These Two Latin American Countries Have Just Dropped All Travel Restrictions Returning To Normal Tourism

Following Colombia, two more countries in Latin America have just lifted all of their pandemic-era travel restrictions, allowing foreign tourists to enter under pre-2020 guidelines.

Despite having been well-reputed as one of the world’s most friendly destinations in the early days of the crisis, the geopolitical region was quick to shut down its borders once vaccines became available, imposing entry bans on non-immunized visitors and other draconian laws aimed at curbing the viral spread.

After nearly two years of strict border checks, countries in the region seem ready to reinstate normality, especially after the World Health Organization declared the pandemic to be ‘over‘:

Chile And Costa Rica Lift All Travel Restrictions

Within days of each other, the Hispanic countries of Chile and Costa Rica have abolished all COVID-related entry requirements, allowing all visitors to enter without observing health-related requirements for the first time since they were first imposed in early 2020.

This means that, from now on, U.S. nationals, and indeed any non-Chilean or Costa Rica passport holders, will be able to travel to both countries without worrying about COVID mandates, including showing a vaccination certificate and/or negative tests as valid proof of entry.

Since May 5, 2023 and May 9, 2023, all of the following has applied to tourists seeking entry into Costa Rica and Chile, respectively:
- No vaccination proof is needed
- No pre-departure test is required
- No entry forms must be filled out prior to departure
- Unvaccinated travelers are not subject to stricter screening upon landing
The travel update was first issued by the relevant health authorities in the Latin states and then confirmed by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) through its COVID-19 Travel Regulations Map and, ultimately, U.S. embassies in Chile and Costa Rica.

Prior to the update, unvaccinated travelers were routinely denied boarding flying to Costa Rica or Chile unless they could present a negative antigen test result issued in the preceding days or hours. In Chile’s case, online pre-travel registration was also mandatory.

Now, vaccine discrimination is no longer carried out by border inspectors.

What About Easter Island?

Despite being part of Chile, Easter Island, a volcanic island in Polynesia, may impose different entry requirements for foreign arrivals due to its special status.

If you plan on traveling to Easter Island, check with your airline regarding entry requirements in advance.

Previously, the island had completely shut itself out from the rest of the world in an attempt to protect its small populace from the ever-evolving COVID variants. They only lifted entry bans in May 2022, though health protocols continued to be applied.

Easter Island is famous for its moai sculptures, erected by native inhabitants between the 13th and 16th centuries, depicting large human figures with oversize heads.

This destination is served by nonstop flights leaving from Santiago, in mainland Chile, or Papeete, in French Polynesia.

When you’re in a new place, it can be tempting to lower your guard and lose awareness of your surroundings. After all, you’re on vacation, and you want to have a good time. This is why tourists are natural targets for pickpockets.

But with so many pickpocketing cases, it’s important to remain alert and to keep your valuables safe.

With that in mind, here are five ways you can avoid being a victim of pickpocketing this summer:

Be Aware in High-Traffic Areas

Pickpockets love to operate in high-traffic areas. When you’re in a crowd, you expect to be jostled, and that makes it easier for pickpockets to get close to you and access your valuables.

High-traffic areas tend to be places where there are distractions. Whether you are in a train station trying to plan your journey or at a popular tourist attraction taking a selfie, you are likely to be disoriented or focusing on something else when you’re in a location that attracts high volumes of people.

Pickpockets prey on the parts of the city where they know there will be the most tourists, so you’re also most at risk when you are surrounded by other tourists.

One of the most common pickpocketing tactics is called the ‘bump and go’. One thief will pretend to bump into you accidentally then an accomplice will pick your pocket whilst you’re distracted.

This common tactic works best in high-traffic areas, so it’s important to be mindful when you’re in a crowd. If you are bumped, jostled, or if something just doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts and move away from the area.

Keep Your Valuables Hidden

Often measures intended to prevent pickpocketing in popular tourist attractions can actually be used to the pickpocket’s advantage.

One example of this is when tourist attractions boast signs intended to be helpful. These may read ‘beware pickpockets’ or ‘pickpockets operate here’.

When tourists read signs like these, they will instinctively check their valuables: it’s natural to want to make sure that your property is where you left it.

But what you are actually doing is alerting nearby pickpockets to exactly where you are storing your valuables! If you reach to your left pocket, for example, they will know that this is where your wallet is, and they will be able to access it much more quickly.

You can best protect your valuables by keeping them at the front of your body. A discrete money belt will be harder for pickpockets to access.

If you do instinctively reach to check your valuables, then keep your hand on them firmly until you leave the area. This will deter pickpockets and ensure you can feel if someone tries to access your purse or wallet.

Be Wary At The ATM

Credit card skimming is a con that can cost tourists a significant sum, but luckily this is one scam that is easy to avoid. This crime is often referred to as e-pickpocketing.

To avoid this, don’t communicate with anyone that approaches you when you’re using an ATM machine. Often thieves will suggest they can help you access your money whilst avoiding local bank fees, but in reality, they want to use a card skimming device to access your card details.

Avoid using ATM machines in quiet or run-down areas. If someone is standing too close to you when you’re trying to withdraw cash, then cancel your transaction and use a different machine instead.

You should be particularly wary of using remote ATMs if you’re traveling alone.

If you’re still not sure if an ATM machine is safe to use, then consider paying for goods and services by card instead of withdrawing cash. Many hotels will also have ATM machines or currency exchange services that are safe and reliable.

Don’t Flash The Cash

Try to camouflage your wealth. If you have to take out your wallet to pay for something, remove just the cash you need. Don’t reveal a wad of notes. And never count your money in public.

You can also conceal your wealth by leaving any large or expensive jewelry pieces at home or keeping them in your hotel room safe. Expensive designer clothes from big brands are also best avoided.

If you look expensive or are showing off expensive items, then you are implying that there is something of value in your purse or wallet.

Pickpockets look for two things: easy targets and lucrative targets. The key is to avoid making yourself look like either. So as well as hiding your wealth, you should also avoid looking like a tourist.

Items such as baseball caps, college T-shirts or sweatshirts, and big brand logos can make you stand out from the crowd, particularly in Europe, where these items are less popular. And while there’s nothing wrong with standing out, it will make you an obvious target for pickpockets.

Recognize Pickpockets

Finally, the best way to avoid being pickpocketed is to recognize pickpockets and understand how they operate.

If you notice someone loitering in a public place, checking out passers-by, or their purses and shopping bags, then they may be a pickpocket.

If someone that you don’t know is overly familiar, hugging you, or standing too close while offering directions or advice, then they could also be a pickpocket. Remember that pickpockets often work in teams, so the person being overly familiar with you could be distracting you so that their accomplice can take your wallet.

Knowledge is power, so the more you know about pickpockets and the way they operate, the more likely it is that you can avoid being their next victim.

“The ability to bring your pet makes it easier for those who work remotely to consider an extended stay, turning what was once a one-week summer vacation into a multi-week stay,” says Josh Viner, Regional Operations Director at Vacasa.

Consider Not Staying In The Center Of It All

When it comes to events, festivals, theme parks, and other attractions, the price tag can go up with proximity to the venue.

You can find some cheaper alternatives when you don’t stay right where the action is. If Walt Disney World is on your bucket list this year, consider staying off property in a location such as Caribe Royale Orlando, which is 1.5 miles from the park’s doorstep and provides shuttle bus transportation.

This Popular European Country Is Offering Free Train Travel This Summer

One of the most exciting recent developments for tourists and locals alike has been the introduction of free train travel.

This initiative was implemented last year to combat the rising cost of living as well as encourage the use of public transportation over personal vehicles.

It was such a success that it has been extended through the end of 2023, with hopes of making it permanent.

Although the intention was to alleviate the burden for Spanish citizens, the free train travel subscription is open to all who register, allowing visitors to explore the country’s vibrant cities and historic sites without having to worry about the cost of transportation.

How To Get The Free Train Pass

The free pass is only available on the Renfe train line for the Cercanías, Rodalies, and Media Distancia services.

These do not include long-distance high-speed train services, although there are currently major discounts on those as well.

To get the free pass, travelers must first register on Renfe.com or through the Renfe app, then select a route and choose “recurrent” as their rate.

You will then pay a deposit of 10 Euros (approximately $11 USD) for commuter routes or 20 Euros (approximately $22 USD) for medium-distance routes.

These deposits are refundable at the end of your subscription, providing that you’ve taken the required 16 one-way trips during the four-month subscription period.

The next subscription period is May 1^st through August 31^st, during which time travelers can make unlimited multi-journey trips with their passes.

When this time period expires, there will be another four-month subscription available through the end of December.

For most commuter routes, the generated QR code can be used via the app, but for medium-distance routes, it may be necessary to purchase your pass online or at the station and obtain a physical ticket.

There are station attendants available to help with this as well as ticket vending machines.

Tying for number one as the most used travel apps are the big ones: Airbnb, Booking, and Hopper all have the top score with an average ranking of 100 points out of a possible 100.

The popularity of these apps doesn’t show any signs of slowing down, and Hopper -whose main job is to help travelers book things at the right time to save money – has been jumping (hopping?) the charts lately, moving up to the top this month.

Coming in next is the second most popular rental property site, Vrbo, with a high score of 95 points. It’s followed by Hotels.com and the popular metasearch engine Skyscanner tying for the number 3 spot both with a score of 91 points each.

The number 5 spot is KAYAK, which calls itself the worlds leading travel search engine. KAYAK scored 75 points, putting it just ahead of Tripadvisor, which landed at number 6 on the list of most popular travel apps right now.

Spots 7 to 10 went to a variety of travel apps designed to help the user with different things. Tracking flights is made easy by FlightAware, which comes in at number 8, and hikers love Alltrails, which moved up the list this month by 5 points, tying it with HostelWorld for the number 9 spot.

Viator, an app that connects travelers with excursions, experiences, and day trips, comes in at number 9. Its popularity is likely driven by travelers looking for connection and culture in their trips. Rounding out the top 10 is Couchsurfing, which has risen to the spot after hovering below the top 10 for months.

The jump is surprising as the concept of couch surfing is not nearly as popular as it was back in the late 2000s. Perhaps it’s making a comeback due to the rising cost of accommodation and increasing added fees that travelers are faced with these days.

Spending your hard-earned yearly break sick in a hospital bed, in a foreign country where you’re unsure whether doctors can be trusted, and you may not be able to speak the language and communicate your symptoms clearly is a nightmare scenario any traveler will do their best to avoid.

Whether it’s pesky bug bites, food poisoning, or sudden viral infections, these unfortunate occurrences know no borders, though, in some countries, the risks can be substantially higher due to poor sanitary controls or other factors.

Thanks to Forbes, now we know which destinations warrant a greater degree of caution and require travelers to adopt certain preventive measures to remain in good health:

How Has Forbes Identified The Top 5 Worst Destinations For Vacation Illness?

Forbes UK has carried out extensive new research with the aim of establishing what are the riskiest destinations for travelers globally regarding episodes of sickness while on vacation.

Experts looked at data from 2.4 million Tripadvisor posts featuring the keywords ‘salmonella’, ‘gastroenteritis’, ‘e-coli’, and ‘food poisoning’, as well as what were some of the recurring countries to which these terms were attributed.

The results were then cross-referenced against ‘pertinent’ data published by official entities, such as countries the British National Health Service (NHS) has issued specific immunizations for, or regions where drinking tap water is strongly discouraged by the American Centers For Disease Control And Prevention (CDC).

The scores were compiled as the Forbes Advisor Travel Bug Index; the higher the score, the more common are bouts of illness.

The top five destinations where tourists are most affected by sickness were the following:

Cabo San Lucas represents 1/2 of Mexico’s fast-growing dual destination of Los Cabos, highly sought-after for its natural element and developed wellness culture.

Despite being the country’s safest vacation spot for 2023, at least when it comes to low crime levels, Cabo performs poorly sanitation-wise.

In total, 4,987 posts mentioning sickness were gathered, with a prevalence of travelers falling ill at 8.09%. Additionally, the tap water in Cabo is not drinkable, and up to five vaccines must be ‘considered’ by foreigners ahead of visiting, though none are mandatory.

Taking these into account, Cabo has attained an overall score of 63.3, making it the fifth riskiest destination for vacation illness.

4. Playa del Carmen, Mexico

Yet another city in Mexico has made it to the top five, with Playa del Carmen charting at number four with a score of 63.8.

In total, the Riviera Maya location has garnered 8,402 Tripadvisor posts mentioning sickness, with an estimated 6.82% of reviewers claiming to have fallen ill.

Similarly to Los Cabos, the super trendy Playa del Carmen is deemed a relatively safe destination for Americans when limited gang activity in tourist zones is taken into account, but food and water standards may not be as high outside leisure centers.

3. Sal, Cape Verde

The Cape Verdean island of Sal has been attributed a significant score of 70.6, earning it a spot in the top three.

A small archipelago located off the coast of East Africa, Cape Verde is best known for its luxurious beachfront resorts and low criminality rates, which make it one of the 16 safest nations in the continent.

Regrettably, food safety regulations may not be as strictly enforced by local restaurant owners as they would elsewhere, with reports of undercooked meat being served, guests hit by gastric illnesses, and dirty water being common in the media.

The island of Sal has had 390 mentions of sickness on Tripadvisor; far fewer than Mexico’s Cabo or Playa del Carmen, though we must consider it normally hosts less than a million visitors per year, against the Riviera Maya’s 30+ million; hence, the adjusted proportion is higher.

Based on reviews, 11.20% of vacationers are stricken with some sort of malady in Cape Verde.

2. Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt

Second on the list, Egypt’s luxurious Red Sea coastal hub of Sharm El Sheikh has 6,578 complaints on Tripadvisor, with as many as 10.76% of reviewers who have visited reporting holiday sickness at some point during their stay.

The overall score is 83.5, and the rampancy of certain infectious diseases across Egypt as a whole is so worrying health authorities in the Western World recommend visitors to get immunized with at least six different vaccines, two of those being strongly advised.

1. Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

Punta Cana may be second only to Cancun in terms of international holiday bookings in the Western Hemisphere, drawing in millions of sun-seekers irrespective of season, but it’s now been exposed in the Forbes Holiday Sickness ranking as the worst destination worldwide for food poisonings.

Up to 13,463 Tripadvisor ‘sickness’ posts were counted, and while the percentage of sick vacationers is marginally lower than Egypt’s Sharm El Sheikh at 9.61%, Punta Cana still races ahead in the overall chart with a score of 90.4.

The paradise location has been battling bad publicity as early as 2019, when an investigation led by Britain-based Sick Holidays and food tolerance company YorkTest named it the second worst for locally-acquired gastrointestinal disorders globally, with 211 cases recorded between 2017 and 2018.

In this research, it is beaten only by Hurghada in Egypt. Sadly, it seems not much has changed since then.

Should Americans Avoid These Destinations?

These results help us identify which destinations require a higher degree of caution, whether it’s when consuming local food, drinking tap water, or getting immunized, but that doesn’t mean they should be avoided or that you will most certainly fall ill vacationing in Mexico, Cape Verde, Egypt or the Dominican Republic.

A majority, if not all, resorts in these countries are reputed for the high-quality service they offer, their five-star amenities, and world-class buffet service.

When it comes to food poisoning, nothing can ever be ruled out, but it is safe to say that resort guests dining and drinking on the premises have a much lower risk of contracting diseases than those taking their chances with street food or dodgy restaurants in non-touristy zones.

Even then, only a small minority of travelers will eventually get sick, though they often feel better on their own in a couple of days, and an even smaller number will require care or serious medical interventions.

There is one simple rule to follow here:

When visiting any foreign country, make sure you check safety advisories that have been issued for that destination beforehand, and ensure your risks of getting poisoned, or infected by diseases spread locally, are greatly reduced.
