7 Tips On How To Get The Most Out Of Visiting Tirana This Summer: From A Local!

Little by little, Albania has turned into one of Europe’s most beloved budget hubs, but as more people than ever flock to its once-overlooked capital, it’s not that easy to find those amazing-value deals everyone keeps talking about.

And since Mastercard just came out with a report naming Tirana, a place that I’ve been calling home for more than I can remember, the third-fastest growing travel destination in the world, I figured it was time to come here and give you some insider tips on how to truly get the most out of the city.

Having A Set Itinerary With Plenty Of Pit Stops Is Essential

First things first: Tirana is busy, bigger than you think, and this time of year, scorching hot, too.

Throughout July and August, highs that reach the 35°C – 38°C (95°F – 100°F) range are pretty common, so while I know how much fun it is to be spontaneous and see where the day takes you, now it’s not the time to do that.

You’ll want to have a set itinerary with plenty of stops to rest and recharge – of course, keep a list of backup places to see along with their approximate locations on your phone so that even if there’s a change of plans, you don’t have to roam around clueless under the scorching summer heat.

Here’s what a first-time visitor’s day in Tirana can look like:
- 9:00 – 9:30 – Coffee and breakfast at a Mon Cheri, Mulliri i Vjetër, or Sophie Cafe (these are popular chains with locations all over the city)
- 9:45 – 10:45 – Visit Skanderbeg Square (great place to buy some souvenirs, take in the local architecture, and people-watch).
- 10:50 – 12:00 – Visit Bunk’Art 2 (located less than 5 minutes away from the square).
- 12:05 – 12:30 – Quick snack run at a nearby supermarket or byrektore (where you can find freshly-made bureks for less than $0.8 a piece).
- 12:35 – 13:45 – Visit Tirana Castle and the surrounding pedestrian area
- 14:00 – 15:30 – Lunch at Restaurant Era Blloku (traditional dishes at a reasonable price)
- 15:50 – 18:30 – Go back to your hotel/Airbnb and rest (it should’ve gotten too hot to walk around by this time and most of the city is pretty quiet).
- 18:45 – 20:30 – A Dajti Express ride that takes you right to the top of Dajti Mountain just in time to watch the sunset.
- 9:00 – 10:30 – Dinner back in the city either at Pizzeria Deliziosa (Italian), Sakura (Japanese), or Serendiville (Mexican).
Afterward, you can either call it a day or go for a drink in the famous Blloku neighborhood (more on that below).

You Can Get By On Less Than $60 A Day If You Play Your Cards Right

I recently saw a video of a tourist spending two days in Tirana for under $150, and I couldn’t help but think that you can definitely get by on even less.

As long as you keep your meals quick and cheap (e.g., get a $2.5 breakfast sandwich at Mulliri i Vjetër for breakfast, a $0.7 burek for lunch, and a $6 combo meal at OPA for dinner), you’re set up for success.

That Dajti Express ticket I just mentioned is just ~$2.2, entry to Bunk’art costs ~$7, and there are plenty of hotels in amazing locations that charge a little over $40.

Speaking of which…

Finding A Decent, Cheap Place To Stay Is Easier Than You’d Think

Cheap places to stay in the city are easy to come across, but my top tip would be to opt for an Airbnb rather than a traditional hotel – I know that they’re a bit controversial among U.S. travelers, but here, they offer excellent value.

Take this one for example.

It’s right in the city center, has rave reviews, and costs less than $50 a day.

Avoid Using Public Transport As Much As You Can, Especially During Peak Hours

Public transport in Tirana can be challenging to navigate even as a local, especially during the hot summer months when surviving a ride in traffic in an outdated, incredibly crowded bus can be a nightmare.

So my top tip would be to spend a bit more on a more centrally-located Airbnb (search for places close to Scanderbeg Square, Myslym Shyri, Blloku, 21 Dhjetori, Vasil Shanto, Komuna e Parisit, Rruga e Elbasanit, or Liqeni) and book a Green Taxi whenever you need to go somewhere you can’t walk to.

Take Advantage Of The Incredible Food Scene

Not only are traditional Albanian dishes truly as good as they say, but Tirana happens to be such a mix of cultures and influences that you’re guaranteed to find some great food no matter what type of cuisine you prefer.

I’ve already talked about some of my favorites.

OPA’s gyros, Deliziosa’s pizzas, Era’s fërgesë, Sakura’s sushi, and Cioccolatitaliani’s tiramisù are all must-tries.

If Your Schedule Allows, Plan A Day Trip To One Of The Many Amazing Nearby Cities

While there’s a lot to love about Tirana, Albania is a surprisingly diverse country with plenty more to take in beyond its capital.

So, if you have a day to spare, why not spend it catching some rays in Durrës (if you do go here, make sure to try the paella at 4 Stinët), taking in the fairytale-like views of Berat, or revel in the historical sites of Krujë?

Enjoying A Night Out Like A Local: Exploring Blloku

There’s nothing locals in Tirana love more than a night out in “Blloku,” by far the city’s liveliest, trendiest neighborhood.

Here, you’ll find everything from upscale restaurants and high-end boutiques to Irish pubs where you can get a specialty beer and a snack of choice for less than $10.

If that combo piqued your interest, make sure to check out Duff or Meduza – neither the atmosphere nor the food will disappoint.

Mexico Will Launch A New Incredible Train Route Visiting Lesser-Known Gems In 2024

Last year, the Maya Train marked the triumphant return of the passenger railway in the Yucatan Peninsula after almost a century of defunding and lack of investment. It now connects all of the top tourist attractions around the Yucatán Peninsula, including Cancun, Tulum, and Chichén Itzá.

The success of the Maya Train is ongoing after initial hiccups getting started, with connectivity across the Mexican Caribbean having greatly improved and tourists now using the train to discover off-path parts of the country that were not as accessible before – but it doesn’t end there.

Soon enough, yet another train route visiting hidden gems in two additional states will be launched, including a historical colonial port on the Gulf of Mexico and a laid-back beach town currently trending among surfing enthusiasts:

Mexico’s Next Tourist Train Traveling From The Gulf To The Pacific Coast

As reported by The Cancun Sun, the so-called Isthmus Train is Mexico’s next major development project heading into 2024.

Though it was inaugurated last December, it did not make a splash as all eyes were on the Maya Train, which set out on its inaugural journey from Cancun around the same time.

Despite being ignored at first, the Isthmus Train is now being touted as Mexico’s next major breakthrough in tourism: the service is already up and running, connecting the city of Coatzacoalcos, in the state of Veracruz, to the quaint town of Salina Cruz, in neighboring Oaxaca.

Though the current railway map is not nearly as extensive as the much more popular Maya Train, calling at seven stations and linking the Gulf of Mexico to the Pacific Coast, authorities have promised ‘additional routes’ will be added this year.

By the time of its completion, it is expected that the train will cover over 700 miles. The most exciting thing is, if you’re traveling on the Maya Train from mid-2024, you will be able to connect to the Isthmus line in Palenque.

The UNESCO-protected archaeological zone is the last, southwesternmost station of the Maya Train, located at the far end of the line’s enlongated ‘tail’, and as announced by local media, it will host Isthmus trains as well.

This means it will soon be possible for passengers boarding the Maya Train in Cancun, or any major city on the line, to switch to the Coatzacoalcos-bound Isthmus Train when traveling all the way south to Palenque.

A Bustling Port On The Gulf Of Mexico

Coatzacoalcos is a strategic port on the Gulf of Mexico, best known for its booming ship industry and indigenous Olmec culture. The cityscape itself is characterized by a unique combination of colonial, modernist, and Mesoamerican revivalist architecture.

Two of the most emblematic symbols of Coatzacoalcos include Pirámide Malecón, an imposing modern pyramidal structure taking direct inspiration from the ruined cities that litter the Yucatán peninsula, and the whitewashed Cathedral of Saint Joseph.

The city also hosts a well-frequented shopping mall (Plaza Forum) with attractive prices and the Olmec Archaeology Museum, where artifacts from this lesser-known pre-Columbian civilization, which co-existed alongside the world-famous Mayans and Aztecs, can be admired.

A Quaint Pacific Town

On the other hand, Salina Cruz is a much smaller coastal hub best known for its unspoiled golden sand beaches, surfing culture, and year-round warm weather: winters are basically a non-existent concept here, where the lowest-ever temperatures average a pleasant 69.8°F.

Playa Cangrejo, a short half-hour drive from downtown Salina, is the perfect place for unwinding and basking in the sun without being disturbed by surging crowds, what with its quieter, family-friendly environment and varied selection of seafood spots.

Playa Azul is not to be missed either, as it is one of a handful in the region where the sands are virgin-white, and the seas are of an inviting azure color. An even shorter 20-minute drive from town, it is a popular half-day trip for tourists venturing down the Oaxaca coast.

Other non-beach, noteworthy points of interest are the Cortés Lighthouse, a state-protected monument built as early as the 16th century during the first Spanish incursions into Mexican territory, and the Piedra Cuchi viewpoint.

What We Know So Far About The Isthmus Train

Other confirmed stops on the Isthmus line, departing from Coatzacoalcos, include the towns of Minatitlán, Acayucan, Matías Romero, Unión Hidalgo, Ixtetepec, and Tehuantepec.

So far, we do not know whether the train tracks will be extended to the state capitals of Veracruz and Oaxaca, home to towering Spanish cathedrals and beautiful colonial centers.

As for tickets, prices for the Isthmus Train departing from Palenque have not been announced either, but the route already in operation, linking Coatzacoalcos to Salina Cruz, is quite affordable, starting from $27 for ‘tourist-class’ passengers, and roughly $35 for executive.

If you’re starting your journey in Cancun, you should expect to pay for one-way tickets to Palenque, where you’ll connect to the Isthmus Train, costing between $123 and $197, depending on the chosen fare.

After Visiting 50 Countries These Are My Top 7 Tips For Solo Female Travelers

When I first started traveling solo, I’m sure many people thought I was crazy.

But over 50 countries later, I don’t plan on stopping any time soon. I’ve traveled solo to almost every country in Latin America, and most of Europe too.

After years of traveling alone and having a safe and fun time everywhere I’ve gone, these are my top tips for other solo female travelers.

1. Start Off Small

If you’ve never taken a solo trip before, start off small.

My first true solo trip was a weekend in Copenhagen (ranked as one of the safest cities in the world for solo female travelers) while I was studying abroad in college.

An “easy” destination like this is a great way to test the waters of solo female travel.

Destinations like the UK, Ireland, and Scandinavia are perfect for first-time solo female travelers because they’re extremely safe, easy to travel in, and almost everyone speaks English.

2. Always Pack Light

Packing light is key! I’ve spent months at a time living out of a carry-on suitcase on my long-term travels. You can also get a backpack (ideally 50 liters or smaller) if that’s more your style.

Regardless, packing light makes things so much easier and less stressful as a solo traveler.

You don’t have to worry about lugging a giant suitcase through new and unfamiliar destinations on your own, and it also makes you less conspicuous and helps you blend in more.

3. Stay In Hostels

If you’re worried about getting lonely when traveling on your own, stay in hostels!

Hostels aren’t just for backpackers in their early twenties anymore either. You’ll find travelers of all ages staying at hostels, and there are many nice hostels that feel more like a boutique hotel.

If staying in a shared dorm room with other travelers isn’t for you, you can pay a bit more and stay in a private room (this is what I do!) You can still enjoy the social benefits of the hostel, and it’s a great way to make friends while traveling alone, especially with other solo travelers.

4. Join Group Activities

Another one of my favorite ways to make friends while traveling solo is by joining group activities.

Walking tours, cooking classes, group hikes, day tours, fitness classes, and bar crawls are just some examples of group activities you can join while traveling where you have a high chance of meeting other people.

If you’re nervous about traveling solo to a particular destination, you can even join an extended group tour instead of traveling completely on your own. This is a guaranteed way to meet other travelers, and you don’t have to worry about logistics yourself.

5. Do Your Own Research

Now let’s get into some safety tips for solo female travelers.

When planning a solo trip, you might hear from concerned, well-meaning family and friends that what you’re doing isn’t safe. In these cases, it’s important to do your own research and consider the source.

Do your family and friends have first-hand experience traveling solo in the destination you’re going to? Probably not. But can you find examples of women who actually have traveled solo there? Definitely!

The Internet offers a wealth of information for aspiring solo travelers. I’ve used solo female travel blogs to help me research and plan trips for years.

I also do extensive online research and planning before a trip, because the more prepared I am, the safer I feel arriving in a new and unfamiliar destination.

6. Trust Your Instincts

I’ll skip the most obvious safety advice like watching what you drink and avoiding walking alone at night.

But one of the biggest safety tips I can give you is to trust your instincts.

They’re rarely wrong. If something feels off about a place, situation, or person, remove yourself immediately, and don’t worry about being rude (see tip #7 below.)

I’ve been lucky enough not to have any major mishaps while traveling solo, but I have been in a few weird or sketchy situations. And when those alarm bells started going off, I listened and got out of there!

7. Unleash Your Inner New Yorker

As a New Yorker, I’m used to all the stereotypes about us. We’re rude, we’re always in a hurry, we’re blunt, and so on.

But you know what? There’s a little bit of truth to all of that, and letting your inner New Yorker out can actually help you as a solo female traveler.

If someone is hassling you, aggressively trying to sell you something, or otherwise making you feel uncomfortable, don’t be afraid to simply ignore them and keep walking.

Always walk with a purpose and stay alert. Looking lost or confused makes you a target for pickpockets and scammers. If you are lost, wait until you can duck in somewhere more private (like a store or a hotel lobby) to regroup and get your bearings.

A little bit of street smarts goes a long way in keeping you safe when traveling solo!

4 Things Travelers Should Know Before Visiting This Iconic European City In 2024

Planning a trip to Venice, Italy in 2024? These are the most important things travelers need to know before visiting Venice this year!

Venice is one of the most iconic cities in Europe. It’s a bucket list destination for many travelers who dream of seeing the city’s many canals and bridges — of which there are 150 and 435, respectively.

In addition to being one of the most beautiful and romantic cities in Europe, Venice is unfortunately also one of the most overcrowded. The city has been suffering from overtourism for years, and several measures are finally going into place in 2024 to combat this.

Here are the most important things travelers should know before visiting Venice this year:

Venice Is Finally Implementing A Day Tripper Fee

Although it was announced several years ago, Venice’s so-called “day tripper tax” has never actually been implemented — until now, that is.

Beginning in April, the city of Venice will implement a €5 fee ($5.45) on 29 select dates from April through July. This fee will be charged to visitors who are only in the city for a day, such as cruise tourists and day trippers. It will apply on most weekends and other peak travel dates.

Visitors will have to pre-book a ticket online and show a QR code at certain entry points around the city. The goal of this effort is to limit overcrowding, although it’s still on a trial basis.

Tour Groups Of Over 25 People Have Been Banned

Another recent update tourists should be aware of is the ban on tour groups of over 25 people in Venice. This new rule will go into effect in June.

It’s designed to alleviate large crowds, which may cause blockages and human “traffic jams” on the pedestrian-only streets of Venice.

Additionally, the use of loudspeakers will be banned in Venice. Many tour guides use loudspeakers while walking through the streets of Venice, but it causes a major noise disturbance.

These are just some of the latest changes, much like banning large cruise ships from entering the center of Venice, that are designed to protect the city from the effects of overtourism.

Off Season Is The Best Time To Travel

Based on all the drawbacks of traveling to Venice, such as massive crowds and sky-high prices, you might think you’re better off not visiting Venice at all in 2024.

However, my recommendation is actually to travel during the off-season.

Three of my four trips to Venice have been during the off season, including my latest visit in November 2023. And this is by far the best time to experience Venice as it should be experienced! From October through March, you can enjoy low crowds and lower prices in Venice.

Although it can be a bit chilly at this time of year, it’s much better than visiting Venice during the summertime when sweltering heat combined with crowds makes walking around nearly unbearable.

The only thing to watch out for when visiting Venice during the off season is the acqua alta — high tide that occasionally occurs during the winter and causes the lowest points of the city to become flooded.

During the acqua alta, the city installs temporary raised walkways over flooded areas, and you can purchase knee-high plastic shoe coverings to stay dry.

But Be Careful Of Visiting Venice In February

The only exception to the low crowds and low prices of Venice in the off season? Carnivale during February! Although experiencing Carnivale is a bucket list experience for many travelers, it’s not for the faint of heart. The city becomes absolutely packed and prices for hotels are exorbitant.

This year, the festival will take place from February 3 to February 13, although there will be some pre-Carnivale festivities happening the week before too.

If you want to save money and avoid crowds, this is NOT the time to visit Venice. But if you want to experience a festival unlike any other in the world, visit Venice during Carnivale!

Why I Love Visiting These 3 Popular European Cities In The Winter

There’s a lot to be said for traveling to Europe during the summer.

Long days, lots of sunshine, and a vibrant atmosphere make summer the most popular time of year to travel to Europe’s hotspots.

But there are three extremely popular destinations that I’ve visited in both summer and winter — and I found winter to be the best time to visit by far.

Those three cities are:
- Venice, Italy
- Dubrovnik, Croatia
- Barcelona, Spain
These destinations have several things in common: the peak season for visiting is in the summer, they’re all incredibly popular destinations that draw millions of visitors each year, they’re all notoriously expensive, they’re all popular with cruise ships, and they’re all suffering from overtourism.

Here’s why winter is actually the best time to travel to these trending European destinations.

Venice, Italy

Venice is one of my favorite cities in all of Europe. It’s truly magical and enchanting, with its breathtaking architecture and hundreds of bridges and canals.

During the summer months, though, visiting Venice can feel like visiting an overcrowded theme park rather than a historic city. The crowds have gotten so bad that Venice will soon implement a visitor fee of 5 euros to enter the city on peak days.

But Venice in the winter is a completely different story. The crowds are nearly nonexistent, and although the weather can be chilly and overcast, it adds to the moody, mysterious atmosphere of the city.

Winter is also the best time to visit for lower prices, with average hotel prices dropping more than 50% compared to the summer months.

Dubrovnik, Croatia

Dubrovnik is a stunning historic city on the Adriatic Sea, famous for its walled Old Town. This is a destination that has been exploding in popularity in recent years, with the summer of 2023 ushering in a new tourism record for Dubrovnik.

Like Venice, this is a city that has been suffering immensely from extreme crowds and overtourism. Dubrovnik has also seen skyrocketing prices in the past few years, especially after officially joining the Schengen Zone and adopting the euro as currency at the beginning of 2023.

Winter is my favorite time to visit Dubrovnik because there are very few tourists, and you can enjoy activities like walking the City Walls without shoulder-to-shoulder crowds.

It may be too cold to visit the beach or go swimming in the Adriatic Sea, but it’s still sunny and mild, with average temperatures in the high fifties during the winter.

Barcelona, Spain

Finally, Barcelona is another European hotspot I prefer visiting in the winter compared to the summer.

While there are certainly pros to visiting Barcelona in the summer — you can go to the beach, there are lots of concerts and festivals going on — there are also plenty of cons. Summer in Barcelona can be unbearably hot, and everything is extremely crowded.

This is because Barcelona is a major cruise port, so cruise tourists flood the city in the summer months (much like Venice and Dubrovnik.) It’s also peak season for tourism in general.

But Barcelona is very much a year-round city, so there’s no shortage of things to do during the winter. You can enjoy all that the city has to offer with far fewer crowds and lower prices. Plus Barcelona has a Mediterranean climate, so even during the winter, temperatures are often in the low sixties.

Surprisingly, Barcelona is also a great holiday destination. I love the city during the Christmas season, especially on Three Kings Day on January 6th, when there’s a huge parade.

European Hotspots Best Visited In Winter

Overall, Venice, Dubrovnik, and Barcelona are three European cities I definitely prefer visiting during the winter compared to the summer.

In the winter, you don’t have to deal with huge crowds, expensive prices, or extremely hot weather. You can enjoy these destinations without the hordes of cruise ship tourists and take advantage of lower off-season prices.

The land of fire and ice has become popular for every type of traveler worldwide.

Wanderers looking to find solace amongst nature and photographers seeking out the most epic of landscapes find what they are looking for in Iceland.

It was reported by the Icelandic Tourist Board that in 2022, the country welcomed 1.7 million visitors!

A small Nordic Island country out to sea, there’s something magical about the country that draws tourists each year. Known for its dramatic landscapes of lava fields and glaciers, friendly locals, and change of seasons, there’s really no bad time to visit.

During the summer months, travelers can expect to experience the midnight sun. 24-hour daylight, and parties until the wee hours of the morning, but there’s another season making headlines.

Throughout the centuries, the archipelago would fall under the control of several different empires, being administered by the English, Dutch, French, the Danish, and even the Spanish, who fought their Anglo-Saxon rivals in an attempt to assert their Empire’s borders in the New World.

Ultimately, the territory would return to British control when it became an important trading hub associated with the sugar cane trade.

During this period, a large number of enslaved Africans would be forcibly brought to the BVI to work in the fields.

Today, the archipelago’s multi-ethnic populace is reflective of centuries upon centuries of racial diversity and intermarriage, though Afro-Caribbean descendants continue to form a majority. Nonetheless, all islands are British citizens.

- H.M. Prison Museum, the oldest building on the island, was established as early as 1794
- The Old Government House, the official residence of the archipelago’s Governor, originally built in 1899
- The 1780 Lower Estate Sugar Works, a plantation formerly linked to slavery
- The Folk Museum, chronicling the History of the islands’ native inhabitants, the Arawak and Carib peoples
Direct Flights

Finally, if you’re thinking the BVI are not worth the hassle as they are more remote than other resorts a stone’s throw away from home, you might want to reconsider upon learning that the first-ever nonstop flight between the mainland U.S. and the territory has launched recently.

Offered by American Airlines, the inaugural three-hour journey took place on June 1, linking Miami to the BVI’s main international airport on Beef Island.

Although it is not the capital or most populous island, it is connected to Tortola via the landmark Queen Elizabeth Bridge, spanning the bright-blue sea.

The daily flight will remain operational through August 14, pausing in the fall before restarting service in November.

Overall, the BVI administration estimated that more than 2,100 monthly visitors would be transported to the archipelago during active months.

The flights depart Miami at 10:07 a.m. arriving at Beef Island at 1:06 p.m. Returning to America, guests will take off at 1:47 p.m., touching down in Miami at 4:25 p.m.

Additional flights have also been added on certain June dates due to strong demand.

As stated by BVI Premier Natalio Wheatley, ‘this is the first time in history that a flight has completely sold out in such a short amount of time‘, and the administration is grateful to American Airlines for partnering with them in fulfilling this long-awaited service. ‘bringing ease and accessibility’ to the ‘treasured’ destination.

Round-trip flights from Miami start from US $998 and US $503 from San Juan in Puerto Rico.

Low-cost options are non-existent, as both seat availability and capacity are lower, but this is a more exclusive destination where you’ll be able to truly enjoy the natural wonders of the Caribbean without battling for a spot in the sun amid the raging crowds.

For some, that might be worth the extra hundred bucks.
