Not only was 2023 a record year for tourism in the country, but Greece has started 2024 with a bang, too.

Historically, January is the slowest month for tourism in Greece, but this year, they have experienced the best January ever. 737.3 thousand overseas visitors arrived in the country in one month alone.

What’s more a huge number of those travelers were from the U.S.

Travelers to Greece from the United States in January increased by a whopping 260.2% year on year according to the Bank of Greece.

American travelers are also spending more in Greece than ever before, with expenditure up by 63.6%.

So why is Greece seeing such a huge surge in American travelers?

Easy To Reach

This year, there are more non-stop flights from the U.S. to Greece than ever.

Delta and American Airlines are offering non-stop flights from New York JFK.

If your starting point is Boston then you can take a daily flight with Delta. This is the fastest possible non-stop route between Greece and the U.S.

You can fly between Chicago or Philadelphia and Greece with American Airlines.

United Airlines offers a non-stop route from Washington. And if you want to head out from Atlanta then Delta is the airline for you.

All of these flights have Athens as their arrival city, which is a great place to start your Greek adventures. And from there it’s easy to reach almost any of the most beautiful Greek islands by jumping on a short flight or taking a passenger ferry.

A huge number of Greek island cruises from Athens depart from the port of Piraeus in the city too, so this is a great place to start if you want to hop from island to island and see as much as possible in your trip.

It’s also worth noting that U.S. travelers don’t need a visa to travel to Greece, which makes visiting the country even more straightforward.

A Rich Cultural Heritage

Cultural and historical destinations are always popular with American travelers. Greek is said to be the first and, therefore, oldest civilization in Europe.

Many important ancient attractions in the country are remarkably well-preserved thanks to its dry, Mediterranean climate, which means there is an abundance of things to see and do for culture vultures.

If you’re planning to island hop then you should schedule a couple of days in Athens first, as this is where you’ll find some of the most well-known and well-preserved cultural highlights of the country.

This includes the Acropolis and the Parthenon, a citadel which sits on a hilltop above the city. It’s worth noting that this is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Greece and visitors have been limited to 20,000 a day to tackle overtourism.

Petty crime can happen anywhere, and there are reports of sketchy San Andres streets after a night of bar-hopping, but nowhere near the frequent occurrences that are often reported in the likes of Medellin, Bogota, and Cali.

The phrase ‘No Dar Papaya’ commonly used by locals is good to know anywhere in the country, which essentially means don’t give a reason to be sought out by criminals.

This idyllic vacation spot won’t have your head on a swivel wondering who is behind you; you can experience a blissful vacation in one of the most underrated beach destinations in Latin America.

World Class All-Inclusive Resorts

Mexico and other popular Caribbean getaways are not the only options for lavish all-inclusive stays. Plus, doesn’t vacationing on an island make the trip all the more alluring?

Here in San Andres, vacationers have at least 10 resorts to choose from for all-inclusive waterfront accommodations.

Many luxury hotels are packed in to the scenic northeastern tip of this small island near the cruise port.

Although, travelers can opt for more secluded stays wrapped around the stunning coastline from north to south.

Visiting an island paradise wouldn’t feel right without planning some much-needed beach days. While some resorts overlook the eye-popping blue waters, seeking out beaches away from resorts may be the best way to go.

Playa San Luis is set away from busy bars and high-end resorts with sprawling white sand, coral reefs and colorful traditional homes dotted along the scenic coast.

Further south is Playa Charquitos perfect for a relaxing day with less crowds and coconut stands to immerse yourself into island life living.

But perhaps the best of all is Johnny Cay – a tiny blip on the map just north of San Andres. Easily reached by boat, this tiny island lined with calm blue waters, white sand, palm trees, fresh made-to-order seafood and live reggae performances is the pinnacle of an island escape.

Multiple resorts and tour operators offer a plethora of water activities, including the unique ‘Walking Under The Sea Experience’ taking you to the seafloor for 25 minutes of aquatic wildlife viewing.

Best Ways To Reach San Andres

Americans will have to factor in at least one air connection unless arriving by cruise, which are limited in their own right.

The good news is travelers can connect from popular Latin America hubs without adding significant time to your travels.

But, make sure to grab a window seat to witness the Sea of Seven Colors before landing – a variety of colorful ocean hues attributed to the coral reefs in the region.

Europe is home to some of the most stunning destinations on the planet.

While Europe certainly holds no monopoly on immaculate island getaways, the options are plentiful, especially when it comes to Spain.

For 2023, it was one of the most visited of the Balearic islands, as flights are plentiful for those seeking a mix of blissful beach escapes and world-famous nightlife.

That’s where Ibiza becomes dicey, however. This island knows how to party their pants off, so if that’s not your vibe then perhaps one of the other 3 islands will be more your jam.

Although, a sunset cruise makes for a nice escape from the fist-pumping crowds.

Formentera

The smallest of the Balearic islands, this chill paradise is on the opposite end of the spectrum compared to Ibiza’s typical tourist.

Formentera is the type of vacation spot to relax and unwind, surrounded by incredible scenery, especially the beaches.

Vacationers have rave reviews all around the coast for the long stretches of pristine beaches with ample activities at hand, such as snorkeling and private boat rentals.

Some travelers make a day trip out of Formentara, but others love to spend more time in vacation mode as the unspoiled, tranquil island lies somewhere between “hidden gem” and “locals’ favorite” status.

The nightlife isn’t quite comparable to Ibiza, but some prefer the low-key atmosphere with more elbow room than the packed bars of the neighboring island just 30 minutes away.

Menorca

Less flashy and less trashy, Menorca is the perfect escape to go more off-path and avoid the chaos of other popular destinations.

Menorca is more than just a day trip, although it can be reached in just an hour by air from major hubs like Barcelona.

That is unless you desire to take the adventurous route with at least a 5-hour ferry ride. No matter how you get here, you’ll just be happy you chose Menorca as your go-to vacation spot.

This Spanish beauty is far less party-centric than Ibiza and much larger than Formentera, yet just as stunning and worthy of a visit.

The white sand beaches are postcard-worthy, and it’s relatively easy to find secluded beaches away from fellow tourists, especially in spring.

Summer may be another story. Your trip will be even better by leveling up at an incredible 5-star resort, such as the Lagos Resort Menorca at very affordable rates or the divine Faustino Gran Relais & Chateaux.

Mallorca

This grand island between Menorca and Ibiza is perhaps the biggest playground for vacationers who love a mix of nature, delicious eats and cultural cities.

Mallorca checks off all 3 boxes and just so happens to be one of the easiest islands to reach. Commonly overshadowed by mainland Spain’s iconic cities, this beautiful island is anchored by the highly underrated city of Palma.

Well worth a trip on its own just to bear witness to the Catedral de Mallorca – also simply known as La Seu.

Just because Mexico’s tourism peaks around New Year’s, it doesn’t mean that travelers aren’t longing for the country’s dreamy beaches even now that temperatures have started to rise.

In fact, recent reports show that Riviera Maya, one of the most sought-after regions in the entire country, is currently experiencing an unprecedented influx of visitors, with hotel occupancy rates nearing the 100% mark.

As we speak, 85% of rooms available throughout Riviera Maya are booked for these upcoming months, and the number is just bound to get higher as time goes on.

These stats lead us to believe that, slowly but surely, the gorgeous region that stretches from Puerto Morelos to Punta Allen is catching up with its northern neighbor, Cancun.

Here’s why:

It’s Never Been Easier To Visit Riviera Maya

For the busy modern traveler, convenience is of the essence, and there’s nothing more off-putting than having to hop from one plane to another just to get to your destination of choice, wasting a lot of time and money in the process.

It’s worth noting that there are two new major infrastructure investments that have changed how people get in, out, and around Riviera Maya – Tulum’s new airport and the famous Maya Train.

So if you’ve had a bad experience trying to find flights or public transport in the past, I highly recommend re-evaluating your options since a lot has changed these past few months.

Those Who Want To Score A Good Deal Need To Hurry

The fact that travel to Riviera Maya has never been so convenient still doesn’t explain why hotels are being booked months in advance, so why are people rushing so much?

There are two main reasons why those looking to spend their spring in the Mexican Caribbean need to book their tickets like yesterday.

First of all, the newly launched Tulum Airport and Maya Train do have something to do with the situation – now that visiting the region has become easier than ever, more people are flocking to the hotspots of Riviera Maya, which, in turn, means that those looking to find the perfect place to stay need to get ahead of millions of other travelers.

Secondly, it’s a well-known fact that sorting out the logistics of an upcoming trip (think travel and accommodation) a couple of months in advance can end up saving you hundreds of dollars, again, because you’re moving ahead of the general demand and hotels have yet to hike up their prices.

What’s more, Skyscanner shows that March through May is the cheapest time to fly to Tulum, one of the region’s most popular destinations, so those planning to get the most bang for their buck need to act quickly.

At the core of Riviera Maya’s ever-lasting allure lies the fact that the region caters to virtually every type of traveler.

As usual, Mexico is on every American’s radar now that winter’s finally in full swing: irrespective of season, the sun is always shining brighter South of the border, and the vibrant culture, coupled with those serene ocean vistas, is just too hard to resist.

A stunning beach town in the Mexican Caribbean, boasting not only great weather and pristine beaches but a lively social scene, Playa Del Carmen is trending with U.S. vacationers right now, having nabbed a spot on Tripadvisor‘s Best of the Best awards last year.

Fast forward to 2024, and Playa is close to selling out this season, and we suspect this may be why:

A World-Class Resort Town

Playa Del Carmen straddles the Caribbean Sea, easily the top recreational zone for Americans in the colder months, and though that in itself is a huge draw for some, it’s not the only factor behind the laid-back town’s popularity boom lately.

It has a long-standing reputation for being a world-class resort destination and one of the top three best in the Mayan Coast alongside Cancun and Tulum, with its extensive list of luxurious all-inclusives and state-of-the-art tourist facilities.

Recently, the landmark Palmaïa, the House of AïA, a top-notch concept hotel a short 5-km drive from the center, featured on MICHELIN Guide‘s top twelve most popular resorts worldwide, bringing further attention to Playa.

As you may be aware, the guide rates only the most prestigious and highly-reputed hotels and restaurants, and Palmaïa’s inclusion on the list is proof Playa Del Carmen stands among the greatest beach destinations in the wider Caribbean.

Palmaïa is the obvious highlight here, but the hospitality sector in Playa as a whole delivers an impeccable service, with well-trained staff ready to cater to a guest’s every need, gourmet restaurants led by chefs who are Michelin-approved themselves, and impressive amenities.

We’re talking winding, lagoon-style pools, the recluse, private stretch of beach each oceanfront resort lays claim to, and the comfort awaiting visitors irrespective of accommodation type: essentially, it is everything newcomers to the Mexican Caribbean expect it to be.

Perfect For Both Relaxing And Soaking Up Some Culture

We know there’s nothing Americans love more about a sunny getaway than kicking it back, pampering themselves by the poolside, and basking in the sun without a care in the world, and casual Playa Del Carmen is perfect for doing just that.

However, if you’re looking to add a bit of action to your idle-filled resort stay, there is plenty to do and see in, and around Playa Del Carmen, thanks to its strategic location on the Mayan Coast, within short driving distance of beautiful natural and historical sites.

Xcaret is a popular day trip for guests based in the area, costing $120 to enter. It may be on the pricier end, but it’s one of a handful of places in Mexico where cenotes, jungle trails, Mayan ruins, and a theme park can be found all within one eco park.

Sailing trips to neighboring destinations like Tulum and Akumal, two sun-drenched, rapidly-developing beach zones, and cultural excursions to archaeological zones like Chichén Itzá, the number one historical attraction in all of Mexico, make up the bulk of all available tours.

Playa Del Carmen Is Incredibly Safe For Tourists

Playa Del Carmen is also home to a vibrant social scene, competing for the title of nightlife hotspot with Tulum and Puerto Morelos.

Those venturing out of their resort complex will, at some point, end up in Quinta Avenida, where all of the trendiest restaurants and nightclubs are.

Playa remains safe by Mexico standards, with most issues encountered by visitors relating to inattentiveness on foreigners’ part and petty crime, most notably pickpocketing.

It can get a tad crowded at times, particularly over the peak season, which is why Americans should not let their guards down when strolling down the busy downtown area, particularly at night.

As is the case with any hugely popular tourist destination, leaving valuables in the hotel safe, sticking to well-lit pedestrianized zones, and avoiding deserted streets greatly reduces the risks of brushing shoulders with ill-intentioned individuals.

That being said, crime remains largely under control, as Playa Del Carmen, along with all its Quintana Roo competitors, is a Level 2 destination, as defined by U.S. authorities. This means reconsidering travel is not necessary.

As local news outlets have described it, Playa Del Carmen is a ‘hippier, more modern version of the fishing village it used to be‘.

It is at the center of the Mexican Caribbean’s hottest resort strip, exactly a one-hour drive from two of the busiest international airports in the zone, namely Cancun International and Tulum’s newly-opened Felipe Carrillo Puerto Airport, not to mention it’s now a stop on the Maya Train route.

Competition may be tough, but there is no doubt the award-winning resorts, proximity to Mayan cultural centers, improved connectivity via flights and rail, and safety will only serve to increase Playa’s attractiveness in 2024.

Why This Stunning European Resort City Is Becoming A Year-Round Destination

For many Americans, going across the pond is a summertime thing, as it is when Europe is at its most vibrant, beaches feel livelier, and seas are warm for swimming, but what if we told you not all parts of the continent are plunged into darkness and freezing temperatures over winter?

In fact, this lesser-known resort city in Spain is notoriously known for having pretty mild winters, with average temperatures of 63°F during the day and an average of 8 hours of sun per day most days, even in January, the coldest month.

Looking at the weather forecast, it’s no surprise Valencia stays popular with tourists well into the off-season, but that’s not the only reason why it’s essentially become, at this point, a year-round destination:

Valencia Is Spain’s Next Tourism Hotspot

Valencia is Spain’s third largest city, as well as one of the most populated anywhere in the Mediterranean, with as many as 1.6 million people residing in the wider metropolitan area.

It’s become a permanent feature on summer trip itineraries due to its privileged coastal location, with easy access to beaches and stunning natural parks, and an impressive concentration of tourist attractions, ranking up there with Madrid and Barcelona as a Spanish tourism hotspot.

A little introduction if we may: Valencia was founded as a Roman colony, and over the years, it has been ruled by several different empires, including a North African-Muslim caliphate, until Spain came into being.

This makes it a melting pot, with its many different influences evident in its urban layout.

It still follows Roman city planning, lying on a fertile ground where the Turia River and the Mediterranean meet, yet its architectural heritage is anything but harmonious, combining European and Moorish (North African) styles, and of course, modern developments.

What To See Around Valencia

A symbol of Valencia, the futuristic City of Arts and Sciences is popular among museumgoers, as it encompasses a planetarium, a science museum, an aquarium, an innovative opera house, and immersive art exhibits.

At the same time, the city boasts a vast collection of far older monuments, some of which have been added to UNESCO’s ever-expanding list of World Heritage Sites, including Lonja de la Seda, a late-medieval secular building with a majestic Hall of Columns.

Walking around central Valencia, tourists will be stepping on centuries upon centuries of History, dating back as early as the Greco-Roman period up until modern times, and the unique combination of ancient, Baroque, and modernist monuments is sure to blow their minds.

Valencia is primarily a coastal resort destination, however, and there are plenty of luxurious beachfront hotels offering sweeping views of the turquoise Mediterranean and its sandy coast to choose from.

Valencia Is An Affordable Coastal Destination

The top-rated ones include Las Arenas Balneario Resort, which is significantly cheaper to stay during winter, with overnight rates starting from $184, the stately One Shot Palacio Reina Victoria, in the heart of Valencia, from $193 per night, and the SH Valencia Palace, with overnights as cheap as $141.

Additionally, consumer prices in Valencia are typically lower than in other Mediterranean hotspots, which is why the city has emerged as one of Europe’s most prominent digital nomad and expat destinations.

Sunny days and vibrant culture aside, you can lead a comfortable life in Valencia, earning on average $3,040 per month, or the equivalent in euros.

Perhaps more surprisingly, Valencia is rapidly becoming a year-round destination, to the surprise of local authorities themselves, as it continued to register a higher number of arrivals, compared to most European sunny cities, as late as October.

Is Valencia Already A Year-Round Destination?

One could argue this is hardly a noteworthy feat, as Valencia is Mediterranean and, thus, it is poised for a better-than-average off-season due to its hotter climate, but tourism in nearly every single other ‘Med’ competitor tails off the closer we inch to December.

The cobbled hills of Santorini feel more tranquil, the fortified Croatian port of Dubrovnik suddenly becomes walkable again, and Southern France returns to its crowd-free, Savoyard glory – in other words, they are (nearly) abandoned by tourists as weather conditions turn gloomier.

Though this spells great news for budget travelers, who typically prefer the shoulder months as prices drop, it is a double-edged sword, with many accommodation providers and restaurants only operating seasonally, thus reducing options and a lacking social scene.

Valencia, on the other hand – like much of Southern Spain – does not suffer from the seasonal draught as much, with 85% of hotels staying open this winter and over 1.036 million arrivals recorded in October alone.

This is proof foreign visitors are quickly realizing Valencia has a lot more to offer than just beaches:

The Med may not be exactly ideal for swimming in January, and evenings may be chilly, but with the temperate climate and long hours of sunshine, this is still a perfect winter sun getaway and, most importantly, a cultural behemoth of the highest order.

Now that the world has reopened fully and normality has been reinstated, paving the way for the return of overtourism, travelers are seeking less crowded, off-the-beaten-path destinations where they can truly relax and appreciate a foreign country without all the distraction.

One of the lesser-known destinations in the undiscovered gem that is the Middle East, Saudi Arabia, is keeping a close eye on the fast-growing trend, so much so that it is planning to launch a brand new destination to keep high-end travelers looking for more exclusivity appeased.

Next year, it’s the magical Red Sea, a tourism hotspot waiting to happen where you should be headed:

Welcome To The Middle Eastern Caribbean

In the biggest piece of news to come out of the Middle East in years, their rising competitor Saudi Arabia has just confirmed a brand new luxury travel destination in their currently underdeveloped Red Sea Coast, touted as the Middle Eastern Caribbean.

The Red Sea is an enclosed body of water that the Arab Kingdom straddles.

Famous for its high concentration of salt and turquoise-blue hue, it’s remained largely ignored as a tourist destination for years.

Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea extends for over a thousand miles, from the border with the neighboring Kingdom of Jordan to the North and to Yemen in the South, and much of the coast remains untarnished.

This is largely due to Saudi’s late opening for tourism, as only in recent years has the kingdom opened its doors to foreign visitors.

Local authorities are now keen on catching up with their fellow Gulf partners, having announced the opening of a new resort zone in the Red Sea region.

What’s On The Cards For The Red Sea Coast?

According to the Red Sea project files, as many as 22 of the region’s 90 islands will be developed, with the construction of up to 50 luxury accommodations comprising 8,000 rooms and an additional 1,000 residential properties by 2030.

This is one of the largest development projects seen in the Middle East currently, which should also bear witness to the launch of a giant moon-shaped resort in Dubai.

Though the final project will not be delivered until 2030 at the earliest, a number of properties are already popping up along the coast and around the 90-island archipelago.

As executive director Chopra stated, ‘regenerative tourism’ is at the front of Saudi’s new tourism offer, as the kingdom seeks to ‘enhance’ the local communities and environment and offer more ‘transformative’ experiences as opposed to just luxury.

The Ummahat Islands will be the first to host new hotels, namely the St. Regis Red Sea Resort, where tourists can find accommodation in villas on land or floating on water, set to compete with a Ritz-Carlton for guests.

On Shura Island, Saudi leaders are planning to build a 1.2-kilometer bridge connecting it to the region’s main international airport, for the shortest possible travel distance of 30 minutes from the hub to the resort zones.

Shura itself will also feature 11 low-rise resorts designed to resemble ‘coral washed up on the beach’.

Naturally, as development spreads to other islands and coastal strips on the Red Sea mainland, visitors can expect the introduction of more state-of-the-art resorts, golf courses, marinas, and dining spots.

So far, two inland resorts have been confirmed, Desert Rock and Southern. Dunes.

There is more: Sheybarah, a quaint island 45 minutes by ferry from the mainland, is expected to become a ‘hyper-luxury’, ultra-exclusive resort with numerous over-water pods – yes, it’s a running theme – which architects have described as ‘bubbles of a diver’.

The Ultra-Luxurious Triple Bay

Elsewhere, in Amaala, a planned luxury tourism megaproject titled Triple Bay, a wellness hub is being built in an area of outstanding natural beauty, bounded by mountainous landscapes and a ‘sparkling’ sea, where guests will be able to practice diving, yachting, and other watersports.

Triple Bay is bowing in 2024 with 3,000 rooms between 25 hotels and their adjacent 900 villas and apartments, all powered by renewable energy and boasting a zero-carbon footprint, so it won’t be long until tourists can check it out for themselves.

When it comes to overtourism, Saudi Arabia is ensuring the unspoiled nature reserve that is the Red Sea does not suffer the brunt of these concurrent development projects by initially setting a cap of one million visitors a year in the area (500,000 at Amaala).

The Saudi Red Sea is home to the world’s fourth-largest barrier reef, majestic mountains, inactive volcanoes, and ancient historical sites, and the visitor cap will ensure it remains an exclusive luxury travel destination.

Finally, the newly-opened Red Sea International Airport, which began operations only in September of this year, will offer visitors a truly seamless experience, as they will be allowed to breeze past security and will not be required to pick up their own luggage.

Instead, it will be sent directly to their resort.

Los Cabos Is The Luxury Tourism Travel Capital

As confirmed by Travel + Leisure in their latest yearly report, the Pacific gem of Los Cabos, in the state of Baja California Sur, lays claim to a whopping nine of the 25 best resorts in Mexico, as well as two of the top hundred hotels worldwide.

The reader-voted award takes into account T+L readers’ opinions on each property’s rooms and facilities, location, the quality of the service provided, food, value, and other factors that are relevant to the resort experience.

The highest-charting of them, the Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal, is the best-reviewed property in Cabo, as well as the 41st best hotel in the world.

With its intimate layout, infinity pools facing the ocean, and state-of-the-art spa facilities, it is a cozy nook for beachgoers looking to relax without leaving the premises, though it is still walkable to town and within driving distance of several of Cabo’s main natural landmarks.

This Is What Makes Los Cabos Resorts Great

The Waldorf claims to celebrate Mexican heritage through cuisine and cultural activities, helping guests immerse themselves deeper in the culture while still getting pampered, and its privileged location between a cliffside and the Pacific makes it particularly scenic – and it’s only one of many.

Rosewood’s majestic Las Ventanas is the second-highest charting hotel, as well as the only other Cabo hotel to feature on the expanded top 100, with its hand-carved wooden ceiling, indigenous Mexican decorations, and limited number of suites and villas at only 84.

Judging by the size of the two leading hotels, it is almost as if travelers are favoring resorts that feel more exclusive, almost never feel busy due to the fewer rooms available, and that focus on wellness: further down the list, the One&Only Palmilla is a prime example of that.

Named one of two best hotels in Cabo for ‘holistic experiences’, alongside Casa Dorada, which did not make T+L’s ranking, it is famous for its green spaces, rustic ambiance and spa premises, promoting a closer contact with nature and utter relaxation.

Americans Can’t Get Enough Of Los Cabos

In sum, visitors love Los Cabos for how well they are received and how welcome they feel, from the instant they land at the airport to their time of departure.

This is largely attributed to the resorts’ well-trained, English-speaking staff, award-winning butler service, impressive range of amenities, proximity to California, which makes it easier to get to for West Coast residents, and of couse, Cabo’s safety as a destination.

As per the definition used by the U.S. State Department, Baja California Sur remains at Level 2 heading into winter, meaning it is one of the safest beach spots in Mexico.

Over the years, Cabo has carved a niche for itself as the go-to luxury destination for high-end travelers, and the fact nine out of Mexico’s 25 top hotels belong to its development strip is proof of that.

Cabo appeals to several different categories of travelers, from celebrities like Britney Spears, a frequent visitor to the area, to anonymous vacationers looking for a sunny break, and certainly Americans wishing to escape their mundane worries at a majestic all-inclusive.
