only Flair and Air Canada’s Rouge.

As for Edmonton-based Flair, they fly to some really cool places across Canada, Mexico, and the U.S., where 2 lucky American cities can score incredibly cheap deals to Canada’s prettiest fall destinations.

$1 Nonstop Flights From Las Vegas (LAS)

You can’t buy much for a buck anymore, but you can buy a flight this Canada this fall.

And before you ask, “what’s the catch?”, there are none, except to say death and taxes can’t be escaped up north either.

Full transparency: all the $1 flights are non-refundable and will cost you between $16 – $39 including fees and taxes, but do not include any add-ons, such as seat selection and luggage.

Although, like America’s budget airlines, the lowest class allows for a free ‘personal bag‘ no bigger than 6 x 13 x 17 (inches) and weighing no more than 15.5 lbs.

Flair is offering cheap flights from Las Vegas to 2 awesome Canadian cities just in time to see a colorful shift in the treetops.

First up is Calgary (YYC), where $1 base fares are valid on September 13th and September 20th.

Explore this vastly underrated city overshadowed by Vancouver and Toronto and a gateway into one of North America’s most stunning mountain destinations, Banff.

Some might say Calgary is the ‘Denver of Canada’, a fun, thriving city nestled in the majestic Rockies.

Banff is only an hour and a half away for a more quaint, immersive mountain town and an excellent choice for fall foliage photo-ops.

Second is Edmonton (YEG), another overlooked Canadian city unless you’re an avid hockey fan. Book $1 flights for September 17th and 19th for an outdoor lover’s haven popular for hiking, cycling, and kayaking.

And one attraction that may surprise you is the West Edmonton Mall, the largest shopping center in North America, bruising the Mall of America’s ego.

$1 Nonstop Flights From Orlando (MCO)

Orlando is one-upping Las Vegas, seeing $1 flights to 3 underrated Canadian cities. And I’ll be honest up front -you possibly haven’t heard of any of them.

But let’s start with the one that stands out the most as an alternative airport to Toronto, a city you’ve definitely heard of!

Flights to Kitchener-Waterloo (YKF), roughly an hour drive from downtown Toronto, are worth taking for a bit of extra road time.

$1 base fares are available November 2nd and November 5th, where fall colors should be in full bloom in Canada’s top cosmopolitan city.

What may be most impressive, and should be snatched up right away, is the fact Flair is offering $1 fares the week of Christmas which almost never happens with any airline.

Typically, airfares spike through the roof on major holidays, so if you’re up for a winter trip into Canada’s lesser known, take advantage of flights from Orlando to:
- London (YXU) – December 20th and 23rd
- St. John’s (YSJ) – December 22nd

Not that there are any immediate bankruptcy concerns, but travelers may want to know Flair has struggled financially.

Let’s just say travel insurance is always a wise idea even for the most profitable airlines, especially when traveling internationally.

Flair Airlines is a true budget airline through and through, offering dirt cheap airfare and nickel and diming everything else.

Make sure to know your allowable luggage before checking in as fees at the gate become doubled and even nearly tripled at the gate.

Low-cost airlines are typically bare-bones and no-frills, so expect to pay up for refreshments and seats, but random allocation is free.

These Are 4 Affordable South American Countries Offering Digital Nomad Visas

South America is one of the top digital nomad destinations right now, highly sought-after not only for its tropical climate and Luso-Hispanic heritage but also its affordability, especially if you’re an American getting paid in dollars and, most importantly, friendly visa policies.

Several South American countries now offer the increasingly popular Digital Nomad Visa (DNV), which allows for extended stays in a national territory while also sometimes exempting holders from regular taxation and the deeper level of economic integration regular expats are subject to.

If you’re considering relocating as a remote worker, you’ll be glad to know these four hugely affordable countries offer simple, easy-to-apply-for DNVs valid for the long-term:

Peru

The newest addition to the ever-expanding DNV list, Peru has confirmed a nomad visa will be introduced sometime soon, and while further details are yet to be outlined, we know already it will be valid for an initial 365 days, renewable ahead of expiration.

Applying for a DNV will typically require presenting a valid passport, having a clean criminal background, and earning above a certain income threshold, which, in Peru’s case, is unlikely to be discriminatorily high, taking into account the country’s average cost of living of $872 per month.

While the visa isn’t yet launched, most foreign nationals, including American citizens, can base themselves in Peru for up to 90 days visa-free, and while this is hardly enough time to explore the Incan gem thoroughly, you will certainly get a feel for the country ahead of traveling onward.

Some of the best nomad destinations in Peru are Lima, a metropolitan coastal capital within short driving distance of gorgeous Pacific beaches, Cusco, gateway to the Peruvian Andes and the World Wonder that is Machu Picchu, and Arequipa, filled with volcanic stone-built, Baroque buildings.

Argentina

Considered the second best digital nomad visa in the world, Argentina’s DNV is certainly one of the easiest to get: officially called a ‘Transitory Residence‘, it enables any nomad who is of good character, has entered the country legally and presents a current valid passport to stay for 180 days.

This period can be extended, provided the same conditions are met and nomads are not required to apply ahead of traveling.

In fact, this visa can only be obtained while you’re already in Argentina as a tourist, making this an incredibly enticing option for visitors hoping to extend their stay.

Argentina’s immigration rules are pretty non-severe, to put it simply, and though we wouldn’t recommend pushing your luck, even if you enter as a tourist, fail to apply for an extension to your initial 90 days, and simply overstay, all you’re required to do is pay a small fee of $14.92.

When it comes to choosing the perfect ‘workcation’ spot, options are commonly narrowed down to beautiful Buenos Aires, with its varied selection of work-friendly cafes and high levels of safety (it’s called the Paris of the South for a reason) and vibrant colonial city of Cordoba.

In terms of affordability, Argentina is incredibly cheap by American standards, with monthly expenses for budget-conscious nomads totalling only $706, on average.

Living in Buenos Aires, U.S. travelers can stretch their dollars a lot further thanks to a seriously-depreciated Argentine peso.

Brazil

Brazil is one of the most popular nomad spots right now, with laid-back beach towns like Trancoso and Arraial d’Ajuda being flooded by foreign residents, and of course, exciting metropolises Rio and Sao Paulo ranking high on Nomad List for the ‘great’ fun and multicultural scene they offer.

The cost of living in Brazil can vary depending on where you’re based—Sao Paulo can cost as much as $2,089, while Northeastern Salvador is much cheaper at $835—but all in all, South America’s largest and most diverse country is pretty affordable for American visitors.

The Brazilian DNV is valid for up to two years, and to qualify, all that is required is, not to sound repetitive, a pristine criminal record, citizenship of an eligible country, which the U.S. and Canada are, and, most importantly, earnings of at least $1,500 per month.

Applications can be made online ahead of traveling, or alternatively, nomads may try to fly to Brazil first as tourists and change their status once inside the country; however, if you’re an American or Canadian citizen, you should know that will no longer be possible from April.

Brazil is re-introducing visa requirements for U.S. and Canada passport holders, which means you will no longer be able to obtain a visa on arrival.

Colombia

Launched as early as 2022, Colombia’s DNV has been touted as one of the easiest to apply for, as it does not require advance application: all you need to present is your valid tourist stamp, bank statements proving funds of only $684 per month, a passport and health insurance.

Unlike Brazil, Colombia’s tourist visa policies are not tightening up, and Americans can still fly visa-free and get a 90-day entry stamp, renewable for an additional three months, when not in need of a long-term visa as described above.

Top nomad hubs to consider are Medellin, possibly the most thrilling city break in the continent, Bogota, a sprawling capital with a concentration of museums and historical landmarks so impressive it’s earned an ‘Athens of the South’ monicker, and the walled Caribbean port of Cartagena.

When living in Colombia, foreigners are advised to familiarize themselves with local safety guidelines, as it is the only country in this list the U.S. State Department advises Americans to ‘reconsider’ visiting, due to the uncontrolled levels of crime across major cities.

Due to its amazing weather, rich biodiversity, and low prices – it can cost as little as $686 to live frugally in Colombia – it is still a nomad favorite, but extra caution is urged, particularly if you easily stand out as a ‘gringo’, as locals would say.

By keeping a low profile, avoiding peripheral districts with higher poverty rates, and not flashing valuable items in public – this includes iPhones and watches – you can increase your chances of not being targeted by criminals.

These 2 Beautiful European Countries Are Offering Unlimited Train Travel For Only $55

Perhaps the most unlikely travel trend to have resurged in 2023, train travel is back in full force, with numerous countries across the globe either reinstating previously defunded routes, or even launching brand new ones – scenic rides across the Mayan Riviera, anyone?

Much of the action has been centered, however, in Europe: boasting a well-connected train network linking multiple countries, and with its goal to reduce carbon emissions in the medium-term drastically, the Old Continent has turned to the railway to boost tourism.

Now, both Germany and Hungary, two of Europe’s most beautiful destinations, are offering unlimited all-you-can-travel train passes for around $55, and if we were you, we wouldn’t want to miss out, especially when there is no way of telling how long the generous offers will last.

One can always use some further encouragement, so perhaps it’s worth mentioning there is an additional third country you can travel in for free, and it is just as fascinating as the other two.

Lucky for you, this mysterious, hugely-underrated destination is only a stone’s throw away from the German border.

First of all, let’s have a look at the German and Hungarian offers.

How Does The German Pass Work?

Germany launched their €49 ticket, equaling roughly $55, last March.

The measure, believed to be temporary at the time, proved so successful the Government has continued applying it, and it looks set to become permanent, with Transport Minister Volker Wissing referring to it as the ‘biggest public transport reform in German History’.

The Deutschlandticket, as it is formally called, or simply ‘Germany Ticket’, allows holders to travel as many times as they want, on any regional public transportation routes, across almost the entire country for a set monthly price.

With that being said, its validity applies mostly to local and medium-distance transportation, such as metropolitan regions or intra-state travel, and it functions as a digital subscription that can be canceled ahead of the next month’s billing.

Essentially, subscribers can board any short and medium-distance buses and trains they would like during their subscription period, based on the region of Germany they are currently traveling.

For instance, those using the pass in metropolitan Berlin can now travel from the German capital to the neighboring State of Brandenburg freely, without paying additional fees, as Brandenburg would be considered short to medium-distance travel.

On the other hand, pass holders cannot board trains from Berlin to Frankfurt or Berlin to Cologne without booking an independent train ticket, as it would entail boarding a long-distance train.

This is true for all long-distance routes, including any trains operated by DB Fernverkehr AG, RE included, and FlixTrain (IC, EC, and ICE).

Ticket validity varies per region, and it all depends on where the pass is purchased and, most importantly, which region it is linked to and where it is activated.

Still, it is a great way to save money traveling in Germany as the overall cost of multi-city train journeys within a single state, such as Bavaria, home to Munich, Nuremberg, Regensburg, Würzburg, Bamberg and other popular historical hotspots will normally cost a lot more than $55 without a pass.

Additionally, pass holders can hop on certain eligible trains from/to stations in neighboring countries when operated by a German operator and when the pass is associated with the state or region of entry.

These include Tønder in Denmark, Wissembourg in France, Basel in Switzerland, and Świnoujście in Poland.

Tickets can be purchased directly from Germany’s national Deutsche Banh or from local transport providers in different cities.

What About Hungary?

As for Hungary, two travel passes are available, one nationwide and one for counties.

Traveling across the Eastern European gem, tourists can purchase a ‘National Travel Card‘, granting them access to not only every train but every bus line in the country, as long as the following companies operate it:
- MÁV-START
- MÁV-HÉV
- GYSEV
- Volánbusz (buses only)
For the duration of the pass, which lasts 30 days, you are free to city-hop at leisure, from the stately Austrian-Hungarian thermal pool hotspot that is Budapest to the serene Lake Balaton, known as the ‘Hungarian Sea’, to the ancient cultural hotspot of Pécs, near the Croatian border.

Much like the Germany Ticket, Hungary’s national pass costs only 18,900 Hungarian forint, or approximately $55, and foreign visitors are eligible to buy them at more than 1,100 ticket booths around Hungary.

All you have to do is simply walk into any train station, find the nearest MÁV-START, GYSEV, or Volánbusz office, or simply a vending machine, and select the option that best suits you.

It is worth noting this pass cannot be used in municipal services, meaning you cannot use it for taking the tram or metro in the wider metropolitan zone of Budapest, or any regional public transportation in any specific Hungarian city.

In a way, it is the opposite of the German pass.

Fortunately, Hungary then introduced a ‘County Travel Card’, allowing holders unlimited bus and rail travel in one of its 19 counties. It costs roughly $27, and it’s the perfect option for tourists looking to stay in a single location for a while longer.

This option is sure to make digital nomads happy, as Budapest is quickly becoming one of the world’s top nomad destinations, and they often reside in the city for between one to three months at a time.

If you are a student, you should know you are eligible for a 90 percent discount buying these tickets, so make sure you bring a valid international student ID mentioning your status.

What About The Third Mysterious Country?

There is still one country missing, after all.

$55 all-you-can-travel train passes sound great, but how about unlimited free travel for both residents and tourists alike?

Luxembourg is currently the only European nation to extend this privilege to non-tax-paying visitors, as they can hop on any train or bus of their liking around the principality without pre-booking and explore one of the prettiest, most fairytalish destinations extensively sans exorbitant ticket fees.

You read that right, no ifs or but’s or caveats:

This is all-encompassing free public transportation, regardless of route, train line, or distance, applying to all nationalities, provided it is a national route that does not cross Luxembourg’s borders with France, Germany, or Belgium.

Some of the top sights to see in ‘Lux’, as Europeans commonly call it, include Luxembourg City, the compact national capital, famous for its landmark medieval fortress and cobbled historic center, Vianden, where one of the largest and most impressive medieval castles sits, and the charming central town of Ettelbruck.

As Luxembourg is a tiny country, you can cover much of the territory in three to five days, making it a perfect intermediate destination on your cross-country European trip.

The free pass is only available on the Renfe train line for the Cercanías, Rodalies, and Media Distancia services.

To get the free pass, travelers must first register on Renfe.com or through the Renfe app, then select a route and choose “recurrent” as their rate.

You will then pay a deposit of 10 Euros (approximately $11 USD) for commuter routes or 20 Euros (approximately $22 USD) for medium-distance routes.

These deposits are refundable at the end of your subscription, providing that you’ve taken the required 16 one-way trips during the four-month subscription period.

The next subscription period is May 1^st through August 31^st, during which time travelers can make unlimited multi-journey trips with their passes.

There are station attendants available to help with this as well as ticket vending machines.

Finland

Georgia

The “Work Remotely From Georgia” program is not technically a visa, but is more or less the same thing. A reminder that Georgia is a very open country to many passport holders, and Americans and U.K. Nationals can stay one-year visa-free.

Germany

- Who Can Qualify: Those working in certain ‘liberal’ professions

Germany has a Freelancer Visa, which mostly applies to those who are self-employed in liberal professions, such as teachers, writers, etc.

Another Italian Town Is Offering Money To Move There, But What’s The Catch?

We’ve all read the headlines – “Beautiful town in Italy is paying people to move there” and “Houses in this Italian village are selling for $1.” But what is behind these seemingly too-good-to-be-true offers? Are they real, and if so, why do these amazing deals pop up so frequently? What’s the catch?

Presicce, Puglia

Earlier this week, officials from the town of Presicce, located in Puglia, announced they will pay outsiders up to $30,000 to move there. Should you start packing your bags?

About The Area:

This beautiful town is located at the southern tip of the heel of Italy’s boot, and along with the neighboring town of Acquarica, it is home to around 9,000 residents. Historically known for its highly productive and renowned olive oil industry, Presicce has been referred to as the “city of green gold.”

Hidden under the town center is an elaborate system of olive mills that tourists can still visit today. The town is surrounded by olive groves and cycle and hiking trails and is about a 15-minute drive to the coast.

The Fine Print:

In order to qualify for the payment, you’ll have to move to Presicce, purchase an abandoned home in the town’s historical center, and renovate it, if needed. While Americans are permitted to buy property in Italy, they will need to sort out the appropriate visas in order to stay longer than 90 days or look into becoming an Italian Citizen.

The $30,000 sum will be split in two, with one part given to help pay for the home and the other intended for renovations and refurbishment. Eligible houses are determined by local authorities and must have been built prior to 1991

Why Are They Doing This?

In short, Presicce’s population is declining, and officials are hoping this incentive will breathe new life into the town and give a boost to the local economy. Only half of the town’s 9,000 residents live in the historical section, and this incentive will hopefully revitalize the dwindling center.

Speaking to CNN, local councilor Alfredo Palese said, “There are many empty homes in the historical center built before 1991 which we would like to see alive again with new residents. It is a pity witnessing how our old districts full of history, wonderful architecture and art are slowly emptying.”

Calabrian officials hope that their “active residency income” project will boost the economy of Southern Italy and help out small communities that are under threat of even more devastating population loss. What’s the catch?

- Must commit to starting a new small business or taking over an existing business
- The maximum age is 40

In 2008, a town in southern Sicily made headlines when the mayor announced they’d be selling off homes for as little as $1. Since then, 34 other Italian towns have followed suit with similar programs. Yes, there are homes for sale for next to nothing, but the costs can quickly add up, as most homes on offer are in need of significant restoration and can come with additional expenses like closing costs, translation services, and taxes.

Is It Worth It?

Italy often makes headlines for incentivizing tourists and potential new residents to join them in an attempt to revitalize their numerous small towns and villages. These creative incentives are certainly worth a shot for Italian municipalities. If successful, many towns could be saved from dying out, but it is likely too soon to know how well these programs are working.

From a new resident’s perspective, there will be many factors to consider when taking up one of these offers. While the increase in remote work makes rural living more accessible to many, there will also be unique challenges for those who choose to move to one of these small towns.

Many do not have great internet connectivity, and some towns have little opportunity to make a living locally. Language barriers, limited social life, and isolation are all factors to consider before jumping on one of these offers.

This Airline Will Begin Offering New York To London Flights For $116

The competition for budget transatlantic travel is increasing, and travelers are benefitting the most.

Norse Atlantic Airways—a new start-up company offering budget flights between Europe and the U.S.—have announced they will begin budget daily flights between New York City‘s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and London‘s Gatwick Airport (LGW).

The service will start on August 12, 2012, with $322 introductory fares for round trips. Anyone who’s ever traveled across the pond will know this is excellent value for money. In addition, one-way flights to London are as cheap as $116!

Norse Atlantic Airways will join Play Airlines in attempting to dominate budget travel over the Atlantic Ocean.

The New Flights Between NYC and London
- The new flight route will depart from London at 1 p.m and arrive in New York at 3.55 p.m the same day (local time.)
- The flight from New York will depart at 5.55 p.m and arrive in London at 6.20 a.m the next day (local time.)
All flights in London will arrive at London Gatwick Airport (LGW.) Traveling into Central London from London Gatwick Airport is very straightforward.

Although the airport is situated 29.5 miles south of Central London, the train will bring travelers to Victoria Station in Central London in under 30 minutes.

Other London airports include London Heathrow, London Stansted, and London Luton. You may fly to these airports with other airlines.

London is the best city in Europe for finding connecting flights to Mainland European destinations.

All flights arriving and departing from NYC will land at JFK airport.

Norse Atlantic Airways has the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner in a two-class configuration, including an economy class and a premium class with a 3-3-3 setup. Like other budget airlines, Norse Atlantic Airways will charge extra for seat selection, carry-on bags, and meals at the cheapest fares.

However, the fares still work out cheap for American and European travelers, especially if they pack light.

In addition to the NYC to London route, Norse Atlantic Airways will offer a limited-time service from August to late October between London Gatwick Airport and Oslo Airport, Gardermoen (OSL).

Final Thoughts

It’s excellent news for Americans and Europeans. The emergence of budget flights between the United Kingdom and the United States will boost travel numbers, increase affordability, and connect the two continents more.

It makes London and Europe an even better destination in August.
