Because while most of us expected classic summertime hotspots like Miami, Myrtle Beach, or New York to top the list, six far more underrated cities dominated the ranking instead.

Spokane, WA

Lovingly called “Lilac City” by locals, Spokane is by far one of the best cities you can visit if you don’t want to compromise between adventure opportunities and that traditional city charm.

If you’re put off by the idea of a sedentary holiday where all you do is sit around all day, this is the perfect destination for you.

With its stunning Riverfront Park (home to Spokane Falls), Centennial Trail, and an endless array of galleries, theaters, and music venues, the Washington gem promises a summer to remember.

Duluth, MN

For those of you looking to explore places that are further into the heart of the country, Duluth is one of the most underrated gems you’ll come across.

Again, this is a city that caters mostly to adventurous souls, with its miles of rugged landscapes and iconic Superior Hiking Trail, which offers the most awe-worthy views of the lake and surrounding forests.

And if you don’t feel like going on a hike, a relaxing bike ride along the North Shore Scenic Drive (which, believe me, lives up to its name) might just be the summertime experience you were looking for.

Marquette, MI

With just a little over 20,000 inhabitants, this is officially the smallest city to make the list, but what Marquette lacks in fame or size, it more than makes up for in breathtaking, untouched views.

This charming Michigan gem is actually the closest you’ll get to a more typical summer vacation today.

Featuring a rugged coastline full of picturesque beaches, here, you’ll get plenty of opportunities to swim, paddleboard, kayak, and do everything else that requires calm waters and summery temperatures.

Hikers won’t have to worry, either, though.

Juneau, AK

If you’re looking to enjoy a truly alternative summer vacation this year, exploring the mountainous wonders of the Alaskan capital might be just what you need.

Surrounded by towering peaks and pristine fjords, Juneau looks like something straight out of a fairytale, and while summer temperatures are obviously nowhere near what they are throughout most of the country, they’re mild enough for you to go hiking, glacier trekking, and wildlife viewing without freezing – so if you’ve ever been tempted to explore Alaska, this summer might be the best time to finally do it.

Madison, WI

Famously nestled between two scenic lakes, Madison is the perfect place to go if you’re looking for a relaxing, rejuvenating retreat.

Madeira is a draw year-round, but the weather is splendid in winter, too, with average temperatures hovering in the high 60s throughout January and February.

Visitors to Madeira can enjoy the ocean breeze through its seemingly endless peaks and valleys reminiscent of Hawaii.

Although, you may want to brush up on Portuguese rather than Lion King songs.

Made For Exploring

While some of us want to handle life’s stresses by booking a vacation and doing absolutely nothing but lounge around, Madeira will draw you in to explore its wonders and charming towns.

While the idea of sun, sand, and surf is very appealing during the wintertime, sometimes it’s actually kind of nice to embrace the true meaning of the season.

That means getting hunkered down in a cozy cabin in front of a roaring fire while the snow falls on the mountains and pine trees outside.

It’s a dreamy winter travel vision in its own right, and luckily the United States has some of the best places on earth to live out this fantasy.

Perhaps the most popular, and with very good reason, is the state of Colorado.

Whether it’s skiing, fine dining, luxury wellness spas, or just hanging out in hipster mountain towns, this winter wonderland has so much to offer…

Winter Sports Paradise

It’s well-known that Colorado is home to some of the best skiing locations on the planet, with towns such as Vail, Aspen, and Breckenridge among the favorites.

There are more than 1,500 miles of ski slopes in the state, served by 28 ski resorts and over 300 ski lifts – so even when it gets busy, you’ll always be able to find somewhere to go.

It’s not only downhill winter sports that are unrivaled here; you can also partake in snowshoeing or cross-country skiing at one of the many Nordic Centers in Colorado, as well as try your hand at dog sledding, snow tubing, or even snowmobiling.

Despite the cold, Colorado boasts many sunny days in winter and very dry snow, so being out in it all day doesn’t feel like a chore.

An Appetite For Après

After any amount of winter sports, you’re going to be ready to eat.

But one of the great things about Colorado is that it’s fast-becoming a recognized foodie destination, so you could go there just for the food if skiing isn’t your thing.

Boulder, Aspen, and Vail are all home to some incredible restaurants, with brewhouse-style grub being one of the main things they excel at.

The state even has a growing number of Michelin starred restaurants for those seeking luxury dining.

Scenery Like Nowhere Else

About half of Colorado is mountainous, making it a place where breathtaking scenery is just part and parcel of being there.

While some of the main hiking trails may be a little less accessible in winter, there are still plenty of places to catch a glimpse of a stunning vista at this time of year.

The valley town of Breckenridge is best viewed from Boreas Pass Road, while Pikes Peak Summit near Colorado Springs can still be viewed from Garden of the Gods in winter.

Another great sight to witness is the Colorado National Monument, which you can check out from several different lookout points around Monument Canyon.

Ensure that you are prepared for winter driving conditions and keep an eye on snowfall in the weather forecast if you’re on a sightseeing trip in a car.

Mountain Towns Are A Vibe

There’s just something about being in a mountain town that gets your inner party animal going.

One place where you can enjoy the nightlife long after the sun has gone down is Colorado Springs, which is predicted to be one of the trending travel destinations in 2024 according to a recent study by Airbnb.

Then there’s the state’s biggest city, Denver, which is known for its great music scene, welcoming bars, and a large number of independent breweries.

Warm Up The Cold Winter

The wellness scene in Colorado is excellent, and one of the best ways to experience it is by staying at one of the many amazing hot springs.

There are almost 30 different hot springs in the state covering everything from ultimate luxury to family-friendly resorts – all of which will leave you feeling recharged and cleansed thanks to their warm waters that are naturally rich in minerals.

Durango Hot Springs is one of the most popular for luxury, while Glenwood Hot Springs offers water slides for the family.

While most of the accessories were admittedly better-suited for women, I still had to see what was available 😂. They also plan to add more accessories for men in the future.

Endless Things To Do

Fort Lauderdale is packed FULL of things to do, and that’s if you even feel the need to leave the W!

The W Fort Lauderdale has the perfect place to soak up the sun in style on its rooftop WET deck, complete with an amazing pool, cabanas, and staff walking around constantly to make sure your drink is always full.

Another cool thing about staying at the W Fort Lauderdale is the events they have at night. We were able to take part in cocktails with a live artist and music, and a really fun game night.

And don’t worry, if all you want to do is rest and relax, the AWAY spa is just an elevator ride away from your room. I’m still dreaming about the AMAZING massage I got while staying there.

Looking to get out of the hotel for a while? Fort Lauderdale won’t disappoint. Go for a bike ride along the beach, go rug-making, try a ton of different foods at Sistrunk Marketplace, or simply walk across the street to the gorgeous beach in front of the W.

If you’re looking for an amazing dinner spot, look no further than Rocco’s Tacos, and don’t leave without trying the freshly made guacamole! This was my favorite dinner of the trip and definitely a place I’ll be visiting again.

December brings temperatures in the high 70s, perfect for a day out at the beach or an afternoon sunning out on the WET deck.

Rain is quick to pass, and nighttime temperatures are mild enough to walk around comfortably with evening wear.

Whatever vibe you’re going for, beach bum, old money, or fit and fab, Fort Lauderdale has the perfect weather to accommodate.

Gorgeous Beaches

Fort Lauderdale offers WAY more than just beaches, but it is still the perfect place to lay in the sand and forget about the 9 to 5 waiting for you back home.

Whether you want to nap all day while working on your tan or get a little more active on a paddleboard, the beaches in Fort Lauderdale will not disappoint.

Plus, since the city is basically sitting right on the beach, you don’t have to go far to grab food, go shopping, or switch things up with a massage at the AWAY spa.

It’s Worth It

If you’ve been wondering if Fort Lauderdale is worth spending a few days checking out on your next trip, add it to your list!

According to Rodrigo Esponda Cascajares, FITURCA’s director, the dollar’s instability may in fact lead to an increase in tourists opting for luxurious vacations, as perception of value increases, and customers favor spending dollars where they know they’ll get their money’s worth.

Now more than ever, travelers are seeking a more meaningful experience rather than just another beach vacay, and they are often not hesitant about shelling out the dough if that means identifying value in a product or when they are sure they will get a high degree of satisfaction from it.

Having hit a peak of 97% in 2021, Los Cabos’ satisfaction rates are among the highest in Mexico, with visitors commending the service offered at hotels, the highly developed infrastructure and applauding the resort zone’s tight surveillance and safety.

Unlike the Mexican Caribbean, which has taken a markedly different approach in promoting affordable all-inclusive packages over the years, Cabo’s eyed big spenders.

A Favorite Among Celebrities

Tourists are no strangers to flying semi-private jets when taking trips to Cabo, as airfares are not as prohibitive as one might think, and unlike the average Cancun visitor, who wants to enjoy their time in the sun without breaking the bank, Cabo’s clientele is actively looking for deluxe experiences.

In recent years, authorities have invested heavily in converting Cabo from a mere resort town into a luxurious wellness capital of Latin America, so much so that it now boasts the highest concentration of five-star spa resorts anywhere in the subcontinent.

From frequent celebrity guests like Britney Spears and Jamie Foxx to anonymous vacationers from California who put aside some money every month and count down the days to live it up in Cabo at the end of the year, it has become Mexico’s number-one luxury destination.

Cabo has the distinction of being home to the second-best hotel in the world in Waldorf Astoria, as selected by the prestigious French publication La Liste.

Overall, it features six times on the list, with other noteworthy entries including Montage Los Cabos, straddling the Pacific, and the landmark Grand Velas, an award-winning listing renowned for its architecture and impressive amenities.

Demand Will Keep Increasing In The Near Future

As Cascajares says, ‘the number of people interested in a luxurious vacation in the area will keep increasing in the following years’.

Yet another recent report has showed more than one in ten tourists traveling to Cabo are devoted foodies, as the Mexican Capes are known all over Mexico for their upscale restaurants and unique blends of indigenous Mexican cuisine and modern influences.

Other five-star experiences include well-frequented nightclubs, with better-selected customers than the Mexican Caribbean’s jungle parties, and yacht tours, with a growing number of guests renting private boats to explore natural attractions off the mainland, such as the famous Arcos.

Cabo is not only trendy: it is the guarantee of a well-spent, truly relaxing, luxurious vacation.

Young professionals are the future of cruising.

According to the Cruise Lines International Association’s annual report, 25 to 40-year-olds are the most enthusiastic demographic for both returning to cruises and trying cruising for the first time.

While you’d expect more of a silver-haired crowd on a typical cruise, it’s still not a total shock that younger crowds are turning to the seas.

Travelers in their 20s and 30s today are the product of family-friendly cruising promotions in the early 2000s, now grown up and returning to the familiar no-plans-needed vacation staple. But why are they opting into cruising now?

Social Media

Cruise lines are getting the word out on social media: This isn’t your parents’ cruise experience.

Algorithms on TikTok and Youtube give a helping hand to cruise vlogs that showcase more relaxed on-deck environments, improved “foodie” dining experiences, trendy activities, and adventurous excursions. Most highlight the excellent value and all-inclusive ease of cruising.

Some videos showcase remote work from the pool deck for a picture-perfect workation, while others lure in young professionals with the promise of digital detox.

Virgin Voyages is one of the cruise providers tapping into the potential of social media to include younger travelers. Virgin recently engaged over 1 million TikTok users with a viral #NowWereVoyaging dance challenge to the tune of its Karma Chameleon music-video-style ad campaign.

“We’ve seen that piece of advertising be three times more effective than any other advertising we’d ever done,” Virgin president Nirmal Saverimuttu recently told CBS.

Updated Amenities and Customization

Move over dress codes and shuffleboard. Today’s cruises offer unpretentious hospitality that prioritizes the unique experiences younger professionals value.

Fresh amenities tailored for the 25 to 40-year-old crowd include:
- Silent discos
- Brunch bars
- Wine tastings
- Vegan options
- Escape rooms
- Laser tag
- Outdoor yoga
- Mixology classes
- Improved Wi-Fi
- Culturally immersive excursions
- Adventure sports
While the wider variety of age-appropriate amenities is definitely a perk, the increasing flexibility and uber-customization of these activities really attracts young professionals.

This age group dances to the beat of their own drum, and wouldn’t be caught dead being herded into the same inflexible activities as every other passenger every day. They know what they want, so cruise lines are letting them have it.

Sampling Multiple Countries

Young professionals are short on PTO and budget-conscious. Cruises let them sample the maximum number of destinations in one hassle-free short trip before choosing where to spend their hard-earned dollars and vacation days.

This way, travelers don’t need to commit to a place they’ve never seen before. They can feel confident in planning their next extended vacation in a destination they loved from the cruise route.

Destination sampling also lets younger travelers have diverse off-ship experiences and create more social media content from a variety of destinations in the same trip.

Travel advisor Mary Jane Manole of Luxx Travel recently told Travel Weekly, “Young travelers like to be challenged, excited and have material for their social media.”

Ready-Made Itinerary

Many young professionals are dealing with decision fatigue as they reach pivotal moments in their careers and personal lives all at the same time.

Under persistent stress about whether you’re making the right choices, a ready-made vacation with someone else at the helm may be just what the doctor ordered.

“The hardest decision I had to make over the course of four days was which deck chair to pick for my morning sunbathing session,” explained young professional Sara Bosworth when trying out Carnival Pride.

To Celebrate

Your twenties and thirties are a time of big changes and celebration-worthy wins: promotions, new jobs, business launches, home ownership, marriage, milestone birthdays, and more. Cruises have long represented festivity, so younger travelers are rightly turning to the seas to toast their successes.

“Young customers are most often on board to celebrate, for a birthday, graduation, work promotion or even a divorce,” said Nathan Rosenberg, the chief brand officer at Virgin Voyages, recently commented.

With customized celebration packages, all-inclusive alcohol options, and on-deck parties and clubs, cruise ships are a great way for young professional travelers to celebrate their achievements.

According to the same 2023 Global Travel Trends Report from American Express Travel, respondents from a survey noted that 89% wanted to travel to a new destination they’d never been to before.

This can be looked at in a few different ways, but the common thing is finding something new.

You don’t have to travel to a faraway place to discover something new about it.

Wildlife reserves cover a large portion of both islands. In fact, the Vieques National Wildlife Reserve includes 20,000 acres of protected land and nine nautical miles of a marine reserve. One of the best ways to explore the remote parts of the island is to rent a Jeep, scooter, or even golf cart.

How To Get There

Getting to Culebra and Vieques is relatively easy. Both are accessible by small plane, with flights leaving several times a day from San Juan (Isla Grande airport and SJU). The flights are only around 25-35 minutes, depending on which island you’re going to, and cost around $100.

Ferries are the more economical option, although not quite as convenient. Ferries depart from the small town of Ceiba on the eastern coast, which is about 40 minutes from San Juan. The trip is 30-45 minutes, and tickets for either island will only put you out $2-$4. Although ferries leave several times a day, they can get busy, so it’s recommended to buy your ticket in advance.
