Those looking to experience that authentic Italian alpine culture will love exploring the 16.9 miles (27.2 km) of slopes available during peak season, while the cozy mountain villages, delectable cuisine, and warm hospitality will just be icing on the snow-covered cake.

The recently built gondola lift will take you right above the tree line, from where you’ll be able to appreciate the surrounding landscape and state-of-the-art slopes that much more.

4. Carezza, Italy

While in Italy, you’ll want to add a stop to Carezza, a resort known for its mesmerizing views of the Dolomites and the iconic Catinaccio-Rosengarten mountain range, making this the perfect choice for those in search of some of Europe’s best wintery landscapes.

The well-groomed slopes come in a wide array of difficulty levels, some of which are challenging enough even for the most experienced.

Those trying to look past the typical European ski resorts this winter will love Kiroro, famous for its gorgeous and, more importantly, consistently snowy 300-mile-long (483 km) slopes.

Taking the coveted top spot on today’s list is the stunning Les Portes du Soleil, a sprawling ski area straddling the French-Swiss border.

There’s really nothing not to love about this place.

Renowned for its expansive terrain, charming alpine villages, and unparalleled views of Mont Blanc, Les Portes du Soleil offers what can only be described as the quintessential alpine experience.

The area’s vast interconnected ski network spans 12 resorts, including Avoriaz, Morzine, and Champery, just to name a few.

Portugal, home to some of the world’s most stunning cities, historic landmarks, and gold-sanded beaches, has recently skyrocketed in popularity among American travelers.

Though there’s no shortage of reasons to visit a country as naturally and culturally blessed as Portugal, it’s important to note that what’s drawing tourists in such remarkable numbers is the fact that the region boasts some of the lowest prices in southwestern Europe.

In an effort to help travelers keep costs at a minimum during their next trip to Portugal, Porto Travel Guide analyzed online data for over 100 Portuguese cities, searching for the most cost-effective destinations.

They looked into travel, accommodation, and food costs and scored each destination out of 100 based on their affordability index.

These were the cities that were deemed the cheapest in all of Portugal:

1. Fafe

Boasting an impressive affordability score of 87.90 out of 100, Fafe is officially Portugal’s cheapest city, and a beautiful one at that.

This hidden gem is nestled in the vibrant landscapes of northern Portugal, offering travelers a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of Lisbon.

While relatively unknown, the city is home to several of the country’s must-see attractions, including Pedra do Altar, the Peneda-Gerês National Park, which is a haven for hikers and backpackers looking to explore Portugal’s wild beauty on a budget.

2. Oliveira de Azeméis

The central Portuguese city is probably best recognized for being home to the Oliveira de Azeméis Museum, a treasure trove of artifacts, art pieces, and historical exhibits, all of which provide visitors with fascinating insights into the region’s storied past.

If Fafe is a city best appreciated by nature enthusiasts, Oliveira de Azeméis is a haven for history buffs looking to get a deeper understanding of Portugal’s culture.

Here, you can also partake in traditional festivals and events, though my top recommendation would be to visit the local markets – aside from the lively atmosphere, you’re bound to find some great deals.

3. Vila Nova de Famalicão

The third destination on today’s list is yet another hotspot for history enthusiasts.

Vila Nova de Famalicão boasts a fantastic historical center adorned with medieval architecture, narrow cobblestone streets, and elegant churches, making visitors feel like they’re on the set of a movie.

What’s more, exploring the city by foot is not only possible but also the best way to soak in the local ambiance, so you’ll end up saving even more on bus and taxi fares.

4. Ovar

Located along the picturesque coastline of central Portugal, Ovar is a seaside town that features some of the country’s most pristine sandy beaches, including Praia do Furadouro and Praia de Esmoriz, where travelers can enjoy the Portuguese Riviera without any entrance fees.

Beyond its inviting shores, Ovar is famous for its colorful azulejo tiles that adorn the facades of buildings all throughout the city.

To add to that, accommodation options start at only $14 a night – it really can’t get any better than this.

5. Amarante

The fifth cheapest destination in Portugal is Amarante, a picturesque town that lies along the banks of the Tâmega River.

Though small, the city is pretty well known among locals for its charming medieval bridge, Ponte de São Gonçalo, which offers awe-inspiring views of the river and the surrounding landscape.

Amarante is also a gateway to Douro Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its terraced vineyards and scenic landscapes, so you won’t have to worry about getting bored in this gorgeous region of northern Portugal.

Bigger Portuguese Hotspots Tourists Can Visit On A Budget

While there’s no doubt that all of the destinations that made the list are as spectacular as they are affordable, they might be a bit too off-the-beaten-path for travelers looking to experience more popular cities and landmarks.

If that sounds like you, you can find some bigger, more popular hotspots you can still visit on a budget below.
- Porto. Based on data from this study as well as articles and reports from reliable travel sources, it’s safe to say that Porto is the Portuguese city that best combines affordable pricing and lively tourist attractions. The area’s diverse range of budget-friendly hotels and eateries creates the perfect budget backdrop without forsaking cultural and historical attractions.
- Vila Nova de Gaia. A stunning, albeit smaller alternative to neighboring Porto, Vila Nova de Gaia is the perfect destination for that specific traveler looking for a more unique destination while still getting to partake in traditional touristy experiences.
- Lisbon. Though Lisbon was placed relatively far down on the list, holding the 85th spot, the fact that the country’s capital has left almost 20 cities behind in terms of affordability speaks a lot about the value the gorgeous city offers its visitors. Though you’ll need to spend a bit more here than you would in Porto or Vila Nova de Gaia, the sights, events, and attractions you’ll get to experience in return are invaluable.

With accommodation costs starting at $33 a night, it comes as no surprise that so many tourists are choosing to spend their holidays basking under the Portuguese sun.

And, when it comes to a place that provides its visitors with so much to see and do, such prices offer unbeatable value.

This study found that the top 7 destinations for digital nomads right now are:

Bangkok

Bangkok took the number 1 spot far ahead of the other cities. The main attractions of Bangkok for digital nomads are its affordability and fast internet speed.

Bangkok doesn’t come top of the list for any of the rankings, but it receives unilaterally high scores across the board.

The average cost of a hotel room in Bangkok is just $51 per night, and other expenses are equally low. You can expect to pay just $3 per meal and 86 cents for a journey on the public transport system.

Shanghai

Shanghai took the second spot on the list thanks to its vibrant culture and cuisine and abundance of coworking spaces.

Shanghai is an international hub for business, finance, and research which makes it incredibly attractive to some digital nomads.

With the average price of a hotel room in Hanoi sitting at just $41 per night, this is the city with the cheapest accommodation on the list. You will also pay just $2 for a meal and 30 cents for a public transport journey.

This makes Hanoi the most affordable city for digital nomads, with estimated monthly living costs of just under $1,700.

Hanoi is working hard to attract digital nomads right now and is setting itself up to compete with other digital hubs in Southeast Asia, such as Bangkok and Singapore.

Tokyo

Tokyo tops the charts as the digital nomad hub with the most things to do. That is not surprising given the huge size of the city. There are more than 12,600 attractions to enjoy in Tokyo.

Accommodation here is expensive. You can expect to pay an average of $183 per night, which is cheaper only than Dubai on the list of digital nomad destinations.

While there isn’t currently a dedicated digital nomad visa available in Japan, the Japanese government is considering implementing one.

Krakow

Krakow is considered the second-best city in Europe for digital nomads. Accommodation here is slightly more expensive than in Bucharest, but meals are slightly cheaper.

That makes Krakow an affordable hub where digital nomads can live on a relatively low income. Internet speeds are mid-range as standard, but there are plenty of hubs available if you want to work collaboratively or need access to faster internet.

Calgary

Calgary is the city with the fastest average internet speed of all the cities analyzed. Digital nomads can enjoy internet speeds of 322 MB/s here.

Calgary might not be the most affordable city on this list but is ranked as one of the most livable cities in the world, and it is also safe with excellent social opportunities.

The top 5 cities all happen to be in Europe. Copenhagen comes in ranked at #5, mostly due to its lack of public internet access.

Surprisingly, the beautiful Denmark capital shares the same score as off-path places such as Accra, Ghana and Johannesburg, South Africa in terms of wi-fi scarcity.

4- Lisbon, Portugal – Score of 7.58

Ranking #4 is the picturesque city of Lisbon in the wondrous country of Portugal. Having some of the best spas for the ultimate relaxing getaway is a major factor in this high ranking.

Lisbon also has a lot to offer to keep tourists busy, sharing similar scores with more popular cities such as London and Barcelona.

3- Amsterdam, Netherlands – Score of 7.60

Random cleaning fees, pet fees, high deposits, service charges, and more have sent frustrated travelers into a frenzy!

Hotels have made a big comeback after the COVID-19 pandemic, while Airbnb continues to charge high fees and has had some unfortunate incidents in recent headlines.

Travelers have a dilemma on their hands when trying to choose between a more spacious stay at an Airbnb or a more traditional stay at a hotel.

What Is Included In New Study

It’s not surprising since Airbnb users are expected to encounter an average of 36% in various fees this summer.

For example, if guests were to pick a comfortable home to stay at for roughly $180 per night, the added fees would potentially make the new cost almost $250 per night.

These numbers are found in a recent study by Forbes to determine the highest fees for each market this summer.

The study was performed by searching over 30,000 listings in 100 of the most sought-after Airbnb destinations ranging from major cities, such as Houston and Chicago, to smaller markets, such as Montauk and Kissimmee.

The following are the top 5 cities for the highest AirBnB fees:

Number 5 – Memphis, Tennessee

Memphis is a fun city to explore and waste the night away on the famous Beale Street.

Known for Hall-of-Fame musical talents, such as B.B. King and Elvis Presley, who began their careers in this marvelous city, music lovers will have the time of their lives.

It’s also a haven for BBQ enthusiasts, with many mouthwatering restaurants across the city.

While visitors will have a blast here, it may not be so fun to check the bill of your Airbnb.

The blues capitol of Tennessee comes in ranked at Number 5 due to its very high costs.

At a nightly rate averaging $215, the fees average 45% spread across various cleaning fees, service fees, and taxes.

Number 4 – Davenport, Florida

While many may not recognize this town, it is located in close proximity to the more popular city of Orlando.

About a 40-minute drive from the city, guests who would stay here would still be able to explore beaches and Walt Disney World in an easy day trip.

Those considering staying in this area might want to reconsider, as Davenport comes in ranked at Number 4.

At a nightly rate of $166, the fees are very expensive, also averaging 45% spread across various fees and taxes.

Number 3 – Fort Myers, Florida

Famous for beautiful beaches, fishing trips, and shopping options, Fort Myers is a popular destination for Airbnb-ers.

Unfortunately, this market is the highest in fees for the state of Florida. Beachgoers will need to keep a close eye on their bill when booking here.

Fort Myers ranks Number 3 due to its slightly higher costs than its other Florida counterpart, Davenport.

The average nightly rate is $248, with the average fees coming out to 46% when including a variety of fees and taxes.

Number 2 – Phoenix, Arizona

The capital of the beautiful desert state of Arizona is known for its warm weather, pristine golf courses, and trendy suburbs. This city is a very popular place for Airbnbs.

Although, those coming to Phoenix and the surrounding areas may experience shocking costs when looking beyond the average nightly rate of $202.

Phoenix ranks Number 2 on the list, with total fees averaging 47%. Cleaning fees alone come in at a very high 20% compared to other cities remaining in the teens.

Nearby Scottsdale, where many guests choose to stay when visiting the Valley of The Sun, also ranks Number 7 with very similar results to bigger Phoenix.

Number 1 – Atlanta, Georgia

The city of Atlanta is the largest city in Georgia, as well as being the Capital. A city with deep ties to its Southern roots, this area has a diverse music scene and an underrated food hub for foodie travelers.

The Atlanta airport is one of the busiest in the nation, which means many travelers opt to stay here even when passing through.

Those looking to stay at an Airbnb may find fees larger than a Georgia peach!

Atlanta ranks Number 1 in the country. Airbnbs in Atlanta have an average nightly rate of $192.

The fees are the highest in the country, with the average total of fees at 47%
