Move Over Boise! Idaho’s ‘Niagara’ Is The State’s Most Underrated Fall Getaway

Believe it or not, Boise has become one of America’s trendiest cities in recent years, sending real estate soaring and airlines licking their chops, ready to anchor the airport.

Not much has changed — not even their famous blue football field.

One of the best times to visit Idaho is during the fall, a time when Boise is extra lively on weekends to root on their beloved Boise State Broncos, and when summer weekend getaway-ers head back to California (mostly).

But what those weekenders are missing out on is the rest of the state beyond Boise’s borderline ridiculous fry-to-burger ratio, small town feel, and lush greenery serving as a natural curtain this vibrant capital city.

When I visited Boise pre-pandemic, it was simply a gateway to what instantly became one of my favorite states to road trip, and the best stop along the way was Twin Falls, known as the “Niagara of the West”.

This under-hyped stunner was just featured by Matador Network as a must-visit fall getaway, and we at Travel Off Path give our stamp of approval as well.

Fly Or Drive: Just Get To Twin Falls!

Boasting small town charm and astounding nature in multiple forms, Twin Falls is as just as a must-visit as Boise, at least come fall.

The best part about it is that you can choose how to get there. Of course, there’s nothing more Americana than an old-fashioned road trip.

Well, as old-fashioned as Apple CarPlay and all the latest gizmos and gadgets allow it to be…

If you fly into Boise, you have no idea the scenic drive that’s in store once you leave the city limits.

While it’s been years since I’ve had the pleasure of visiting, I still have flashes in my mind’s eye back to the open winding roads traversing rolling farmland and meandering valleys before ultimately reaching Idaho’s most underrated destination, Twin Falls.

The amount of greenery blew my mind, but I visited in spring. Once we’re in the midst of autumn, the trip will surely become an even more magical drive.

But if you’re just not up for a 2-hour drive from Boise, Twin Falls does have an airport connecting to one major hub, Salt Lake City via Delta.

Upon arrival, no matter how you get here, you’ll be welcomed by a charismatic downtown district lined with indie coffee shops, breweries, and local boutiques.

It’s the perfect area to take a break from behind the wheel or squished flight before hitting up all the nearby natural attractions.

Astounding Nature Awaits

The place I remember most from my 48 hours in Twin Falls wasn’t any Niagara Falls dupe — it was the staggering Perrine Bridge standing nearly 500 feet high, framing the Snake River down below like a painting.

The views are simply unmatched, no matter which way you turn. This engineering marvel is a great starting point to Twin Falls, so you know this town ain’t messin’ around.

The same way people from all over the mainland make the Grand Canyon or Mt. Rushmore an end-cap to a road trip, Twin Falls is definitely worth a seat at the same table, and the magnificent view of the Snake River gorge is just the tip of the iceberg.

Minutes from downtown, Dierkes Lake is perhaps the town’s top hidden gem…for outsiders anyway. It’s tucked away from the “bustle” of town in a tranquil setting for kayaking or a scenic hike.

And to get your feet wet, so to speak, before heading to Twin Falls’ “Niagara”, check out a waterfall many visitors skip, Perrine Coulee Falls, shooting down more than 200 feet along the canyon walls of the Snake River.

Shoshone Falls: The “Niagara Of The West”

Buffalo may have been hyped as one of America’s biggest surprises this year, but now that we’re nearing the end of 2025, reports indicate that nearby Niagara hasn’t had a great turnout thus far.

While Shoshone Falls doesn’t hold nearly the same level of notoriety as Niagara, it does have a few things going for it for bragging rights:
- You don’t have to wear a goofy poncho to get up close
- You don’t have to fight off crowds
- It’s estimated to be 45 feet taller than Niagara Falls
Shoshone Falls cascaded 212 feet down and spreads roughly 900 feet wide. The spring blooms I witnessed only enhanced the already impressive natural wonder, but don’t sleep on wildflowers replaced by golden cottonwoods and autumn aspens.

The surrounding park is well-equipped with designated picnic areas with Snake River views, and there’s an overhang across the falls to snap photos or hang out and take it all in.

The entrance fee is only $5 per vehicle. Do know water flow is unpredictable, so some days in the fall are more photo-worthy than others.

6. Maine

The state with the 6^th highest number of hidden gems is Maine.

Tourists visit Maine for its outdoor activities and a whopping 90% of the state is covered in trees.

Maine also boasts 3,500 miles of coastline, which attracts rafters and water sport enthusiasts, and some of the most popular attractions in the state include the Acadia National Park as well as the Portland Museum of Art.

Some of the best-hidden gem attractions in the state include the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens and the Cape Neddick Nubble Lighthouse. Outdoor pursuits dominate here and it’s a perfect destination for outdoorsy types and adventure lovers.

5. Utah

Utah is the U.S. State with the 5th highest number of hidden gems. 219 of the 4,126 attractions in the State are considered hidden gems.

Some of the best hidden gem attractions in Utah include the Capitol Reef National Park or the Escalante Petrified Forest State Park.

Utah is best known for its incredible scenic views and wide range of beautiful National Parks. With its high desert mountains and plummeting canyons, you’re sure to fall in love with the hidden gems of this red rock state.

4. Hawaii

It’s impossible to believe that Hawaii boasts any hidden gems, considering the huge number of tourists that visit the State each year. But despite this there are plenty of lesser-known attractions to enjoy and explore here.

According to the report, there are 418 hidden gem attractions in Hawaii.

Of course, Hawaii is best known for its outstanding natural beauty and stunning beaches. Active volcanoes, tall peaks, an incredible array of wildlife and white sand beaches all attract travelers to Hawaii.

If you want to get off the beaten path then some of the state’s main hidden gem attractions include the Hoomaluhia Botanical Garden, Likeke falls, and the Hawaii Tropical Bioreserve and Garden.

3. Wyoming

Some of Wyoming’s most famous attractions include the famous Yellowstone National Park, the beautiful hot springs, and the diverse array of wildlife throughout the state.

But as well as these obvious attractions there are also a whopping 120 attractions in Wyoming that are considered to be hidden gems.

One of the best of these is the Devil’s Tower National Monument. This is a 870 foot stone monument that is the center of many native Indian religious ceremonies and offer spectacular views.

It’s worth noting that in June, climbing the tower is suspended due to the Native Americans holding their ceremonies, so you should avoid visiting then if possible.

2. Alaska

Alaska is a breathtaking destination with a well-deserved reputation for its natural beauty, wide-open spaces, mountains and glaciers.

The tallest mountain in North America is in Alaska in the heart of the State’s Denali National Park and Preserve. Alaska’s Glacier Bay National Park also attracts visitors from all over the world for its stunning fjords and glaciers.

But as well as these famous and obvious attractions, you’ll also find a huge number of lesser-known hidden gems in Alaska, which is the destination with the second-largest percentage of hidden gems in the U.S.

One of the best-hidden gems in Alaska is the Alaska Native Heritage Center. This is a great place to learn more about Alaskan native culture and features a life-sized village where you can experience dancing, crafts, and storytelling.

1. Colorado

Colorado is officially the U.S. state with the highest number of hidden gems. According to recent research a whopping 10.51% of attractions in the state are classified as hidden gems.

There are many wonderful attractions for both national and international visitors, and 996 of them are considered to be hidden gems. One of the best of these is the Garden Of The Gods.

This is a huge park located in Colorado Springs and boasts some of the best rock climbing and hiking routes in the state.

If you’re looking for something a little more mainstream, then the blend of cities, mountains, and valleys makes Colorado well worth visiting, some of its biggest attractions include the Rocky Mountains National Park and the Denver Botanic Garden.

These Are The Top 5 Safest States To Visit In Mexico This Fall

Mexico has historically been one of the most sought-after destinations for U.S. travelers, breaking tourism records time and time again.

However, some states in the country still raise concerns in terms of safety, giving potential travelers pause before they even get a chance to book their trip.

So, if you’re planning on taking a trip south of the border this fall, it’s important to do your due diligence and ensure that your destination of choice is safe and welcoming to tourists.

To help you with that decision, Crimen en Mexico, a website dedicated to crime statistics in Mexico, has compiled a list of the safest (and most dangerous) states in the country.

These are the destinations that came out in the top 5:

5. Aguascalientes

Covering a modest 2168.35 mi² (5,616 km²), Aguascalientes is a lesser-known landlocked state that boasts some of the country’s best vineyards and hot springs.

While not your typical beach hotspot, tourists still come to the area to enjoy the San Marcos Garden, the Ojo Caliente Thermal Springs, and La Isla San Marcos (an entertainment complex located on the island in the middle of the San Marcos Lake).

Aside from its natural and cultural attractions, Aguascalientes is also known for its quiet, relaxing atmosphere – in part due to the low violence rate (6.9 per 100,000 people) in the state.

4. Durango

Though not so much at the forefront of mainstream tourism as some of the following destinations on the list, Durango is the backdrop of Mexico’s most naturally blessed landscapes.

The state is even nicknamed “The Land of Films” since many Hollywood projects have taken place in its diverse terrains.

Cinema buffs will be happy to learn that “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly” (starring Clint Eastwood) and “The Revenant” (starring Leonardo Di Caprio) both feature scenes that have been shot right in Durango.

Moreover, the state’s capital, Victoria de Durango, has a well-known historic center with many well-preserved baroque buildings.

However, Durango’s biggest selling point right now is its low violence rate of 6.8 (per 100,000 people).

3. Baja California Sur

Home to some famed cities such as Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo, Beja California Sur is renowned for its laid-back atmosphere and world-class beaches.

The entire Baja California peninsula has recently gained international recognition for its stunning scenery, crystal-clear waters, and the unparalleled level of safety it provides its visitors.

With a violence rate of 4.6, Baja California Sur comfortably holds the no. 3 spot in the “Safest States In Mexico” ranking.

If you’re looking to steer clear of resort towns this fall but still want to catch a glimpse of the region’s stunning beaches, you can always book a trip to La Paz.

The state’s capital is famous for its seafront Malecón promenade, gorgeous parks, and vibrant art scene, welcoming tourists from all walks of life.

2. Coahuila

The landlocked state located in northeastern Mexico is often treated as an afterthought by tourists who are eager to experience the country’s world-class beaches.

However, what the city lacks in coastal allure, it more than makes up for in history, culture, and, as it turns out, safety too.

Coahuila boasts an impressively low violence rate of 4.3, so if you want to see another side of Mexico this fall, I suggest adding it to your travel bucket list.

The state is home to some of Mexico’s biggest, most influential cities, including Saltillo (the capital), Acuña, Monclova, and Piedras Negras.

1. Yucatán

Luckily for tourists looking forward to visiting some of Mexico’s most gorgeous attractions, Yucatán, home to dozens of breathtaking beaches, was deemed remarkably safe.

Though the region did record 44 homicides from August 2022 to July 2023, it still boasts a record-low violence rate of 1.9.

In comparison, the country’s most dangerous state, Colima, recorded 873 homicides in the same timeframe and has a violence rate of 107.1.

If you’re ever in the region, you won’t want to miss out on the capital, Mérida. Known for its vibrant nightlife and rich Mayan heritage, the city has welcomed over 888,000 visitors during the first eight months of 2023 alone.

Chichén Itzá, one of Mexico’s most famous historical attractions, is also located within the state, despite tourists often assuming that the landmark is located in Quintana Roo due to the geographical proximity between the two.

The ancient Mayan city that covers 4 square miles (10 square km) is a sight to behold, so make sure to add it to your itinerary.

The team behind this study took the following factors into consideration:
- The number of landmarks and national parks related to a specific state
- How many hiking trails are in the area
- The number of campgrounds and RV parks related to the population
- The breadth of animal and plant species
- The number of deaths per 10 millions national park visits
- How many deaths were caused by harmful plant or animal encounters

These factors tend to make a camping trip more successful. Each one is given a score from 1-10 and calculated into an overall ranking of a Camping Index Score that goes up to 100.

These are the Top 5 Best States For A Camping Trip This Summer:

Vermont – Camping Index Score – 61.23

The Green Mountain State came in as the #5 state for a camping getaway. This scenic state scored 61.23 out of 100.

The reason behind the score was mostly due to Vermont’s great outdoor features, as they have the second-highest amount of trails at just over 400.

They also came in seventh for the number of RV parks and tenth in the number of campgrounds at 24 of them.

Idaho – Camping Index Score – 63.62

The Gem State ranks #4 on the list of best camping trips in the United States. With a score of 63.62 out of 100, this gorgeous state in the Pacific Northwest has a lot to offer nature lovers.

Idaho offers the fourth-highest amount of free campgrounds totaling 17 of them, along with the ninth-highest amount of trails in accordance with their population.

There is also a much higher chance of enjoying beautiful weather as the level of rainfall tends to be very low each year.

New Mexico – Camping Index Score – 65.94

The Land of Enchantment ranks in the top 3 best states for campers. With a score of just under 66 out of 100, New Mexico is a highly underrated place to sleep under the stars.

For every 100,000 inhabitants, New Mexico had the third highest amount of free campgrounds, which is 18 in total. They also have very few deaths at their national parks.

This wonderful state is also home to the seventh-highest amount of campsites and came in fifteenth in the number of trails to hike, totaling just over 100 of them.

Animal and plant lovers will also be fascinated with this state since there are over 4,500 varying species.

Montana – Camping Index Score – 69.29

The Treasure State comes in ranked #2 as the best state to go camping. In relation to their population numbers, Montana has the highest amount of trails totaling well over 400 of them.

Finding a place to camp is seemingly endless, with 90 paid sites to stop at. T

here are also many free campgrounds to choose from and the second-highest amount of RV parks.

Getting where travelers need to go shouldn’t be an issue either, as Montana has some of the lowest fuel costs in the nation.

Wyoming – Camping Index Score – 72.12

The Equality State is the top state for camping trips in the U.S. Many factors make Wyoming the best in the nation.

They are home to the highest amount of RV parks (both paid and free). In addition, Wyoming offers well over 300 spectacular hiking trails per 100,000 inhabitants.

With a total population under 600,000 for the entire state, visitors will love the vast openness anywhere they go. Very affordable gas prices will make the adventure even easier.

The list was created by using a 50/50 mix of both user scores and editorial staff scores, a wide range of criteria was considered before each destination found its spot on the list. Here’s a look at the destinations in the U.S. that made the top 10.

10. New York City

Not only a top destination in the U.S. but a major attraction the world over, New York City has long since been the poster child for a modern-day metropolis. Home to some of the world’s best eateries, museums, galleries, and events, New York City offers travelers a wealth of attractions that they’re unlikely to exhaust, even in several trips to the city.

If the skyscrapers and busy streets get a bit too much, travelers can retreat to Central Park, one of the most famous parks in the country and a true New York Landmark. Uber and Lyft Remove Mask Mandate In The United States and Canada

Face coverings are now optional and drivers and passengers will decide whether or not they would like to ride without masks

The American ride-share companies Uber and Lyft announced the removal of the mask mandate for drivers and passengers this Tuesday. The decision has been taken after a federal judge ruled against the extension of the mandate enacted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Right after Biden’s administration recognized the federal judge’s decision, Uber and Lyft joined other US airlines that decided to drop the mask mandate.

According to the official information shared on Uber’s website, face coverings are now optional: “As of April 19, 2022, riders and drivers are not required to wear masks when using Uber.” However, the company also clarified: “The CDC still recommends wearing a mask if you have certain personal risk factors and/or high transmission levels in your area.”

Uber also encourages those who want to wear masks to do it, but also respects the decision of those who don’t. They also reminded drivers and travelers: “If you ever feel uncomfortable, you can always cancel the trip.”

Lyft shared a similar statement according to the information published on CNBC: “We know that everyone has different comfort levels, and anyone who wants to continue wearing a mask is encouraged to do so. As always, drivers or riders can decline to accept or cancel any ride they don’t wish to take.”

The automobile service company also explained on its website that not wearing face-covering will no longer be a reason to report a user or driver: “Wearing a mask during rides is now optional for everyone in the car. Health safety reasons, like not wearing a mask, will no longer appear as a cancellation option. And your riders won’t be able to report you for those reasons.” Uber, on the other hand, is still asking drivers to confirm if they are wearing face coverings.

The two tech companies had been requiring drivers and passengers to wear masks since the beginning of the pandemic. The news had a big impact across the United States, and people will have to go through an adjustment process while they adapt to the new measures.

Customer’s Reaction

Mixed reactions have emerged across social media channels and different websites. Some customers in favor of the mask mandate removal have expressed relief and happiness with emojis and expressions like “Let’s go!” and “Finally”. Other users aren’t happy.

Frederick Joseph, an author and worried Uber user, wrote a message to the company on Twitter: “Please add functionality to request drivers who are wearing masks. As a person who is immunocompromised, and constantly in a rush, it’s inefficient at best to continually cancel Ubers until a driver shows up willing to wear a mask.”

Many users are worried about their safety and the functionality of the app. A few drivers have said on social media that they will no longer work for Uber or Lyft because they find the new measure unsafe or irresponsible. Uber has recommended users who prefer to wear masks message the driver or passenger, prior to pick-up, to make sure they are willing to wear face coverings.

A few customers are already complaining on social media about the different opinions regarding the optional mask rule. Yellow Cabs in New York City will still require passengers and drivers to wear masks, despite Lyft and Uber’s recent change of policy; however, it seems that more companies are joining the optional mask decision.

Uber Canada Joins

Now, Uber Canada has also announced dropping the mask mandate, it will only remain mandatory in Quebec, starting on April 22. A spokesperson shared the information with the Canadian news outlet CTVNews and also explained: “As per Health Canada’s advice, we still strongly recommend wearing a mask depending on personal risk factors and infection rates in your area.”

Although Canada still has their mask mandate in place for airports, trains, and airplanes, Uber riders now have the option to mask or not.
