But Which One Is Right For You?

Seeing the list of the most popular parks is a great starting point, but it doesn’t answer the most important question: which one fits your unique travel style?

A park’s popularity doesn’t guarantee it’s your perfect match. The last thing you want is to book a vacation centered on strenuous activity when you were really hoping for a more relaxed vibe.

Choosing a park that aligns with your interests is the secret to an amazing trip. In a year where some parks are seeing absolutely massive crowds, knowing your priorities can help you find a better experience.

What kind of scenery calls to you?

    🏔️

    Towering Mountains

Granite peaks, alpine lakes, and dramatic ranges.

    🏜️

    Canyons & Deserts

Vast canyons, red rock cliffs, and unique desert plants.

    🌊

    Coasts & Forests

Rugged ocean shorelines meeting lush, diverse forests.

    🌎

    Geology & Wildlife

Geysers, wildlife corridors, and ancient, rolling hills.

How do you want to spend your day?

    🧗

    Challenging Hikes

I want strenuous, iconic hikes with epic rewards.

    🚗

    Scenic Drives

Accessible viewpoints and easier, beautiful walks.

    🗺️

    Diverse Exploration

A bit of everything! From coasts to mountains or climbing to stargazing.

    And your #1 priority is…?

    🐻

    Iconic Wildlife

To see bison, bears, and elk in their natural habitat.

    📸

    Famous Landmarks

    Seeing those world-famous, postcard-perfect views.

    🌳

    Lush Forests & Water

Dense forests, rainforests, and waterfalls are my top priority.

    A Unique Vibe

Seeking otherworldly landscapes and a bit more solitude.

    Powered by Travel Off Path

Do you want to see iconic wildlife like bears and bison, or are you hoping to find a unique slice of solitude under a blanket of stars? Answering these questions first is key.

How Our National Park Matcher Works

  • AVA Resort Cancun Review: This Massive New Resort Actually Has A Heartbeat & Vibe

AVA Resort Cancun Review: This Massive New Resort Actually Has A Heartbeat & Vibe

    [ad_1]

When you hear the stats on the new AVA Resort Cancun, a certain kind of skepticism is natural. With over 1,600 rooms, it is, by any definition, a truly massive property. For seasoned travelers, “massive” can often be a code word for long lines, impersonal service, and that dreaded “burn and churn” mentality where you feel more like a number than a guest.

We at Travel Off Path have visited our fair share of mega-resorts, so we went to check out the property with a healthy dose of skepticism, fully expecting to experience some of these big-resort growing pains.

We were wrong. In fact, we were completely surprised.

The AVA Resort Cancun is that rare unicorn in the world of hospitality: a mega-resort with the intimate soul and vibrant heartbeat of a boutique hotel. Its ability to deliver on both epic scale and personalized service is nothing short of remarkable, and it has immediately established itself as a top-tier contender in the luxury all-inclusive space.

The Heartbeat of the Resort: The Promenade ❤️

The true genius of the AVA and the secret to its unique vibe can be found on its main level. Everything—and we mean everything—is located on one magnificent, air-conditioned indoor promenade that stretches for over half a mile along the entire length of the resort.

    Racing Simulator Cancun

This brilliant design choice solves the single biggest problem that plagues other giant resorts: navigation. Gone are the days of deciphering confusing maps, getting lost on winding outdoor paths, or waiting ten minutes for a golf cart just to get to dinner. At AVA, every restaurant, bar, shop, and activity entrance is right there on the promenade. It’s the central nervous system of the resort, making it unbelievably easy to get your bearings.

    Bar At Ava resort Cancun

But it’s more than just convenient. This layout creates an incredible, dynamic energy. In the evening, the promenade comes alive. You can stroll from a high-end cocktail bar to a chic boutique, grab a scoop of authentic gelato, listen to the music spilling out of a restaurant, and window-shop, all in climate-controlled bliss. It feels like the vibrant Royal Promenade of a luxury cruise ship, but on a much grander and more luxurious scale. It encourages exploration and allows you to bar-hop and people-watch, creating a sense of community and excitement that is simply missing from other resorts where amenities are scattered across acres of land.

    Escape Room Ava Resort

You Will Not Be Bored: A Deep Dive into the Activities 🎳

While the AVA is conveniently located just 10 minutes from the airport, it is not in the bustling Hotel Zone. The trade-off for this relative isolation? An absolutely staggering array of on-site activities that makes it almost impossible to get bored. You could genuinely spend a full week here and not experience everything the resort has to offer. The list is almost overwhelming:

    • For the thrill-seeker: A full-scale laser tag arena, a state-of-the-art arcade with racing simulators, and even a multi-room escape room experience.
    • For the family (or kids at heart): A sleek, modern bowling alley that feels more like a private lounge.
    • For the evening: A stunning, professional-grade theater hosting nightly shows and entertainment.
    • For practical needs: A collection of chic shops, a “tienda” for sundries and snacks, and a well-stocked pharmacy.

This is all before you even step outside.

    Arcade Ava Resort

Pools, a Lagoon, and Endless Loungers ☀️

The outdoor space at AVA is just as impressive as the interior. A series of absolutely giant pools stretches across the entire oceanfront length of the property, meaning you are never far from a place to cool off. And for anyone who has experienced the dreaded 6 AM “towel game” at other resorts, you can breathe a sigh of relief. There are literally thousands of comfortable lounge chairs available at all hours of the day. Finding a great spot is never a problem.

    Saltwater Lagoon Ava Resort

The true showstopper, however, is the expansive saltwater lagoon. This is a massive, crystal-clear body of water powered by sustainable technology that provides a perfect, protected environment for water sports. We spent an afternoon kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding (all included, of course) in the calm, turquoise water. In the middle of the lagoon is a huge, inflatable obstacle course, and yes, the adults were having just as much fun on it as the kids. Ensuring younger members of the familia have their own slice of paradise, the resort boasts a sprawling kids’ waterpark with multiple slides designed for endless aquatic fun.

Stand Up Paddle Board Ava Resort

The “Familia” Feeling: Service, Dining & Rooms 🍽️

This is where the AVA truly defies its size. You will hear the staff use the word “familia” a lot, and it’s not just a marketing slogan; it’s a philosophy that clearly runs through the veins of the resort. From the bartenders to the servers to the concierge, every interaction feels personal, warm, and genuine.

The food and beverage program is a major highlight. With 17 restaurants and bars, the quality and variety are exceptional. The Black Iron steakhouse serves up incredible ribeyes, tenderloins, and New York strips that are all included in your stay. Service at Veranda, the beautiful Italian restaurant, was flawless and attentive—and trust us, we’re picky. The room service breakfast arrived hot, fresh, and exactly on time. And after dinner, a stop at the gelato shop for one of their endless flavors became a nightly ritual.

    Veranda Italiano Ava Resort

The rooms themselves are spectacular. Every single room at the AVA is oceanfront, so there are no bad views. The beds are huge and incredibly comfortable, the robes are luxuriously soft, and the amenities are top-of-the-line, right down to the in-room Nespresso machines. The minibar is, of course, fully stocked and replenished daily.

The One Caveat & The Final Verdict

So, is it perfect? In nearly every way, yes. But for the sake of a fully transparent review, we must mention the one area where the Cancun Hotel Zone has an edge: the beach. The sand at AVA is soft and the area is well-maintained, but due to its location, it can be heavily affected by seaweed during the sargassum season, and the water doesn’t have that almost impossibly electric blue color you find further up the coast.

    Beach At Ava

However—and this is a big however—the resort’s incredible pools and the massive, perfectly swimmable lagoon more than make up for it. For a resort experience this complete, it’s a trade-off we would happily make again.

So, do we recommend it? Absolutely, and without hesitation. It is a true, luxurious 5-star all-inclusive experience that somehow manages to feel both epic and intimate at the same time. The AVA has its service down to a science, and we dare say it is a major new competitor for legacy mega-resorts like Moon Palace. And that’s a very exciting thing for Cancun.

  • Move Over Tokyo! Osaka’s Fun & Funky Vibe Winning Over Travelers

Move Over Tokyo! Osaka’s Fun & Funky Vibe Winning Over Travelers

    [ad_1]

    Last Updated

If you’ve always dreamed of visiting Japan, then it might be time to forget those Tokyo Nights and plan a trip to a younger, hipper city instead.

I’m talking about Osaka. Osaka is the 3rd largest city in Japan but it is still referred to as Japan’s Second City.

Shinsekai the renowned culinary district of Osaka, offers a high-rise view from the Tsutenkaku Tower

Osaka has a very different look and feel to Tokyo.

In Tokyo everyone is busy and rushing to get somewhere while people in Osaka feels more casual and relaxed.

Osaka feels like Tokyo’s little sister: younger, more exciting, and more carefree. And that’s why this incredible city is winning over travelers right now.

    A Funky Party Playground

Japan is my favorite country in the world, and Osaka is its party playground.

Osaka is grittier and dirtier than Tokyo. All those rules that you’ll read about in your Japan Guidebook, like not eating on the street or watching the volume of your voice, will go right out of the window here!

    Dotonbori Canal, Osaka, Japan

Japanese people travel to Osaka to gamble, party, and generally let their hair down.

This is why you’ll find a huge concentration of bars, karaoke mega clubs, and gaming centers in the heart of the city.

If you really want to party, then Pure Osaka is the place to be.

It’s a nightclub in the heart of downtown Osaka and is popular with Japanese celebrities, influencers, and anyone else who wants to be in the right place at the right time.

My favorite way to party in Osaka is karaoke! Hire a private room and sing the night away. It’s so much fun and incredibly affordable, too.

The price will be determined by the size of the room you hire and how long you stay, but we paid less than $15 for our family of four.

    Japan’s Kitchen

Osaka is referred to as the kitchen of Japan, and there’s no better place to be for foodies.

The streets along either side of the Dotonbori Canal, between the Dōtonboribashi Bridge and Nipponbashi Bridge are known simply as Dotonbori and this is the place to be if you want to eat in Osaka.

The famous running man billboard in Osaka, Japan (image credit: Tor Brierley)

This is also the spot where you can take a photo with Osaka’s infamous mascot, The Running Man.

People travel from all over Japan and the world to eat in this district (so of course I had to join them!)

I recommend trying the okonomiyaki, which is a savory pancake filled with cabbage and onions and smothered in a spicy mayonnaise-style sauce.

takoyaki ball dumplings in Osaka, Japan

Perhaps the most iconic thing to eat in Dotonbori is takoyaki. You’ll have probably seen these before: little rich, eggy dough balls filled with octopus served piping hot.

My husband loved these, but I definitely didn’t!

    Osaka With Kids

As much as I would love to share personal stories about wild nights in Osaka nightclubs,  I visited with two boys under the age of 10.

So my experience was a little bit different!

Hep FIVE ferris wheel, Osaka, Japan

But I will say that Osaka is a great place for family travel. It might not seem like an obvious family destination, like Tokyo, but we loved every minute.

We challenged each other to eat unusual foods in Dotonbori, wandered through the Team Labs botanical gardens, and rode the HEP FIVE Ferris Wheel for incredible views of the city. Each carriage has Bluetooth, so you can pump out your own tunes as you ride, too!

If you’re traveling with kids (or if you’re a theme park or adrenaline junkie) then Osaka is also home to Universal Studios Japan.

Super Nintendo World in Universal Studios Japan (USJ), Osaka. Image credit: Tor Brierley

This was the first Universal Studios to open a Super Nintendo World, and it’s also the largest.

This is a modern and interactive park where you can buy wristbands and use them to interact with the attractions in a way that will make you feel like you’re in a Mario video game (I tried it and regressed! I felt 15 again!)

You’ll also find Harry Potter World and the usual Universal offerings like Jurassic Park and Jaws here.

Osaka is also a great place to position yourself if you want to take day trips to other popular tourist destinations like Kyoto and Nara too. On the fastest train you can get to Kyoto from Osaka in around 20 minutes.

    Culture In Osaka

Osaka has an undeserved reputation for being devoid of culture. We definitely didn’t find that to be the case!

    Osaka Castle, Osaka, Japan

Osaka Castle was once the largest castle in Japan, and it’s not only beautiful but also huge! It really dominates the surrounding skyline, and the gardens are a beautiful place to walk.

We also visited Ohatsu Tenjin, which is in the heart of the city, hidden behind a neon-lit restaurant district. This is the shrine to love. It is also the only place in Japan where I saw pink Tori gates!

There are actually two shrines here. The first is dedicated to the tragic story of two star-crossed lovers who met a terrible end, and the other is a shrine to children.

A pink tori gate at Ohatsu Tenjin Shrine in Osaka (Image credit: Tor Brierley)

Volunteers wait at the entrance to the Shrine and will show you around and tell you the story of the star-crossed lovers (not those star-crossed lovers) in detail, and although it’s not an attraction in the guidebooks, it was a real highlight for us.

    Getting To Osaka

When I last visited Osaka, I traveled from Tokyo Station to Shin Osaka Station via the bullet train.

This is an incredibly easy journey that only took 2.5 hours door to door.

I chose to buy a JR Pass: This is a train ticket valid for a certain period of time that you can use on any JR train across Japan.

This worked out as the best value option for me because I was also visiting nearby Nara and Kyoto as part of my trip.

    Japanese-bullet-train-passing-over-flower-field-in-front-of-mount-fuji.

The JR Pass costs 50,000 YEN ($316.00) for 7 days or 80,000 YEN ($506.00) for 14 days.

Alternatively a return ticket from Tokyo Station to Shin Osaka Station is $290 (based on prices for a one week stay traveling in August 2024)

Osaka and Tokyo are incredibly well connected for a 2 center trip like this with a train leaving Tokyo station every 10 minutes.

If you don’t want to visit Tokyo, you can fly directly into Osaka instead. If you’re traveling from the U.S., you can fly nonstop into Kansai International Airport from San Francisco and Los Angeles.

United Airlines operates the route to San Francisco, while Japan Airlines operates the route to Los Angeles.

Why This Stunning U.S. Beach Destination Offers The Ultimate Vacation Vibe

Have you ever tried explaining how awesome a place is that you’ve visited to a friend or family and words seem to come up short?

There is something special that grabs your attention when you visit, but how do you describe the way it captured your interest while there?

A term I often use is vibe —and I’m not alone. According to a recent Expedia report,  Vibe Check-Ins are trending. People are picking their hotels and destinations more and more in search of the ultimate vibe, and there’s one beach destination and hotel that outshines the rest.

    Aerial-view-of-the-W-Hotel-in-Fort-Lauderdale

Fort Lauderdale — The Ultimate Vibe

Until recently, I’d considered Fort Lauderdale an offshoot of Miami. Why check out Fort Lauderdale when the bigger and better Miami is right next door, right?

    Wrong!

Fort Lauderdale is an absolute gem of a destination in its own right, and I can’t wait to go back and explore more of what it has to offer. While Miami may be bigger, I certainly wouldn’t call it better.

From shopping on Las Olas to spending an afternoon basking in the sun on the gorgeous beaches, there is one thing Fort Lauderdale is not lacking in — The Ultimate Vacation Vibe.

    Vibe-worthy Luxury Stays

A destination on its own doesn’t quite fulfill that vacation vibe so many of us crave, you’ve got to couple it with an incredible place to stay.

Don’t worry, Fort Lauderdale has the ultimate luxury stay that offers an unparalleled vibe  — W Fort Lauderdale.

If you’ve never stayed in a W Hotel, let me fill you in. Get ready for modern design, amazing luxury perks, top-notch locations, and unique experiences. W Hotels do not disappoint, and the W Fort Lauderdale is no exception.

From the second you walk in to the moment you hit the rooftop pool you’ll feel like a local celeb basking in the unique vibe that only the W Fort Lauderdale can offer.

    ♬ Like a Dream – Mauve

One of the coolest parts about the W Fort Lauderdale was a really unique perk that any guest can take advantage of while staying there — the Luxury Essentials Cart.

Just let the front desk know you’d like the cart brought to your room, and you’ll be able to borrow any item you like for the duration of your stay.

If that doesn’t scream good vibes I don’t know what does!

While most of the accessories were admittedly better-suited for women, I still had to see what was available 😂. They also plan to add more accessories for men in the future.

    Endless Things To Do

Fort Lauderdale is packed FULL of things to do, and that’s if you even feel the need to leave the W!

The W Fort Lauderdale has the perfect place to soak up the sun in style on its rooftop WET deck, complete with an amazing pool, cabanas, and staff walking around constantly to make sure your drink is always full.

Another cool thing about staying at the W Fort Lauderdale is the events they have at night. We were able to take part in cocktails with a live artist and music, and a really fun game night.

And don’t worry, if all you want to do is rest and relax, the AWAY spa is just an elevator ride away from your room. I’m still dreaming about the AMAZING massage I got while staying there.

Looking to get out of the hotel for a while? Fort Lauderdale won’t disappoint. Go for a bike ride along the beach, go rug-making, try a ton of different foods at Sistrunk Marketplace, or simply walk across the street to the gorgeous beach in front of the W.

If you’re looking for an amazing dinner spot, look no further than Rocco’s Tacos, and don’t leave without trying the freshly made guacamole! This was my favorite dinner of the trip and definitely a place I’ll be visiting again.

Endless things to do near the W Fort Lauderdale!

    Perfect Weather

You can’t talk about a beach destination with ultimate vacation vibes without bringing up how perfect the weather is.

December brings temperatures in the high 70s, perfect for a day out at the beach or an afternoon sunning out on the WET deck.

Rain is quick to pass, and nighttime temperatures are mild enough to walk around comfortably with evening wear.

Whatever vibe you’re going for, beach bum, old money, or fit and fab, Fort Lauderdale has the perfect weather to accommodate.

    Gorgeous Beaches

Fort Lauderdale offers WAY more than just beaches, but it is still the perfect place to lay in the sand and forget about the 9 to 5 waiting for you back home.

Whether you want to nap all day while working on your tan or get a little more active on a paddleboard, the beaches in Fort Lauderdale will not disappoint.

Plus, since the city is basically sitting right on the beach, you don’t have to go far to grab food, go shopping, or switch things up with a massage at the AWAY spa.

    It’s Worth It

If you’ve been wondering if Fort Lauderdale is worth spending a few days checking out on your next trip, add it to your list!

It’s a wonderful slice of Florida that I already can’t wait to visit again, and when I do, I 100% will be checking back into the hotel with the coolest vibe in town — The W Fort Lauderdale.
