Cancun, Myrtle Beach, Miami–these classic favorites are popular for a reason, but they will also come with higher prices and more crowds.

If your heart is set on escaping to the ocean and soaking in time at the beach this spring, but you’re not a fan of busy places, never fear.

Vacation rental marketplace Home2Go just released its annual Beach Index.

Using search data, this index was compiled by prioritizing the destinations with the best weather, the least searches on Google for “spring travel” (hello less crowds), and affordable accommodation prices.

We present to you the five most underrated beach destinations in the U.S.:

Sombrero Beach, Marathon, Florida

While Florida may be one of the most popular spots for Americans on holiday, there are still some places here that feel like a secret.

Sombrero Beach in Marathon, a small island community between Key Largo and Key West, is one of these hidden treasures.

This stretch of paradise is a place that attracts mostly Floridians, and you’re likely to have more breathing room to replenish with its natural beauty.

Boasting clear turquoise waters and powdery soft sand, this beach is one of the best in the Keys.

Outside of playing in the ocean, Marathon has plenty to offer visitors, including The Turtle Hospital and Dolphin Research Center–both of which offer tours.

Adventure lovers will find excellent diving and snorkeling opportunities among the reefs, and Marathon Beach is also well known for its world-class fishing.

Boca Chica Beach, Boca Chica Village, Texas

When we start talking about Texas, your mind may go to rodeos and trendy Austin, but this mega-state is home to some pretty incredible beaches as well.

If you’re like me and crave long, desolate stretches of sand and shore over the beaches commercialized with resorts and bars, then Boca Chica Beach is the place for you.

You won’t find restaurants, hotels, or even restroom facilities here, only miles of pristine nature and emerald waters.

This is the perfect place to escape civilization and recharge in nature.

Boca Chica Beach has excellent birdwatching, mangrove orchards, and if you’re lucky you’l even spot some turtles nesting during the spring and summer months.

It also happens that this area is home to Elon Musk’s SpaceX Center; if you’re looking for a unique activity, you can head over and check out the rockets for yourself.

While I did not find an exact official date yet, there is predicted to be another launch in March of 2024!

Saint George Island State Park, Saint George Florida

Located on a barrier island off of Florida’s “forgotten coast”, you’ll find peaceful stretches of empty sand and waves here instead of high rises.

Saint George Island remains relatively undeveloped despite consistently being rated as one of the best beaches in America.

This park has a classically beautiful beach, fishing opportunities, and top-notch places to snorkel and scuba dive.

Once the sun goes down, you can take advantage of the dark sky here and stargaze by the ocean.

St George Island is a quaint island town with a laid-back atmosphere and plentiful restaurants with great fresh seafood options to try.

Surfside Beach, Surfside Texas

Located just an hour outside of Houston, this quiet beach town is the perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Surfside Beach has warm water from the Gulf of Mexico and plenty of waves to play in.

In fact, this lesser-known spot is one of the best places for surfing in Texas.

This sleepy Texas town lacks commercial hotels, and is best defined by its colorful beach houses available to rent from locals on Vrbo or Airbnb.

Gulf Shores Beach, Gulf Shores Alabama

When it comes to dreamy travel destinations in the U.S., Alabama may not have been a state that you thought had much to offer.

But Gulf Shores Alabama will pleasantly surprise you–with miles of sugary white beaches, award winning restaurants, and plenty to do, this Southern gem may just be your new favorite escape.

When planning a spring getaway, it’s easy to be tempted by exotic choices such as Mexico or the Caribbean.

But, if you’re willing to sacrifice the beach, there are a host of amazing cities right on our doorstep here in the United States that are amazing places to travel to in the spring.

One such, perhaps underrated, city is Denver, Colorado.

It might not be the first place you’d think of for domestic travel; however, it seems like its popularity is on a very strong upward curve.

An impressive 77.8 million passengers used Denver International Airport in 2023, which is not only a new all-time record but also a 12.1% increase in 2022.

Stats like this show just how popular Denver is as a destination – so why should you consider visiting the ‘Mile-High City’ this Spring?

It’s Shoulder Season

Denver’s two main shoulder seasons are in the fall and in the spring.

Between March and May, you will find the city has more comfortable temperatures compared to the extremes of summer and winter, and it should also be less crowded.

This can lead to cheaper hotels and other accommodations in the city – you can fairly easily find a hotel in the $125 to $150 per night price bracket during the spring, possibly even cheaper if you stay a little outside the center.

And if you do decide to do that, you can easily get around on Denver’s affordable and convenient public transport.

There’s a strong bus and light rail network, and you can get tickets for each on a handy RTD app on your smartphone.

Cheap And Easy To Get To

Denver International Airport is home to two major U.S. airlines, Frontier and United, so you can be assured there is almost limitless choice when it comes to flights.

A brief check-in with Skyscanner shows that you can get flights to Denver for an average price of about $50 one-way in the spring from American locations such as Atlanta, Kansas City, Dallas, Portland, Detroit, Los Angeles, Memphis, Miami, and more.

Tasty Temptations

It might not always get the recognition it deserves on this count, but Denver is a great city for food lovers.

And between 1-10 March, the city will run its annual Denver Restaurant Week event with four specific price points to choose from: $25, $35, $45, or $55.

This means you can enjoy a multi-course meal at one of over 200 participating restaurants for a set price – it’s a great way to fully explore the food scene here.

This year will also be the 20^th anniversary of the event, so expect some extra fanfare and maybe even some extra special offers.

City Of Art And Culture

Of course, Denver is well-known as a great base camp for a winter holiday, but different parts of the city come to life in the spring as things start to warm up.

In May, in particular, a host of music events will take place, such as the Five Points JazzFest and the Denver Day of Rock.

That same month will also host the Colfax Marathon and the popular Cinco de Mayo celebration.

In between all those great events, you can fill the time by checking out Denver’s excellent art scene – Denver Art Museum just re-opened one of its main buildings after renovations.

There is an extensive regional trail system throughout Denver that can show you the city from a different angle and make hiking more accessible to everyone in your traveling party.

Several good books have been written about urban hiking in Denver, so take a quick search on the internet and see what you can find.

Family Friendly

There are many great family-friendly attractions in Denver that make it ideal for a long weekend in Spring.

Examples include Elitch Gardens Theme and Water Park, Denver Skatepark, and Lakeside Amusement Park.

Spring break is just around the corner, and these are the most popular destinations that American travelers are headed to this season.

According to recent data from the travel booking platform Hopper, these are the most-booked destinations in the U.S. this spring.

Unsurprisingly, several of the top destinations this spring are located in the Sunshine State. Florida has always been a hotspot for spring breakers.

Some of the other trending destinations are located out West and in the South.

Here are the most popular U.S. destinations for this spring:

1. Orlando, Florida

Orlando is a great destination to visit during the spring. The most popular attractions in Orlando are the theme parks, namely Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando.

As someone who has been to Orlando’s theme parks dozens of times, I have to say that spring can be an extremely crowded time to visit, especially around the Easter holidays. My favorite time to visit Disney and Universal is in May when the spring break crowds have died down.

Of course, there’s plenty to do in Orlando aside from theme parks. The Central Florida city is becoming known as a trendy destination for dining, culture, and nightlife.

2. Las Vegas, Nevada

The second most popular destination in the U.S. this spring is Las Vegas. Nicknamed Sin City, Las Vegas definitely lives up to its reputation if you are looking for a crazy spring break trip.

This city is famous for its wild nightlife and casinos where you can try your luck all night long. But there’s another side to Las Vegas if that’s not your style.

Las Vegas can also be a family-friendly destination with lots of entertainment and shows for all ages. There’s the underrated Arts District to explore and breathtaking nature like the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, just a short drive away.

3. Miami Beach, Florida

Miami Beach is the quintessential spring break destination. This beachfront city is actually separate from Miami — but it’s just a short drive away from Miami and connected by several bridges.

If you’re looking for a beach trip, you can’t go wrong with Miami Beach this spring. The main strip is lined with high-rise hotels and condos, and the beach itself has white sand and clear turquoise-blue water.

There are tons of opportunities for dining and nightlife, and you can easily get to Miami for a dose of arts and culture in the Wynwood Art District or Little Havana.

4. Fort Lauderdale, Florida

The third Florida city among the most popular destinations in the U.S. this spring is Fort Lauderdale. Located about 30 miles north of Miami, Fort Lauderdale has become increasingly popular with spring breakers in recent years.

It’s a great alternative to Miami if you are looking for a slightly different vibe. Fort Lauderdale tends to be more laidback than Miami, and it’s easier to get around.

The Las Olas area is the best place to stay to be close to restaurants, shopping, and nightlife. The beaches in Fort Lauderdale are also excellent and spring is the perfect time to go for amazing weather.

Away from the magic of Disney are four new luxury hotels welcoming guests in 2024. On Lake Nona, there will be the new Aloft Orlando Lake Nona opening doors this month.

Additionally, there are a pair of new resorts tourists can stay at – Villatel Orlando Resort and the Evermore Orlando Resort.

Villatel comes with the caveat of a soft opening in 2024, with full completion expected in 2025. While the Evermore is a gargantuan property with a man-made lagoon neighboring another new lavish hotel – the Conrad Orlando.

Some Orlando hotels received cushy upgrades, too, with the most noticeable being the 5-star Waldorf Astoria Orlando, with an overhaul of select rooms and culinary offerings.

Affordable And Sunny

Even with lavish places to stay, Orlando is where fun-filled days meet affordability. It’s not only Americans flocking to Florida; Orlando has seen a surge in international arrivals too.

It is one of the most well-connected U.S. destinations. Travelers come from all over the map, knowing they can stay on a budget, all while enjoying the great weather.

There’s even a new train to reach Orlando from Miami for a Florida-packed itinerary.

The list is a comprehensive one that covers all the bases for each kind of spring break vacationer – here’s the top 7:

7. Fort Lauderdale, Florida

A quieter and slightly less expensive destination than nearby Miami, Fort Lauderdale is becoming an incredibly popular pick for spring break travelers.

With a 24-mile stretch of beautiful beaches and fantastic restaurants that specialize in seafood and Latin-influenced cuisine, Fort Lauderdale has all the ingredients for a great spring break.

If you’re looking to keep spending down, many of its attractions are free such as Anne Kolb Nature Center, Fort Lauderdale Swap Shop flea market, and concerts at Hollywood Beach Broadwalk.

6. Phoenix, Arizona

A record number of people flew through Phoenix’s Harbor International Airport last year, showcasing that it’s a firm favorite among travelers.

But there are still plenty of hidden gems dotted across the U.S.

6. Maine

The state with the 6^th highest number of hidden gems is Maine.

Tourists visit Maine for its outdoor activities and a whopping 90% of the state is covered in trees.

Maine also boasts 3,500 miles of coastline, which attracts rafters and water sport enthusiasts, and some of the most popular attractions in the state include the Acadia National Park as well as the Portland Museum of Art.

Some of the best-hidden gem attractions in the state include the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens and the Cape Neddick Nubble Lighthouse. Outdoor pursuits dominate here and it’s a perfect destination for outdoorsy types and adventure lovers.

5. Utah

Utah is the U.S. State with the 5th highest number of hidden gems. 219 of the 4,126 attractions in the State are considered hidden gems.

Some of the best hidden gem attractions in Utah include the Capitol Reef National Park or the Escalante Petrified Forest State Park.

Utah is best known for its incredible scenic views and wide range of beautiful National Parks. With its high desert mountains and plummeting canyons, you’re sure to fall in love with the hidden gems of this red rock state.

4. Hawaii

It’s impossible to believe that Hawaii boasts any hidden gems, considering the huge number of tourists that visit the State each year. But despite this there are plenty of lesser-known attractions to enjoy and explore here.

According to the report, there are 418 hidden gem attractions in Hawaii.

Of course, Hawaii is best known for its outstanding natural beauty and stunning beaches. Active volcanoes, tall peaks, an incredible array of wildlife and white sand beaches all attract travelers to Hawaii.

If you want to get off the beaten path then some of the state’s main hidden gem attractions include the Hoomaluhia Botanical Garden, Likeke falls, and the Hawaii Tropical Bioreserve and Garden.

3. Wyoming

Some of Wyoming’s most famous attractions include the famous Yellowstone National Park, the beautiful hot springs, and the diverse array of wildlife throughout the state.

But as well as these obvious attractions there are also a whopping 120 attractions in Wyoming that are considered to be hidden gems.

One of the best of these is the Devil’s Tower National Monument. This is a 870 foot stone monument that is the center of many native Indian religious ceremonies and offer spectacular views.

It’s worth noting that in June, climbing the tower is suspended due to the Native Americans holding their ceremonies, so you should avoid visiting then if possible.

2. Alaska

Alaska is a breathtaking destination with a well-deserved reputation for its natural beauty, wide-open spaces, mountains and glaciers.

The tallest mountain in North America is in Alaska in the heart of the State’s Denali National Park and Preserve. Alaska’s Glacier Bay National Park also attracts visitors from all over the world for its stunning fjords and glaciers.

But as well as these famous and obvious attractions, you’ll also find a huge number of lesser-known hidden gems in Alaska, which is the destination with the second-largest percentage of hidden gems in the U.S.

One of the best-hidden gems in Alaska is the Alaska Native Heritage Center. This is a great place to learn more about Alaskan native culture and features a life-sized village where you can experience dancing, crafts, and storytelling.

1. Colorado

Colorado is officially the U.S. state with the highest number of hidden gems. According to recent research a whopping 10.51% of attractions in the state are classified as hidden gems.

There are many wonderful attractions for both national and international visitors, and 996 of them are considered to be hidden gems. One of the best of these is the Garden Of The Gods.

This is a huge park located in Colorado Springs and boasts some of the best rock climbing and hiking routes in the state.

If you’re looking for something a little more mainstream, then the blend of cities, mountains, and valleys makes Colorado well worth visiting, some of its biggest attractions include the Rocky Mountains National Park and the Denver Botanic Garden.

Hawaiian Airlines is adding new non-stop flights from May this year, including Salt Lake City to Honolulu, Sacramento to Lihue, and Sacramento to Kona.

These new flights are on top of a major expansion of existing routes, including new weekly flights being added from both Austin and Boston and an expansion of the daily services from Las Vegas and Los Angeles.

Consistently Good Winter Weather

The climate is Hawaii is pretty consistent throughout the year, which makes it an ideal winter sun destination.

Between November and April, temperatures usually sit in the high 70s, getting a little cooler at night.

The Hawaiian winter is generally the rainier of the two seasons here. However, showers are normally short-lived and localized due to the strong prevailing winds in the Pacific Ocean.

Events Calendar Never Sleeps

Winter is definitely not the off-season when it comes to events in Hawaii – right through January and February, there is plenty going on.

You can get an early taste of spring at the Waimea Cherry Blossom Heritage Festival on Hawaii Island on 3 February, while arts and craft fans can get their fix during the Kauai Quilt Show from 9-21 February.

Popularity Surging Against The Odds

Those aforementioned wildfires were probably the only reason Hawaii didn’t break its tourism record in 2023.

The latest visitor number figures for 2023 were up around 5% on 2022 and only around 6% down on the figure from 2019.

Without the brief pause in tourism to Maui in late summer last year, this record surely would have been broken, which just goes to show the pulling power of Hawaii as a travel destination.
